Agfa Compact
turned on and with the flash removed
#favorite camera#for 35 mm film#an irresolvable mishmash of retro and military style#from the early 80's#it uses AAA batteries#most importantly you can set the ISO of the film manually (25-400!)#so you can use it with “exotic” films and cheap films that are not DX coded (e.g. Fomapan)#or you can easily overexpose your expired film as needed

Cei Bach. Olympus Trip 35. Ilford Ortho Plus.
Cei Bach (Welsh for Little Quay) is a secluded beach not far from New Quay. A beach where I used to visit with my grandparents every time I visited it was strange to go back alone as an adult with a camera. Due to the time of year the place was quite deserted. During the summer months this stretch of beach is popular with those staying at nearby caravan parks. However I did chat to a few hardy dog walkers.
I was quite lucky with the light and love the contrast offered from the roll of Ilford Ortho Plus.

Cartier Declaration review - The Favourites - Jean-Claude Ellena; 1998
Surely, one of the greatest releases of the final decade of the 20th century: Jean-Claude Ellena's Declaration for Cartier.
— Back in the 80s, in the UAE, a soap was launched onto the market. Little did we know that it came from a brand that had actually been established in the early 1950s, but there you go: the apparent newness of everything was part of the excitement of living in the Middle East in those days. The soap was called Zest — if memory serves, there was a green one and a yellow one — and it was…

I just bought my first non-phone camera (Canon PowerShot SX70 HS). I travel a lot and want to take great photos of the landscapes I see. What would you recommend for someone who is essentially a novice? So far I've been afraid to change the settings from "auto" but I want to use the full capabilities of this camera!
I'm really tired and I don't have the energy to explain everything, so I'm going to give you the secret recipe to landscape photos. This works 80-90% of the time unless there are challenging variables to account for.
Put camera on tripod or stable surface. Set timer to a delay of 1 second. Put camera in Av or Aperture Priority Mode. Set f-stop to f/11. Set ISO to lowest setting. (Usually 100.) Let the camera decide the shutter speed automatically. Focus 1/3 of the way into your framing. Press the button, stand back, and let the camera take the shot.
Tripods are a pain in the butt to carry around, but they open up a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to landscape shots. You can also try a little bean bag weight, railings/ledges, or those gorillapod things.
If I am feeling better tomorrow, I will reblog this and explain why these settings usually work and add some additional tips along with settings for when you can't use a tripod or stable surface.
But this should give you something to start with.

Dawn and Golden Hour
This is what I set out to do two weeks ago, but the fog had other ideas.
I got to Downtown and the West End Overlook about an hour before sunrise, or the start of dawn. TIL there's three different dawns. I'm starting to take photos at the beginning of 'astronomical dawn.'
This one is wallpapered for your enjoyment.
And a few more. I swapped out between the 28-70mm f/2.8D and the 80-200mm f/2.8D here. I decided today's challenge would be to level the camera, keep the fountain center of the shot, and compose just wit the zoom.
Moving on to the Duquesne Incline overlook as dawn shifts to sunrise and the beginning of the Golden Hour. The 80-200mm lens isn't all that viable if I want to get the traditional DOWNTOWN shot. These are all the 28-70mm.
Again, camera is level, composing with just zoom and pan.
As previously, the autofocus started misbehaving again. I may need to have that lens serviced. So this last one at this spot is with the nifty 50mm f/1.8D.
FYI: everything to this point has been on the tripod at aperture priority f/5.6, ISO 200.
And finally, I move to the Grandview Ave. overlook. I've got the 80-200mm back on, and gone freehand at f/2.8, auto ISO with a minimum shutter speed of 1/125. That's about as slow as my 55 year old hands can do without camera shake. We're now well into Golden Hour.
The hardest part is it's an hour's drive each way to get here. So I spend more time traveling than I do taking the shots.
And the traditional shoutout to @sirfrogsworth for the inspiration.

Phyllobates Doing A Hongi
Phyllobates bicolor or black-legged poison dart frogs sharing a Maori greeting in in their tank in Reptopia. Photo credit: Eleanor Chua.
The tank was very dimly lit and the ISO had need to be pushed to 6400 to get a shutter speed of a mere 1/80 second for this 300mm crop. Thankfully, the image came out sharp although details weren’t that great.

Olympus Trip 35. Ilford Ortho Plus.
Compared to the Lomo LC-A the Olympus Trip 35 has many film speed settings. When I received it back from being refurbished I realised I had forgotten how versatile it was in that department.
As one such setting was 80 iso I thought it would be wise to load a roll of Ilford Ortho Plus.

Computer skills need to be part of law school. 80% of the law students and baby lawyers I meet don't know about directory trees, can't check file sizes and formats and thus can't figure out why they can't email the 1.2GB ISO to opposing counsel and can't open it on their iPhone, are absolutely helpless when the evidence requires them to download a codec to view it, think they need to install AVG Antivirus, etc etc. Does law school think they're all going to have admin staff to handle this shit for them the moment they pass the bar? Malpractice factory.
