when writing: banter

it’s been super long since i’ve done one of these so let’s pretend i am a super great amazing talented award-winning writer and just hear me out.

i think one of the biggest mistakes with writing banter is that people often mistake a character just being pretentious and annoying with being witty. like your character isn’t witty or dry, they’re pessimistic and cynical in the worst way possible.

additionally, in order to write banter, the characters have to compliment each other in some way if that makes sense ?? (not that anything i say does).

like, two people who don’t have the same humor to some degree are not going to be able to play off each others jokes in the same way two people with the same humour would.

so firstly, how to avoid your characters sounding pretentious? put simply, avoid banter that puts people down negatively— or i should say, at the bare minimum, the person they’re talking to or about should know they’re being facetious.

an example:

character a: “i think i’ll wear the pink gloss today. he said he liked pink, didn’t he?”

character b: “i think you should stop obsessing over what he thinks of you and grow a backbone.”

character a: “oh, but i heard those are hard to come by these days.”

character b: “not if you know where to look.”

this isn’t the best example but it does show that character a knew character b was being facetious and therefore the joke came across as such.

secondly, characters playing off each other!!!!!

i think what gives characters good chemistry, whether platonic or otherwise, is giving them a reason to be around each other. why is it YOUR characters are the ones going back and forth? why does it need to be them? what’s special about them and their situations that they play off each other so well?

if there’s no answer to this… what’s the point? it could’ve been any other character; it didn’t have to be yours.

so what are some things to think about to help with chemistry?

things to consider:

do your characters have any inside jokes?

do their inside jokes come up often? in specific situations?

how long have they known each other? does it play into their comfortability with repartee?

this is a little tricky of a subject but what pop culture references can be made? for example, a jeopardy reference always gets me

is their banter usually based around them and themselves, or is it poking innocent fun at someone else?

how can you build on their environment?

how can you use wordplay to your advantage?

are there any similarities in what they’re going through in their lives?

prompts yay!

“how long do you think it’ll take for them to notice their glasses are on their head?” “give or take a couple years.” “years? i was thinking millennia.”

a response of “i’ll take Things That Never Happened for 500” when the other character says something bogus

or even “i’ll take Things You Should Take Up With Your Therapist for 200”

“okay, FINE, i’m leaving!” “oh, so there is a God?”

“what’s that show? that one… you know? with the…” “anytime now.” “the girl who like, fights crime ??? or something??” “you’ve almost got it.”

it’s raining and the character that likes to point out the obvious (which is so me) says “it’s raining!” and the other character is like “give the guy a medal.”

“wait, you’re getting back with your ex? the carpenter one?” “no, the mailman.” “oh, he was awful.” “yeah, but he always delivered my packages on time.” “… fair.”

literally anything from fleabag for inspiration

remember: banter isn’t always between enemies; it could be between friends who’ve known each other a while, or even strangers who are both waiting for their cup of coffee and go back and forth. for me as a reader and writer, a good banter scene makes you feel smart for both writing it and understanding. it makes you feel like you’re in on a joke with the characters and it’s the type of thing you would read and do that little nose air laugh (if u know u know).

ooh i struggled w my mental health for YEARS (the one good thing that came out of it is that i give good advice lol) n honestly the only thing that helped me was realizing that like. a lot of my issues were unfixable (like issues w my parents) but i had some things that i had a little bit of control over

i just wrote a list of ALLLL the issues in my life and ignored what was unfixable (parents, bullying, etc) and i focused on what was treatable (acne, grades, etc) and i started paying attention to those. i started trying to do skincare, i started trying to commit to working out, i started trying to commit to studying. key word: trying. i kept giving up, babes, kept going back into the deep end, but hey im trying arent i?

if one method fails i dont give up completely. i let myself cry a little then i find another method. rn the method im picking up is that blog for studying :) maybe thatll help me commit to studying lol cause god knows i need it

like i look around me and think "shit. this needs fixing." so i try my best to fix it. ay its not gonna be perfect from the get go, but we gotta endure.

and as for studying, it can get overwhelming sometimes so try using a pomodoro to time yourself. study in blocks of 25 minutes of work with a 5 minute break in between each block

for what to do in specific, i've missed a lot of content at school (switched schools in september) so i just watch youtube videos and make flash cards while watching, then i go over the flash cards until i've memorized the info. write a question on the front and the answer on the back. then i use the leitner system :D

gohar khan is a rlly good channel on youtube for this stuff, hes got loads of study methods

so then todd asks meeks because meeks is a little less likely to give him outrageous advice and meeks is like, ”dude ur a poet” (todd writes a really sweet poem for neil “todd, ur my bestfriend too!”) and obviously pitts is also there since meeks and pitts are one in two, and he says to dance with him, cuz thats how he asked out meeks (and meeks is like ”what r u talking about, i asked u out??” “that’s not how i remember it, babe”) and so todd borrows their radio and asks neil to dance with him saying he misses it (”aww todd im so glad we’re such close friends that u feel like u can trust me with this”) 

