 Introduction
India has fast become known as a global powerhouse in smartphone manufacturing, recently surpassing several nations to become the second-largest producer in the world. This growth has had a profound impact on its trade relationships, particularly with the United States. As India strengthens its position in electronics production, it also remains a key importer of various high-tech components and other essential products from the U.S.
In January 2022, the government set a aim to achieve electronics production of US$ 300 billion by 2025-26, with a strong focus on improving exports of smartphone
This blog explores how Indiaâs ascent in smartphone manufacturing influences its trade with the U.S., including an in-depth look at India's biggest imports from the USA and the most exported products from the U.S. to India. If you are a business owner, investor, or tech enthusiast, read on to understand how this evolving landscape presents new opportunities.
Indiaâs Growth as a Smartphone Manufacturing Hub
Why India?
Several factors have contributed to Indiaâs rapid growth in smartphone production:
Government Initiatives: Programs like Make in India and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme have encouraged global brands to set up manufacturing facilities.
Major Investments: Companies like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi have invested heavily in production plants in India.
Low Manufacturing Costs: Competitive labor costs and an expanding local supply chain have made India an attractive destination for smartphone manufacturing.
Rising Domestic Demand: With a large and growing consumer base, India offers an ideal market for smartphone makers.
Key Players in Indiaâs Smartphone Manufacturing
Some of the major companies driving Indiaâs rise as a smartphone manufacturing hub include:
Apple: The company now produces iPhones in India through its partners Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron.
Samsung: Operates one of the worldâs largest mobile manufacturing plants in Noida.
Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo: These Chinese giants manufacture and assemble their smartphones in India to meet local demand and exports.
Indiaâs Biggest Imports from the USA
While India has become self-sufficient in many aspects of smartphone manufacturing, it still relies on imports from the U.S. for crucial components and other high-value goods.
Top Imports from the USA
Electronic Components: India imports semiconductor chips, microprocessors, and other high-tech components vital for smartphone production.
Machinery and Equipment: Advanced manufacturing tools and robotics from the U.S. aid in improving efficiency and quality in production plants.
Oil and Gas: Despite its focus on renewable energy, India imports significant amounts of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S.
Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals: The U.S. is a key supplier of medical technology and high-end pharmaceutical products to India.
Defense Equipment: With increasing defense collaborations, India imports advanced defense technology and aircraft from American firms.
What are the Most Exported Products from the USA to India?
The U.S. exports a variety of products to India, supporting multiple industries. The most significant categories include:
1. Technology and Electronics
Semiconductors and integrated circuits
Computer hardware and software solutions
Telecom equipment
2. Energy Resources
Crude oil and LNG
Renewable energy equipment (solar panels, wind turbines)
3. Aerospace and Defense
Aircraft and aviation parts
Military defense technology
4. Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment
High-end diagnostic tools and imaging devices
Life-saving drugs and biotechnology solutions
5. Agricultural Products
Almonds, walnuts, and other nuts (the U.S. is a top supplier of these to India)
Soybeans and pulses
Apples and other fresh fruits
The Future of Indo-US Trade Relations
Indiaâs continued rise as a smartphone manufacturing giant will influence its trade patterns with the U.S. Some emerging trends include:
Shift Towards Local Component Manufacturing: India is investing in semiconductor fabs to reduce dependency on imports.
Enhanced Collaboration in Technology: Joint ventures and research partnerships between Indian and American firms are expected to grow.
Increasing Energy Trade: As India diversifies its energy sources, imports of U.S. oil and natural gas may continue to rise.
Conclusion
Indiaâs rapid ascent as the worldâs second-largest smartphone manufacturer has reshaped its trade dynamics with the U.S. While India remains a major importer of high-tech components, machinery, and energy resources from the U.S., it is also steadily moving towards self-reliance in electronics production.

