Me: Huh…maybe I should start doing some riordanverse headcanons, like character x reader headcanons or something. I haven’t done that before.
Me:
Me: …Wait a second. *Checks my works on AO3.* WTF DO YOU MEAN I HAVEN’T WRITTEN X READER STUFF FOR THIS FANDOM??? AT ALL???
That’s crazy. I need to fix that.

Thalia Grace x Korean fem! Reader
requested by: @kakashiandjuvia
request: “Can you do Thalia grace x female Korean reader named Eun-ji girlfriend headcanons? Like one where they make out in a tree during capture the flag, and Percy and the others look for them. Other scenarios could include teaching Thalia about Korean culture, and just generally being cute.” YESSS, I adore Korean culture! It’ll be so dam fun to write.
Genre: mostly fluff with some smut
warnings: Thalia is alive in this, wlw, oral (reader receiving), brief mention of the gods, being caught, pjo timeline, reader being the daughter of Nyx, use of y/n and pet names
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Before relationship head cannons:
Before she started to date Eun-ji y/n, she was questioning her sexuality… like she was obviously not attracted to guys (due to being a huntress) and was questioning rather she was a lesbian or ace
She heard of you from the campers (probably Hermes or Aphrodite) that a daughter of Nyx was at camp
You two immediately became friends because of your parents being “high and mighty”
you two joke a lot about being just like your parents (her being scared of you)
You two would jokingly call each other “babe” and smack each other’s ass when you’re close enough
She started to catch feelings for you when you were the first one who comforted her when Luke betrayed camp
Relationship head cannons:
Definitely a “tired tall badass x feral short gremlin” type of dynamic
She’ll let you wear her clothes when you’re in her or your cabin
I don’t really see her as an affectionate person in public but behind closed doors, she will always be held (arm around your waist, hugging/cuddling)
She’ll love dancing with you at night and with 70 - 80’s love songs
You spend your free time teaching her about the Korean culture (the food/holidays etc)
She’ll speak about someone she doesn’t like in Korean to you (example: “저 여자 엉덩이는 팬케이크보다 더 납작해 보여” which caused people to look at you when you laugh)
Smut head cannons:
She’s 100% a switch but leaning towards dominant
She loves being eaten out by you and loves teasing you
You nearly been caught a few times…
She has a strap-on with a black cord that wraps around her hips if she wants to doggy style
You guys make out during capture the flag against a tree
She’ll tease you in Korean and watch you become weak at the knees
Little scenarios:
You were pinned up against a tree, Thalia’s hand gripping your wrist as she ate you out. You were struggling not to moan, you were overstimulated by your 6th release “울지마 자기야, 내가 가장 좋아하는 여자는 관심이 필요해” she coo’d quietly as her tongue flicked your sensitive nub, you could hear the others calling for you and her since the game was over.
“Hey baby?” Thalia looked up from your chest as you two were cuddling in your cabin “yes 아기?” You replied with a head tilt “can you teach me about Korea? Like it’s culture and stuff?” She hummed, you were surprised a bit at her wanting to learn about Korean culture “s-sure” you stammered out ~few hours later~ Annabeth walked into your cabin “hey Eun-ji we-“ she pause, seeing you and Thalia asleep in snuggled into each other’s chest “I’ll just go…” Annabeth walked out
translations:
“울지마 자기야, 내가 가장 좋아하는 여자는 관심이 필요해” - Don't cry baby, my favorite girl needs attention
“저 여자 엉덩이는 팬케이크보다 더 납작해 보여” - That girl's ass looks flatter than a pancake
“아기” - baby
i’ve been rereading through the pjo/hoo series and i just got to the lost hero, and i genuinely can’t understand how some people were prepared to drop the book just because percy wasn’t in it
like sure, you can feel like jason’s more boring than percy, but on the first read aren’t you at least curious about what’s going on? why’s he using the roman names for gods? why does he seem like he’s already an experienced demigod? who the fuck is he??
i feel like in terms of introducing a new character/pov, rick made jason very interesting from the start, so i’m so?? confused why people wanted to drop the book?
also tho i just finished reading the second piper chapter and honestly i can understand the initial hate of her (even tho i love piper)
her first two chapters are a combination of exposition that people who read pjo already know and her dramatically thinking about the dreams she had, rick really dropped the ball introducing her :/
overall tho going from tlo to tlh back to back really shows how different the writing styles of the two series are, which is kind of interesting to me considering rick probably wrote them one after the other
(and i’ll admit the writing so far in tlh is worse than the pjo books so maybe that’s why people wanted to drop it? but then why hate on jason for that?)
#pjo#heroes of olympus#tlh#jason grace#piper mclean#i read hoo before pjo so i’ve always had a soft spot for hoo and the lost trio#but dam going pjo to hoo back to back is an interesting experience
was thinking about that valgrace drabble i wrote for valgrace week because i miss them and its time to start speculating on that au.
so the image i kind of had for that drabble, like about the arena, was basically daedalus’ labyrinth in mind. because of the constant dead ends and the monsters around the corner, the fighting ring where ethan nakamura was introduced, etc. except it wouldn’t be underground nor would the walls be made out of whatever material the labyrinth was (i forgot).
but rather a maze made out of sand. so there’d be scorpions, they’d have to constantly move because the maze shifts and the walls would dissolve and open up new paths. along with pools of lava, of course. and not to kill off our tributes so quickly with exhaustion, heatstrokes and lack of water, there’s obviously little bits of water here and there. basically they’re fighting for their lives out in a desert and just, you know, have to gamble on whether or not the ponds or cacti they find aren’t poisonous.
at least that’s how it is for valgrace’s arena.
for percy’s arena, its centered around water because duh, i can’t ever let go references or symbolism. reyna’s arena would be similar to the roman colosseums. just to name a couple. i don’t think annabeth would’ve been reaped but i do think she is a stylist alongside pollux (castor died in his arena).
for the rest of the seven and co (i have a mutual’s tags in mind as i write this, love u to the moon and back for ranting away), thalia would indeed be a victor and nico would indeed have been taken in by the grace siblings after bianca’s death.
that goes without saying, reyna would have been frank’s mentor. grover, i think, would have been a mentor as well. i just have no idea who would he have mentored because i’m not assigning districts at the moment. (not yet at least aside from the grace siblings and our children of war from new rome)
anyway
so the arenas. definitely inspired from ancient greek and rome along with the books. like the labyrinth for example. bianca’s arena most likely would’ve been related to the underworld. so getting through the fields of punishment yada yada. since we’re being practical, another arena would be similar to tartarus so completely underground with no sun, just nothing but the rivers and caves and whatnot in sight (this would be lee’s arena and if so, he probably dies to save micheal. if its micheal’s arena then he would die to save will). then there’s places like olympus with the columns and since in mythology, its in the sky, the floors would probably be chipped away as in, some of the tributes might either die from the rubble OR you know, sink holes. joyful, isn’t it? atlantis, an actual death match battlefield probably, volcanoes, the ice palace with khione (i don’t remember what exactly it was or which book that’s from bare with me), the wolf house (that would be fun), the forest from camp half-blood with killer vultures.
ummmm i feel like i’m missing a few but you basically get the idea.
a lot to pick and who actually on who’s arena it could be, who would’ve won, etc etc. that also goes without saying, luke castellan is still a traitor unfortunately. so is silena. isn’t it fun that there’s twelve districts with twelve cabins (at least when we aren’t counting the rest but even then there’s about 24 cabins in total i think. i haven’t been caught up with pjo in a while my bad guys) so all the half siblings are still together and still have to watch each other die? oh the angst, its fantastic. (i’m no better than a game master i fear)
i like to think the children of war—ares/mars, athena, aphrodite/venus, bellona, etc—are most likely victors whether its on their own or they come from a long line of victors. so reyna and hylla, frank and his mother, annabeth, the aphrodite and ares kids, etc etc.
this came out way longer than i thought BUT its very fun to think about. i don’t know if i’ll ever turn this into a fic, i have my hands full as is but as always, i’ll let you know anyway
I’m abt to post a new clarisse FIC but I just wanted to go on a rant abt this
SPOILERS FOR PJO
Clarisse and silena Were in love. Ive already made a post abt thhis before but I wanna just like elaborate
- “Clarisse is in love with Chris and silena is in love with Charles beckendorf”
Yes that’s true but have you ever noticed how differently clarisse treats female characters vrs male characters. She softer and while still a bitch not an actually shitty person to characters like for example annabeth, silena and more, in the sea of monsters she was concerned for annabeth after she broke her ribs but in the next line insulted Percy.
