The world shone brighter when Oikawa’s name appeared on your phone screen, even if it was 9 o’clock at night for you. He gave you a quiet greeting, and you smiled and returned the favor, idly flipping your textbook open.  

It’s just a fact: being on opposite sides of the world from Oikawa Tooru sucked. These FaceTimes and phone calls were the closest you could get to being with him in person. Time zone differences made it so that you only had a couple hours of sacred shared time in a day. Therefore, you were determined to not waste a second of them. The second Oikawa began, so do you.

Ambitious, driven, and clever; it’s no surprise that Oikawa exceled in studying, and this was one skill he was determined to pass on to you. After complaining one day that you could never study well, Oikawa took it upon himself to become your studying mentor, showing you every tip and trick he knew. However, fate had other plans for you. Forced into a disastrous lab where your third group member ruined the experiment and ditched halfway through, you and Kuroo had to put your differences aside to not fail your assignment. “He used to read me stories when we hid,” Regulus continued, feeling like he was far away as he remembered. He could feel the blanket over his long hair, hear Sirius’s whisper and see the shining light of the torch Sirius had nicked from a Muggle store down the street. The warmth, the secrecy, the knowledge that though the world outside was chaos, they were secure where they were. “He’d get them from our tutor, I think. There was this one about a family that had a dog, and a small house, just…a normal life. And one of the little boys got hurt and his Mother fixed it. Potter nodded, expression serious, eyes on Regulus, looking mesmerized.

“I asked if it was a fiction book,” Regulus shrugged, voice flat. “The first time I read it…I didn’t think it was real. Because the mother in the story said ‘I love you’ and kissed the little boy. I thought it wasn’t real.” He turned away, mortified, because a traitorous tear slipped down his cheek. Sniffing, he wiped it away and continued, twisting his mouth up to stop from crying more.

“After times when Mother hurt us, or locked us in our rooms for days, it always made things better. To hide there with him. Like Mother couldn’t find us,” Regulus murmured, another tear falling. “I think, looking back, Sirius did things to get in trouble on purpose, sometimes. To protect me. He thought he was protecting me from knowing what our parents were like, but I knew. I knew they never…And it just got worse after I- after I got older,” he swallowed, unable to say any more, tears coming in streams, now.

Fuck. How had he allowed this to happen? He turned away, cursing himself. He was so stupid. So idiotic, to allow himself to be so ridiculously vulnerable. He berated himself in his head, the self-hatred and anxiety crashing over him in waves, goosebumps forming over his neck and nausea forming. Why had he given Potter more ammunition against him? More of a reason to run off? Surely he had enough?

But just as his breath began to speed up and he almost choked on his own sob, an arm wrapped around his shoulder and he gasped. 

“You didn’t deserve it,” Potter whispered, voice rough with emotion.

“But it happened,” Regulus said, wiping at his face, desperately trying to hide his tears, still staring outward.

But Potter’s next response was much more firm. “Never again,” he said.

Regulus tried not to. But somehow, he found himself turning into Potter’s arms, and once he was there, in the warmth and the comfort, and the security, he didn’t want to leave.

i'm writing this post because i think that a lot of non AAPI fandom bloggers could benefit from reflecting on how they view both asian cultures and asian people.

to start, we have to understand what cultural exports are. a cultural export is defined as "exchange of ideas, information, art, language and other aspects of culture among nations and their peoples in order to foster mutual understanding". it is most often used to rebrand a country in the wake of propaganda.

in the west specifically, a lot of the largest cultural exports from other countries come from east asia- in forms such as k-pop, j-fashion, idol culture, anime, k-dramas, k-beauty and c-beauty, etc. there also are other notable exports that influence the west's perception of these countries, such as technology.

enjoying these cultural exports isn't inherently bad. enjoying things like anime and kpop isn't cultural appropriation, and it's something that brings together communities around the world. however. the issue arises when people cross the line from "this is a cultural export from this country" to "this is *who* the people from this country are". reducing entire ethnic groups to one component, no matter how "positive" the component is, has far more consequences than people realize.

in essence, it is stereotyping. and it also reduces the perceived humanity of the AAPI community. because these parts of certain cultures are commodified in this way, reducing us as people to these cultural exports carries a heavy risk of commodifying us as *people*. when you as a person and community are perceived as a commodity, people feel like they are entitled to you and your identity. this is seen in stereotypes of asians as submissive and obedient (ESPECIALLY ASIAN WOMEN), and white people essentially playing dress up with being asian (like oli london). it's also seen in stereotypes of us as cold, villainous, and unfeeling (such as the head director of BLI in danger days).

these stereotypes are often a matter of life and death. in the atlanta spa shooting, the shooter confessed that he wanted to "eliminate the temptation" that these asian women represented for him. this is where reducing the AAPI community's humanity ends up.

tying this all back to danger days. we can see where it drew from japanese art and television, but gerard took it too far and ended up dehumanizing asians. and we see this everywhere, in the majority of fandoms, as well as in non fandom interactions. and it needs to fucking stop. because all it does is dehumanize us, and dehumanizing us only causes more violence towards us. it unconsciously feeds into stereotypes, it's the literal definition of orientalism, and it's not okay.

as an aside- i see this also happening with the reduction of chinese people to being the same as the chinese government, which also carries the real world consequences and violence from sinophobia. whether negative stereotypes or ones that seem positive on the surface, reducing a people to one aspect of their country is never acceptable.
