Until Dawn Movie Announcement Thoughts

Moving over here because somehow Tumblr of all places is where I can more candidly put forth my Until Dawn movie reservations. Reddit is a bit touchy now.

Okay, am I happy this means there will be a resurgence in interest for the game? Absolutely. Totally. Stoked and on the hype machine.

But… a movie adaptation of what is already almost a movie except interactive? What do we gain in that? Like here are some immediate things that are hitting me:

1) It could just be boring because we’ve seen this… cinematically… before

2) You mess with the sensitivity that is making things more “canon” than other things because the source is choice based.

3) If everyone lives, that’s kinda an odd horror film (though at this point, I’m preferring this option). If anyone dies, fans will be inevitably pissed because you’re actively picking favorites, and it shows.

4) This isn’t old enough to get a new cast. Most people seem very attached to the old one (I super am). Like idk… it doesn’t feel right to recast this? I don’t like it. Especially for Josh like… does anyone think Rami Malek can be replaced in this role??? The problem is he was too perfect.

5) I’ve just been bitten so many times with new material in my fandoms reversing the effect of the old or weakening the original meaning/intention and I hate it and trust nothing new years later anymore.

6) Is this in place of a remaster or sequel because now I’m wondering if we could have had a remaster and now I’m bitter.

Like I’m going to stay semi-sane and optimistic because yay Until Dawn hype! I just want people to talk about it! And who knows, maybe the movie will just be og cast Until Dawn with extra focus on the astounding bond of friendship Josh, Chris, and Sam share and end with redemption for Wendigo Josh, rendering it literally the perfect movie! There could be gold here. But red flags. Red flags everywhere.

what happens if lubelle tries to explain steve?

steve isn’t prone to violence unless you’re going to mess with his family, but let’s say they meet under innocent circumstances. what if he tries to explain to her what he knows? what if he tries to show her the beauty of the inexplicable, the beauty of night vale? she can’t see it, won’t see it- so what then?

so she does try to explain steve, explain his intricacies, explain why he can see and understand what no one else does- what then? does he cease to understand? does she understand more?

what is the reality of the lines and arrows in the sky- are they really there? does steve actually see and know what he says he does? or is he simply seeing things that don’t exist like everyone else has told him his whole life?

if, in the worst case scenario, whatever she explains becomes true and steve suddenly is just hallucinating, or a conspiracy theorist, or however she explains away what he says- what changes for him? if lubelle tells him the same thing everyone has been telling him for years, does it do anything? his own wife brushes him off when he tries to share with her, his step daughter is uninterested, he’s been blasted on public radio by his brother in law.

maybe it’s naive of me, but i think steve would be okay.

would night vale survive, though? would huntokar? the messages in the sky, the truths that are mapped out, would those cease to exist? cease to be true? i think that’s more concerning than whatever lubelle could try to do to steve. he might be a bit hurt, but what would it mean for what he actually did understand?

and what if she is unable to explain steve? what if he is able to stand his ground because of his experience with being dismissed, with being told he is crazy? it wouldn’t be new for him, people trying to explain to him why what he sees isn’t real. maybe she moves on to threatening his family, to threatening janice, or cecil and carlos. maybe then he stands his ground, fights back. maybe he pushes with aggressive compassion and helps her understand, helps her see that night vale is what it is because of all that can’t be explained. maybe they both explode! idk but i just. i think steve is in such a unique position here no matter what she does, a unique position no one else can come close to. it’s kinda fun!!!

I am feeling extremely disheartened about Chrysalis today as I try to work on it.

Idk. It’s a combination of having serious writer’s/artist’s block lately and the fact that I chose to live with the OC curse aka “no engagement” lol. This is in no way meant to guilt trip anyone; I know I need to do a better job of commenting on other fics and actually interacting with the community, replying to the comments I do get etc. That’s on me. I’m very touched by the folks who have kept up with me and been patient with me. And yes, something something “you should predominantly create for yourself” but it’s only human to want people to enjoy your work, yeah? The “keep writing out of spite” well hasn’t totally run dry yet but ugh. UGH! The cycle of fic despair/mania repeats again and again.

so i finished the bastard son & the devil himself only to find out it had been cancelled the day before, and i still have two episodes left of the imperfects (it’s taking longer because i’m watching weekly with a friend) but i already know it’s been cancelled, and now on top of that i just saw that they’ve cancelled warrior nun too. netflix really just gave us a show with a slow-burn wlw relationship between main characters and a show with an ace main character and a show with a poly relationship between main characters and then just cancelled them all.
