Concept: an au where Paul Rowland's abuse causes Charles to go deaf/severely hard of hearing as a young kid, old enough that he doesn't have trouble speaking aside from words he didn't have an occasion to hear
When he dies, he doesn't tell Edwin right away and attempts to go by on lip reading like he's been doing most of his life because he was never taught BSL anyway. One day this lands him and Edwin in trouble and Charles is forced to confess when Edwin scolds him for not listening.
Edwin is absolutely horrified by the state of things and immediately insists he and Charles learn BSL together, which takes them some time but hey, they're ghosts, if there's anything they have plenty of it's time
It's touch and go for a long while. Charles grows more comfortable with his deafness, and he enjoys having this semi secret language with his best mate, but clients have a bad tendency to hear him speak and behave as if he were a regular hearing person
This happens often enough that by the time Crystal comes along, Charles has developed the habit of pretending he can't talk around strangers. True, it forces Edwin to be the interpreter all the time, and there's always the occasional client who tries to be downright rude, but the fact that people tend to underestimate Charles' intelligence when they realize he doesn't speak came in handy more than once: they stick with it
Crystal does her best to communicate directly with Charles, aided by no small amount of writing (she can recognize Charles' hand by week 3) and slow progress in BSL thanks to the books Edwin lends her. She doesn't always find it convenient but it's not like there's anyone to blame for it so she adapts and learns
Then one day she and Charles end up kidnapped in a basement together with their hands tied, which makes communication impossible, as Crystal for some reason really struggles with lip reading. She's getting close to despair and wondering how the fuck they're going to plan for anything now, when Edwin manages to sneak into the room (by way of he's needed for the plot) and asks for a sitrep
Crystal looks so offended when Charles starts speaking it makes the boys pause to laugh at her a bit. They explain afterwards and it takes her a bit but she gets it, and eventually even admits it was helpful that one time
And of course, eventually she learns enough BSL to communicate with Charles more easily, and they may or may not use it to trash talk her parents when she takes a breather in the bathroom during one of their social events

Today, I want to talk about Charles and what is likely his own struggle with suppression and denial. Now I know I’m not the only one rooting for Charles and Edwin (Chedwin???), but I will put a disclaimer here that I will be pleased with whatever route their relationship takes. Because not every tale of unrequited queer love ends with a happily ever after, and the confession and the response from both Charles and Edwin was so beautiful and graceful that I can’t even be mad about it. So with that said, let’s talk about it.
Edwin and his case of suppressing his queer identity is blatant. He’s from the prim and proper era where queerness is so taboo that Edwin doesn’t even say “I’m not gay” but rather, “he is a boy and I’m a boy.” He’s likely spent all his existence not even knowing queer terms, but only that such things were unspoken and unacceptable. That it’s not even possible. However, he’s easily clockable and always has been. He is prissy and “unmanly” and is the spitting image of repression.
With that in mind, it makes it easy to overlook Charles. Who is a lot more modern compared to Edwin and less innocent (the handjob debacle), but we have to remember that he’s still pretty far removed from modern times. His story speaks to me in a way different from Edwin because in Edwin’s times, you simply did not speak of it. Charles is from the times of the front for gay liberation and the AIDS crisis (forgive me for not knowing much UK queer history), the point being that it was no longer hiding. But that means that it would be actively persecuted and snuffed out instead of swept under the rug. He’s an 80’s punk. You can’t tell me he doesn’t know anything.
His father reminds me of my own Uncle, who had three sons and thought a heavy hand was the best way to raise them. Now, all three of them are addicts in their 30’s with little accomplishments, but the story of my cousin is a sad one. His childhood could be summed up as a failure to “beat the gay” out of someone. I’d imagine Charles’ father would be quite similar. As of right now, we don’t have full reasons why Charles’ dad would beat his son so severely.
But aside from the idea that Charles would have had any gay beaten out of him, Charles was likely too caught up in his own survival to even consider the complexities of things like sexual orientation. It likely never crossed his mind. And it’s likely a sign of the times he was in, because while the 80’s are closer to now than the 1910’s, they still are far off in a progressive sense.
I’m curious to see the development of Charles in the next season, to see how he navigates these complexities, if at all.

See, I think Charles’ annoyance and frustration with the Cat King really was just pure protectiveness and not any kind of jealousy - it’s understandable, because Edwin is not telling him what happened even though something clearly did, which is not typical for them. Edwin doesn’t usually hide things like this! Of course he’s worried!
