Floored by the implications of Chronos’ design in Hades 2 having Egyptian allusions.
When the gods defeated Chronos, he was cut up into tiny pieces and scattered throughout Tartarus so he couldn’t reform. Guess what other Egyptian god was cut up into pieces and scattered!!
Osiris THE LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD. For fucks sake. And GUESS how he got rematerialized??? By his witchy wife, goddess of magic, Isis 👀
The IMPLICATIONS
#Hecate 👀 u wanna join the chat?#hades 2#00#Ancient Egypt was ANCIENT already by the time the Greeks even figured out farming.#It gives this image of the previous generation of gods- the Titans- being even more mythologized than the gods already are.#Because really what could be mythological to a god if not the Titans.#Also Time being another form of Death/Lord of the Dead? 😚 👌 Sublime.#Of course time is what kills you. Time is what gets us all and brings us down to the underworld.#hades game

Magical summer: Hecate
HECATE
Category: Greco-Roman mythology
Hecate always was a quite famous goddess – already she appeared in Shakespeare’s time in popular imagination linked to witches, and still today American neo-pagans and Internet’s witches keep praising Hecate as their “goddess and queen”. Because this is mostly what Hecate is remembered for: being the goddess of witches. But as you all probably know by now, Greek gods are never just one thing and are very complex, multi-faceted beings. So who is truly Hecate?
The earliest account we have of her comes from Hesiod’s Theogony, and… it is quite interesting because Hesiod’s description of Hecate is very unique, and doesn’t correspond to the image other authors of Antiquity gave of her. Hesiod described Hecate as a goddess that Zeus gifted with authority and powers over the sky, the sea and the earth, and that acts as a benevolent and caring deity who offers all sorts of good things to whoever prays or sacrifices to her. She gives wisdom to rulers and judges, she gives victory in wars and games, she offers glory, might, abundance and wealth to whoever pray to her, she helps harvest grow and cattle multiply… Zeus even made her a “nursing” goddess who takes care of all newborns. While future depictions would represent her acting in very different domains and sometimes in a less openly “motherly” and “nursing” role, Hesiod’s description got one part that stayed around: the idea that she is a very important goddess, as important as the Olympians, and that even Zeus held her in great regards.
If we take the legend of Persephone, or its literary depiction as the “Homeric Hymn to Demeter”, Hecate already becomes more similar to what we know of her today: she is a goddess only active at night, that helps Demeter search for her missing daughter thanks to her torches that light up the darkness, and when her efforts fail she is the one that helps Demeter get the attention of Helios, the sun-god, to answer her questions – later, alongside Hermes, she helps Persephone get out of the Underworld or guides her in it every year. We get here most of Hecate’s roles and functions in classical Greek mythology. She was a goddess of the night, an entity of shadows and obscurity ; but she was the light in those darkness, somehow linked to Helios the Sun – she was a lunar goddess representing the moon. She was also the one who descended into the Underworld and came back from it: she was a psychopomp entity similar to Hermes, a bridge between the world of the living and the dead, one of the keepers of the keys of Hades’ realm. More than that, she was a liminal goddess, a deity presiding over borders and boundaries, doors and travels, the in-between and the transitions. This is notably why she was said to be the goddess of crossroads: crossroads weren’t just a liminal space of transitions, limits and travels between realms, cities, regions – it was also believed they were in-between spaces where the dead could meet the living and the mortals could see the divine. Wherever there was a crossroad, especially one between three roads, you can be sure a statue of Hecate stood nearby. This idea of Hecate as a liminal goddess fits nicely with Hesiod’s original description: she was a goddess whose powers extended between three different realms, and she was a goddess from the previous generations of gods (the Titans) that was welcomed openly by the new gods (Olympians), embodying a transition from an age to another. In fact, it seems quite obvious that Hesiod’s original description seems to be one of a lunar goddess, as we know that the moon was widely believed to have influence over the sky (celestial bodies), the moon (tides) and the earth (fertility of plants and animals).
This benevolent liminal moon-goddess was however just Hecate’s original description in early Ancient Greece. By late Ancient Greece, she had taken a much darker turn. She was less the moon goddess and more the Queen of Shadows. She was less liminal and more of a psychopomp. She took a darker turn towards death, and soon became a chthonic goddess, aka an Underworld goddess thought to live with Hades and Persephone (in fact she often was associated or confused with Persephone, both considered “Queens of the Dead”). Hecate’s psychopomp role got entirely reversed as it was now believed she led the dead out of the afterlife, under the shape of various shadows: she was the goddess that sent ghosts to haunt the living during the darkest nights, and she was the goddess who sent nightmares in the mortals sleep. In fact, she was often depicted as leading a true parade of specters and wraiths by moonless nights. In this darker, scarier, creepier incarnation, there was however still some “positivity” as she stayed a goddess of purification: people prayed to her to protect their house and cities, to keep the ghosts and unruly dead out of the living communities, she could reject and put down evil spirits, and the “bad dreams” she sent to people were merely the results of past crimes that came back to haunt them. When people prayed Hecate to have the bad dreams go away, in truth they asked for the “stain” left by a past fault to be erased, so that their innocence would protect them from nightly torment.
Then we come to the Romans, who took back Hecate and cemented two of her aspects: goddess of the moon and goddess of witchcraft. Goddess of the moon, because they fused her with Luna (their equivalent of Selene, the moon-goddess) and with Diana (the equivalent of Artemis). Already the Greeks had noted a similarity and parallels between Hecate and Artemis, both being powerful goddesses with a moon symbolism, both surrounded by a pack of wild gods, both virgin goddesses (or at least in Hecate’s case with no husband or prominent lover)… The Romans just made more obvious the underlying text. As for the “witchcraft” aspect it doesn’t come from nowhere: already the Greeks believed that Hecate was a goddess gifted in both the art of poisons and the making of medicine. And as you know now, in Ancient Greece “poison” and “medicine” are the same, they are all just drugs, “pharmakos”, philters and potions – and whoever masters the art of “pharmakos”, the art of healing and wounding, giving life and killing, is a witch, sorcerer or enchantress. This is why by late Ancient Greece, Hecate the “mistress of poisons and medicine” became linked with the two other great “witches” of Ancient Greece, Circe and Medea – some said she taught them their art, others even claimed she was actually their mother!
The Romans latched onto this specific interpretation, and emphasized it, by mixing in it the nocturnal aspect of the “Queen of Shadows” and the chthonic nature of the “Mistress of Ghosts”: she became the goddess of magic and sorcery, the deity of spells and curses, the patron of all witches and wizards. And as the Romans believed witches to be dangerous, vile, creepy, disturbing creatures, Hecate became even more frightening and disturbing – a creature that got out of the darkness to gift others with the ability to inflict storms, diseases and sterility upon others, a dreadful entity that blurred so well the line between life and death she allowed for the art of necromancy to prosper – it went to the point that some Roman authors depicted her as a “corpse-goddess” with a rotting and pale body bearing the marks of decay, and forced to wear a mask when she visits the other gods in heaven to avoid scaring them away. The connection and equation with Persephone, Queen of the Underworld, became even stronger.
And finally, Rome’s habit of including foreign gods to their cult and syncretizing their deities with others put a final nail to the idea of Hecate as a goddess of both death and magic: on one side she became fused with the Babylonian Ereshkigal, queen of the underworld and mistress of the dead, lover of Nergal the god of wars, plagues and disasters ; on the other she was associated with Isis, an Egyptian goddess renowned as a spell-weaver, poison-user and great magician.
So this is what people ended up remembering the most, and what Hecate became for the Middle-Ages and the Renaissance. The goddess of witches, the creepy deity of magic. The leader of ghosts and mother of nightmares. The goddess tied to the moon who ruled in the middle of the night over a court of shadows. The underworld queen able to open and close the doors of death at will.
Which, by extension, greatly influenced the idea people had about witches, and their ties to the night, the moon, ghosts and the underworld…

In terms of iconography, the most well-known fact about Hecate is that she is a "triple-goddess". She was usually depicted by Greeks as three women, back to back, each of the "bodies" looking into a different direction - it was usually how she was depicted on crossroads, each of her bodies looking at a different road. She was still considered an individual goddess, in fact there were also statues and paintings of her representing her as one woman - but she happened to be "triple". As time went by, late Ancient Greeks started to simplify her representation by just depicting her as a woman with three heads or three faces. And later, especially in Egyptian-inspired esoteric grounds or in ancient Hermetic texts (see my recap of Hermes Trismegistus), there was an habit to depict her as a three-headed woman but with the twist that two of her heads are those of animals. The most usual depictions go for a "snake/woman/horse" trio of heads (a depiction still very popular and well-known to this day), but there was also an alternate form with cow/woman/boar heads. Beyond that, you could recognize Hecate by the various items she held in her hands: torches (she used to light up the night), keys (symbols of her liminal role) or daggers (she had a ... quite ruthless, murderous side to her I didn't speak much about here). Outside of that you could recognize her thanks to the animals that acted as her regular companions: either snakes or dogs. Snakes because of their association with poison/medicine of course, but also because when she became more of an underworld goddess of night terrors and haunting ghosts, she was sometimes depicted with snakes in her hair or associated with other Underworld dangerous entities with snakes in their hair (like the Keres, spirits of violent death, or the Erynies, goddesses of vengeance and punishers of criminals). When a woman had snake in her hair, it was bad news in Ancient Greece. As for the dog, she was always seen followed or surrounded by wild dogs. Many people have interpreted differently her dog association: some say they were threshold guardians, and thus were fitting for a liminal goddess (notably Cerberus, the guardian of the limit between death and life, was a dog) or because they were watchdogs defending their masters at night, fitting for a night goddess protecting from evil spirits ; others say dogs were due to her poison and witchcraft associations, because dogs were often used to dig up poisonous plants or plants with so-called magical properties ; some even say it is part of Hecate's primary parallel with Artemis, and a leftover of a confusion or tie with the hounds of the hunting goddess... But overall, we know dogs were her sacred animals, and that their barking was thought to repel evil spirits just like their mistress' powers. As her sacred beast they were her usual "sacrifice animals": you could kill a dog on the road to protect yourself from the dangers of a future travel, or you could kill a dog to use their blood in purification rituals to wash yourself from nightmares, past crimes and the stain of death. The sacrifices of dogs to her were so frequent, numerous and important that the Romans ended up calling her "Canidis", "The dog-killer".

When the world falls apart, the only thing we can hold onto is ourselves (Part IV)
Series Master list
pairing: canon Eren Jaeger x reader
content: Angst, unstable relationship, breakup, smut/nswf+18, major character death, violence, blood (obviously), war (pretty obvious)
summary: War and hate. It’s what defined the world at this exact moment. You failed your comrades, and by failing them, you failed yourself. Your relationship is hanging by a thread and your enemies will not only be found on the other side of the sea, but also in the mind of the person you love the most. How will you take the reins in the face of so much destruction?
Chapter Summary: Talk doesn´t seem to be like a good attack plan and now reader has to run for their life and avoid being caught by the Jaegerists.
Words Count: 6.1k
Silence reigned in the room. Only our breaths could be heard, some agitated, others calm, as well as footsteps fading at the end of the corridor. I could feel my heart pounding hard on my chest, inwardly wishing that no one could hear it. From the distance that each one was, I doubted it was physically possible; But let's face it, in a world full of humans turned into Titans, whose possessors can regenerate their body parts, listening to the beat of a heart shouldn’t be a difficult task.
"I wanted to speak with you"
Eren's lifeless eyes weren't focused on anyone in particular, I could notice his face even darker than it had been in recent days and a look much duller. My hand on the table was very close to his, threatened with blood staining from the crimson pool that was forming on the beautiful white tablecloth.
On my left side, the little girl was shaking up and down, not looking at anyone or anything at all. She also had her hands on the table, as did everyone. I directed my gaze towards the other companions at the table, the three were reversed in a conversation that I had no intention of being part of. The only thing that interested me was to give a little security to this poor girl.
