i finally finished Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe and whew what a book. probably one of my favorite non-fiction books i've ever read, and the audiobook was excellent.

this book really gives a lot of context and nuance around the case, and i really really enjoyed the "deep dive" into Dolours Price and Brendan Hughes. especially with Dolours Price, because we really get to follow her from the start, first as peaceful student protestor, then her radicalization, and ultimately her disillusionment and trauma following the hunger strikes. both with the Price sisters and Hughes we really get to see the kind of... long-term effects, mentally and physically, of so much trauma and violence. but i never felt that Keefe was unfairly harsh nor did he try to demonize armed resistance; in my opinion, he did seem to have an understanding about why people like Hughes and Price did what they did. he does criticize the loyalists and the British army as well, and even comments on the asymmetry in accountability after the good friday agreement, but overall the book is definitely way more focused on the provisional IRA-- it's definitely not a full look at the troubles, but i think it's a good starting point. it's definitely written for American audiences.

which brings me to my criticisms. about half-way through i started looking up the work of Ed Moloney, who is referenced a lot throughout the book & collaborated with Keefe, sharing resources and interviews, etc. Moloney does not like this book. he alleges that Keefe purposefully omitted primary sources that he himself gave him, that confirmed the presence of informers in Divis Flats as well as confirmed the use of the so-called "mysterious radio." Moloney does consider that this could have been something publishers made him do-- after all, the "good vs evil" / "perfect victim" narrative (which Keefe even acknowledges in the book!) is far more digestible than the messy reality of the time. it's really a shame, because i felt that Keefe had otherwise presented it consistently and with great skill and honesty up until the very end. there's really no need to omit information-- the murder of Jean McConville is unjustifiable, regardless. Moloney then goes on to call into question Keefe's history as a policy advisor within the US Office of the Secretary of Defense-- which was not disclosed with Moloney while they were working together, and seems to be purposefully obfuscated in Keefe's author/journalist profile. which leads Moloney to believe the omission was intentional and Keefe's own personal decision.

there's also the matter of the way Keefe presents this book. he calls it "narrative non-fiction" rather than history or true crime. i think he does this solely so he can get around the fact that this book has NO numbered footnotes. the way the sources are compiled for this book is criminal, and it makes a lot of the information appear as if it's all coming directly from Keefe. the reality is that a lot of this information is already very well-known and has been thoroughly investigated & covered by Irish journalists like Moloney, and it's their work that Keefe is presenting to his American audience. i didn't realize this until i looked up Moloney's articles, because i was listening to the audiobook (which also doesn't even include any kind of sourcing at the end, it's only in the print copies.)

ultimately, i did really enjoy this book. i do think it's incredibly well-researched and does a great job exploring the aftermath of colonial violence and trauma and how even decades and generations later it is still carried on in the people's memory. also some excellent commentary from those involved in the Boston Tapes; there's a particular line towards the end from Anthony McIntyre that i keep thinking about:

How will the truth of what really happened during the Troubles ever come out, he asked, if the authorities file murder charges against anyone who has the nerve to talk about it? ‘I would describe the PSNI stance as one of prosecuting truth, rather than procuring truth,’ he said in an interview.

all that to say if you read this i would take Keefe's final conclusions with a grain of salt. also definitely read Moloney's article alongside this book. i don't necessarily believe one over the other, since the argument could be made that Moloney is just trying to protect those involved. but i do think it's important to question Keefe's choices in how he presented this information. we're never going to know the truth-- just like Keefe calls into question the memories and testimonies of those involved, we should also question him, and why he's telling us this story, and why he's telling it in this way.

Artist Loft vs Himi Jelly Gouache

Out of curiosity, I decided to try the Artist Loft jelly gouache set. (My boyfriend took me to michaels to buy some art supplies to entertain myself during game night because i had a slightly stressful day and didn't feel like playing games lmao, so i just kind of stumbled across it and said, wth why not XD)

Here are my opinions on the set. I purchased the 24 set that comes with the brushes. It retails for about $24-$25. I had a couple coupons ($5 off $15+ and a 20% off) I purchased other things, but had I only purchased that, the set would have cost somewhere around $18 after tax i believe.

