“I need a double shot espresso and a strawberry refresher,” you call to your coworkers. You’re working the register when a tall man walks up to the counter. Man, he is super cute. “Hi, what can I get for you?”
“I don’t come here often but I hear you don’t take large cups? What are they called?”
“Venti?”
“Yeah, that,” he chuckles. “What do you recommend?”
“I personally love anything caramel. It gives me enough sugar to counteract the bitterness of the coffee.”
“I’ll do that, then.”
Man, he is clueless but he’s so cute. You’re not sure if this is a bit or if this is who he actually is but you like it.
“What kind of coffee do you want?”
“Hazelnut Americano with caramel drizzle.”
“You got it. Anything else?”
“No.”
“Name?”
“Spencer Reid.”
He pays for his coffee and you start making his order since there is no one else in line. You write his name on the cup and walk to the pickup section and call his name. The way he bounces over to the counter is kind of cute.
“Have a nice day, Spencer,” you grin and hand it to him.
“Thank you. You, too!”
The next day when Spencer comes in, he is more confident. He’s still nervous since he finds you attractive but he’s not going to let that stop him.
“Hey, I remember you. You ordered the hazelnut Americano yesterday,” you smile and greet him. You yawn and cover your mouth. “Sorry. It doesn’t matter how much coffee I drink, I am still tired.”
“Did you know that coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goat herder?”
“I did not but it makes sense. He needed all that energy to round up all the goats. What’s your name again?”
“Spencer.”
“Yes, that was it. Sorry, I have a terrible memory.”
“I have an eidetic one.”
“What is that?”
“An eidetic memory is the ability to recall an image from memory with high precision—at least for a brief period—after seeing it only once and without using a mnemonic device. I have an IQ of 187 and can read twenty-thousand words a minute.”
“So, you’re really smart?”
“Yes,” he chuckles.
“Okay, come back tomorrow and I’ll have a fact for you.”
“Deal.”
There is a line forming behind him so Spencer quickly orders and leaves just as fast as he came. You have to wait an entire day to see him again and this time, you have a fact lined up for him.
“Hi, Spencer,” you smile. “I think I got a good fact for you today.”
“Let’s hear it.”
“Did you know that ketchup was once sold as a medicine?”
“In the 1830s, it was believed that the condiment could cure almost anything, including indigestion, diarrhea, and even jaundice,” he nods.
“Alright, smarty-pants, I’ll have to try harder tomorrow.”
“I have one for you about coffee. Did you know that bees love the taste of coffee?”
“Is that why they always fly near me when I’m having my morning coffee in my sunroom?”
“It might be.”
Another line is forming so you grab his coffee order and move on with your life. The only thing you’re looking forward to now is Spencer when he comes in. He shows up the next morning at the same time he’s been showing up, and you find yourself smiling because of him.
“Spencer! The usual?”
“Actually, get me your favorite drink.”
“Are you sure? You’re not allergic to anything?”
“Nope.”
“Coming right up.” You ring him up and accept his cash. “I have another fact, and I think it’s a good one. Did you know the Vikings discovered America and not Christopher Columbus?”
“Yes, approximately five hundred years before Christopher Columbus, the Scandinavian explorer Thorvald, brother of Leif Erikson and son of Erik the Red, died in battle in modern-day Newfoundland.”
“Okay, you’re good.”
Spencer blushes at your small compliment. “My head is filled with facts that I can’t seem to forget like coffee beans are actually the seeds from the coffee plant’s berry-like fruits. The coffee plant is a shrub that grows in tropical climates in parts of Africa, Asia, South America and North America. It produces an edible berry-like fruit known as a coffee cherry, which typically contains two coffee beans. These beans are then processed and roasted to create the coffee we know and love.”
“I did not know that.” You really like talking to him but every time he comes in, there is a line forming behind him. You have to move on so you put in his order. You turn to your coworker who barely begins to make his order. “Can you take this? I want to make his cup.”
“Sure, smitten kitten,” she grins.
You grab the empty cup and make your favorite drink for Spencer. When you’re done, you write your number on the side of it in hopes he will use it.
“Spencer?” He walks up to the counter and you smile. “Here you go.”
“Thank you. I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“I’ll be here.”
