The Jungle - 12th Episode Review

We are already at the 12th episode of this series. This entire episode was a very long flashback and the next one will probably also be part of it. I feel like they should have shown it before. I guess we only got it now because all the others guys already have their significant others and it was time to really care about Pine and his tragic love story with August. It was hinted since the first episode but they kept us in the dark to save it until now. Anyway let’s review all of that.

At the beginning of this episode we find Pine who is celebrating with friends and he sees August for the first time at the RV before it became the real RV. August is leaving the place with a bottle and Pine follows her to the roof. She is seen to be on the roof ledge without her shoes so it kinds of imply that she could jump at any moment. It's already too messy and we are just at the beginning of this episode. Pine gets the same idea and tries to reason August to prevent her from jumping. I will sound like I’m always complaining but I already don't like her. Pine is trying to be nice and helpful but she seems quite rude and not very friendly. It’s never explained why she is on the ledge because on the next scene they are now drinking together at the bar and we learn he got fired from his job. They get into a deep conversation about how people judge you from superficial things such as age, education and gender. Pine is more optimistic than her and feels his next job will be a better one where he can show off his skills. She congratulates him. We get to learn also that she does what she wants and doesn't tolerate a lot of thing. After this short conversation, they kiss. I don’t know, it feels off. Pine was giving her soft gentle eyes (king of dove-eyed) so I guess it was a way of conveying his interest. They both go to the Jungle room to have passionate intercourse. Then in the morning she is leaving him and giving him money for the room and the condom. She really sees him as a one-night stand while he got really serious fast. I kinda feel bad for him. He was a naive boy, back then. Oh, she forgot her necklace. How convenient for the story. Pine’s look at this end of this scene says that maybe he is not that naive. I have mixed feelings.

What I find funny is that Hunter was already working there. XD Does this guy have any other activities outside of this bar? What's his deal? Does he live in the bar? Is his room next to the Jungle room? I’m more fascinated by him than anyone else. I want his backstory! Well, Pine is still looking for August and he is questioning Hunter to get more info. He also have his first encounter with Phethai who mocks him because he can’t find August. They started their relationship off on the wrong foot. Phethai comes of as a bit cocky. The next day, Pine is starting his new job and discovers that Phethai is an actor because his face is on a poster. At the same time, Hack is also watching the same poster. This is the first encounter with Hack. They don't like Pethai very much. They mostly sound extremely jealous to be honest but why not. Pine has a small conversation with Hack and we learn that he is an application developer. I never thought it would be his job. In the first episode, I thought he was in the mob. I was so far away from the truth. They also meet narcoleptic Nathee (this guy in his day version is always sleeping). They all go in the same elevator because all of them are working at the same company. The world is too small.

At that point I didn’t think that this episode would be a flashback and I hoped that we could finish it quickly so we go back to my girl Florence. I was waiting for the consequences of saying Nathee was her boyfriend and the proposition of Posh but I never get what I want in this series. Anyways, Pine arrives at his desk and it has a message on it "burden", "Some task". Turns out it was a joke from his coworkers and he gets a welcome from the all department. After that he will meet all the big shots from the company. On the way to the meeting, his new coworkers are already gossiping about “the witch” which is someone they don't like and we know already, thanks to the preview that it's August. I'm not a fan of gossiping at work but really she gave that impression when we first met her at the bar. It is not very surprising that her employees don’t really like her and are talking behind her back. She is indeed not the nicest person. Pine meest Kanta the boss of this company and he looks like a jerk already (He gives off major villain vibes). Surprise! Of course, August is here. Pine and her look at each other for a very long time. It’s awkward. Pine seems happy but she is not in the same mood. I feel August is a copy-paste of Sam from Gap the series. Pine proposes something to solve the problem of their new project and he uses her own words to convince them, so she can't really refuses. After the meeting, he meets her in the stairs and tries to engage the conversation, but she is not into it and leaves quickly. Pine is not ready to understand that she is not interested because he himself is into her.

