Ok so, following with my little thoughts that pop-up as I watch the new season.

Hearing Ryuji speak about his motivation (or lack of now) reminded me what I thought about the anime once, this whole story is about desire and love, mourning, and overcoming said grief but also about the consequences (neutral term)/outcome of not getting over that phase.

What happen when you love/desire something or someone so much, and that person died or that thing ends, what if it breaks? You're going to mourn them, you're going to felt empty and lost and sad, angry, desperate. And you either make peace with that fact, because the lost of a loved one or a loved thing never gets away, and continue with your life, or you succumb to the hurt and take it out on everyone else.

I think this season is one of the best portrayals of my vision about the story, but if you look at every arc, every season is about desiring, loving, and losing, and mourning.

To put some examples:

Season 1:

The Okumuras, Shura AND Kuro lost Shiro, they are left alone in a big world full of threats, people that hate them for existing. They lost the person that loved them the most above everything else, that gave them a home, a hand, a reason to keep going against the injustice of a world that wasn't kind with them.

And what do they do? They grief, and they mourn, they lash against others (the people that say that Shiro was dead, Satan, Rin) or drown themselves in vices (alcohol, work), because they are lost and don't know what else to do.

But they overcome it, not entirely because that's imposible, you never get over the lost of a figure so important in your life. Rin make friends, Yukio get closer to his brother and Shura, Kuro as well as Shura find a new family and a reason to live.

Season 2:

We get to Ryuji, Koneko, and Shima's journey. They lost their home, their families, their purpose in life, and their childhood.

Ryuji and Koneko works mourn and grief by putting all their efforts into becoming better, as well as they blame Satan because they didn't know the full extent of problems in their families. Koneko devoted himself to the family who open its arms to him, too.

Shima is the one who lost his most of childhood, but his case is different because he did NOT chose to leave it behind, his own family was the one who expected him to throw it away and focusing on becoming a better wielder of the black flames, to devoted his life to a cause he didn't care. He lost his family, one that he couldn't even remember, and that every expected that he would want to make proud and take revenge for them, but how could him when he didn't even feel a connection with them? Instead, he decided to ran away from all that by becoming a spy, refusing to devote to anything and anyone but his own ambitions. But did he even have one to begin with? Does he knows if his ambition is to live? Is his purpose in life living the way he wants? Constantly fighting against the people that loved him because he couldn't do what they wanted?

(Just to clarify, I don't think Shima has any obligation to do what his family or friends want, I'm speaking from my own experience struggling to care about the things my family cared because we are just that different).

They didn't overcome it, but they started the path to do so between the end of that season and the start of the new one.

I don't want to put more examples (though I have a lot more) because we haven't reached that point into the anime yet, but I'm sure manga readers that are at date can think a few more if I mention Yuri, Satan, Shiro, Lucifer, Mephisto, etc.

Lyra, my beloved cat of 13 years, passed away this year on Father's Day. She's been by my side through very difficult times and was my little rock of steady and unrelenting love. I struggled a lot drawing this, and struggled a lot posting it, but I know I would've wanted to read a comic like this that validated my grief for her when I lost her.