Spencer doesn’t notice your number until he gets to his car. He smiles which makes you smile because that is a good sign that he likes what you did. The next day, he comes in with someone. He hasn’t used your number yet but maybe he’s nervous. The man with the dark skin encourages Spencer to make a move on you, and he pushes him toward you.
“Hi, Spencer,” you smile.
“Hi. This is my friend and coworker, Derek Morgan.”
“Hi, Derek.” You turn to Spencer. “I got one for you. I really think I’ll get you this time. Did you know that in Ancient Egypt, the New Year celebration was called Wepet Renpet?”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Wait, really?” you gasp.
“Are you serious?” Derek asks Spencer at the same time as you.
“I’m sorry, yeah, I did.” You tip your head back and laugh. “While we celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1, the Ancient Egyptian tradition was different every year. Meaning ‘the opener of the year’, Wepet Renpet was a way to mark the annual flooding of the Nile River, which usually happened sometime in July. The Egyptians tracked Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, to time their festivities.”
“You know, one day, I’m gonna get you. I’m gonna know something you don’t.”
“I’ve been barking up that tree for years now,” Derek chuckles. You and Spencer look at him and he nods in understanding. “I’ll go wait over there.”
“What can I get you two?”
“Caramel Macchiato and a Hazelnut Americano.”
“Is that all?”
Spencer looks at Derek who nods in encouragement.
“Would you like to go on a date with me?” he stutters.
He blushes as he talks which is super cute.
“I’d love to.”
“Great. I still have your number. I was nervous about using it but I will now.”
“Don’t wait too long,” you grin.
There is something pulling you and Spencer together, something of an invisible string.

I feel helpless ! My children suffer from hepatitis “jaundice”… Anyone who is familiar with this viral disease knows that “diet” is the cure for it. Like any mother who takes excessive care of her children during illness, I have been shackled by incapacity and scarcity, and I cannot find anything to care for them! No dates, no honey, no fruits, no vegetables. Everything here is organic, manufactured and canned. However, there is no laboratory to be examined in, nor a pediatrician to tell you what to do. If it were not for God and the presence of my father, a medical veteran, to guide me, I would have died of extreme disability. We have nothing to heal except water, prayers for healing, and morning and evening fortifications. Our small wars in this great war are too big for a mother who lost her husband to bear!

what sort of things might a clan cat take for morning sickness? i'm trying to do my own research but all the plants i'm finding that are used for folk remedies to deal with nausea either don't grow anywhere near where i need them or are probably dangerous for pregnant people!
Unfortunately you're not finding anything because there really isn't a good treatment for morning sickness, known scientifically as NVP-- Nausea/Vomiting of Pregnancy. Just folk remedies, which could work decently as a placebo.
Even its cause is unknown. There's a theory that it's supposed to discourage the carrier from eating anything that might harm the fetus during the most sensitive early periods. You don't want to take a risk on eating anything WEIRD when your stomach is extra sensitive, makes sense. There's some evidence that ties it to fluctuations in reproductive hormones, too. But we're still kinda unsure about it.
So my prescription is for your Clan to choose an herb that doesn't actually do anything (I'd suggest dandelions or maybe wild carrots, something with some vitamins) and put that into a bone broth. Something bland but nutritional, and most importantly, hydrating. Bad NVP can really dehydrate the carrier.
In fact there's a severe form of NVP. It's called Hyperemisis Gravidarum; it means you can't stop vomiting. HG is a potentially life threatening pregnancy complication.
HG can cause a pregnant person to lose weight, develop jaundice, anemia, kidney failure, blood conditions like thrombosis or an embolism, or even muscle atrophy. This is a deadly complication but there's still NO particular cure.
If you're looking at HG instead of NVP, the carrier will need to be exclusively on bland broths so they can keep it down. Antihistamines are used as medication, and the BEST herb for that is processed Stinging Nettle.
(Nettle btw is actually an extremely important herb and I've talked about how to harvest it, using Sneezecloud as an example because he requires it for his allergies.)
Stinging Nettle is common as an introduced plant in most temperate environments, but if you don't have that in your chosen biome, do some research into plants used to treat allergies. Those will be a good source of antihistamine.
But, I'm not messing around with how hard NVP and HG are to treat. If HG doesn't respond to that, you may need to consider an abortion-- but keep in mind that the later term the abortion, the more dangerous it will be.
HG is rare, thankfully!! But pregnancy is a dangerous time. Less dangerous for cats, but still dangerous nonetheless.