I made a little movement with my elbow and shoulder toward her, trying to get her attention, but it didn't make her turn around. I tried again, this time launching a breathless and very low 'hey', taking advantage of the voices at medium volume to lighten mine. That did work. The girl had turned her eyes to me, she was still extremely scared and it showed in her eyes and all over her face. I was very sorry to see her like this.
I gave her a slight smile, curling the tip of my lip upward, and nodded. Her gaze locked with mine for a few seconds and I could see how she was calming down, even a little, but it was there. It was a stressful situation for everyone, I didn't even want to imagine what she must feel, and if my possibilities were within bringing her some calm, I would. I made a little "s'ok" with my lips without speaking, not even whispering.
"Are you paying attention?" My gaze turned to the source of the problem again. Eren had his eyes fixed hard on my face. I thought I might have gone unnoticed, but I was wrong.
I adjusted my posture on the chair, now staring forward, but with my eyes fixed on those intense but haggard gray-green eyes. I took my gaze away from his for a second to see the girl next to me, who was again trembling with fear, and I reached my hand towards hers, returning my gaze to it’s previous position. Eren clenched his fist at this movement and furrowed his brow even more, sending me a silent and mental warning. I ignored his threat and grabbed the girl's hand, at no point taking my eyes off his and accentuating my head up high.
"Keep your hands on the table Mikasa"
His gaze now turned to his childhood friends, standing myself alone at the side of the table, failing incredibly to calm a twelve-year-old girl. And as if there was nothing that could make the situation worse and make the moment much more stressful, they had to touch on sensitive issues, issues that were like putting a finger on the sore.
"Armin, you keep going to see Annie, do you really do it of your own free will?" Was it really necessary? There was nothing, or so it seemed, that could give any indication that Annie was about to wake up, and the fact that Armin wanted to go see her didn’t seem bad at all, or at least that’s what I thought; Indeed, it clearly showed Armin's sentimental attraction to her.
Yes, Annie was an important key to the investigation of the titans, but that was four years ago, now we were just sitting back in the chair and hoping that, by some miracle, the glass that surrounded Annie and left her in a reverie state will unfreeze. That Armin came to see her didn’t change anything in the plans of the militancy, much less the legion.
"Since you inherited the memories, a part of you is now Berthold"
Ah, that’s where the shots came from. It was difficult to understand the powers and responsibilities that came with being a titan shifter. We weren’t only talking about the short life that the owners unfortunately had to endure, but also the memories of their predecessors, memories that could haunt their current owner.
Likewise, blaming Armin for Berthold's memories wasn't going to fix things. Armin was still Armin, the sweet and calm boy, willing to fight if necessary, but always opting for the least violent solution, the most civilized one. He tried it on Annie and he tried it on Berthold, failing both times.
It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair to blame Armin for having the memories of one of our enemies in his mind, memories that I never wish to obtain or see. As far as I knew, Grisha's memories, while they had been an impact towards the general knowledge of the world, hadn’t shaped Eren ... had they?
Nor was it fair to see how the same boy who had so supported his childhood friend in the years as a recruit, was internally unbalanced by the stubbornness of that friend. See how fear invaded his gaze and he was petrified to such putrid revelations.
"Eren ..." I tried to stop him, God, I swear I tried to stop him.
I tried to use the word my comrades wanted to use so badly, the words Armin wanted to use, but they weren't enough. In a thousandth of seconds, horrific ideas flashed through my mind, wishing none of them would come true. If the conversation went this way, it could end not just a friendship of years, but the sanity of all of us. I wasn't important in this trio, I was an add-on, and I couldn't allow Eren to continue destroying relationships and people wherever he stepped.
But I wasn't quick enough to stop him with words. When he finished defenestrating Armin, he turned his attention to Mikasa. Of all the people, the one who I was most afraid was her, the person who would collapse the most if he detached himself from her half-brother.
"You too Mikasa"
My eyes went wide as I heard the truths of the Ackerman clan. Created and genetically engineered to protect and follow orders, without conscience, without free will. Mikasa was devastated and I could see in her eyes how images of her childhood passed through her mind, images and memories that now seemed like a lie, a sham.
"In short ... a clan created to protect others who have no conscience of their own"
"Eren, stop" Armin was just as scared as I was, praying to any God who had been watching us that so much evil stop at once, that those words would stop coming out of that damn viperine tongue. Eren was vomiting word after word, without measuring the consequences, without measuring the damage it could cause to Mikasa's mind.
"In other words, slaves"
The situation was getting out of hand. Nothing we could say or do right now was going to help. The conversation that Armin wanted with all his might to take place was going overboard. If the others could be present with us, they would see clearly like me how the faith in his friend was dissipating with the seconds in the blond's gaze.
"At last I understand why I hated to see a slave who carried out all orders without question"
His eyes were filled with hatred, resentment, anger, contempt, and a thousand other degenerative feelings. His intention was very clear the moment he entered the room: to hurt; and he was succeeding.
He’d done me a lot of damage in the last year, such damage that it reached the darkest and inner corridors of my mind and it was impossible for me to move forward on a gray and dubious course, and now he was willing to continue doing more damage, this time to his closest friends, those people that I never thought, that never crossed my mind, he could destroy internally. He was annihilating their willpower and their desire to fight, and he’s doing so by colossal steps.
"Eren that's enough!" Armin and I shouted in unison. We didn’t necessary have to say a word or look at each other to know that the next words were going to be disastrous.
"Mikasa, I have always hated you"
That was the breaking point. Mikasa's eyes filled with tears and they didn't last for a second on her lids, they were already being spilled onto her cheeks. She was completely devastated and I couldn't blame her. The person who had given her a home after the brutal murder of her parents, the person to whom she was so devoted and would give her life, was turning his back on her, as well as killing sentimentally.
"You damn bastard!"
Armin jumped on the table with the intention of reaching the dark-haired man, but he didn’t get very far, being pulled from the chest to the hard wood of the furniture by Mikasa herself. And that only made the situation worse and agreed with Eren. It was as if fate was laughing at us for trying to pull the strings of our paths, strings that handled us like puppets and over which we had no control.
Mikasa let go of Armin's hand when she realized the act she just did, horrified with herself, and he now had the opportunity to pounce on Eren, throwing a punch in the middle of his face and throwing him to the floor. With that, the table flew backwards and in a reflex action, I also threw myself back, letting the chair fall to one side and avoiding any blow that the table could give me.
Unconsciously I lunged towards the girl next to me, preventing at all times that the table hit her or that some of the two men who were fighting each other to ended up bumping into her. I pushed her away from any crossing point and hid her behind my back, using my body as a shield against any impact that could shoot towards our position. Mikasa had also run to the left side of the wine cabinet, contemplating the scene before hers with complete sadness.
Eren's fist slammed into Armin's face, throwing him straight into the cabinet, knocking a few wines against his back and knocking a couple of ceramic plates to the floor. My instincts screamed I needed to help Armin, even knowing that he could regenerate in a matter of seconds, that the cuts and bruises weren't going to last long, but that wasn't why I wanted to help him.
It wasn’t the pain and physical blows that worried me, but the psychological anger and damage that this was entailing.
"Jaeger-san!"
Two followers slammed into the room, pointing their rifles directly at Armin and Mikasa's heads. They were unaware of my presence, paying more attention to the boy beaten from head to toe and the girl crying like a river.
I took a step forward and reaffirmed my theory, my presence wasn’t being recognized. I took another step, and another, and another, until I was right next to the fallen table and turned around, making sure the girl was still where I left her, that she was safe and sound. I gestured with my finger to my lips for her to be quiet and to stay still and turned to the scene in front of me. Eren kept beating poor Armin, who was unable to defend himself properly. He was right, in a hand-to-hand fight, Armin would be the worst off, even myself, but that didn't mean I couldn't manage to come out victorious.
Next to me, the chair Eren was sitting at a few seconds ago was still in the same place where he felt. With great care and tranquility, I bent down to grasp the back legs of it, without taking my eyes off Eren or the pseudo-guards who still had with their rifles at a shooting position, raised it to the height of my head and then smashed it against the two armed men in the stomach area. I hurriedly kicked each of them to the face, preventing them from having a chance to get up quickly, just as I slung the rifles from their shoulders with the same leg and pushed them away under a window. Without wasting time, I turned around to find Eren realizing the events that were happening next to him, and I wedged a blow in the middle of his face, in the same way Armin had done.
The blow hadn't been quite strong since he didn't fall to the ground, but it was enough to throw him off balance and make him leave Armin alone. The blonde fell to the floor, exhausted and sore from the multiple punchs to the face he had suffered, and I continued to give a new blow to the stomach height to the brunette in front of me. One of his knees fell to the ground, giving me the opportunity to grab his arm and twist him from behind, immobilizing him. I put my other arm over his armpit, preventing him from moving his arms and his upper body.
“That’s enought you fucking bastard. Mikasa..."
My face was on the crook of Eren's neck, preventing me from seeing clearly ahead, but my partial gaze sought out those tear-filled gray eyes to signal her to help me. My voice was already a signal for help even if I wasn't yelling. I could see how those eyes were full of conflicts, a battle was being fought inside her mind and she seemed to not be able to reason what she saw.
"MIKASA!"
This time I did yell, asking with all my will Mikasa could come to her senses, that she could help me with the lost cause Eren was now. I wasn’t going to be able to control him for much longer, I didn’t have the necessary strength and that was why I was trying to reach her. But the fear in my eyes was reflected when I saw that she wasn’t moving, that she was simply watching with tears in her eyes, eyes that would surely be cloudy and couldn’t see clearly. My fear was reflected when I saw that no one was going to be able to help me.
Eren hit his head against mine, right on the septum of my nose. My head jerked back involuntarily and my arms lost support on his. He grabbed my left hand, holding it high, much higher than my head, uncovering my stomach and his knee hitting it’s pit, not just once, but twice. His leg hit my knee, yanking it back and knocking me off what little balance I had left.
His grip on my hand released and I fell hard on my knees and hands onto the wooden floor. My stomach was spasming and I regurgitated bile, struggling to take in some air that I was deprived of in a matter of milliseconds. I coughed all I could until my stomach settled back, but I was unable to get back to my feet. I felt two pairs of hands grab my arms and I stood up abruptly, grabbing my hair even and looking up as the turquoise eyes set at my point of view.
"Why do you always have to be in the middle? Why can you never stay quiet in a corner without sticking your nose in someone else's butt? " Without my noticing, his fist slammed into my nose, hitting the septum back and most likely breaking it. My head cocked to the side and I could see drops of blood falling to the ground and a stream spreading from under my nostrils to my chin. "It was frustrating to see how in all the missions you were there, being a useless without importance"
Useless? I was the one who treated his wounds in training, tying his head when he hit the stone floor in his practice with the movement equipment. I was the one who put cold water on his ankle when he bent it while running through the lush forest on a rainy day. I was the one who pushed him to the side when he was going to hit a stone face down for not looking where he was going. I was one of those who saved him when he was captured by Reiner and Berthold. I was the one who pulled him out of the middle of an onslaught of titans when he first activated the coordinate, even with a wounded and bleeding shoulder.
I was the one who slapped him to make him stop crying inside the cave when Rod Reiss was transforming, claiming this wasn’t the time for his tantrums and that if he wanted to make a change in this whole twisted story, he better put down the crocodile tears for when he was in the quiet of his bed.
It was me who warned him of dozens of Marleyan soldiers when he shed from his titan back at Libero.
“And yet you continued to stick to me like a lap dog to the leg of it’s owner. Yet another slave. Makes me gag just looking at your face"
I turned my face to him, fixing my eyes on his, conveying all the hatred and contempt he was making me feel. I felt my heart shrink at such crude words, but my duel had started several weeks ago and they didn’t achieve the same effect as with Mikasa. What he did was get me to give him a contemptuous half smile and laugh in his face. His eyes darkened when he saw my reaction. Whether he expected it or not was no longer important to me. He gave a slight nod to the men behind me and I noticed how my arms were gathered around my back and tightened so that I couldn't move. One of them walked away from me and went straight towards Mikasa and Armin, pointing his rifle at their heads.