Oh sorry the only reason I said Canada was because they are very diverse and is well known for letting immigrants into their country
Ah- I see what you mean. Canada is a country that is currently dependent on immigrants from what I'm finding. Sindria is very culturally diverse, and Sinbad takes in anyone and everyone possible (whether or not there's room for them). However, a country's stance on immigration probably isn't the best source of comparison here because many countries have had varying stances throughout history. Ohtaka left out "the new world" in general in Magi too. I think it's most likely a reference to how historically India was a center of trade with many immigrants just like Sindria is shown to be.
((Also, I was thinking more about the Hawaii idea from your last ask and Sindria is also build on a volcano, so it fits more than my original thought from just looking at the fawna. But I still think the island is mainly based on Brazil and Madagascar for the reasons I stated before.))
It was interesting to learn this aspect of Canada, so thank you for sharing that and inspiring me to do some research on something I otherwise wouldn't :D
Related ramblings under the cut
This topic reminds me of how a lot of people said that Imperial City in Legend of Korra was like 1900's USA, New York, Manhattan/Ellis Island because of the handling of immigration and technology in it, but it was actually based on Hong Kong. It's just that most of the English speakers (mainly Americans and Canadians from what I saw) watching the show didn't have exposure to the history of Hong Kong so didn't recognize it. I only recognized it because I studied Hong Kong in school (one month of study on 1910-1950 affects of imperialism and the industrial revolution on middle and south Asia). Since we know that the focus of Magi is the Middle East, it's important to keep that in mind when trying to figure out the references. Ohtaka left out "the new world" so whenever something reminded me of it, I took it as a sign to research the Middle East and see if there was something I was missing (and often there was). (She does reference the rest of Asia, and Africa and South America when she can. So also keep that in mind while researching for references.)
This question made me curious on what countries are the most culturally diverse or multiple cultural. For those interested, this list is what Google gave me:

So I will be doing some reading about these when I have a chance.

ABOUT INDIAN FOOD in USA
You will get know more about the best restaurants Around the world
INDIAN FOOD consists of a variety of regional and traditional cuisines native to India. Given the diversity in soil, climate, culture, ethnic groups, and occupations, these cuisines vary substantially and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruits.
Indian food is also heavily influenced by religion, in particular Hinduism and Islam, cultural choices.
Historical events such as invasions, trade relations, and colonialism have played a role in introducing certain foods to this country. The Columbian discovery of the New World brought a number of new vegetables and fruit to India. A number of these such as potatoes, tomatoes, chillies, peanuts, and guava have become staples in many regions of India.
INDIAN FOOD has shaped the history of international relations; the spice trade between India and Europe was the primary catalyst for Europe's Age of Discovery.
Spices were bought from India and traded around Europe and Asia. INDIAN FOOD has influenced other cuisines across the world, especially those from Europe (especially Britain), the Middle East, Southern African, East Africa, Southeast Asia, North America, Mauritius, Fiji, Oceania, and the Caribbean.
HISTORY OF INDIAN FOOD NON-VEGETARIAN
INDIAN FOOD reflects an 8,000-year history of various groups and cultures interacting with the Indian subcontinent, leading to a diversity of flavors and regional cuisines found in modern-day India. Later, trade with British and Portuguese influence added to the already diverse INDIAN FOOD.
After 9000 BCE, the first period of indirect contact between the Fertile Crescent and Indus Valley civilizations seems to have occurred due to the Neolithic Revolution and the diffusion of agriculture. Around 7000 BCE, agriculture spread from the Fertile Crescent to the Indus Valley, and wheat and barley began to be grown. Sesame and humped cattle were domesticated in the local farming communities.
Mehrgarh is one of South Asia's earliest sites with evidence of farming and herding. From circa 4500 toâ1900 BC the rulers of Lower Mesopotamia were Sumerians who spoke a non-Indo-European and non-Semitic language, may have initially come from India and may have been related to the original Dravidian population of India.
By 3000 BCE, turmeric, cardamom, black pepper and mustard were harvested in India.