(Yes btw, cats can develop both of these conditions. It's rarer than in humans though, since we're pretty uniquely fucked up as a species in terms of reproduction)

MY LITTLE TINY SMALL PETITS LENZ SIBLINGS!!!
Tumblr media
JUST LOOK AT THEM! So pure, so innocent! I haven’t post any real art for like…A month?…And I am really sorry about that. THIS IS WHY I AM GOING TO TELL MORE ABOUT MY AU BILLY’S PAST IN THIS POST!
Billy’s real father drowned when the boy was a toddler. He didn’t care tho, he doesn’t remember his dad at all. After a while, his mom meets his stepfather (who later involved her in the sect, by the way!) and she gives birth to the second child, Agnes.
Agnes is Billy’s MOST favorite person in the whole world. He loved her even more than he loved his mother, as she was too busy with her new husband. The only pure sheep in this nasty place.
“How was your day at school, pretty Agnes? Have you already gotten used to the new place? Good, good.”
He loves his sister dearly. He still does.
Oh, by the way! As you can see in the picture, Agnes suffers from jaundice. IT’S NOT THAT IMPORTANT THO!!! She will be cured of it really soon, so she won’t even remember how once upon a time she was a Simpson. HOWEVER, her disease impacts on how Billy remembers what she looks like.
Finally posted this, haha. I’m planning on making a lore video about them, hope my studies will let me do it as soon as possible
_(:3 」∠)_
BONUS!!! Here is some stuff I made while drawing them. Honestly I love Agnes sm, she’s like my favorite character in Attica. Such an interesting character, I’m willing to tell you more about her

Genus: Icteria
Tumblr media
Yellow-breasted Chat (Jim Conrad)
Originally placed into the genus Turdus by Linnaeus in 1758, and by extension the family Turdidae, the genus of Icteria was given to the Yellow-breasted Chat by Louis Pierre Vieillot in 1807. The etymology here refers to the color of the bird (ikteros 'jaundice-yellow') but may be a possible reference to the Golden Oriole (Oriolus), as it was said the sight of that bright yellow bird could cure jaundice.
I won't lie... I still struggle to see how anyone could have placed this bird in Parulidae. These birds are large, round and dense compared to the rest of the wood warblers, with only the Connecticut Warbler coming close in size. Their song sounds more like a blackbird trying to be a mockingbird- as their 'chat' name would suggest, the song is a run-on of various, almost random phrases. Not to mention, their bill and feet are a gray-blue, a color that is not shared amongst wood warblers. That may not seem a big deal, but sometimes the leg and bill color can help narrow down a family or genus of an unidentified bird. Vireos almost always have gray-blue bills and feet and many sparrow genuses are often associated with a pale pink color.
The current family Icteriidae was introduced in 1858 by Spencer Baird, but Yellow-breasted Chat did not officially get placed into its own family until the 2017 genetic restructuring. While Parulidae is the family placement most notable for the chat, it was also sorted thought to belong to Passerellidae (New World sparrows), Icteridae (New World blackbirds), and there was even a suggestion they could belong to Thraupidae (tanagers).
Having their own family makes the most sense and the current thought of placement within the songbird family tree is as a sister family to NW blackbirds, with the wood warblers as their next closest cousin. Some further evidence that could help support this placement is a possible hybrid between a Yellow-breasted Chat and some species of oriole, which belongs to the NW blackbird family. Here are the "Choriole" eBird sightings (it should be noted that this chat has not been captured for genetic analysis, so its other parent is unknown).

First-Year Puppy Vaccinations
Tumblr media
When you bring that fuzzy ball of puppy energy into your home, you know right away that your new puppy depends on you for, well, everything. It’s up to you to give your new puppy all the care they need every day. It can be a little intimidating — your puppy needs the best puppy food, plenty of attention, puppy training, puppy-safe toys, puppy socialization, a comfortable place to sleep, and proper veterinary care. And that includes making sure to schedule puppy shots throughout your puppy’s first year.
Which Shots Do Puppies Need?
Going to the vet over several months for a series of puppy vaccinations—and then for boosters or titers throughout your dog’s life—may seem inconvenient, but the diseases that vaccinations will shield our puppies and dogs from are dangerous, potentially deadly, and, thankfully, mostly preventable.
