Hi friends of CYCLISTA ZINE, . My name is Christina (she/her), CZ founder and I wanted to introduce myself. I’m Kuwaissu Native American and Xicana. I grew up in CA between ancestral lands in Tejon and S.Central LA (occupied Tongva territory) and spent my college years in San Francisco and Oakland (occupied Ohlone territory). I currently live in NY, Wappinger Territory and work in data and patient advocacy. I’m fairly active in my local bike community and organize a women’s cycling group. . Active transportation was always a practice of mine, a means of financial necessity and green living which drew me to study Sustainable Urban Development at UC Berkeley. During Occupy, I grew passionate about cycling as a tool for environmental justice and began advocating for safer streets as a writer and community activist. . Through years of writing mainstream cycling perspectives, I had to finally confront my desire to put social justice as the center of this mode of transit and activity if it was ever going to be a meaningful tool to address climate change, safer streets, and equitable transit oriented development. . These perspectives are not the norm in mainstream cycling culture. I grew apathetic in advocacy, industry, and media, thinking they will never center diverse perspectives of marginalized communities who bike, so CYCLISTA Zine came to life. . Our goal is to inspire community building and organization by giving you representation, a digital community, and the tools to do the groundwork. . Today is our submissions deadline and I wanted to thank those who have contributed. I’ve been so moved by your stories and lessons. Humbled that you allow me to hold space for you.