"Take them, the brat who killed Sasha too"
I wasn’t going to allow it.
My two comrades were pushed into the corridor outside while I glared at them waiting for my turn to go out with the man behind me. The girl was completely scared and she had walked to the door of her own will, perhaps avoiding being further hurt. The moment Eren was about to leave, I slapped my head against the man's face repeatedly until his grip weakened and I was able to move freely again. I turned to him, kneeing him in the face and stomach. When I managed to reduce him to the ground, making him roll into a ball and couldn't move without causing him pain when he breathed, I wanted to turn towards the door with the sole intention of getting the poor girl out of the conflict. My hand was halfway searching for her when Eren grabbed it and yanked me back violently, slamming me against the table.
I lost my balance for a second and as an involuntary act I grabbed the tablecloth, but that didn’t do much, making me fall to the floor in the same way. Eren lunged at me, his body falling completely on top of mine and pinning me to the ground. His legs were positioned at each place of my torso and his fist hit my face not once, not twice, but three times, noticing how the cheek bone began to burn. I lifted my knee to the side of his ribs, my nails finding the skin of his face, and pushed him toward the table, hitting his back against the hard wood and tangling with the tablecloth.
I got up to run, but his leg hit my ankle causing me to fall on my face and hands. When I wanted to turn around again I felt his weight against mine, his legs now better placed on my knees and both hands holding my neck. He squeezed, I felt like the air was beginning to thin, my vision was turning white and I could feel my face redden. I tried to hit him in the face, but I wasn't strong enough to make him stop. I reached the same hand towards my side visualizing one of the chairs thrown by the fight with Armin but Eren was faster and his knee was now pressing against my inner arm.
I was running out of air and at any moment I was going to lose consciousness. In a desperate attempt I turned my eyes around me as best I could and found a bottle of wine broken in half lying a few inches from us, though too far away for me to just reach out. My fingers couldn't even touch the surface of the glass and on my last attempt before I fainted, I pushed myself towards the bottle, grabbed it by the spout, and pulled it towards Eren's face, driving the broken surface onto his cheek and eye.
Eren grunted in pain and released his hands from my neck, giving me a chance to push him back with both legs and barely get up to run. With cloudy vision and an incredible urge to cough thanks to the pressure on my cervicals and thyroids, I could not make out the whereabouts of the Marleyan girl and ran out the door to the corridor. As I passed the threshold slamming the door wide, rifle bullets were aimed at me, miraculously failing to hit my body. I shrunk my body as much as I could without stopping my feet and looked towards the end of the corridor, finding the second man who was with Armin and Mikasa shooting at me from behind them.
I was about to fall to the ground when Mikasa slammed her shoulder against his, causing him to stagger backward and she struggled to get the rifle out of his hands. In those few seconds of advantage, Armin stepped between the line of fire and me in case any bullets were fired and yelled from his position.
"Go!" I don’t know if it was due to lack of air that I couldn’t react at all quickly and when seeing my indecision to run to where the two of them were or go through the back window, Armin again shouted angrier and more determined "Just go!"
Behind me was a window with broken glass, I assumed due to the bullet holes of the rifle, with a simple blow with my elbow I could break a large part of the glass and jump to the side of the street, but not before giving one last look at Armin and Mikasa, who were still battling the man and Eren coming out of the room half healed and with smoke coming from his wounds.
I fell onto the cobbled street and started running towards the main avenue. My legs were on fire and my lungs were about to collapse, every step I took was a stronger pain in my throat. I wanted to stop and cough to regain normality in my breathing, but I heard behind me the footsteps of people running and yelling to stop me. They were chasing me and if I kept on foot I wasn't going to get very far. I put my fingers to my mouth and whistled as best I could, calling out to Phillip from afar. I had left my horse right at the front door of the restaurant, on the other side of the avenue, so I ran in that direction in order to find him early.
The so-called Jaegerists kept firing behind me, a bullet struck my leg and hit the stone on the ground and ricocheted to the left side against a house. Multiple bullets continued to brush my body, some passing very close to my face and others aimed directly at my legs. In the distance I could see Phillip riding towards me, getting closer and closer. When he came to my side, without stopping, I grabbed his leash and jumped on his back, leaving half my body hanging from lack of strength. I grabbed his neck and motioned for him to turn around and head straight for the avenue.
Phillip was always a fast horse, I thanked the universe for entrusting me to this horse from the first recon mission. He was always there for me, a loyal, strong and very audacious horse, banking me on every expedition and whatever madness crossed my mind to save my companions or myself. I always thanked him for his swiftness and now more than ever I was thanking him in a shaking voice as he continued galloping through the crowd, heading toward the wall’s gate.
Having left the Jaegerists at a considerable distance, I positioned myself correctly on his back, grabbing onto the leash and leaning forward to stroke his head for his great work. I gave myself the freedom to cough and clear my throat of any discomfort, but multiple blows and a firm rumbling behind us made me realize that nothing was over yet, as they were still chasing me, now with their own horses. There weren't many, maybe five or six people and a coach from what I could make out from the hollow of my shoulder, but they were armed and that was what made them dangerous.
I told Phillip to keep riding, to go even faster, to get to the gate as soon as possible. With the riding, the saddle hit my legs and crotch, annoying and hurting me at the same time, but I had to hold it and keep going; we had to get to the gate and fast, very fast. We were a few blocks away when I saw the gate in the distance, wide open and with their respective guards on either side of the threshold.
"Close the door!" I screamed as loudly as I could, feeling my vocal cords tear in the attempt and made my throat hurt even more. The guards turned their heads towards my figure, but none deigned to do what I asked them, they just stared at me stupidly.
"CLOSE THE FUCKING DOOR!" I coughed as I let out such a scream hoping it was clear enough in the message. Seeing me continue to gallop towards the gate and now hearing the bullets being fired, the guards ran towards the internal mechanism and began to close it, giving me enough time to pass through it without being crushed.
The gate ended up closing when Phillip had already traveled about ten meters outside the wall, leaving the Jaegerists on the other side.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I dipped my head into the clear water of the river. The cold of the current massaged my battered muscles and cleaned the still bleeding wounds. It was already the third time that I’d put my head in the water and I could notice how little by little the pain was dissipating, but knew that the next day I would have a remotely swollen face and a septum to treat.
We had gotten quite far from the wall, maybe forty minutes or an hour galloping, and we had stayed by the river so as not to get lost. Phillip took the time to drink plenty of water and eat some of the dry grass that surrounded the river; I owed my partner a big one and if it was necessary to spend the little savings I had on a better chair and care for him, I would give it all but when things were calmer and we could go home.
I lay on my back on the grass into a star-shaped possition and gazed up at the clear sky except for a few fluffy clouds. If it din’t for the recurring events in the last month, I would have taken the liberty of enjoying this beautiful day and the days before that surely there were, but I was too blind and busy to notice them.
The grass felt soft except for a few small stones scattered unevenly and the small field insects that landed on my arms and face and then flew off. It was relaxing, too relaxing. The heat of the sun's rays hit my skin and gave me a comforting sensation that soaked down to my bones, generating a pleasant interior warmth and tingling; I wanted to sleep, I wanted to rest, my body was forcing me to take a break, and this place, this moment, seemed like the perfect one. I closed my eyes, wishing sleep and tranquility would come as quickly as possible, but a vibration in the floor and Phillip's screaming snapped me out of my trance.
I raised my head, surveying my surroundings, the vibrations getting stronger as if they were getting closer. I looked at Phillip and followed his line of sight, far over the horizon, there was a litter of horses galloping over the stone paths that had been built a couple of years ago between each wall. Green overcoats could be distinguished over the horizon of the clear blue sky.
"Fuck, I was hoping to be calm for a couple more hours, come on Phillip"
I got on the back of my horse for the third time that day and directed it to the opposite side of where the other horses were riding. Being in the middle of an open field, there weren’t many houses where to take refuge, even though they had built a lot of houses between both walls. A little in the distance was a lush forest of tall trees, but not as tall as those of the Forest of Giant Trees, that enormous nature of fifty and eighty meters.
We stopped right at the entrance, hoping we had distanced ourselves from the litter of horses, but when I got off Phillip to rest my legs, I saw the path we had come from, and in the distance the same horses that he had seen on the stone path were approaching. There was no longer any doubt that they were the Jaegerists.
I turned my head towards the forest, from what I could see from the entrance the trees weren’t at a considerable distance from each other and the small dirt roads were too narrow. I didn’t know this forest at all and the mere fact of entering without knowing the terrain through the narrow corridors didn’t give me much confidence. But going around it wasn’t a good option either and I would end up being visualized in a matter of seconds. We were in a dead end, in a maze, and I had to play the few cards I had cleverly. I unbuttoned the coat which was already very badly placed on my shoulders and tied it on the strap.
"Phillip I need you to keep running, go as fast as you can and as far as your legs can reach" I pulled the saddle off his back, dropping it to the ground and tried to hide it inside a nearby bush with my foot. I brought his head closer to mine, resting my forehead on his muzzle and stroking his side one last time before saying goodbye.
"Go!" I smacked him on the back and Phillip ran down the narrow forest paths. As for me, I tried to dispel the footprints the horse had left behind before sending me to run down another path and go as far as I could into the heart of the forest.
I ran, ran and ran, my legs were on the edge, branches and thorns were digging into my skin making it burn every time other scratches were created in the same place. At this fact, I was resigned to the fact my clothes were bleeding and torn, as well as the matted hair and bruises on my body. My foot made contact with a tree root and I fell between the others, right in a hole, hitting my head and shoulder in the fall. I scraped my arm too, and my shirt was now full of dirt and dry leaves; surely my hair was the same. I heard heavy footsteps near me and I rolled into a ball in the hole, hiding behind the tree and seeking its protection.
"Find them, we can't let them escape"
Six people broke up and each one ran in a different direction in search of me. For an instant, my heart skipped a beat and my breath hitched when I saw one of them pass by the side of the tree where I was. At no point did he turn towards my location so I was able to breathe again. Minutes passed until I stopped hearing nearby footsteps, I got up leaning against the bark and kept walking inward, finding myself up a steep hill down.
I let gravity guide me and my feet unconsciously ran downward, avoiding rocks and bushes along the way. As I reached the low surface of the hill I tripped over my feet, losing my balance and colliding with a small tree that was right in the middle of where I was walking. As I stood up and turned it around, I came face to face with a Jaegerist, hooded, rifle in hand.
"Hey! You- "
My reflexes acted on instinct, my leg went straight to his ribs, hitting him squarely in the side of his stomach. I grabbed the rifle with both hands and hit it with the butt on both sides of the face and discarded it to the side when blood began to come out of his mouth. My hand went straight to his head, slamming it against the tree over and over again without stopping until his body fell unconscious on the grass. The interaction lasted no more than fifteen seconds, but it felt like I was about to explode. So many blows received and produced were leaving collateral effects on my body; at any moment I would pass out.
During the three years of training I have gotten used to physical confrontation and body training that lasted more than five hours, not to mention the months we spent annihilating each Titan within the walls. Those missions that lasted all day, if not more, were nothing compared to what my body was going through right now.
I sat next to the body, trying to catch my breath and rest my eyes. I rested my head on the tree and when I opened my eyes I saw a black figure in the middle of a grove a few meters away. He didn’t carry a rifle and seemed to have no intention of running to any specific place, he simply deigned to look around him, at the ground and towards the treetops. I froze to see Eren staring down at the body.
I shrank as much as I could to the left, hiding in the middle of the bushes, body to the ground, without taking my eyes off that figure that was now heading towards the unconscious body of one of his followers. I crawled back until I found a tree wide enough to hide.
