Lancer RPG commission of Big Red, a custom Everest (and very old COMP/CON unit) that's been built and rebuilt since the SecCom era, and its latest pilot Scarlet. Big Red has seen a lot of pilots die; will she be any different? Who's to say! This is the commissioner's character for @vexwerewolf's amazing In Golden Flame adventure.

Really love this part of In Golden Flame
Tumblr media
If you are piloting the one mech that mounts a fucking capital-ship grade railcannon on it you can just... Shoot down the orbital laser that's hangs over the entire mission like a menacing sword of damocles.
That's a thing you can just do. Just blapp it out of orbit.
I adore so much that the authors put that in as an option. Especially since at this point the PC's have just gotten to Level 2 and gotten hold of their unique mech chassis' instead of the generic starter ones.
So the person riding around in their brand new HA Barbarossa will feel like they're a huge badass after using their new cool mech to shoot down a orbital death laser.
Also, I love the Barbarossa so fucking much.
It's one of my favorite mechs

Just fucking look at it and it's anti-orbital platform railgun.

Standard Bearer
Tumblr media
The personal mech of Rebeka Blanche, callsign HUSSAR.
Standard Bearer is a Sagarmatha- one of the original Sagarmathas, in fact. Rebeka has been piloting it for 500 odd years now, from the first Liberator Brigades during the revolution, through burnout in the DOJ/HR, and finally in a little backwater system called Calliope. Standard Bearer is adorned with dozens, hundreds, of hand prints in blue- from the people she's saved, and those she fought alongside. She remembers every last print well enough to touch them up by hand, after a fight. Rebeka is played by my wonderful friend, @ace-disgrace-on-the-case. She kitbashed the mech, and we finished painting her together today. It's an honor to be her GM for this campaign <3

Printloaf Tower: Over a month in the making*
This is a little fan project I made for the brilliant Lancer RPG adventure "In Golden Flame" by Vexwerewolf, which I consider to be genuinely the best TTRPG adventure I've read to this date. It's absolute garbage (max resolution 720p, any stutters are just baked in to the file. it explorted that way) for """immersion""" reasons, because video sharing is probably like that in the setting of Calliope.
I momentarily compared Jerry Masters from the adventure to Peppino Spaghetti from Pizza Tower, and it all went downhill from there. The project itself was animated in Scratch, the children's learn-to-code language, recorded on the QuickTime player for mac, and stitched together in iMovie (it sucks, never use it).
*ONLY because I forgot about it for like three weeks.

If we talk about the aesthetics of technology in Lancer, we can divide each of the Big 4 along lines of form and function.
IPS-N: Pure Function
IPS-N cares only what a mech does. It doesn't need to look good or pretty doing it - it only needs to be able to do that thing well. It's notable that the Raleigh, arguably the most form-oriented of the IPS-N frames, is also considered to be the company's biggest commercial failure - they strayed from their core design principles and got punished for it.
Harrison Armory: Form Follows Function
Harrison Armory still leans pretty heavily towards the functionality side of things, but it isn't satisfied with doing a good job alone. Yes, the mechs have to perform well, but they also have to look good doing it. There's no practical application for the Sherman's sleeveless coat or the Tokugawa's dainty little tassels, but they don't hinder combat functionality and they make the mechs look dashing. In comparison to IPS-N's coarse, industrial, almost unfinished look, HA mechs look stern, austere and imposing. There's a smoothness to them that you just don't get on IPS-N frames.
SSC: Function Follows Form
SSC is where we start to plunge into aesthetics-forward mech design. The Death's Head isn't six-legged because it's a sniper - the Death's Head is a sniper because it's six-legged. SSC came up with a mech design and asked: "what would this do best?" A six-legged chassis provided a more stable firing platform for precision weaponry, so that was what it did. Shapes and appearances are invented, and then a use case is discovered for them.
HORUS: Pure Form
It might seem weird to classify HORUS as "pure form" when their mechs largely don't have a consistent visual identity outside of the examples in the book. However, if we look a little deeper at the definition of "form," the explanation becomes clear: in some ways, HORUS is in the business of making statements, not mechs.
For anyone who's actually played a HORUS mech in Lancer, you may have noticed how awkward they are to actually pilot. Their statlines are, on paper, often very poorly suited to the sort of work they have to do. The Gorgon is built to attract attention and draw fire but has no armor. The Manticore is meant to be a front-line fighter but is quite slow. The Minotaur is meant to be a tech platform but has a low sensor range. The Pegasus' one functional trait doesn't apply to any of the weapons in its equipment package!
This is because HORUS mechs are designed purely as a testament to a certain discipline of technology. I remember expressing irritation with a friend's NeoGeo-for-X-Box emulator once, that you couldn't reconfigure the controller mapping so that it was easier to play with the X-Box controller. He remarked that it was meant as a historical preservation tool that perfectly duplicated the functionality of the NeoGeo, and that the only reason you could even play games using it at all is because that was a function of NeoGeo arcade cabinets.
That's how HORUS mechs are - their usability as chassis is broadly a side-effect.

just realizing that one of my Signature Things™ as a lancer GM seems to be taking the big bad evil guys and making them women. i'm running a heavily modified version of In Golden Flame, and the cult leader in that was originally written as a guy, but now she's a woman. i've also turned the main villain of No Room for a Wallflower into a woman. this just happens in my games i guess
i'm the #1 supporter of women's wrongs and i've got to show it

So there's a fun/dramatic incoming scene in my Lancer game, running through the In Golden Flame setting.
One of my players' characters, a UIB agent, has been AWOL for a whole chapter because they just learned a Terrible Secret about themselves - until fairly recently there was a couple years of memory missing that they found out was self-inflicted. Upon regaining that memory they immediately threw themselves into some deeply dangerous bullshit, leaving the team, the Hell's Gate Strategic Response Team, one pilot short.
In-narrative, the team was thankfully on good enough terms with hit omninet streaming sensation Ipswitch Delacy that they agreed to fill the open slot in the team comp.
So we're getting to the end of the chapter, the Big Dramatic Rescue of the aforementioned UIB agent is on the literal horizon, and we're basically queueing up a scene that amounts to "my friends, my loved ones, the team that accepted who I am have come to save me even if I've done terrible things. Also Markiplier is here?"
