Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye (Phase 02) #11: Shadowplay, Part 3: An Intimate Beheading
Read Date: October 24, 2022 Cover Date: November 2012 ● Writer: James Roberts ● Art: Alex Milne ● Inks: Juan Castro ◦ Alex Milne ◦ John Wycough ● Colorist: Josh Burcham ● Letterer: Chris Mowry ● Editor: John Barber ●
Synopsis: On Cybertron, before the war… Orion Pax and his team prepare for their attempt to steal the explosive replica of the Matrix of Leadership hidden within the body of Nominus Prime in the Primal Basilica. Incredulous, Prowl refuses to get involved, but promises not to blow the whistle on Pax if he keeps Prowl's partner Chromedome out of the action. As Prowl departs, Chromedome and Roller return from the Academy of Advanced Technology with three of its students selected by Pax's senator friend to help in the heist, all "outliers" possessed of special powers: the technology-disrupting Glitch, the magnetic Windcharger and the super-learner Skids.
Aboard the Lost Light, Rewind's story takes a short break so Ratchet can check on the progress of the still-unresponsive Rung. Swerve pilfers some especially hard "Nightmare Fuel" liquor from Trailbreaker and begins dishing it out, jokingly getting Rung's name wrong and being warned by Ratchet that he particularly hates that. Everyone settles down as Chromedome gets back to his part of the story, describing his visit to the workshop of Iacon Mechaforensics ballistics expert and Primal Vanguard fanboy Ironfist, from whom he obtained a replica Matrix they could swap the bomb out for. Ratchet interrupts for a moment to recount an exchange between him, Roller and Pax that followed, as Roller attempted to warn Pax of various questionable activities his senator friend was involved in, including the recruitment and modification of other Autobots in addition to Pax himself, but Pax would not hear it.
In the Lost Light medibay, Rodimus balks at First Aid's diagnosis of Red Alert's comatose state as the result of attempted suicide. Ultra Magnus attempts to restrain him as he grows angrier, accidentally gouging large dents in his arms that shock him into relaxing. Magnus proposes putting Red Alert in cold storage until their circumstances are more conducive to his mental well-being, and with Drift's agreement, Rodimus sadly does so.
The story of the heist continues, with Ratchet describing how each of the outliers used their special powers to help penetrate the Primal Basilica while Chromedome and Roller remained behind to guard the senator. Their approach hidden from the Sky Spy network thanks to Roller's hacking skills, Windcharger magnetically levitated the team over the heads of the Triorian Guard of Triple Changers standing watch at the Basilica, while Glitch deactivated the security systems so that Skids could (indignantly) lower Pax into position with his grappling hook. Discovering that the Matrix-bomb was locked in place, Pax switched places with Ratchet, whose incredible hands picked the locks with ease. Things almost went south when Glitch patted Skids on his back, jamming his winch and causing Ratchet to drop the bomb, but Windcharger saved the day by magnetically preventing its fall. The theft successfully completed, the team departed, but, having not been contacted by Roller at the appointed time, Pax sped on ahead to investigate; Chromedome takes over the story to describe Pax's return, just in time to find that Senate thugs Kroma, Macabre and the Heavies had attacked their safehouse.
Pax took out one of the Heavies, but when Kroma held his gun against Roller's head and proposed an exchange, the senator agreed to go with him. The remaining Heavy, Anvil, remained behind to finish off Pax, but Pax used the Matrix-bomb to destroy his attacker, then unearthed Chromedome from the rubble to lead him to the Institute, figuring Kroma had taken the senator there. Alas, they discovered it was deserted—because despite its name, it was not unique. The senator had potentially been taken to any one of hundreds of hidden facilities, lost to them.
Such is the end of the story: not a happy one, but an ending nonetheless. Tailgate has a few remaining questions, which Rewind answers: Proteus did not keep his promise, and much to Tailgate's surprise, Orion Pax became Optimus Prime. Sadly, Rung remains non-responsive, but when alarms suddenly begin blaring throughout the ship, and everyone heads for battle stations, Skids decides to try one last thing: he leans close to Rung, and deliberately mispronounces his name several times. Quietly, the psychiatrist awakens and corrects him.
