First time I ship an unnamed character but some people on twitter are jumping onto it too so!! Flock to me brethren. Hienbeni is my bread and butter you guys know this but it’s all about Beni to me franky, Hien is a foil in that for me. But Hien really shines in this dynamic imo… Hien’s all about getting stuff done so then, putting her with an obstacle, a challenge and a potential ally all at once… Someone who matches her intensity and might…….

Pitting professional confident rule-bound Hien against a fiery canary criminal would be interesting and ohh I am looking. Professional assassin who grew up with rigid training in a noble household, has never died ‘til a week ago and doesn’t have so much as a scar on her x slums girl who’s toughened it up and has the marks to prove it. She’s lived through some shit and most importantly she’s survived. Someone who overcomes and doesn’t let a thing keep her down for long. No nonsense squad leader who can take a laugh but is here for a job x prisoner here for a job against her will who likes to have a laugh but ready to throw down.

Also they have a matchy thing going on with how one has a scar going over her left eye and the other has dot tattoos under her right eye…

We don’t see Scar in flashbacks to Utaya or Mithrun’s rescue and Kui is big on continuity in background characters, but she was around by the time Rin was taken in a decade ago at the least. Erique is her warden. She has tattoos that do seem to have a magical purpose, but we don’t know what her magic is. [Edit: -hangs my head down- ok so looking closer it does seem like the "scar" is another tattoo… It’s ok I can work with this, not editing the rest of this tho. Even more matchy bc they are tattooed forever, marked by their line of work!!] I like to think she’s relatively new to the canaries because of this. The canaries are said to be understaffed and Misyl for example was recruited despite not having committed major crimes. Indeed Misyl’s "fraudl spread knowledge of ancient magic" is nothing next to Scar’s crimes, but it’s always possible crimes of the prisoners are exaggerated is what I’m saying. Arrest on false charges or overstate the crimes to justify sending to the canaries etc etc. Stuff that could be played with. I do think the murder adds something to hienbeni tho. It’s left ambiguous what the ninja girls’ past jobs have been but Hien is specialized in explosives and is trained to infiltrate places stealthily and fight, so! "Who was your first kill, why did you do it and was it worth it" girls night playing 20 questions.

Hien laughs about Scar’s crouched battle stance and promises to teach her a thing or two in sparring but then Scar sweeps the legs and whoops yuri wrestling

We all know the semi-canonical ‘all the Robins know to hide/duck inside of Batman’s cape, even as adults’ thing.

We also know that Danny ‘is LITERALLY a ghost’ Fenton sucks at remembering his own intangibility while ALSO forgetting to look ahead of him.

All I’m saying is, Danny Fenton (or Phantom, if you’d really like) would absolutely SLAM into Batman on accident while running on roof tops and Bruce ‘Brooding Instinct’ Wayne doesn’t even think twice about letting the kid hide and scanning around for danger before there’s a record scratch of ‘wait who tf is this?’ kicks in.

I think they should let Talia have a recurring boytoy, somebody mature and unassuming but cultured like a professor or an art director or something. He serves no narrative purpose other than to give Talia a taste of the life she could have if she wasn’t burdened by her connection to the league, and to make Bruce jealous even though they’re not together anymore. I feel like something that should have been explored more in Arcane is that despite the dangers and pretty much horrific conditions, Zaun children seemingly grow up a lot more caring and have a larger understanding of family in comparison to Piltover children. And if such a reflection of the real world in a sense.

The kids of Zaun seemingly grow up with a lot more adult support. Ekko is easily welcomed under Benzo’s wings. Vander adopts 4 kids (two of which we learn he knew of before their parents death, two of which we can’t be sure of). Silco, despite all what happened, and his ulterior motives, shows no problem adopting Powder/Jinx. In the alternate universe it seems as though he’s still played a part in the kids lives. Jinx adopts Isha easily and Sevika cares for her as well. Hell, even Mr. War Crimes Against Humanity does well with little Viktor (until ya know, the animal abuse).

