Bio: Jo grew up on Earth-295, a reality where Charles Xavier did not live to begin working towards his dream and Apocalypse conquered and ruled North America.

Lawrence and Priscilla Montgomery raised their three daughters outside of Nashville, TN. Well, raised might be a stretch, as Lawrence was too wrapped up in his successful real estate business and Priscilla too focused on appearances around town to spend much time with their own children. That being said, expectations were set very high very early for the three Montgomery girls. They attended the best (read: most expensive) private schools. The eldest daughter studied law and the middle business, with Jo anticipated to be directed towards STEM based on her early aptitude for math. At least until Jo’s mutant abilities manifested and the entire family dynamic changed. Overnight, young Jo went from being the precocious and opinionated baby of the Montgomery clan to the family’s darkest secret. Having a mutant in the family simply didn’t fit the ideal lifestyle that the Montgomery’s were obsessed with crafting. Priscilla Montgomery even attempted to seek out alternate explanations for their daughter’s troubling new behaviors, finding one private physician willing to diagnose the girl with a form of anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder; but having someone in the family with a mental illness was just as unacceptable as having a mutant.

When Apocalypse fully took hold of North America, the Montgomery’s became even more wary of Jo. Mutants had taken over and they had one under their roof. If Jo had been deemed as something undesirable before, now she was simply a ghost in the halls of the family home. One night she is plagued with a vision in her sleep - Apocalypse’s Infinites marching into town to gather humans and any mutants that stand in their way for the cullings. There was enough time to warn her family, to get them all out, but Jo was angry in a way that can only fester within a teenager. An emotion set deep in the bones that knows no logic. So the night the Infinites arrive, Jo hides. She watches from the treeline as her parents and sisters are rounded up along with their other human neighbors, presumably never to be seen again. Jo turns away and never looks back.

Fortunately, this was a time when mutants not in Apocalypse’s good graces (read: not actively kissing his ass) frequently took care of each other, and Jo finds herself a modicum of safety amongst a group of street teens. They’d watch each other’s backs, steal what they needed from the mutant elite, and occasionally sabotage Apocalypse’s forces. When their settlement is attacked by Infinites, Jo nearly loses her own life trying to help some of the younger teens escape. It was just her luck that she was saved by one Remy LeBeau, known as Gambit to his X-Men teammates, who happened to be passing after performing a supply raid nearby. Her own group now scattered, Gambit invites her along with him and tells her of Magneto’s X-Men.

Magneto is wary of new faces - Apocalypse has spies everywhere - but his son Quicksilver is keen to join Gambit in vouching for Jo, pointing out that it would behoove them to have a precog on their side. Jo develops a bit of a crush on Quicksilver (he even suggests her mutant nom de guerre, Preview), but it’s Gambit who really takes her under his wing. He helps her improve her fighting ability, allowing her to grow from a scrappy street kid to someone that might not be a heavy hitter but can certainly handle herself in a pinch.

During a mission that pitted Magneto’s X-Men against Apocalypse and his Prelates and Infinities, Jo is keeping watch along the outside of the battle zone. She is approached by the unlikely form of Harrison Snow, a self-proclaimed multiversal refugee with plans to assemble a powerful team of mutants intent on saving doomed timelines just like this one. Immensely torn and feeling as if she’s abandoning the only people that she ever truly fit in with, Jo agrees to join Snow’s team. Anything for even the smallest chance at putting things right. For the mutants she cares so much about to have normal lives. To make up for her past mistakes.

Upon arriving on Earth-616, Jo discovers that her time with X-Factor is destined to be more complicated than she could ever imagine. Snow is frustrated with the unpredictable nature of her precognitive visions. And Jo? She never could have imagined she would be staring into such familiar faces in this reality. Guess that’s just how the multiverse goes.

✾ Domain Expansion: Hell Prism

Hell Prism is something the Shikabane more or less used against other people, namely their own family members, as a means of exerting power over them and expanding influence. Though, that wasn’t what it started out as, its primary use meant to specifically obliterate curses (not really too different from any other DE). The Shikabane were exceedingly proud of it, those capable of using it finely honing it over the centuries until it steadily became what it is now, as Kaede wields it.