and then charlie is like see my idea was the best but anyway

eventually todd and the anderperry shippers go to knox, but as per my personal headcanon that knox is oblivious, knox is just like “i thought u guys were already besties” 

and then eventually todd goes to cameron, because he tends to be the most practical one even if he’s a little grumpy to be disturbed while studying and he says “just be honest with him. tell him u love him” so todd does and neil says “i love u too, i love all of my friends”

and todd just about gives up because like now he just thinks neil is trying to let him down gently and todd is making him uncomfortable (which isnt true, neil is just an idiot -- as charlie says) and the guys all try to comfort him and encourage him to continue since they know their friend neil and they know he likes todd back

neil notices todd is avoiding him and confronts him and todd is like “no its nothing” and neil calls bullshit, and then says “is it because im in love with you? am i making u uncomfortable? i can’t stop loving you, but i can try to conceal it more, i don’t want to lose u, youre one of my dearest friends”

you and vince had met during the summer back in toronto. the issue with meeting in the summer and in a city you didn't live in was that you shouldn't have let yourself get attached, but you were never good at listening to your own advice.

but it's also how you began dating your boyfriend, so it ended up fine in the end. what wasn't fine was the fact that you both lived in different cities: you in another city in canada for school and vince in st louis for hockey. and as difficult as it was trying to sustain a long distance relationship with a professional hockey player, you both did the best you could to make it work.

and it was moments like these that made everything worth it. you were back home in toronto as school had moved all online but vince had been in vancouver for playoffs for the past few months. he was coming back to toronto for a few weeks to rest before going back to st louis for the next season, and it was the first time you'd seen him in months.

"oh my god I missed you so fucking much" vince said as he engulfed you in his arms. he tackled you in a hug the minute he saw you waiting outside the airport by the car and lifted you off the ground. "I missed you too, babe. sorry about the playoffs" you consoled him once he pulled back to gaze at your face. "it doesn't even matter, the bubble sucked. I'd much rather spend time with you" he said in response, as you could see that he meant it. every time he called you he complained about how hockey wasn't the same without the fans and that it didn't really feel like playoffs. he was honestly happy to be home and with you, even if it was only for a few weeks.

"well we have plenty of time now" you said with a smile as you brought his head down for a much needed kiss. the worst part about long distance was that you couldn't kiss him whenever you wanted, but now you could. vince easily moved his lips against yours and his hands slid down to rest against your lower back as you pulled his body closer.

"and we are not leaving our bed for a whole week. maybe never until I'm forced to go back" vince said in between kisses as he peppered your face with them.

"I can just come with you" you said after a moment. you'd been waiting to drop the new on him, but there was no better time like the present. a confused look appeared on his face as he rose his eyebrows and waited for you to continue. "school's online now. technically I can do it wherever as long as I have internet. that is, if you want me to come?" you added the last part as a question just in case he said no, but you highly doubted it. vince was constantly flying you out to st louis as often as he could, which was nowhere near as much as he wanted.

"are you serious? you're not joking with me are you?" vince asked in disbelief as the widest grin spread across his face and you nodded your head in agreement. "of course I want you to come with me. I always want you with me" he said finally, wrapping you up in his arms again to twirl you around in excitement.

"I love you" he said when your laughter had finally subsided. it wasn't the first time he's ever told you that, but you could see how much he meant it by the way his eyes lit up as he looked at you.

"I love you too" you said with a grin, "now let's get home we have months of sex to make up for"

Hancuff HC Part 1 w/ Izuku and Bakugo

Kirishima

For a while now, Kirishima had noticed you’d been kinda distant

You two had been officially dating for only a few weeks, but you had been friends for quite a while now and he pretty much knew you like the back of his hands

So when you weren’t smiling as much as you used to, weren’t being as happy, and seemed to be more quiet around him, he knew something was up

But everytime he would ask, you seemed to brush it off, as if it wasn't there

“Its okay Kiri, Im fine!” you’d reply, giving him that smile that use to be so much more bright

He really couldn’t figure it out- did he do something wrong? Did he make you mad? Did he say something? WHAT WAS IT?

Poor baby is kinda insecure so he’d instantly be so worried your breaking up with him or something

The day he finally decided he was going to do something was when he was talking to Momo, who was a good friend of yours, wondering if she heard anything from you about your feelings and why you’d been acting so distant

While he was listening to Momo and how she didnt hear about anything from you, he saw you from behind

He noticed that your face fell slightly when you saw him with her, and before he could even say “hi” or ask what was wrong, you instantly walked the other way

Poor Kiri STILL could not understand what was wrong- but he was going to….with the help of his buddies of course!

After class, Kirishima went to Kaminari and told him about his predicament

 since Kaminari is always talking about how he knows women so well, he should know what to do, right?

WRONG

“...so I dont know what do man,” he sighed, “Got any ideas?”

Kaminari looked up thoughtfully, thinking about what Kirishima should do

He then snaps his fingers, a light bulb going off in his head

Kaminari grinned, proud of himself- “Dude, I got the perfect idea!”

