here are some honest tips and remarks regarding commision work for anyone who is considering as someone who has been taking them for like, 1.5yrs?

1. people will dip on you. a lot. "i will commision you after the pay-day", "save me a slot" etc etc, don't get too excited abt these sorts of messages cuz usually people forget

2. most people are understanding and won't ask you for updates for even like, a month. don't stress over sending progress pics every few days, man

3. (whispers) tumblr people tip more than the ones on twitter. sweet website ily

4. if you're open about being proship/anti-harassment/whatever the fuck, for the love of god do NOT accept commisions from people who flaunt about being self-proclaimed antis on their accounts and this is 1000% for your safety!!! paypal n kofi show your info do not forget!!!

5. never take on more than 2 or 3 comms <- a guy who has 4 atm and is suffering. also, doesn't learn from his own mistakes

6. you will draw OCs. a lot of OCs. most likely, 85% of your commision work will be OCs. don't get too happy about getting to draw fanart and/or ship art, if that's more to your liking.

7. this is moreso for commisioners... artists might be nice to you but, personally, if you're super difficult to work with and mean, they'll add you to their unofficial blacklist and try to get out of working for you again in the future lmao

8. take 100% of payment up ahead ik this is controversial but genuinely. people who like your work will not mind, especially if you send progress pics after every step WHICH BY THE WAY! YOU SHOULD DO!! do not just. draw the entire thing and send to them for approval. engage the person in the process! make them feel part of it!

9. the client is always right, if you don't like the composition or color palette or anything else just suck it up. this is a drawing for someone else, not you. push personal tastes aside, pooks

ooh. hm. fuck. i think my first thought is always gonna be my longer-running threads with @chaoslulled — the one that stands out the most in my mind rn is the thread where satoru found seph on the brink of collapse after a hellhound kill. it was only the second thread we ever wrote together, and i ACUTELY remember how nervous i was that it was too intense and i was gonna scare hol away with it because that's happened so many times before. SJDHKSJHD

another one that comes to mind is one of my first threads with @tewwor's litho, which started with the simple inbox prompt "can't sleep?" and ended up turning into one of our longest threads to date and spiraling out into the longest fucking slowburn of this blog's career. i loved it. i'll never stop thinking about that apple.

Anyone wanna my 2 cents on Jade Shadows?

Spoilers bellow frens ;3

So, right off the bat (before I put my personal personal thoughts out there), we need to acknowledge the criticism and outright discomfort this quest had.

Some of the criticism this quest got is something I can agree with. Specifically; Jade Shadow's needed more time. 100%. Let them cook, or more importantly, let the story cook and maybe even burn a bit to give us some crispy, smokin hot parts.

The little footnote at the end of the quest saying we have 'more questions than answers'? We get it, you're self-conscious, but that doesn't give you an excuse for not giving me Stalker. PERIOD, BITCH.

Jest aside, srsly, we needed to know more about Jade, Stalker, what happened to them, baby Orion (Halo possessed me in that moment, iykyk), etc. People needed to get invested in the characters, especially because this is a quest so close to being like Sacrifice on its level of storytelling...

Had it been able to have just 30+ minutes longer.

Onto the 2nd part of the criticism, birthing sim:

I'll be honest, as someone who was thinking of even going into being a midwifery/allied health, it didn't freak me out as much as it did others. But that's just one side of it. The other is how people say Jade's agency was ignored.

I'll be honest, this is just wrong. It's not media illiteracy by any means, but rather pure ignorance. Why?

Because her agency is declared.

When?

"... you're going to be a father." OH, and the fact she literally wanted the baby. There are plenty of people who can explain it better than that, and whilst I acknowledge people may feel this way, this was, in fact, not what happened.

Also, this quest is not pro-life, nor is it anything related to that. If it was, I assure you, you would have a majority of the fan base up and walk. Take a chill pill. If you want to attack something for being pro-life, go help out at an abortion clinic with crowd control or smth. Because once you see that, you'll understand just how wrong you are.

It's not subtle.

It's not in between the lines.

It doesn't exist.

The end. Period. Fullstop.

The criticism is fair, but going so far as to say those are the undertones is just not on. Not only are you lying about something, but you are also disrespecting the very real women whom have had their agency denied in one way or another.

Now, that's not the only criticism about it, but those are just a few things you may see floating on tumblr. Again, both are ok and fair. But when you start to spread lies or ignore what actually happened, you're part of the problem, not the solution.