She is also seen countless times being kinder to annabeth in multiple different scenes while still be harsh to other male characters. She gets ruthless in the war meeting in the final book and all she said is “I apologize to only silena” or something like that. When have we ever seen clarisse apologize than to silena
- “clarisse went into the labyrinth to find Chris she loved him”
Clarisse went into the labyrinth to find Chris, the only reason for this was because he showed up to her house in Arizona. She felt responsible to get him back from camp. She also helped nurse him back to sanity until Dionysius could help.
Clarisse felt responsible for Chris, that’s why and she can still love him platonically. That’s how I’ve always viewed their relationship was them being platonic.
- “silena and clarisse Were Just good friends that’s it”
Clarisse and silena Are direct parallels to Achilles and Patroclus, two characters in the Iliad who are very clearly lovers.
I Said it once I’ll say it again, Rick most likely didn’t think about making both girls the parallels to the myth until he was already writing the book. If he had decided on that way before I firmly believe he would of made them both together
But I would also like to add his books came out in the early 2000’s the last Olympian coming out in 2009 and queer represantion wasn’t as “common” as it is now. With Disney also being his publisher he was probably hesitant to even introduce a gay character in his books let alone two sapphic women.
Yes we started to see change for queer identies in the early 2000’s we also have to still think that again Disney is ricks publisher, even Disney didn’t really start being more accepting of LGBTQ+ identies until recently.
- “well if all that’s true why didn’t Rick just make them in love in the final book”
I Just explained why above but also he had already written their relationships out, silena and beckendorf in the demigod diaries or which ever one it was and clarisse and Chris in the battle of the labyrinth.
He can’t just go back and completely rewrite the cannon relationships he has set without it being weird.
——
In the end even actors like Dior who plays clarisse says that her character and silena will have a more sapphic relationship and with the show coming out now and with season 2 being announced, Rick having cannon gay characters a whole book about nico and will who are to young men in a relationship going through Tartarus, I belive Rick will make silena and clarisse have a more romantic relationship compared to the books.
Also we’re going to be seeing a lot of change anyways, Rick wrote these books YEARS ago and of course like any artist you will critique your old work. So again I hope we see a more developed and romantic relationship between silena and clarisse especially since Clarisse is very much a lesbian coded character
That’s it Ty for coming to my Ted talk 👩❤️💋👩👩❤️💋👩
What I hope to see in PJO TV Episode 6
I’m guessing the episode is gonna cover the chapters “We Take a Zebra to Vegas” and “We Shop for Water Beds". So I made a list of things that are in the book/story beats and could be included. Hoping for more book accuracy this time tbh.
The animal transport
-The zebra, the albino lion and the antelope. I saw an ostrich I think in the trailer so maybe that’s an addition but I don’t know why they would change the original animals
-The animals having the wrong food and the trio changing that, taking care of them, giving them water, cutting off the balloon etc
-Grover getting angry about that and maybe even trying to leave to start a fight with the drivers. Did they mention he’s a vegetarian yet?
-Grover talking to the animals (I’m still hoping for goat noises)
-Since the spiders were cut out of the waterpark scene maybe it will come up some other way? Since Percy uses it to help Annabeth snap out of the Lotus Casino trance. + the Athena/Arachne story
-”We’re a team, remember?” (even though I wished they would have shown that teamwork of the trio in the waterpark)
-Annabeth and Percy sharing an Oreo
-I guess they will not talk about Thalia and Grover because Percy already knows and they cut out the Iris message scene where Luke mentions it. So I wonder if they will talk about something else. Maybe more Annabeth backstory/her family. Maybe Annabeth and Percy uplifting Grover.
-Since they cut the Poseidon/Athena rivalry discussion I guess there will be no ‘I don’t know what my mom will do. I just know I’ll fight next to you.” “Why?” “Because you’re my friend, Seaweed Brain. Any more stupid questions?” Maybe there will be a similar scene
-Percy dreaming about Thalia and Luke and Kronos and his mother in front of Hades’ throne
-The drivers taunting the animals and Grover getting mad about it
-Annabeth tricking them into fighting by knocking on the wall
-The zebra talking to Percy (and him figuring out that it’s because Poseidon created horses)
-Grover blessing the animals + the “Why can’t you place a blessing like that on us?” “It only works on wild animals.” “So it would only affect Percy.”
-Percy freeing the animals
The Lotus Casino
-Epic games and water slides and bungee jumping and stuff like that
-Percy throwing Ares’ backpack in the trash and it later returning to him
-The kids enjoying the room, getting new clothes etc
-Percy teasing Annabeth for watching National Geographic
-Grover playing the reverse hunter game
-Annabeth playing trivia games and a city builder sim
-People that look like they are from all kinds of different time periods
-Groovy Darrin
-Percy getting suspicious and asking everyone what year it is
-Percy realizing and being scared that he forgot his mom’s name for a second
-Percy helping Annabeth snap out of it (not with spiders probably, so with something else?)
-Sudden weather change when they leave, stormy, checking the date to realize there is only one day left
-Apparently they go there on purpose because Hermes is there? I’m just hoping that they will for once actually fall for a trap and not just avoid everything because Annabeth is *~too smart~*.
The Santa Monica Beach + The Waterbed Palace
-Annabeth has the idea to use the casino cards for a cab
-The cab driver calls Annabeth “Your Highness” after seeing the infinite money
-Percy tells the trio about his dream and they start to realize something’s wrong because they were talking about two items, but they settle for “It has to be Hades” for now
-”You have evil thoughts for a goat.” “Why, thank you.”
-Percy walking into the sea in Santa Monica and letting a shark take him further to the edge of a huge chasm (could look super cool)
-The nereid riding on a sea horse
-Percy having flashbacks to seeing faces in the sea when he was a kid because she said they were watching him
-The nereid telling Percy to not judge his father and that they are not allowed to show favoritism
-She giving him the three pearls and explaining how they work
-”You have gifts you have only begun to know. The oracles have foretold a great and terrible future for you, should you survive to manhood.”
-”What belongs to the sea will always return to the sea.”
-In the Mississippi she said “don’t trust the gifts” so maybe she will say it now? Referencing Luke’s shoes and hinting again at his betrayal.
-Annabeth “No gift comes without a price.”
-Someone on the street recognizing Percy from TV
-I guess they already showed Gabe so they won’t see him on the News again? Though I think the young woman sitting next to him would make him more despicable because he replaced Sally immediately
-A gang of kids surrounding the trio and Percy scaring them off with Riptide
-While running from them going into Crusty’s waterbed palace
-God I hope they don’t cut it
-Crusty looking kinda reptilian
-Grover and Annabeth getting trapped on the waterbeds getting streched to be 6 feet tall
-Percy remembering the story of Procrustes and tricking him into laying down on a bed and killing him
-The trio finding the address to DOA records
Nerds au??? What is that??
SHDFDSF OMG ive been waiting to talk abt this for so long. bc i started it in, like, february, and got like a little over halfway through it and then i stopped writing it because of other things but i still really really wanna finish it so basically here's the premise:
i call it the nerds au in my head bc they're all nerds, this au has like the entire main cast (which is like nico, will, jason, leo, percy, annabeth, reyna, and pretty much all of the other main hoo/pjo characters) as like. the kids in 5 ap classes and straight a's and in the scholars program (which idk if this is a common thing, but it's a thing at my school, where it's a group of students who get good grades in like really rigorous classes (ap/honors courses, which if you're not from america, is just really hard college-level classes with more heavy workloads than regular classes) and these group of students get to go on a trip once a year to somewhere (like, to visit colleges, or to just go somewhere interesting/educational)
and basically this would *probably* be more effectively named, like, "field trip au" bc it's essentially that. it's really just me writing these characters into my life for that two day trip that i went on in february with the other scholars kids and had such a great time, and i got it in my head to think "oh, what would the pjo kids be doing in this scenario?" yk, ignoring that most of them are wanted by the government, have been kicked out of many schools, and would certainly not be top of their class. but like. yk. minor details. it's an au!
and so, in this au nico and will have a sort of academic rivals relationships?? there are lots of fun tropes including, there was only one bed (actually there are three beds but jason and leo are sharing a bed and these idiots can't figure out how to work the pullout couch), academic rivalry, and lots of general shenanigans. it's very much just a fluffy, feel-good type of fic, that has a bit more of a focus on the dynamic of the friend group overall than just the solangelo relationship
but yeah, the nerds au is essentially my mini-memoir of this field trip, but through fictional characters! like, literally. i pulled several bits of dialogue from the real life conversations i had. pretty much all the plot points were all things that happened (except for the romantic subplot, bc, yk, me being aroace so that's just added bc it's solangelo and how could i not)
anyway. here's the first few paragraphs of it (aka kinda like a mini prologue but it's only 800-ish words so) :)
From: Gleeson Hedge <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 1, 2024 4:32:00 PM To: Nico di Angelo <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Scholars Trip Meeting
Nico,
No worries. Hope you feel better soon. Your friends have signed you up for the rooms — You’ll be sharing with Jason Grace, Will Solace, and Leo Valdez. Make sure to stop by my classroom to get the forms when you get back.
