kanej author recs | multiple (solo fics) [1/?]
the meadow by inconstant_moon
“Jordie,” he says, slowly so Jordie can hear and understand. “This is a dream.” Jordie tilts his head, laughs boisterously, but there is no sound. Kaz cannot remember his brother’s laugh. He cannot remember his voice. The details are wrong because Kaz does not know enough to correct them. It is the same mistake every night. “No, it’s not,” Jordie corrects. He uses Kaz’s captured pawn to wave to the poppies. “Look at the flowers, Kaz.”

Metal Flowers by KennaM
"He holes up in his room, blocks the window so he can hear if Inej tries to sneak in. He doesn't want her to see, to think he's actually taking this seriously. It turns out the book can’t tell him more than Inej already had. Flowers grew in a person’s lungs, and eventually they grew too large and numerous they choked you to death from the inside out. They only stopped if the feelings were confessed. Absurd. "He rewraps the book and shoves it in a coat pocket to lose later. The concept is ridiculous, implausible, and wouldn’t it be just like Kaz to get flowers mistaken for knives anyway? Beautiful and dangerous but in all the wrong ways. Something new broken inside of him."

With Inej...there was a lot he couldn't control, a fact that he still wasn't comfortable coming to grips with. But he could control the shaking; he could focus on his breathing, and square his shoulders, and even out his footing so his weight wouldn't crush his leg too bad. He could walk to her and talk to her; touch her sleeve, maybe even slide down his fingers to the pulse in her wrist. Seven months she'd been gone. He could - he had to do this.

I'm just having a hard time understanding why people are so adamant that Wesper was 'ruined' in S2 because 'it was slowburn in the books'... because I personally never really saw it as slowburn???
Maybe I'm not looking at it from the right angles but also compared to Kanej it just doesn't hit as slowburn to me.
A ship with tension not getting together immediately is not the same as true painful pining yearning slowburn.
(I will absolutely elaborate if anyone wants me to because I love Wesper with my whole heart and I don't think they were done as bad as people say.)

So... I read the six of crows duology (in 3/4 days) and I have thoughts... about wesper and homophobia
Although I knew that there wouldn't be any of that shit in the Grishaverse... I still kinda checked everytime, braced myself, expected it.
Everytime they were somewhere in public together I expected someone mocking them, I expected the nervousness that Jesper would've had to endure when telling his father about Wylan. That (sometimes) irrational anxiety that comes with coming out even if you're sure you'd be supported.
That one time in the Church when Wylan just hinted that he was with Jesper... I was sure Van Eck would say something nasty. Cause he was Van Eck. He was a bad person, didn't shy away from any opportunity, anything that he could taunt Wylan with; so why didn't he?
Did he send his wife to an asylum and fake her death and separate her from her child and then throw away the said child, try to kill him and after not succeeding, mocking him with his weakness but somehow he drew the line in homophobia?!
And then I understood...it wasn't that people, some people in the Grishaverse wouldn't be homophobic...it was that homophobia simply... didn't occur to them...there was just no such thing
And that struck me. Not the lack of existence of homophobia in a fictional world, no. But my own reaction to it...
I somehow... couldn't wrap my head around it, couldn't understand it, couldn't believe it or connect to it...
I was totally fine with people controlling the Elements or materials with the power of magic. I have always been more than okay with dragons and witches and fairies and all that but this...
This was somehow unfamiliar, unbelievable, out of reach. Like something good that was so far away you would laugh at the possibility of having it. And it's just that homophobia has sit so deep in my head and my world that I can't even accept its absence in fantasy
And I wish it would've been different
I wish we had that in our world
But even now the thought of such a world screams wrong and ridiculous in my head...
I'm not saying they're right to be homophobic. No absolutely not.
Just that no matter how right we are, how natural and how human, they'll always be there.
We're innocents in this cage yet freedom still sounds like a joke

Oh boy, now some things I disliked. Some strongly. Sab s2 was a speed run, yes, and sometimes the plot suffered for it. Mostly, I'm mad about the things that were taken away. Nina was done so dirty. She had the Nina personality and was iconic as usual, but I wish they had used more of her instead of her just...being there and talking about Matthias. She has an amazing personality and a lot of plot armor. Yet, they don't utilize that!
We were robbed of ninej as well. I was so excited for Ninej, and we got like two conversations. I want them to have a strong budding friendship, what happened to her flinching when Nina hugs her? Which could have helped with the lack of Inej trauma addressed this season as well. They were so fucking cute together I needed more. Don't get me started on poor Matthias getting like 10 minutes of screen time. I feel bad for him, but that was a mild complaint because what else is he supposed to do this season y'know?
I was mad at the speed run for Nikolina. They literally put all their iconic lines and scenes that were built up and formed of their relationship developing, and shoved them a into one conversation. They made Alina like him right from the start, and I just feel like in general they needed to flesh out Nikolai like a LOT. He was perfect, emanated Nikolai energy, he just needed more chances to prove that!
The erasure of Jesper's crush on Kaz and the Wesper speed run. Oh boy. Okay buckle up. I thought they didn't build up Wesper well enough, and they made them together for the fan service. I wish they had just made them friends or allies this season. Maybe Wylan was crushing on him a little, but I wanted that banter that they had in Soc. Jesper teasing him was great! This season I wished they had spent a lot more time on Jesper's crush on Kaz. Kit Young and Freddy Carter like to pretend it doesn't exist but it does. And I, (a biased Kazper shipper), really would have loved to see it in its early stages. For Inej and Jesper to bond over it and the utter angst in their scenes because Jes knows he won't like him like he likes her. They seriously cut all of that out, and made Jes say they were brothers which is not true. Kaz sees him as a brother, and it just takes out the whole impact of the Jordie line in CK.
Tolya and Inej better not-*sigh* not getting into that.. David I refuse to believe he is dead. He is a part of the Triumvirate, and he was supposed to get married to Genya before DYING. She cannot catch a freaking break.
I also didn't like how the Spinning Wheel was lame. Like, it was supposed to be in the sky. Buried in the mountains. Instead it's like a small mansion in the ground. The sea whip fetter was kind of lame too. Genya's scars could have been better, and so should the Darkling's Sharpie-drawn scars. One thing I just wish could happen is to show Jesper and Nina being bisexual. Like, at this point, people would think Jes is gay and Nina is straight. Is it too much to ask for them both to show their interest in women?
We didn't get lines like "I am not ruined, I am ruination. " and the iconic "i am become a blade. " I have hopes for s3 though. Flaws and all, I love SAB and I have faith in them to give us a good s3 and Six of Crows.