We read about so many different dog vaccinations, for so many different illnesses, that it can sometimes be confusing to know which vaccinations puppies need and which puppy shots are important but optional. Here is an overview of the diseases that puppy vaccinations will help your pet avoid.
Bordetella Bronchiseptica
This highly infectious bacterium causes severe fits of coughing, whooping, vomiting, and, in rare cases, seizures and death. It is the primary cause of kennel cough. There are injectable and nasal spray vaccines available.
If you plan on boarding your puppy in the future, attending group training classes, or using dog daycare services, often proof of this vaccination will usually be required.
Canine Distemper
A severe and contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal (GI), and nervous systems of dogs, raccoons, skunks, and other animals, distemper spreads through airborne exposure (through sneezing or coughing) from an infected animal. The virus can also be transmitted by shared food and water bowls and equipment. It causes discharges from the eyes and nose, fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, twitching, paralysis, and, often, death. This disease used to be known as “hard pad” because it causes the footpad to thicken and harden.
There is no cure for distemper. Treatment consists of supportive care and efforts to prevent secondary infections, control symptoms of vomiting, seizures and more. If the animal survives the symptoms, it is hoped that the dog’s immune system will have a chance to fight it off. Infected dogs can shed the virus for months.
Canine Hepatitis
Infectious canine hepatitis is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and the eyes of the affected dog. This disease of the liver is caused by a virus that is unrelated to the human form of hepatitis. Symptoms range from a slight fever and congestion of the mucous membranes to vomiting, jaundice, stomach enlargement, and pain around the liver. Many dogs can overcome the mild form of the disease, but the severe form can kill. There is no cure, but doctors can treat the symptoms.
Canine Parainfluenza
This is one of several viruses that can contribute to kennel cough.
Coronavirus
The canine coronavirus is not the same virus that causes COVID-19 in people. COVID-19 is not thought to be a health threat to dogs, and there is no evidence it makes dogs sick. Canine coronavirus usually affects dogs’ gastrointestinal systems, though it can also cause respiratory infections. Signs include most GI symptoms, including loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Doctors can keep a dog hydrated, warm, and comfortable, and help alleviate nausea, but no drug kills coronaviruses.
Heartworm
When your puppy is around 12-to-16 weeks, talk to your vet about starting a heartworm preventive medication. Though there is no vaccine for heartworm in dogs, it is preventable with regularly administered heartworm medication that your veterinarian will prescribe.
The name is descriptive — these worms lodge in the right side of the heart and the pulmonary arteries (that send blood to the lungs), though they can travel through the rest of the body and sometimes invade the liver and kidneys. The worms can grow to 14 inches long and, if clumped together, block and injure organs.
A new heartworm infection often causes no symptoms, though dogs in later stages of the disease may cough, become lethargic, lose their appetite or have difficulty breathing. Infected dogs may tire after mild exercise. Unlike most of the conditions listed here, which are passed by urine, feces, and other body fluids, heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes. Therefore, diagnosis is made via a blood test and not a fecal exam.
Kennel Cough
Also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, kennel cough results from inflammation of the upper airways. It can be caused by bacterial, viral, or other infections, such as Bordetella and canine parainfluenza, and often involves multiple infections simultaneously. Usually, the disease is mild, causing bouts of harsh, dry coughing; sometimes it’s severe enough to spur retching and gagging, along with a loss of appetite. In rare cases, it can be deadly. It is easily spread between dogs kept close together, which is why it passes quickly through kennels. Antibiotics are usually not necessary, except in severe, chronic cases. Your vet may prescribe a dog-safe cough suppressant to help your dog (and you) get some rest, and some  dog-safe throat soothers can help make a dog more comfortable.
Leptospirosis
Unlike most diseases on this list, Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria, and some dogs may show no symptoms at all. Leptospirosis can be found worldwide in soil and water. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be spread from animals to people. When symptoms do appear, they can include fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, severe weakness and lethargy, stiffness, jaundice, muscle pain, infertility, kidney failure (with or without liver failure). Antibiotics are effective, and the sooner they are given, the better.
Lyme Disease
Unlike the famous “bull’s-eye” rash that people exposed to Lyme disease often spot, no such telltale symptom occurs in dogs. Lyme disease (or borreliosis) is an infectious, tick-borne disease caused by a type of bacteria called a spirochete. Transmitted via ticks, an infected dog often starts limping, his lymph nodes swell, his temperature rises, and he stops eating. The disease can affect his heart, kidney, and joints, among other things, or lead to neurological disorders if left untreated. If diagnosed quickly, a course of antibiotics is extremely helpful, though relapses can occur months or even years later.