Mr. Hedge
Sent from my iPhone
Nico reads the email. Then re-reads it. He shuts off his phone and opens his outlook on his computer to read the email again.
You’ll be sharing with Jason Grace, Will Solace, and Leo Valdez.
As if Nico isn’t already miserable from the cold he’s come down with over the past week. He had thought fine, it’s fine, it’s just a sore throat, and I’ll get out of school for a day — but then one day turned into two, and then it turned into being bed-ridden over his entire three-day weekend, and then missing another two days of school, including two exams, an absurd amount of classwork, an in-class timed essay, two physics labs, and the stupid fucking Scholars trip meeting.
He hadn’t thought it would be a problem. He’d pick up the forms another day, and then he’d just get the information from Jason or Reyna and it would all be fine. He had thought it would be pairs. He had thought he would be sharing with Jason.
It had been a very detailed conversation: Jason turning around in the middle of AP Lang from his front row seat, yelling back, “Hey Nico, you’re in Scholars, right?”
“Yes,” Nico had responded, voice quiet as it always was, but it might have been a bit louder because he had been wearing headphones and he never does get his volume quite right.
“Wanna be roommates?”
“Okay.”
Very enthusiastic. He had thought that was the end of the conversation. So he hadn’t been worried about missing the stupid meeting, but now it turns out that he’ll be sharing a room with not only Leo Valdez, but also Will Solace—
He may just die. He’d have Hazel write it on his gravestone: Nico di Angelo, died of gay panic. Blames Jason Grace and whoever gave him a cold, causing him to be sick on his literal birthday, and on the day of the Scholars Trip Meeting. At least he got to live to see the age of seventeen.
That’s a bit too long of a message for his gravestone, but he’s sure Hazel will find a way to get the point across.
By the time his eyes scan over the email one last time and realize that yes, this is real, he shoots off a polite response saying thanks and when can he make up the essay he missed. Then, he picks up his phone and sends a much less polite text message to Jason.
It’s only much later as Nico is re-watching Frozen for the third time and staring sadly at the growing pile of tissues on his bed, when he gets a message that says: It was either that or leaving you with Octavian. Sorry, dude.
Three bubbles show up on the screen. Nico waits a few seconds, then:
It was actually Will who offered it, anyway.
;)))
That’s it. Jason’s going to be the one who needs a gravestone, not Nico, and he’ll ensure that he won’t get caught—all he needs is the perfect opportunity, and they’ll be going to the beach, won’t they? He’ll drown Jason, make sure there’s no chance—
His rage somehow transforms into a coughing fit, and it only takes a few minutes for Hazel to poke her head into the room, a grimace on her face. “Oatmeal?”
Nico doesn’t have the energy to say no. He’ll make it up to his sister at some point, when he’s not on his death bed.
It’s unfortunate that Hazel, one year younger than him, won’t be going on the trip. It means that Nico will only have two sort-of friends, Reyna and Jason, one of which he will be giving the silent treatment because of betrayal.
He wonders if he can just get out of the trip all together. It’s not like it’s required; he could just go to school like normal—
“Oh, Nico, by the way,” Hazel leans her head back into the room, no oatmeal in hand, “Frank wanted me to tell you that he’s got your forms for the Scholars Trip, and he’ll give it to me tomorrow. Did you want me to stop by your teachers to get them signed?”
Shit. Nico just responds with another cough, and Hazel quickly abandons the room, leaving her brother to his misery.
By the time that he can finally go to sleep, nose raw and throat aching, he’s forgotten all about it.
#fully inspired by real life scenarios including the miserable cold that i was suffering from#the title atm is 'checkmate i couldn't lose' but it might end up changing at some point#let me know if the concept sounds interesting bc i'm already like 10.7k words in...#oh and the setting is like monterey CA so things that will be happening are beach scenes!! the steinbeck museum!! the monterey aquarium!!#aka percy's like dream trip#also the excerpt was not proofread and i don't have the energy to do that rn so hopefully it's alrightDKF#wrongcaitlyn
My PJO Episode Rankings So Far:
Episode 4: I Plunge to My Death
Episode 5: A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers
Episode 3: We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium
Episode 2: We Capture A Flag
Episode 1: I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre Algebra Teacher
Episode 6: We Take a Zebra to Vegas
Episode 7: We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of
Key:
Good — Okay — Nope
Some thoughts:
These are a lot of complaints actually but here ya go:
Episode 7 just sucked big time. My least favorite and probably the only one I actually strongly dislike.
I don’t hate Gabe. Gabe is supposed to be the Umbridge of the books. He’s supposed to be the side villain you hate more than the main villain because he’s the kind of villain that exists in real life. He’s an abuser. He’s a physical abuser and a master manipulator. That man does not hit anyone in the show. He’s just lazy with a bad attitude. Sally is not afraid of him. She’s supposed to let herself take the hits because she thinks Percy isn’t getting hit. And vice versa for Percy. He lets Gabe take it out on him because he thinks that will keep Gabe from hitting his mom. Show Gabe could never convince either of them that this was true. I hope he’s turned into a statue but I don’t think I’ll feel much triumph about it.
Pacing is way off in most scenes. I think they’re in a movie mindset and trying to cram everything into a short time and take out all unnecessary things. But they have AT LEAST 30 minutes each episode. That’s at least 4 hours total (twice as long as a movie). Breathe a little, keep some of the fluff moments. Make the confrontations longer. It’s too quick. We know Percy is OP but he’s not THAT much OP. And he has actual skill, it’s not all luck like it feels in the show?
Lotus episode probably should have not added Hermes. They should have gotten lured in and then realized something was happening and got out in 20 minutes of the episode. Then move onto Crusty and defeating him before ending with them standing in the entrance to the Underworld. Then the next episode would pick up with them talking to Charon and bribing him and going to Hades. No detours (even though Asphodel was kind of cool). We go straight to Grover almost getting dragged in and then we go to Hades and get out. Then we end with Percy defeating Ares and giving the Helm to Alecto. Last episode starts with the TV interview and the iconic free appliances (I swear if they cut that from the show I’m going to riot). Then Percy goes to Olympus and the back to Camp and everything is normal until the last ten minutes when Luke brings Percy into the forest and reveals his true colors. We end with Percy’s promise to be back next summer and he and Annabeth leave Camp to go home.
I don’t know. Let me know if anyone wants to see how I would have organized the season if I was in charge.
Ok so I just watched episode 5 of the pjo show and honestly I might get dragged for this but I have some very real criticisms of it that I want to share. And if you enjoy the show that’s fine, I’m enjoying it to but at the same time I have a lot of issues with it and want to talk about it because I think being able to be real and critical of stuff that you like is important.
I think I’ll start with the pacing because that’s my biggest issue with it rn. It is moving so fast it feels like it’s just doing the spark notes version of the book. And ik we are all on the train of adaptations not having to be exactly like the book anymore, (which is literally just a thing that came about bc of this show and if it was any other show to book movie I think ppl would have a different tune but that is an entirely different conversation that maybe I’ll talk about later because I find it very interesting tbh), but the show is cutting out a lot of stuff that I feel was very important to the characters and in the books. I don’t know if this us because of the episode count or the episode length of if it’s the right, maybe it’s all three, but I feel like because the pacing is so fast the story is just breezing past a lot of emotional beats.