From Around 2350 BCE the evidence for imports from the Indus to Ur in Mesopotamia have been found, as well as Clove heads which are thought to originate from the Moluccas in Maritime Southeast Asia were found in a 2nd millennium BC site in Terqa. Akkadian Empire records mention timber, carnelian and ivory as being imported from Meluhha by Meluhhan ships, Meluhha being generally considered as the Mesopotamian name for the Indus Valley Civilization.
VEDIC AGE
VEGETARIAN
The ancient Hindu text Mahabharata mentions rice and vegetable cooked together, and the word "pulao" or "pallao" is used to refer to the dish in ancient Sanskrit works, such as YÄjñavalkya Smáčti. Ayurveda, ancient Indian system of wellness, deals with holistic approach to the wellness, and it includes food, dhyana (meditation) and yoga.
ANTIQUITY
Early diet in India mainly consisted of legumes, vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy products, and honey.
Staple foods eaten today include a variety of lentils (dal), whole-wheat flour (aáčáča), rice, and pearl millet (bÄjra), which has been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent since 6200 BCE.
Over time, segments of the population embraced vegetarianism during the Ćramaáča movement while an equitable climate permitted a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains to be grown throughout the year.
A food classification system that categorised any item as saatvic, raajsic, or taamsic developed in Yoga tradition. The Bhagavad Gita proscribes certain dietary practices.
Consumption of beef is taboo, due to cows being considered sacred in Hinduism.[14] Beef is generally not eaten by Hindus in India except for Kerala, parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the north-east.
PICKLES
FOOD MENTIONED IN ANECIENT INDIAN SCRIPTURE
While many ancient Indian recipes have been lost in history, one can look at ancient texts to see what was eaten in ancient and pre-historic India.
Barleyâ(known as Yava in both Vedic and Classical Sanskrit) is mentioned many times in Rigveda and other Indian scriptures as one of the principal grains in ancient India
Betel leafâprimary use is as a wrapper for the chewing of areca nut or tobacco, where it is mainly used to add flavour; may also be used in cooking, usually raw, for its peppery taste
Breadfruitâfritters called jeev kadge phodi in Konkani or kadachakka varuthath in Malayalam are a local delicacy in coastal Karnataka and Kerala
Chickpeasâpopular dishes are made with chickpea flour, such as mirchi bajji and mirapakaya bajji
Curdâa traditional yogurt or fermented milk product, originating from the Indian subcontinent, usually prepared from cow's milk, and sometimes buffalo milk, or goat milk
Figs âcultivated from Afghanistan to Portugal, also grown in Pithoragarh in the Kumaon hills of India; from the 15th century onwards, also grown in areas including Northern Europe and the New World
Gheeâa class of clarified butter that originated in ancient India, commonly used in the Indian subcontinent, Middle-Eastern cuisine, traditional medicine, and religious rituals
Grape wine âfirst-known mention of grape-based wines in India is from the late 4th-century BC writings of Chanakya
Honey âthe spiritual and supposed therapeutic use of honey in ancient India was documented in both the Vedas and the Ayurveda texts
Mangoâthe Jain goddess Ambika is traditionally represented as sitting under a mango tree
Mustard âbrown mustard is a spice that was cultivated in the Indus Valley civilization and is one of the important spices used in the Indian subcontinent today
Pomegranateâin some Hindu traditions, the pomegranate (Hindi: anÄr) symbolizes prosperity and fertility, and is associated with both Bhoomidevi (the earth goddess) and Lord Ganesha (the one fond of the many-seeded fruit)
Riceâcultivated in the Indian subcontinent from as early as 5,000 BC
Rice cakeâquite a variety are available
Rose appleâmainly eaten as a fruit and also used to make pickles (chambakka achar)
Saffron âalmost all saffron grows in a belt from Spain in the west to Kashmir in the east
Salt âconsidered to be a very auspicious substance in Hinduism and is used in particular religious ceremonies like house-warmings and weddings; in Jainism, devotees lay an offering of raw rice with a pinch of salt before a deity to signify their devotion, and salt is sprinkled on a person's cremated remains before the ashes are buried
Sesame oil âpopular in Asia, especially in Korea, China, and the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, where its widespread use is similar to that of olive oil in the Mediterranean

Middle Ages to the 16th Century
VEG DUM BIRYANI
During the Middle Ages, several Indian dynasties were predominant, including the Gupta dynasty. Travel to India during this time introduced new cooking methods and products to the region, including tea.