Talk to your vet about when your puppy will be old enough for tick preventatives. Once your puppy is old enough, keep your dog on tick preventative medication, topicals, or wearables to help stop ticks from biting in the first place.
Parvovirus
Parvo is a highly contagious virus that affects all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies less than four months of age are at the most risk to contract it. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal system and creates a loss of appetite, vomiting, fever, and often severe, bloody diarrhea. Extreme dehydration can come on rapidly and kill a dog within 48-to-72 hours, so prompt veterinary attention is crucial. There is no cure, so keeping the dog hydrated and controlling the secondary symptoms can keep him going until his immune system beats the illness.
Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease of mammals that invades the central nervous system, causing headache, anxiety, hallucinations, excessive drooling, fear of water, paralysis, and death. It is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. Treatment within hours of infection is essential, otherwise, death is highly likely. Most states require regular rabies vaccinations. Check with your vet about rabies vaccination laws and requirements in your area.
Talk with your veterinarian about more information and guidance on necessary and optional vaccinations.
Puppy Vaccination Schedule
The first thing to know is that there is not just one puppy vaccination schedule for all dogs. Factors such as which part of the country you live in, and your dog’s individual risk factors will come into play. Some dogs do not need every vaccine. This decision is between you and your veterinarian. Always discuss puppy vaccinations at your regularly scheduled appointments.
That said, here is a generally accepted guideline of the puppy vaccination schedule for the first year.
Tumblr media
How Much Do Puppy Vaccinations Cost?
How much puppy vaccinations will cost depends on several factors. Where you live is a big one: Veterinarians in crowded and expensive urban areas will generally charge more than a rural vet in a small town. You may be able to find low-cost clinics providing rabies vaccinations sponsored by your local municipal government. But no matter what the range in costs, some vaccines, such as the “core vaccines” and rabies, are necessary.
The average cost can average around $75—100. These will include the core vaccines, which are administered in a series of three: at 6-, 12-, and 16 weeks old.
The core vaccines include the DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, and parainfluenza). Your pup will also need a rabies vaccination, which is usually around $15—20. (Some clinics include the cost of the rabies vaccination.)
Often animal shelters charge less for vaccines — approximately $20 — or are even free. If you acquired your dog from a shelter, he would most likely have been vaccinated, up until the age when you got him.
The initial puppy vaccination costs during the first year are higher than during adulthood.
Vaccinations for Adult Dogs: Boosters and Titers
There is a difference of opinion about having your adult dog vaccinated every year. Some vets believe too many vaccinations in adult dogs pose health risks. But others disagree, saying that yearly vaccinations will prevent dangerous diseases such as distemper. Talk with your vet to determine what kind of vaccination protocol works for you and your dog.
Many dog owners opt for titer tests before they administer annual vaccinations. Titer tests measure a dog’s immunity levels, and this can determine which, if any, vaccinations are necessary. One key exception to this is rabies: a titer test is not an option when it comes to the rabies vaccine. This vaccination is required by law across the United States. Your vet can tell you the schedule for your particular state, with boosters often lasting three years.
And it’s all worth it. For your effort and care your puppy will lavish you with lifelong love in return. This critical first year of her life is a fun and exciting time for both of you. As she grows physically, the wonderful bond between you will grow, too.

Raising awareness for chronic health conditions
The Global Risks Report examines some of the most serious threats that the world may see in the next ten years, considering the speed at which technology is developing, economic instability, global warming, and conflict. Weakened economies and societies may only need the tiniest shock to push past the very edge of resilience when it comes under pressure.
The 19th GRR published by the World Economic Forum informs us about all possible major dangers to humans and human development. Amongst the social issues, the rise of chronic diseases is one of them that terrifies the common people, as it can affect anyone from any social or economic background alike. Raising awareness regarding the preventative measures of chronic conditions is imperative for the risks to be dealt with.
While some of the hazards we face are well-known from human history, like pandemics and geopolitical wars, others are relatively new and rapidly changing, including changes in the Earth system or unfavourable effects from the latest technologies. Multiple global risks are connected with each other and may have adverse effects on humanity– clawing at our feeble shields and decreasing our ability to counter them.