SHADOW & BONE SEASON 2 THOUGHTS
SPOILERS AHEAD - read at your own risk
Ok, I think I made it clear enough
So, yesterday I finished watching the second season of S&B and I have contrasting thoughts.
Let's start with the good ok?
THE ACTORS. Cannot stress this enough. That is definitely a bunch of very talented people. They had one job and boy if they delivered. I liked everyone but my favourite performances were the ones of Freddy Carter (the Bastard of the Barrel psychotic gaze couldn't have been done better, and also his relationship with Inej... chef's kiss – straight out from the books) Amita Suman (if possible she did an even better job than in the first season, I loved Amita in every scene, from the fight ones to her SCENE with Kaz, and especially what she says to him after that "Hope is dangerous", which I don't think is very much in line with the Inej from the book, but it fits really well in the storyline of the tv series) Daisy Head (THE WOMAN WAS AMAZING, thank god she was given a bigger role in this season! the way she portrayed Genya was brilliant, the hurt, the shame, the fear you could read everything from her face, simply brilliant) Patrick Gibson (my love Nikolai, he also did a very good job and I liked his transitioning from a very swaggering and outgoing performance of Sturmhond, to his portrayal of Nikolai – I've seen some critics in the way he portrayed Nikolai, but in my opinion it couldn't have been better. Sturmhond is not the same as Nikolai otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to create the alter ego; for as much as he has the confident exterior, Nikolai is extremely thoughtful (and I think that you can recognise that by reading KOS/ROW) and Patrick was able to show the thought process that we read in the books, so I liked him). All the others were all extremely good, Ben Barnes off the charts as always, Jessie Mei Li and Archie Renaux did a brilliant job to give us Malina (sometimes definitely too diabetic but alright), the rest of the Crows, Danielle, Kit, Jack and Calahan were AMAZING, they embodied their characters perfectly (Wesper was done beautifully, different than the books, but Kit and Jack are so good that it just came flawless anyway; Helnik was pure angst and I LOVED IT). Also special mentions to Lewis Tan and Anna Leong Brophy because they NAILED the twins performance.
Then we have the plot. Now I wouldn't discard the thing as necessarily bad, because in its own right it wasn't. The issue with book adaptations is that we have such high standards given by the books that we always expect too much. I have to say, some things I liked some things I didn't. Shadow & Bone parts I have to say I'm partial to the second book, especially the whole attack at the Little Palace is just one of my favourites scenes ever and it felt a bit meh. Other issue they have not tackled at all was the religious role Alina had (especially with Tamar and Tolya that in the tv series look more like Nikolai's sidekicks) that instead I wanted to see. A character that basically disappears is the Apparat: I don't like the guy but he was kind of important (how he always schemes around, how he imprisoned Alina, now he's just a guy that gives shady advice to everyone who'd listen). I wish I could have seen more Zoya simply because I love her very much and the fact that she and the Darkling didn't have any type of scenes together is absurd to me. All the scenes where Nikolai was were better in my opinion but I may be a little biased, but I just don't want him to pine over Alina for too long! Not with Zoya right there! But we'll see. Also the whole thing Mal/Alina/Darkling was done in a pretty good way; could have been done better? obviously, but since the objective was not to copy word by word from the books I think it went well. Six of Crows parts I liked how they portrayed Kaz (his childhood story I wanted to cry everytime), very on point BUT I didn't like how rushed it was the vengeance against Pekka Rollins; it was done too quickly for the sake of giving the Crows something to do the first half of the season and it deserved more time for me. I like the new dynamics with the integration of Nina and Wylan, but once again we couldn't really see much of it because there was always someone else and never just the Crows. I've said it before but I'll say it again, Wesper was majestic, Jack must have understood Wylan to a soul level because it was the same as reading Leigh words. I don't particularly mind the fact that Wesper had a thing before rather than not having met at all. Also Jesper embracing its powers was really nice if not a bit rushed. Then, KANEJ SCENES PEOPLE. The talent of Amita and Freddy shone through so brightly it's amazing (the "How will you have me" scene pierced me to the core – not to mention Inej's dream.... ughh so good). KOS foreshadowing They killed David and I was so not okay with that, but then I thought "Did they though?" bc there was no body no anything, so maybe and I say maybe he still alive somewhere (he better be bc he has to marry Genya and be happy and I'll be in denial until it is confirmed). WHEN THE BEE LANDED ON ZOYA SHOULDER the scream that came out of me people thought I was possessed I swear. Nikolai as he finds out he's the nichevo’ya was really well done. What Nina said to Zoya "someone will sweep you off your feet so hard you won't know what hit you" I wanted to cry, I swear if they don't give me Zoyalai next season I'll riot. I didn't particularly enjoy the Genya,Zoya and Alina triumvirate, but I'm feeling it may be short lived. (Also Zoya's "I could fix him" energy is what we want in S3)
Now for what may happen next, I'm really happy about the jurda parem storyline because it affects everyone in different ways. I hope that now that they'll tackle KOS it won't become the Alina show pt 2 but they'll give Zoya the story she deserves. I need Zoya to be the general and right hand of the King and Alina is kind in the middle of that but then I thought that Alina will probably go on her own journey with the fact she has the sword to return to Shu Han and now dark powers and so she may enter her villain era with maybe Mal bringing her again on the right path (also let's not forget that the tree the Darkling goes into is in Shu Han, so I think they'll play around with that a bit), idk honestly all I care at this point is that by the end Alina's hair have to be white. I hope the Crows finally free poor Matthias from Hellgate and finally finally go do the Ice Court heist, that it has been a long time coming.
All in all I honestly liked the season, there was only one main issue that affected everything else: too many characters. In Italian there is a saying "troppa carne al fuoco" which means literally "too much meat on the fire" which translates to the fact that there were too many things to follow to do it properly. Too many stories to follow, too many people on the move with too many things to accomplish, and even with good writing it can easily become a shitty thing. So whatever it is to come (hopefully season 3 and also the rumoured SOC spinoff) I'm glad they are planning to separate the cast.
Ok I'm done.