Now, onto the fun stuff!

Imo, aside from what was stated before, the quest was actually pretty fun and interesting. The pair make an interesting concept, especially now with the lil fugly bean, which has stolen a place in my cold, brainrotted heart. I think I like the Corpus Cap the most- pls marry me, pls. Oh, an Hunhow? Let me hug him. Let me give him a home on my ships. Let me tell him he can be my bestie!!!

Back to Stalker, though, I really hope we see more of him, especially now he's git a VA.

Speaking of, homie didn't get to speak often, but God did it hit home when he did. You can feel how desperate he is, then when he gets his answers, how lost he is. Finally, resolution and love ehen he names his lil kid at the end.

Music was on point, too. I can't listen to it tho bc Ik ima be sobbing lol. It was so beautiful!!!!!!!

Lorewise, however, I have so many fucking questions, but in the funny haha/good way.

Was jade pregnant b4 being a wf? If not, Stalker...

Why was their relationship shamed upon? Was Jade a Dax and him, well, him? Or was it because they weren't married? What was it that made the Orokin make em into Warframes? Also, Ballas, man, we know your hypocritical ass is in this shit too.

Also, Umbra and Helminth are confirmed to roam around the Orbiter, and vc Umbra is my main, this is a personal achievement. Now let us see it happen, and I'll be DE's 4 life.

But seriously, TL;DR:

Jade Shadow's was a good quest, it just needed to cook slightly longer. And, until we get more Umbra x Stalker from DE (bros b4 all), I'll be on AO3 in 3 (maybe 4) tags.

Buddie: it's The Way It's Played

Aka don't hate the player hate the game or whatever.

I woke up pondering about edy's comments and found it a bit funny and ironic because she probably doesn't know just like we don't know.

Oliver recently talked about how he wasn't heavily involved in this upcoming episode 2 so he'll be getting to watch it for the first time with us.

It's the same case with her. In her eyes she does her few scenes and goes home.

In her head she is the chosen love interest and she is indeed being asked to come back.

The second half of the season hasn't publicly been announced (or fully filmed I assume) so she's just as oblivious as we are.

What I will say is that celebrities should know to not be in the spaces of fandom and don't get heavily involved.

Especially with shippers.

As a fangirl I have always been protective, I would say, over my stuff but I made like a rule that I don't reply or have online arguments.

(mostly because i get riled up easily in real life and it's dangerous imagine doing it with a complete stranger or a mob of them if we're being fr because there's never just one person arguing with you.)

It's likely millions or billions 🙃

Also as a fangirl, I don't mind shipping or not shipping.

Do what you want, I don't care.

I grew up in the good ole don't like scroll away time.

What I'm getting at is that some people are more comfortable on online spaces. Some are more quiet (like me) but they're there.

I've recently become disillusioned slowly over the years of Hollywood ( all the woods honestly) glamour so when they are shown or said to be bad people I treat them as such.

Now in Hollywood's case their stuff is mainly criminal/jail/wtf is going on over there?!??!

In her case, I'm not surprised.

There's people who are homophobic/transphobic and everyphobic (and -ist!!) in the world so of course they would be in show business.

Cause they're people. We got people (like millions of them, a concerning number in worldwide leadership positions but that's a story for another day...) like that all over.

Celebrities are not and never will be role models. They are public images projected onto a pretty body.

That's also the reason why I'm saying that she should shut her computer and cut her losses.

(a lot of celebrities should do that honestly)

But, it does let you know who to support and who not to.

And I'd rather know my enemy rather than worship a perfect image honestly.

I also think it's unwise to fight the people who are literally indirectly paying your bills.

There are 93k people (just on Tumblr) who ship the guys.

Even I know better and I'm a fan.

That's not counting the ones not active here or casuals who agree with the pairing.

If they pay your bills walk on eggshells ma'am. You're job quite literally hinges on people liking you.

So be likable.

But as an observer it's like just shhhhhh. Please. The Internet is forever. There is no timeline for it. What are you doing??

It's the way they act.

Literally.

The reason Buddie even exists and is accepted is it's literally there. (Their fault)

There is no subtext.

The actors play it as such, the directors direct it as such and the marketing play it as such.

I'm a bit upset seeing y'all called clowns (although i hope it's said affectionately cause tone indicators or the lack of) because you're not crazy.