Charles’ reaction to Monty, on the other hand, is difficult to explain in a way that isn’t jealousy. You could say he’s being protective again, but Charles shows no sign of distrust in Monty, and had no idea of who Monty was or that he might betray them - he was actually very chill with him, except in a select few specific scenes. You could say he just doesn’t like him because he got brushed off during their first meeting, but not only does that not seem like Charles at all, it also doesn’t make sense, since, again, in most instances, Charles is genuinely friendly and is happy when Monty compliments him and seems to have come around to liking him (it completely flies over his head that this is a petty jab at Edwin on Monty’s part but oh well hahaha). You could say it changes up their status quo a bit and that bothers Charles. I do think this bothers him a bit, but I think, unlike Edwin, Charles’ fear and frustration here is directed more at situations (the Cat King whisking him away for several hours, as an example) than others. He’s sociable and likes being able to talk to new people. There’s absolutely no way he’d begrudge Edwin doing the same - and he doesn’t… with Niko. Edwin and Niko hit it off and become very close and that never bothers Charles at all. He’s incredibly endeared to her, just like the rest, and for the most part, he’s chill with Monty too, and smiles pretty knowingly when Edwin confesses to him having awakened some feelings. The only exceptions, where he shows definite annoyance, are when Monty first shows up and gets really in Edwin’s personal space to show him the astrology chart he made, and when Edwin is so sucked into the book Monty gave him that he doesn’t hear that Charles is talking to him, to which he annoyedly says that they seem to have been “spending a lot of time together”.
You could say he’s unused to having anyone get in Edwin’s personal space like that, but, again, Niko. She’s very tactile with him and he doesn’t seem to mind all that much; they spend time together watching things. If it was just someone getting close with Edwin in general, not only would that be weirdly possessive for the character, but it would also mean he would show discomfort with anyone getting close, I think. Does Charles see Monty as more of a potential threat than Niko, seeing as he knows her and her personality and doesn’t know Monty? Well, maybe, but again, Charles shows no sign of distrusting Monty at all.
Monty is a boy. Okay. So something about seeing Edwin so close to a boy that is not him, getting lost in thought over something this boy gave him, really rubs Charles the wrong way. Charles appears to catch on just as quickly as anyone else that there is something (or it looks like something) between Edwin and Monty. He is not surprised when Edwin comes out to him in episode 6, and in fact, seems to have just been waiting for him to verbalize it. He smiles and is not bothered at all by Edwin showing (what he thinks is) a romantic interest in Monty - he just doesn’t like it when Monty clearly shows a romantic interest in Edwin. Um. Well. Well.
Charles is jealous. I really don’t know what else to say.
Look, when I first watched this show, I actually didn’t want them to end up together romantically - I love the idea of one having fallen in love with another who does not reciprocate and the two of them still loving each other just as much. That Edwin’s confession made them closer instead of making things awkward is such a beautiful outcome to this build up and I absolutely love it. However. On my two rewatches, I caught a lot more little details, and I think it would be very strange if the show did not follow up on this. That, plus the deliberate quality of these “jealousy” moments where the camera focuses on him, Charles’ Orpheus coding throughout the show, the fact that Edwin’s arc was far more about realizing his feelings for Charles specifically than just coming to terms with his sexuality, and that even the actors admit that Charles’ response to the confession kind of left things open, it really seems to me like the path leads to a romantic endgame for them, or at the very least, that this possibility will be explored in more depth.
**This is just my reading of it. Please do not use this post as a gotcha for anyone who loves them as a platonic duo or people who really love Crystal and Charles together (because let’s face it, they’re super cute too). I’m just doing my rambles. As per usual.