So I was a very chill Bridgerton watcher to begin with, but now I need season three on a visceral level and so I am very very excited for your regency au.
Gays in eras when you couldn't be gay is one of my favourite tropes (although let's be real that's most of history 😬). I just finished watching Fellow Travellers - which is a great show and you should check it out if you haven't seen it.
Would you give a cheeky summary of where Wylan and Jesper are in society?
oh MOOD I was very low-key about Bridgerton to begin with and then just sorta ended up feral about it 😅 I'm slowly losing track of how many AUs it's inspired but it's also to blame in large part for the progression of my nano project, which is a fun early 1800s romp!! Other than Bridgerton i've not actually seen fellow travellers but I've seen a lot about it and really want to watch it because it seems right up my alley - so, soon, maybe! 👀
For regency wesper au I made it more of a "make Ketterdam have regency vibes" kind of fic rather than a "transplanting the crows into regency England" because I'm not so interested in writing period typical homophobia or any historical accuracy, and all of this is to say that this au is a LOT of pure vibes 😅
Anyway I have ended up just drafting what might end up being the fic summary for the au, hopefully it gives you a good flavour of whats to come 👀
This is not the summer Jesper Fahey plans to marry. As the son of a modest baron, his plans for the season consist mostly of promenading alongside his friends and trying not to lose too much money on a bad bet. But he doesn't expect to start the summer by crossing paths with the young Marquis Van Eck.
One bad dance at the summer's first soiree is all it takes to launch Jesper on the season of a lifetime; one full of long days, gossip rags and marriage-minded marquises. With all the time he's forced to spend by Wylan's side, it will be a wonder if they get through it without biting each other's heads off - or falling into some other bad idea.
(So the tldr is: Jesper is a baron after little more than a jaunt and a good day; Wylan is a marquis looking for a good and sensible marriage; they both end up spending far too much time together and shenanigans predictably ensue 👀)
#i did also write kaz as the author of a snarky bitchy gossip rag which is the one concession to actual bridgerton i made lmao#asks#uthers bald head#long post

Fic #2 in the Marriage Material series is finished! You can find both fics on my ao3 and linked below! This concludes the main arc of the series, but I'm planning a few oneshots from other POVs and expanding the world.
Silver Shackles rated M, 39k words
In Ketterdam, marriages are just another contract, albeit a bit more permanent. They were a good way to make alliances, even between people who wouldn’t ordinarily be seen together. Which is how Wylan Van Eck ends up being married off to Jesper Fahey, in order to solidify the connections between Kaz Brekker’s Dregs and Jan Van Eck’s mercher empire. The only problem? Wylan had no say in any of this, and he enters this marriage contract expecting the worst. But Jesper isn’t as ruthless as his father warned, and even Dirtyhands might have emotions. Or, Wesper arranged marriage AU with bad parent Jan Van Eck
Paper Rings rated M, 26k words
Three months ago, Wylan married Jesper Fahey, a man he had never met before and who he was certain was going to kill him. Instead, marrying Jesper had turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to him. Wylan is happy living with Jesper, honestly. But part of him doesn’t want to just stay home, playing housewife and building bombs for Kaz Brekker and his gang forever. So when Kaz offers him the chance to take down his father, who treated him like shit and sold him into marriage, how could he say no? Kaz always has a plan and Wylan has an appetite for revenge. He just hopes it won’t all blow up in his face. Or; the sequel to Silver Shackles, wherein Wylan and Kaz (but mostly Kaz) conspire to take down Van Eck, and it all goes sideways very quickly.