It’s characterized by a surrealist, kaleidoscopic manifestation of a colloquial hell. The visuals are psychedellically haunting and seamlessly endless, a thousand vile, burning mirrors showing his targets the many ways he can kill them - and which one is real. It allows the user to effectively trap, torture, maim, and kill a target at their leisure within its bounds, while at the same time leeching their cursed energy and eating away at the body and soul. This may, at times, double-function as a psychological prison, given his ability to illusorily kill his target in an infinite number of ways to break them down psychologically, if he so chooses. As in, he can really kill you, or he can fuck with your head - you’re not really going to know what’s actually happening until you draw your last breath or his domain is broken.

The problem with Hell Prism, however, is that it requires immense cursed energy to use it, more than Kaede readily possesses, so the use of Blood Sacrifice almost always precludes it (think of Blood Sacrifice as a trade of sorts; he offers any amount of his own blood or someone else’s, containing cursed energy, in exchange for a sort of…overclocking; it’s essentially a power-buff-at-cost-of-max-health). But once Hell Prism is cast, despite it’s incredible strength, it has a few limitations. Such being that it can only take in an individual-small group of targets at a time, despite the push toward large-scale use by Kaede. The trade-offs are usually too high to justify using it too often, given that, whether Kaede uses his own blood or someone else’s, a small piece of himself is sacrificed regardless, per his agreement with the inugami. Moreover, the ‘cool down’ time following his use of it? Bonkers. It used to be a few weeks to a month that he couldn’t use it again - just too taxing on the body and soul - but he was able to whittle it down to a week. So he has to be extremely careful and choosy when he uses it, or risk losing his trump card for too fucking long. Perhaps someday, this bullshit 'cool down’ time will be reduced even further, to maybe just a day between uses.

Although, he’ll be in pretty big trouble if he uses it too frequently, since every use eats away at his soul like acid. Beyond that, though, he does go on to perform both large-scale uses of Hell Prism, managing to completely wipe both Inunaki Village and the Shikabane estate off the map (every curse he came across suffered dearly, tbh, especially the one that slaughtered the rest of his family).

// Some thoughts on Immortality vis-à-vis To Your Eternity

Why is there a (sometimes hidden) assumption that being immortal automatically means the following expectations:

being incredibly intelligent

hella knowledgeable

an expert generalist

"the one with the answer" in the entire group?

It's prevalent in pop culture which, I'm gonna guess, is a product of tons of fiction and myths that "say so."

But I think people take these assumptions for granted way too much and start to impose a universality that I don't think holds up to immortal characters who are human or possess human brains.

The qualifiers "human" and "possessing human brains" (or human cognition) are very important here. If this immortal is non-human, then this critique isn't aimed at them. Read on if you like, though.

The (human) brain is simply not an infinite memory space the way a computer database could theoretically be. Limitations are one of the most important factors that shape the course of a brain's evolution; hell, I once wrote a ramble regarding the difference between an AI's information processing vs. human cognition.

(Yes, it was outfitted with citations. Yes, it was completely unprompted and no one asked for it. At all. You may start to notice a pattern regarding me.)

Children generally get to learn and absorb as much information as they like with minimal cost until they're of a certain age, and then the pruning of neurons starts. The number of neurons we have is reduced because the brain now favors depth instead of breadth of knowledge. You cut off the things you don't actually need in your life to free new neurons for any domain that needs it.

This isn't just about memories. It's about things like your optical sense, your auditory sense, the whole shebang. Every part of your brain is constantly vying for free real estate to bolster its own domain; it's a relentless competition for neurons.

What does that mean?

It means even if you're immortal—so long as you're human or possess a human brain—you'll always be limited in your knowledge and skills. You can try to learn as many things as you want, but you're doing it at a cost, all the time.

Think about it. How well do you remember everything you've ever learned in school?

Do you remember the details of, say, the differing carbon pathways for C3 and C4 plants? Do you remember there are two kinds of mechanisms?

Do you remember how to calculate a region's longitude and latitude using their timezone via employing the Greenwich Meridian Line as a reference point, or a region of a known timezone?

Do you remember how to exchange inch to centimeter, or pound to kilogram, or Celsius to Fahrenheit, without using a converter?

How about recalling the detailed history of all four ancient civilizations and their ways of life: the Mesopotamian, the Egyptian, the Indus, and the Chinese?