We get the famous milk product placement with Nathee and Hack who tries to grab the same bottle but ends up choosing a different one. I have to admit sometimes I just want to buy it to see how it tastes but I'm sure I would be disappointed because it's just regular fruity milk and I don't even like milk. Again, the coworkers are gossiping about August. Pine defends her because he has a crush. He kinda looks cute being in love. He looks better than his present version. I don’t really like Off that much but he is kinda good at giving this soft sweet face that makes you think he is in love. I don’t know if I explain it propely. You know what I mean? Hack and Nathee are already suspicious about Pine and August because of the way Pine acts. Granted he is not very subtle. At the same time, August is painting at work and Kanta interrogates her about Pine. He warns her not to get involved again with him. He wants no troubles at work but she reminds him he shouldn't ask her that when he also got something with his secretary. Well, so they are both players. Good for them! Hack and Pine are again at the RV (which is not yet the RV, but you know). How can they go out every night? Are they not tired at work? Hunter is still serving drinks and Pine notices August is also here. He goes after her to give her necklace back. Pine would like to do it again with her but she doesn’t want because now they are working at the same place. He tries to convince her but it's not working and she leaves again. She is always leaving him. Get the message!

Back at work, everyone is trying to reach Pine for the project but he is not answering. This could be a problem because the client is already here. Turns out, Pine was already in the meeting room and ready to present the project. It was a success and they are again drinking at a bar (How many times now?). Those guys must have a strong liver. They discuss their work but in the next day when Pine arrives at his department, he discovers that a rival company launched his project. Someone uploaded it on the dark web xD. My gosh, it sounds so stupid. It's just an app. Why make it so serious? Who would be stupid enough to upload that on the dark web but make it easy to track it down. It would have made more sense, he someones just gave away or sold the data but no, let’s use the dark web! We don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to know that Pine will be the first suspect. They have a meeting to find who is the culprit. It was certain that they would put the blame on Pine. Kanta insists a lot so I think he is the one who did it. Pine gets angry and of course he got fired. Hack and Pine met August while they are leaving the building. She understands his anger because she also feel that it's weird and tells him to wait until Kanta's anger reduce. Pine wants to see August again but it’s still a no for her. The next scene is again at the bar (how many times have we been there in this episode?) where Pine is being drunk. Hack wants to know when he met August because Pine admitted he loves her. Nathee is also here. They don't remember that he was working at the same company. He helps them discover the truth. It takes ages just to say that it was the head of the developers department. I forgot about him but it’s true that he was suspicious at the meeting. When he understand that they discovered he was involves, he runs and they go after him.

Outside of the building, Phethai has finished his concert and he is going to his car. The head of the department takes a taxi and Nathee, Hack and Pine gets into Phethai’s car. He never asked anything and those three used him as a taxi driver to follow the guy. I'm still sure Kanta is behind all of this and used the head of the department. The four Jungle men reached their destination which is a creepy warehouse. Three men are waiting for the head of the department and we could say they are his reinforcement. They will have to fight! I found that funny that Nathee, Hack, Phethai and Pine would be good at fighting. It makes no sense since they are not real fighter and their job don’t really have anything related to fighting. For the first time I was surprised because we saw that they indeed weren’t all that good. Hack is particularly terrible. Pine is running after the head of the department who fled the fight. Nathee is actually good at fighting because he helps Hack. We also get to see the twins who are here too playing with knifes for no reason.. Nanfah shows off by throwing his blade in the leg of the head of the department, slowing him down. Are they here to steal something? I mean, why are they in this warehouse? Phethai stops the head of the department before he leaves and Pine misses the car with the real culprit inside. Now, all the Jungle are reunited at the same place and that’s the end of the episode.

So this was the origin story of the Jungle and it was bad. Sorry I'm not convinced. Why would all these guys gets united and become a group of playboys after that? This is not making any sense at all. Does anyone have a good explanation? It was so anticlimactic. I expected more from their origin story. We still don’t know why they get tied up with Hunter and the RV. Why re brand the bar to become the RV? How is it tied to August? I can’t believe they became friends like this. It leaves us with more questions than answers.

While watching the first time I just remember thinking about how things seemed from her perspective and the fact that she lost both of her brothers in ways that would stay unclear for the rest of her life (even though Louis was still alive technically). Grace never got any real closure.

And she really did love him and was so accepting (the fist time Louis comes back home w different eye colour and she makes a comment that this is the 'better him' when he looks embarrassed just warms my heart). I don't know if i even blame anyone for the way things happened between them, louis did things that were very hurtful but he was also hurting so badly that he couldn't completely see that. Lestat never had a family that he wanted to stay close with after his turning (the thing w gabrielle is a different situation than this imo) so his advice wasn't really informed or useful.

And I love your detailed breakdowns of scenes it's definitely not too much!

