Lately, I've been watching through the four Video 125 driver's eye views filmed in 1995. It's interesting to look back at the British railway system as it was 30 years ago. The network had a bit of a rustic look to it back then, something which would change drastically with privatisation soon afterwards, but there was certainly a lot more variety of traction to be enjoyed in those days compared to the somewhat bland scene of today. Of these four programmes, perhaps the most notable time capsules are Metropolitan Main Line and The Royal Scot, as both the Metropolitan Line and West Coast Main Line have changed dramatically since 1995. It's also interesting to note that The Royal Scot crosses over with the other three 1995 DEVs; the WCML passes through Litchfield Trent Valley, where Cross City Birmingham finishes, passes underneath the Metropolitan Line at Kenton and passes through Carnforth, where The Cumbrian Coast starts. I was only three years old in 1995, so I'm too young to actually remember what the railway network was like back then, but much of what was seen in these programmes was still around as I was growing up, so seeing these reminds me of those simpler times.