Hell, up until Vander dies (the first time) there seems to be a large understanding of if there’s an orphan or a kid in need of guidance, take them in! (And certainly don’t inform them of your plans to turn a giant pink salamander into drugs and be confused when a nine year old doesn’t understand). If a kid wants to be your apprentice, let them! For the most part, until things all went wrong in the end of act 1 of season 1, the worst parts of Zaun seem pretty typical for any city in poverty.

Match that with what we see with how Caitlyn and Jayce grow up. Caitlyn is given adult support, yes, and it’s clearly a good adult mentor, but it’s not entirely by her choice. It’s been chosen for her. She’s safe, but there’s a lack of freedom of choice. Meanwhile, when Jayce gets older, and that same accident in Act 1 happens, the family that supported him and his mom turns their backs. His own mom doesn’t support him either, because she’s afraid of what he’s talking about, but also because he’s damming them to being outcasts.

Conversely, Vander is more than willing to take the fall for what Claggor, Milo, Vi and Powder did. He’s willing to go to prison for a long time, in order for them to have a better future. Despite Vi’s best efforts, he’s not going to listen to her (she is just a kid) and he’s not letting his family go down and get hurt.

Meanwhile, a man who grew up in this mentality, where there’s a wide sense of family support from people who aren’t your biological family, is the one to go to Jayce, a stranger, and tells him he believes in him. It’s why it’s such a shock to Jayce; his own family and family friends denied him. They didn’t support him.

I think that’s what makes all the difference. Piltover and Zaun have wildly different understandings of family and forgiveness. For Piltover, it shuns and damns the lives of those who upset the balance. For Zaun, it provides safety and never ending understanding.

I just saw someone say that Tim was the only member of the batfamily who didn’t suck at math.

With the exception of Dick (acrobatics) and Cass (body language) none of the Batkids are THAT much better than the others at a certain skill

Yes Jason is a better shot

Yes Tim is a better detective

And on a technical level they’re much better

Sure

But that means that if they have a 0.001% chance of cracking a case or making a shot. There will be a noticeable difference between Tim being the character or say Damian.

Think of each skill like a normally distributed curve okay with the mean being your average hero/olympian/hacker/genius

The Batkids will be at the 96th percentile in the skill

With the exception of 1 of them being at the 99th percentile range

Unless you are writing something you can comfortably say is complex/difficult enough to warrant drawing attention to the 3% difference. It’s annoying to bring it up

Because Dicks introduction is the fact he can do something the rest of the kids can’t to the point where it’s an identifier within his own story. It’s how Tim found him, a signature only he can do.

And Cass because she is genuinely cartoonishly cracked in her own storyline and in batfamily stuff she’s borderline a mind reader

These are exceptions because yeah

If you told me Jason, Dick or Steph cracked a difficult case in a run I wouldn’t treat it as shocking information

If you told me Tim, Dick or Damian managed a tricky shot with a firearm in a dire situation (like what happens in the Grayson run) it would be interesting, surprising but like not? Shocking?

If you told me that Jason did a quadruple summersault off a building and landed on his feet I’d be confused as shit

And even WITH Dick and Cass the other kids are still FREAKISHLY good at D&Cs special skills but they both have unignorable signatures

This is a very long winded way of saying when an author simplifies a character down to

“Oh look nice flippy one”

“Smart one”

“Angry gun one”

“Pet collector”

It’s annoying because you basically ignore all the interesting overlap

Like guess what Dick literally has a habit of collecting strays (see the rabbit and 3 legged dog he lives with in his apartment in the new run)

Tim is fucking badass and is very good at dealing with explosives

Damian is canonically currently thinking of leaving the family business and no longer being a hero to maybe focus on helping people in other ways

Jason occasionally works with magic and demon bullshit

And every single one of them is a genius okay literally every single one of them could get a masters in physics, chem, bio and history in like 2 weeks flat.

Their stats are stacked

All of them know enough info to be able to do 99% of a task and yeah someone might call Tim or Dick in for detective help or Jason for muscle and restraining backup but in 99% of cases THE OTHER CHARACTERS SHOULD BE EQUALLY competent
