I loved this prompt because it gave me a chance to explore that idea -- not just gently getting on Sam for that, but also exploring a possible reason why Dean indulges the way he does with food. 🥲 You also make a really good point that Sam and Dean had similar, but also very different childhoods, and that could be a big factor in why Sam's more of a health nut after having to eat so much processed junk as a child, while Dean eats whatever he can whenever he can.

AN: This was requested by my lovely friend @iprobablyshipit91: Sam making the usual digs at Dean about his diet, and how much he eats, and the reader pulling him aside and telling him to back off as he doesn’t realize how much Dean went hungry as a kid to make sure Sam was fed.

“Aw, hell yeah,” Dean mutters. He rubs his hands together and surveys the immovable feast that’s about to get shoveled into his mouth.

This Christmas marks roughly your first year living with the brothers Winchester in the bunker, and a few months after your first anniversary with Dean.

He’s made it very clear that he enjoys your cooking, especially of Cuban food. So you’ve gone all out for Christmas: white rice and your grandmother’s recipe for black beans, boiled yuca with plenty of garlic, bread drizzled with more garlic and olive oil, and Dean’s favorite…

“What’s this part of the pig called again?” he asks. And he uses a large fork to spear into the mountain of roasted meat that you’ve already cut and piled onto a platter.

You come in from the kitchen with the bread in hand, placing it on the dinner table. You sidle up behind him, where he's seated.

“The shoulder,” you say, squeezing both of Dean’s. He hums in interest as you press a kiss to the side of his head. “It’s called pernil. Marinated with garlic, mojo, bunch of good stuff.”

He predictably steals a juicy piece of meat, plopping it into his mouth. He grins while he chews and makes a happy sound.

“Ohoho, yeah.”

You share an amused look with Sam, who sits beside his brother. By the time you’ve found your seat on Dean’s other side, he’s already serving you and Sam the same hefty portions he serves himself.

You know for a fact you’re only going to eat about half of your plate. Sam manages to polish his off. Dean does as well…and serves himself twice more before you break out the dessert.

“Please tell me that’s a flan,” Dean says, drumming his fingers on the table.

“How the hell are you still hungry?” Sam asks.

The look on his face says he’s half entertained, half disgusted. Dean is still sucking on the crispy skin on a piece of pork. He licks the juices off his fingers.

“Have I taught you nothing?” he says. “There’s always room for dessert.”

He tosses you a wink, followed closely by a suggestive smirk. You glance at him with a smile as you set down the metal pan.

“It is a flan,” you affirm. “I tried my hand at coconut this time.”

“Ooh, tropical,” Dean says, waggling greasy fingers. He wipes them on a napkin before he reaches for the pie cutter, which is usually reserved for his favorite dessert. Although, flan is rapidly becoming his second go-to. The rich custardy goodness is calling to him like a siren song.

“How can I get you to make this more often?” Dean mutters while carving out a generous slice.

Your lips curve. You rest your chin on your hand and lean towards him, earning his gaze. “If I made it all the time, you wouldn’t savor it, now would you?”

Dean smirks. His gaze lowers to your lips, like he’s contemplating some persuasive maneuvers.

“You’d also be 300 pounds,” Sam remarks, taking a sip of his beer.

You eye Sam with a frown. But Dean just laughs it off and cuts his little brother a slice.

By the end of the meal, all three of you are stuffed. Dean groans and leans back in his seat. A gurgle mounts audibly from his stomach.

“Jesus. Are you erupting?” Sam says.

Dean holds up a finger. “Wait for it.”

You give your boyfriend a bemused look. You know exactly what’s about to happen. As does Sam, who’s grimacing.

A few seconds later, Dean does erupt, with a truly legendary belch.

“Nice,” you say wryly. Dean squeezes your soft, thick thigh and backs his chair away from the table.

“Well, since I roasted the pig and you did the rest, I’d say it’s Sammy’s turn on cleaning duty,” he says.

“Thanks,” Sam says, with a wan smile. Yours is more jovial, even as Dean’s hand toys with a curl of your hair after he stands.

“I’m gonna shower off the meat sweats,” he says.

You giggle, but you nod. “You do that. I’ll help Sam a bit, put away the food at least.”

Your smile becomes more genuine when Dean drops a kiss on your forehead from above.

“Thanks, sweetheart,” he says. His voice is a quiet, deep rumble washing over you. You know what he’s thanking you for: good food, and a small, but warm Christmas.