Kirishima had asked you to come up to his room-no reason why, just to “hang out”

You smiled sadly at his text, climbing up the stairs to his dorm, thinking about his talk with Momo you had witnessed

You couldn't help it, but you were feeling insecure- Kirishima was such a wonderful and caring person, and even more so as a boyfriend! He was attractive, passionate, hardworking...he was so perfect you couldnt help but think that maybe...you werent as perfect for him as he was for you….

Was there somebody out there better for him? Was he maybe going to find them and leave you? Your heart twinged painfully at the idea, knowing full well you’d be destroyed when-if- that day came

You sighed, preparing yourself to push those feelings down and be happy- you knocked on the door, but, no answer

You stood there for a few moments, wondering what was going on- Kirishima always opened the door so enthusiastically, swinging it open even before your knuckles hit the wood of the frame

You knocked again, but still- no answer. After a few minutes, you got impatient, trying the door knob, which was, surprisingly, unlocked

You creaked the door open, peering into the dark room- it looked completely vacant

Your prayed that this wasn’t some stupid prank his friends were doing on you as you hesitantly walked into the darkness

Your heart fell into your stomach as the door suddenly closed, a cold hand grabbing your wrist

“Oh my god,” you thought frantically, “the villains are here.”

You couldn't even scream, you were so terrified, expecting your ultimate demise when-

“Geez, y/n why are you shaking so bad? You okay babe?” Kirishima asked, his voice full of concern as he turned on the lights

You looked around, adjusting your eyes as you stared at your boyfriend with complete disbelief that he’d do something so cruel to you

“What the hell-No I am not fine Kirishima! Why would you scare me that bad-”

you looked down frantically, your heart still pumping as if you had just sprinted a mile, remembering the cold hand touching your skin

“ what, what's around my wrist?”

 “Oh-I-well-Im sorry-I didnt mean-” he was completely flustered, he didnt know what to do first

Does he tell you sorry and hug you, or just tell you straight out why he did that?

He also feels completely stupid- when Kaminari told him to catch you by surprise, Kirishima didn't mean to scare you in the process

At the time, getting you to his room and handcuffing you in the dark seemed perfectly right- now seeing your terrified face makes him feel like total crap.. He didnt really think that it'd scare you, but now thinking about it, of course it did!

Geez, he was the worst boyfriend ever, he thought to himself, wishing he could kick himself for thinking so dumbly

“If you were into this type of stuff, Kiri, you said, “ your face now completely flushed red, “all you had to do was tell me,” 

You looked down, not able to look him in the eye

He looked at you confused, not understanding at first what you were implying- into what stuff?

He then realized what you meant...he lured you into his room, shut the door on you, and then handcuffed you- now his face was as red as his hair- oh my god, he really screwed up, now you think he’s some creepy wierdo! He literally wanted to crawl into a hole

“Oh my god- y/n- I swear that’s not what this was- Jesus Christ- uh-” he jumbled out, feeling stupider and stupider the more he talked

“Then what is this, exactly?”

“Uh-” he stuttered, his brain feeling fried- god why couldn't he just talk!

You looked at your boyfriend, concern written all over your features. “Kirishima?”

He sighed, looking down at your delicate wrist 

“Baby, please dont be mad,” he asked, his voice now soft, “but I-I noticed lately you’ve been more down in the dumps. I’ve tried to talk to you about it and you brushed it off, but I just know something’s wrong with you, and I just want to make you happy, princess. I don't want to see you sad!”

“So…” he continued, his face a little less red, “I went and talked to Kaminari to see what I should do and he told me to do- this- so you’d have to talk to me…”

You looked at Kirishima’s obviously embarrassed face and couldn't help but giggle from how adorable he was. Yes, you did feel bad for worrying him so much, but it was pretty cute how hard he tried to make you feel better.

And you were also pretty confused- why Kaminari? The dude has gotten laid as much times as Mineta- so practically NONE- 

you mentally told yourself to sit with Kirishima one day and explain Kaminari was NOT the way to go for girl advice

“Thank you, Eiji, for trying so hard,” you thanked sweetly, making him feel a little better, “and you know, your right, I have been feeling down lately…”

You told him everything, every insecurity and doubt you’d been having for the last few weeks

Being the good boyfriend he was, he listened calmly to each and every word, even though he desperately wanted to say how untrue all those thoughts were! He was dating you because he loved you, every perfectly imperfect part of you- if he didnt love you, he wouldn't be with you, plain and simple. But he was already so desperately falling for you he couldn't imagine himself without you...to be honest, he felt the same way sometimes

He instantly wrapped you in a bear hug, feeling terrible for not even knowing this all happening! But he was so happy you finally were able to come out and talk to him, even if it did take a little coaxing

“Oh my gosh y/n Im so sorry you were feeling like that!” he’d say, squeezing you close to him, “I love you so much, I’d never leave you-ever- and you are perfect for me, even if you don't think you are ...please dont ever forget that!”

