Hermes Terre d’Hermes
Hermes Terre d’Hermes
Nose: Jean-Claude Ellena
notes: orange, grapefruit; pepper, pelargonium, flint; vetiver, cedar, patchouli, benzoin
By now, you probably know Terre D’Hermes, even if you don’t know you do. It’s ubiquitous. Jean-Claude Ellena has the extremely valuable talent of pulling off airy minimalism in perfume — ie, more cynically, making a small formula budget smell good. And Terre d’Hermes does smell good.
It has a nice, light-stone, dry feeling, from vetiver, with a lot of airy radiant aromachemicals and little sunlit glints of citrus winking in and out.
Soon it settles into plain vetiver with a particularly sheer and synthetic texture.
Honestly, Terre d'Hermes is vetiver with training wheels. It's diluted with abstract "perfuminess" and a bit of citrus, so it's more likable than a more intensely bitter-dry vetiver like Encre Noire, and it's easy to find. Terre d'Hermes is solidly good: not exotic, not extreme, not awe-inspiring, but smooth and seamless and shining. Nothing to complain about.
(Nominally masculine, but easily unisex if you want it to be; it's just a dry, light, woody scent without a trace of anything decorative.)

Frederic Malle Heaven Can Wait Review - Jean-Claude Ellena; 2023
Brand new from Frederic Malle and Jean-Claude Ellena: the retro-loving #HeavenCanWait.
It is to his credit that Frederic Malle continues to make us wait a whole year between new releases: he could so easily have given in to the temptation to churn out a half-baked creation every few months or so. And funnily enough, the passage of time is alluded to in his latest piece of work, Heaven Can Wait, created by the man behind some of his most memorable scents, Jean-Claude Ellena. Here’s…

hey queen. you have perfume recs for me? I don't really like super sweet scents but I love your taste in well. everything so I'll take anything you suggest <3
hiii hello! i’m not a big fan of super sweet scents either, i prefer muscular woody or spicy notes with a hint of vanilla. you know the scents that are unisex but lean more masculine... my personal favorite perfume that i always recommend is tobacco vanille by tom ford, let me tell you it’s the best mixture of spicy and sweet and it really makes a statement. wearing this scent makes me feel more attractive.. more mysterious and much more confident! there’s just nothing like this out there.
some other perfumes that strike just the right balance –

Hermes Eau de Neroli Dore
Nose: Jean-Claude Ellena
notes: neroli, bitter orange, saffron
Lovely, floaty neroli + bigarade in the top; mildly unpleasant, overly soft/purse-y iris bottom.
Very short-lived.

favorite perfume brands? i'm always looking for niche or relatively unknown brands and you seem to have somewhat similar tastes to mine
well my favs arent really unknown im kindof basic to be honest LOL. i looooooooooooooooove hermes theyre my all time fav they can do literally no wrong in my eyes christine nagel and jean-claude ellena are gods among men i think anything from hermes is incredible and they are honestly so underappreciated as a fragrance house. and then i am a diptyque girly too i just love a refined brand aesthetic in general and fragrances that are made with like restraint seemingly yknow… i also obviously love frederic malle and serge lutens as unapproachable as a lot of their frags are they are so artistic and when they hit they hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also love kerosene theyre a bit more heavy handed but so interesting. ihave also been very intrigued by caswell massey lately i would love to try their almond and rose fragrances they have a very cutesy coquette refined look to their branding. and i am dyyyyying to try the dries van noten frags esp soie malaquais

Cartier Declaration review - The Favourites - Jean-Claude Ellena; 1998
Surely, one of the greatest releases of the final decade of the 20th century: Jean-Claude Ellena's Declaration for Cartier.
— Back in the 80s, in the UAE, a soap was launched onto the market. Little did we know that it came from a brand that had actually been established in the early 1950s, but there you go: the apparent newness of everything was part of the excitement of living in the Middle East in those days. The soap was called Zest — if memory serves, there was a green one and a yellow one — and it was…