So on, so forth. I don't know what everyone studied in their respective education system, but chances are, there is a lot of shit we have all "forgotten" even if we spent an inordinate amount of time committing them to memory back then. If you know the answer to any of these^ questions, then chances are you either just read/learn about them, or you regularly engage in this domain. Knowledge is never permanently stored in an individual's brain... because it can't. That's right; even skills and knowledge are not permanent in one's head. Impermanence, baby!

And that's my problem with the assumption of The All-Knowing Immortal.

While it's true that an immortal human has all the time in the world to study every knowledge humanity has accumulated as a whole, they can never have all knowledge at their fingertips, because at every acquisition of something new, they disregard what is judged to be unimportant and unnecessary by the brain to free up new neurons. There is always something the Immortal doesn't know—not because they have never heard of it, but because they have forgotten about it.

But surely immortality shapes someone such that they are different from a mortal being, right?

Correct! It does, and I think in at least two major ways:

(1) Expertise

Even a mortal being could gradually become an expert in one or—in the case of a polymath—various domains. Again, a mature brain favors depth instead of breadth. The more you practice, the more your neurons refine and develop, and the more skilled you become. That's how experts are created.

Since an Immortal has a lot more time (and with time comes resources and opportunities) to hone their skills in several domains, it stands that they will be incredibly expert in these domains over a long period.

The catch, though, is that they are only an expert in the domains they frequently engage in. It doesn't translate to being an expert in literally every other trade under the sun. It doesn't even mean they will become an instant expert after some light-reading about those trades because expertise ≠ genius. Some domains' knowledge may afford the Immortal an easier path to understanding related domains, but it still doesn't mean the Immortal is gonna be a pro and galaxy-brain at it without effort and cost.

(2) Experience

Experience is gained from how long one experiences life, so naturally, an Immortal is gonna have a lot of that. This is why I do agree that an Immortal should likely be one of the wisest in the group... but I don't think this rule should be universal to all immortal beings either.

What if an Immortal spent 40 years of their life in isolation, as a hermit, whose only occasional companion was a phantom-like observer who called them out anytime he felt like the Immortal was underwhelming?

The human brain's growth and learning depend on sociality. An isolated Immortal loses its most important source of learning, so of course, they would now be even less experienced than a poison-tasting woman who traveled around and recorded her adventures and knowledge in a book.

That's right. This post has always been about Fushi... because To Your Eternity was in the title of this ramble. Ha! Read the signpost before you enter next time, you dorks! I gotcha good!

While some criticisms against Fushi's suboptimal intelligence and knowledge are warranted (and even those that aren't warranted are still interesting arguments to think about), I think people's expectation of what an Immortal being should be has gotten in the way of them seeing/appreciating Fushi as a "different kind of Immortal."

Fushi's default form is a 14-year-old boy who, for the longest time, has been living alone. That's a boy who's been deprived of social learning for a long enough time that it might have caused some brain damage (technical). That's not counting the fact that a 14-year-old brain simply isn't mature and is easily overtaken by impulses. I'm of the hypothesis that Fushi's beholden to the form they take; the proof is in how, whenever they change into one, they begin to exhibit their attributes.

Fushi's saddled with quite a lot of trauma—in fact, their trauma starts almost immediately and constantly after they are active beyond being a piece of rock or moss. What's the second word they learn after "Arigatou?" Wasn't it 痛い ("it hurts")? All of that stuff can indirectly hamper their social learning.

Fushi's base Nameless Boy form may also just be... well, not good at social learning. Or, Fushi themself isn't good at it. In other words, Fushi might just be... autistic. Bit of a headcanon there, though.

That's not all. While Fushi might have chosen to read a ton of books and whatnot, what do you think their interest will be? I don't think it's science, or politics, or philosophy, or looksmaxxing—the point is, they choose their own domains to engage in.

And even if they had read things like, I don't know, Trigonometry and Beauty or The Philosophy of Algebra or Sun Tzu's Art of War—my previous point about how knowledge can still be forgotten when those neurons fall into disuse still apply. And that's if Fushi was paying attention to what they were reading in the first place, because if you're not attentive, then good luck encoding things into your long-term memory effectively.

So what does all of this amount to?

Well, it means one may think Fushi is a dull-witted Immortal,...