They quite literally put the battery in y'all backs so it shouldn't be surprising if the battery is more high powered than expected.

You are not misreading anything.

Most people just choose to ignore the signs because

Truly our downfall as a modern society.

Anyways, as a writer and heavy media consumer there's no mistakes.

Every wprd is carefully chosen, every shot has a purpose and every cut is done. These things are practiced a thousand times, edited, retaked a thousand times if they have to.

There's no mistakes in media. It's literally made to influence, persuade and educate.

Nothing is a coincidence!

But after reading a few interviews and listening to the fandom I think we can also say with confidence they've been playing it as a romance.

There's nothing platonic.

They have platonic couples on the show.

That

is not it.

Even if you see it as pure writing without the context of their acting choices.

Let's say kitchen scene.

Ik we all know that scene religiously and can only see it as insane (because they are. It is.) but I read it in my mind as a blank sheet of paper and couldn't help but wonder.

I imagined it more platonically. You can quite literally put, let's say, Hen and Chim in that same scenario. Damn even Eddie and Chim.

Their acting choices would reflect that. Hell, read the lines without looking (or hearing their insane intonation) and imagine your best friend. Any friend for that matter.

Ps i love buck 1.0 and was shooketh to see his return because i watched the show backwards. i did season 2-6 in like a week then begrudgingly did season 1. Me nah like abby ...

They are choosing to act it out as a romance.

Now that could lend itself to male partnership in movies (and real life) where they went to war together that were usually where gay/queer men had partnerships/relationships in every sense of the word.

The shows ain't got it from nothing. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I also find out a bit hilarious to imagine the director tried to get them to stop but the takes were either too good or they kept pushing the envelope and the editors were like yes. 🤗

On a bit of a more serious note let's say it is a bit of manipulation of the masses marketing wise.

The show is very queer friendly with a (black!) lesbian couple, a gay man, an engaged (black!) gay couple and many queer stories of different races in their cases that are told wonderfully.

I acknowledge and comment them for it but ..

The big problem is how Buddie is treated. (Or rather the very rational people who ship them)

(which their name is kind of funny because I link it to buddy cop movies that can be homoerotic when they feel like it and buddie is technically that trope)

Homosexual media (in the case of film) has always been subtext, hidden, stereotyped, twisted or been outright secret messages for the girls to uncode (cause religion 🤷🏾‍♀️).

It has only been like very recent that queer people have been gaining respect in media so it's not surprising.

What life was like in 2019 to now in terms of queer media is like night and day. The same would be for the 2000s. Gay was used as an insult. The world is quite literally changing before our eyes.

In their case, the elf scene is said to be a wink at the audience.

But the actors took it seriously. So we do as well.

Aka the battery put in they back.

They respect the same vision. 😤goated

The chemistry is undeniable, and the tropes they have parallel a lot of romantic things used historically in media. (And in the show *bathena* but🤷🏾‍♀️)

It's not an accident to say that if one of them had been female (aka the "acceptable" pairing) they'd have been together.

You could argue that if he'd been with Maddie like intended they'd be together. And little jiyun would be a sister.

Back on topic.

I found it interesting when watching like a compilation (cause i did nawt watch the show before become a buddie fan) and found it hilarious because it was like their normal behavior and i felt the romantic tension shift. It was like whoooaaa holup. The air shifted.

It's very easy to spot it because at the first few episodes it was very platonic then it became very side eye....

What do you mean he's cute? What do you mean wanna go for the title?

(That scene is eternally insane)

What do you mean with other couples they're paired as a family? Consistently?

What do you mean the kid and you go on solo family outings to the zoo? Constantly? For years?

You take care of him like all the time?

What do you mean he's your kid's legal guardian and partly the reason you lived after being trapped in a well?

The actors play it romantically. Ryan does cause I remember step up.

After like a year together? Over his family? Who are not firefighters??

Ik how he is when he's flirting.

The show also (unfortunately) writes their love interests as tools of self growth for them (which can be a bit problematic cause the women aren't being treated three dimensionally characters men get to be. the two who were closest were abby, and Taylor. Shannon was so so for me personally. Which is odd because they have complex main females it's just unfortunate that the women they have for them are rarely people outside of the relationship and that's why it falls apart in the case of their relationship/people getting invested).