"I know you are here"
It was the only thing I heard him say. My blood ran cold and a cold sweat began to form on my forehead. I was scared, very scared, I wasn’t going to deny it, but this wasn’t the time to sit and watch how they corner me little by little until they capture me. If this was the moment, I was going to give everything to get out of here. I stood up resolutely, taking a deep breath, and showed my face to my perpetrator.
"Do you want to pick up where we left off?"

Task: Development
Describe your character in a few words. Funny, amazing, the best -- Finn’s words. I would say charming, friendly, loyal
What do you know about your character that they don’t know yet? Finn is 100% unaware that he’s a big doofus, and he thinks he’s an absolute catch.
What are your character’s major flaws? Generally just being a bit of an idiot, not really thinking before he acts, and being overly cautious about certain things.
What would your character give their life for? Noel, Wyatt, Mira, Briar. They’re his absolute world, and Finn would die to protect any of them. @absentialucis @wyatt-thompson @obscuritas-est-lux
What is your character’s greatest asset? His charming smile? His bluest of blue eyes? His very small ego? It would probably be how caring he is, when ti comes to any living thing, human or animal.
What would completely break your character? Noel died and he’d never felt anything like that before, like the world was collapsing in on him. The loss of someone he is so close to... no pain will ever be as bad as that.
How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project? Finn likes to portray that he’s a ladies man, that everyone wants him when really he’s just a bit of an idiot and everyone just sort of goes, ‘Oh, it’s only Finn’
What is your character afraid of? Now don’t laugh, but he’s very very afraid of jellyfish. He’s a son of Poseidon who hates a sea creature, but absolutely no-one knows.
Where would your character fall on a politeness/rudeness scale? I’d say he’s definitely an 8 in the politeness range - he’s a nice guy after all!
If your character could choose a different identity, who would they pick? Finn wants to be Batman. Who cares if he’s real or not, he wants to ride around in the Batmobile, wear cape and speak with a really deep voice.
In what or whom is your character’s greatest faith in? His family, of course. Finn has faith in them all 100%, that no matter what happens they will always have each others back.
What was the best thing in your character’s life? His friendship with his brother, was always a massive highlight of his childhood. He always had someone to rely on, before Wyatt came around of course that was his best friend.
What was the worst thing in your character’s life? His mother. Lilith is... a challenge. Let’s just leave it at that, shall we?
What is a favorite flavor or smell of your character? The sea air, the smell of seaweed, it all makes Finn feel safe and at peace.
What seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character? Finn in uncontrollable laughter “NOEL BEING STUCK IN THE TREE... THE CAT... ”
What is your character’s secret wish? To get away from Icaria, although it’s not a secret to some people. He wants to get those he cares about away from this evil place, and somewhere much safer where gods won’t appear and smite people during charity events.
What is your character’s greatest achievement? Becoming a veterinarian - people doubted him because of his party boy attitude, but he was able to pass his exams with flying colours.
What is your character’s deepest regret? Not being there when Noel died to stop it from happening, and not being there to stop Briar from being kidnapped. It makes him sick to know that these things happened, and he wasn’t there to at least try and stop it from happening.
What is your character’s deepest disappointment? Being a Thompson by name. It means he’s affiliated to Lilith and Morgana, which he’d rather not.
What is your character reluctant to tell people? That he’s terrified of jellyfish? That he’s also thirty years old and is getting past the point where he wants to be out at 3am dancing, but he’ll still do it to keep up pretences.
What is your character hiding from themselves? That he’s not 23 any more and has to slow down. He also wants to play it cool with Briar, but inside he really just wants to tell her that he loves her, and wants her to move in with him.
What makes this character angry? What calms them? People fucking with his family. Don’t do it. Just... don’t. Noel is probably the only person on the island who can calm him down when he’s that heated, because he knows him so well.
List situations in which your character would not have control over themselves. Anything happening to his family, his friends, his girlfriend or his practice. If someone challenged his intelligence as well because of his personality, that would rile him up.
How strong is your character’s emotions? Controllable? Uncontrollable? They’re quite uncontrollable at certain times, once he snaps, it’s hard for him to calm down. However, being a vet, he knows how to remain calm in stressful situations. Kinda. Well, no, actually, that’s a lie. That only works with animals and surgery. He’s a very unstable person.
What wakes your character up in the middle of the night? Briar stealing the duvet - he cannot sleep when he’s cold, he’s a bit of a moaner about it to be fair. He hates being cold when he’s sleeping. Other than that, he sleeps like a log. Someone could break in and he wouldn’t hear a thing.
Describe a recurring dream and/or nightmare. The Jellyfish nightmare? Erm, no ignore that, he doesn’t want anyone to know about that. Theres another one though. He’s a puddle that keeps being stepped in by people. He has no idea what he means, but he doesn’t like it.
Describe your character’s family. His mother is the worst mother alive, period. His siblings are the best in the world. His half siblings are great. His cousins are amazing. He’s got a great, huge family in fact - just removed the previous generation, and they’d all be better off.
Name your character’s favourite person and why. Noel. Sorry Briar, but it is. His brother is his other half, with only a short amount of time between them in age, Finn and Noel are a pair that will never be broken up. He can’t remember a time that the two have ever seriously argued, not just over something petty, or in stressful situations. He’s just his best friend.
How many friends does your character have? Finn actually has quite a few friends! He’s a personable person, likes to chat and is generally very open and friendly, so he makes friends quite easily.
How many friends does your character want? As many as he can get! In Finn’s eyes, one can never have too many friends.
How would a friend or close relative describe your character? They’d probably just sigh and be like... well, he’s just Finn, isn’t he?
Who depends on your character? Why? Do the animals in the surgery count? They aways rely on Finn to be in every day (with Noelle’s help of course because he’d be absolutely lost without her) to feed them and make them better. He likes to think that his siblings depend on him too, but he also knows that they’re very independent people. @icarialex
Who does your character most want to please? Why? Obviously Briar - he’s a little bit, teensy tiny bit older than her and wants her to think that he’s a cool guy, and not just a thirty-year old weirdo that has a younger girlfriend. There is a slight worry in his mind that she’s going to find someone closer to her age and leave him, but he also knows that won’t happen. Probably.
How does your character feel about sex? Loves it. Here for it, all day, every day. Well, most anyway. He’s got to get up early to go to work.
How does your character feel about romantic relationships? Finn loves what he has with Briar. Before realising that he was falling for her, he was all up for sleeping around for the rest of his life following his failed wedding attempt. But she changed things up, didn’t she? Made his head do a 180, and he’s fallen hard.
If your character had to live in utter seclusion, what six items would they bring? Wait, so he can’t bring Briar or his family? Then he’s not going. He has to? Ugh, fine. A collection of Agatha Christie books, his hot water bottle (don’t even think about judging), a razor (to keep his hair and beard perfect of course), a sleeping bag, his comfiest hoodie (he’ll get it back off of Briar), and a guitar. May as well learn a new skill whilst he’s stuck alone.
What is your character’s most noticeable trait and most noticeable physical feature? His eyes are pretty blue, they’re quite striking. And he’s always got a smile on his face, showing that he’s a very open person who is always ready for a chat.
How does your character feel about work? Finn loves what he does. He gets to spend all day with animals, annoying the hell out of Noelle, and making them better again - he’s an animal hero, what’s not to love!
Write one headcanon. Finn’s three favourite movies are Titanic, Armageddon and Mary Poppins. Titanic is so emotional, what’s not to love, Armageddon has Bruce Willis saving the world, and JULIE MOTHER FUCKING ANDREWS in Mary Poppins, it’s magical.
Write one additional thing about your character. He really does want to get a dog, but he’s worried about getting one because he’s seen what happens when dogs get sick, and couldn’t bear to love something and for it to get old in front of his eyes. It makes him sad.

Fan Fiction Road: The Altar of EyeBeast
SUGGESTION PHASE CLOSED
Driving down Fan Fiction Road in the dark of night, your car suddenly breaks down as you pass through a thickly wooded area. Devoid of phone service, you find yourself drawn to a strange light in the tree line. Pushing through the bushes you find yourself standing in front of an old church. The pictures and strange runes along the walls do not appear to come from any known religion. Peeking up at the stained glass window, you see a glimmer of the light that first drew you in. Steeling your nerves, you push open the imposing set of doors and step inside.
Your nose is assaulted with the scent of heavy incense. You find yourself in in the center chamber where dozens of hooded figures dressed in black robes are gathered. They don’t appear to pay much attention to you, even as the door shuts loudly behind you. The reason becomes evident as you look at the thing atop the grey, stone altar.
Its shape mimics that of a singular, human eye blown up to the size of a hot air balloon. Its grey sclera counteracts the void of black making up its glowing pupil and iris. The eye shifts gradually, to both observe its followers and maintain a glimmering cloud in the center. Mesmerized by the thing’s strange aura, you take another step forward to look into the anomaly.
Upon a closer look, you see dozens of images pass through the cloud. The images depict characters from various, popular franchises going through strange and unusual sequences. As off-putting as some of the scenes are, you can’t help watching out of either curiosity or genuine enjoyment. A tap on your shoulder brings you back to reality.
Turning your head, you are met with the soft gaze of a woman with a shaved head. The eye creature is drawn on her forehead in ink, surrounded by the same symbols from outside. “Hello traveler,” she says in a low voice. “I see you’ve stumbled upon our little gathering.”
Without a word, she leads you deeper into the crowd. “We are the followers of the All Seeing One, the deity you see before you. Their power is immense, able to alter space, time, and various realities to create pocket dimensions for its own amusement. From time to time, it gives us certain request. In return for providing a list of acceptable candidates, it demonstrates its powers to us by recreating the scene using the choices agreed upon by its followers.”
As soon as she stops talking the image at the altar disappears, making the rest of the hooded figures turn towards you. “If your mind is open and your desires forthcoming, feel free to join our group of worship under the eye of the All Seeing One. However, if you reject our offer we will have no choice…but to politely ask you to leave.”
Someone in the crowd purposefully clears their throat. “After you’ve helped yourself to the food table of course,” she adds. “Especially Stephen’s snicker-doodles, they are just divine.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the past few years now, I’ve made it a tradition to have people vote on what kind of fan fiction story I write next. Typically, I would pick a subject (weight gain, transformations, etc.) and have people suggest various characters and scenarios that fit the subject. While I have enjoyed the previous sessions, I want to shake things up a bit in terms of how things are done and what kind of stories I get to write.
If you’ve read the above story, it sets the stage for what I want to do. I’m going to provide five different scenarios, each of which is a different request from the All Seeing One. For two weeks, your task will be to suggest offerings (characters) that will fit the criteria for each scenario. Once the suggestions are in, there will be a survey that will determine which stories you want me to write and with which characters. And yes, I said stories.
My plan with this session is to suggest ideas that can be told in relatively short stories. Using this method, I should be able to do multiple stories going in order of popularity. I can’t promise that I’ll do every single one, but I’ll try to do most of them. If you want to get involved and become a member of the Church of EyeBeast, take a look below at the guidelines and scenarios. Please read carefully.
Guidelines:
To suggest a character/characters, send the name of the character, what franchise they’re from, and which scenario you want them in. You can either use my ask box or message me directly
Regardless of method you use to suggest a character, no names will be attached to the candidates.
You can submit as many suggestions as you wish until I close the submission phase.
You are free to suggest any characters you want, but if you want to suggest one from something I know, you can refer to my media sheet: https://www.deviantart.com/eyebeast.....heet-819010665
NO CHILDREN
I will be looking just for characters, not scenarios.
The same character can be suggested for difference scenarios as long as they fit the criteria.
During the suggestion phase there will be no cap on how many characters can be suggested for a scenario. However, once the polls are made I will be narrowing down the character pools to no more than 10 entries each.
The suggestion phase will last for two weeks, ending on JULY 15TH. At that time, I will open up the survey for people to vote. After another week, I will close the survey and announce the results.

