Bad News of the Week

In Europe and Germany, fatal attacks in public are fortunately rather rare. Perhaps this is because it makes such a big splash when something does happen. Like recently in Magdeburg. There, an assassin drove his car into a Christmas market, killing five people and injuring more than 200. This should never have happened again - after a truck crashed into the Christmas market on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin in 2016. Back then, 13 people were killed. And many discussions about security in public spaces started.

After the Berlin attacker was apparently an Islamist - at least the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) spread the word that the perpetrator had acted as a “soldier of the Islamic State” - a generally negative attitude towards Arabs has prevailed in this country ever since, to put it mildly. Which personally upsets me beyond belief, as I find nothing as bad as clan detention. But I'm just learning that you don't even need a basis for being upset. At least as far as the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany) is concerned. Because they also like to use the cheapest clichés. For example, by vilifying the Magdeburg attacker as an Islamist.

The point is that Taleb Al Abdulmohsen is an avowed and documented critic of Islam, not to say an Islamophobe. And he was on record in many respects. Good News of the Week

The Hungarian EU Council Presidency has come to an end. At least in calendar terms, because Poland takes over on 01.01.2025. Unlike his predecessor, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is a convinced European, transatlanticist, multilateralist and global citizen. Oh yes: he is also a democrat. You can sometimes doubt that with Viktor Orbán. In this respect, Hungary's six-month presidency was not under a good star. And the start was correspondingly bumpy, as Orbán began with unscheduled state visits to Moscow and Beijing. And the European Union had to clearly explain that this gentleman was not acting on an official mission and was therefore not speaking on behalf of the EU.

As a result, the regular conference of heads of government did not take place in the country of the current Council presidency as usual, but in Brussels. And at the events in Hungary, where, for example, all ministers from one area of responsibility meet, only lower ranking state secretaries or even heads of department were sent. Fortunately, we have to admit that these working meetings were actually very constructive, which is the second piece of good news. So perhaps it is good for pragmatism when it is not politicians - who, in case of doubt, always focus on their own positioning or the next election - but civil servants - who are more concretely involved in day-to-day business and in whom the media are hardly interested - who come together.

So at the end of this miniature era, it remains to be said that it is a good thing that it is over. And that it was nowhere near as bad as was feared beforehand. Of course, Orbán will continue to be a brake on important reform projects that can only be implemented with unanimity. But at least he is only one of 27 heads of government. And there are likely to be even more of them in the medium term, as one of the merits of the past Council Presidency is that the accession process of the Western Balkan countries has started moving again. And that Romania and Bulgaria have been admitted to the Schengen area despite all the clamor about re-establishing borders and preventing migration. Works for me.

Personal happy moment of the week

Even though I didn't get almost anything done that I had planned during the holiday season, I did have a few nice holidays. Which is not to be taken for granted when three generations are sitting at the table for Christmas dinner - and both the former and the current wife. And it was also a relaxing time in places. Because I slept better and spent the (specially moved forward;-) wedding anniversary with my wife in a spa. Who once again proved her angelic patience with me.

I couldn't care less...

...that the sickness rate at Germany's largest statutory health insurance company TK has reached a new record high. From January to November, insured employees were on sick leave for an average of 17.7 days, longer than in the previous two years (meaning after corona). December is still missing, where one or two people might prefer to miss a window day with an official cold rather than use up a vacation day. Because there's a difference between having someone call in sick - which can even be done by phone - and actually being ill. I'm certainly no fitter or healthier than my dear colleagues, but perhaps more disciplined. Because I was sick for just one day in 2024. And that was on vacation.

It's fine with me...

...that the air cab start-up Lilium can probably be saved after all. The investor group Mobile Uplift Corporation is helping with fresh money, and around a thousand laid-off employees are to be brought back. Over the past ten years, the Bavarian company has developed an electrically powered small aircraft that takes off and lands vertically. The first manned flight was last planned for early 2025 and the first delivery to customers for 2026. However, Lilium ran out of money on the home straight and the company had to file for insolvency at the end of October. Now things are moving forward and electromobility is becoming three-dimensional. It's nice to see innovations that don't come from the US West Coast or a Chinese development lab.

...a year has come to an end. And the beginning of an uncertain year is here. I have just seen a cartoon by Klaus Stuttmann showing two people at a laptop in an Internet café. On the left, a man is sitting at his laptop and says: “I'm a journalist and I'm currently writing my review of 2024. Everything is terrible!”. A woman is sitting on the right and says: “I'm a fortune teller and I'm currently writing my horoscope for 2025. Everything is terrible!”. Yes, somehow you're glad that this crazy year is over. But the harbingers of the next one aren't much better. Or is it all just a question of perspective and you just can't allow yourself to be drawn into a maelstrom of pessimism, because otherwise evil will win all the more? Mmmh...

Every 25 years, the Catholic Church celebrates an “annus iubilaeus”, a jubilee year. 2025 is another such holy year. Pope Francis has now heralded this by opening the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, which has been closed since 2000. Jorge Mario Bergoglio and I are separated by many fundamental aspects. After all, he is the head of an organization from which I left at a young age out of conviction. But I have to give him credit for two things. On the one hand, he tries - within the famous bounds of what is possible - to reform things more than all his predecessors put together.

And secondly, he is personally much more approachable than the Vatican, credibly embodying humility and mercy. With any other church representative, for example, washing the feet of refugees on Lampedusa would have seemed like a PR stunt, but I believed Francis' personal concern. Especially in times of great uncertainty, as we are currently experiencing, faith is an important anchor for many people in the roaring sea of abysses that rages around us. If someone then manages to convey hope without self-interest playing a role, they have my blessing. Amen - which ultimately means “So be it”...

EU Commission approves acquisition of Run:ai by NVIDIA

The European Commission unconditionally approved the acquisition of Israeli AI chip software company Run:ai by US chip manufacturer NVIDIA, according to Euractiv.

The commission began investigating the acquisition following a request from the Italian National Competition Authority on 30 September. However, the investigation was terminated, as the proposed acquisition “would not raise competition concerns on any of the markets examined in the EEA or in Italy,” according to a Commission press release.

NVIDIA dominates the AI value chain. The Commission assessed whether the company could “compromise the compatibility between its [AI chips] and the [AI chip] orchestration software of Run:ai’s competitors.”

Although neither company is based in the EU, the Commission still investigated the acquisition because it threatened “to significantly affect competition within the territory of the member state(s).”

NVIDIA will have neither the technical ability nor the incentive to hamper the compatibility of its GPUs with competing GPU orchestration software due to the availability and widespread use of tools that ensure such compatibility.

However, Run:ai’s competitors claimed that the Israeli company did not have a significant position in the chip orchestration software market. Therefore, consumers would still have access to “sufficient credible alternatives […] as well as the possibility of building their GPU orchestration software in-house.”