On Cybertron, before the war… Orion Pax is approached by another of the senator's recruits, Zeta. And elsewhere, in one of the many Institutes, two staffers talk about the newest victim of Shadowplay: a senator who is also being subjected to the head-and-hand replacement ritual known as empurata. A senator…
…named Shockwave.

Hooo! Boy! It's good to be working on War and Wings stuff, again. I'm celebrating the 10 year anniversary of my Transformers Prime fanfic: War and Wings. As part of the celebration, I'm planning to edit each of the chapters, as well as release new artwork for each chapter. Don't worry; I'm not going to change anything major. I just want to edit for readability and to close up some plot holes that were missed during the initial release. So, to kick things off, I think it's high time that Io gets her own reference sheet.
I'm also including an extended biography, since we really don't get to delve much into her backstory in WAW.
Here’s a link to chapter one of the fic (unedited as of right now...but that’ll change once I finish another character ref).
https://www.deviantart.com/praxcrown5/art/War-and-Wings-Chapter-1-part-1-Truth-or-Dare-304027044
Enjoy
Name: Io of Nova Cronum Age: Approximately 250, 000 earth years (by the time WaW starts) Profession: Medic and CaranologistStatus: Offline Eons before the Decepticon/Autobot war, Io studied caranology--a mathematically intensive subdicipline of enerology--under the tutelage of Flash Point and Olefin, two prominent researchers in Nova Cronum. The two scientists used their power and influence to collect Io as a raw protoform from the Well of Allsparks. They took the protoform back to their lab and used Olefin's knowledge of protoform matter to shape her body, giving her her first altmode (hovercraft). She would begin studying caranology as soon as she finished her general education courses at the Iacon Academy. Within a few dozen vorns, she had advanced so much in the field that 'bots, including her formers, began calling her a "prodigy," and she was sent to the Nova Cronum Research Institution to hone her studies. She would continue on there until just before the Rust Plague forced Cybertron to destroy it's expansive space bridge network. With energon supplies dwindling due to rampant use in the ages prior, Io would rejoin her formers and together with a cabal of other scientists, would begin the seemingly impossible task of trying to create synthetic energon. During the age of Rust, Io would be introduced to the world of underground gladiatorial combat by one of her research partners. She never participated in any matches, as her body wasn't designed for combat. However, she would become sympathetic to calls for social equality that were being expounded by bots like councilor Soundwave, Orion Pax and Megatron. As time went on, the functionism of old began to regain steam, and many bots in the research caste began to draw ever more arbitrary lines between themselves and those whom they considered socially inferior. When Io's own research cabal began to drift in this direction, Io left in protest. Her formers didn't want her to go, as they felt that her viewpoints may help influence the rest of the cabal, but ultimately left the decision up to her. She flew to Kaon where she became a vocal supporter of Megatron and his more radical ideas of social reform. After Halogen's assassination, she would side with Megatron and his "decepticons", hoping that her knowledge of caranology could be put to good use. However, she soon found out that the 'Cons cared little for what they considered "intellectual pursuits," and after being dismissed by Shockwave, was sent to the Kaon slums to serve as a medic and prostitute. She was reformatted into a jet to make her more appealing to Decepticon soldiers. Despite hating her new life, her talents in "medicine" earned her some sympathy from her y'vst, and she was allowed to leave the slums from time to time to practice flying and marksmanship in the nearby Sonic Canyons. Eventually, her favorable reputation in the slums (combined with a bribe of several thousand shanix) earned her a place in an aerial gladitorial match called the toib'ai'lov Tournament. She earned high enough marks that she was recruited to the 4th tactical bombing division under Commander Dreadwing, where she would partake in numerous, aerial offensives against Autobot ground forces. Between battles, her medical skills were still used to "boost morale," and as time went on, she began to wonder if joining the Decepticons was really worth all of the pain. Eventually, the Decepticon front reached