You reach up and give his cheek a tender touch, before he withdraws and makes his way to the bedroom he shares with you. It leaves you and Sam to collect what’s on the table and bring it all into the kitchen. While Sam does the dishes, you start to put away the leftovers.

Something has been nagging at you all night, though you’ve tried to stamp it down time and time again. You don’t know if it's your place to say something. Especially if Dean doesn’t seem bothered…but it bothers you. And you’ve never been one to hold your tongue.

“Hey, can I ask you something?” you begin, even as a small bit of trepidation niggles inside you.

Sam looks over at you. He’s quick to catch the serious note in your demeanor.

“Yeah, what’s up?” he replies. You okay? his eyes also ask.

“Why do you get on Dean so much for enjoying his food?” you ask.

Sam blinks. Then he scoffs a little. “There’s enjoying, and then there’s gluttony.”

“He’s not that bad,” you argue.

“He ate half his weight in pig,” Sam says. You can’t exactly deny that, but you cross your arms and turn to him, leaning your hip against the counter.

“So? It’s Christmas. Let him be happy,” you retort.

Sam levels you with pinched brows. “He’s not in his 20s anymore. All that crap he eats is going to catch up to him someday.”

“What, you expect him to down some kale smoothies?” you reply, giving a pointed brow raise and a teasing smile. “Get up at the crack of dawn for a bare-chested run?”

Sam shoots you a dry look.  

“My point is, I’m not gonna survive hundreds of monster attacks just to get taken down by cholesterol,” he says.

You sigh a raise a placating hand. “All right. I get what you’re saying. I’m just saying…have you ever thought about why he loves food so much? Why he overindulges sometimes?”

Sam's brow quirks. It’s a question you know you need to tread lightly in order to answer. You uncross your arms to lay a hand on Sam’s wrist. He stops washing dishes and turns off the sink to give you his full attention, sensing your shift.

You look up at him, and you steel yourself.

“He might’ve mentioned once…that you two sometimes had a hard time growing up. With John taking you guys from motel to motel while he was working a job, and every now and then, leaving you guys alone longer than he meant to.”

Dean had been more than a bit drunk when you’d gotten this out of him. Hearing about that aspect of his upbringing had upset you, not just as someone who cared about him, but the caretaker in you smarted.

“Even though you guys didn’t have enough money at times, your brother always made sure you were fed,” you explain. You meet Sam’s gaze, squeezing his arm. “Sometimes he went without.”

Sam’s expression slowly slackens, contemplative and dismayed at what you’re implying. He dries his hands on a kitchen towel and rubs at his mouth, like he’s reeling back the years of evidence in his mind and trying to confirm if you were right.

“You don’t remember?” you gently ask.

Sam shakes his head. “I mean, I knew things were tight. I remember him taking care of me, obviously. But…”

He doesn’t remember his brother going hungry.

It carves a hole of remorse in his chest.

This isn’t the first time he’s had to reexamine Dean’s role in his life, and not the first time he’s felt this flavor of guilt. But he sighs and really doesn’t know what to say.

You seem to realize that, and you squeeze his arm one last time.

“Just keep that in mind,” you implore.

You soon leave him to venture upstairs, but there in the kitchen, Sam makes a resolution before the new year. One that includes having a conversation with his brother.

You find Dean in your bedroom. Now in his most threadbare sweatpants and an old black shirt, he lays over the covers on the bed. His eyes are closed and his arms are folded behind his head, but he hears you when you come in.

You slide into bed next to him and lay your head on his chest. He groans deep and slowly lowers his arms. One of them wraps around your frame.

“Think I overdid it a bit,” he admits, cracking his eyes open. You smile and gently pat his stomach. 

“Wanna go for a walk tomorrow?” you ask. “We can go down to the park.”

Dean raises a brow at you. “You hate walking.”

“Not true,” you shake your head, before you rest more comfortably against him. He tucks you in beside him and begins to run his fingers down your arm. It’s a bit distracting.

“Could be nice, with the right view,” you add, though you shiver a little at his touch.

Dean makes a sound of mild interest in the idea. “I guess, if you like stringy trees and frozen lakes.”

It’s winter in Lebanon. Not much to look at.

You smirk and press a kiss to his chest. “I mean, that, and you in some little Richard Simmons shorts.”