Which brings me to my next point. I have not felt a single thing watching any of these episodes. In fact I felt more about this show when I watching a single clip from episode 5 on TikTok than I did while watching the actual episode even at that clip. The show is so bad at building tension for literally anything. And I know everyone hates the movies and all that but the movies scene with Mrs Dodds had more tension and life than the scene did in the show. And I’ve heard people dispute “oh Percy has been seeing stuff all his life he probably thought that this was just that and didn’t realize it was real” but that has nothing to do with this. Why didn’t Mrs Dodds lead him away from all the other students? Why would she attack him in broad daylight when she’d aware that Chiron and a satyr are there? Or even if she didn’t know Chiron was there if she knew there was a demigod there she should’ve at least suspected the presence of a satyr.
The chimera fight was also very disappointing. Now I don’t remember exactly how this fight went in the books or in the movies but I don’t need to remember to know that this fight as equally tensionless and emotionless as the Mrs Dodds fight. And yah, they’re kids, it doesn’t need to be some epic battle or anything, but there should be tension. We should feel a least a little nervous even if we know what’s going to happen. Ngl. I don’t even know what to say about the Medusa fight bc I don’t even remember what happened. I don’t remember what happened in the books when it came to Medusa besides Percy cutting off her head and sending it to the gods. I’d definitely have to reread the books again before I comment on the change of theme surrounding Medusa and like half of the main theme of the series because Rick did some serious reconning with this stuff but unfortunately my books are lost somewhere in my basement.
I do think the Minotaur fight was fine really good though. The bond between Percy and his mom was built up really well and it was pretty devastating with that last scene between them. You could really feel the impact that Sally’s “death” had on him. However, it was so fucking dark it was hard to see half of what was happening and I’m gonna talk about that more later.
The next thing I want to talk about is the acting/casting. And before anyone says anything this has nothing to do with Annabeth being black or Percy not having black hair. Their characters feel flat and honestly I think that if it’s anyone’s fault it’s the directors and the script. I’ll use Walker as a reference because he’s the only one I’ve seen in anything else, in The Adam Project he was brilliant. Like there were multiple times where his performance alone had me in tears. That movie had me ugly sobbing at least three times and Walker was definitely part of the reason why.
In the pjo show he just feels… dull. And a tad bit lifeless which is baffling. How do you even make a character like Percy Jackson that, I’m sorry to say but, boring. Even the movies managed to give him more personality than the show, and I genuinely hate to say that but if I had to rank all the Percy’s show Percy is at the bottom which is so hard to say because Walker is perfect for this role but still he has more Percy Personality in that Kraft Mac and Cheese ad that he did with Ryan Reynolds. I do realize that part of this could be because we don’t have Percy’s inner monologue, sorta like what happened with Harry in Harry Potter, but there are ways to combat that like having a character be more expressive and stuff and that is also just not happening.
*(Also if anyone of curious my Percy Ranking goes 1: book Percy, 2: musical Percy, 3: movie Percy, 4: show Percy).
Speaking of expressiveness, Leah as Annabeth is also very disappointing because in her interviews she seems so Annabeth and I can see why Rick choose her but in the show all of her lines are delivered the exact same and the most emotion we get from her is a pinch of her eyebrows. And it’s a similar issue with Walker because he doesn’t emote that much either and neither does Aryan so I’m definitely thinking that it’s an issue with the directing instead of the actors. I don’t have much to say about Aryan. He’s ok, he has the same issues as the others of just not having a lot of emotion or very good dialogue/line delivery but again I don’t think that’s his fault and instead the direction of the show.
Listen I think they’re all incredible and the chemistry that they have in interviews is amazing. But the fact that I can see more of their characters in interviews than the actual show is insane, especially because it’s so obvious they all care about their characters and the world of Percy Jackson so much that I think if they were left on their own they could do this show perfectly but someone behind the scenes is stamping down their performances for the sake of the show taking itself too seriously.
Charlie and Dior were both great for the screen time they had. I mean not much to say about them tbh bc they didn’t have that much screen time but Dior’s scream after her spear was broken was literal gold. Adam Copeland as Ares was amazing and Lin Manuel Miranda as Hermes is quite possibly the worst thing that they could’ve ever done.
I know a lot of people were praising the change they made with Annabeth and Percy’s relationship and how that instead of disliking each other because of their parents they disliked each other because of bad personal impressions. But honestly I have to disagree. If I remember correctly Annabeth disliked him because he was son of Poseidon, and Percy disliked Annabeth because she was rude to him. And to me that made perfect sense because Annabeth was literally being indoctrinated by the gods/what they teach at camp for years/half her childhood why wouldn’t she hate Percy based solely on the fact her mom hates his dad? And I think that was actually kind of important as a character trait and I’m pretty bummed it was changed. (Ngl tho like I said earlier I haven’t read the books in a long time so I could be wrong about this, I’m just basing this off what other people have said about the beginning of their relationship in reference to the show and the books).
Also going back to what I said about the lighting ‼️SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 5 ‼️this really pissed me off because so many shows do this and it only started becoming a real problem in recent years. In episode 5 when Percy and Annabeth are entering the amusement park it is so goddamn dark I could not see what was happening. I have no idea what that machine over Percy’s head at the entrance was or looked like. I don’t know why it made him so scared because I could not see it. I could not see their faces as they were talking. I could literally barely see where they were when they panned out to show them walking through the amusement part and this makes no sense to me. You have this huge elaborate set that I would really like to see but it is so dark the only things I can make out is a ferris wheel and maybe a bumper car? I could not see shit, it was so annoying and so many new shows do this where the scenes at night are just so dark you cannot see anything. And I get that sometimes it’s intentional, you’re not supposed to see what’s going on, but this is not one of those scenes so why am I having such a hard time finding our main characters?
I really need to reread the books again and when I do I will add more to this probably or just remake the post. But so far I think the show is really mediocre and pretty disappointing, and I think it’s important to point this stuff out and not just heap piles of praise onto the show just because it’s written by the og writer of the book. We’re definitely going to get more seasons and I would like those seasons to be better than this one and actually let the actors shine and for the show to reflect what was so amazing about the books. Also, I just want to say that there are moments/stuff that I like about the show and as critical as I am of it it’s because I like the series, not because I’m just trying to be a hater. But seriously, I used to hate the movies with every fiber of my being but because of the show I have a new found appreciation for them, which I think that in and of itself says a lot about how the show has been so far.
Chapter 20 - I Battle My Jerk Relative
Theme of the day: War
Y’all I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna finish these last few chapters before the tv show comes out!! This year really didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to go but by the gods I’ll have at least one goal done no matter how skewed it got 😅 I was really like I’ll be able to read all the Olympus series in a year sjkdfhsd shit happens.
On to the chapter, “war” seems a bit self explanatory since this is when Percy confronts Ares. While Ares isn’t the one to have formed the idea of pitting the Big Three against each other, but he’s enticed by the idea of WWIII, a three-way war. Luke was lucky that it was Ares who caught him, since he probably was the easiest of the Olympians to manipulate (like hey... you could turn me in or you could let me go and start a giant war 😏). It really was a brilliant plan, as I said in my last chapter post, because it takes advantage of the Olympians’ weaknesses and paranoia. And the only way for it to go wrong was for a child to complete his quest against all odds despite having to 1) trek across the country, 2) face countless monsters, 3) thwart trickery from evil masterminds, and 4) trek across the country again. Percy really had very low chances to make it out alive. But he also lives off of spite and proving people wrong lol.
It’s interesting how each pjo book up until the final one is about Percy delaying a war in some way (kinda a theme with Riordan’s books lmao). The start of the chapter shows the beginnings of war with Hades’ army starting to rise up from the Underworld, causing massive earthquakes and fires and general chaos. Like a harbinger of a greater battle. In the immediate sense, it’s a taste of what could happen if an Olympic civil war occurs, but it’s also a bit of foreshadowing to the actual war that will take place in the future. Just like this whole book, it’s setting up what’s to come.