“Okay Eiji, I wont, I promise!” you laughed, “But you're squishing me!”

He instinctively lets go, allowing you to breathe more properly, “Sorry babe!” He’d chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck

“Could, you...maybe-” you smiled, clanking the handcuffs on their wrists

“Oh geez, sorry!” he’d chuckle nervously, rummaging through his pockets for the key and unlocking it

“Thanks,” you’d smile, rubbing your wrists

Then a thought dawned on you as you were both walking out of his room

“Hey Kiri?” you asked

“Hm?”

“Where did you get the handcuffs?”

“Oh, from Kaminari! He said he just had them lying around, and that it’d be fine if I borrowed  them!” he smiled as if it was the most innocent thing ever

“Wait….” you and Kirishima  thought about this...Kaminari...handcuffs….

“Oh my god, ew!” you’d look down at your wrists as Kirishima realized...why maybe Kaminari had handcuffs…and his face turned beet red

“Im going to go wash my hands... with bleach!” you’d scream out, Kirishima following and trying hard not to laugh at your disgusted face

Todoroki

FInally, hero training class- the one class you actually looked forward to

And the one class where you could star at your crush, Todoroki without being seen

- you sat in the most perfect area-

You were in the back, where Todoroki sat a few rows above to your left, so you could stare at his complexion all class without a single person knowing

It was so hard not too- he was so damn pretty with that perfect red and white part in his hair, those mismatched eyes, his strong jawline-

“...any questions?” Midnight asked the class, everyone seeming to be excited for today’s lesson...except you. You looked completely confused as your trance on Todorki’s face was broken.

“Hey, y/n! You okay girlie?” Mina asked, a giddy smile on her face

“Yeah, totally!” you replied, shaking off the intense gaze you had on Todoroki. “What’d I miss?”

“Oh my gosh you didnt hear!” Mina squealed, “we’re going to do a partner training exercise- the teachers are going to handcuff us to another student, and we have to go through the simulated city with the training bots from the Entrance Exams! Cool, right?!”

“Uh, right!” you said apprehensively- you couldnt think of something more terrifying as a training exercise, but everyone else seemed pretty interested

You gave a glance at Todoroki, noticing his calm demeanor against the wave of hysteria going on in the classroom

“You think we’d be able to pick our own partners?” you asked

“Nah, I dont think that’ll happen, Midnight said the groups are already pre-picked based on abilities…” Mina said, “but if I get Bakugo, I will literally barf!”

You laughed, knowing full well Mina would hate that...she hung out with Bakugo, but she couldnt really stand him without Kirishima at his side to cool him down

You sighed, secretly wishing you didnt get Bakugo either as Midnight read off the names

“Deku….Froppy”

“Iida...Invisible Girl”

“MIna...Bakugo” (at which Mina yelled out “Goddammit!”, making the whole class laugh and Bakugo immediately going into  rant)

Kirishima….Uraraka

Todoroki...y/n…..

Midnight kept on listing out names, not even noticing the total chaos she set off in you

Your eyes shot up, not believing your ears- you and Todoroki- were partners!?

Todoroki looked back at you, his face completely unreadable as your cheeks burst with color

Oh Jesus why did he have to be so pretty?

You gave him a small smile as your face turned red, and he raised his hand, acknowledging your kindness and then instantly turning around

You let out a sigh, feeling your body turn antsy- this training exercise was going to be the death of you

You were now both in the “city”, Todoroki dangerously close to you as you both walked the streets apprehensively, searching for the towering bots that would be coming at any moment

You gave Todoroki a side glance, catching a glimpse of that handsome face

The whole time you guys had not even talked once, making your hopes get crushed slightly- its been 10 minutes! And its like he hasnt even acknowledged your presence...even though you're literally attached to him now

You sighed, trying to not let your self doubt get the best of you-

Todoroki was generally always quiet, this is him just at his finest right? You gave his face another glance, cant helping to admire the scar around his eye that just made your heart swoon

“Is everything alright y/n? You’ve been staring at me for quite some time now,” he asked so nonchalanty

You jumped in shock, feeling your face erupt in red

“I-uh-yeah,actually Im fine!” your voice went up like 10 octaves, making you cringe in disgust

Todoroki turned to you, noticing how red you had gotten

“Y/n?” he asked in that husky voice that made your heart stop beating, “are you alright? Your extremely flushed.” He placed the back of his hand on your forehead, making your face 10x redder

He knows you two are  supposed to be in training, but if your not feeling well, he cant allow you to keep training! That would just be improper

He lets his hand sit there, those mismatched eyes boaring into yours as you bite your lower lip, not knowing what to do- it felt like you were just melting against his touch

“I’ve noticed everytime I see you your very flushed, y/n,” he asked, his voice full of concern, “are you sure you’re truly not sick?”

“Y-yes Todo I promise, Im not sick,” you smiled, your body going haywire- he’s noticed your blushes. God no why!

