Los Planetas’ arc, from noisy power poppers to south European alt-rock music titans, seemed to take barely any time at all. But that graceful ascendance, especially in hindsight, was deceptive: their prowess and staturetook time and was really very methodical. Steadily releasing an album every other year or so, first two Super 8 and Pop employed big hooks and bigger ambitions with a lo-fi, ultra-thin shoegaze sound; if these were sheets of sound, they were tin foil, ruffled, brittle, sharp. Una semana en el motor de un autobús [A Week in the Engine of a Bus] broke through – popularly, critically – with its delicate and tender noise pop, followed by consolidation with the steadily swollen pop tunes of Unidad de desplazamiento [Displacement Unit] and Encuentros con Entidades [Meetings With Entities]. Those were the peak years of power pop prowess, before the folkier diversion of Los Planetas contra la ley de la gravedad [Los Planetas against the law of gravity] and noisy encore La leyenda del espacio [The Legend of Space]. Los Planetas has released albums since, but they haven’t been a patch on these – but, then again, can any twenty-first century rock band compete with this run? I can think of very, very few with a seven-album blaze quite so prolific and substantial.