India was later invaded by tribes from Central Asian cultures, which led to the emergence of Mughlai cuisine, a mix of Indian and Central Asian cuisine. Hallmarks include seasonings such as saffron.
Colonial Period
The Portuguese and British during their rule introduced cooking techniques such as baking, and foods from the New World and Europe.
The new-world vegetables popular in cuisine from the Indian subcontinent include tomato, potato, sweet potatoes, peanuts, squash, and chilli. Most New World vegetables such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, Amaranth, peanuts and cassava based Sago are allowed on Hindu fasting days. Cauliflower was introduced by the British in 1822. In the late 18th/early 19th century, an autobiography of a Scottish Robert Lindsay mentions a Sylheti man called Saeed Ullah cooking a curry for Lindsay's family. This is possibly the oldest record of INDIAN FOOD in the United Kingdom.
INGREDIENTS
Staple foods of INDIAN FOOD include pearl millet (bÄjra), rice, whole-wheat flour (aáčáča), and a variety of lentils, such as masoor (most often red lentils), tuer (pigeon peas), urad (black gram), and moong (mung beans). Lentils may be used whole, dehuskedâfor example, dhuli moong or dhuli uradâor split. Split lentils, or dal, are used extensively, Some pulses, such as channa or cholae (chickpeas), rajma (kidney beans), and lobiya (black-eyed peas) are very common, especially in the northern regions. Channa and moong are also processed into flour (besan).
Many Indian dishes are cooked in vegetable oil, but peanut oil is popular in northern and western India, mustard oil in eastern India, and coconut oil along the western coast, especially in Kerala and parts of southern Tamil Nadu, Gingelly (sesame) oil is common in the south since it imparts a fragrant, nutty aroma.
In recent decades, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, and soybean oils have become popular across India, Hydrogenated vegetable oil, known as Vanaspati ghee, is another popular cooking medium, Butter-based ghee, or deshi ghee, is used commonly.
Many types of meat are used for Indian cooking, but chicken and mutton tend to be the most commonly consumed meats. Fish and beef consumption are prevalent in some parts of India, but they are not widely consumed except for coastal areas, as well as the north east.
The most important and frequently used spices and flavourings in INDIAN FOOD are whole or powdered chilli pepper (mirch, introduced by the Portuguese from Mexico in the 16th century), black mustard seed (sarso), cardamom (elaichi), cumin (jeera), turmeric (haldi), asafoetida (hing), ginger (adrak), coriander (dhania), and garlic (lasoon).
One popular spice mix is garam masala, a powder that typically includes seven dried spices in a particular ratio, including black cardamom, cinnamon (dalchini), clove (laung), cumin (jeera), black peppercorns, coriander seeds and anise star.
Each culinary region has a distinctive garam masala blendâindividual chefs may also have their own. Goda masala is a comparable, though sweet, spice mix popular in Maharashtra. Some leaves commonly used for flavouring include bay leaves (tejpat), coriander leaves, fenugreek (methi) leaves, and mint leaves. The use of curry leaves and roots for flavouring is typical of Gujarati and South INDIAN FOOD.

Indian PM Modi heads to US in mission to dodge tit-for-tat tariff battle
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived on a visit to Washington, where he will meet US President Donald Trump and discuss with him the development of the partnership between the two countries.