#listen this got really long and I’m sorry but I wanted to be sure I covered all my bases because#I flat out hate the old argument of ‘it (romance) is the only possible explanation! with regards to strong bonds#because it so often invalidates strong platonic expressions of love#but… *gestures above*#they’re going to need to address this at some point I think#I really hope though that if the relationship becomes more romantic#that this does not happen in season 2 but in season 3 or something#make it a good build and emphasize the importance of their existing platonic bond#I want their bond to continue to change and grow closer via their friendship first before evolving into romantic tension :)#(also I have faith in these writers but I’ll always be worried about what happens to Crystal with all this. pls don’t cast her aside…)#the smart thing would be to have Crystal have more of the main plot action and Charles more of the feelings arc#for season 2. that’s what I’m hoping#not just any romance or jealousy for Charles but also feelings around his family and dad and his wants and fears and all that#storyrambles#this got away from me again haha#should I use my analysis tag? does this count??? …I’m using it. ->#call me ace detective the way I am ace. and also a detective.#dead boy detectives#I also love the idea of a canon gay couple in an overall queer narrative because that’s beautiful#please I want it to happen#charles rowland#edwin payne#payneland#dbda meta#dbda spoilers

Gotta yap about my Dead boy boyfriends sorry chat
Like
I physically need to talk about them but my friends haven't watched the show yet (WATCH IT OTS SO GREAT AAHHHHH)
Some short imagines/ short scenario type of stuff? Idk
Not proofread (atp I don't know what that word means ngl I never proofread my studf)
It is currently 11pm for me, I am tired, this probably sucks but I do not care actually
☆ Imagine meeting the two for the first time and you genuinely cannot speak because they're both a little too gorgeous, I mean, Edwin slays his outfit and Charles has the biggest brown eyes. Pretty boys fr
★ I just think that, if you're another ghost, Edwin would like you more at first, if you're alive, Charles would (because of the whole Charles hates being dead thing and Edwin doesn't like being around the living)
☆ In this scenario, let's play with you being alive and (mostly) well. Involved in one of their cases, maybe, or you went into Jennys shop to get meat or something (if you don't eat meat pretend you're cooking a meal for a friend or something)
★ Probably immediately you kinda notice a strange aura (totally not Charles staring you down because he's never seen someone as cool and swag as you) - and let's be honest you aren't even surprised when you meet Crystal and she's looking at the corner all weird.
☆ meeting them again however, you probably just had some near death experience (maybe you wandered into a haunted house, or you somehow got involved in the whole Esther business) and you probably don't even care that ghosts exist because yeah, kinda checks out
★ Charles is probably immediately on your heel (Edwin is just the tiniest bit jealous) asking you all sorts of questions (Edwin is just the tiniest bit interested as well)
☆ getting to know them better, Edwin finds he quite likes yapping about cases with you (my autistic ghost boy needs someone that ACTUALLY listens to what he says) he will be overjoyed if he starts talking about a case and you go "Oh wasn't that the one where.." because yes!! It was that case! You remembered!! Good job!!!
★ I feel like the whole relationship would come along naturally at some point. Just you complaining how you can't sleep because your pillow is too warm and both of them offering to stay with you since ghosts are pretty cold
☆ they have the mutual agreement that they're somewhat sharing your affection since you give both of them the same. They'll just have conversations like "did you already tell them [...]" and "Oh, yeah I did could you do [...] for them?" Already being fully in the mindset of 'we can and will make this work with three people'
★ I think Charles would actually have a more difficult time when the relationship officially starts though. He just has so much affection for you and Edwin that he's almost bursting, but Edwin doesn't always like touch so he has ti be careful and look for the signs and you actually have to keep yourself up and cared for instead of being able to cuddle 24/7
☆ Just a silly boy struggling with not kissing and hugging both his partners at all times (though he has two hands, and will be the middle part whenever the three of you walk somewhere.)
☆ Edwin is more a acts of service type of guy while Charles, obviously, is big on physical touch, so whenever Charles holds you back from doing laundry or the dishes, Edwin will do it for you so you can chill out
★ doesn't mean you don't do things for the boys, though. You regularly get books for Edwin (which he's happier about that he shows) and always give Charles the chance to talk to you without any judgement (same goes for Edwin, though he doesn't use that offer as often as Charles)
☆ Imagine Charles rescuing Edwin from hell and that night the three cuddle up with each other even though Edwin and Charles don't sleep, just so you can hold both of them to make sure they're still there and well

It’s time for episode 6. I always start these thinking I won’t find much and it’ll be a short one, and then I’ll just keep finding details and the posts get pretty long
The recap editing strikes again. Immediately after Edwin tells Monty “I wasn’t talking about you” we get a shot of his hug with Charles
There are some colorful glasses up on the division between the spaces of Niko’s room (I don’t know the name of that thing) and I can just imagine Niko asking Jenny for a ladder to put them up there. Also there is a blue butterfly glued above her closet door
