This is a quote pulled from the TED Talk “I got 99 problems… and palsy is just one” performed by Maysoon Zayid. It was one of the many impactful statements she said throughout the 14 minutes because it tackles head on the underrepresentation of people with disabilities in entertainment, despite being the largest minority in the world.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buRLc2eWGPQ
In this TED Talk, Maysoon Zayid is a female identifying comedian who discusses her life and experiences of discrimination in the entertainment industry while being a Muslim-American woman with cerebral palsy (CP). Maysoon shared an experience she had while in college where an actress without cerebral palsy was cast for a role as a female with CP over Maysoon, who is a female with CP. When she asked the head of the department, they told her that it was because they were worried she wouldn't be able to do the stunts. She replied "If I can't do the stunts, then so can't my character". There have been so many examples in the entertainment industry of able-bodied actors playing (usually visible) disabled roles. And it all comes down to employment opportunities being taken away from individuals with disabilities. There is already a small pool of opportunity for characters with disabilities and majority of those roles still are played by individuals without those disabilities. Because of this, there are fewer opportunities to create more positive images of disability in the media and everyday life because none are being portrayed. Therefore, there needs to be a greater conscious effort to create more inclusive platforms. Maybe then there will be less tolerance and threshold to foster hate against the “other”.

Messages To Women
We need to be and raise women who are confident and self-reliant; however, the messages we send to women in our society are harmful.  How are we raising women that are harmful to our society you may ask. What are we specifically doing that is hurting our society?
The messages we verbally speak and show through our actions are ‘damaging’ all of us; men and women alike.
What we as women hear or…

Writing my Thriller novel.
Writing my Thriller novel.
After I wrote my memoirs “Breaking Free:45 Years In The Wrong Body”, I wasn’t sure if I would go on to write anything else as I had not really entertained the notion that I was a real writer, but then something changed in me.People began telling me how what I had written touched them, that they couldn’t put my book down, then I read the reviews of my book on Amazon, I was blown away by the…

Hi friends of CYCLISTA ZINE, . My name is Christina (she/her), CZ founder and I wanted to introduce myself. I’m Kuwaissu Native American and Xicana. I grew up in CA between ancestral lands in Tejon and S.Central LA (occupied Tongva territory) and spent my college years in San Francisco and Oakland (occupied Ohlone territory). I currently live in NY, Wappinger Territory and work in data and patient advocacy. I’m fairly active in my local bike community and organize a women’s cycling group. . Active transportation was always a practice of mine, a means of financial necessity and green living which drew me to study Sustainable Urban Development at UC Berkeley. During Occupy, I grew passionate about cycling as a tool for environmental justice and began advocating for safer streets as a writer and community activist. . Through years of writing mainstream cycling perspectives, I had to finally confront my desire to put social justice as the center of this mode of transit and activity if it was ever going to be a meaningful tool to address climate change, safer streets, and equitable transit oriented development. . These perspectives are not the norm in mainstream cycling culture. I grew apathetic in advocacy, industry, and media, thinking they will never center diverse perspectives of marginalized communities who bike, so CYCLISTA Zine came to life. . Our goal is to inspire community building and organization by giving you representation, a digital community, and the tools to do the groundwork. . Today is our submissions deadline and I wanted to thank those who have contributed. I’ve been so moved by your stories and lessons. Humbled that you allow me to hold space for you. Thank you, thank you 💫 . Our goal is to have the first issue “Our Bikes, Our Spaces” out by mid October. So excited to share with you! . #cyclistazine #socialjustice #mobilityjustice #urbanism #resist #bikediversity #bikeshare #bikesafety #racialjustice #inclusivefeminism #urbantheory #equality #resist #currentevents #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #bikelife #ciclismo #zines #cyclingzine #representationmatters https://www.instagram.com/p/B2XxWCVFvAk/?utm_medium=tumblr

From the article "The statuette—which costs an estimated $500 to $900 to create, depending on the price of gold—will only net you $10 if you try to sell it back.
But winning an Oscar can come with some indirect earnings. According to 2015 estimates by Hollywood agents, taking home an Oscar can cause a pay increase of about 20 percent for the winner’s next project. Unfortunately, though, this comes with a big gender pay gap. Male Oscar winners are estimated to take home about $3.9 million more, while females can only expect about a $500,000 bonus."
I'm aware that this is more than a little extra... like a LOT extra, but I went down the internet rabbit hole and made this infographic because I'm furloughed and have too much time. I think this demonstrates nicely that there is both a complete lack of diversity for Hollywood actresses and a massive pay inequality. I know Scarlett Johansson will probably get by ok on her $56 mil, but there are clearly multiple issues on display.

If anyone wants to confirm, these numbers were pulled from Forbes' 2019 Highest Paid articles:

Why I support women's rights
I support women's rights because the only way I can get someone to leave me alone on social media is by saying "I have a boyfriend"
I support women's rights because I have to carry my keys between my fingers when I walk home in the dark, despite only living five minutes away from work
I support women's rights because I don't feel safe accepting a drink from someone in a club unless I see the bartender make it and hand it directly to me.
I support women's rights because my younger cousin shouldn't be discouraged from playing football because "it's a boys' sport"
I support women's rights because so many male patients at my job won't listen to my fully qualified female boss who spent six years at university but will listen to my unqualified male colleague when looking for medical advice
I support women's rights because I'm fed up of paying "the pink tax"
I support women's rights because sanitary products are still classed as luxury items
I support women's rights because I, and every other woman - binary or non-binary, should be able to walk home alone in the dark without worrying about being raped, harassed, or assaulted
I support women's rights because in some countries women still aren't allowed to have control over their own bodies
I support women's rights because trans women and non-binary women still aren't universally accepted
But wait. These are just the experiences I've encountered.
I support women's rights because 650 million women alive today were married before they turned eighteen, with reports suggesting one girl every two seconds becomes a child bride.
I support women's rights because roughly 85,000 women are sexually assaulted in the UK each year and only 15% of them feel comfortable going to the police about it.
I support women's rights because statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine show that 38% of all murdered women are killed by their partners.
I support women's rights because of all the women killed globally in 2012, it is thought that half of them were killed by their partner or relative.
I support women's rights because only 18 out of 173 countries have specific legislation addressing sexual harassment in public places.
I support women's rights because one in eight trans people have been assaulted at work by either a colleague or customer in the last year.
I support women's rights because it's 2020 and we're still having these conversations.