I also never received my goods. Please I want to read this so bad 😭 I'll take a nap for it 🙌
Here's the answer, Lore (literally, the full synopsis of my work, start to finish). Now go to sleep
I'm adding a keep reading because there is going to be a lot
Okay, so first of all, it's set in the show universe and this is for a very good reason, I promise you. In Shadow and Bone s2, Wylan is introduced. This is important because they speed up wesper's arc (which a lot of people are mad about but I don't honestly mind, I feel like it was still in character and I love the way they did it and, hey, they were the only happy couple in s2 so-). Anyway, the important thing is that at the end of s2, the Crows don't know Wylan's a Van Eck. Apart from Kaz, he does hint at it
So, basically, my fic idea (Bow Before Your King is the title, I'm quite proud of it) is set in the show universe. At the start of the fic, we have like one chapter of everything being alright for wesper. Kaz says they've got a new job. (Matthias is still in jail, btw, this is pre-Ice Court) They've got all the Crows apart from Matthias. Kaz's job is pretty big money and also surprisingly easy. There's a new exhibition coming to the Ketterdam Museum of Culture about an ancient Zemeni king - from long before the monarchy in Novyi Zem was abolished. Supposedly, a lot of the exhibit is solid gold. All they need to do is rob it.
Inej doesn't like it. Neither does Jesper. They've still got to go but Inej doesn't believe in stealing sacred artifacts, she thinks no good will come of it. And Jesper grew up in Novyi Zem, he learnt all about the legend and urban myths of curses and ghosts these kings protected their treasure with. Either way, they've got to do the job tonight.
Jesper nips round to Wylan's workshop for some distraction, where Wylan is packing for the job. Jesper notices some post on his table. Wanting to be helpful, he scoops it up and flicks through it. Most of its bills but one letter catches his attention. It's thick and good-quality and written on expensive paper. It's sealed with a wax crest with a laurel crown on it. A Mercher's writing to his boyfriend, but why?
Jesper asks Wylan about it. Wylan gets terrified and begs him not to open it, tells him it's just junk. Jesper calls absolute bullshit and opens it anyone. Out loud, he reads
Wylan, My son, if you can read this, know that I miss you and am begging you to come home. Please, if you can read this, come back to where you belong. Your father, Jan Van Eck
Jesper explodes at Wylan (which is honestly, quite understandable). He feels betrayed and lied to and they have this massive fight, Wylan defending himself and Jesper saying he thought he could trust Wylan to listen to his truth and tell the truth. (at this point in the series, we know Jesper's a Durast and about his mum and everything). I've got a brilliant little piece of dialogue which is just *chef's kiss*
Wylan: I learnt very quickly you had to lie to survive in the Barrel
Jesper: This isn't survival, Wy. This is us
^^^ This is how they go to the job. Keep that in mind while you read the rest of this
They go to the job, pissed off and not talking to each other. Inej notices and sidles up to Jesper, checking he's okay. In whispers (cos they're in a museum at night), Jesper explains the whole thing to her. He asks if anyone knew Wylan was a merchling. Inej says that she knew
J: What?!
I: Kaz knew too. And where do you think he gets his information from?
J: So does everyone know about my boyfriend's past but me?
It doesn't exactly make Jesper feel better (especially considering he was going to tell Wylan he loved him-). In this state of mind, he's feeling pretty reckless
They split off into groups when they reach the exhibition to find what they're looking for, which is a solid gold altar. Inej and Nina go off on their own while Kaz, Jesper and Wylan explore another side of the room.
Jesper finds the altar. Wylan tells him to be careful. Jesper scoffs and, true to book form, snarks at him and calls him 'merchling'. He leans his hand on the altar and tells Wylan that "nothing's going to happen."
Jesper gets possessed. By the soul of an ancient, young Zemeni king called Rhamani III, who was killed on the very altar Jesper leaned against. Once they all get over the language barrier (which involves a very annoyed Nina and Wylan slapping Rhamani, at Nina's insistence), they realise what a massive problem this is.
Not only does Rhamani have a Zemeni accent, he acts nothing like Jesper. He doesn't stand like him, he doesn't talk like him, he doesn't have the same opinions. He doesn't even know how to fire a gun. The only thing Jesper and Rhamani have in common is flirting with poor Wylan (who is, at this point in time, still in a relationship with Jesper that he's very committed to, despite them having fought)
Kaz insists Rhamani needs to stay out of the Barrel while they sort this out and instructs Wylan that he'll have to share his workshop (which is on Rozenstraat, a little way away from the Barrel) with Rhamani. Rhamani is delighted, Wylan is not.
While Kaz, Nina and Inej try and find a way to un-possess Jesper, Rhamani spends all of his time flirting with Wylan and distracting him from his work. Oh, and trying to convince him to break up with Jesper because, apparently, "Jesper lacks security as a lover. Security I can provide." He also thinks Jesper's powers are a curse, which he states. Multiple times. Yay... Jesper can still hear everything that's going on, by the way.
(so he also hears when Wylan turns Rhamani down and admits to him that he loves Jesper, for everything and despite everything)
Kaz brings a load of old Zemeni books to Wylan's workshop for Rhamani to work on. Rhamani, after Wylan asked him, said he wanted to help find how to 'free Jesper'. He starts reading one of the books and finds something. Wylan notices it in his face (he's very bad at hiding his emotions) and asks him about it. Rhamani accuses him and says he could just read it for himself. Rhamani is a king, not a commoner who reads to people. Wylan admits that, no, he couldn't just read it himself and if Rhamani has access to all of Jesper's memories (which he does) why didn't he know that already?
Rhamani makes up some excuse and Wylan accuses him of lying. They have a row and Wylan leaves. He heads to the Crow Club, where he finds Kaz, bleeding
In Kaz's words, he "walked into a fight I couldn't walk out of". Wylan gets him to admit that he needs Jesper just as much as the rest of them.
Wylan goes back to his workshop. Rhamani doesn't apologise but he doesn't mention the reading thing again. He tries to make a physical come-on to Wylan and Wylan very possibly breaks his nose. He runs again.
When he gets back to his workshop with Inej as backup, he finds the place is trashed. Chemicals and glass are strewn about the floor and the vapour makes him gag. Rhamani's passed out inside and Wylan saves him, much to Rhamani's surprise. They go to the Crow Club and lock Rhamani in Jesper's room. Wylan cleans up his workshop and tries not to cry about it.
Back at the Crow Club, the crows are trying a variety of techniques to get Rhamani to tell them how to lift the curse and free Jesper. He won't talk. When Wylan gets there, he appeals to the side of himself that Rhamani's always shown. He kneels beside Rhamani's chair and implores him, as a subject would, to return their friend to them. Rhamani concedes and tells them. The other crows are incredibly surprised at Wylan being able to do that. He just admits that A) he's grown up around men like that and B) you just need to know what side to appeal to to seem helpless
They go back to the exhibit and Jesper gets un-possessed (idk how yet but shhhhhh). Jesper and Inej have a little reunion but Wylan hangs back with Kaz. He wants to run to Jesper and hug him and cry that he's alright but he doesn't. He's scared to.
(also, in a deleted scene for the show, Jesper asks Wylan to move in with him so, that's what this next scene is about)
That night, when Jesper's in his room, there's a knock at the door. It's Wylan, bringing him some tea and coming to collect his stuff. When Jesper asks why, Wylan admits he didn't think Jesper would want him after what happened. They talk about the fight and it's all very cute and very soft and they make up. The end!
Now, you've got what you wanted. Please go to sleep

