I need a maths textbook for adults like me who were utterly failed by the education system from the start but want to learn some maths anyway. Like a textbook going over all the basics from the ground up in easy to understand, non-judgemental language with lots of examples and explanations why and how things work.

The question of "is Shathann a bad mother" really doesn't interest me half so much as the implication in Taash and Emmrich's banters that she was in fact not a very good teacher. Which makes sense! "Teacher" and "scholar" aren't the same thing, and as she says more than once she's a scholar. I'm imagining one of those university professors who's definitely an expert in their field and super smart but doesn't seem to have ever taken a teaching course in their life and isn't entirely sure how to deal with students who aren't also experts in their field, except Shathann was trying to teach a small child and not a grown adult. It's not a surprise that that didn't go super well (for those who haven't seen it Taash has banter with Emmrich where it's made clear that Shathann regularly—though definitely not deliberately—made them feel like an idiot for knowing less than her, the grown woman who'd dedicated her life to studying these things), but I find that angle much more intriguing than the mother angle.

B4 I actually watched stories and was just reading the events on the god forsaken fandom wiki I was pronouncing emu/nene as eemu/neenee in my head… I could say “I don’t know Japanese” as a reason but English also favors the [e] pronunciation of “e” vs [i] (i.e bed vs see) in situations like this. My excuse for emu is the bird but idk what happened with nene. I think im just stupid. Muscle memory phonics failed me. Child left behind. Girl you know how words like emulsify and never/vender are pronounced.

Usopp's constant negativity and anxiety are something useful and "positive" at the end of the day (eg: fight against Perona) because he doesn't necessarily need to change his views, he just needs to trust himself and his abilities more and he just uses what he has at the moment which is, you know, negativity. It is not something positive but it does keep him safe from danger and he will end up being proud of himself and stronger than he could ever imagine, but that doesn't mean he'll stop being negative. It's just another personality trait a lot of people have, and Usopp using it for his advantage is something great, I feel. He takes pride in being like that. He's loud and shameless about it.

Unlike Sanji, who dwells on his negativity on his own. Quietly. And lets it consume him without having any power over it. His self-sabotaging and self-sacrificing behavior often comes from a place of giving up out of fear of others getting hurt to save him because that's pretty much his core fear. Being a burden/Not being able to save the people he cares about from himself and his past. It's not something the manga shows that much in comparison to Usopp's negativity, but Sanji's pessimistic views are pretty much one of the reasons why WCI happens and why he puts himself in the worst situation in Wano.

And I think (this is why I'm writing all of this) that they're perfect for each other because Usopp could show him that being afraid and negative isn't something so bad. After all, at least Usopp is aware that if he can't do something, the crew will help him out no matter what. Usopp's negative, yes, but it's alright because he doesn't go through it on his own. Even if he does look shameless and "selfish" when desperately asking for help (he isn't, by the way. It's actually pretty reasonable to act like that). Sanji needs to learn to ask for help shamelessly too and he needs to stop putting all the weight of the world's negativity on his shoulders. They need to carry it together.

Like- There's just something so personal in Usopp going "Yes! I am scared. Frightened even. Please, help!" because he might not like that part of him and he's trying to be stronger and more independent every day, but he acknowledges that things can go south and his reaction is very fight or flight but pretty mostly flight to be safe. While Sanji's response is always to fight because he refuses to let others know he needs help in case something happens to them (and also because he feels ashamed of feeling weak). Usopp shares the responsibility and accepts that he's kind of a loser sometimes but Sanji refuses to do so.

This is just a thought about Sanji learning that being a coward and asking for help isn't bad because they're meant to do stuff like that, and Usopp growing to be stronger and independent but not necessarily stop being pessimistic because sometimes you just... Are like that. Sometimes you're scared. Sometimes you have anxiety. And that's alright. You can be strong anyway.

i've made like 3 posts over the past year about how i really do enjoy math and am fascinated by it but i feel embarrassed about how i never finished my degree and don't know nearly as much about math as most people who are interested in it, so i often feel i don't have the right to describe myself as a Math Fan, so just imagine this is one of those posts, except slightly more positive because i had a job interview today for teaching math over the summer, and it went well and made me feel optimistic about teaching math in the future even if i don't get this particular job

finally finished the priory of the orange tree after putting it off for like a year, and putting aside the fact that it's insanely boring, way too long, and the romance is lackluster, it certainly was a choice to, in a book at least in part about finding common ground and coming together, basically go "religion a is correct and good and its believers can continue on their merry lives, but religion b is a 100% incorrect wrong bad lie founded by a wrong bad misogynistic lying liar, and everyone who believes in it should convert and in fact we're going to end the book by heavily implying that the recently-converted queen is going to slowly but surely pressure the entire country to convert because their faith is wrong and bad". like that was certainly a decision that samantha shannon made.