...or think Fushi is a different kind of Immortal.

An Immortal that isn't as common a depiction as most others we knew in pop culture, to boot. Stil, they exhibit the two things Immortals should possess in abundance compared to a mortal being.

Firstly, they display expertise in wielding their powers (they are actually a very competent fighter come the Modern Arc and the Future Arc when they want to be). They are skilled at cooking and are generally the best at remembering the quirks, characteristics, and inclinations of every person they know well enough.

Why? Because these are the domains they engage in all the time.

Secondly, they exhibit an abundance of experience accumulated through their long lives. But here's the twist that I adore To Your Eternity for:

While the experience of an Immortal is usually depicted as a net benefit that shapes that Immortal into becoming wise, Fushi's abundance of experience as an Immortal is sometimes detrimental to them.

I'm talking, of course, about trauma as one of the main components of their experience.

We've discussed previously that Fushi's growth might have been hampered by the sheer trauma they had undergone at the start of the story. But here's the thing: their experience since then didn't exactly improve all the time. The grueling trial that was The Assault on Renril? Their previous attempts at fighting back Nokkers with varying results? Being stuck in a molten iron Prison Gate oh wow it's like Gojo ohmygod cube? Kahaku? You can list them yourself.

Even as normal human beings with limited timespan, we often find our own less-than-savory experience—including trauma—debilitating or even unbearable. Now imagine being an Immortal who keeps collecting experiences like these. Imagine yourself saddled with the suffering you've already gone through and beholden to more trauma and suffering as part of your experience living forever.

These are your experiences.

Have they made you exceptionally wise?

Not really?

deconstructing the assumptions people make about Immortals in general

and deconstructing the "shouldn't an Immortal be wise because of their experience" understanding most of us might have.

I know ya focus on the novels and eu but I gotta ask about the 343 games. Do you think one of the biggest problems with the 343 games stories is that every 343 game tries to feel like a brand new start for the story?

Oh dude game questions are free real estate, I just usually end up fielding more lore questions about the stuff that is less well-known. Lore outreach from the places you don't see so much.

Anyway, I guess yeah. I think the big problem that's going on with Halo is it feels like there's a lack of a strong center? Like, I don't think there's anyone with a real vision or creative control of the overall story. The horse is running, but 343 is barely dangling from the saddle and nobody is strong enough to pull themselves up to the reins. (And, if I had to guess based on nothing but gut instinct, anyone who tries gets held back from it by others.)

The games feel less like major events in the lore and more like when a badly organized group project finally has to present. The kid who put together the powerpoint did a great job, but you can tell nobody agreed on anything behind the scenes and this is more a Thing That Happened To Them that one person had to finish at 2 AM last night than it is what anyone wanted it to be.

Halo 4: Alright, I wasn't a huge fan, but sure.

Halo 5: Big shift in the writing team leaping off in a huge new direction.

Halo Infinite: ....The same thing again.

Halo Wars 2 is in there somewhere but I haven't... finished it...

You have a lot of creative people working on Halo, you can see it sometimes. But Halo doesn't feel like it has vision or creative leadership. It feels like it's being run by people who are so scared of murdering their cash cow that they won't commit to anything because the uncertain early stages of any commitment are too spooky. I bet it's multiple people all shooting one another down until one voice manages to push literally anything through, the fandom gets cagey about the end result, and then 343 eats the party responsible.

........But that is all guessing, I don't think my guessing is worth much because I don't fucking know anything.

It's definitely what it feels like to me though.

✾ Domain Expansion: Hell Prism

Hell Prism is something the Shikabane more or less used against other people, namely their own family members, as a means of exerting power over them. Though, that wasn't what it started out as, its primary use meant to specifically obliterate curses (not really too different from any other DE). The Shikabane were exceedingly proud of it, those capable of using it finely honing it over the centuries until it steadily became what it is now, as Kaede wields it.

It's characterized by a surrealist, kaleidoscopic manifestation of a colloquial hell. The visuals are psychedellically haunting and seamlessly endless, a thousand vile, burning mirrors showing his targets the many ways he can kill them - and which one is real. It allows the user to effectively trap, torture, maim, and kill a target at their leisure within its bounds, while at the same time leeching their cursed energy and eating away and the body and soul. This may, at times, double-function as a psychological prison, given his ability to illusorily kill his target in an infinite number of ways to break them down psychologically, if he so chooses. As in, he can really kill you, or he can fuck with your head - you're not really going to know what's actually happening until you draw your last breath or his domain is broken.

