kinda agree kinda disagree. i do think it wouldve been possible for mlvn to work but i wouldnt say hopper taking el in is the problem i think ud kinda just have to rewrite alotta their interactions with some small things in the beginning but with a completely different dynamic in the later seasons (sidenote: honest to god if theyd just written hopper a bit better i would fucking love him as el’s dad like i love the found family trope and i do think they go well together but with the way he acts in s3 + the way their fight that culminates in el’s meltdown and him breaking the tv in s2 just yeah they rlly could’ve been done better)

I was gonna make a post a whole seperate about Peter but I'll just say what I was gonna say here because you covered alot of it

For the first part; I just said that because we don't know if what Remus said about Snape taking any chance to curse James was true. Although I believe that James definetly stopped the pranks in seventh year, I don't believe that there were no instances where James would do something to Snape when Lily wasn't around. I think I only really got this idea from this line Sirius says, "I mean, James didn't take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?" as this line implies that he did indeed start altercations at times (its hard to explain how i think it implies that, but it makes sense in my head). But I still understand what you're saying because there's a higher chance it WAS true, as the information about it came from Remus instead of Sirius (who'd be more likely to try warp the truth so James came out as the good guy) I just didn't want to not cover all the bases. I guess I'd say that by seventh year, it most likely just mellowed out into a proper rivalry between James and Snape where one of them would hex the other (i do think it was mostly snape that started it, but James did from time to time), and they'd have a duel (which, lets be real, James wouldve always won, as theres still that power imbalance between the two that i think would make Snape more erratic and shaky while fighting). If that made 0 sense I'm sorry I kept rewriting it because it felt like I was trying to prove you wrong when I'm just trying to add on my own ideas to what you were saying. Like in an agreement way.

NOW ONTO PETER.

The post I was gonna make was about why Peter was put into Gryffindor. Alot of people seem to think he should've been in Slytherin, but that's wrong.

You aren't sorted into houses solely because of your personality, it also takes into account your values. Peter was obviously bullied before Hogwarts, he would've been an underdog, and he wanted someone to protect him. He values loyalty, so people would stay by his side, and he values bravery, so people would fight for him. But most of all, he enjoyed seeing other people hurt. During SWM we see him physically squirm in excitement at the events, and even moreso when he's looking at James catch the Snitch he keeps throwing around (something something like watching a lion pounce on a gazelle something something). Going back to the Sun descriptor of James, he was like the center of Peters world. Peter was too much of a coward to ever attack someone himself, but he took sadistic pleasure in watching it. James and Sirius were the perfect people for Peter and he knew he needed to stay in their crowd because they brought him protection and entertainment.

But then James stopped, and in turn Sirius stopped, and Peter began getting nervous. which was why he so easily jumped to the next biggest fish when he left Hogwarts and ratted James and Lily out. Ofcourse, he claims he felt guilt around it, but once again, he's a coward. He'd never turn against Voldemort, because Voldemort isn't a mere highschool bully, he's so much more powerful than the Marauders were. It would've been whiplash for Peter to go from seeing other kids getting hexxed in the halls to seeing people murdered infront of him. And he was offered to join Voldemort I'm exchange of information when he was YOUNG.

Now, if James was to have continued bullying Snape, I still don't think Peter would enjoy it as much. I see him as taking more pleasure in the public humiliation of a person than just doing it secretly. He would've taken this as a sign of cowardice, which he wanted to avoid, and would've lost respect for James. I think Sirius would've been more keen on pranking people but it would've been light enough that Peter wouldn't care as much.

This post was made in request from one of my best friends who I had a long discussion with last night about James Potter being an asshole so it's a bit messy. Anyway here

There's a specific way the Marauders fandom seem to characterise James that appears to be a fanon made thing. It's never pointed towards in canon, infact it's probably more so denied in canon, but I want to talk about how it actually works as a descriptor... sort of.

"James is like the sun"

Now, to describe someone as being "sunny" is to call them happy, optimistic, positive, and upbeat. They wouldn't be quick to anger, they'd often be told they light up a room just by being there, and they'd just be incredibly likable.

I just don't think this version of the term fits him. We see in Snapes Worst Memory that when Sirius and James get bored after their DADA exam, James first idea is to bully Snape. And it's obvious this isn't the first time they've done it so spontaneously. This isn't something a sunny person would do, a more realistic depiction of what a sunny James would say is "Let's go grab our brooms!" Or "Lets go take a dip in the lake!". The first fits the fact he was literally fidgeting with a snitch before he got up to walk over to Snape, and the second one fits more with the rather spur of the moment, fun-chasing personality we see him with. They wouldn't be malicious, and he'd be so hyped up about it that even if Sirius didn't want to do either, he'd get excited anyway. And also, you can't describe someone as a sunny person just because they made a large group of people laugh when it's at the cost of another (and not from something like a prank, which I'd accept as being un malicious if it affected more than 4 people at a time), because that's not being sunny, that's just being a dick.