Continuing on that theme, Percy’s battle with Ares really culminates everything he’s learned on how to fight so far, and it sets the stage for what the readers should expect the rest of his battles to go in the series. It makes me think of the final climax of The Last Olympian, how Percy chooses to use his brain and his heart rather than his brawn against Luke, because those are the things that truly matter in the end. In this case, while Percy does use his strength and demigod powers, the reason he wins against Ares is because he uses his intelligence. It really correlates his battle with Echidna, since at that point he didn’t have enough experience to fight with more than just instincts. Actually since St. Louis, Percy has had to rely on his brain when confronting enemies, maybe that encounter influenced him to do that more. And with Ares, he finds that just his instincts doesn’t cut it. He forms a strategy vs Ares’ brute force. Percy even remembers Annabeth’s words from an earlier chapter: “Ares has strength. That’s all he has. Even strength has to bow to wisdom sometimes.” Like the old saying, the pen is mightier than the sword! Which is really ironic in this context lmao. Speaking of irony, it’s funny how Luke’s advice on how to sword fight helps Percy in his battle. The very man behind the robbery and evil plot being a reason Percy survives this quest lol. I know it’s addressed in hoo, but it’s strange how Ares is all brute force and no strategy, because the latter is such a huge part of war?? And it’s not like the ancient Greeks didn’t use strategy in their battles. But ig that’s what Athena is for 🤔
Other ways war and its effects is sprinkled in the chapter without an actual war in bullets bc I’m too tired to fully analyze these very sad things:
Percy mourning losing his mom (again)
Percy compartmentalizing his grief to focus on his mission
Despite winning his battle, Percy not feeling very victorious but instead feeling drained bc there’s no true winner for those in a war
Moving on to something a bit opposite, I can’t not talk about Annabeth giving Percy her camp necklace. Two people, potential enemies, reconciling as Annabeth says. The act is a physical symbol of Annabeth’s words from ch 16 (moreso than the oreos lol). She’s showing how she’s truly on Percy’s side, setting aside an ancient rivalry. In the face of war, Annabeth will fight with Percy and not against him. Kinda mirrors their moment in Blood of Olympus under the Parthenon doesn’t it? 🥹💖
Small things:
Can you believe a child taunted a literal god and the god fell for it
Like Ares could’ve been you’re beneath me and let him feel the wrath of Hades but instead he was like y’know what Ima fight this kid. he called me a coward.
Percy attributes his ability to observe things with his ADHD so ig that is a demigod trait. But he is extremely good at it.
hello i found a site to download pjo in good quality so that’s what i did today using the office wi fi. anyway live thoughts under the cut
HE SAID THE THING!!! i feel like i’m ascending rn i’m so serious
that crackly pubescent quality of Walker’s voice is 1. surprisingly pleasant to hear and 2. reminds me so much that he’s so young. so baby
the way the colours literally change when Grover appears in his life. Grover and Percy besties 4ever agenda
Chiron!
SALLY JACKSON MOM OF THE CENTURY
Grover psychoanalysing Nancy is so real
also their little sandwich exchange,,, please besties 4ever
oh i don’t know what all that bitching about the mrs Dodds reveal was, it looks amazing
nooo Percy’s betrayed little ‘Grover?’ when he starts talking to the other principal
idk what people were talking about with Gabe. he’s like the exactly casually abusive asshole man. their situation was never like. crazy abuse. it was always the guy who’s too lazy to work but likes to think he’s the authority of the house even though he’s so dependent on her he would be out on the street, stupid, doesn’t do shit except spend her money and combust when angry
Percy literally thinks he’s been betrayed by his best friends AND that he’s going actually insane and Walker is great at showing that internal conflict
and like. people have such a warped perception of abuse victims that Sally being like. a little sassy and raising her voice at him while this still being an abusive relationship is unthinkable for them
oh the beach house…
oh Percy’s monologue is reminding me exactly of the moment i fell in love with pjo. oh i’m emotional
here’s how posally can still win
‘like Jesus?’
oh i’m feeling it. oh no words just excitement
Grover: ‘lore lore lore…. also i’m 24 whoops, here’s a minotaur to fight’
Sally reaching over to hold Percy to the seat over his seatbelt…
i KNOW there are edits of their goodbye set to boygenius or mitski that will absolutely tear my heart out
Percy’s loyalty is so obvious from the very first episode
the desperate way he kills the minotaur. love
i’m surprised i haven’t really seen people talking about the end credit scene. it’s GORGEOUS!!
overall thoughts: i’m extremely biased in that i really wanted to like it as i was going in and i have to say i wasn’t disappointed or dissatisfied AT ALL! i really don’t have anything negative to say that’s not nitpicking, like i wish there was an extra 1-2 lines about Dodds never existing to hammer that sense of wrongness in. or some mention of just why the blue candy is so special. Walker really embodies Percy, Aryan has all these little quirks that that just so Grover. the music transports you in, and overall art direction is extremely truthful to the experience of reading those books. it’s a fantastic pilot and it has me so so so excited to watch more! which i’ll probably do tomorrow
15 DAYS AWAY FROM THE PERCY JACKSON TV SHOW WOOOO!!
Feeling great guys, it’s been raining cats and dogs out where I live and I just had to walk back in it.
I worked a little more on the map and I made the wonderful choice to just giggle and see how it would work if I used Octavian (with my height hc) as a ruler for the walls (if anyone asks, I imagine they tower over people, it’s very hard to free climb them just because of sheer height. They’re as tall to keep monsters out or at least slow them down- probably more on that when I talk about sentry/guard duty in Camp, since camp doesn’t get to be included in the safe bubble.)
But this is how it turned out,
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/15323a678501ae04a0b616eadcbbf0f1/ec7866c6f5319883-3b/s540x810/377a788437cb2985c0dd7f13a9c0543a257ecc47.jpg)
I include this update purely because it’s so funky looking, but if anyone would want to know I used the idea that Octavian is at least 6ft here (*insert my various ‘Octavian towers over everyone else and whenever there are camp photos where everyone’s gathered up his head is either always cut off in the pic’ I say at least 6ft because I put him on the taller side of the 6-6’11 range but for the ease of the number I chose a nice round 6ft*)
But that makes the concept wall (that I think is at least like 50 ft. No I won’t be converting that to anything more useful, feet is the only measurement that makes sense in my brain) but that makes the ‘wall’ (big purple blob) in the photo around 36ft tall. Which.. I’ll be honest I have no sense of scale but that seems very small. I think the wall is at least maybe 54-ish feet. Or 9 Octavians if anyone is wondering.
But working on that… instead of layout. I have it roughly figured out but I don’t want to draw it yet, maybe I will in a little but not right now.
Okay uhhhh. I started TSOA and it’s such a nice cool-down read, it’s really light and easy to blow through and after spending my days with they Odyssey and Iliad it’s a nice change of pace. I’ve been working on some of my PJO oc’s so I’ll probably throw them in sprinkled throughout here and there. Also I’ve decided to try and play around with a newer art style. And I might get out some more Centurion stuff, or the security of Camp Jupiter (That, that is what I will be working on) because it’s great.
Okay I gotta get ready to go to one of my friends choir concerts and I don’t want to arrive looking like I just fell out of my window and fell asleep in the rain.
#idk how to tag this#hehe :3#pjo octavian#I don’t know why I did the Octavian thing but I wanted to draw him and the tower made me giggle#I had to write down notes for one of my friends who broke their arm and it’s all fine and dandy but I swear to the Gods it’s sucks-#okay bye#The security post is on its way now because I said so
2024 READING LOG
I’ve seen people make lists like this and i decided to make one myself! I got back into reading Published Books in January 2024 after a long time only reading ao3 (admittedly quite a lot) and started a list in my phone so i didn’t have to remember what books in a series i’d already read (always my downfall as a kid at the library). We’re going by author because that’s easiest.
First up: Rick Riordan! (Was the release of the new PJO show a month before the catalyst in all this? Probably. But i never turn down a good reread.) Over the year i made it through all five Percy Jackson and the Olympians audiobooks, all five Heroes of Olympus audiobooks, the three Kane Chronicles books, and the first Magnus Chase book. All rereads, many times, with the exception of Magnus Chase. Hopefully in the next year i’ll get caught up on the rest of the Riordanverse.
Next up is Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series! I took the first two paperbacks to a family reunion and then have been devouring the rest as fast as the library app will allow. So far i’ve read through book twelve (and 7.5) in the series.
Next up is Lev Grossman, because i read all three of his Magicians trilogy for the first time after i rewatched the Magicians tv show (not for the first time).
I also read Sally Green’s Half Bad trilogy this year after yet another rewatch of Netflix’s The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself, just to see what the original source was.
I started dipping my toes into Terry Pratchett’s Discworld with the Watch series, and i’ve made it through the first four of those.
Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series has a wonderful audiobook narrator, and i’ve listened to the first four of those too.