Chronic illness is mainly referred to any illness that lasts beyond 21 to 30 days. Some of these are hypertension, diabetes, cancer, cardiac diseases, stroke, psychological disorders, and many more. As mentioned by Md Wasim Mondal, a nurse working in the Apollo Hospital, chronic diseases are mainly caused due to unhealthy lifestyle led by a person. He stated 3 major reasons due to which a person might develop a chronic illness: diet, lifestyle, and stress. There is no definite cure for chronic diseases but with certain measures, they can be controlled.
Some of the preventative measures according to Dr. Jigar Nayak, who is an MS surgeon, include exercising, doing yoga, maintaining a proper diet, and managing stress effectively. It is also better to replace carbonated drinks with organic beverages like coconut water and lemon water. He stated that if someone is already suffering from a chronic disease; along with the above-mentioned points they also need to go for regular checkups, have protein-rich food, and refrain from smoking & drinking.
Dr. Jigar Nayak shared one of his experiences with a patient who was suffering from chronic disease. According to the doctor when the patient came to him for the first time, they considered his condition to be jaundice as the symptoms mainly included yellow eyes, drastic fluctuation in weight, and many more. However, the prescribed medications did not make any impact on his condition. Thereafter they made further tests and concluded that he was suffering from Pancreatic Cancer. Since there is no cure for this disease, all that the doctor and the medical staff could do was to reduce his suffering. They assisted the man to improve by putting him on a better diet, encouraging him to exercise, and in fact assisting him to lead a healthier life. “You are what you eat.” said Dr. Jigar Nayak implying that to lead a healthy lifestyle one must eat healthy and exercise regularly.
To conclude, a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet must be followed by every individual to prevent the looming danger of chronic conditions. Stress management and minimising harmful practices, primarily smoking and drinking are necessary. It is worth mentioning that the occupation of many is a great source of stress, and prevents some from having healthier lifestyles as well. How corporations and organisations shall make changes to ensure the health of their employees should be discussed and materialised.

(Hanahaki AU tag : Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3)
(CONTENT NOTE: equivalent of conversion therapy discussed at the end of this one. just stop reading after the ——— if that's going to be bad for you.)
Eddie twists away from the yellow light of the van, trying to get his body under control. “Sorry,” he wheezes. “Not a singer. Shouldn’tve smoked before trying to belt metal shit.” He hunches over and picks the last jaundiced petals from his mouth, crushing them in his fist before dropping them as casually as he can into a clump of grass.
His mouth is clean when he turns back around. He climbs back into the van and slumps against the wall, strumming something mindless, more to feel the comfortingly solid corners of his guitar tucked up close to his body than anything else.
“If you don’t warm up first, with those kinds of vocals, it’ll fuck up your throat,” he says.
“Never knew that.” Steve hands Eddie a water bottle. “Sounds dangerous.”
Eddie takes a sip, willing the water to drown out whatever’s growing in his guts. He pictures it like a punishing rain. “I live on the edge,” he says.
“Uh-huh,” says Steve. “Drink your water, Evel Knievel.”
Eddie takes another gulp, knowing it won’t do a damn thing. He sits back and starts picking out some chords that resolve into a Springsteen song. It sounds sweeter on a solo acoustic like this and he rolls with it, fingerpicking the melody and humming along, giving it a folky strum to fill it out.
Steve sings along with the chorus, going da da da when he doesn’t know the words. His voice isn’t too bad; a little unpracticed, but smooth and warm. It feels right for the small space they’re inhabiting, the dim warm van on one side and the rolling shadows of Illinois prairie on the other.
“You’re pretty good at that,” says Steve when the song’s done.
“Don’t sound so shocked, Harrington.” Eddie gets up to tuck the guitar back into its bag. “We should probably turn in. Get an early start tomorrow.”
He’s been pretty carefully not thinking about sleeping arrangements. He doesn’t think Steve’s likely to pitch a fit over sharing a mattress with another guy, but at least he’s got the moral high ground here as the person who didn’t initiate this little buddy-comedy storyline.
Steve puts up some token bitching, but shucks his jeans and gets under the blanket readily enough.
“Figured you would’ve brought along some silk pyjamas or something,” says Eddie, when the silence makes him feel too fidgety.
