One of the earliest examples of Leo’s “I’ll do my own thing to accomplish our goal without discussing it with my team first” is in episode one. It’s super, super quick, and ultimately inconsequential, but it subtly sets up a great precedent that I think is very interesting.

When the boys need to grab the medallion from Splinter without Splinter noticing, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie huddle together with Raph taking the lead in trying to devise a plan to get the mystic device. Meanwhile, Leo slinks away and grabs the device by clocking the situation (by knowing his father well enough to predict his actions - something he does with each family member multiple times in the series) and making a move on his own.

It works out perfectly fine, and is ultimately the best move, and it’s honestly okay that he didn’t consult everyone for something so small when it’s such a non issue to get it, but it nicely sets up how this tends to go in the series, including how it goes in the movie.

To be honest episode one is actually really good at setting up a lot of things for each character in the long run, this is just one example that caught my attention, as small and unassuming as it is.

Nervously dipping my toes into some of the sotr casting discourse for a second (mostly just about Louella/Lou Lou)

I completely understand why people are mad about some/a lot of casting choices, I’m disappointed and surprised by a few, but a lot of people are using arguments that really don’t hold up and it’s annoying me😭

Thinking for a SECOND that the casting directors would go against film continuity is quite silly if you ask me. There was no chance they would cast Haymitch as anything other than white. I don’t know much about who are the casting directors and who’s involved in the casting process but I can imagine there are at least a few new guys since the original film, so take issue with the old casting crew and original film, the current film isn’t the issue here, it’s just trying to stay consistent with past choices.

Similarly, continuity is a big part of Louella/Lou Lou’s casting. She needed to look like Katniss (aka Jennifer Lawrence) to drive the Sweetheart thing home to the audience. Personally I did picture her as black, so I was surprised, but it’s the only thing that would make sense to do, especially since they need to make sure it’s visibly obvious to the viewer that she’s similar to Katniss, because they can’t have Haymitch’s inner monologue pointing stuff out the entire time.

Another reason people are pissed about with the Lou Lou casting is because they think that District 11 is only poc, which isn’t actually true. (Clarifying that I am talking about movies and movie continuity because I can’t remember what it says or implies in the books)

This is a picture of the people in District 11, and yes most of them are poc, but I think there’s a lot more white people than everyone seems to remember, and enough for it to not be too weird for Lou Lou to be white.

I’m not trying to say I like the casting choices, I have always pictured Louella as black, it makes more sense imo, I’ve seen so many posts over the months about the importance of her being black, and it was very jarring when I saw the casting, but it’s also a very understandable choice when you think about it.

You have the right to be upset, and everyone has the right to complain should they want to, but I do encourage that we have our facts straight when we try to talk about this stuff.

I don’t quite know how my brain got here right now - but I’m thinking thoughts about the way the show has been paralleling Buck and Eddie with each other - as well as with the canon couples on the show - but in a very specific and interesting way - because when you take Abby and Tommy as a collective - they are a parallel of Shannon.

All three are firsts and not lasts for Eddie and Buck.

Abby and Tommy have been intentionally connected on the show (yes making use of a fluke name commonality but that’s what makes it especially clever and interesting) on several levels as being basically two sides of the same coin - Abby was his first serious relationship and Tommy his first queer relationship - they are both Bucks firsts and not his lasts. In the same way that Shannon was Eddie’s first and not his last - the show chose to have buck point out that Shannon was the first girl Eddie slept with - implying she wasn’t his first girlfriend (something that was confirmed in the cut Eddie/Chris conversation about the lake.

If you think of Shannon as two entities instead of one person - Texas Shannon and LA Shannon - it becomes easier to spot the parallels.

Texas Shannon is paralleled with Abby - both leave their respective homes and don’t come back - both Buck and Eddie expected them to return when they had done taking some time for themselves - finding themselves.

While LA Shannon is paralleled with Tommy - LA Shannon asks for a divorce after Eddie wants to have the second child he thinks is coming and to get remarried etc - to go all in with her and their relationship. He is making a decision based on flawed thinking and external expectations after a conversation with a ‘elder’ (supposedly wiser figure - Bobby).

Which is very much a parallel to Tommy dumping Buck after Buck decides to go all in and ask Tommy to move in and starts talking about marriage - after the hurdle of discovering Tommys past with Abby and having talked to an elder (in this case Josh who is a queer elder).

Both narratives are connected to commiting to something due to societal expectations - for Shannon it was becoming pregnant outside of marriage in a Catholic dominant society and therefore ending up married to Eddie.

While for Tommy it was having to mask himself as a straight man because he was in the army and firefighting - both environments that were toxicly masculine and heteronormative at the time Tommy was in them and so he ended up in a relationship with Abby - which then sets up the circumstances for Abby to feel the need to run to find herself.

Both Texas Shannon and Abby then feel the need to run - to find themselves because of the environment they find themselves in and this sets up LA Shannon and Tommy as second firsts for Eddie and Buck. And both LA Shannon and Tommy have grown and evolved since Texas Shannon and Abby and both can see that their respective relationships are not meant to last - that they’re not the right fit - that they are forced and they have the personal development to choose end them before they cause more hurt and damage.

It’s a great play on being firsts and second chances but not lasts and it ultimately shows the suitability of buddie - they make the same mistakes in a different way - both having their first independent of each other but having their second chance/ second first whilst within each others orbits - and because they are ultimately looking for the same thing it is all serving to spin them closer to each other to a point where they can understand what their lasts look like - and that it’s each other

some people in this fandom are going to be really disappointed when winds of winter comes out.

you guys. you cannot treat the POV characters as stepping stones for other characters/other POV characters.

the POV characters must have a fitting end according to their character arcs, themes, foreshadowing, etc.

to clarify, the POV characters chapters are about THEM. their storylines are about THEIR journey. you cannot use their hundreds of pages of character development as a brick to build the castle your fav will live in.

this is especially true for the key 5 and for the other younger POV characters. their endings have everything to do with them, they do not revolve around your fav.

us readers out-of-universe reasons for wanting x or y characters deaths does not matter. what actually matters is if you can support your theories with textual evidence from the chapters of the POV character that you want dead.

I had closed my shop in anticipation of the Canada post strike but they seem to be shipping still, so I’ve re-opened it lmao

while sorting through my shop supplies I’ve gathered all of the left over fabric patches from last summer and have listed them for what is about 40-50% off I believe? There’s small ones for 8$cad and large ones for 16$cad ^^ I would just like to clear some stuff out. I’ve also discounted the two chokers up i have up for the last time, after this I will likely remove them from the shop and keep for my personal wardrobe lmao. But yeah lots of discounts!