Nobody is quite literally written as important to each other like them. They are in a relationship no doubt. We can say queer platonic now (as they are raising a kid together?!??!! Like come on. Chim and Hen aren't like Buck and Ed. Also the good cop bad cop scene?)

It's just not sexual I'd say.

Cause emotionally, mentally all that is there.

And they could absolutely play it "straighter" 🥴 cause I've seen a plethora of male friendships (slight side eye ry we got buddy cop movies galore don't play with me!!!) where they support each other.

They don't act like that!!!! Look at this and tell me I'm wrong!

hey anon!! i think tumblr is so much about personal curation and taste, especially within the sp community, but i'm more than happy to rec a bunch of the blogs i personally follow <3

to start, i clearly love gregstophe and if you also like them (or are looking to become a fan), i highly recommend @pnjrnk, @xyrothmuse, @cheesymorgue, @advisinghat56, @avemariaholic, @r0b2n, and @fox1well1 in terms of relatively active artists. not all of them are consistently gregstophe or even south park, but they're all so incredibly talented and kind <3 there's not that many active fic writers out there for the pair, but @stupidintrders, @revoleotion, and @hellsonlyrose are all active posters who have written for the pair that i have had wonderful conversations with. there’s absolutely more people who i could include here who are gregstophe shippers, but i don’t want to be TOO overwhelming.

for probably my #2 ship (style), i can't not highlight my pal @allymumu who not only has the most gorgeous art style but also writes meta posts from time to time! @prichiyot is another double threat of incredible art and quality writing, gotta give her a look. i've been super into @anddersun and @marshwayle's art lately also?? definitely check them out. and style nation would be NOWHERE without the incredible art that comes from icons like @bunytime, @sn33z3s, @pononoin, @emilyartstudio-s, and @adriabun. on the writer side of things, @amporella writes both fics and meta usually centered around stan and/or kyle and she's got such a good grasp on them as characters. there's a good chance you already know her, but @fayoftheforest writes fic for various pairs but her big one is style and she always has nice things to say. @lyingmakesyousterile has this really intriguing ground hog day-esque fic right now and @tullievolf's fic cosmonauts is life-altering to say the least.

struggling to think of blogs who lean towards/specialize in other ships... but i've got a few! there's countless talented catg artists that lean towards creek out there, but my personal beloveds are @honey-creek (also essential for all clyde lovers), @craigrights, @tweekbroscoffeeshop, and @messtyrion. for fic, obviously @wintergrew if you don’t already know them. for k2, you need to check out @candyunicornsateme, @herbietales, @halwo, and @5ftkyle. all incredible artists as well as general enjoyers of the characters.

i very vehemently despise this ship, for the same reason i hate Andrew/Kevin. i think it’s so important for y’all to remember who these characters are and not just ship them because they all have dicks and are nice to each other sometimes. that turns into mlm fetishization real fuckin quick.

this is one that i can almost sort of see. if i hadn’t accidentally spoiled andreil for myself, i would have assumed this was canon during my first read.

but it’s just… i love the fact that they’re friends. i think their friendship can be so amazing, and i love reading fics where they’re that close. i don’t think every friendship in media has to turn romantic.

remember what i said about kevandreil? apply it to this one too.

ik it sounds like i just hate poly couples. i don’t. i just hate ships like this, that really wouldn’t be healthy but people put together anyway because oh gay people yay! it feels gross and fetish-y and i am not here for it.

this is a ship that i can see happening pre-canon, but i’m not the biggest fan of it simply because there’s no way it could be healthy. they went through a lot together, sure, but traumabonds are notoriously unhealthy.

i’m sending this to a few tk blogs bc i’d like multiple people’s perspectives…

im a taekooker but i rlly have these moments where i think we all must just be deluded (jkkers, tkkers, other shippers etc) bc everyone believes SO strongly that their ship is right and we all feel like we can back it up w “evidence”. jikookers genuinely see something btwn jm and jk and us taekookers genuinely see something between v and jk. i do feel like taekook makes the most sense logically (especially during the solo era) and i feel like i did a lot of research to come to that conclusion (including watching videos on a lot of other pairings like jikook), but i could rlly just have underlying biases that are making me see things between tk that my brain wants to see. to other shippers and fans tkkers r insane, to tkkers others r insane. so honestly aren’t we probably all insane lol ? ik it’s POSSIBLE that tk are together but it just seems so improbable. i often try to talk myself out of taekook bc like rly what r the chances of two members in the biggest band in the word actually secretly dating for like many years ? and they’ve been able to successfully hide it all this time ? and we believe they still are together ? idk it sounds too good/far-fetched to be true and like i can’t imagine a day coming way later on down the line where it would actually be confirmed or like super super obvious even without confirmation. but i can totally imagine a day where it comes out that jk is officially dating some girl or something like that and then we’d all be proven wrong. ik that leans into assuming heterosexuality is the default which is not good and i don’t believe that but i can’t help but to feel like nah we’re all just delusional and fantasizing and tk r not together. i do definitely believe v is queer in some way but maybe that’s all.