On amazon, the Himi gouache 24 set costs about $25-$26 and I think it also comes with brushes. So the sets are pretty comparable.

I have the 18 set of Himi gouache, that does not include brushes (tbh I cannot remember what I paid for it I bought it a couple years ago).

Having used both, I would say that the paints perform similarly and act as gouache should. (I could not find any information on the artist loft set about archival quality, but I scan most of my finished pieces, so it isn't a huge concern for me tbh.

The packaging is identical, the only real difference I noticed packaging wise is that the foil sealing the cups was incredibly difficult to remove from the artist loft set. I literally spent a collective 6 hours over 3 days peeling the foils off because they were stuck (and it would have taken longer had my dad not offered to help).

Content wise, the biggest issue with the set compared to himi was the quantity. Himi gouache cups contain 30ml of paint and the artist loft cups only contain 27ml i believe it is (which is not disclosed on the external packaging like it is with himi). They also seem to stain a bit more than the himi gouache, but probably not much more really. The artist loft set is also a bit more temperamental when it comes to adding water. Just a touch too much water, and the paint became extremely thin and streaky. I mostly got by with just the water left on my brush from rinsing and used that the thin the paint enough to use properly. The himi gouache was a bit more forgiving with the water, though it also gets streaky if you add too much.

Pigmentation was fine and each color acted as I expected it to. I did notice that the gouache skinned over rather quickly (within about an hour of use, the top layer already skinned, which the himi gouache did not skin so quickly when I first got it.) Overall, I think for a house brand, it did quite well and the price was well enough in line with the competitors to make it a solid choice if that is what is available to you (especially if you have coupons and vouchers).

HOWEVER, the fact that I had to spend hours (my fingers are still a little sore btw lol) peeling foils off of the cups before I could even dive into the paints was enough to make me low-key regret buying it. Now that its open and I've used it, I very much enjoy the set, and having 24 colors is great for people that want some variety and dont want to mix their colors. (I default to color mixing all the time though, so I could literally get by with the main 4 paints if i needed to haha, I just like options).

Do I recommend Artist Loft Jelly gouache?

Yes I do. However, I only recommend it if you can get a discount on it. Otherwise, I think you would do just as well getting the himi gouache unless you don't want to wait for it to ship and Artist Loft is in stock at the store. (remember, opening the artist loft cups is a literal nightmare and himi peeled off much easier).

Background of the case : Vishal Tiwari v. Union of India & Ors.

A bunch of 04 Writ Petitions have been filed before the #SupremeCourt of India in the wake of #Hindenberg Report.

The report alleges, that the #Adani Group of companies has manipulated its share prices; failed to disclose transactions with related parties and other relevant information concerning related parties in contravention of the regulations framed by SEBI; and violated other provisions of securities laws. The report also states that Hindenburg Research has taken a short position in the Adani Group companies through US traded bonds and non-Indian traded derivative instruments.

Directions sought in Writ Petitions

The 04 #WritPetitions separately seek directions from the Apex Court;

Directions to the Union of India and the #UnionMinistryofHomeAffairs to constitute a committee headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court to investigate the contents of the report published by Hindenburg Research;

Directions to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to register an #FIR against Mr. Nathan Anderson (#founder of Hindenburg Research) and his associates for short selling, and for directions to recover the profits yielded by the short selling to compensate investors;

Sought a #courtmonitoredinvestigation by a #SpecialInvestigationTeam or by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the allegations of fraud and the role played by top officials of leading public sector #banks and other #lender institutions

Sought directions to any investigative authority to: (i) investigate the Adani Group companies under the supervision of a sitting judge of this Court; and (ii) investigate the role of LIC and SBI in these transactions.