Praxis, and the ensuing stalemate saw a pause in the war. Megatron, furious over the outcome, ordered Bruticus Maxiumus, and a legion of loyal gladiators, to invade Nova Cronum. The citizens of the city were given an ultimatum: Join Megatron or die. The citizens, including Io's formers, held fast to their position of neutrality, and were slaughtered. The city was shelled until nothing was left in the aftermath but pools of molten slag. When news of Nova Cronum reached Kaon, Io deflected. If Megatron was willing to inflict such horrors upon unarmed scientists, what was to stop him from doing the same to his own followers.? She flew to the ruins of Praxis, ripped out her decepticon insignia in front of the startled Autobots allowed herself to be shackled and carted off to Iacon where she was interrogated by Prowl for nearly three orns. Once it was discovered that she was a very qualified medic and caranologist, she was sent to the Iacon Academy and assigned to an old scientist named Drive System. Drive System, suffering from Decepticon prejudice and jealous that Io was more talented of a scientist than him, attempted to blackmail her for her research. Io, in a blind rage, tries to kill him, but is apprehended quickly and sent to the decagon. After ten orns of confinement, her probation begins and she is sent to the Iacon Clinic and Triage Facility to serve as Ratchet's shield and assistant. https://www.deviantart.com/praxcrown5/art/War-and-Wings-Chapter-1-part-1-Truth-or-Dare-304027044

Hey, Star, did you have a favorite museum or anything back on Vos?
I had several! Vos's museums were unique on Cybertron, in that they were open to the public. The entire public. You didn't need a special pass is you were low caste. Of course, lower castes from other cities would likely never come to Vos in the first place, but say a courier or someone was sent here - they could visit the museums if they wanted to. It shocked me when I learned other cities' lower castes didn't go to museums, when I would visit the Stellar Galleries in Iacon.
Speaking of Stellar Galleries, Vos had some too. Research-wise, they weren't as extensive as the one in Iacon, where you could set your frame of reference and see the stars from any point in space. Iacon's were a Golden Age institution and they reflected the interstellar scope of Cybertronian civilization at the time. Vos's galleries predated the Golden Age by a lot. The first ones were from Cyberton's Warring States period, right at the beginning of Vos's Classical Period. They were built in the oldest towers of the city, the Spires of the Heavens, as a gift from the lords Corona's Blade and Eclipse to the scholar-lord First-Light-Through-Storms for joining their alliance and essentially creating the Vos we know today. They were largely mechanical circles with some holographical capabilities, and they could be positioned in real time to replicate the observations of the telescopes in the other six towers. They were a real testament to Eclipse's engineers guild's skill.
Once the city grew taller and brighter around them, the observatories there became less useful, and new towers were built nearby in Vos's unversity. Those galleries were similar to the ones in Iacon, with full holographic displays and the ability to zoom in on other star systems. However, the view was locked into an orientation based on observation from Cybertron. It made up for that by being open to the sky and city, so the holograms corresponded to what you actually saw when you looked up, and they were overlaid onto some of the most beautiful views on Cybertron. Even mecha with no interest in astronomy flocked to the Stellar Galleries just to look.
Another museum I liked was the Quintesson War Museum. It had a lot of items from the war, like part of a Quintesson ship's hull, lots of weapons, and some intense holographic simulations of battles. Vos's Armada played an important role in ridding our planet of the occupation, and the museum had some of the most extensive records of those battles and the people involved. It was not a popular museum outside of Vos, because it was accused of stoking nationalism, and it even drew protests and had all mentions of it scrubbed from the Grid feeds when they did a special exhibit on the Quintesson roots of the caste system. They "made up for it" with an exhibit on Sentinel Prime's heroic actions in uniting Cybertron and defeating the Quintessons. Of course, the contrast between Sentinel back then and how he was in the late caste age stood out clearly (and deliberately), but Iacon was appeased. They often didn't pick up on Vos compliments.