I think it's important to realize that it's okay to not actually believe in Tae and Jk being together (or any ship for that matter). Them being together or not does not actually effect your own life. So if you're in a state of "well, I definitely see some stuff going on, but I have no clue what it is exactly" that's totally fine. Uncertainty isn't a bad thing, you just have to be able to cope with it in a healthy way. Sometimes uncertain shippers do not know how to cope with the uncertainty very well, those are the ones who scrutinize every detail of every moment we get.. trying to find proof. I get it, but it's not the way to go, because that uncertainty will always return and you'll end up in a loop with no end. I think there's people that get actual anxiety because of this at times.

I know to non-shippers we (and other shippers) must all look insane. I don't think we actually are. Even though there are insane-ish tkkrs out there, that doesn't mean there can't be some truth to it as well. When you look around on twitter, youtube, instagram, Tumblr, you find all sorts of different Tkkrs. While we all fall under the term 'Taekooker' i'd say there's many different categories, which very different outlooks on the situation. For instance, technically I'd rather call myself a Taekook believer, while I suppose you are an actual shipper. There's also those that believe, but do not ship.

I'll tell you my reasons for not thinking I'm insane (😂😂). This sounds super stupid and arrogant (and I'm actually cringing while typing this up)... but I consider myself smart and insightfull. Have been all my life, and others have also told me they think of me the same. Basically, I trust my instincts and judgement. I've gone through life experiencing many different feelings, emotions, situations.. and I feel I just understand life and people. When it comes to Tae and Jk, I don't need all the overanalyzed stuff. I just see the way they look at each other and the way they interact and I feel I recognize romantic love there. I understand why it must seem 'too good to be true', but is it really? People so often fall in love with people they are in close proximity to. Coworkers falling in love isn't odd, best friends falling in love isn't odd, celebrities falling in love isn't odd... so why would Tae and Jk be the exception? It isn't even weird for two members in the same band to fall in love or be married... it is just odd to see two members of a K-pop band in love... but is the reason that it doesn't happen, or that it isn't made public?

When you look at celebrities that have come out, you will very often see that they as well have kept it a secret for many years. Idols are expected to keep their relationships hidden anyway, so for Tae and Jk this isn't very much different in that aspect, only there's an added reason. I don't think Namjoon, Jimin, Yoongi, Hobi, and Jin have been single the last ten years.. and we know nothing of their relationships either.

I don't think their relationship has been easy and I expect there have probably been many difficulties along the way. But when I see how they are together this year.. I definitely think their love was stronger than the things that got thrown in their way.

I think it's good to be sceptical. I try to be as well.

"what if there's a another planet in which life may have existed" Curiosity helps us to know about the unknown but SOME ABSURD SIGHTINGS makes us wonder otherwise making us stick to that thing to research for it more. ramblings and lots of art of an Upturned AU: What if Traveler was a creature. a critter, even. normal guest behavior

this is in order of when it was drawn so it's MASSIVELY out of order timeline-wise and some of the early comics are outdated story-wise but they're cute/funny so they're staying in. I think it's very funny how you can see the moment I gave him silly little bunny ears.

(also note: in the image with the three critter-travelers in harnesses, the one on the left belongs to @/kasprawn39, and the one in the middle belongs to @/MicrowaveSentry on instragram. the critters are being introduced to each other <3)

anyways,

AU in which Sobbergritch gets his hands on the Traveler and turns him into a monster. creaches him. gritches him, even. transmorgifies him into a rabbit kangaroo thing. To mock Ik about ripping his only friend away from him, he shipped the Traveler's hat up to him, which was what finally broke Ik and made him flee the inn.