Personification of Time The ancient Greeks began to associate chronos, word for Time, with the agricultural god Cronos, who had the attribute of a harvester's sickle. The Romans equated Cronos with Saturn, who also had a sickle, and was treated as an old man, often with a crutch. In ancient Hebrew, Saturn is called 'Shabbathai'. Its angel is Cassiel. Its intelligence or beneficial spirit is Agiel (layga) and its spirit (darker aspect) is Zazel (lzaz). Ancient Chinese and Japanese culture designated the planet Saturn as the Earth Star. This was based on Five Elements which were traditionally used to classify natural elements. Father Time Department at MHC Virtual Museum
Leather Father Time
Leather Father Time In Ottoman Turkish, Urdu and Malay, its name is 'Zuhal', derived from Arabic. The wings and hour-glass were early Renaissance additions, and he eventually became a companion of the Grim Reaper, personification of Death, often taking his scythe. Father Time may have as an attribute a snake with its tail in its mouth, an ancient Egyptian symbol of eternity. Saturn is a god in ancient Roman religion, and a character in Roman mythology. Saturn was described as a god of generation, dissolution, plenty, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal and liberation. Saturn's mythological reign was depicted as a Golden Age of plenty and peace. After the Roman conquest of Greece, he was conflated with the Greek titan Cronus, becoming known as a god of time. Saturn's consort was his sister Ops, with whom he fathered Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto, Juno, Ceres and Vesta. Saturn was especially celebrated during the festival of Saturnalia each December, perhaps the most famous of the Roman festivals, a time of feasting, role reversals, free speech, gift-giving and revelry. The Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum housed the state treasury and archives, aerarium of the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire. The planet Saturn and the day of the week Saturday are both named after him. Around New Year's Eve, the media, editorial cartoons use the convenient of Father Time as the personification of the previous year (or "the Old Year") who typically "hands over" the duties of time to the equally allegorical Baby New Year or who otherwise characterizes the preceding year. In these depictions, Father Time is usually depicted wearing a sash with the old year's date on it. Time is often depicted revealing or unveiling the allegorical Truth, sometimes at the expense of a personification of Falsehood, Fraud, or Envy. This theme is related to the idea of veritas filia temporis (Time is the father of Truth). Father Time is an established symbol in numerous cultures, and appears in a variety of art and media. In some cases as Father Time, in other cases they may have another name (such as Saturn) but the characters demonstrate the attributes which Father Time has acquired over the centuries. Baby New Year's purpose varies by myth, but he generally performs some sort of ceremonial duty over the course of his year such as chronicling the year's events or presiding over the year as a symbol. Hourglass History, Father Time The Changing Iconography of Father Time Though Saturn-Cronus, as Panofsky suggested in 1939, is the single most important influence on the Father Time of the Western World, the two have been very differently represented. They seem to have little more than age in common, and this impression is strengthened when we consider their natures. The accretions and metamorphoses — as benevolence, nudity, forelock, wings, hourglass, and scythe — which gave to Saturn the symbols that we have come to associate with Father Time are traced through a number of works including the illustrators of Petrarch, the emblem books, and Hogarth. The change that we are tracing is from a Saturn who had castrated his father and devoured his own children — the saturnine and even malevolent patron of cripples and criminals — to a Father Time who by the sixteenth century was frequently depicted as the benevolent father of Truth. Among other developments, Father Time, who had earlier taken over the symbols of Death, stands back aghast from him by the time of Quarles’ Hieroglyphikes (1638). In Hogarth’s last work Tailpiece, or the Bathos (1764), Time — now more sinned against than sinning — expires surrounded by his broken symbols. Though Father Time did not die (Cupid and he are the only characters from the old emblem books that survive), he is today a very different figure from that depicted in the earlier illustrations. The main purpose of my essay has been to delineate the changing iconography of Father Time, while a subsidiary purpose has been to relate this to important developments in technology and society. Father Time Exhibition soon at MHC virtual museum FATHER TIME AND THE WEEPING VIRGIN Several versions of this topic contain different components which have been related to mythology, Judaism and Christianity; yet it is ultimately a Masonic carving. It symbolizes that time, patience and perseverance will accomplish all things. The most common symbols are Father Time, a Virgin, a broken column, an urn, a sprig of acacia, and a book, all of which rest on the top level of three steps. Father Time is most often depicted as an old man with long hair and beard, and a pair of wings. A scythe and hourglass are symbols associated with him. The scythe represents the Divine harvest and the hourglass denotes that the sands of time bring us closer to death. As the scythe cuts the harvest, so life is ended by Father Time. He stands behind a virgin (or young woman) attempting to untangle the ringlets of her hair. It symbolizes that with time and perseverance all things can be accomplished. The mythological Goddess Rhea is represented by a virgin or weeping woman who grieves over the loss of a loved one. Symbols differ in sculptures, the most common being an urn in her left hand and a sprig of acacia in her right hand. Acacia is an evergreen and represents the immortality of the soul. The urn is a symbol of death and was used to collect tears of the mourners. It is often shown resting on a book symbolic of the Book of Life where names of the righteous were recorded to ensure entry into Heaven. Other representations show the virgin holding a scroll which is a symbol of life. She can also be found holding a chisel or a mallet. She stands before a sundered column symbolic of a life cut short. One thing I’ve been thinking about; I’m not shy in balancing out the boy/gal/nonbinary ratios (generally in favor of the latter two) and Transformers is shaping up to be a pretty important deal in Crossthicc, both in terms characters present in the factions, overall influence on the aliens and societies seen, metaphysics and the scale of aliens in general… so what of their main gods?
What of Primus, the creator of all things? What of Unicron, the deity of undeath and absolute extinction? And waht if the 13 Original Primes, the first true Transformers and gods to many aliens?
I had the idea; what if in Crossthicc, Primus and Unicron are fembot goddesses?
For one thing, as Transformers, visual presentation is largely a matter of personal choice, and its not as though there’s much of a reason for them canonically to not be. For another, it’s kind of awesome.
In this case, both of them still have largely the same motivations and outlooks as in canon; the biggest chance here is simply that they are giant goddesses, but still have the same significance to the setting as a whole.
Primus, here, is generally considered the mother of all life, whether in a literal or figurative sense; while mechanical life is specifically made in her image - and the argument can be made that organic life is an aberration - she still laid the seeds for organic life to evolve, and they are metaphysically her children. She tends towards a gravid, maternal shape that the big ladies of the MILF fleet often unknowingly emulate. As far as anyone knows, she may in fact BE the first MILF in the cosmos, or close to it.
While Primus is certainly present in-fic, it’s not clear where she is. Originally she had divided parts of a previous avatar into various worlds her Transformers could call home after they successfully beat Unicron in ages past, but when the corrupt Functionalist government forcibly combined all those worlds into the single planet of Cybertron without consideration for the culture clashes, their corruption and cruelty set the seeds for a massive civil war. Cybertron has long since been inactive and dead… but Primus herself lives.
Primus is a gentle and noble soul, who loves all living things regardless of what they are, and is largely an incredibly passive figure. While she may act on her own, she will do nothing of the sort until there is no other option. She would rather act by inspiring others: “It is best that mortals win their battles without being sure if I did anything at all. It is the best way for them to grow.” In particular, she endorses growth, change and mutation of all sorts, and her blood, the material known as Energon, induces the growth of life and transformations of all kinds, which is considered sacred to her. She is the goddess of Transformers, after all.
Primus is worshiped by countless entities, across the multiverse, though they may not be aware of it; many a robotphobic civilization has revered a creator god and unknowingly been giving homage to the machine-goddess herself. Appropriately, she takes whatever form she pleases, manifesting in the dreams and making herself clear to a thousand prophets, and the greatest of those who speak in her name is the Prime of Cybertron, with the Matrix of Leadership a token of her very flesh, given to anoint her chosen ones and convey her will to all living things, who are her people; from the tiniest micro-organisms, to the mightiest sapient war machines. However, her power to manifest into the material planes are limited, and she is highly reluctant to do so again and risk more disaster as she has in the past. She is so distant, in fact, that many other gods and goddesses act on her behalf, making her something of a greater good paragon even by the standard of genuine deities.
The 13 Primes are all alive and well - even if this seems completely impossible - and are flat out gods, though not on the same scale as Primus herself. Generally, assume that they are all non-binary or fembots, with the notable exception of Megatronus and Solus Prime, who are definitely male and female respectively. Of note is Onyx Prime, who is usually referred to by masculine pronouns but can be changed up to suit the way the AU shapes out. Onyx is the progeniator of beastformers, or Transformers who assume monstrous and animal-themed alternate forms, and is named for the pure black shade of their metal form; they were the most ferocious of the Primes, the most monstrously horrifying in appearance… and the wisest, and kindest, of them all. They gave rise to the world of Eukaris, which became the land of beastformers, and later the nation-state of Simfur on Cybertron. Grimlock is the last king of Simfur, and a fervant worshiper of Onyx Prime, which may have gotten the attention of this long dormant deity of honor and civilization.
Uncron has a bit more of a femme fatale vibe, and her habit of devouring entire planets is more strictly vore themed, and done in her humanoid mode rather than her planet form. Sort of a combination of Galacta, Daughter of Galactus, with elements of a truly malicious goddess of death and destruction. While her physical form is a gorgeously curvy fembot, she is incredibly bad news; she would devour all the multiverse if she could, for unknown reasons; as it is, she may well be a personification of the idea of cosmic extinction, and undying hatred. Some rumors suggest that Unicron and Primus were originally components of a more ancient titan, and that Unicron was originally that titan’s cancerous sickness, and to this day Unicron acts as such.
Unicron’s sole goal appears to be spreading death and ruin, and to a lesser extent making Primus irritated by making life miserable for the mortals she cares so much for. However, she is fundamentally a creative entity, and appears to be making something with all the death she has made. Perhaps she devours planets and is recycling them into new creations, or is compelled to outdo Primus at her own game. One such creation are the mysterious Reapers (of Mass Effect fame), here the vanguards of Unicron and her attempt to improve on the idea of the Transformers. When she devours entire species, she shapes their digested essence into a Reaper and endows it with her own essence, and thus she is surrounded by a vast fleet and living temple to her own insatiable hunger and bloodlust. Eternally they worship their mother-goddess, praising her and living solely for her twisted world-view. She finds this… pleasing. This may yet explain her true motivations; to erase the multiverse and replace it with something that reveres her, alleviating the chronic loneliness and isolation she has suffered through eternally, and the torment she may experience from existence just… being there, in spite of her.
When all is silent, and existence itself simply stops save for that which is like her, than she will be pleased, when all is Unicron.

Shifters and influence on the mental
Months ago I wrote something about memory inheritance intensity related to the moment of passing down powers, when chapter 93 was out. From that point, we’ve got further information about memory inheritance: members of the same family are more likely to see them than any common successor. Therefore, Marcel being Ymir’s predecessor could’ve helped a bit. The Coordinate being given to a Reiss/Fritz further suggests they would see the truth of the world. Doesn’t help Porco is the only case of interrupted chain we’ve seen (Galliard->Ymir->Galliard). Meanwhile, the Tyburs have been going on about it for generations, and as such, their memories are left intact. In fact, Willy narrating the Great War from his sister’s memories suggest it’s as efficient as the Founder and the Fritz family, further proving memory retention works for any family owning a titan power.
It’s also common for every shifter who received a power to wake up from a dream, experiencing temporary memory loss as a consequence: from Eren not remembering his last altercation with his father to Armin completely forgetting any events following the Colossus’ entrance. Hell, maybe that’s why the ceremony costume looks like a pajama.
That case of memory loss and temporary amnesia is experienced when shifters are transferring their conscience elsewhere (ie. Reiner forgetting the battle after storing himself in the Armored). Eren is also a particular case, considering his amnesic episodes happened well after he received the power. From sealing the night where his father died in his subconscious to him not remembering his rampage in Trost, or him hardening the Reiss Cave.