Expert Committee Constituted by Apex Court

The Bench of the Apex Court comprising Hon’ble CJI Dr. D Y Chandrachud, Hon’ble Justice P S Narasimha & Hon’ble Justice J B Pardiwala vide their order dt. 02.03.23 constituted an Expert committee to protect the investors from the volatility of the kind headed by Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, a former judge of the Supreme Court. The committee comprises Mr. O P Bhatt, Justice J P Devadhar (retired), Mr. KV Kamath,Mr. Nandan Nilekani & Mr. Somashekhar Sundaresan.

Report in two months

The Committee is requested to furnish its report in sealed cover to this Court within two months.

The Committee shall remit on the following:

Provide overall assessment of the situation including the relevant causal factors which have led to the volatility in the securities market in the recent past;

To suggest measures to strengthen investor awareness;

To investigate whether there has been regulatory failure in dealing with the alleged contravention of laws pertaining to the securities market in relation to the Adani Group or other companies; and

To suggest measures to (i) strengthen the statutory and/or regulatory framework; and (ii) secure compliance with the existing framework for the protection of investors.

The Apex Court in its order dt. 10.02.2023 noted the need of reviewing existing regulatory mechanisms in the financial sector to protect Indian investors from volatilities in the market. And suggested Solicitor General of India that to seek instructions from the Union of India on the constitution and remit of an expert committee.

SEBI’s suggestion for securing the interest of the investors:

Mandatory disclosures by listed companies to facilitate free and fair price discovery and to ensure that all investors have equal access to material information for them to be able to take informed investment decisions;

 Market systems to ensure seamless trading and settlement including volatility management;

Enforcement action in the event of misconduct in the market including fraud or violations of SEBI regulations.”

With respect to the aforesaid Writ Petitions SEBI submitted, it is already enquiring into, the allegations made in the Hindenburg report as well as the market activity immediately preceding and post the publication of the report and it will not be appropriate to report the details at this stage.

There were so many different things to draw one’s eye in Kamurocho - the colors of the billboards, the blinking lights for the airplanes on top of the skyscrapers, the enhanced pictures of all the girls and boys offering their company for a night for the right price. And yet, as Akiyama stared into the distance, his chocolate-colored irises did not focus on anything in particular.

He was, in fact, gazing into the past - taking a stroll down memory lane although nothing about his overall body language suggested that. To an outsider, he was just smoking a cigarette while resting his folded arms over the railings that surrounded the rooftop of the building where Sky Finance was located.

If Akiyama was absent from his usual chair or couch from the office - there were good chances he would be up there, enjoying the fresher air of the world outside and getting his daily dose of nicotine (a paradox in itself, like many things about the man). He had been distracted enough to fail to notice the sound of steps climbing up the rest of the stairs from Sky Finance to the roof, the figure of Juliet approaching without ever causing a reaction from the moneylender.

Perhaps the girl had called to him as she made her way up there and he didn’t hear it, or perhaps the up-and-coming coliseum star had yelled for his attention for the past minute and it fell on deaf ears. It was hard to tell given how lost in his own recollections Akiyama was, only returning to the land of the living once a very human and warm hand found his arm, the pressure of Juliet’s digits finally breaking through whatever spell the loan shark had seemingly been under.

The undeniable proof that he had not been feeling like himself had been in how the cigarette fell from his digits into the alleyway down below, Akiyama incapable of catching it before losing it forever. Luckily there was no one else on ground level to complain, but there was a sheepish smile on his face while he turned around to face his protégée. 

“Aa, Juliet-chan - so sorry, I ju-” his words, however, were cut short by an unexpected gesture on her part - one of her hands went forward, brushing his usually rebellious hair out of his face. Given how inclined his body was, the dark bangs did hide his expression to a degree, and Juliet’s actions were effective in fully disclosing his countenance. It was only than that Akiyama realized she was staring at him with some concern or worry - and that caused his eyes to widen a bit, as well as leaving a bitter, guilty taste on his tongue.

He hated being the cause of worry to others - and yet, it looked like that it had been precisely what he had just done.