The problem with Hell Prism, however, is that requires immense cursed energy to use it, more than Kaede readily possesses, so the use of Blood Sacrifice almost always precludes it (think of Blood Sacrifice as a trade of sorts; he offers any amount of his own blood or someone else's, containing cursed energy, in exchange for a sort of...overclocking; it's essentially a power-buff-at-cost-of-max-health). But once Hell Prism is cast, despite it's incredible strength, it has a few limitations. Such being that it can only take in an individual-small group of targets at a time, despite the push toward large-scale use by Kaede. The trade-offs are usually too high to justify using it too often, given that, whether Kaede uses his own blood or someone else's, a small piece of himself is sacrificed regardless, per his agreement with the inugami. Moreover, the 'cool down' time following his use of it? Bonkers. It used to be a few weeks to a month that he couldn't use it again - just too taxing on the body and soul - but he was able to whittle it down to a week. So he has to be extremely careful and choosy when he uses it, or risk losing his trump card for too fucking long. Perhaps someday, this bullshit 'cool down' time will be reduced even further, to maybe just a day between uses.

Although, he'll be in pretty big trouble if he uses it too frequently, since every use eats away at his soul like acid. Beyond that, though, he does go on to perform both large-scale uses of Hell Prism, managing to completely wipe both Inunaki Village and the Shikabane estate off the map (every curse he came across suffered dearly, tbh, especially the one that slaughtered the rest of his family).

I’m so glad you asked! And I hope you’re ready for a MAJOR infodump here~

This is going to be a pretty lengthy post, so I’m going to do a full rundown of the backstory and such under the cut! There are some spoilers for the Dracula novel intermixed in there, so fair warning there if you haven’t read that. Also some Renfield 2023 spoilers towards the end. I’m assuming most people interacting with this have seen it, but it’s still worth warning for.

Backstory:

This AU primarily plays off of the Renfield movie and a little bit of the 1931 Dracula and the original novel itself. Ren still takes on the role of the real estate agent going to make a deal with Dracula. However, instead of just becoming Drac’s familiar (like in the Renfield movie), he gets turned into a werewolf. However, he doesn’t know this right off the bat.

Fast forward a bit, and Ren has been in the asylum for quite some time. Again, no sign of being a werewolf up to this point. But he’s pretty mentally deteriorated. When he would have died in the novel, he instead transforms for the very first time. This introduces an important plot point: His transformations are often controlled by Dracula. In this case, Drac knew he was in some deep shit with everyone on their way to kill him, and so he forced Ren to come to his rescue. And without much of a choice in the matter, Renfield has to comply.

After a killing spree in the asylum, he comes across Mina Harker. The one person who treated him as a human being through his madness. Something about that fear in her eyes, yet that unmistakable bravery as she locked gazes with him, snapped him out of all that terrifying rage he had. (To clarify here, everyone was kinda stationed at the asylum in the book. Hence why Mina is here to begin with.)

But, in that moment of vulnerability, he hears a click of a gun. None other than Quincy Morris is staring down the barrel of a rifle, not seeing Ren as human but rather one of the enemy- A wolf was akin to Dracula, and thus Quincy saw Ren as a threat. Renfield gets past Quincy, but not before taking a shot to the ear. This never healed and he still has a hole near the tip of his right ear, even in human form.

He escapes the asylum. He saves Dracula. They do their whole song and dance between these events and the events of the 2023 movie.

Modern Day:

Renfield has chilled out over the years. His arrangement with Dracula is merely a job. He’s grown a bit bitter over time. What’s the fun of being a werewolf if it’s just an infinite game of fetch?

The only saving grace he has is the time around a full moon. You see, Dracula’s control directly relates to the phases of the moon. A full moon is a werewolf’s time, and thus Ren has time to be free. To be himself. To run free, enjoying the perks of being a werewolf. He truly does enjoy it! He just hates the stupid fetch game Dracula is constantly forcing him to play. All it does is put the blood of innocent people on his hands and leave him with more shredded clothes.