For a couple weeks, Sobs experimented on the Traveler, before giving up when the storm knocked out power once and for all, and tossed him down to the bottommost levels, where he'd hopefully be eaten by horrible nightmare guest-monsters. unfortunately for Sobs, the Traveler is very durable and scrambles out through the top of the elevator, climbing to safety. and they keep climbing. Because down is bad in their broken mind, so they go up, no matter the fact they're in terrible pain. He uses "attack first, ask questions later" tactics for survival

They remember a voice, one that makes them think of safely but also hurt and betrayal, and they know they'd once wanted to descent the inn. But he doesn't remember much else outside of emotions associating to concepts.

The Morning races down the elevator shaft before he can leave (or just as he collapses on the ground floor, I haven't settled on which)

(My dear dear followers. you have no idea the sheer amount of happy little headcanons I've crafted for myself about the Morning where they're dumped in Afterlife Two: The Cooler One where all the souls who never got to live full happy lives can exist in peace before moving on at their own pace. This idea is not exclusive to this AU)

He wakes up in a field, and it's beautiful, but the whole This Is New And Therefore Threatening mindest makes him on edge. He staves off rest in favor of scuttling about, just so happens to hear Ik calling out for someone, anyone, and darts over.

Cue them recognizing Ik has their hat, trying to wrestle it from him, and failing, because they feel bad hurting him and they're too weak to do much other than flail and gnaw. He follows Ik, who doesn't recognize him as the Traveler, and instead believes him to be some guest who hates him for what happened to the inn.

They travel together with no particular destination in mind; they find others, and the empty husk of a town (helpfully Morning-provided so all these sad miserable souls can enjoy living), which is immensely eerie but the few dozen guests + Ik are too drained to question a place to live. The Traveler regularly flees people at first, deeming the place a danger but also offering shelter, and becomes a cryptid alongside several other confused and angry/scared creature-guests. Ik still tries to befriend him and make him feel safe. Few people are too happy to have Ik around, recognizing him as someone who clearly knew something was up with the inn, yet sent them down to their demise anyways.

The guests were partially turned back to normal, depending on their state of mind. Some more human than others, with people retaining some shred of Sobbergritch's experimenting on them, while those still completely out of their mind without a true sense of self (like the Traveler) didn't change. There are 'growing pains' if/when they recover, but it's a long time before that happens to Mr. "exhausted 40 year old man in a 20-something year old body who hasn't felt safe in over a year and can't remember the last time he slept well".

Shrimp recognizes the Traveler as the Traveler. Ik does not. He feels awful when he does realize, and finally gives him his hat back. mmmm. reunions!

I have many more thoughts about this AU, but this is the gist of it. fun fun times all around

Insanity was a social construct. 

“Through hell and high water, working together for a happier city.”

Segregation. 

Insanity was a safety net for the ordinary. Reassure themselves that they were the superiors, by declaring that a madman, one whom allowed his mind to dwindle away, was inferior; in need of repair. Broken. But really it was there to make them feel better about their lack of individualism. For the correlation between insanity and creativity is no coincidence.

“A calm citizen, is a happy London.”

But what happens, when there is nothing left but insanity? Nothing to balance the ship. Nothing to secure the loose canons in place. Nothing to herd the crew onto the deck. No bilge pump, nor buckets to remove water. 

What happens then? 

The ship sinks. 

“Because happiness, is going down with the ship.”

The amphetamines burned his nostrils. He coughed harshly, fingers gripping the floor as he regained stability. Not yet satisfied, the man got to his feet, and scrounged through a bowl of brightly coloured pills, knocking a few back with a swig of cognac. He could feel the drugs making their way through his bloodstream. He could see it before his very eyes. He watched as his body contorted, allowing the sensation to pique every crevice. 

Dickie took a deep breath. He steadied himself, and stood up, making his way over to the mirror. The glass was covered in a thin layer of grime, splatters of fresh bodily fluids dripped from its surface. He was yet to clean up from his most recent client - it was well worth the effort, for the pretty penny he had gained. But there was no time to dwell on his prospects, for his master expected to be escorted to that fucking cocktail party within the next half hour, and so he resumed getting ready. Dickie touched up his makeup, drawing on his uneven cupid’s bow with a crappy lipstick. He combed through the grease that coagulated on his scalp, pulling his hair into two small bunches. He adjusted the garters which strained against his muscular quadriceps, suspending his stockings. He had footballer’s legs; athletically thin, yet stocky toward the thigh. Lastly, Dickie tightened his corset. He tugged the strings taught, until his waist synched and his chest impelled upward, giving him the illusion of visible cleavage. DIY tits were his favourite party trick. With a final scan of his appearance, Dickie peeled his gaze from his reflection and proceeded to leave his den. 