The sign with the name of Tragic Mick’s shop has a little fish jumping over it, which is really cute
When they first arrive at the shop and are talking with Mick, there is a figure on one of the shelves that kind of looks like a polar bear with a red dress
Niko’s card is pink and has like a cute bunny thing decoration. All of her things are adorable, I love her
It’s really funny just how terrible at lying all of these kids are. They are almost implausibly bad at it, and it’s always hilarious how the others just shrug and go with it
Speaking of, Monty flipping his hair and putting on a dramatic tone to tell them that his good friend has a problem is just peak. This boy is amazing, and his lying abilities fit right in with al the others (to his credit, none of the main kids realized he was a crow before the Cat King reveals the truth, so I guess it’s working for him)
The names for their potential cases are hilarious: Phantom Yodeler, Undead Milkman, Doppelganger Gang, Sentient Pants, Restless Piano Syndrome. (Can’t really make out what the last 2 say, but I can make out the words Cricket Wicket in one, and Gargoyle in the other)
Edwin has a little smile after Niko tells him he looks nice <3
I just realized that the reason Crystal’s attempt at pretending to read the tree is so bad is because she cannot tell that her eyes go white every time she uses her powers
Monty is immediately concerned when Charles says the elemental consumes ghosts. I love how clearly you can see the different emotions on his face, how you can tell the instant he starts to have second thoughts about this plan, even if he is still going to go through with it for revenge (for a little while at least)
Edwin’s science glasses are just for the drama/aesthetic, right? All of the others are standing right there by him without any glasses, so it’s not like they are for protection. Also you have to love the fact that he passes Charles the vial to throw it even though I’m sure it would have been the same if Edwin himself had done it? Charles doesn’t throw it too far, so it’s not like it required a lot of strength or anything. It’s just the way they do things, I guess. Edwin creates the potions, Charles throws them. Brains and brawn
I could be wrong, but I think that when the Night Nurse and Kashi are talking you can hear Angie’s heartbeat in the background
After Charles breaks all of David’s mirrors, the ground of Crystal’s mind place is full of glass (I think it wasn’t before, but my memory isn’t great so I could be wrong about this one too)
I’ve been thinking about since the episode 1 rewatch, but I think it’s interesting that none of the kids (minus Niko) made the connection between Monty the boy and Monty the witches familiar, given the way Esther yells Monty’s name after that first confrontation when they rescued Becky Aspen. I know it’s a wild connection to make, but Monty isn’t that common of a name, and they all were very much there when she yelled “Monty, shut up” at the screaming crow inside of her house. I don’t know, I think it could have been funny for Charles to fixate on Edwin’s new pal having the same name as Esther’s crow, and then for the others to dismiss it as jealousy. It would be hilarious, and it’d give Charles a chance to be all “I told you so” after the reveal
All of the chairs around the table by Crystal’s tree are a little different
Petition to make Crystal part of the Brawn team in the agency, because the way she fights Esther is vicious. She should get to beat the shit out of more enemies next season
Charles sounds like he’s been crying right after Crystal rescues the two of them. His voice is all watery and broken even though he’s smiling
One of Niko’s cushions on her windowsill has an octopus on it
Ghosts don’t have reflections, but they do have shadows. I guess shadows would be harder to remove irl? I noticed the shadows during the scene where they’re thinking of a name for Crystal’s move
The Night Nurse says she’s been working at that post for over two million hours, which means (according to google) that she’s been at the Lost and Found department for almost 230 years. No wonder she’s so done with everyone’s bullshit. Imagine working the same shitty job for over 200 years

When Niko started her production business, it was pretty much just a way to organize the projects that she and her friends were making. Jenny, who'd been her de facto guardian since Niko's dad had died, was the one to suggest making it into something more formal.
"I'm not planning on pushing out any of my own genetic progeny," Jenny had said, rolling her eyes. "You're the closest thing I have to family. I inherited enough that I can pass on a little to my kid. Yeah? So let me help you get started."
"Oh, I can't just let you give me money," Niko had said. "But." She did need more equipment, and she was getting to the point where she kind of wanted to hire a staff. "We could be partners?" Niko suggested.
"Okay, well, I'm not hauling around your cameras for you," Jenny had told her. "I get enough of that kind of work down in the shop. But I suppose I could give you a hand with the books, or something, if you need it."
"Really?" Niko had said, raising her hands in joy. "Thanks, Jenny, you're the best!"
Up to that point, her business had been mostly known as Niko's place, you know, above the Tongue and Tail Butcher Shop? But now it needed a real name.
Niko had a lot of ideas. Maybe she had too many ideas. When the time came to put something down on paper, Niko's head was empty. None of her ideas felt quite right.
So Tongue and Tail Productions was what got put on the legal documents, and it sort of fit, actually. They did a lot of documentary material about food, from video recipes to informational videos about how the human food supply chain fit into the ecologies of the world, like things about factory farming and the limitations of organic certifications.