My other favorite places that might qualify as museums were Vos's large, outdoor art spaces. A lot of our visual art was meant to fill public spaces and be enjoyed outdoors, sometimes even while flying. We had kinetic sculpture gardens where the wind would create movement and sound. It was very relaxing. The training hall in the Air Command had a walkway along its landing platforms carved with battle scenes that seemed to move as you walked along and the light shifter over the metal. The Artisan District, along with indoor art galleries, had holo-arrays you could fly through, that would interact with you as you flew along. My favorite one was a flock of stratofalcons, since flying near real ones is too dangerous.
I hope it's possible to recreate at least some of those places from records in the archives. It won't be as good as having the originals, especially of the really ancient ones, but bringing some of it back in some way would be a relief.

also, from the Fan Cont Ask thingy Roster Brainstorm
Roster: where is x character in this AU? Who are they, what are they doing?
Finally finished this one! I got halfway done with Brainstorm and then decided to do his roommates too, because background characters are fun.
Brainstorm is an excitable, clever youngling, happy to be a student at the JAAT but always setting his sights for more. He’s going to be the most famous (or infamous) scientist on Cybertron someday, and these pesky school rules are just getting in his way. His roommates have long since learned to step back when he gets going, as he’ll likely bat them on the helm with his waggling wings without even noticing. He wants to push the limits, even as a student, and gain some notoriety so that he’ll draw the attention of some premiere apprenticeship opportunities. The high-caste physicist Quark is the one he hopes to be mentored by, and his celebrity crush on him only heightens that desire. He’ll need to pull off something incredible in order to be noticed, and watching that Decepticon hero Cyclonus use the Blades of Time has given him an excellent idea: time travel.
Mirage got into the Academy from the get go. Of course he did, he’s a well-forged mech from a high-caste family with good connections. Principal Shockwave might say students are accepted on merit instead of class, but Mirage knows this must just be pretense to gain him a broader vote. After all, why would anyone allow idiots and brutes from lower castes into such a prestigious institution? The rude awakening of his fellow classmates from all walks of life hasn’t managed to humble him. His arrogant and framist attitude hasn’t won him many friends, but a student named Cliffjumper seems particularly willing to blow up at him whenever he gets too overbearing.
Bulkhead has never been to Cybertron before! It’s his first time off of Luna 1, and there’s so many new and fascinating things here. He’s rather surprised that he managed to pass the entrance exams, but he scraped by with exceptional marks in a couple areas that made up for his worse subjects. While he’s always known that he’s destined to go into construction and/or demolition because of his frametype, he’s never quite enjoyed it the way he does learning under his teachers. With the opportunity to study anything he’d like, he’s also discovered a love for art he never knew he had before. There’s a group of rowdy younglings who call themselves the Wreckers that he usually hangs out with, a solid presence of joviality that lends a little calmness to so many wild personalities.
Twirl and Combusta are from the same aerie on the other side of Cybertron from Iacon. Combusta is a little grateful that she’s rooming with her aerie-sibling, if only so she can keep an eye on the energetic wildchild Twirl. The two of them do decently in their classes, and Twirl usually drags Combusta into her wide social circle. So far their greatest challenge has been surviving Brainstorm’s mad science and Mirage’s framism.
Here’s some cropped pics so you can see them better!

The Mystery of the Transformer Decoys, Parts 4-6: A Place Called Slammer’s And Not A Pog In Sight
So, fun fact: the PDF I have is the print version of the ‘zine. As in, it’s laid out for the final, stapled version. But only halfway- I could read the first two parts without any trouble, and then all of a sudden things were flipped out of order. Thank god for context clues, otherwise I’d be completely lost. The layout makes sense, since this was, y’know, a ‘zine sent through the mail, so I probably should have seen this coming.