I love your point about the way Grace never gets closure for losing either one of her brothers, anon. It really feels like it goes back to that overall theme of the first two seasons of memory being a monster, but time being a gift. Grace never gets the time Louis does, and in so many ways, Louis steals himself away from her more than anyone else does. She's the one left standing in the wreckage of the de Pointe du Lac family, she's the one who has to bury them all, even if Louis' not dead (or well, isn't dead in a lasting way), and the pain that comes with that is I think real for both of them.

I’ve started thinking about him more often lately, he’s just such a sweet and over the top performance of a character type he’s obsessed with <3

He’s a talented sword fighter who wants more than anything to win the favor of his lady comrade Florence, even if it means lessening his skills in order to highlight hers more. Some people assume he’s an amateur as Florence always defeats him, but he is still a formidable fighter in his own right and will most likely take down anyone else that takes him on

He does everything with a flourish and an enthusiastic demeanor. Even just saying his own name is done to make an impact. He’ll most likely be one of the louder personalities in any room you put him in

He wants the love and glory that comes with being a hero. He wants others to look at him and go, “thank goodness YOU are here! We need you!” and luckily he does get that from some people (just not the ones he really needs it from)

He wears his heart on his sleeve and even his most elaborate performances can’t hide his feelings, you can pretty much read him like a book. He’s usually a very confident individual, but there are definitely times where he’s at his lowest and can’t hide it

Cheerful Oblivion

I met a woman in a club once. Years ago. Can’t get her out of my head. If I didn’t still have the napkin with her number on it… Well. Would’ve been easy to assume I dreamed the whole thing up.

It was a miserable night to be out. Rain was coming down in buckets, flooding the streets. Could almost hear it over the music, pelting the roof. But there she was. Filling the entire doorway. No coat. No umbrella. Nothing but a black tank top and jeans that looked too tight to be comfortable. Soaked to the bone, dripping wet, faded blue-raspberry-bright hair plastered to her neck. She looked like she’d dragged herself straight out of the ocean. In hindsight, maybe she had.

********** England is only ever gray or green. The girls glitter, Striding glorious and coatless in the rain. I remember falling through these streets, Somewhat out of place, if not for the drunkenness… It makes my chest hurt to think of it, Not of regret, but of missing that… …cheerful oblivion… **********

I remember the way she stood there, caught under spotlight rays of blue and green, the rain on her face sparkling like diamonds… She looked like an angel. Could’ve been. Probably wasn’t. More than likely…something else.

She didn't belong there. In the club. I don’t mean that in a judgmental way. Maybe philosophical. She didn't really seem like she belonged anywhere. But I could see it in her eyes, almost fluorescent blue under the lights. To her, it didn’t matter where she belonged. What mattered was where she wanted to be. And she wanted to be there. In that club. On that night.

I’d never been afraid of being noticed by a beautiful woman. I craved it. Don’t we all? This was different. She was different. Never felt my blood run colder than the second our eyes locked. It felt like being hunted.

She flowed through the crowd like water, parting the proverbial sea, leaving a wake of awestruck stares. If she knew she was the center of attention, she didn’t care. She was a full head taller than anyone else, a titan amongst mere mortals. Muscles rippled when she moved. Wet skin shimmered. I tried not to stare, I really did. Couldn’t help myself. I could’ve watched her for days.

She swept ashore at the bar, smelling like petrichor and oil slicks. Ordered a drink. Smiled down at me, sitting so small a million miles beneath her. There was nothing human about that razor-sharp flash of teeth.

She asked if I wanted another drink. Hadn’t realized I’d finished the one in my hand. I nodded. Couldn’t find my voice. Tab’s on me, she’d said. Not here for long, least I can do. After tonight, you’ll never see me again.

I asked her where she was from. She laughed, a harsh bark of a thing that ripped out of her throat like it hurt. Nowhere. I asked for her name. She didn’t answer. But that animal grin flashed back, a bright white scar across her face. For no reason, I thought about moths. And flames.

We stopped talking. Kept drinking. Started dancing. God, the way she moved. Like a machine. Like a predator. Like a ballerina. Equal parts precision, power, beauty.

I couldn’t keep up. She didn’t seem to care. I was a prop. A plaything. An entertaining little toy, something to keep her distracted. From what, I didn’t know. But it didn’t matter. It felt like an honor.

Never did call that number. Not sure she’d really wanted me to. Probably for the best. I get the feeling that if we’d been in that club alone together… She would’ve eaten me alive.

And I think I would've let her.