It also made people stop and think, and remember the name. Which was excellent marketing. Niko almost wished she'd done it on purpose.
—
That had been a few years ago now.
These days Tongue and Tail Productions had a couple of facilities they used, and they kept most of their equipment in the newer place, but Niko still had her own office and interview studio adjoining her apartment above the butcher shop. It had its own entrance and everything! And a little sign in coordinating colors with the butcher shop sign downstairs that said Tongue and Tail Productions!
Today she had a meeting with Edwin Payne and the Rowlands about the upcoming shooting schedule for Edwin's new show. It was very exciting! It wasn't her first time doing a high-production extended series, but it was a little bit of a step up in terms of ambitious ventures. She thought she had everything organized pretty well, but with something with this many moving parts, you always had to leave a little room for something to go sideways.
Amid greetings and small talk, they sat down in her interview studio, and Niko made sure they all had copies of the schedule in front of them.
"Okay," she said seriously, looking at each one of them in turn. "Before we finalize the schedule, I wanted to make sure to talk with all of you, and make sure you're ready for what this is going to mean."
"It's gonna be busy, yeah?" Charles said, nodding. "Extra people in the kitchen on restaurant shooting days, and then close-up cooking segments at Edwin's place, and interviews are here, right? Just gotta make sure I'm in the right place at the right time."
"I'm sure we'll manage," his mother said, smiling fondly. "It's all very exciting."
"Let me know if there's any extra help you need," Niko told them, "or if there are problems you didn't foresee."
"Yeah," Charles agreed. "Definitely."
Something about the way he said it made Niko afraid that he would suffer through, instead. So she decided she would focus on Edwin for right now.
"A documentary like this can feel intrusive," she warned them. "Edwin, I know you've done your own videos before, but this is something else. There are going to be a lot of people and equipment in your space. It's more than just a phone camera and a single microphone and a couple of lights." She widened her eyes at him for emphasis. "We're going to have multiple microphones set up if anything important is happening, we're going to have reflectors everywhere to make sure the lighting is optimal. It's going to be a lot. And I know you like your space to stay a certain way, especially your kitchen. So I need you to let me know if it's going to be a problem, and we can work something out. All right?"
"I understand," said Edwin.
"At any point," she said. "Any of you. We can juggle stuff around if that's what you need."
They all nodded. She'd keep an eye on them, though, just in case.
"Now," Niko continued, "I want to put this right out front, even though you probably won't have to deal with it during shooting. But when attention starts to get going? Don't google yourself unless you're ready to see what people are writing about you."
"I am familiar with the concept of a bad review, Niko," said Edwin. "And I believe the Rowlands are as well."
"Um," said Niko. She was going to have to phrase this carefully. She'd been watching the three of them interact since they'd arrived, and they worked together very smoothly, clearly. They worked together like family. But also.
"Well," she said, gesturing at Edwin and Charles, "for example, the two of you have a lot of chemistry. I can see that just talking to you here for a few minutes. And people are going to see that chemistry, and react to it. They are going to speculate about your personal lives. People are going to ask you about your orientations, and you're going to need to decide how you want to respond to that."
Niko tried her best to make it sound not terrifying, but it was a terrifying thing. Being queer and in the entertainment industry.
"I can't tell you what decision to make there," she told them. "But whatever it is, we'll stand behind it. This is going to be a show about the food and the culture. Right?"
Edwin's shoulders had gone stiff, and he cleared his throat. When he spoke, his voice was not entirely its usual clear and confident tone. "I hadn't thought of that," he said.
"It's not their business," said Charles, looking squarely at Edwin with determination burning in his eyes. "We don't need to tell them anything. Right?"
"That's true," said Niko, "but it won't stop people from speculating."
"I will take that into consideration," Edwin said.
"And you, too," Niko told the Rowlands. "You should all be on the same page."
"I don't care what they say about me," Charles said. "But Edwin." He turned to his mother. "Mum, when we're on camera, you've got to tone down the teasing."
"It's mostly in Kannada," she said with a dismissive wave.
"Mum! People know what you're saying! It's written all over your face!"
"I'll see what I can do," Aadhya said.
—
By the end of the session, she thought she'd gotten them all to understand that things could be rough and they should take the potential issues seriously.
She saw them out, and then she locked up, heading back into the private areas of her apartment. She leaned against the door and sighed.
"Hi, Kingham," she said to her gerbils. "Hi, Litty. How's your day been?"