The air was dank, and wet. Thick with pain, as though the tears cried by the drowned had condensed into the very air particles breathed by those lucky enough to still be breathing. Pink neon lights flickered in tune with a poor soul, hyperventilating in a heap on the group. A curdling scream echoed through the underground, the pitch scattered and unnatural. But none of it phased Dickie. It had been like that ever since the river rose. 

How long had it been? 

He failed to recall.

Time seemed to collapse on itself. Hours sped past like mere moments, yet a night alone passed in a manner of years. So much so that soon Dickie found himself on the arm of the Impresario, the most powerful man in all of London. His wealth was inherited, and somehow, the rising of the river allowed said man to rise in power, and social rank. 

They say he’s got more money than God.

“Dickie, dear?” The man crooned. “Why do you make me attend these parties? You know I hate these fucking people.”

Dickie gripped his masters arm, ushering him through the grand revolving door. Water seeped in through the gaps as always. They entered the party - an orchestral waltz variation played over the grammar phones, while women dressed in slutty leather bodysuits danced sensually throughout the room. Guests mingled in small clusters, alcohol in hand, making rowdy fools of themselves. It was only ten past nine, and yet a good majority of the room was already pissed. 

“Well, I thought, Impresario, that socialising may very well be good for you. Cheer you up maybe.”

“Cheer me up my arse!” He spat. “Last time you brought me to one of these functions - it was that pink-haired whore, Pop Pop or whatever she calls herself’s afterparty - I was almost assassinated! Bah!”

Dickie suppressed a gulp. “There’ll be little girls here. New, pretty girls for you to take home and look after. Perhaps you can strike up a deal with them, get them to work for you?”

The Impresario grumbled a reply, agreeing in annoyance. 

“See? There’s always something to look forward to. I told-“

“Fuck off and fetch me a drink, Dickie.”

“Of course, Impresario.”

Oh yes. 

Happiness had indeed gone down with the ship. For all.

Some were just better at hiding it. Some were so consumed by memories of the past, a past that they would never regain, that they sacrificed their souls to the river. Dug themselves a watery grave. 

For no one truly adapted to the change, no matter how much they told themselves otherwise. Dickie knew he hadn’t. He knew full-well his life had been thrown off course when first flood struck London. But he was already fucked, for his life was a shambles before the banks of the Thames flooded. The water was just an excuse. Drugs and addiction had overridden his soul long before the river overran the streets. He’d forgotten everything. 

They called him insane. But really, he’d never felt shallower. 

For the brink of insanity resided somewhere deep within him: fractured images of a life he couldn’t quite remember. He just couldn’t locate it.

“Dickie, you bloody bastard, where is my drink?!” 

“Coming, Impresario. You need not stress!” Dickie hastily knocked back a shot of spirits unknown to him, and poured a goblet of wine for his master. 

This was all he knew. Dickie had two purposes; prostitution, and waiting on his master. He knew he had been someone else once, but dwelling on what what was or what could have been did no good. Right now, in this universe, he was Dickie and these were his purposes. 

For the past is another land.

The Impresario had insisted on walking himself home that evening, so Dickie was free to scrounge about the party in hopes of landing his clutch on a nice, pretty rich one. After all the time he’d spent in the “business”, he’d built up a bit of a name and reputation for himself. Sure, there were the other supreme whores about London’s underworld; Little Cassie, The Triangle Man to name a few. Oh, and one could not go without mentioning the Ripper. Named after the unidentified killer who stalked London’s streets during the 19th century, the Ripper was the most notorious among them, with many clients reportedly emerging in the most ghastly of physical states. The Ripper was also a fine choice for those wishing to end their life with a combination of pleasure and pain; in simpler terms, to be fucked to death. 

But when it came to creativity, Dickie was certainly up there with the best. He’d certainly rank within the uppermost echelon of prozzies in new London. The work wasn’t all that bad either; he got to dress up hyper-feminine, and confuse the tits off people with his androgyny. And he’d just spotted his next victim.