Okay so I know everyone's worried about the alleged bad season 2 reviews and concerned that it'll be horrible but honestly? Watching the trailer? I'm so excited. I loved siege and storm (mainly for Nikolai haha) and although we can already tell that there are massive changes, I'm excited to see what they are. And the sets and CGI and production of the whole thing looked so cool you can tell so much effort was put into the show, and we have a fantastic cast who I trust to put their heart and soul into their roles- so yeah! I'm excited. In one month we get a high quality well acted author endorsed crossover fanfiction between all my favorite characters- and I can't fudging wait. I already read siege and storm multiple times- heck yea give me a new storyline and new interactions I will eat that stuff up.
Also the show has Wesper so it could literally be the worst steaming garbage ever but give me .4 seconds of ✨sexual tension✨ and gay pining between Jesper and wylan and I will endorse this show til my dying day. I just love my boys so much
Anyhow this was a ridiculously long post to say I am excited for the show and you can be too!
#No but if it flops I will legitimately cry#Like for a full week#Jesper Fahey#Wylan Van Eck#nikolai lanstov#Alina Starkov#Speaking of Alina Jessie mei li looked so good in the trailer#Whoever chose that first army coat thingy deserves my love and affection#The swagger and pure energy Jessie brought into the trailer was astounding#Maybe this should've just been a Jessie mei li appreciation post because WOW#Jessie Mei Li#Honestly everyone was so hot in the trailer#Just a bunch of pretty pretty people#Especially kit#Shadow and bone#Shadow and bone Netflix#Grishaverse