They didn't answer, just kept skittering along through their maze of transparent tubes.
"Yeah," she said. "Sounds relaxing."
She took care of them, making sure they had plenty of food and nice fresh water, and after that, she was faced with the prospect of taking care of herself.
"Ugh," she said.
Then her phone chirped.
It was Crystal.
If you're done with work for the day, you could stop in, said the text.
That sounded like a good idea. Crystal would make sure she ate something. Crystal was pushy like that. And also really good at comfort food.
Niko made her way across the hall and knocked on Crystal's door.
It swung open almost immediately.
"Hey," Crystal said, and then, "oof. Not a good meeting, huh? I thought that show was pretty airtight."
"It was a productive meeting!" Niko said, trying to be optimistic about it. "I think the show's gonna be really good. But there's a lot about being on TV that I don't think they quite get yet."
"Ah, okay, you're borrowing worries from the future, huh?" Crystal took Niko by the shoulders and sat her down at the kitchen table. "Sit. I'm making you hot chocolate. And maybe French toast."
"Maybe," said Niko in a small voice. "Well, but I need to think about this stuff. And warn them. Because they need to be ready. But I hope it goes okay."
"Well, you did warn them, right?" Crystal said, raising her eyebrows as she poured milk into a saucepan. "Job done. Time to relax."
Niko let out a long breath. "Yeah," she said. Then she thought back over the rest of the conversation. "French toast?" she asked.
Crystal laughed. "There you are," she said. "Back with us in the now. Yeah, I could do French toast. Or something. What do you think?"
"You do make the best French toast," Niko said wistfully. "How do you know all the best cozy recipes?"
Crystal looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. Then she got an old, banged-up tea tin out of one of her cupboards and handed it to Niko before going back to stirring the saucepan.
Niko opened it to find dozens and dozens of old, slightly yellowed recipe cards, notes scribbled in the margins.
"My mom doesn't know I have those," said Crystal, sounding a little distant. "No one does. Those are her mom's recipes. I found them in the back of a closet when I was fourteen." She sighed. "My parents never cooked, you know? It was always takeout or toaster waffles or whatever was in the freezer. I didn't even know we had family recipes."
"That's so sad," said Niko. She started flipping through the recipes. "Ooh, these sound really good! What's bread pudding?"
"It's kinda like a French toast casserole," Crystal told her. "A lot of these recipes are really good for using up old bread and other leftover stuff in really tasty ways. Which I don't need to do, because, you know, money, but it's still nice to be able to make something tasty instead of throwing a bunch of stuff out." She set a mug of cocoa in front of Niko. "So. Yes or no on the French toast?"
"You don't have to," Niko said.
"No, hey," said Crystal, "all my favorites, I've gotten really good at making without thinking too hard. It's pretty relaxing, actually. You want my grandma's secret French toast recipe? I can knock that out in ten minutes, no problem. Actually I want French toast now. And all the recipes in there are big enough to share."
"I would love French toast," Niko decided, and sipped her cocoa.
It made her feel warm and nice, a glow that pushed back the worries of her day.
Crystal's food made everything better.
—
Shooting started pretty smoothly. The first couple of days were mostly spent on restaurant based B roll, filming the front of the building, giving an idea of the decor and ambience in the dining room, and getting a little bit insinuated into the kitchen area. The crew jostled for space with the kitchen staff at first, but negotiations went pretty smoothly, and soon they were moving like a single workforce, stepping around each other when necessary.
Niko crossed her fingers and hoped that there would be more smooth waters ahead.
Restaurant owner / chef Charles / Food critic Edwin AU - continued!!!
Hi everyone! I just wanted to say what an incredible experience it has been seeing the chef Charles/food critic Edwin AU be so amazingly received and to have so many incredible writers collaborating with me on this! I expected the idea to get a few notes and peter out but it has taken on a life of its own and I couldn't be happier. I may or may not have gotten quite emotional about it, actually. It is truly such a joy to see everyone's different styles, writerly voices, and insights into all the different aspects of this story come together in such a beautiful synthesis to celebrate culture, food, found family, healing, and of course, the characters. <3 I'm so so so so beyond floored and honored to be working with y'all, and seeing where it continues to go! Thank you for "yes and"-ing - you are all brills!!!
Anyway, the previous reblog chain was getting SUPER long thanks to everyone's contributions (<3) so I'm gonna start a second reblog chain for everyone to reblog from!
You can read the AU from the beginning here!
The masterpost for the AU is here!