Dean gives you a look, and you giggle so hard it shakes your whole body against him.

“Honestly, I think that’ll really do it for me,” you tease. You walk two fingers across his thigh, where a cute pair of ‘80s-style exercise shorts would cut off.

Dean grabs your hand and rolls you over, pinning you underneath him on the bed. His thigh slips between both of yours, causing friction against your jeans. And he smirks down at you.

“Sweetheart, I don’t do shorts.”

Hi I’m back back, back again! With more questions!

The fandom calls Paul and Richard guitars husbands right? But to help a relationship status to married you have to gradually progress through the stages of like: pining, mutual pining, dating, boyfriends and then finally married.

I was wondering what pictures or gifs/videos represent those stages for our dearest guitarists?

I have to admit, though, I found this ask a bit tricky to answer at first. I kept going back and forth, trying to establish a clear timeline for Paul and Richard’s, let’s call it loosely, “relationship.” In some ways, that’s possible. At the start of the band’s history, we have a popular example of looks exchanged that could definitely be interpreted as “pining” or “longing”:

Later on, there were repeated moments on stage where they looked for closeness or looked out for each other:

Nowadays, there are wonderful moments on stage filled with cheekiness, emotions, joy, and surely also some kind of love between two people who’ve worked together for 30 years, experienced so many life situations together, endured a lot in the band's life and in general..:

And yet... the story between Paul and Richard always seems incredibly dynamic to me. They started out as young musicians who discovered a lot of common ground in their musical visions (I think I recall Richard saying something along the lines of “he completes me”). At the same time, they were also musical rivals in some ways, given they played the same instrument. Two people with strong opinions and firm points of views in things, who sometimes wouldn’t accept any other viewpoint but their own. They are so similar, yet have their struggles, especially to see that they're so similar it seems.

But they always manage to come back together, no matter how difficult working together might be - even going as far as seeking help for their communication (Olsen Involtini apparently played a big role in ensuring that harmony was quickly restored, as mentioned here). They maybe do it simply because they see the bigger picture. They see that enduring personal differences is worth it for the good of the band. They share the same drive to make things happen and, over the years, have learned to listen to one another and give each other space to express themselves.

If we indulge in the “Paulchard” fantasy, we can find moments of connection (body contact or just looking out for each other) at various points in the band’s history. It’s difficult for me to identify a clear chronology here - whether it’s the 90s, the challenging Mutter era, or the MiG tour...:

Of course, their warmth towards each other has exponentially increased in recent years! Longing, hugs, kisses, comforting each other, or just being there for one another.... And sometimes really taking their time with each other during these interactions, like in Frankfurt for the plane watching 🥹.

It feels like they can express these things more freely now, in their more mature years, after all their shared experiences - or at least it appears that way. And for that, I’m very happy.

So, yes. Paulchard interactions are varied, dynamic, and ever-changing, just as most likely a relationship between people is. 🤍

North you're the Starlo mutual so I'm curious. What are your thoughts on this guy

I think this concept design on it's own is adorable! Cute shapes, a warthog is a very fun pick for a sheriff/cowboy character. His proportions implies he's short and stout which is great. I could definitely see this concept being reused into another character for a different project!

But I will say I also totally understand why the second they laid eyes on the other Starlo concept art they decided for it unambiguously. This guy is cute, but the sheriff character being a literal star-monster with a star shaped head named Starlo is very quirky and unique in a way that fits Undertale's vibe and character design beautifully. I find it so amusing that after those initial Starlo concept arts his design changes very little aside from small details and colors. They knew they struck gold with him. Starlo's head shape is a big appeal of his design, because of how unique and striking it is which makes his silhouette stand out noticably. This guy's braids are adorable, but his silhouette doesn't stand out as much. Plus, with Martlet being a bird monster and Ceroba being a fox monster, I think variety in the inspirations for the main cast is appreciated! Fun to have Starlo not really based on an animal persay. I definitely think that reason is part of why he's so popular, he's very unique and creative but still aligns with Undertale design principles! Something new but still feels familiar in all the right ways.

Also endlessly funny to me that this guy is balding and the end result for this character is Starlo who is just straight up bald. Doomed to be hairless.