This is kinda long thanks to the Eren tangent, so bear with me, ok?
Looking further on Eren’s case, I still don’t get why he couldn’t tap in his father’s memories sooner. Maybe he tried to repress that night as his subconscious told him, because too much things happened at the same time: between the fall of Wall Maria, and his father telling him to avenge his mother with the power he gave him. After all, trying to think about Grisha sent Eren in a nightmare.
- Ch. 3
The only way he discovered his titan powers was when he was on the verge of death, saying the following:
“I- I won’t... give up... I’m gonna destroy them! Every last one... of those animals... that’s on this Earth... why my own hands...“
Now replace titans in this context by the world and you’ll see the new Eren is no different from the previous one. As expected, it’s the behavior held by the owners of the Attack Titan. When he came back to his senses, all he could mutter was “I’ll kill them all”, while still not remembering a thing. Indeed, the titan transformation was an unknown thing to him. A wound and a purpose. He started to do well after witnessing the death of his comrades and transform to fight.
The key to the basement - Ch. 10
Interestingly, while he was still figuring things out, his second, third and fourth transformation were partial in body and mind.
When Eren had to transform for a second time, he was recalling his father’s last orders, and how he had to control this power to “save Mikasa, Armin and everybody else”. Biting his hand instinctively, he generated a partial titan to block the cannon shots from the Garrison.
The third time, Eren formed a full titan with the purpose of plugging Wall Rose, internalizing the action as one of Humanity’s victory over the Advancing Titans. As his titan was fully formed, he still lost consciousness and attacked Mikasa out of pure instinct. He couldn’t remember it and he was stuck in a slumber in which he dreamed of a quaint life with his parents. He got the control back once he found his purpose again, which mentions “born in this world” and “venture in hell”, themes the current Eren use.
The fourth time was when he picked a spoon. Now that one isn’t quite well-explained, but you’ll notice Eren picked up a small, metallic, cylindric object with a flat extremity. Does that remind you of anything? That’s totally not the basement key, right?
Afterwards, Eren started to get a better hold of his titan powers. When he fought against Annie, he almost lost the control due to his murder impulse, even wanting to “eat” Annie (foreshadowing?). Still, none of that tapped accurately into his father’s memories, or every predecessor to both titan powers for that matter.
That is, until Hange ran experiments on him.
The longer Eren stays in his titan, the longer he puts himself to exhaustion. At some point he started writing “I don’t know how to harden myself” then “What my father did to me.” He experienced pain, a cloudy memory and a need to get out of his titan. At some point, during the successive shiftings, he started to eat the house he built (hungry for napes?), as if he was reverting to the state of a Pure Titan. Eren couldn’t remember how the experiments went. It looks like shifters can’t retain memories when they’re pushed to exhaustion either. When he was told about the experiments, he unlocked a memory fragment from Frieda. Is there a correlation between spending time as a titan and the likeliness to get a memory?
He later got help from Rod and Historia to unlock Grisha’s memories from that night, but Grisha started to flow in his mind for good after Eren went in his basement. As if reading the logs triggered something in him. These logs were written by Grisha himself, so seeing his narrative must’ve done the same effect to his memories than an amnesiac reading his own diary. Something that never happened to him before. If memory inheritance between family members was innate, as Gabi points it out, why couldn’t Eren catch a single glimpse of the outside world before going down Wall Maria, whereas the Warhammer had registered the memories from their Tybur ancestors?
Then we learn about how Karl Fritz influenced the mental of all his descendants by creating this vow of renouncing war. I supposed he used his powers to do it, though I’m not sure if it’s a Founder only thing. He forged a vow only his descendants will see and that vow had no effect on Eren when he got the Founder. Every Reiss who became the Founder before him got the truth of this world, and inherited Karl’s philosophy right away. What if Karl rearranged the memories to make their heir believe “We Eldians Are Evil”? After all, shifters entrusting their wishes to the next generation works.
Kruger’s last orders - Ch. 89
And Grisha carried this vow till the end. The Attack Titan is a special case. From what we’ve learned, its power isn’t explicitly detailed, except it being a “titan marching for freedom”. Willy’s speech seems to further confirm what I’ve been suspecting for a while: how come Marley owns 7 powers out of the nine and only the Founder retreated to Paradis? What happened to the Attack Titan? Did it vanish after the war because their previous owner was killed? Does it have any specific powers? How come Eren couldn’t have flashes of his father’s youth between 845 and 850?
One explanation could be due to some unknown Attack Titan users placing some psyche locks on him to prevent him from going further. The same way Karl Fritz would forge a vow he would pass to his descendants, some user must’ve done the same to anybody thriving for freedom. That would explain why both Kruger and Grisha said the flowing before passing their titans on:
Unknown memories - Ch. 89
Those names look a bit too specific. One might suspect these are the memories of Eren Yeager himself, as Mikasa and Armin are his friends. There’s the famous theory of the user being Eren himself, sending messages from the future, as his impending doom approaches. Kruger explained the paths had no space or time boundaries. Eren sending his younger-self premonitions is in the realm of the possibility. That would explain why Eren couldn’t reach the truth by the memory inheritance way. This flashback in particular can be either interpreted as motivation... or a warning.
Is this supposed to awake Eren’s quench and rage for freedom or discourage him from it? - Ch. 89
At this point, it’s debatable. Since it’s from Kruger’s standpoint, it looks like a message to say “Our brothers and sisters paid the price for it. Move forward for us. These actions will follow you until they’re repaid.”. I’ve noticed once Eren was in control of Grisha and Kruger’s memories, he had a full access to Frieda’s dialogue, whereas the previous contact between him and Historia, with Rod’s help, made him seen a partial version of it.
If that’s the case, then where does it fit?
To you, 2,000 years from now - Ch. 1
The girl clearly looks like Mikasa and Eren hasn’t even got his titan powers yet. Why is this image, being the first one we see from Eren’s perspective, so spontaneous? The actual Mikasa has much shorter hair, so I assume this one occurred before Eren and Mikasa reunited in Liberio. Besides, what’s behind? Grass? Wave ripples? The intensity was as such as it made Eren cry... Between that and Grisha and Kruger’s last words, that proves that messages from the future are possible...
Yet Mikasa and Armin are names, like Eren’s is. If that’s the case, these people could’ve been homonyms of Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert. Therefore making this last vow a prophecy for the true holder of the power of Satan (Attack) and God (Founder). Grisha made himself a fame quickly in Shiganshina. So perhaps he influenced Mikasa and Armin’s parents. Who knows...
So if predecessors hold some influence over their successors, what does that mean?
As far as I remember, it’s the first time we’ve seen the ghost of a titan showing up, did we? Did Bertolt, in his last moments, did something before being eaten by Armin?Looks like an apparition. Memories are preserved for Armin, but he witnessed a ghost. If vows aren’t proper to the Founder only, that means anybody holding a titan power can do some mental trick on their successors. So far Armin looks healthy, but who knows. Eren’s protections got removed after activating his titan powers, Bertolt might’ve possessed Armin in a more subtle way, etc, etc...
The other thing relevant from Eren’s tentatives are him using instinct while not fully aware of his surroundings. Like attacking Mikasa or him going on a rampage. Shifters have the ability to separate their self from the rest of their body, the most recent example being sister Tybur, while staying aware of her surroundings. Reiner did the same when he transferred his consciousness in his titan body. He was no longer conscious but still heard Bertolt’s words.
Reiner’s memory fragment - Ch. 82
Further proof the ones owning the power of the titans can pilot their titan while being driven by instinct. At this point, the boundary between pure titans and the 9 titans becomes moot. What if you lose a titan power by exhausting yourself through staying in a titan shape?
Anyway, I got on a huge tangent when it comes to Eren due to him looking like the exception rather than the norm. Due to the existence of paths, it rather feels like owning a titan power is more than just a spirit placed in a giant’s body.

What is a Hero? A One-Punch Man Analysis
I’ve made no secret of my respect for One-Punch Man and its fairly recent but profound fixture in the cluttered world of modern anime. This senin send up to the shonen superhero genre - born from the unsteady hands of creator ONE as a webcomic nearly a decade ago - initially appeared as nothing more than a poorly drawn gag manga, and even its most stalwart fans often balk at providing a detailed explanation on why it got so big, so fast. What is it about this bland, bald protagonist in a goofy costume and his zany cast mates that strikes such a chord with so many people - some who’d be the last to call themselves anime fans?
Of course, there’s the obvious draw of a new massively powerful, near-invincible character fans can add to their roster of titans - a cudgel with which to play out their vicarious power fantasies. There’s no end of the toxic hate flung about the Internet whenever someone innocently (or not) asks, “Who would win in a fight between Saitama and [X]?” - with “X” being anyone from Goku, to Superman, to God himself. While amusing in a train wreck sort of way, these pissing contests don't help us understand the wider appeal of the series - and in either case miss the point entirely. One-Punch Man has been called everything from a gag series to deconstructive satire - usually by people with little understanding of what these terms really mean.
In fact, One-Punch Man nimbly straddles quite a number of genre lines - partly because ONE didn’t have a solid sense of direction after his crudely drawn webcomic found a bigger audience than he anticipated. But the series rides on thanks to his skills as a storyteller, particularly where he manages to maintain a compelling story arc without losing sight of the absurdity of his premise - letting his fans in on an extended joke even as he (seemingly) plays typical shonen conventions straight at times.
The crucial figure in this tightrope dance is Saitama himself, and ONE expertly uses him to pivot the fraught nexus of literary deconstruction and reconstruction: the dismantling of literary archetypes by exploiting the real-world implications and consequences of their outlandishness; and the more difficult task of rebuilding them into something a bit more solid and more resilient to both past and future critiques.
A Hero Shall Lead Them...
A good place to start is with the the idea of the shonen hero and what he represents. In these series the main protagonist is usually the central focus. True, he (and it's almost always a he) may get eclipsed every once and awhile by another character due to creator preferences or fandom response, but it's still his actions driving the plot, and his growth keeping our butts in the seat. To accomplish this and keep our interest, it’s usually necessary to endow him with some standout feature: good looks, a sad backstory, a drive towards an impossible dream, or just plain, simple badassery.
...Or not
Saitama’s got precious little of any of that. On the surface, he’s a vanilla, rather boring protagonist - dull, plain-looking, and lacking any semblance of motivation or ambition besides “having a good fight.” He doesn’t have a particularly tragic backstory, or any other issue that isn’t, in some way, of his own making. He even falls a bit short in the “badass” department, since unquestionable power and ability aside, he’s too low-key and lazily efficient to capture the attention of his in-universe protectorate. Despite his phenomenal powers and obscene strength, despite his status as the main character, there’s nothing about Saitama that really stands out - at least, not in the way most audiences expect from a shonen hero. He defies our assumptions about what a hero is supposed to look and act like. But what makes this a brilliant twist instead of a recipe for tedium is the reason why Saitama obtained his unbelievable power. No mutant bite, no phenomenal superpowered lineage; he's just a guy who trained so hard that he accidentally became the strongest being in the known universe. If you think that sounds utterly ridiculous, well, you’re right - and you’re not alone; several characters in story aren't drinking his Kool-Aid, either. But the consequences of his current state is where the real fun lies. Saitama paints the picture of the quintessential shonen hero during his training - striving to be the strongest, pushing his body to the limits, and stopping at nothing to fulfill his goal. And guess what? He succeeds. The boring battles, easy victories, and existential ennui that defines and constrains Saitama is merely the end result of what happens when our shonen heroes take “wanting to be the best” to the logical conclusion. Saitama woke up one day and found that he really was the strongest guy around - and without the convenient serial escalation of threats that’s such a hallmark of every other series of this kind, he can do nothing but mourn the lack of any challenge to his unwanted supremacy.
Heroes, Inc.