As you can probably guess, the time around a new moon is when Drac’s influence over Ren is at its peak. If Dracula wants something, he’s going to get it, and Renfield does not get a say in it. In many cases, he’s still fully aware when this happens. So he’s been forced to do some horrible things with no way of stopping himself.

Eventually, he finds the therapy group. And everything is going great. He meets Rebecca in the restaurant scene, just like in the movie (no, he doesn’t wolf out here because I think it’s better to save that for a later discovery). He starts taking care of himself more. He figures out that oversized sweaters are great for having something to wear in werewolf form. He figures out just how much life he’s been missing. He has hope for the first time in years.

But the full moon slowly wanes away. Dracula’s demands start coming through again. At first, he tries to ignore it. But the closer it gets to the new moon, the worse things get. And things start looking darker than they’ve ever looked before.

What about the bugs?

Yes! Well, he still does get a bit of power from their life force, but! It’s not just bugs he can gain power from! Pretty much anything that isn’t human will give him power, and the larger it is, the more power he gets. However, given that it has to be alive for him to get anything out of it, he doesn’t like consuming anything much larger than a rat or bird.

Notably, during the night, eating enough bugs or whatnot can give him a power surge needed to change forms. It’s oftentimes how he manages to do such on short notice, when he can’t take the time to mentally prepare himself for it. I love Renfield, but I’m sorry, he doesn’t escape the pain of shifting forms. Nobody does. That’s a rule across the board for many of my AUs haha- On that note, he also can’t transform during the day.

there’s not a lot that happens when you’re in a state that’s infinitely smaller than the state next to it- and perhaps that’s what jang hyunsik and esther bae were looking for when the newlyweds moved from the hustle and bustle of new york to a quieter, slightly slower paced new jersey to start a family. a digital marketer in the budding technological age and a real estate investor (it doesn’t sound like a real job to heejin even now, but it provided enough) raise three children with a yearning for life and success, only to be met with burgeoning disappointment by each one as the years go.

heejin, firmly situated in the middle, of the bae siblings, finds a love for music at a young age, perhaps from following her older brother around in lieu of a babysitter. she grows up with steady honor roll grades and a passion for musical theatre, dressing up and throwing her own shows in the suburban living room until her parents cave, signing her up for children’s theatre, and praying it would be enough to get the silly idea out of her head early on. and there, she blossoms; there’s something warm and comforting in putting on different hats and telling stories that gives her life. from tragedy to comedy, to documentary, there’s nothing that heejin doesn’t sign up for, working late weekends to afford the bus fare to and from the theater. there’s an extended family, a different one from her blood, that seems to understand the inner yearning for expression and the desire to love what you do, and to throw yourself in to storytelling in the way that heejin does.

for a while, her family is always front row, politely nodding and clapping and simply there for a passionate budding artist. her brother brings her flowers, mom kisses her forehead and tells her how well she did, and dad buys dinner at every show closing for her cast mates. there’s singing and dancing lessons to chauffeur to, and a dalliance in costume-making that heejin quickly realizes she’s not cut out for, and everything is good. she wins a community award and there’s talk that maybe, if she keeps it up throughout school, she could get a scholarship somewhere, or at the very least, accepted into one of the more prestigious universities.

until one day, it’s not the same sunshine and flowers it’s always been. a family meeting is called one morning during spring break, and mom announces she’s moving out, that it’s nobody’s fault, that divorce just happens sometimes, and people grow apart. they help her pack and while there’s not much discussion, dad stands in the doorway as the children watch the moving truck pull away, dooming them to a life split in two, and having to choose between those two constantly. there’s a new sense of responsibility that falls onto her shoulders, and it’s almost like now heejin is the responsible female adult in the house, and it’s up to her to make lunches, schedule appointments, and remind everyone to sit down at the dinner table too. her brother falls deeper into his music, and her father retreats into a bottle more days than not, while heejin and her sister have each other- until her sister decides to move too, and heejin can’t blame her for pursuing their mother, for yearning for a semblance of sameness in the craziness and upheaval of it all.

at fourteen, heejin leans on her best friend’s parents like they’re an anchor. the theater is a refuge, and her roles a protective shell to lose herself into. it’s only her brother that comes to see her these days, though it’s not every show now that he’s grown and his band is taking off, but it’s still with a flower, a hug, and a reminder that he’ll always show up for her.