I started the Game of Thrones books because why not (not based on a tv watch this time, although i should maybe finish that series at some point) and have made it slowly through a Game of Thrones reread and Clash of Kings first-time so far.
Also got Penny Louise’s mystery crime series recommended to me and i read the first one, Still Life, which was good enough that i’ll add the series into the library holds rotation.
Speaking of rec’s, the only non-fiction book i read this last year is Madeline Pendleton’s I Survived Capitalism and All I Got Was This Lousy Tshirt. An actual finance book memoir for the struggling broke people? It was excellent.
I also read Katy L Wood’s Poison in the Blood several times in actual paperback form, a post-vampire-apocalypse book with western vibes. Which is an off the walls description but it is also very good.
And i read the first book in Diane Duane’s wizards series, because i was looking to see if the library had her Middle Kingdoms books and they don’t (yet) but they did have So You Want To Be A Wizard available and it brought up nostalgia from reading that when i was like twelve. So i read it again, and loved it all over again.
Last but never least was the Fellowship of the Ring audiobook, which is so often my ‘i can’t sleep so i’ll listen to this with my eyes shut’ series that it was surprisingly difficult to Pay Attention to the Actual Words.
48 books in a variety of audio and ebook and paperback. Some months i read nothing, some weeks i zipped through four or five books.
I apologize for how long this post was, and the overuse of parentheses.
What were you reading in 2024? Leave a comment, send me a rec, tag me in a post of your own!
3 Ships: super to narrow down but as of right now I’ll go with Percy x Annabeth from PJO (perfected friends to lovers), Ava x Beatrice from Warrior Nun (also perfected friends to lovers but differently) and Buffy x Faith from BTVS (so bad for each other but SO much fun and narratively interesting! Plus I am badly hyper-fixated on Faith right now) (ask me again tomorrow and I’ll probably have 3 different answers)
First ever ship: hard to narrow down the timeframe exactly, but it was probably either Steve x Peggy from the MCU (you know what, I don’t have a problem with his ending in Endgame), Spitfire (Wally x Artemis) from Young Justice, or percabeth
Last Song: Sweet Tooth by Maya Hawke
Last Movie: Blackbeard’s Ghost (1968) (underrated classic, perfect silly and non-scary Halloween movie)
Currently Reading: After the Funeral by Agatha Christie (my all time favorite author)
Currently Watching: The Good Place (again), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (hard to believe this is only my second complete watch through. I feel like I’ve seen it so many more times than that due to all of the analysis I’ve read/watched, fanfics I’ve read, and mini marathons of my favorite episodes), Killing Eve (first time! I know it doesn’t end well but canon can be whatever I want it to be), Leverage (again) and I’m about to start another Haunting of Hill House rewatch (I’ve already watched Bly Manor this month and I am ready to be hurt again)
Currently Consuming: A bag of popcorn with an unholy amount of salt poured onto it (just how I like it)
Currently Craving: Sleepy Time tea with honey
This was tons of fun and a good reminder that the people in my phone are also people in real life (weird).
Some no pressure tags: @girl4music @lizlives @pizazzmcjazz @idontknowmynamesometimes @mitzle @urfrndlynbhdemigirl @kyratheempress @sonoroustempest @eddieheart
tag 9 people to get to know better
Tagged by @coraniaid. Lots of cheating answers here!
3 ships: Faith x Buffy from BTVS (Fuffy!!) I'm pretty focused. (I'll ignore other Eliza Dushku characters, and uh, that leaves, to a much much MUCH lesser extent...) Wil x Vivian (from Saving Face) and Lucy x Amy (from D.E.B.S.) But I don't even know the ship names for those 2 so you can see how much of my brain they are taking up.
First ever ship: I think Mulder x Scully from X-Files was probably my first ever ship. (Although I did not know the term MSR and was not aware of fandom online.) I wasn't super invested, personally they don't really DO IT for me, but I was rooting for them to get together. One of these days I'll do a proper watch / rewatch. (I stopped watching regularly once I went to college.)
Last song: (double cheating album answer) Bad Bunny's new album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Manana. AND the soundtrack from the Out of Sight movie.
Last movie: Ouijia: Origin of Evil. (Last background movie rewatch: House on Haunted Hill, the 1999 version)
Currently reading: Just started the Bring It On: The Complete Story of the Cheerleading Movie That Changed, Like, Everything (No Seriously) book, by Kase Wickman. (JFC that's a title)
Currently watching: Bob's Burgers for fun (yay! Louise is my favorite), and just finished The Fall of the House of Usher (this was just OK for me, I much prefer Midnight Mass and the two Hauntings). I think Chucky will be next! (gotta get caught up on season two)
Currently consuming: Shrimp spring rolls and a Boston cream donut.
Currently craving: Halloween chocolate candy. And marshmallow peanuts. And candy corn.
Thanks this was fun. I'm having a rough October and this helped.
Will Solace Personality
@onthishamsterwheel I... apologize for taking so long to make this post. I know your requested it ages ago, but I have been... extraordinarily busy and my ask box overwhelming so I’ve only just started answering the longer more complicated ones.
So, Canon Will Solace’s Personality.
(it got long, and doesn’t really dive into TOA, so warning if you wish to read below the cut)
In PJO proper we don’t have much of will, only one scene with him.
‘Poison on the dagger,’ she mumbled. ‘Pretty stupid of me, huh?’ Will Solace exhaled with relief. ‘It’s not so bad, Annabeth. A few more minutes and we would’ve been in trouble, but the venom hasn’t gotten past the shoulder yet. Just lie still. Somebody hand me some nectar.’ I grabbed a flask. Will cleaned out the wound with the godly drink while I held Annabeth’s hand. ‘Ow,’ she said. ‘Ow, ow!’ She gripped my fingers so tight they turned purple, but she stayed still like Will asked. Silena muttered words of encouragement. Will put some silver paste over the wound and hummed words in Ancient Greek – a hymn to Apollo. Then he applied fresh bandages and stood up shakily. The healing must’ve taken a lot of his energy. He looked almost as pale as Annabeth. ‘That should do it,’ he said. ‘But we’re going to need some mortal supplies.’ He grabbed a piece of hotel stationery, jotted down some notes and handed it to one of the Athena guys. ‘There’s a pharmacy on Fifth. Normally, I would never steal –’ ‘I would,’ Travis volunteered. Will glared at him. ‘Leave cash or drachmas to pay, whatever you’ve got, but this is an emergency. I’ve got a feeling we’re going to have a lot more people to treat.’
(TLO pg 90)
Here he quickly takes control of the healing, and makes demands of those around him meant to respect those they’re taking from. He heals Annabeth fully and properly. He has a thing against stealing, and takes job seriously.
In TLH we see Will a few times, first speaking to Annabeth
“Annabeth!” A guy with a bow and quiver on his back pushed through the crowd. “I said you could borrow the chariot, not destroy it!” “Will, I’m sorry,” Annabeth sighed. “I’ll get it fixed, I promise. ” Will scowled at his broken chariot. Then he sized up Piper, Leo, and Jason. “These are the ones? Way older than thirteen. Why haven’t they been claimed already?” “Claimed?” Leo asked. Before Annabeth could explain, Will said, “Any sign of Percy?” “No,” Annabeth admitted.
(TLH pg 45)
Here he’s a bit rougher, focused on the chariot more than the demigods brought in. Then he ignores them right after to focus on Percy once more. This sharper manner of speaking seems likely to be his normal attitude, as even in TLO he gets sharp when not healing someone (Annabeth).
With Leo he’s vague as well, avoiding answering questions while giving him a tour and seeming uncomfortable with Leo:
“Do I get a sword?” Leo asked. Will glanced at him like he found the idea disturbing. “You’ll probably make your own, seeing as how you’re in Cabin Nine.” (TLH pg 79)
“The Titan War,” Leo repeated, “which has nothing to do with this very fine bed?” “The Titans,” Will said, like Leo was an idiot. (TLH pg 84)
He’s a bit rough here, and not the most welcoming, but they’re also worried about Percy still... not that it makes his treatment of Leo any nicer there.