Saitama’s blandness stands out all the more because he is surrounded by so many colorful characters who to varying degrees of sincerity strive to reach the pinnacle of heroic gestalt. Unfortunately, that amounts to all of jack squat in this world. Heroism is less a service to mankind or a motivator to help the helpless than a stepping stone to stardom, a way to blow off steam, or just a simple paycheck in the mail. The Hero Association who employs most of these “heroes” is a shady and slightly corrupt organization, warping the concept of heroism into some bastard offspring of a numbers game and a popularity contest. Many of the Association's cronies are apathetic to all but their names headlining the front page news, and even those who shun the limelight tend not to hold heroism in the most ideal light. Genos, our hero’s faithful cyborg Number Two, is a perfect example of this, especially in the beginning: the call to heroism had little appeal to the intense, vengeful youth, and even after joining the Association, he cares nothing for the hero culture it brands and advertises. Not that you can blame him; One-Punch Man lifts the veil on what happens when heroism becomes a commodity - much like My Hero Academia at times, but with neither that show’s affirming narrative of striving for your dreams, nor its generally upbeat framing of heroic actions through the eyes of idealistic youths.
The Breakdown of the Ideal Hero
All of the above combine to drive home the deconstructive aspect of the series. In the One-Punch universe, heroism is a public relations racket, meant to boost your social capital or that of the association who hires you. Those few who sincerely wish only to save other people often find themselves overwhelmed by powerful foes and unappreciated by an ungrateful populace. And when Saitama - a genuine powerhouse who, despite his laziness, does believe in the call to protect and serve - shows up and makes everything look so damn easy, both his fellow heroes and the people they watch over have a hard time believing he’s anything but a fraud.
At play here, then, is a fracturing of two of the most dearly-held beliefs of the shonen superhero genre: that pursuing power with single-minded focus - even if for the right reasons - will somehow make your life easier or better, and that being a hero is a noble calling that carries its own rewards. The following example shows just how ruthlessly One-Punch Man can grind down the above “logic” over the course of its run.
Case study: The Deep Sea King
The Deep Sea King Arc (for anime viewers, episodes 9 -10) is a narrative turning point in what had been up to that point a largely episodic gag fest. Besides giving us the series’ first persistent threat to actually cause a significant degree of damage to both the image of the Hero Association and the heroes themselves, this arc also established several trends that come back to wallop the shonen enterprise at many points during the show’s run. For one, we have the introduction and development of multiple heroes, each given a chance to shine and show how deadly they would be if they were up against any normal foe. Stinger, Lightning Max, Snake Fist Snek: all members of the Hero Association’s Class A, the second strongest; all laying out their well-earned hero cred, either here or in previous episodes. And all fall to the Deep Sea King with little or no effort. It only escalates from there: Speed-o'-Sound Sonic, One-Punch Man’s resident ninja and self-proclaimed rival to Saitama, fails to inflict any lasting damage on the brute. As does Puri Puri Prisoner, the first S-Class (the best of the best in the Association) we see in action besides Genos, despite a rather impressive showing. Even Genos himself gives a strong if futile effort against the evil beast, accustomed as he is to getting ragdolled in order to make the monster of the week look more dangerous before Saitama fists it to oblivion.
So far, this all still follows the standard shonen patterns: evil enemy appears, carves a bloody swath through a line of lesser heroes, and eventually stumbles into a final showdown with our protagonist. Even so, One-Punch Man still has time to play with a few genre archetypes along the way to varying degrees of faithfulness: the power of teamwork, which fails miserably; the heroic transformation sequence, which only serves to show a side of Puri Puri Prisoner most of us definitely did not want to see; and even the infamous “nakarma power up,” during which resident low-ranked muggle hero Licenseless Rider gains a second wind in his hopeless battle against the Deep Sea King because the crowd he’s protecting all rallied behind him...which does absolutely nothing to change the outcome in any way. It's at this point - with all the shonen-trope fish riddled with bullets at the bottom of the barrel - that Saitama finally steps in, annoyed and ready to throw down with the king.
By now, most fans probably know the deal - but those few who miraculously missed the memo on what this series is all about might be expecting a decent fight for once. And were this any other series, they’d have every right to. Years of shonen narrative archetypes have conditioned us to expect a fight in these circumstances- maybe one-sided, maybe back- and-forth, but still, a fight. What we get was the usual half-assed, one punch victory; Saitama drops him like an afterthought, just like every other baddie on the show. But it is the crowd’s reaction and what follows that really twists the deconstructive knife. Saitama’s hilariously effortless dispatching of the Deep Sea King is par for the course for him, but completely throws his spectators for a loop- so much so that one particular ingrate uses it to argue against the efficacy of the Hero Association and heroes in general.
For most fans, this venom-spewing cretin should be burned in effigy. But his arguments, on closer inspection, don't deviate much from the tirades shonen fans often level at “weak” characters in many franchises. He questions the strength and usefulness of heroes and the hero ranking since a low-ranked nobody like Saitama can come along and end it in a single punch. Truth be told, he does have a point about the rankings' unreliability, but when he equates strength with heroism, thus casting all the heroes who risked everything to keep him and his fellow citizens safe into the proverbial waste bin, he’s not saying anything out of the ordinary for fandoms like Dragonball or One Piece, where “weak” characters are often the butts of many jokes for the sin of not being in the top power tier.
What's at heart here is the very nature of heroism itself, and who gets to define it. Our obnoxious jerk lays out his own understanding: “Anyone can buy a little time, but a hero has to beat monsters.” With that, the heckler shows his shared lineage with those who lust after the violent anti-hero archetype - the ones, like Saitama in the beginning, who are motivated more by the thrill of a good fight than a desire to save people. These are the heroes who stop at nothing to “beat the bad guy” - collateral damage, protecting innocents, or a sense of higher purpose driving their actions be damned. These are the heroes who own a dominant share of the current shonen market and who power the 90s Anti-hero trope so well known in Western comics. These heroes, and their fans, hold “badassery” as the most important and defining trait a hero can have, giving lift to the most reprehensible personal and moral views so long as they have what it takes to annihilate the enemy and confer bragging rights to their vicarious backers.
Tear Down, Build Up
There are many other instances like this all throughout ONE’s webcomic and especially the fabulous redrawn manga made in collaboration with the great Yusuke Murata. Teamwork among these heroes is seen not only to fail, but to be fundamentally flawed when weighed against the egos and relative powerlessness of the parties involved. The Hero Association gets rattled a few more times over the course of the series - each time revealing an even more unsavory underbelly in the process. Perhaps the darkest manifestation of One-Punch Man’s deconstructive digs is Handsomely Masked Sweet Mask, the Association’s top A-Class and unofficial gatekeeper to the coveted Class S. Popular, charming, and incredibly handsome, Sweet Mask harbors an almost sociopathic degree of black and white thinking. His main quirk - aside from badgering other heroes for not living up to his ideals of “perfection” - is his relentless desire to vanquish “evil,” however he sees it. This isn’t new, of course; hero teams across genres and cultures often have at least one moral monster to wreak havoc with the series' karmic tilt. But ONE keeps true to his ironic bent by showing how flat-out insane it looks from the outside to idolize someone like that. Sweet Mask will disregard orders to bring a target in alive, threaten other heroes and even children who dare interfere with his directives, and all the while his fans cheer him on because hey, he looks so damn good doing it. This creep's in-universe fandom love him for all the most shallow reasons, and though most of us in real life are thoroughly repulsed by him (if the tremendous amounts of hate he gets across the Internet is anything to go by) Sweet Mask slyly reveals the many illogical ways we justify flocking to characters that intrigue us superficially, even as we’d find their behavior under any other circumstance - or even if enacted by a less attractive or "cool" character - repugnant.
One-Punch Man, far from being a simple gag series, runs quite a few deconstructive currents under the smooth surface of in-jokes and silliness. Sure, it’s no Voltaire or Jonathan Swift, but ONE’s crafting has more than a little method behind the madness. Indeed, you might be forgiven for assuming that the series is primarily satire - a brutal poke at the superhero premise specifically and anime archetypes generally. But there’s another side to the story; just as the little creep in the Deep Sea King Arc made his case of what a hero is supposed to be, Saitama himself had his own answer. And we’ll examine that in depth in the next part, along with the slew of other gems ONE throws in to veer his series away from simply demolishing fictional heroism’s house of card and towards rebuilding it in (partial) glory.

How would Batman cover up Robin's and Jason Todd's death, making sure no one connected the two as the same person.
How would Batman cover up Robin’s and Jason Todd’s death, making sure no one connected the two as the same person.
This is a question that’s bothered me for a long time and I think I’ve figured out how. Bruce could make a fake news headline stating that, “Robin, the Boy Wonder Dies Trying to Save Bruce Wayne’s Ward, Jason Todd”.
It could be written more gracefully but you get the idea. Bruce owns the daily planet so he can basically publish whatever he wants.
Right after Jason’s death, the Joker gains diplomatic immunity and Superman is sent to prevent Batman from beating him to an inch within his life. I want this incident to put a huge rift between Bruce and Clark, metaphorically putting an end to “The World’s Finest”. Once they considered themselves the best of friends and now Bruce coldly refers to their relationship as long-term acquaintances. No more jokes or teasing between the two. Batman tries to finish the mission as quickly as possible and the moment he’s done, he disappears. If there are other people, he divides the group so that he’s with someone else and Clark is in the opposite direction. Bruce also dodges Clark all the time to the point where Clark gives up after trying so hard for so long. As opposed to in the past where he usually lingers a little to make small talk before slipping away.
I also imagine that Lois has just given birth to Jon. I’m not a mother but I’m sure that the birth of a first child is magical. And because of that she has become somewhat soft hearted. Which gives Bruce the leverage he needs to convince/persuade/emotionally blackmails Lois into writing the article about Jason and Robin even though she is a strict believer in finding and only reporting the Truth.
Bruce kind of convinces her by guilting her of what she would feel like if she lost her son and by pressuring her of possible consequences of ppl linking Robin to Jason and him to Batman. He may also tell her/make up a story about how the Justice League is in full swing only because “he, Bruce” the “human” is there to control these God-like creatures. And because he has no powers and can still take down the Justice League, that is why the American Government lets the League function. He can also say that he bribes many ppl on the inside of the government to look the other way regarding superman as he has singlehandedly produced enough damage as Hurricane Katrina because of his powers. (Okay that may or may not be an exaggeration but you get my point)
The reason Bruce asks her to write the article is because Lois is a “famous” news reporter and is thus “trustworthy” so if Bruce can get the story published under her name, no one would really ask any questions.
Batman also has a camera recording everything that goes on when he puts on the cowl so he could choose many images to forge the cover picture for the article. Since he made it a point to master multiple technologies to hack into systems and to keep his identity safe, I imagine he also mastered image manipulation and that he begrudgingly uses them to forge an appropriate image for the “occasion”.
This incident not only distances Bruce from Clark, but also the rest of his friends from the League which is why none of them are there for Jason’s funeral, as in he didn’t or Alfred didn’t invite them.
The funeral is obviously private because Bruce doesn’t want to deal with the media right now. The attendees are Bruce, Alfred, Barbara(Oracle), Commissioner Gordon, Lucius Fox (and his son Luke maybe?), Leslie Thompson, maybe Selina, AND DICK GRAYSON DAMNIT.
WHY THE HELL WAS HE NOT INFORMED OF JASON’S DEATH?!?! ALFRED SHOULD HAVE CONTACTED HIM FIRST LIKE YOUR YOUNGER SON JUST DIED SO YOU SHOULD HAVE THE DECENCY TO TELL YOUR OLDER SON. THIS NEVER FAILS TO ANNOY ME. IM JUST GONNA WRITE THIS OFF AS A MISTAKE ON DC’S PART BECAUSE THEY LIKE MAN PAIN AND DECIDED THEY WERE GONNA PUT MORE ANGST FOR BOTH BRUCE AND DICK.