at sixteen, a different kind of yearning hits- the urge to reconnect with her grandparents and the cousins that she hasn’t seen since they were all still little, since the yearly trips to seoul stopped. she’s browsing twitter and sees an international casting and signs without much of a second thought- the first being that something had to change. the company, like the golden king it must be named after, whisks her away like a convoluted savior to a life of grueling traineedom and a whisper of a promise of fame.

social media is the best way to keep in touch with all of her friends from home, and she carefully does her best to keep them updated without getting in trouble. it’s fun though, and she finds comfort making new friends under the guise of anonymity- of pretending to be jinhee, who by all means, is just a pretty girl who likes to connect with people. training goes well, but sooner, rather than later, the company goes under, eaten up by yet another, larger fish in entertainment pond.

until midas, heejin hadn’t really given any genuine thought to what exactly fame would mean. nonetheless, she works hard, even though it means that she doesn’t really get to do much theater anymore, and she does her best to show that she’s here, despite getting passed over every time. maybe the years of experience will mean something, she starts to think; after all, she wouldn’t still be around if they didn’t intend on using her somehow. the search for trainees for the new group begins, and heejin is thrust into competitiveness with 23 other girls, and it’s the kind of backstabbing, grueling experience nobody could predict. it’s hard to watch everyone slowly dwindle, the girls that deserve their chance so much more be turned away as someone, she continues forward, and forward, and

leader.

it’s announced not long after the lineup is confirmed, and at first heejin thinks it’s a mistake and they’ll tell her later that it was just a test. but it’s not, and she’s shouldered with a burden of responsibility for not only herself, but the other girls too, and the miracle seems like it’s chained to a weight of conditions.

girl code’s concepts are different, if her primary thought as they begin learning about the group. the luxurious high-end model image doesn’t quite sit right with heejin, but she’s certainly not going to turn her nose up at the opportunity that so many other trainees wanted. it’s a little weird to pose in chanel, to walk in brands that have cost infinitely more than she was comfortable with trying to grasp. but girl code’s popularity soars, so heejin can only assume something about it works. so she smiles, keeps her head down (or up, when they ask her to), and speaks for her group when they need her.

somehow, she’s remembered from those photos all those years ago, and as girl code weathers its first scandal, she has fans that stand by her (and many, her alone), and lend her strength as they all learn the logistics and manufacturing of the group- and just how lucky three of them are to have made it. success doesn’t happen as great as it did at debut, heejin knows it’s common that way, but riding the waves of a scandal as big as theirs, it’s hard to keep a braver face about it. she continues to be polite, carefully dodging questions about nepotism (though it must be nice, to not have had to worry so much, she thinks), and constantly reinforcing their group image, for better or worse.

thankfully, there’s work and plenty of projects for her in spite of it all, and it’s a little easier to breathe when it’s just girl code’s heejin in the room, and not the group as a whole. still, she loves her members and sees them as more than coworkers- which is easy when they’re all living in a dorm together anyway. heejin falls into a role she’s familiar with, comfortable, even, and it’s easy to divide chores between the girls, though heejin volunteers to do a lot of them- and cooking is her favorite hobby, so she has food critics to share with even in the late hours of the night when the urge strikes. it’s an experience starkly different from home, and it’s both comforting and different enough that it keeps her on her toes, and she can almost feel like maybe they’re just four girls in their twenties who live together because they want to, because they’re best friends and couldn’t think for a moment they would do anything differently. and when heejin indulges herself in this fantasy, the coldness of girl code’s public image is a little easier to swallow, and a little less of a mountain to climb.

A Review: Onmyoji and Tengu Eyes - Spirit Hunters of Tomoe (Vol. 1)

Plot

Paranormal incidents heat up when two mysterious men cross paths in Tomoe, a small town in Hiroshima with a long history of supernatural encounters. 

Misato Miyazawa is a strikingly beautiful young man with a troubled past. Born to a distinguished family of onmyoji—specialists in divination—Misato is no stranger to the occult. That’s why he jumps at the chance to join the Abnormal Disaster Unit in Tomoe’s Town Hall Crisis Management Division, a unit more commonly known as The Spirit Hunters. 