“Are you okay, Akiyama-san?” she asked in a low, serious whisper; and Akiyama felt like her genuine interest in his well-being (emotional or otherwise) warmed him a bit, like sunshine on an early autumn day. Smiling sincerely at long last, his own opposite hand came to rest over hers, gently removing her digits from his face but only to take it between both of his palms, squeezing it with tenderness. A non-spoken token of gratitude for her checking on him.

“I’ve been better,” he confessed instead of deflecting - his smile took a slightly sadder turn and didn’t quite catch his eyes, but he was sincere. For someone who joked about his issues and usually hid behind a wall of sarcasm and clever tirades, the fact he was admitting to not being okay to Juliet said a lot about his trust in her.

“I would appreciate a distraction, though. I could go for a few rounds of Virtua Fighter right now, if you’re free? We both know it’s the only way I’ll ever have bragging rights over the coliseum’s latest sensation,” he grinned, some of his enthusiasm returning to the loan shark. His eyes, however, conveyed a different message - whatever had been in his mind earlier... He was just not prepared to talk about it.

He really could use a game, a drink - a friend.

Her energetic affirmation had Akiyama laughing and nodding in response, pushing himself off the railings and following Juliet’s faster and excited steps down the stairs. These were the little things that mattered - acceptance; understanding; the will to persevere despite everything. As long as the loan shark had her in his corner... He would be alright.

So, for more in depth talk I suppose...

A lot of this year (as well as late last year actually) tbh has been... spent on self reflection & healing from stuff in my past if I’ma be honest. I won’t go into depth on it, since a lot of it is very personal & not stuff I like to really talk about (not to mention its uh, very trigger heavy if we’re to be honest, but I personally don’t like the thought of disclosing my trauma & past in general to people I’m not close enough to), but the tl;dr is me learning I’m more traumatized than I thought since I uh, earlier this year ended up uncovering a lotta shit I’d repressed/never addressed & always ran away from in regards to my own healing 💀

It’s... been a very emotionally intense couple of months (if not over a whole year considering when this all started), with letting myself process everything I’d buried in full. Excavating & additionally, processing years upon years worth of intense stuff that was locked away & didn’t realize... is not easy at all... but it’s necessary for healing I suppose.

So I’ve been learning to heal all of that, as well as, y’know, coping with more shit life’s thrown at me that’s been hard & been tryna figure out how to deal with it... but I mean... at this point that’s just what I’m used to so, nothing out of the ordinary I suppose sjlkfs

& Ofc health issues in & of itself are their own hassle since autoimmune disease is a bitch but what can ya do right?   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve also been diving into multiple interests in general outside of art, like writing or studying astrology stuff or my own witchcraft shit, so on? Just things to give me somethin else to do, so its another factor that’s added to me not being as active art wise. Though I’ve still kept up at least lmao, but yeah, there’s that too.

My birthday also lowkey came to pass back in august sdsjlkf so, I’ve finally hit 25 now? Ngl I still haven’t really. Processed that I’m 25 although a part of it’s also related to the whole healing from stuff but, not gonna go into depth on that here.

But yeah. A lot of that along w severing ties to some & also making new bonds & healing, has been a major focus for me. It’s not been easy a feat, but its stuff that I personally feel is necessary for me & takes priority over art. Plus, amidst this I’ve also kinda lowkey realized I’m just in general a slow artist jsdlkfs but I mean, that’s fine really. I kind of prefer taking my time w artworks & havin them turn out the way I want, so there’s that too.

Also over time come to realize what I really wanna do w my life so like. It’s, been A LOT.

Art wise I’ve been doing fine & well, I do have plans to in time re-open comms & stuff altho by that point prices will have changed & it’ll def be me being a lot pickier which ones I take (it’d be a selection process if I do reopen & v limited slots). Mainly because I just wanna make sure I’m not burning myself out like I used to be just to get by with helping on bills sometimes, & in the meantime well figure that mess out myself. Plus I lowkey wanna be able to be more self indulgent w my work so there’s that too, & also focus on art trade stuff w mutuals & other things I decide to do that are more personal.