But even so, I do think describing James as "like the sun" is a better version. Because it can mean something different from being "sunny".

A sun is a star, infact it's the largest star in our galaxy! For someone to be "like the sun", they could be the center of attention. James may enjoy doing things like "pranking" Snape (which lets be real, was clearly the best target for them simply because he was a nobody Slytherin who had one friend, meaning noone would care if they did bully him) for the sole purpose of people thinking he's hilarious. Doing big stunts in the Greathall or strutting about Hogwarts like he owns the place, because he feels like a king.

But the sun also does other things. Firstly, it burns. It's an angry flame that destroy eveything. much like James! Harry describes Lily as looking at James with utter hatred, and he can't blame her for the fact. Then James proceeded to Bully Snape even after he got together with Lily, but this time more secretively. No more flashy pranks or hexes in the hallways when Lily is on his hip. He got what he wanted, and he continued to burn those around him anyway. Also its knowledge that he would just hex people in the hallway for fun.

Another thing the sun is is "overwhelming". Its too much to take in, and it gets incredibly annoying at times, but you know you'd miss it when winter comes so you would never wish for it to be gone. This one is a bit more of me being speculative and assuming things than actually pointing shit out from the books... but i think this is reminiscent to how Remus felt. He was Bullied as a child, he had no friends, mixed with how he was a Werewolf? Weesh.. So by the time he was at Hogwarts, he was most likely expecting to just be lonely again. But no! He met Peter, and he wasn't popular but Remus would've been glad to just talk to somebody. Then he met James (and Sirius, but this aint about him), and by god, he practically shone. To Remus, being friends with someone who seemed so popular and excited and loud would've been an extremely far away dream. Then James asked him to be his friend and why would Remus turn that down.

Then you cut to further into Hogwarts, and it becomes obvious James was more of a troublemaker than Remus expected. And sure, watching another person get bullied when he knows he used to be that person might be cowardly, but what was he supposed to do besides a little reprimanding? James offered him a hand when he had nothing, then the rest of the Marauders proceeded to become unregistered Anamagi for him aswell, and seemed more than happy to help out during the full moon. If he really did give them in trouble, they could get angry (he knows how quick to anger Sirius and James can be), and they might even dislike him enough to tell everyone about his furry secret. So he decided to keep playing blissfully ignorant, because they "aren't always like that".

So yeah. He's overwhelming the way the sun is! He can just be too much sometimes, and is honestly a little scary, but you know you'd need him.

ANYWHOO. yeah. That was the post! I'm not sure if it makes sense as I did just barely wake up but ya know, I had my brain juices flowing. If there's anything that doesn't make sense or you can add anything on please do because I think I had alot more to say when I was talking about it last night but I can't remember currently.

Draco found it when he was cleaning out the attic. It was sitting in an old wooden chest in the back. It was a short, but heavy rectangular device with a large circular platform and a thin stick attached.

"Harry?" Draco called, frowning at the...thing in his hands.

He heard footsteps before Harry stuck his head into the room. "Yes, love? Everything alright?"

"Yes, but what's this?" Draco gestured to the object.

Harry's eyes fell on it and then widened. "Oh," he said. "Right."

"What is it?"

"That's a record player," Harry explained, coming closer to look at it with Draco. "It's a Muggle device. It was Sirius's."

"What does it do?"

"It, er. Plays records. You know? Like a vinyl record?"

Draco shook his head, and Harry smiled. "Let me show you," he said, stepping past Draco to look through a pile Draco hadn't gotten to yet. Harry frowned in concentration, flipping through a stack of some square, thin things Draco hadn't ever seen before.

"Got it!" Harry grinned, pulling out one item in the stack. Draco's eyebrows went up at the image of four men with long hair, their faces shadowed.

Harry walked back over, reached into what Draco now saw was a flap, and pulled out something circular, thin, stark-black. "This is called a record," Harry explained. "When I put it on the player and set it up properly, it'll play music."

"Oh," Draco said with awe, watching as Harry carefully put the record onto the player, turned the device on, and lifted the stick to settle it onto the record. "What are you going to play?"

Harry grinned. "You'll see. Just listen."

Draco fixed his eyes on the record player as the speakers flared to life with the first sounds of the song.

'Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality. Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see.'

Harry suddenly made a fist and brought it under his mouth like a microphone, mouthing the words. 'I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy. Because I'm easy come, easy go. Little high, little low.'

