Mike Lange got me through a lot of shifts at Wendy's and a good number of drives home from student teaching...to say nothing of the dozens of times I would just be driving at night for other reasons. Visiting family. Driving the siblings around. Running errands.

There was never a better feeling than hearing "HEEEEEEEE SHOOTS AND SCORES!" it didn't matter if the game was tight and the Pens were taking the lead, if the team was up and we were just grinding the skate down further, or if we were getting blown out with two minutes left and we just scored some meaningless goal...he had a different tone for every version, so it was always a wave of emotional synchronization. Didn't matter what was happening in the game, when Lange called it, you knew someone out there was sharing your emotions.

And that was the BASIC.

The one that has always seared itself into my brain, that I can hear at will, is "OH, LORD STANLEY! ETCH THEIR NAMES ON YOUR FABLED CUP!" 2009, Pittsburgh Penguins triumphing over the Detroit Red Wings. That line echoed for WEEKS, and was replayed for years on the Penguins radio station.

He retired years ago, but now...he's Gone Gone.

They failed so bad at communicating and understanding each other but the love was still there. Ugly, messy and painful.

And you can't even blame them.