“Lets just focus on the training simulator,” you tried to change the subject in order to keep your face from getting any warmer, sadly pulling away from his touch

“I- Agreed,” he looked down at the ground, as if something he wanted to say was struggling to come out

You kept trucking forward throughout the city, trying to ignore Todoroki’s presence beside you...it was so intoxicating, God, if you could just look at him again-

“y/n!” Todoroki yelled- you were again in your thoughts, not even noticing the giant ROBOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU

He instantly scooped you up in your arms, activating his ice quirk to allow him to slide away from the giant fist that slammed into the ground where you two stood

Your face instantly erupted in red again, feeling Shouto’s tone muscles through his hero suit as he worked to get you out of danger

He looked down at you, causing your face to become more red

“Y/n, please- I think your sick-”

“Im-Im not sick!” you yelled, exasperated at yourself for becoming such a wreck in front of him. 

But really- how could he be this unaware to your feelings? It was a blessing and a curse to be honest

“You’re cheeks are extremely red, your stuttering, and your vision is clealry impaired- you didnt even see the enemy, y/n! Im going to signal to  Midnight that  we cant continue, you need to go to the nurses’s-”

“No Todo, we are not doing that!” you said slightly stern- hell you’d let this dumb crush make you and Shouto fail!

You both looked at the robot coming at you two- using your quirk, you slowed the robot some, and Todoroki freezed it with his quirk

“Quick- that’ll only hold it for a few minutes,” he replied quickly, you two going into a run

“Are you sure you don’t want me to pick up y/n? It’ll alleviate the pain-”

“Todoroki, for the last time, Im not sick!” you yelled between breathes, exasperated by his blindness to your feelings, “Im acting like this because I like you, okay! I like you alot Shouto.”

You continued running, not even able to look him in the eye- you were a wreck- you just confessed!!

Shouto didnt say anything, letting your words sink in

You- liked him? He couldnt believe it- he knew he was extremely quiet and reserved, especially around you...but he couldn't believe you would like him back. Every since you came to UA he thought you were exceptionally beautiful and absolutely the light of everyone’s life, including his. Your personality was endearing and your smile so gorgeous he couldn't stand it. He wasn’t well with crushes, or girls for that matter, so he just admired you from afar, but he wished he had the courage to talk to you more and just confess himself

“I-I think I might be ‘sick’ too,” he turned to you slightly, smiling, his cheeks slightly flushed red

---------------Meanwhile in the class-------------

Everyone was crowded in the viewing room, watching the monitor’s on the screen, focusing on you and Shouto’s every move

Unknowing to you two, UA had planted mics in the training city you two were in, so everyone heard your confession

A gasp filled the room, the girls squealing in happiness and the boys very confused

Kaminari looked slightly depressed, because he thought you were pretty cute and now he couldn't flirt with you anymore, and Kirishima kept going on about how “manly” it was for you to confess so honestly

Uraraka was squealing onto Deku’s arm about how happy she was you finally said it (as Deku agreed as red as a tomato)

Mina just laughed hysterically

✰ 100% trusts you in everything. daichi isn’t the type to be jealous or controlling on anything. he thinks you have the right to wear anything you want and doesn’t want to take your freedom away. he knows you love him and he loves you :(( loyalty is very important to the both of you, so there is no need to worry about anything!

✰ he loves your honesty. he’s a pretty straight forward person himself, so it doesn’t really bother him. this means you won’t have to stress about anything being hidden in the relationship. the fact that you overthink about that trait you have makes him really sad :// he reassures you every single time and always says the right things to make sure you won’t worry

coming back to this fic after monthsss made me realize how shit and cringe it is and oh my god, you all deserve much better writing. yuck. HOWEVER, i will keep posting it until it's finished ( since id already written the whole thing ) because i do kind of like the ending sooo

clubbing really takes a toll on you, physically and mentally. i didn't even drink but i managed to have a headache by the night. i stumbled through the crowd, approaching the counter and slumping down in the seat. the bartender asked if i needed anything and i only ordered some water. she left to get it. 

my phone buzzed with a text from my dad, saying he might not be home tonight because of work. "oooh, that's exciting," said daniel, glancing at the text and sliding into the seat next to mine. he asked the bartender for something that sounded pretty intense and i gulped down my water.

"live a little," daniel urged, offering me the dark liquid but i shook my head. "ugh, you're so annoying and uptight." i rolled my eyes.

"thanks. that's sweet."

"kiss me."

"no."

"why?" daniel asked, pouting. 

"cause you're drunk as fuck and i hate the taste," i told him, trying to walk away but daniel grabbed my hand, turning me around. i pulled my arm away from him with a frown. "will you stop following me around like a lost puppy?"

"yeah, i know," i said, reaching for my phone and showing it him. "you probably can't read but you know what says? 17 missed calls and 51 unread messages..." daniel grinned sheepishly but i wasn't finding it funny. "i was right next to you, daniel... i get that's it kinda dark in here but there's no way you could have missed me." 

daniel stuck out his bottom lip. "i just didn't want you to get lost, that's all. there's lots of creepy dudes here, they'll pick up anything with boobs." i groaned.