Six of Crows Thoughts
So I finally read Six of Crows and it was a ride. It was probably the first actual physical fictional book I've read in a decade.
I watched the Shadow and Bone show first and knew plot beats and general spoilers/important quotes from the books. And I'm not gonna lie, knowing what was going to happen, but not how it happened made reading the book so much more fun.
Thoughts below.
First of all, holy shit, the crows are so mean to Wylan in the beginning! Even Nina and Inej. That poor boy!
Like, knowing Wylan can't read and that his father tried to have him murdered for it made the rest of the crows' speculation about him running away so petty and unnecessarily mean. But it's not their fault because they don't know. Really glad the book shared the details of what's written in Van Eck's letters to Wylan. The message is so cruel, Wylan's better off know knowing what's in it them. If I hadn't been aware of the spoiler, I wouldn't have even registered all of the little hints Bardugo left. Like the unread letters. Wylan not labeling the map he made and pushing the pen toward Mattias to let him write the ice court names in Fjerdian when Kaz demands to know why it's not labeled. And asking what the book says when they pass it to him before he realizes it's a spyglass. As someone with the mathematical equivalent of dyslexia (math version called dyscalculia), Wylan and his learning disability representation is so important to me.
It was so exciting to hit the big plot beats. There's Inej getting stabbed and Kaz going feral to rip a man's eye out! *fangirls* Waiting for the goddamn tank to appear. Inej's shoes melting as she climbs the incinerator shaft. Nina taking parem.
Every. Wesper. Moment. God, I squealed so hard at the "Just girls?" "No, not just girls," line and had to read the scene out loud to my husband. (Thank you for indulging me, Love.) Their slow burn build up was so satisfying. I get to enjoy their speedrun show version and slowburn book version -- it's the best of both worlds! The shocking part was that the not-just-girls conversation took place while Wylan's hands were bloody from trying to hack away at the chain link. Like, Wylan may be new to crime, but like he goes all in and gives 100% the entire time. Ouch.
Despite knowing so much of the story before reading it, all of the things I didn't know were equally entertaining. Like, I knew Wylan sings a Fjerdian drinking song, but learning the context when and why was so satisfying. (Fuck netflix for not letting Jack Wolfe show off his voice in this scene. Fuck netflix in general.) I also have a new appreciation for Nina and Mattias and their very complicated ... everything. I probably knew the least about them coming into the book and walked away really liking both of them as characters far more than I expected.
Breaking someone out of jail: barely an inconvenience.
Boarding a ship: The most dangerous task of the entire book. lol.
The most unexpected moment in the books was the Crows stumbling across the burning bodies on the pyres. This is a YA novel. I had to remind myself that this gruesome scene straight out of a horror story Is. In. A. YA. Novel. Then Bardugo says, you think that's bad, and makes the entire scene so much darker! Goddamn. One of the bodies is still barely alive, suffering, and Jesper puts it out of it's misery like it's a horse with a broken leg. All Kaz can do is snap at Jesper for giving away their location with a gunshot. Jesus christ.
Speaking of ... Kaz is waaaaaaaaaay more violent in the books. Holy shit. The show neutered him. Little Kaz swearing at Jakob Hertzoon. Him climbing out of the harbor at 9 years old and robbing a kid in front of a candy store, taking the boys pants just to humiliate him. Cutting another kid's feet up just so that he can steal the boy's job. Brutal. Every time I came across those scenes, I summarized them for my husband (who is a saint for watching the Crows scenes of the show with me and listening to me talk about this series non-stop) because my hubby thought Kaz came off as the most useless member of of Crows because for someone said to be so violent, Kaz Brekker never actually did very many violent things. Hubby pointed out the Inej, Jesper, and even Wylan have a higher body count in the show than Kaz.) SO I felt obligated to prove just how insane and deranged Kaz was in the book.
Nina is a queen for taking parem and saving all of them. What a sacrifice.
I'm so proud of Inej for stealing Heleen's diamonds. Take back your autonomy!
I also really appreciated the irony of the entire Ice Court being Grisha made. Like, my druskelle dudes, you hate Grisha but you depend so heavily on them. You can't have it both ways.
Jesper's horror of the kefta lined tophy wall and his internal struggle after killing the tidemaker gave him so much more depth. He denies his powers pretty hard, but he acknowledges that it could have been him captured, strung out on drugs, or murdered. Part of him died after killing the tidemaker that was actively attacking him and Wylan ... it's so heavy. He knows that he should have volunteered to take the parem with Nina or in her place, but was too scared to do it. I love Jesper so much.
I knew there was going to be a body switch, but didn't realize it happened in Six of Crows. I thought it would just be in Crooked Kingdom. Van Eck's betrayal was ... woof. Sad that Kaz and Wylan's conversation about being a useless hostage/Wylan's disability/and the body swap plan was summarized in Kaz's narration and not shown. I have a mighty need to read that entire scene, dialog and all! Give. It. To. Me!
Kaz probably threatened the shit out of Wylan to not tell Jesper about the body swap onboard the ship. (That's book Kaz's usual style of persuasion.) But Wylan as Kuwei standing near Jesper on deck each evening is the most romantic, sweet gesture I've read in years. God, the pining. And it's just treated as a throw-away line! Excuse me, I'mma need some fanfic about this. Meanwhile, Jesper's like, why is this new weirdo following me? lol.
Jesper thought Wylan (and others) were on the ship as it blew up. And Kaz wanted him to think that. Goddamn. The book just straight up says that Kaz let Jesper think Wylan had died to punish him. Again, Kaz is insane. This cannot be understated. He really earned that title of Dirtyhands.
Random, but I also really enjoyed all of the names, whether characters or locations. The naming was a point and easy to pronounce, (aside from Kuwei, which I double checked the pronunciation but that's probably just me being overly cautious.) Fantasy names can be kinda tricky, either sounding too modern or using obscure letters to be an incomprehensible mess of x, q, and z. So well done with minor phonetic changes and lots of double letters.
I'm so excited to read Crooked Kingdom now.