Going into Part 4, written by Alex Smith, we find Nightbeat at Slammer’s Old Oil House, where he, in turn, has found this next lead, Scrounge. He gets the guy’s attention in the most sensual way he can think of.
That was completely unnecessary and you know it.
He buys the guy a drink, sidles up next to him, and immediately asks whether or not he saw Megatron taking a stroll. Scrounger denies it at first, not because he’s intimidated, but because he’s fully intending on getting a free night of boozing it up.
And all this nonsense is happening in a place calling friggin’ Slammers. Am I being queer-baited right now? Is this a predatory/opportunistic gay joke? I don’t know enough about Smith here to make any sort of judgement on his authorial intent, but this story was originally published in 2002, which doesn’t particularly bode well.
Nightbeat doesn’t feel like playing this game, so he tells Scrounge to spill the proverbial beans before he gets a fat lip. Scrounge asks that Nightbeat keep this on the down-low, because talking to a private investigator is sort of dangerous when you work for the mob, then tells his story.
A couple nights before, he’d heard a sound- a rather Turbofoxy sound- and had gone to investigate, finding himself face to face with Megatron digging through the trash. Which is a decidedly very weird thing for him to be doing, since he’s, well, Megatron. He’d growled at Scrounge then used his friggin’ 80-foot vertical leap to get on the roof and run away.
It’s late at this point, and Nightbeat’s ready for some shut-eye, so he takes what he gets, slips Scrounge a little money for his trouble, notes that the guy has a bag at his feet that’ll probably factor into the story later on, then heads towards home.
When Nightbeat gets back to his car, he takes a gander at what he swiped from Scrounge’s bag, finding that he’s grabbed a Turbofox brain. Gross.
Over at Wingspan’s place, he’s hard at work doing crimes against nature as he tinkers around with those skulls Nightbeat brought him. He gets a call from the guy shadowing Nightbeat, who informs him of the scene we just saw. Wingspan, not wanting anyone to figure out the connection between the Megatron Decoy and himself, tells the shadow to kill them both, and make it messy.
He gets a little worked up over how close of a call this has become, kicking over a table in his anger. This need to find that Decoy before someone else does.
Megatron isn’t going to be happy about this.
Oh hey, speak of the devil.
No, actually, this is the Decoy, which Nightbeat just ran into in his hab-unit of all places, because the thing broke in through the window. It’s sniffing around, taking in the scene and not liking it very much, because it’s growling almost constantly. Nightbeat’s feng shui must be totally off.
Then Scrounge gets thrown through the room, looking beat to hell.
In the middle of this part we take a reading break to feature some art from Andrew Borkett and James Wilson.
Here’s our Megatron Decoy digging through the trash, which is just filled to the brim with little references. We’ve got several severed heads, one of which is pretty clearly supposed to be one of the fifty times Optimus died in the Marvel comics. There’s a womens’ restroom sign, someone’s high school career, and this:
Someone threw computer god in a trashcan. I’m pretty sure that means they won’t be getting into heaven.
The other image is Sunstreaker ripping his face off.
No, you don’t get any context for this. That comes later.
Moving on to Part 5, written by Miles Reid, we get a closer look at Scrounge and his condition- he’s actually not that bad off, just looks horrible.
We can’t worry about that right now though, because the guy who attacked him is here, and proceeds to punch Nightbeat clear across the room.
It’s Grimlock. Or rather, something that appears to be him. He grabs Scrounge, and Nightbeat, knowing how to read a bad situation, high-tails it out of there.
He’s running down the empty streets of Iacon, the Grimlock-thing giving chase. The Megatron thing comes out of nowhere and starts attacking the Grimlock thing, clawing at each other with their hands. Clearly this situation has gotten out of control. Nightbeat’s looking for someone, anyone on the Security Forces to help him out here, since no one else will be out at this hour- there’s a curfew, you see.
He finds them; or rather, they find him, blasting laser fire into the Decoys until they’re little more than smoking scrap on the road. The Security Forces members, obviously and understandably wary of the whole situation, tell Nightbeat to stay still or they’ll fire. Nightbeat doesn’t do that.