Will doesn’t show up again until BOO, where Percy sees him first in a dream:
‘She’s right.’ Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. ‘Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel.’ Will’s shaggy blond hair and pale blue eyes reminded Nico of Jason Grace, but the similarities ended there. Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiledup energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in the sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as unaggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action – the camp’s best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers. (BOO pg 94)
‘I agree,’ Will said. ‘I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war.’ He looked down at his own hands with distaste. ‘Unfortunately, I’m just a healer.’ (BOO pg 94)
Will here is... described as someone soft, and calming. Which is strikingly different from the prior depictions of him, and his later depictions. Will being able to calm Clarisse with a single touch makes me inclined to believe he has some ability specifically able to calm people, whether he knows it or not.
It’s also specified that he isn’t a warrior at all, he’s a healer. But still willing to step into battle to heal his allies.
Will is seen once more at the end of BOO, when Nico is readying himself to interfere with the camp.
Nico was about to attempt it when a voice behind him said, ‘Nico?’ He spun, his sword instantly in his hand, and almost decapitated Will Solace. ‘Put that down!’ Will hissed. ‘What are you doing here?’ (BOO pg 271)
‘Me?’ Nico asked. ‘What are you doing? Getting yourselves killed?’ Will scowled. ‘Hey, we’re scouting the enemy. We took precautions.’ (BOO pg 271)
‘Fine. A very cute little satyr boy.’ Will shuddered. ‘But I delivered it. Have you ever delivered a baby?’ ‘ Um, no.’ ‘I had to get some fresh air. That’s why I volunteered for this mission. Gods of Olympus, my hands are still shaking. See?’
(BOO pg 271)
So first off, Will has delivered a baby just a short while ago... and because he needed air volunteered for a very important scouting mission to keep an eye on the enemy when he’s literally still shaking from the delivery. This is the opposite of responsible, like on several letters.
First off, he’s compromised. He’s literally shaking, he’s not able to act properly.
Second off, he’s notably not a warrior, as said in the earlier quotes. He cannot aid his team in fighting if it came to it and would thus be a liability.
Third, he’s a healer with the enemy right there and a battle about to commence. Whether the camp knew the battle was about to start or not, they do know that they need to keep their healers safe, especially their top healer (as stated by Nico earlier) and the fact that he was sent into the field like that, when he was shaky and not in the right state, is not a good idea.
And they were sent on this scouting mission to interfere with the Romans if necessary, it was a subtle action meant to sabotage them. A healer is 1. Not necessary 2. Actively a liability for not being able to help with the fighting or sabotage
This is proven a bit later, seeing how Nico had to rescue Will who was not able to fight when they were facing enemies
This time the Mist didn’t work so well. One of the onager guards yelled, ‘Hey!’ ‘Got this.’ Will sprinted off – which was possibly the stupidest diversion Nico could imagine – and six of the guards chased after him. (BOO pg 274)
‘And, uh –’ Cecil pointed – ‘somebody better help Will.’ Even in their armour, the Romans were starting to gain on Solace. Nico cursed and raced after them. (BOO pg 275)
It’s notable that he didn’t even lead all the enemies away, and they still had to fight and defeat them which took only a few seconds and that Nico handled the one’s attacking Will in about 10 seconds... making him not only useless in the fight as a whole, but possibly drawing more attention from their surroundings by running around wildly.
It shows remarkable stubbornness on his side, or knowingly misleading those that would approve such a mission to make them believe he was able to. Neither are good things when people’s lives are on the line.
And then of course there’s how he spoke to Nico about his shadow travel
Will said. ‘But, if you’re planning to shadow-travel to that command tent, forget it.’ Nico glared at him. ‘Excuse me?’
‘I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine.’ ‘No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders.’ ‘The camp is about to be destroyed –’ ‘And we’ll stop the Romans,’ Will said. ‘But we’ll do it our way. Lou Ellen will control the Mist. We’ll sneak around, do as much damage as we can to those onagers. But no shadow-travel.’ ‘But –’ ‘No.’
(BOO 271)
Now, as a disabled person let me tell you that someone who does not have what you have, and is not educated in your illness, telling you what you can and can’t do is the height of frustration. Here Will is declaring himself effectively an expert on Nico’s powers, declaring he knows Nico’s limits more than Nico does. He states that he knows exactly what will happen to Nico (and you can’t even say it’s a prophecy ability as 1. he doesn’t have those abilities and 2. they’re not working at the time anyways).
On top of that, he ignores Nico’s own autonomy and orders him to obey. No matter who the doctor is, they do not get to decide how you act or what you do. Patient consent is extremely important. He can advise Nico, but he cannot order him.
And in this Will is showing that he views himself as the ultimate authority when it comes to any matters regarding health.
This makes me inclined to believe he’s fairly arrogant when it comes to medical matters, and thus isn’t one most patients would want as a doctor. His skill with medicine aside, I have had a doctor myself whose an expert in his field, but after he outright ordered me on what I should do and dismissed my concerns I fired him and found a new one who may not have been as good, but actually respected my choices.
Respect for the patient is an absolutely vital part of being a doctor, and Will does not have that.
And moving back to the times they fought: Nico summoned some skeletons to handle a larger group of enemies and was promptly told off.
‘No,’ Nico said. ‘Let’s give them what they expect.’ He spread his hands. In front of the Romans, the ground erupted. Five skeletons clawed out of the earth. Cecil and Lou Ellen charged in to help. Nico tried to follow, but he would’ve fallen on his face if Will hadn’t caught him. ‘You idiot.’ Will put an arm around him. ‘I told you no more of that Underworld magic.’ ‘I’m fine.’ ‘Shut up. You’re not.’ From his pocket, Will dug out a pack of gum
(BOO pg 275)
Now, it is notable that Nico was exhausted here but there are several other things to note.
1. Will said he would effectively die using his powers again, obviously this was wrong, proving he doesn’t actually know the powers.
2. Will gets annoyed with him for using his powers, saying he said not to use them, and calls Nico an idiot in the process (they don’t know each other, they’ve only met now and seen each other from afar otherwise from what we’ve seen) which is rather rude to someone you barely know, not to mention as a doctor is even worse.
And it doesn’t get better from there
‘It’s medicinal. Should keep you alive and alert for a few more hours.’ Nico shoved a stick of gum into his mouth. ‘Tastes like tar and mud.’ ‘Stop complaining.’ (BOO pg 275)
‘Thanks for the skeletons,’she said. ‘Great trick.’ ‘Which he won’t be doing again,’ Will said. Nico realized he was still leaning against Will. He pushed him away and stood on his own two feet. ‘I’ll do what I need to.’ Will rolled his eyes. ‘Fine, Death Boy. If you want to get yourself killed –’ ‘Do not call me Death Boy!’ (BOO pg 276)
Here Will is dismissing Nico’s complaint about medicine (which btw, this kind of thing should be taken into account and treated respectfully, Will is acting as a doctor here and telling off his patient for not liking the medicine, rather than explaining that he can’t do much about it he tells him, a weakened and in need patient, to stop complaining).
And right after this, Will both orders him once more to not use his powers, and then also calls him Death Boy, while rolling his eyes and showing clear annoyance at Nico not listening to his orders and nearly mocking him for it, basically saying “it’s your death then” rather than actually giving a reason or just respecting Nico’s autonomy.
On top of that, Nico is also outright upset by being called Death Boy, with a very vehement response that makes me inclined to believe this may be something he’s called by people. Either that or being given a... negative nickname (which it is in this case, he is effectively being killed by his powers and is given a nickname of Death, and on top of that is being mocked at that moment, this nickname is not intended nicely) like that, for one generally hated and dismissed for his parentage is extremely upsetting for him. Possibly both of those things.
Moving on: his arguing in the field of battle when they were scouting also endangered them majorly.
NICO WASN’T SURE whether to kick himself or Will Solace. If he hadn’t been so distracted bickering with the son of Apollo, he would never have allowed the enemy to get so close. (BOO 278)
:) Will distracted Nico when they’re literally surrounded by the enemy, and thus they got attacked by the enemy.
And then there’s how he speaks to Nico about Nico’s treatment from the camp, treatment which we have quite a bit of proof of btw.