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how the Kuwie kiss would go now that Jesper and wylan are already in a relationship (and oh yeah, LIVE TOGETHER). I want to see the hilarious hatred Wylan has for Kuwie on screen
oh my god anon do I have THOUGHTS about this.
obviously these are my own thoughts on what I think/want to happen (as an angst fueled individual as well) and is also just a fic concept I'll never write and tbh if I had the ability to write a whole fic about this I so would.
this is ending up being a whole mess of thoughts of the lead up and all that and I'm almost sorry about it but I want to talk about this so bad.
Okay, one thing about this scene that I don’t see mentioned a lot is that Jesper is not doing well in the lead up to it. He’s just fought with Kaz—when Kaz calls him Jordie no less—and then immediately fought with his father about the farm and him being Grisha and all Jesper has been keeping from him. When he finds Kuwei at the piano he isn’t exactly processing literally anything. And that is why he mistakes him for Wylan, not because he can’t tell them apart. Yes, Kuwei does realize this and keeps up the act to deceive him, but initially, Kuwei is sitting at the piano. Jesper is in distress. He’s looking for Wylan, and he thinks he’s found him. And what does Jesper do in emotion heavy moments? He jokes, he flirts, so he flirts with Wylan. When Kuwei responds differently than Wylan to these advances he’s actually confused for a second, he even says ‘really?’, but again he isn’t exactly thinking clearly and decides to go for it. As soon as the real Wylan interrupts, as soon as his mind is clear again he instantly sees even their minute differences down to the narrowness of their faces. ‘I was paying attention’ comes to mind, because when he is he can tell them apart instantly.
My point is it’s a specific set of circumstances that lead up to this moment, and I think they can all continue to exist in show canon. I think the argument with Colm could potentially be even worse, considering Jesper has been away for longer and has been actively using and practicing his Grisha powers. I also think this is partially why they cut the deleted wesper scene, because it in a sense displays Jesper at least beginning to give up gambling, and I don’t think they can get rid of that storyline just yet because of the things it causes in SoC when they’ve closed out some of the other storylines that are also catalysts in that plot. Am I happy with that is another conversation….
Anyways I bring all of this up to say that while the circumstances have every possibility of staying the same the Jesper going into the room and the Wylan discovering them are very different. And their relationship as a whole is very different. There’s no confirmation them living together will be carried from the deleted scene so I’m gonna leave that out, but they’ve been together for at least a significant amount of time. And they’ve just gone through this whole patch of uncertainty.
I think that after the Van Eck reveal there will be a bit of a split between them like we saw this season. I don't think they'll break up but it'll get a bit rocky through the journey to Fjerda and the beginnings of the ice court heist. and with Wylan's trauma/his father in general being their client I don't think he would really fault Jesper for being upset? Especially with the 'I don't want to hide anymore' scene between them this season. This would all naturally come to head towards the middle/end of the heist after they climb the incinerator shaft and are working to trigger the alarm. Specifically when Wylan pretends to be a drunk to save Jesper and then the Grisha attacks them and Jesper has to kill her to save Wylan. This scene with Jesper already coming to accept and develop his powers will be SO interesting to see, because even in the books when he has only just been revealed as Grisha to the crows he is remorseful and upset to kill one of his kind (another Fabrikator at that) even though he knows he had no choice in that moment. Exploring that in a universe where he is 1) older, and more importantly 2) accepting or at least beginning to accept his powers and his place in the world as a Grisha is something I really hope they explore. It’d even be cool to see it mirror the scene in season 1 when Inej kills Pavel to save Kaz. This would lead to a kind of ‘we’ll talk when we aren’t actively looking death in the face’ situation.
Except now Wylan is faced with Kaz thinking he’s actual leverage against Van Eck, and I don’t think his decision to let Nina tailor him would change in this new canon. In fact it would probably make him even more willing, because he is that much more attached to the Crows and to Jesper. He’d probably fight against lying to Jesper but conceded to Kaz in the end because Kaz. I think too that there is more room for a heartfelt scene outside of ‘maybe I liked your stupid face’ and that’s possibly why they used it this season. Because now that they're together it would make more sense for Jesper to express genuine emotions about Wylan being tailored—into someone who is actively wanted by multiple nations no less—and lying to him about it. Of course, Kaz asked him too and I think that would also be such an interesting conversation between Kaz and Jesper but I’ve already gone so off track.
Wylan will also probably be either more or less jealous of Kuwei because he and Jesper are already together, though I think more considering his self esteem issues. I would expect only in body language/action alone unless Jesper or someone explicitly asks him because again, it’s Wylan. I do legally require them to include the ‘how about I push you in the canal and we see if you know how to swim line’ because it is so iconic and they already took just girls from us.
I’m going way to in depth with this.
Anyways.
I wonder too what direction they will go with Wylan being tailored in the sense that he doesn’t just look like anyone, he looks like Kuwei. In the original scene Jesper says he misses Wylan’s actual features but would take any version of Wylan, but in this new canon does that stay the same when he ‘had’ un-tailored Wylan? And how would Wylan feel being with Jesper as ‘Kuwei’ knowing Kuwei has a crush on him and makes advances on him later on? I think it’s a very interesting topic and I really look forward to seeing if they delve into that at all. Personally I think they’d agree on waiting for Wylan to have his features back so that’s what I’m going with.
So considering all that, and the circumstances surrounding the scene, with the idea that his argument with Colm could also be worse, this scene gets very interesting.
Obviously now he is going to be actively seeking Wylan out, I feel like I don’t need to explain why. When he finds Kuwei he’s probably incredibly relieved, and I think he would actually confide in ‘Wylan’ about his argument with Colm. In the book, he just kind of paces the room and flirts with him, but him and Wylan are together. They already went through all of season 2, and now all of the Ice Court situation. And Kuwei not responding would probably confuse him a bit, but much like the first scene he really isn’t in his right mind. And being upset, I think he’d default back emotional avoidance and this is where we’d see that flirting from the original scene, maybe less of a ‘wanna get out of here’ and more of a ‘let’s blow off some steam’ in this situation considering. And he would know, the second Kuwei kisses him, that this isn’t Wylan. Even in the book he knows something is off, but now he already knows exactly how this kiss should go. The thing is we don’t know how long Wylan was standing there. I think Jesper would be so upset at himself for not realising and at Kuwei for tricking him, but if Wylan still sees? There’d be no doubt who is standing in the doorway, and I think the scene after this will really be so different. Maybe they’ll still have the sitting room scene before they can talk, or maybe Jesper will actually rush after him in this version. And so much changes in that conversation, because he can’t just ‘kiss whoever he wants’ in this canon. The entire rest of his POV really, Wylan being tailored back and their original first kiss would be very different. And those scenes are just, 80 million more thoughts.
What’s interesting about this too is it moves Kuwei from just having a crush on Jesper and shooting his shot (through deceiving him but still, they’re teenagers in the books) to being a bit of a villain. Not in a big SoC villain sense obviously, but knowing Jesper and Wylan are together and still deceiving Jesper and letting him talk about his dad thinking it’s a conversation with his boyfriend is a lot different than the circumstances in the books, especially aged up. I do actually like Kuwei, I think his character was interesting and would be cool to explore away from the SoC plot where he served a specific purpose (disclaimer I haven't read KoS), and I know I’m not the only one so that will be a very interesting deviation to take that really separates him from book canon and how he’s perceived by fans. But I need to shut tf up now because this is way longer than I think anyone wanted. Though feel free to ask me more questions that I can elaborate forever on.
#did i just write almost 2k of analysis.#literally no one asked for this#anon didn't even ask for this#but i wanted to talk about it so bad i've thought about this scene since i read the books and now w the new dynamics to think of i just ugh#i need to TALK about it#shadow and bone#shadow and bone 2#grishaverse#wesper#wylan van eck#jesper fahey#six of crows#ask answers