Overall, very happy they went with the Starlo design they did! This guy is so cute though, and I vote people reuse him for a background NPC in the Wild East.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

He’s very affectionate! He would show affection in a variety of ways, one of the big ones being physical touch. Not necessarily just sexual touching, but innocent ones too, like holding hands, brushing hair out of your eyes, touching your arm or shoulder as he walks past you, or his hand lingering on your back in a crowded room. Any excuse to put his hands on you in any capacity, he’s doing it.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend?)

Scud would be an amazing best friend. He’s super chill and laid back, so he’d be the perfect bestie to wind down with after a long day at work or a rough week. Light up a joint, order takeout, and play some video games or watch cartoons. He’s also a great listener, so if you needed a void to scream into or a shoulder to cry on, he’s there. If you needed advice, he’d offer it. Otherwise, he’d just sit there and listen.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

OH YES. This angel is a cuddle fiend. Any chance he gets, he’s clinging to you. He would prefer to be the big spoon, wrapping his arms and legs around you and nuzzling his head into your neck, burying it in your hair. If he accidentally tickled you while pulling you close to him and it elicited a reaction from you, he may go in on tickling you until you laughed so hard you cried. Sometimes, he prefers to be the little spoon or cuddle on top of you with his head in your chest. He’s at his happiest when he’s tangled up with you under the covers in bed or a blanket on the couch, basking in each other’s presence, regardless of what cuddling position you two had chosen. As long as he’s cuddling you though, he’s happy.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

When he finds the one, he would definitely want to settle down. He’d be so excited to put a ring on it that he’d hardly be able to contain himself. He’s a fairly good cook, though he doesn’t like doing it unless he absolutely has to. Once you two get together, though, he’d want to get better at it so he could cook for you more. Cleaning is a different story. He’s messy, but it’s an organized mess. It looks like chaos to you, but he knows where everything is in the chaos. He would try to be better about it for you, though, especially when you start living together.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

Oh god, this one is painful to think about (and it would be painful for him to think about too). If he needed to end a relationship for any reason, it would crush him. He falls head over heels for whoever he ends up in a relationship with and would end one if it was absolutely necessary (like in the case of infidelity or his partner becoming toxic). Even if he had to, it would still hurt. I can see him getting high even more frequently to cope (this one is painful).

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Our favorite little stoner is big on commitment. When you two decide to become exclusive, he would be over the moon that you chose him to be with (which of course you did because look at him). He knows you’re incredible & wants to show you off to the world, but he doesn’t want to share you, if that makes sense. He would know very early on that you were the one, though he wouldn’t express that right away out of fear of potentially scaring you off (for thinking he’d be moving too fast), and when you got engaged, it would be one of the happiest days of his life.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

He’s extremely gentle. Baby boy is a lover, and particularly with his partner, he’s gentle and tender in every capacity. He doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body, and that’s just how you like him. He loves being soft and tender with you, and it makes him feel good to know how much you also love it. You deserve a soft, easy life, and he’s gonna do his best to help make that a reality. Some might say that means he’s “whipped,” but he doesn’t care. As long as you’re happy, he’ll happily be called “whipped” any day.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

Hell yeah, he’s a hugger. He’s very physically affectionate, and that includes hugs. He’d give you hugs every chance he got, everything from the second you walked in the door after getting home or hugging you from behind while you’re cooking or brushing your teeth. He’s not just a hugger with his partner, but with his friends (and yours) as well. He’s not at all put off by being platonically physically affectionate with his male friends (he thinks the whole notion of men not hugging each other is silly). His hugs are warm, tight, and comforting, and being wrapped in his arms is one of the safest places you could be.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

When he’s into someone, he falls very hard, very fast. Not necessarily falling in love, but falling in…infatuation? He hasn’t actually been in love that many times, only once prior to meeting you (a high school relationship), so he gets nervous about possibly saying it too quickly. He’d say it once you’ve been together for a few months and is sure it wouldn’t scare you off, but he’d still be nervous. He’d be bursting at the seams to say it by the time it finally came out of his mouth.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He’s not the jealous type. He’s confident in himself & very secure in your relationship. He’d only ever get jealous for a very good reason and isn’t the type to fly off the handle at little things. If, for any reason, he did get a bit jealous, he would tell you and want to have a conversation about it. You don’t do anything that would make him jealous, though. He’s all you’ve got eyes for, and he knows that.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