No, instead he runs over to the corpses, rips their brains out, puts said brains into a subspace pocket and bolts. All because he doesn’t want to give the case over to the authorities.
Nightbeat, sweetheart, you’re such a fucking weirdo, and I love you for that.
Over at Wingspan’s place, Pounce has good news and bad news; the good news is that their rouge Megatron unit isn’t going to be an issue anymore. The bad news is that Nightbeat and Scrounge are still alive.
Wingspan isn’t exactly thrilled by this update, and orders that the two be taken out by any means necessary. They’re going to send out a squad of these Decoys to go after them- Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, Trailbreaker and Tracks. They’re going to need more brains at this rate, and Wingspan tells Pounce to call Brainstorm for a fresh supply.
Yeah, Brainstorm’s in this. And he’s working for the Decepticons. Unwittingly this time, but still.
Back with Nightbeat, he’s wound up at Getaway's, Scrounge in tow, having been moving through the sewer system to get there. Getaway doesn’t really want Nightbeat to track the mess into his home, but lets them in. Nightbeat promptly dumps Scrounge on Getaway, throws the brains at him to decrypt, then climbs into his bed and falls asleep without so much as a cursory wipe-down. Nightbeat, this isn’t how we treat our friends.
When he wakes up, Getaway’s not gotten terribly far with the brains, so he’s called in a friend- Chromedome. Nightbeat decides to go meet the guy himself, still not bothering to take a fucking shower, reasoning that the Institute of Higher Programming will have somewhere for him to clean up and that they don’t have time for him to do it beforehand. Nightbeat must be one of those guys who use the shower as a think tank and loses track of time.
They get to the Institute and Getaway brings Chromedome the goods, while Nightbeat takes the walk of shame to the nearest cleaning station.
While this is happening, one of the Decoys- the Sunstreaker one- walks up to the reception desk and asks to see Nightbeat. When it’s told that he’s in a meeting with Professor Chromedome, and can’t be disturbed at present, it says it’ll be back. I didn’t realize Chromedome had his teaching degree. Good on him.
Speaking of the professor, it looks like Chromedome’s found something- a voice modulation slapped into the Turbofox brains- alterations to take them from mindless animals to puppets.
Back at reception, Nightbeat’s approaching the desk to ask where the hell a guy can get a bath around here, when the Decoys spot him and attack.
In Part 6, which is written by James Roberts, we get a taste of backstory as Nightbeat wonders just how the hell his life got to this point.
Back when he was a fresh young thing, still not yet named- we’re sticking to the A/00007 backstory for this, same as in Eugenesis- his programmer told him he had a good head on his shoulders and he was destined to do great things, which inspired him to go his own way and become a P.I. This programmer was Wheeljack. So I guess Wheeljack is basically Nightbeat’s dad in this, which is nice.
The only reason he’s thought of this little aside is because Wheeljack is among the Decoys present and trying to kill him. It’s always a stressful time when your dad is attempting to end you.
Oh, how I missed that prose. Look at that characterization, those metaphors. I’m surprised I haven’t seen him write more first-person POV, it really suits his style.
…Never change, James. Never change.
We get a summary of everything that’s happened so far in the story, with all the flare and care one’s come to expect from Roberts, including what those mysterious Matrix-powered skulls did to Nightbeat.
Intense indeed.
Nightbeat muses on a facsimile of Zeno’s paradox as the door is broken down by the Decoys. The paradox is this- how can one thing reach another, if the distance between both is always halved? Applying it to life, could a spark, or even these mysterious skulls, be halved to create two living things? Four? Eight? More? He wonders if he’ll ever get the chance to figure that little conundrum out for himself, or if it’s too late.
This is easily some of the best writing in the story so far. We’ve gotten some good lines from the others, but this is just solid all the way through.
It’s just too bad this is the shortest part of this story.