Modi wrote on X:
âLanded in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.â
He said India and the US will âcontinue to work closely together for the benefit of people and for a better future for our planet.â
One of the first contacts during Modiâs visit to Washington was his meeting with US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The Indian prime minister said he discussed with her âvarious aspects of India-US friendship, of which she has always been an ardent supporter.â
As the South Asian republicâs foreign ministry earlier reported, Modiâs stay in Washington will last two days. During his visit, he will hold bilateral talks with Trump as well as at the delegation level. Trade, defence, energy, migration, technology are on the agenda.
India-US relations
India is keen to strengthen trade relations with the US, which is its largest trading partner. According to Reuters, bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $118 billion in 2023/24, with Indiaâs trade surplus with America totalling $32 billion.
New Delhi also intends to make it easier for its citizens to obtain visas for skilled workers. India views the US as a partner in its efforts to contain China. In this regard, Trump and Modi, in a telephone conversation, stressed their commitment to the Quadrilateral Dialogue (QUAD) grouping of the US and India, as well as Australia and Japan. India will host QUAD leaders later this year.
The White House announced the invitation to the Indian prime minister to visit the US hours after a US military plane flew to India to bring back deported migrants to the country. Before the 2016 election, Trump included India among the countries he accused of stealing American jobs. However, Modi and Trump had a good relationship during the current US presidentâs first legislature.
During the current election campaign, Trump called India a âvery big trade abuserâ and vowed to use tariffs on imports to redress the imbalance. Trump has also threatened the BRICS group of countries, which includes India, with 100 per cent duties on imports if they try to replace the dollar in international trade.

Indiaâs Wheat Production and Export Landscape
India ranks as the worldâs second-largest wheat producer, trailing only China. States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh contribute over 90% of the countryâs output. However, recent years have seen a shift in priorities. In 2024, wheat export from India dropped to $56 billion, a stark decline from previous years. This reduction stems from government policies prioritizing domestic consumption over exports since May 2022. Despite this, India continues to supply wheat to nations like Bhutan, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, and Indonesia under specific agreements.
The outlook for 2025 remains optimistic, with opportunities to expand into new markets and strengthen trade ties. Factors such as improved irrigation, high-yield seed varieties, and diversified wheat types (including durum and bread wheat) position India to meet global demand.
Wheat Export Data and Market Trends for 2025
According to wheat export data, India shipped 5,352 cargoes of wheat flour between March 2023 and February 2024, a 425% year-on-year increase for February 2024 alone. Key markets like the UAE, the USA, and Australia dominate wheat flour export from India, while Turkey, Ukraine, and India itself lead global wheat flour exports.
Despite restrictions imposed in 2022 to stabilize domestic supply, the government authorized limited exports to address food security needs in partner nations. For instance, India approved 2 lakh tonnes of export of flour from India to Nepal in 2025, reflecting strategic trade alliances.
Key Destinations for Wheat Flour Export from India
The top importers of Indian wheat flour include:
Sri Lanka ($1.05 million)
United Arab Emirates ($664 thousand)
Italy ($265 thousand)
Turkey ($50 thousand)

These countries rely on Indiaâs high-quality, competitively priced wheat products. The export of flour from India also extends to niche markets in Africa and Southeast Asia, driven by trade liberalization and government initiatives.
Understanding Wheat HS Codes for International Trade
Accurate classification using wheat HS codes is critical for smooth customs clearance and compliance. Below are the primary HS codes for wheat and related products:
100111: Durum wheat seeds
100119: Durum wheat (excluding seeds)
110100: Wheat flour or meslin
110311: Wheat groats and meal
11010000: Specific HS code for wheat flour
These codes streamline the wheat export from India, ensuring exporters meet international standards. Businesses must stay updated on regulatory changes to avoid delays.

Navigating the Export of Flour from India: Challenges and Opportunities
While the wheat flour export from India sector is promising, exporters face hurdles such as fluctuating domestic policies, rising input costs, and logistical bottlenecks. The 2022 export ban highlighted the fragility of relying on volatile government regulations. Additionally, challenges like labor shortages and small land holdings impact scalability.