This angel’s kisses are much like him—soft, gentle, and a little goofy. Sometimes, his kisses would turn into playful biting (gentle biting of course bc he’s a gentle bean). He loves to kiss you everywhere, but particularly your lips, neck (the crook of your neck because it’s nice and warm), and any part of your body that you’re insecure about. Regardless of whether it’s your chest, arms, stomach, anything, he’ll show it extra affection. Aside from on the mouth, he likes to be kissed on the forehead and on his scars.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

He loves kids! He’s a kid at heart, so he gets along amazingly with them and relates to them a lot. If you two had a child/children, he’d be a top-tier dad. He’d wanna spend all of his time with his little one(s) (and you, of course) and do everything he possibly could for them. You’d insist on taking over at times, wanting to give him a break, but he’d be so over the moon to be with his kid(s) that you’d have to force him to take a break for his own sake.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

When you’re both home, mornings are slow and cozy. He’d keep you in bed for as long as possible, wrapped up around you or with you laying with your head on his chest (as we have established, he’s a cuddle fiend). When you two finally climb out of bed, he’d insist on making breakfast, whether that was something quick because you stayed in bed for too long or something that required more effort because he wanted to treat you. Sometimes, you would push to do it, as you’d want to take care of him too.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Nights with him as just as cozy as the mornings, if not more so. You two would often shower together, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a sexual thing. It would often be for the other intimate moments that come with showering together, like washing each other’s hair. When you were back in bed and cuddled up under the covers, you’d talk about your days, and sometimes he would light up a joint. You would fall asleep wrapped up in each other’s arms.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

Scud’s very open and has no trouble expressing himself to anyone, even strangers. He has no shame & is an open book when it comes to just about anything. He couldn’t give less of a fuck about what anyone thinks of him. He’d start revealing things about himself pretty early on and would continue to do so based on how you reacted to his other statements. If he waits to reveal anything, it would be about how he got his scars & the fact that he’s a familiar. He’s not insecure about his scars by any means, but it’s one of his most personal stories, and even if you see them sooner, he’d probably save the story of how he got them for once you’ve been together for a little bit. He’d eventually open up about being a familiar once you’d been together for a while & you knew about Blade & his work.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Our angel baby is very patient on all fronts, and he’s not very easily angered. He gets frustrated, but not angry, if that makes sense. There aren’t many things that would make him angry, but an example would be someone threatening harm to one of you. He may get a little snippy after having a really bad day at the workshop, but he would quickly catch himself and apologize if he ever caught an attitude with you.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

He tries to remember nearly everything you tell him. It’s important to him to remember as much as he can about you, so he does his best. He even tries to remember tiny details that you might consider insignificant, like which socks you prefer to wear when it’s extra cold outside or the exact brand of pads or tampons you buy (even though you couldn’t care less and just buy whatever is the most affordable).

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

The first time the two of you say “I love you.” Whether it was during a planned romantic date, in the heat of the moment during an intimate escapade, or on a random Tuesday when you’re doing something mundane, it would be his favorite memory. He’d often think back to it when you’re sharing a romantic moment or even just lounging on the couch together with your head in his lap as he pets your hair & his eyes would get all glossed over with love.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

He’s very protective of the people he cares about, and that of course includes you. However, he’s not controlling, like he doesn’t tell you what you can and can’t wear/do/hang out with, nor would he ever try because you’re your own person & he loves you the way you are. He puts a lot of effort into the smallest of things because, to him, it’s the little details that make the special moments even more special. If you had an obscure favorite flower (or other plant) or a niche hobby or treat you enjoyed, he’d go through hell and high water to get his hands on it because he knows how much it would make you smile, and he’d do anything to see that smile. He’d be counting down the days to your anniversary each year, barely able to contain himself with what he has planned for you two.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Angel’s a nail-biter, for sure. Sometimes it’s an anxious habit, sometimes it’s done out of boredom. You’ll often catch him biting them absentmindedly, and when you do, you take his hand and kiss the back of his fingers. That pulls him from whatever anxious or bored trance he was stuck in, and he’d smile softly and kiss your hand in return as a silent thank you.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He’s confident, but he’s not vain. He’s only concerned with his looks as it pertains to what you think (he couldn’t give less of a fuck what anyone else thinks). If you say you like his hair a certain way or when he wears a certain shirt or accessory (cough the bandana cough), he’ll make an effort to wear it more often, especially when he knows he’s going to see you. He’d also do things like paint his nails because he thinks it looks cool, gender norms be damned. He doesn’t care.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Once he had you, he wouldn’t feel complete without you. You’re his other half, his better half, as he would say. He wants to do life and all of its ups and downs with you, and he can’t imagine doing it without you, nor does he want to. He wants to be by your side through every accomplishment & proud moment as well as every bout of depression & grief, and he wants you by his side for the same.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