‘I don’t want a place in their camp,’ Nico snarled. ‘Or in yours. When this war is over, I’m leaving both camps for good.’ Will Solace made a sound like he’d been punched. ‘Why would you do that?’ Nico scowled. ‘It’s none of your business, but I don’t belong. That’s obvious. No one wants me. I’m a child of –’ ‘Oh, please.’ Will sounded unusually angry. ‘Nobody at Camp Half-Blood ever pushed you away. You have friends – or at least people who would like to be your friend. You pushed yourself away. If you’d get your head out of that brooding cloud of yours for once –’ (BOO pg 279)
We know Nico has been ostracized, we’ve seen it in PJO and HOO. He makes people uncomfortable, people are wary of him, even the pegasi don’t want him near them and Percy has to convince them to let him ride them. Hera herself didn’t want him in the family. Nico is clearly ostracized, and while he’s offered a place at the tables... people are wary of him. The Council of Elders is equally wary and displeased when he (and Mrs. O’Leary) are there.
Basically, we know he’s ostracized, Camp Jupiter is no better (with several noting he makes people uncomfortable and that people watched him warily).
And here Will is blaming all of that on Nico.
This is something that... makes me extremely uncomfortable. I’ve mentioned the options here before, but it means that Will is either willfully oblivious to how Nico has been treated, or knows and does not care or realize the impact, or is outright gaslighting Nico here. None of these are good looks.
And the way he speaks to Nico de-legitimizes his trauma, which as a doctor is a big no no.
He takes Nico stating he wishes to leave personally, and lashes at out Nico in result. I’m inclined to believe Will has some level of crush on Nico here, but how he goes about it is not only extraordinarily unhealthy, but also cruel to Nico.
And Nico isn’t the only one he shows poor doctor practices too.
‘No!’ Will Solace shoved Nico out of the way and got in Octavian’s face. ‘I am a son of Apollo, you anaemic loser.’ (BOO pg 280)
Insulting a sick person’s health... yeah okay, this is a big no, but with his prior displayed lack of care for his patients, or for respecting others, or his general arrogance, it’s not out of character.
And then after the battle is the final part of HOO Will.
Nico happened to glance towards the cabins and saw someone waving at him. Will Solace stood in the doorway of the Apollo cabin, a stern look on his face. He pointed to the ground at his feet, like You. Here. Now. (BOO pg 319)
‘So where were you?’ Will demanded. He was wearing a green surgeon’s shirt with jeans and flipflops, which was probably not standard hospital protocol. ‘What do you mean?’ Nico asked. ‘I’ve been stuck in the infirmary for, like, two days. You don’t come by. You don’t offer to help.’ ‘I … what? Why would you want a son of Hades in the same room with people you’re trying to heal? Why would anyone want that?’ ‘You can’t help out a friend? Maybe cut bandages? Bring me a soda or a snack? Or just a simple How’s it going, Will? You don’t think I could stand to see a friendly face?’ (BOO pg 319)
Now, let’s be honest, people in the infirmary would actually likely be distressed by having Nico there. He radiates death just in general, it’s killed plants many times before, it could have a negative effect on the patients health.
On top of that, Will asked nothing from Nico prior to that, and in fact had been noted to not having spoken to Nico since the battle. And the battle was the first time they met... and they spent most of it when Will trying to boss Nico around and Nico angry with him.
So this demand and criticism of Nico, which basically calls Nico a bad friend? It’s uh... very full of himself for Will to do.
And then of course:
‘You’re so dense,’ Will noted. ‘I hope you got over that nonsense about leaving Camp Half-Blood.’ ‘I – yeah. I did. I mean, I’m staying.’ ‘Good. So you may be dense, but you’re not an idiot.’ (BOO pg 319)
They still barely know each other, yet Will is calling him dense and implying if he wanted to leave he’d be an idiot. Overall, not a very comfortable thing.
Will wants him to stay, yet won’t stop insulting him or ordering him around.
Then of course his catchphrase:
‘Right now you couldn’t summon a wishbone without melting into a puddle of darkness, di Angelo,’ Will said. ‘I told you, no more Underworldy stuff, doctor’s orders. You owe me at least three days of rest in the infirmary. Starting now.’ (BOO pg 319)
Will once more orders him about his powers, acting as if he knows everything about them.
On top of this, this is two days after the battle and yet he’s now ordering Nico there with no actual medical support? And it’s not “You probably need more rest, you can stay in the infirmary just in case or rest in your cabin” it’s a “You’re coming to the infirmary now whether you like it or not and I won’t tell you the medical reasons for why”.
This is, in case you weren’t aware, not okay!
If Nico needed to be looked over and hadn’t yet, then that’s one thing (something to be said), but it seems Will just wants Nico there, so orders him.
Lack of acknowledging Nico’s autonomy is a common theme that bleeds into TOA as well.
Now, I won’t be doing this much analysis of Will in TOA, as he’s got way too many speaking roles there for me too and you can also check my #anti solangelo tag for more info on TOA stuff (I speak of my most notable issue HERE)
But basically, the lack of care for Nico’s rights as a patient and the ethical issues continue there. I find that the issues shine through the most when interacting with Nico, and with others he seems, if not nicer, less bossy. He still orders people around, still gets snappy regularly, but it’s not nearly the same level as he is with Nico.
He outright dismisses Nico’s comfort in several points,
Will turned to me. “I apologize for my boyfriend.” Nico rolled his eyes. “Could you not—” “Would you prefer special guy?” Will asked. “Or significant other?” “Significant annoyance, in your case,” Nico grumbled. (THO pg 51)
Here Nico seems to not want to be called his boyfriend, but Will steamrolls right over him and dismisses his words. Nico’s comfort in the relationship is important and Will should respect his boundaries. Not that he has from the start, so that’s in character.
I won’t be digging much farther into this ngl, this is already a massive analysis and TOA requires a whole nother set that would be even longer than HOO. So, In Conclusion.
Will is all but unmatched in healing amongst the demigods. He’s powerful, able to do things such as reattach limbs, remove poison, and just generally restore health. He is arrogant though, particularly in relation to his healing abilities. This may be due to him having no skill in other Apollo powers, but it results in him being bossy, snappy, and very full of himself when it comes to the realm of healing. He is capable of a gentle bedside manner for most, but if you don’t obey his orders he gets demanding or rude at best. He doesn’t respect boundaries and is willing to dismiss people’s experiences (either through ignorance or outright malice) in order to get what he wants.
Overall: he’s not a character I like, and that undoubtedly colored this analysis. Most of his speaking lines prior to TOA revolve around Nico, and thus how he treats Nico stars heavily.
I hope this helps
Young Gods AU Pipabeth Fanfic Snippet
As the title says, this is a small part of my Pipabeth-centric fic inspired by velinxi's Young Gods/Hades PJO AU. The specific drawing that appears in this snippet is linked here (it’s the top one). More info is below the line if you’re interested, and I hope you enjoy!
EDIT: I posted a longer version (though still not complete) version of this here
All three heads jerked up to look at her. The small boy turned, and Annabeth caught sight of a jagged sword hanging from a chain at his hip: black as the depths of Tartarus and glowing an eerie purple. Just as the boy sucked the life from the grass where he stood, his blade sucked the light from the surrounding air. It was unlike any weapon Annabeth had seen before, and it did little to calm her nerves.
The boy tilted his head. "Percy?" he asked. "Who is that?"
A familiar laugh lilted through the courtyard before Perseus could answer, and Annabeth's heart fluttered at the sound. "Don't you know, little godling?"
Piper's heady rose perfume enveloped them both as she looped an arm around Annabeth's waist, drawing her closer until her back was pressed to Piper's front. "Her name is Annabeth!" Piper proclaimed. "Favored daughter of Athena! Warrior-architect of Olympus!" She jabbed a finger at the trio. "And she has never known defeat!"
Annabeth gripped the beak of her mask and tugged it lower on her face. "Gods damn it, Piper," she muttered through clenched teeth. Her cheeks burned—partially from the grandiose introduction, but mainly because Piper's hand on her thigh was dangerously close to ... well, all of Piper was dangerously close to her. It was best to leave it at that.
I posted it 😭 I couldn’t resist anymore. I’ve been working on this fic for a while, but it will probably be a while yet before I publish it because I am fighting this writing rut that I’ve been in. I’m aiming to finish it before I go back to school, so by the end of August. It doesn’t have a title yet (titles are notoriously difficult for me), and I’m also not sure how many chapters it will have. I’m guessing it will have between 3-5k words; I had planned for it to be one chapter but I might divide it up to make it easier for me to finish and start publishing it. It depends on where the natural breaks are. If this gets a decent amount of notes I’ll post updates about it and hopefully some more snippets, otherwise I’ll just make one post when it’s ready to go up. Regardless, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed! <3