Enter Ryouji Karino, a fiery, handsome man with peculiar green and silver eyes. Working as a freelance monk and raised by a man claiming to be a tengu, Ryouji is by no means an average citizen. When he finds Misato in a sticky situation, he kindly steps in, and the mismatched pair end up living together. 

What dark mysteries will unravel before them as they attempt to confront paranormal happenings under the constraints of the government rules? 

Character Development

Misato wanted to be normal but coming from a family that’s like spirit hunter nobility made that really hard. Not only that, but he’s the son of his father’s mistress. He wasn’t treated well but realized his path was to also be a spirit hunter…just not one related to his father’s family. He is a soft spoken doormat of a person. Meeting Ryouji begins to change all of that as Ryouji accepts him and his “pet” (a name given to the spirit attached to him by Ryouji). Misato begins to accept all parts of himself, including the snake spirit attached to him. 

Ryouji looks like the epitome of an American wannabe gangster from the 90s with baggy pants and outrageous colors. He always wears sunglasses to hide his “Tengu Eyes” as he calls them. His eyes allow him to see both reality and the metaphysical (spirit) world simultaneously. Ryouji is a friendly sort that likes to help others….even if it means sacrificing his own life. At the same time, he’s a bit of a drifter taking odd jobs like bartending. He tries not to get too close to people as he’s been burned before. Ryouji doesn’t remember anything from before he was taken care of by the man claiming to be a tengu. Even though he’s a drifter, it feels more like he’s on the run. 

World-building

The world-building is contemporary with a merging of old town versus newer development in Tomoe. There are a lot of restless spirits which makes it easy for Misato to have a job. On the flip side, Ryouji works for the local real estate agency dealing with stuff as well. It’s an interesting difference in dynamic. 

The descriptors for the various locations is fabulous. It gives you enough that you can really picture everything. After all, the original concept for this series (found in the Afterward) is “Daily Life in Tomoe”. I thought that this book was a bit slow in developing until I read the afterward. If it’s supposed to be a slice-of-life story originally, then it would make sense for it to be slow. We get a lot of building relationships between Misato and his higher-ups. We learn how his department works along with some major players in town. It gives a great backdrop for a town that feels like a small village that is hiding larger secrets. 

One interesting part of the world-building is chapter five. The author doesn’t explain what is happening until the end so it can be a little confusing. From a previous chapter Misato is accidentally hit with an exorcism spell, which causes his snake to separate from him. This causes problems from Misato as they’ve become one being. So he goes in and out of consciousness between his own and the snake’s until they’re united again. From this experience, Misato begins to accept the snake as part of himself. 

Themes

While the theme for this one is a bit harder to find, I would suggest that it be finding your tribe. Misato and Ryouji have both been through a lot that makes them weary of developing deeper connections. So for both of them to find each other and begin a deep friendship is a big deal. 

Observations & Predictions

Based on the character development between Ryouji and Misato, I expect a strong friendship to form between them. We get hints of this towards the end when Misato feels like he’s been betrayed when Ryouji just disappears…at the same time an Inugami is on the loose (an inugami is a spirit of an animal—usually a dog— that’s buried to its neck, starved, and given a piece of meat just out of reach so that it can be beheaded. The dark angry spirit that’s born is forced into service to whomever would do this ritual until the spirit is powerful enough to eat the caster). 

Ryouji’s feelings are he’s become attached to the quiet housemate more than he realized. My favorite part is when he asks a question out loud to himself before facing down the Inugami (which isn’t his) during the climax and Misato answers calling him an idiot. We are left in this first novel with Ryouji crying that all his prep work to handle things alone is gone to waste because Misato’s snake eats the Inugami. 

This shows the strong bond forming between them. 

Besides seeing their relationship develop more, I would love to see their cases cross. I would also love a deeper dive into what it’s like for Ryouji when he takes on cases. We get some of this in extra stories at the end, but seeing the dichotomy and parallel from different sides would be awesome. 

I can expect more world-building from this author as they’re doing a great job with it. Though it does slow the story down (remember to keep in mind it’s supposed to be a slice-of-life). Another thing we can expect is that Misato will have to face his family again. My hope is that with help from Ryouji, he’ll have the courage to step up to the plate to do so. Ryouji has accepted him in a way that no one, not even his family has. That part should be interesting.