I have two for this one. First, he never takes his choker off, even to shower or sleep. He wears it all the time, and if/when it breaks, he’ll do his best to fix it or find a new one if it’s beyond repair. Second, he has ADHD. He’s very fidgety, always tapping his foot, bouncing his leg, or playing with his hands/fingers any time he’s not doing something. He can ramble, and he hyperfixates on different things, one of the big ones being his inventions.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He doesn’t like fake people. He’s genuine & authentic to his core, and he expects you to be the same. He needs someone who isn’t afraid to be who they truly are, regardless of what that looks like. He also can’t stand liars. He’s honest, always, and that’s a quality his partner needs to have as well. He also hates people who are just mean for no reason. Being human is hard, so he puts forth his best effort to be kind to everyone he encounters.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

When lover boy’s in a relationship, he has trouble sleeping alone. He wants to be wrapped around his partner like a koala, nuzzling his face into your hair and holding you so close and tight that you don’t have room to roll around. Not that you would want to roll away from him, anyway. He also snores, but it’s really soft and cute, sometimes blowing strands of your hair against your neck while you sleep. It tickles every so slightly, but it doesn’t bother you.

oooh dakota and vyncent…, where do i start. i warn you i don't normally do like. character analysis writing type posts? so please excuse if it's bad.

they have perhaps the most strained relationship out of the prime defenders. but that's not necessarily a bad thing. it's really compelling. they're very similar but also very different at the same time. and maybe this is why they can sort of grate against each other sometimes, but is also why they are such good friends who can rely on each other.

vyncent grew up living a life that, while not necessarily comfortable, he was familiar with. he was happy and he had a support system in the greats and his parents. that got ripped away from him very suddenly and he got dropped in the deep end of a world entirely unfamiliar. meanwhile dakota (from after his parents death onwards) had a very difficult childhood. he spent many years without a support system - his parents gone, his aunt struggling herself and not able to care for him as he needs. but he's had time to learn to deal with that. rockfall/new haven is where he's grown up, and he knows it like the back of his hand. so they're both struggling but like in opposite ways? where vyncent has been okay for most of his life but now he hasn't had a chance to adjust, while dakota's been going through it for longer but that means he's been able to adjust and is familiar with the rules of this world.

they also have opposite ways of coping with bad things / tackling their problems. dakota shuts down. vyncent lashes out. dakota is determined to never take a life. vyncent comes from a world where fighting to the death is normal. dakota not only trusts, but idolises heroes. vyncent has been nothing but let down by them and doesn't trust them at all.

i think about that scene in season 1 so much where they're at mark's house, and tide has been taken, and dakota's just shut down. vyncent starts yelling at him because he's lost everything he had in this world and can't afford to just stop like that. it's just the perfect example of how their opposite experiences and coping mechanisms cause them to clash.

more extremely, when william gets killed. dakota completely breaks down, while vyncent starts attacking even more furiously. then vyncent is like. almost pleading (? you could say? not sure if thats the word) with dakota to just get up and fight because he can't do this alone. he can't do this without dakota. he couldn't have done any of this without dakota.

but in perhaps the more simple ways, they're quite alike. they're the epitome of dumb teenage boys. i mean, they'll just break into a duet on the train. they goof off together - the shopping cart race, that one scene in the gym in season one.

so. like. they lean on each other. they both don't have much to rely on. but they have each other. i think vyncent was probably, even if its a large part subconsicous, feeling betrayed when dakota left over the s1-2 timeskip. likewise how dakota felt betrayed over the bino and mark thing / mal amulet / belltech, etc. etc. but they stick together. no matter what they go through they get out of it, and they get out of it together.

so. okay apologies for taking so long to say so little. essentially what i like most about dakota and vyncent's friendship is that duality of relying on each other both out of necessity and because they're the only ones who really get each other, and also having the energy of like. "hey bro how many slices of pizza can i fit in my mouth at once. hey bro bet you cant backflip off of this building. hey bro let's do a karaoke duet of breaking free from high school musical"

as vyncent himself said in late season 2. they're brothers. (falls over and sobs)
