Both of the Jedi gave her their attention as they continued to eat, but it was Qui-Gon who urged her on as he responded in a calm tone of voice, “Please, tell us what you know. We are limited in our intelligence as I’ve tried to keep our travel plans here quiet. I didn’t dare risk transmitting requests for information in case the other clans were watching our activity on Shogun.”

“The planet is small, much smaller than Mandalore itself,” Satine began, her demeanor belonging more to a duchess than a young woman as she addressed them like a room of advisors, “and nearly two years ago, the population of Ordo Minor suffered a great deal of violence at the hands of the Traditional Mandalorians. They staged an invasion that flew under the radar of even the planet’s own officials, and in a matter of hours, all of their ports and entryways were sieged.”

Obi-Wan had been devouring his food quickly, and as he reached the bottom of the bowl, he quietly set his utensil down and looked at her with a sober expression as she spoke.

Qui-Gon’s consumption slowed as he listened intently, and when she paused for a moment, he could feel her sorrow in the Force.

“The major cities were razed first and the citizens believed that once the cities were destroyed, the Trads would move on to bigger targets on other neighboring planets. Most of Ordo Minor were farmers and hunters who believed in the traditions of our people, including being skilled with weapons, so they did not evacuate or take caution,” Satine continued.

Across from her, the padawan leaned his arms onto the table and stared at her as he asked, “Did they believe they could fight them off?”

She shook her head. “Worse,” came her reply. “They didn’t believe there was a threat. Most of the population felt that because they honored the ways of the old, there was no reason for the Traditional Mandalorians to come for them.”

Colt squeezes his eyes shut once he’s finished reading the letter, fighting the urge to crumple the piece of paper into a ball. How could you have been so stupid? his inner monologue chides him. How could you not have recognized unconditional love when it was staring you in the face?

The memory of your touch hits him like a knockout punch. Suddenly, every moment the two of you have shared comes back to him in excruciating detail. Smudging paint on each other’s faces. Walking you back to your hotel room. Flirting with you at the club. The look in your eyes when you ran to him after the train stunt. Your hands on his face, in his hair.

Setting his jaw, Colt glances at his watch. 7:42 AM. If he can figure out where you’re leaving from, he can catch you in time. There are a lot of things he needs to say before it’s too late, and now, for the first time, he’s ready to say them.

He folds the paper, tucks it into his pocket, and starts running.

He can’t lead them there, they’ll break the door down and drag him out, witnesses be damned. He starts to back up instead as Lola elbows her brother in the ribs. She says something that Nathaniel can’t quite make out. 

Because suddenly the ocean is calling his name. And he turns to race towards her.