"stop. this isn't funny, it's an obsession and i don't like it." 

i tried to leave again and again daniel tried to pull me back but this time jojo got in between us, noticing the tension. "what the hell is going on here?" she asked, her voice trembling like she had just finished crying. i looked at her. her eyeliner was slightly smudged which gave me the answer right away.

"you only love me when you're drunk," i murmured and then jojo convinced daniel to go away for little while which he finally complied. the two of us sat on the curb outside the club, just on the sidewalk where we could still here the muffled sound of the music inside.

"what's wrong?" i asked her. she's usually the one comforting me and giving advice, so it was strange to be switching roles.

"boys are so complicated," she answered, blowing a puff of smoke into the dark of the night. "were you the one who gave my number to jinyoung?"

i nodded. "i'm sorry if i wasn't supposed to... i thought he was cute and you're cute and things could maybe..."

"it's not that," said jojo, taking a swig of the bottle she was holding. "did you know he loves me? he told me that."

"i just assumed..." i shrugged. jojo buried her face in her hands and i furrowed my brows. "jojo... you don't have to cry about it. you can choose the man you like... it doesn't have to be either." 

she sniffed, looking up and wiping her tears. "i know... i just feel so bad. i just like to fuck around and stuff but what if i'm actually catching feelings? nick called me babe.... what's it like to be in a relationship?"

i chuckled. "it's not all that... trust me, i feel like i'm not even in a proper one." we both laughed a little and the air felt lighter. "what are you going to do?"

jojo shrugged. "what i always do... nothing. besides i'm receiving clout from hanging out with these rappers so," she laughed and the smell of cigarettes just filled my nostrils. "why do i have to be so hot that boys are just tripping over themselves for me?" we talked for a little bit about how boys suck but also about which ones we'd smash because they can be fine sometimes too.

"it's fun when you're around," jojo told me with a smile. "daniel really bought out the wild side of you." i nodded and jojo leaned over, pressing her chapped lips against mine for a fleeting second before pulling away. 

"heyyyy, is it too late for a show?" daniel chuckled, walking over to us. "oh come on, keep going, don't mind me." 

"you're disgusting," jojo said, shaking her head and shoving him as he tried to put his arm around both of our shoulders. 

"i gotta go home anyway," i informed the both of them. "my head hurts and we got school... i haven't finished homework yet." 

"good luck with that," said jojo, brushing off her jeans and walking back into the club after ruffling me and daniel's hair. 

daniel rested his head on my shoulder. "i can drop you home." i sighed.

"you're too drunk to drive."

"we can test our limits." 

i ended up driving myself home in daniel's car while he blasted music and sang the lyrics out loud. then, i let him inside my house even though i told myself i wouldn't when we first got into the car. it was my foolish self who held his hand all the way to my bedroom and lied in bed with him until we let our bodies do the talking and our sounds created music in the silence of the night. i slept knowing he was right beside me, his arms wrapped around my waist, his bare chest slowly rising and falling to the rhythm of his  beating heart. he was safe and i was safe and we were each other's for the night.

"honey, are you decent, can i come in?" dad's knocking the door woke me up with a start. i quickly sat upright and shook daniel awake who just groaned. 

"um yeah, one second." i pushed him off the bed and his eyes shot open, about to complain but i hushed him, ushering him to get under the mattress which he obeyed. "come in!"

dad opened the door and i tried not to look nervous at all. "sorry i wasn't here last night." i didn't reply cause it was usual. "but i made breakfast for you and i wanted to tell you to have a good sunday before i leave to run some errands."

i smiled. that was the first time he'd said something like that. "okay daddy, i love you."

"i love you too baby."

when dad finally left, i let daniel come out of hiding. he clutched his head and i had to get him some tylenol and water before i let him eat breakfast with me. "did something happen last night?" he asked, eagerly digging into the pancakes. "cause you never allow me in your room and i just woke up in your bed."

i shrugged with a sly smile. "oops?" 

"well, whatever it was, i'm sure it was good."

"do you not remember anything?"

daniel shook his head. "nope." good, i thought, breathing out a sigh of relief. i was a major bitch to him last night - understandably. but i hoped it was something of the past that wouldn't ruin anything.

"i wish i could stay with you but i have to go to the studio today," daniel informed me while putting his clothes on. "jinyoung's like... totally diligent and he may be my friend but he's also my manager so." 

i giggled. "yeah, i get it." i handed him a water bottle to drink on the way back and he kissed my lips very gently. "i'll miss you."

"you can see me tonight. there's another party, i can pick you up."

"no, i have homework to do today."

"righttt, you're still in school." daniel chuckled, pulling his shoes on. "sexy schoolgirl." i rolled my eyes and kissed him once again at the doorway. i lowkey didn't want him to leave because i spent most of my weekend with him already and didn't want to be alone again.