“I didn’t have a lot of time to pack, okay?” Steve huffs, throwing an arm over his eyes. “When Henderson told me you’d canceled all your stupid wizard games, I drove over right away. I guess you didn’t see me ‘cause you were just starting to load up the van. Figured I had about a half-hour before you disappeared, so I just raced home and grabbed whatever I could in five minutes.”
“Right,” says Eddie. “And then you decided to launch an ambush.”
“Yeah, yeah, how else was I gonna get you to talk to me?”
“Well, you’ve got me now, Steve. I’m an open book, what d’you want to know?”
“Why are we on this roadtrip, Eddie?”
I’m here to get away from you, thinks Eddie. You’re here because…I don’t know why you’re here.
“Freedom,” he says instead. “Adventure. The American Dream.”
———
There are places, Eddie knows, that specialize in cutting out the bloom for very specific cases. Except it’s not really the bloom they’re trying to cut out.
There are places, Eddie knows, that will drag you away and put you in a room and tell you that the person you loved will never love you back. They’ll do it again and again, until you believe it, and if you start coughing up flowers, they know they’ve won. They’ll cut it out of you and send you home and tell you that you’re cured. They do it to people, to kids, who fall in the kind of love that needs curing.
They did it to Wayne.
Wayne doesn’t like to talk about it, but it’s why Eddie lives with him now: his uncle, the black sheep in a family of jailbirds and junkies. The only one so unforgivable that his parents, Eddie’s grandparents, paid good money to get him sent to a place in Ohio back in ‘46.
As far as Eddie’s aware, Wayne’s never relapsed. Even had a girl for a while, before Eddie came to live with him. Eddie’s old man wasn’t gonna shell out the cash to send him to any kind of doctors who’d get him fixed, and anyway he’d been too young to have a chance at blooming when they caught him messing with Ollie Peterson from down the way. They don’t talk about it, him and Wayne, but they both know why it’s been the two of them in a trailer in the middle of nowhere, Indiana.
So Eddie thinks Wayne’ll get it, afterwards. Wayne’s never tried to change a single thing about Eddie, just made space for him to be the way he is. Wayne’ll respect that this is how it has to be.
He’ll send a postcard once they’re a few states away. There's still time.

Halloween Fic Recs 2023 Week 4: Other ships
Not much longer till Halloween! This week's stories are from a variety of ships - not necessarily rarepairs, but not enough spooky fics to make up an entire rec list.
The End of All Things by cakeisnotpie (Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, Mature, 17,801 words)
Summary: Clint Barton could always see ghosts and monsters, and now that he's a ghost hunter with his partner Natasha, he's about to come across a house that is well and truly haunted, one that seems to be waiting for him. A seriously spooky bit of horror completely with monsters and ghosts and creepy-crawlies and nightmares just in time for All Hallow's Eve. Happy Samhain, ya'll.
Monsters 'R' Us by Not_You (Clint Barton/Phil Coulson/Natasha Romanov, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Mature, 20,183 words)
Summary: Phil Coulson is one of the last of the old school monster hunters, and finds himself in the company of a werewolf and her human.
Bite Down by avesnongrata (@avesnongrata) (Maria Hill/Natasha Romanov, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Explicit, 5,224 words)
Summary: "I could change your life, Maria. And all you need to do is trust me." Seasoned monster hunter Maria Hill is tasked with tracking down a dangerous supernatural creature in the heart of the jungle. Her hunt does not go the way she planned.
The rest are below the cut!
Between the Shadow and the Soul by Yeetmeaway (Romanogers, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Mature, 151,121 words)
Note: this is a sequel to the amazing For Whose Love I Rise and Fall
Summary: After receiving Shield’s cure, Steve’s memory of the past seventy-five years of being infected with Hydra’s virus has been wiped clean. He's grateful for it— it's better to forget the suffering he caused as an infected monster, but as he navigates the unfamiliar world he has woken up in, it becomes clear that his past isn't done with him. Troubled by disturbing dreams and by strange, lingering feelings that he can't explain, Steve struggles to navigate exactly who and what he is now. But a new threat emerging in the wake of Hydra’s destruction has a strange obsession with Steve and his new partner, Natasha Romanoff. The mere presence of this threat promises to destroy what little ground Shield has gained in this war and if Steve and Natasha can’t stop him, they stand to lose far more than just their lives.
you know i didn't want to (have to haunt you) by dharmainitiative (@rocketnebulas) (SamBucky, Teen And Up Audiences, 46,052 words)
Summary: Sam Wilson is an amazing realtor. He works hard, he takes care of his clients, and he can sell any house he puts his mind to. Unless, of course, the house happens to be haunted by an irritating, standoffish ghost who died in 1940. Then things get a little more complicated.