The members of the Justice League, and some from the Young Justice team come visit a few at a time to check up on Bruce but Bruce is locked up in his or Jason’s room so Alfred attends to them.
I feel like Conner from the Young Justice TV show (the introvert softy but with rage issues) would have been able to relate to Jason the most because they were both kind of “replacements for the originals”. Conner being a replacement for Clark and Jason being a replacement for Dick. Although the latter isn’t completely true, many of Dick’s team mates (Teen Titans I mean here. The Young Justice team dealt with clones of Superman and Roy Harper and Artemis “replacing” Roy as the archer in the team- this team didn’t mind too much so Jason got along with them better) probably felt that way and didn’t warm up to Jason too quickly and kind of gave him dirty looks when Dick wasn’t looking. By the time they realized their mistake, Jason would have passed away. Conner losing someone for the first time and trying to act fine but then breaks down in his room privately because he doesn’t want to be seen.
I feel like Jason and Conner would be good friends. Like, Conner is the quiet type and Jason I think is considered an extrovert. And because Jason is Nightwing’s “little bro” Conner decides to humor him and listen to what he’s saying. Jason had high grades in school(his grade average was like a 94%. Even his teacher thought he needed to chill. Lol when you’re so op everybody is jealous) and I think he was super into reading. So because he would read a lot, he was exposed to different lines of thinking and he shared those open minded ideas with Conner because Conner actively listened but also because Conner was too afraid of offending Jason and in turn rubbing Dick the wrong way, so he always listened, nodding and answering when necessary. Pretty soon he found himself talking and debating with Jason and reading the things that Jason recommended.
This is what got Conner to unfortunately break up with Megan (m'gann??). Because Conner was exposed to these ideas that Lobotomy was wrong and that all people have certain rights, even though they may be trash, inequality, violence, rape??(Jason ran into a few incidents with rape victims during his run as Robin so maybe he vented to Conner instead of Bruce because of Bruce’s no kill rule and Bruce can sometimes be a brick wall), laws, psychology, philosophy, etc.
This is what got Conner thinking about what Megan was doing and confronting her about it. Then being strong enough to break up with the person he was the most closest to and had been with him his whole life because he knew what she was doing was wrong and was strong enough not to ignore it.
I feel like this says a lot about him and it would develop his character. Because at the very beginning, he was this guy with rage issues who didn’t like to listen to people. Then, once his rage issues slowly decreasing, he obediently follows orders or suggestions(or politely declines??? Season 2 his birthday he declines going out with that other chick??? I don’t remember am I just making things up??) and becomes much more easy to approach and nicer. Lessening his ego to ask Canary to teach him how to fight properly and later happily sparring with Aqualad in season 1.
Near the middle of season 2 he has “the talk” with Megan (but his break up was during the time skip…he still took suggestion and orders seriously tho like how he should read previous reports of missions to increase his general and battle field knowledge) which shows that despite being obedient to his what the league tells him and to his peers who have lived much longer than him and generally know what’s best, he can still think on his own and isn’t a “yes-man” to everybody.
I also feel like Megan and Conner getting back together destroyed the whole character development in a sense because when people recall their relationship, they will probably glaze over why they broke up in the first place. Usually saying things like, “oh yeah and they broke up for two seconds and got back together again”.
Even though at the beginning I was all for the two to be together, I think it was good that they showed an actual break up because that happens in life. You can both love each other with all your hearts and still not be “meant to be”.
I didn’t like how quickly Megan got with Lagoon boy but honestly I’m glad because then I wouldn’t have to barf through them flirty and finally getting together so I kind of appreciate it in a sense. Doesn’t mean I like it, but still.
And although I don’t like Lagoon boy either, I was hoping that he would stay together with Megan. I didn’t like that she broke it off. Even though Conner may have been right about the “rebound guy” part, that didn’t mean she had to break it off. It would have been nice to see her have a healthy relationship after a break up. That’s something that’s kind of rare in most tv dramas. Or maybe I just wanted to have a sure fire way to make sure Conner and Megan didn’t get back together again.
I would also like to commend Megan for acknowledging her mistakes and apologizing to Conner for it. (Although it took jacking up and fixing Aqualad’s brains to do it. )
Well this post went in a completely different direction then what I expected. So this is what a 180 looks like. I have no regrets. These are my headcannons. This is my life and these are my choices. I bet like no one is gonna read this because it is so long…… I’m sorry. I don’t know how to do the thing with the read more button and it cuts off a fourth in.

Gift of freedom: how Obama’s clemency drive tackled aftermath of ‘war on drugs’
Ramona Brant is one of 1,324 people serving long terms for relatively minor drug crimes to be freed by the president but his successor is unlikely to follow suit
Last April, two months after Ramona Brant walked free from prison having served 21 years of a life sentence for a first-time non-violent drug offense, she found herself outside the Busboys and Poets restaurant in Washington as a convoy of limousines drew up. A tall black man got out of the central vehicle and greeted her with the immortal words: Hey Ramona, come on, Im taking you to lunch.
I was no good, I couldnt think, Brant recalls. This is the person who used his executive power to say Enough is enough, you can go home now. Then he invites me to lunch. I couldnt believe this.
By the end of lunch, Brant had composed herself sufficiently to make Obama a heartfelt promise. She told him that she would not allow his name to be tainted by anything she did that would send her back to prison.
I will honor you with my freedom, she said. And that is what I have done.
Brant is one of 1,324 women and men who will honor Obama with their freedom long after he vacates the White House in less than three weeks time. Most of them, like her, were serving long prison sentences 395 of them for life for relatively minor drug crimes imposed during the so-called war on drugs.
Brants case was particularly brutal. She had no history of drug dealing when in 1994 she was arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine valued by the prosecution at $37m. I have never sold drugs at all in my life. Never once.
Yet through association with her violent and abusive boyfriend, who forced her to accompany him when he went on interstate drug runs by beating her and threatening to kill members of her family, she was accused of personally trafficking large amounts of crack cocaine and powder cocaine quantities she says were entirely fictitious.
Those amounts never existed, there was nothing there. They were based on what my co-defendants traded among themselves, and all of that was lumped together and I was held responsible for it.
Even the trial judge as he sentenced her to remain behind bars for the rest of her natural life complained that putting her away forever made no sense. But his hands were tied the sentence was mandatory.
Her former boyfriend remains in prison on a life sentence.
Obama cited Brants case in the long article he wrote last week for the Harvard Law Review looking back on his impact on criminal justice reform. Ramonas case is in many ways emblematic of the problems with overly harsh mandatory sentences in the federal system, he said.
Brant says that she kept her spirits up over 21 long years in the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, by placing her trust in God. Her prayers were answered last December when she received a letter from Obama saying that he believed in her and was giving her a second chance by commuting her sentence.
To see the letter, and his signature! I just sat there reading it over and over, it was surreal.

Multiply that overwhelming joy by 1,324 and you start to get a sense of the human scale of Obamas clemency project. In any future assessment of his legacy, his flinging open of the prison gates to so many victims of the drug war is certain to loom large.
What hes done has been unprecedented, said Kara Gotsch of the Sentencing Project. These people were the victims of policies that trapped them in the criminal justice system for low-level drug offenses these werent the drug kingpins.
One of the strengths of Obamas clemency drive is its power to act as a model for individual states that are responsible for the incarceration of the overwhelming majority of prisoners in America. While there are about 190,000 people held in the federal penal system almost half of them for drug offenses there are close to 2 million under state lock and key.
President Obama has tried to set an example on the national stage, and that is critically important in shifting the needle on what is fair and proportionate. The whole country is looking at this, Gotsch said.
Obamas embrace of commutations comes at the end of a singularly frustrating period for criminal justice reform. A year ago there were high hopes that a bipartisan coalition of forces, from the rightwing Koch brothers to the ACLU, would effect legislative change that would bring freedom to thousands of largely black Americans caught up in the harsh mandatory sentencing of the drug war.
When those hopes were dashed on the rock of Republican intransigence in the House of Representatives, Obama turned to his presidential power to grant clemency without the need for congressional approval. It would be comparatively slight compared with the initial ambition to overhaul the entire justice system, but it would be something.
This is his last shout to try and bring relief to as many people as possible, Gotsch said.
It has certainly come late in the day for the Obama presidency. Until he announced the clemency project in 2014, Obama displayed scant interest in this area indeed during the whole of his first term he granted pardons or commutations to only 23 people.
As recently as last March criminal justice experts were lamenting in the Washington Post that his record on pardons where individuals have their legal liabilities erased as opposed to commutations where their convictions still stand was so poor that Obama could go down as one of the most merciless presidents in history. It was only in 2016 that his drive for clemency really picked up speed, with 1,171 of the 1,324 lucky recipients gaining their freedom in the course of last year alone.
Obamas sudden burst of activity rocketed him from being a no-show on the clemency league table to being a titan among postwar presidents. Many of the reports on his late conversion to commuting and pardoning prisoners have noted that he has wielded his clemency power more times than the previous 11 presidents combined.
That characterization is misleading. Mark Osler, a law professor at the University of St Thomas who set up the first clemency legal clinic in the country, points out that Obama holds such a distinction only if you discount the clemency record of Gerald Ford.
In 1974, the Republican president granted clemency to 14,000 draft dodgers and deserters of the Vietnam war. That was a brave move, Osler contends, given that at the time draft dodgers were as popular as crack dealers are today.
Ford achieved his massive clemency rate by setting up a lean bipartisan operation that could push petitions through with minimum bureaucracy. By contrast, Osler criticizes the Obama clemency project for operating a system of review that is so cumbersome it has gummed up the process.
The professor lists seven consecutive hurdles, spanning four federal buildings, that any prisoner must negotiate to have her or his petition granted: The petition goes from a staff person at the pardon attorneys office to the pardon attorney, then it goes to a staff person at the deputy attorney generals office to the deputy attorney general, then to the staff at the White House counsels office then to the White House counsel, and finally to the president. And people are surprised that the results are so uneven.
As a lawyer who has represented more than 60 petitioners, Osler is keenly aware of the impact of Obamas efforts. For the 1,324 beneficiaries, he said, this was an incredible act of grace. The restoration to society matters, not just to them but to their families and communities.
But he is also keenly aware that the vast majority of more than 30,000 prisoners who have petitioned the president have been denied clemency or are still waiting for an answer. The problem is, I feel like the person after the shipwreck in the lifeboat seeing all the other people in the water.
Ramona Brant knows that feeling all too intimately. Many of her fellow prisoners she calls them her sisters are still incarcerated. There are still too many of my sisters left behind, she says.
Hopes for those people are fading with every day. President-elect Donald Trumps choice for US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, has been scathing of Obamas clemency project, denouncing it as an abuse of executive power. The chances of the Trump administration continuing to push for release of low-level drug offenders is slim to none.
Ramona Brant with her two sons, now grown up. Photograph: Brant family
As a way of doing her bit to keep the flame alive, Brant has spent much of the past year since she was released last February traveling the country speaking about the dual scourges of domestic violence and mass incarceration. She uses the power of her personal story to try to influence change.
I didnt just study criminal justice, I lived it. This has been my life and that of so many other women. The system is structured to incarcerate people, black women like me.
Brant, who was a mother of two young sons by her co-defendant and former boyfriend when she was arrested, thinks back on all the precious moments she missed over 21 years in a cell. I missed an opportunity to be a mother to my own children, to watch the first tooth come out, to take them to the first day of school; I wasnt by my fathers side when he died, or there when my mom was put to rest; I missed my first two grandchildren being born. No matter how many pictures you have on your wall they cannot replace the images in your mind, and I have no images.
She was there four months ago, however, at the birth of her third grandchild. She has begun to fill up the void.
She thanks Obama for that. He has given me an amazing gift, and I wish there was a way to express my gratitude. He knows he gave me a second chance, but I dont think he knows the depth of what it really means to be free.

In Ottoman Turkish, Urdu and Malay, its name is 'Zuhal', derived from Arabic.