i wanna teach you how forever feels with 221 (wesper)
time can't stop me quite like you did with 205 (i wrote this for a school assignment, it's from the book they both die at the end)
i strongly dislike this list mainly because of solangelo being on there and how long ago i wrote those fics because theyre really bad now 😭 perhaps leave more kudos on my wesper fics :)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
YES it makes me so happy that people enjoyed what i wrote. i'd like to say it's author fuel but i have not touched any of my fics since august but they ARE author serotonin
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
it's either time can't stop me quite like you did (because he literally d!es) but none of my SoC fics have angsty endings, because none of them have endings. haha
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
uhh i'd say it would be i wanna teach you how forever feels purely because it's a cute domestic post-ck wesper
8. Do you get hate on fics?
i dont think im widespread enough to have haters on my fics tbh 😭
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
nope, i am literally 16 !! although i have written a few very intimate passages but theres also taught you the way you call me baby which is the closest i'll ever get for now
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
my wesper romeo and juliet au like fire and powder that i havent touched since august! this was like my most big brain idea ever but i'm torn between discarding it and starting from scratch or continuing as it is right now

15. What’s a WIP you’d like to finish but doubt you ever will?
THE ROMEO AND JULIET AU I AM CRYING i need to continue it as soon as possible oh lord
16. What are your writing strengths?
not sure tbh! i do find writing dialogue easy but it also leads to my downfall sometimes which i'll explain in the next question
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
inner monologues, because they jump around too much and i eventually stray from the original thought. or anything thats not closely tied to a character ... i'm really strong with character driver things but if you hand me a plot, i'm gonna struggle (which may be why the r&j au is failing LMAO) and how i said with dialogue, it ends up being dry and makes the scene move a little too fast. i'm really bad at slowing down scenes 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
never done it before hehe
19. First fandom you wrote for?
percy jackson, i think
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
my romeo and juliet au because its the most ambitious thing i ever tried to accomplish. i really want to get back to it because i'm still so intrigued by the idea of it and i was shocked i wrote 10k for the first chapter but it felt like it was being squeezed out of me... i'll do my best to get back to writing i've had insane weiters block (no thanks to school 🙄)
thanks for tagging me rae :) i'm tagging @artsypretzel @jazzythursday and anyone else who sees this and wants to do it :)

Me then: I don't understand why people get so angry with bad adaptations. The original source material still exists so what's the problem?
Me now: WHAT do you MEAN Wesper has already slept together??? Why is Kaz saying these things to Inej already????? HOW IS HELEEN DEAD AND INEJ HAS NO REACTION TO IT???? WHAT IS THIS PLOT WITH PEKKA AND THE DREGS AND- IM CHEWIMG GLASS
...needless to say, I understand people better now 🫠
It's about the DISRESPECT 👏👏👏👏
mountevey asked: I'm only two episodes into S&B season 2 and goodness everything you and everyone has been saying is already so correct. I think one of the biggest crimes for me personally is that it's just soooo boring. None of the scenes have any intensity for me, no drama, the fight scenes are so slow?? The awful flashbacks are not impactful at all?? Almost none of the of the characters are emotionally drawing me in or making me care all that much?? Idk man it just feels so shallow and I'm bummed about it
IT IS SO BORING AND BADLY WRITTEN..... Genuinely Riverdale looks better
Anonymous asked: at this point, they should seriously make the six of crows spinoff completely accurate and disregard the crows’ adventures in ravka if they wish to maintain leigh’s main themes of “justice for the nobodies” and “be gay, do crime” 😪 following the show canon, you can’t call them scrappy young “nobodies and nothings” anymore if they basically helped in a huge war in a different country against a literal grisha general.. Preferably they really should make it animated with two seasons (and we get all current actors to voice act, but especially danielle galligan bc i giggle like a fool every time she speaks 🤭 i’m no better than the guards she charms in the show tbh)
Haha Dani you are sooooo funny and special *twirls hairand kicks feet in the air* It would be really funny if they pulled an Ao no Exorcist s2 and pretended none of the original writing in SaB happened. Sadly, since the writing room wouldn't change, it would still suck ass
#eernask#eernanon#mountevey#eernask talk grishaverse#you can tell emotions left me bc these have been sitting in my inbox for days but thanks to that article they are back full force#sab my beloathed i want to see you cancelled