Draco watched in amusement as Harry spun around and continued his silent song. 'Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me. To me.'

Something in Draco's chest tightened. "Harry," he whispered. "What is this?"

"Shh," Harry whispered back. "I'll stop dancing. You just listen."

By the time the song ended, Draco had tears in his eyes, and he saw the same when he looked at Harry.

"What do you think?" Harry asked, his voice soft.

Draco let out a long breath. "That was...Play it again."

They spent hours in the attic, foregoing cleaning up for the rest of the night. They danced around and sang the lyrics at the top of their lungs, with Draco asking Harry to play the song over and over again, which Harry was only too willing to oblige. Draco stumbled over the words at first, but by the end of the night, he was matching Harry word for word and note for note.

When they were finally out of breath, and Draco had a near-pounding headache, they both flopped onto the ground, limbs spread out like starfish.

Harry reached over and laced their fingers together. "Tomorrow," he said, "I'll play you ABBA."

transgender remus is interesting to think about. like you could go the classic “transitioned socially at a young age and goes stealth his whole life” OR you could fucking mix it all up with his already present identity issues surrounding being a werewolf, maybe not wanting to come out and suffering in silence because he’s already caused his parents and the school so much trouble already.

the marauders are the first he would come out to, obviously, and it would be after they find out he’s a werewolf. i love the idea of remus just getting wasted in like 5th year and then going “man FUCK being a girl i hate this so much. lads please promise me you wont call me a girl ever again i cant stand it.” and sirius & james dont even question it (peter would ask like “so youre actually a man now? this isnt just a prank? alright then.”) because theyre all right there with remus in drunkness. sirius 100% says like “i am with you all the way. i bet you’d fit into james’s uniforms instead of the women’s ones. i’d offer mine but youre actually a giant. btw what fucking name do i call you besides moony?”

its at that point that remus, terribly boring even when drunk, insists on being called john. this is the birth of his middle name. everyone hates using it because he is definitely not a john but theyre very nice about hiding the winces until he comes up with a better name probably a month later (which is remus because he thinks its terribly funny and terribly ironic)

remus, upon waking up on the floor of the boys’s dormitories wearing james’s uniform and a headache, decides to go with it. its not like he has to come out to his parents, hes okay with just his friends knowing and being supportive. lily, too, because they had shared a dormitory up until that point and she wouldve wanted to know why remus was moving his entire trunk and all his personal items into the boys dorms. upon hearing the story, lily scrunches her nose and says “you really dont look like a john. maybe david?” but otherwise went on to treat him as another one of the boys.

remus isnt self conscious about the uniform change or the way his friends are loudly correcting people on his names and pronouns. hes really pleased, actually, especially at the continuously creative ways they do it. james & sirius have a great time trying to convince the entire school that remus has always been a boy, what are you talking about? are you okay? maybe you should ask the divination professor about it if youre having odd visions. its very amusing to remus, honestly.

most teachers are used to this sort of thing from them and go along with it once they see remus encouraging it. a select few (including slughorn) are bewildered and dont change their language but its not the end of the world.

at one point lily stops him in the common room and asks if he would want a haircut, she’s only asking because she personally wouldnt trust any of his friends in being anywhere close to competent with haircutting and lily’s a bit experienced with it from having a sister & a best friend with long hair & has done her own hair a few times. remus agrees and while his hair wasnt that long, it feels like a weight off his shoulders when he can feel the breeze on the back of his neck.

sirius black has a terrible problem because now the person he was already crushing on mildly is a whole ass dude and is sleeping in his room with him and looks really cute with his new short hair and that’s A Lot for a teenage boy. its also a lot because remus gets like, 10x more confident than he has ever been just from being able to live as himself, which makes sirius actually fall in love way faster.

when remus goes home for the holidays, his dad nods approvingly at his haircut and his mom wont stop running her fingers through it and even though he hates that he’s forced himself to put on a dress and respond to his deadname and the wrong pronouns, its still nice. he doesnt think his dad would understand, and his mom would try but struggle with it too, so he doesnt come out to them until after graduating in 7th year right before he’s planned to move into sirius’s new flat. and it works for him, like that.

throughout their years at hogwarts. it's actually 500k, not 400, and not :) completed :) yet :))), but it's so detailed and well-executed. it's called "the lost generation" by Jennbob on ao3, and while I can't, in good conscience, recommend starting a 500k uncompleted fic, it's just SO. GOOD. like, if it was published as a prequel series I wouldn't bat an eye. And NO, def not a snape apologist, sorry to your mom but that's just a no. Thankfully, I did pass out for thirteen hours (3/??)