"i'll visit you tonight... at your window." 

i was glad he left me with those words because it gave me something to look forward to tonight. i didn't go out at all that day. jojo came over and we did our homework together and we never usually did something like that but i enjoyed it.

when jojo left after eating dinner (which was thai takeout), i felt that loneliness again. no one was home but me so i decided to watch tv and maybe study for my next exam. life is quite boring like this but at least daniel would visit me tonight after the party.

i waited and waited and waited. he didn't show up. i called him a bunch of times but he didn't pick up. obviously he was partying too hard but i just wished he hadn't promised me something if he couldn't pull through. 

i sighed and lied in bed, still waiting. but he didn't come so i ended up falling asleep.

about 3am in the morning, my phone buzzed beside me. i groggily answered it. if the caller had been anyone other than daniel i wouldn't have. "hello?"

"babe?"

"hmm?"

i heard daniel breathe out on the other end. "sorry for leaving you hanging..."

"it's okay," i murmured, too sleepy to say anything else or to guilt trip him. "i guess you drank too much at the party."

there was a pause. "no... i actually didn't go to the party."

after a couple minutes. "baby... are you still awake?"

as The World’s Number One Most Stressed Out Human Being™️ i am definitely in no way fit to give advice on how to relax LMFAO 

but i guess something that always works for me is putting on music i KNOW will make me sing a long or make me happy to distract me from the nerves i’m feeling. also putting on my favorite comfort movies to make me feel better (they’re big fish, scott pilgrim vs the world, and spirited away btw lol)

 What are some things that make you tear up?

the ending of coco, seeing my mom cry, or anyone i love cry tbh, when children are neglected/abused, thinking about the world i’ll have to bring my future children into and how i’m going to be able to teach them to stay strong and bright in the face of it, lyrics that hit too close to home, absolutely anything tbh i cry easy

What is your favorite from each sense?

sight - the view of my cherry blossom tree against a pink sunset in the spring of my childhood home, a person’s eyes and how they light up when they smile, especially when they crinkle as they laugh

smell - the earth after rain, a forest in autumn

taste - my mom’s cooking, good coffee on an early morning

What is one scene from a book that makes you really sad?

unfortunately i haven’t read as many books lately as i did when i was younger...so a lot of my memories are from books that i read like as a kid lol......THAT BEING SAID i think rue and finnick’s death in the hunger games was truly heartbreaking to read, the spine of my copies of both books have cracks on those pages bc i had to read it several times just to really believe it. also i thought it was written so heart wrenchingly well that i had to go back.  also in looking for alaska when pudge, a man who loved to know people’s last words, realized that he would never know alaska’s last words. im also really thankful for that book bc it introduced me to wh auden’s poetry and to this day he’s still one of my favorite poets of all time.

Jaehyun- hands sweaty and heart pounding. Jaehyun knew deep in his heart it was time to tell you about THE bet. Yet the words couldn’t seem to come out of his mouth. He had a frog in his throat every time he tried to confront you about it. Not telling you about this bet was his first biggest mistake. Jaehyun was about to do his second biggest mistake.

You dragged your feet as you entered your apartment. Once you close the door and locked it behind you, you went straight to your bedroom. You almost cried when you saw your bed, it was a beautiful sight to see. You ran to your bed a plopped down on it. 

“Time to put my phone to charge! It has been one heck of a day..” You whispered to yourself.

When you put your phone charger in, your phone lit up and you saw that you had 1 missed call and 5 unread messages from Jaehyun.

“Oh no! Did something happen??? I should call him,,” 

You swiped the notification for the missed call, put your passcode in, and brought the phone to your ear as it dialed Jaehyun’s number.  It went straight to voicemail and that left you confused. 

‘Why didn’t Jaehyun pick up? Is he mad at me? duh hell, I do?’  You thought to yourself because Jaehyun isn’t that person to not pick up when you call.

But there’s a first for everything, you guessed. You then almost immediately went to the texts he had sent. When you opened up your messages, your jaw dropped at the essay he just sent you. 5 paragraphs of him explaining everything and how bad he felt for it. Every word you read felt like a punch in the heart. Tears streaming down your face as you go into an extremely sad stage. You already had such a stressful day and it couldn’t get worse until now. This is the worst ending to your stressful day. All you wanted was a relaxing night but instead, you get a big slap and punch in the heart. 

You wanted to leave him on ‘read’ because you didn’t feel like talking or making contact with him. But then you thought about it.

‘I don’t want him showing up at my door at 2 am with flowers and my favorite love song saying how much he loves me and how bad he feels.’ 

You took your own advice and gave him a quick reply. The text simply said that you needed alone time and for him to let you have that alone time by leaving you ALONE. Once you pressed send you power off your phone and lay back in your bed again. Letting all your emotions go.

Jaehyun hated himself so much right now. Not only did he lie to you the whole relationship but also because he told you in the worst way possible, through text messages.....

He could never forgive himself for doing this to you, never.