The Way Out Is Through by samwontshare (Attaining) (@samwontshare) (SamBucky, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Explicit, 12,097 words)
Summary: Sam and Bucky's love story in Wakanda is interrupted when Sam contracts a virus that makes him crave human flesh. Bucky will do anything to keep him safe. And fed. Instead of The Blip, Thanos' minions brought the zombie apocalypse. (Aka a Sambucky zombie romance. Happy Halloween!)
Best and Last of All Things by anactoria (@anactorya) (SamBucky, Mature, 7,481 words)
Summary: Just a couple of guys, holding each other together as the world falls apart. (Alternatively: Fucking zombies.)
batteries and holy ghosts, buried in my bag of bones by starvels (dinosaur) (@starvels) (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark/Janet Van Dyne, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Mature, 8,102 words)
Summary: “You don’t sleep anymore," Steve says. “Yeah, I guess not,” Tony agrees, smiling like that’s funny somehow. Steve hates it. “But Jan does and she could use some company.” Steve’s eyes close again. Jan. Sharp, unnerving Jan. Jaundice yellow and grave-dirt-black magic Jan.
D.I.Y. (Demons In You) by RedTeamShark (WinterHawk, Explicit, 37,828 words)
Summary: Clint and Bucky are ready to take the next step in their lives and buy a house together. And when the opportunity arises for Clint’s small Youtube channel to get a big sponsorship on a home renovation series, it seems that the stars are aligning for them. Buying and remodeling an older house is a much bigger project than they expect, and old houses hold old secrets. Have the two found a place to live and love together, or is forever homea bit more literal than they ever intended?
Historic Features by flawedamythyst (@flawedamythyst) (WinterHawk, background Stony, Teen And Up Audiences, 19,254 words)
Summary: “Electrical surges with no source, and music coming from the air, and that damn baseball game no one was watching, and I swear I sometimes hear voices right on the edge of hearing when I should be alone,” said Tony. “What does that sound like to you?”  “Sounds like-” said Steve, then hesitated. Tony gave him a pointed look. “Sounds like a haunting,” he finished, reluctantly.  “Oh no,” said Clint, in tones of mock-horror. “Ghosts!”  Bucky laughed and kissed him. “Man, I hope they’re friendly.”  Clint and Bucky are haunting the new apartment that Tony bought in Brooklyn to try and impress Steve.
The Ghost of a Chance by atothej (WinterHawk, Major Character Death, Teen And Up Audiences, 2,341 words)
Summary: The Asset's only constant companion is the ghost that haunts him.
The Road Less Traveled at the End of the Line by NarutoRox (@muteelfmoonmoon) (WinterIron, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Teen And Up Audiences, 27,889 words)
Summary: To say Steve is surprised to wake up haunting his loved ones after sinking his plane into the ocean would be an understatement. To say he enjoys it would be just plain cruel. For starters, there’s the ‘minor’ problem of said loved ones being unable to see or hear him, which is bad enough. Things only get worse when he finds out Bucky is alive, but held prisoner by the very people he and Steve had fought against, leaving Steve to watch as HYDRA slowly tries to unmake his best friend. Then there’s Tony, Howard’s genius son, whom Steve loves dearly and may or may not be a little protective of after watching him grow up under Howard’s less-than-stellar care. Steve doesn’t know if they keep him sane or drive him crazy, but he does know that Bucky and Tony are the two most important people in his world. He also doesn’t know if it would make his life easier if they knew each other or not, but it doesn’t matter; they’ve never met, are on opposite sides of the world, and other than being cared about by Steve, have nothing else to do with each other. Until Tony is kidnapped by the Ten Rings…and HYDRA thaws Bucky for a mission…And Steve decides it’s about time these two met.
Take My Hand (Don't Fear the Reaper) by dracusfyre (@dracusfyre) (WinterIron, Major Character Death, Not Rated, 6,693 words)
Summary: For the ITAB prompt:  After Afghanistan tony became a part-time grim reaper assigned to the winter soldier, since Bucky has a messed up head he can see tony.