“Hey there, sweet cheeks!” Dickie pranced to a dark corner of the room where he spied a tall gentleman. He hitched his skirt up a little higher, so to entrap his prey. He chewed his gum playfully, and attempted to heighten the pitch of his voice. “You look lonely, over here, all by your… lonesome…” Dickie remained in the shadows, but moved closer to the man, leaning forward slightly, to display his “assets”. “I can fix that, you know. Come back with me to my den, and I’ll teach you a thing or two.”

The man remained silent; distant, disconnected. Perhaps what he needed, was a little bit of confusing. 

“They call me Dickie,” he lowered his voice to its natural pitch, twirling a pigtail of hair around his finger. “I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself.” He trailed a wayward hand down to his lower region. “Allow my appearance fool you all you like, darling. I fool them all. ‘Is it a man, is it a woman, oh I’m not sure if I mind?’”

Bingo. The gentleman’s eyes flickered to meet Dickie’s. He had him hooked. Now all he needed to do was reel him in. But the unnamed man spoke before Dickie could let another flirtatious innuendo slip from his pouty lips. 

“Have we met before?”

What? Of course not! Dickie had never seen this man in his life. But he decided he was more likely to prosper if he played along. “I dunno, hot stuff. Have we met before?”

“It’s just… you remind me so much of someone. Someone I used to know. Someone whom I abandoned. I never had the chance to apologise, before…”

Oh christ. He was the philosophical type. Probably the type to burst into tears amid jerking off. But Dickie was in too deep to pull out now. Besides, it looked as though this man had money, judging by his appearance, so he kept his eyes on the prize.  

“Was this person a woman? A man?”

“Bit of a confuser, kinda like you actually.”

“Then let me tantalise you. Live out your greatest fantasies. I can be anyone you want me to be. I can be that person, if you like. All you have to do, is say yes.” Dickie held eye contact with the gentleman and bit his lip, doing all in his power to seduce this mere simpleton. 

“I’ve never cared much for prostitutes. Let alone the outlandish, futuristic types. Feels wrong anyway. To betray him like that.”

“Ah ha! So it is a he! No matter, sir. I can rid the dress as quickly as I can don it! Tell me, what was this gieser like in bed? Submissive? Dominant?”

“I dunno.” 

“Pardon?”

“Never slept with him. Had too much respect for him.”

“Did you love him?”

“…yeah. He loved me too… He needed me. And I left him.” 

Dickie rolled his eyes. What a fucking simp. This was going nowhere and there were only so many hours in the night. He turned his back and began to walk away, but the man lunged forward and clutched his wrist. 

“How much for the night?”

Dickie’s face contorted into a sickly-sweet smile. “Call it 70 quid.”

The man retrieved his wallet, handing over the cash. Dickie pocketed the money, slipping it down his front. “Now, that payment’s been made, allow me to assess you. Lift up your shirt. Come on, show me your little belly button.”

“Ah, no, I don’t think so. Not here.”

“Fucking prude. Come on then. I’ll take you back to my den. I haven’t got all day, hurry up!” Dickie grabbed the man by his shoulder, and looped his arm through his, leading the way. 

“Oi, Dickie!” A voice hollered somewhere off from the distance.

“Not now, Donny. I’ve got a client!” 

Soon the pair found themselves in the stinking labyrinth that was the old underground. 

“Just in here, thanks.” Dickie shoved his client into a small room, slamming the door behind him. “What do you think of my den? Fucking fantastic!!”

The man remained silent. 

“Oh, you’re a shy little dove, aren’t you? Tell me, what’s your name?

He didn’t answer.

“Speak! For christ’s sake! Speak you bloody wanker!” 

He mumbled a name, though Dickie could not make it out. He decided on a softer approach this time, taking a deep breath as he altered his persona. “I’m sorry, darling. I didn’t quite catch that,” he cooed. “Could you repeat your name for me please?”

“Howard. Howard Moon.”

And it happened. 

As if those two words together were the final piece of the puzzle, his memory was triggered. As if the words were a lost key to unlock the deepest, most far-away, most forgotten parts of his mind. It was as though he was watching a film in ultra HD, running at a thousand miles an hour. It all returned to him. All those years ago. But out of the flurry of forgotten youth, one name surfaced to the forefront of his memory. 

“Vince.”

“Pardon me, Dickie?”

Dickie met Howard’s gaze, and everything made sense. “Vince.”