Winwin- The guilt was eating him alive. Every time he held your hand, kissed you on the lips/cheeks, or even hugged you he felt unworthy. He knew exactly what he did and how it could affect you and the relationship. He promised himself that he wouldn’t fall in love with you. Yet his heart can never listen and obey to his mind. 

The simplest touch from you to him made his heart skip 100 beats. You made him feel loved and special. It would affect him a lot if he lost you especially if he was the reason why. But all the guilt was building up and it was reaching his breaking point. Knowing he hurt you... Knowing he used you... Knowing he had done everything wrong... He couldn’t keep his feelings bottled up any longer. 

His head told him not to tell you and keep his mouth shut. His heart disagreed and told him to tell the truth to the person he loved most. Winwin had trouble picking a side for a while until he thought with logic and went with his heart. Winwin calls you up and asks for you to meet him outside the dorms because it’s an emergency.

~5-10 minutes later~

“Hey, winwin!!!!” You yelled at him from a distance and running towards him.

Whilst he kept a straight face the whole time. When you finally got to the point where you were standing face to face, you put a hand his cheek. Winwin felt immediate guilt, wanting to back down from this. Fortunately, he didn’t back out of telling you the truth so he took your hand off his face.  

“well then... whats wrong baby you seem a bit mean today...” You questioned almost in a whisper as fear started taking over your body.

“I’m going to start this off first with I’m so sorry for using you. I really do understand what I have done wrong and why you may not want to stay with me. But it’s best you hear it from me oppose to hearing it from another. I used you for a bet and I never had interest in you beforehand. I’m sorry I’ve kept this from you. I just want you to know if you do turn around and walk away from me that I really do love you and that will never change. I was stupid, immature, and I regret it with all my life.  If I could take it all back, believe me, I would take it all back...” Winwin said it all in one shot while looking you straight in your eyes. 

It all was happening a bit too fast. You could only manage to nod while you were processing everything in your head still. After a moment of silence, Winwin got worried if you were ok or not. Before he could touch you, you backed away and finally said something to him.

“ please don’t touch me. I-I-I got t go..” You couldn’t believe what just happened.

 One second your heart was pounding with love the next it was pounding with hurt and madness. You didn’t want to cry in front of him. You didn’t want to show him you are in a vulnerable state. Although he already knew. You collected your emotions and turned around away from him, walking off. Once you were a safe distance away from him you shed a few tears. Nothing was going to be the same ever again all thanks to a stupid little bet that Winwin did.

“As my best friend would like for you to always know the truth especially when I am involved in the truth...” Haechan Told you while taking a seat next to you.

“Wow, what is this? Haechan really cares for me! I am flabbergasted.” You replied sarcastically. 

“I’m being serious dipsh-”

“language! Geez, Haechan you kiss your family with that mouth..”

“nugget! but seriously I have a big secret to tell you.”

“ok, So then tell me!”

“Mak only started dating you because of a stupid bet... The worst part is im the one who made him do it. I’m sorry Y/N. I should’ve been a better best friend to you..” 

“YEAH RIGHT! LOL nice one Haechan I almost believed you for a second there”

“Y/N I swear I'm being serious to you right now!”

“oh... well then Haechan. I thought I was your best friend and you treated me like an object in a stupid bet.”

“Well in my defense, Mark had his part in this too! You know your boyfriend!”

“But so did you, didn’t you?”

“Yes”

“I know you love doing dares and giving them to other people but this is just too far!”

As your eyes started watering up you grabbed all your stuff and walked away from Haechan. But he wasn’t the only one you need to have a talk with. While you were making your way towards SM building your vision became blurry with tears and your head piled with Haechan’s awful words. The thing that hurts most was not only your boyfriend but your best friend too was lying to you the whole time. Then you bumped into someone since you weren’t paying any attention to where you were walking. The person started to curse at you when you made them drop their phone while you head was down. When you lifted your head up and the stranger saw the amount of tears that were on your cheeks and in your eyes they tried to apologize. You just whispered your own apology and ran away.

When you were in the SM building you realized you had no clue where Mark was. Was he even here currently? With his busy schedules, you don’t know where he is anymore half the time unless he is with you or he tells you. Fortunately, he was in the practice room all by himself. Once your eyes lock on him, more tears are forming but you don’t let them come down. You swallow your tears so you can talk to Mark about it. You called out his named and Mark snaps to your direction.

“Babe! Why are you here?” Mark exclaimed while walking towards you for a hug.

which you rejected it.

“I’m an object to you huh?!” You questioned him wanting to get straight to the point.

“W-w-what do you mean??”

“Haechan told me! About how he and you made a bet and I was the center of it. I thought you really liked me when you approached me! The first time some has approached me to go on a date and it turns out to be one big act?!”

“Y/N I'm so so-”

“sorry??? Well, maybe you should’ve told me sooner! Sorry can’t fix anything right now.”

“Y/n please!”

Mark pleaded with tears starting to stream down his face. He reached to grab your waist and pulled you into a hug. You just felt even more hurt know, so you removed his hands from your waist and walked out of there. While Mark just dropped to the floor and started to full on cry.
