James’ heart clenches in sympathy. “Fuck, Moons. That’s rough. Anything we can do? Shit, sorry, Si, should’ve asked if that’s okay with you.” 

“Of course, it’s okay, love.” Fine, James knows Sirius tosses the endearment around casually and without a deeper meaning, but a little thrill shoots up James’ spine every time he hears it, regardless. “Yeah, Reg and I have a complicated history, and we don’t see eye to eye on everything, never will, I’m afraid, but he’s my brother. Any way I can help, I’m there. Just say the word. Either of you,” he impresses on Remus, jaw set to emphasize he means every word. 

“Thanks for the offer.” Remus’ subdued voice suggests a lack of faith in their power to fix the situation. “But maybe Reg would be better off without—” Before he has the chance to finish, Sirius steps into his personal space, looming over him. 

“Now listen to me, Remus. My brother chose you. And Regulus is many things, condescending, ambitious, acerbic as fuck, take your pick, but he’s not an idiot, and he knows his mind. He’s also aware of the risks—yes, all of them, including your furry little problem. So don’t pull this crap with him or me if you don’t want to piss me off. Don’t pretend to be noble when, in truth, you’re using it to mask your bloody cowardice. Reggie drives me up the wall sometimes, but I won’t see him hurt. Not by you. Not like this. Are we clear?”

Remus gulps,  visibly shrinking under Sirius’ glare, but James doesn’t have the mental capacity to contemplate his reaction when Sirius is all he can see. Why did it take him so long to realize that he’s always been the main character in every scene of James’ life, relegating everyone else to a supporting role? Also, James must admit, Regulus was on to something. Watching your crush tear a strip off someone? Yep, definitely a turn-on.
