Religion is so difficult to talk about because it's a minefield, for so many reasons to so many people. It's seldom the theology or philosophy that's truly at stake, it's more often the institutions that coalesce around beliefs and harden them to the point of inflexibility, then seek validation as eternal metaphysical truths. That overwhelming desire for validation is the driver for so many abuses that have been committed in the name of religion (usually monotheism.)

I've long been curious what powerful psychological need drives that dynamic. I suppose it is something deep-seated in human psychology, something existential. The need to anchor one's sense meaning in a higher purpose so as to avoid the crushing emptiness of nihilism. So many people allow themselves to be defined by what they fear.

I am deeply curious about the borderline between life and death, and have spent the whole of my adult life seeking to understand it. I walked away from my cradle religion (Fundamentalist Christianity) because my questions made them uncomfortable. I explored what science and other religions had to say about the question of life and death, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with any of their answers so I have continued to seek understanding on my own, independent of any religion. I've found better understanding, but it's hard to discuss with others because of the well-established fault lines that have done so much damage to so many people. It seems everybody has some kind of baggage about religion.

I believe wisdom is worth pursuing but that it's best to regard all insights as provisional, subject to revision as new evidence comes to your attention. That approach is antithetical to any kind of institutional religion.
