Elden Ring Headcanon: Messmer Edition

Spoilers below, these headcanons are based on item descriptions, and thanks to some helpful people in the discord I'm in for clarifying some lore that completely flew over my head.

Ok, so, just as a disclaimer: I do not care who you ship Messmer with, or how you view him, the following headcanon is just my interpretation, that does not mean that everyone should share said interpretation. If you do, awesome! if not, just continue on with your day, the following headcanon has no bearing on your enjoyment of the character, the game, or what you do to express your love of Elden Ring.

Messmer seems very aromantic coded to me. He has friends among the knights that serve him, cared about them to the point he listened to them when they wanted knowledge preserved, and mourned the loss of a friend when two of knights rebelled against him because of Messmer's serpentine nature. He also has a lot of love for his family, with how he was an older brother figure to Radahn and had a brotherly bond with Gaius, not to mention how he's turned himself into a symbol of fear and uses his fire (which he has tried to get rid of multiple times) all on his mother's orders.

Yet he has no interest in romantic relationships (R.I.P Rellana), and I just, think it'd be neat if I headcanon him as aromantic (Note: that does not mean he's also asexual, I am specifically focusing on aromanticism here) based on the fact that he cares a lot about his knights and his family, but had no interest in Rellana in a romantic way.

Plus, its all in good fun, and aromantic rep is sorely lacking in media, so what's stopping me from reading certain characters as being aro-coded? Fandom often interpret characters as gay, bi, trans and so on for their headcanons and fanfics, so what does it matter if I pick a character to write as being aromantic?

This is, after all, a hobby, its for fun, and if you personally don't agree with this, that's ok. Whatever ideas you have, and whatever ideas I have can coexist in the same fandom space.

Now, here's a headcanon that's a lot less...controversial.

Messmer sees via his serpents, his remainnig eye, as seen in his phase two transition, is a glass one, a prosthetic eye. He probably can't see out of it. Granted, there is a lot of blodd on his fingers after removing it, so maybe it is a magical functioning eye or something, but it could go either way. But given that when we enter his boss room for the first time, we see one of his snake friends before we see him, so I feel like that opening cutscene hints at the fact that he uses his snakes to see.

I like Messmer, he's very friend-shaped.

I just think he's neat.

Edit: The lengthy disclaimer at the start of this post is just me covering my bases, I've gotten guilt-tripped and generally felt unwelcome in a couple of other fandoms for simply having an aromantic spectrum headcanon, or you know, being an asexual fan of a game and its characters when most of the player base is clearly not asexual. (A different game, not Elden Ring, the elden ring community has been very accepting, but the Doubt Still Remains because of my previous experiences)

You poked at one of the little red bottles on Strade's desk as he worked on something new for his website, recognising the shape, colour scheme and font choice almost instantly from your days of partying with the GSA committee in college. You couldn't resist a little scoff as you looked up at him, raising a brow.

"Aren't you a little old for poppers?"

Distracted from his work (albeit just momentarily), Strade looked up with a surprised look on his face, letting out a huffed laugh as he turned his attention from the computer and onto you.

"You know what poppers are?" He asked, raising a brow. "That's a surprise. I figured that you wouldn't...not many know about them anymore. Not without looking it up, at least."

"Come on, I'm not an idiot," You replied, rolling your eyes as you leaned against the side of the desk, peering at the silent video auto-playing on his screen, as grisly as ever. No doubt you'd have to get on an edit for it, soon, and distribute it to his growing audience. The longer you did it, the more you didn’t mind doing it. "And, I mean, I had a lot of gay friends in college, too. It's, like, super trendy now, way more than it used to be."

"Hah, nice to hear that it's still a thing with the younger generations then." He chuckled, resting his arm on the desk and letting his cheek loll down lazily against his fist. "I'm surprised a pretty, young lady like yourself knows all about them, though" Strade then leaned forward and picked up one of the bottles, tapping the top of it playfully. "Usually this kind of thing would be reserved for fags like me."

You rolled your eyes again when he called you a 'young lady' (though the age difference between you was becoming less of an issue the more times he spoke of it, and only caused more and more of a stirring in your core) before sitting up on the desk top and spreading your legs a little, your shorts riding up your thighs and clinging tight.

Oh yeah?" You tilted your head, your tone a little teasing. "Wanna share any fun stories?"

Strade's eyes flitted from the little bottle and back to you, spanning up your spread thighs (lingering on the tight gusset for maybe a second too long to be innocent) and to your face, his own smirking and smug. 

"You tell me yours, I'll tell you mine." 

"Well, I've had a lot of experiences," You replied with a casual shrug, as he rolled his chair in front of you and placed his hands on either side of your hips, his knees pressing up against your calves, pinning you in place. You found that you didn’t mind it so much, though. "You're going to have to be more specific."

"Hmmm..." He hummed, as if deep in thought, and his gaze flickered from your eyes, down to your mouth, then to your chest (you weren't wearing a bra either and you were sure your top was a little too small and clinging for you) as he thought about your answer. "Well...tell me anything you think I'd be surprised by." His gaze came up again to meet yours, a knowing smile on his lips. "Something you've never told anyone."

"Hm...I've had a threesome?" You suggested, resting your palms behind you as you leaned back on the desk, smiling coyly.

"A threesome?" He repeated with a slightly impressed look. "With a guy and a girl, or two guys...or two girls?" 

"Two guys," You replied with a little titter, knowing why he was asking about the latter (like the dirty old man he was). "My housemate is-" You hesitated, wondering how you should speak about your past life…you probably should have been more upset about considering it a past life, but you were far from sorrow at this point. "Well...he was bi and had a long-term boyfriend, but he wanted to...you know, get a girl involved. Remember what he was missing, or some shit." 

"Mmm, I bet," He hummed again, moving his hands up and down your calves. You couldn’t remember the last time you shaved your legs, but Strade never made you feel bad about that. "...And, what, you decided to volunteer yourself as tribute?" He continued with a grin. "Kind of slutty, kind of hot, fraulein. Did you have fun?"

You laughed at the idea of 'volunteering yourself' for such a situation, but shrugged your shoulders again, taking in a slow breath as his hands roamed up your hips and to the waistband of your shorts, feeling where they dug into you and marked your skin with pink indentations. 

"Yeah, it was a lot of fun." You nodded, letting out a soft sigh as he eased his hands past the waistband of your shorts and took a firm grip on your hips, calloused skin on skin. "We got high on Rush," You nodded back to the little red and yellow bottles. "And...yeah, had a good time."

"Right..." His smirk curved into a salacious grin as his hands slid from your hips and round to your ass, pulling you further up the desk and closer to him, your legs spreading completely on either side of the computer chair to give him room to slot between. You should have felt more vulnerable…you should have. "And why do you think they were interested in you, of all people?"

"I-I don't know..." You mumbled, taking in an unsteady breath as he continued to grope and knead at your flesh and leaned in closer between your spread legs. "Close proximity, maybe…I was down for whatever, too, that was probably pretty convincing, too..."

"Hmph...you know," He tilted his head, giving your ass another firm grope. "Maybe the reason you were pulled into that threesome was because you're so... boyish, you know?"

His words were playful for the time being, his tone more teasing than anything else, but his teasing nature did nothing to stop him as he pulled your shorts past your knees and sat up in his seat to pull you closer and place a whisper of a kiss on your neck.

"You know…if I wasn’t looking at you really closely, I could almost be fooled into thinking you were a boy. Maybe that’s what you should be, instead…you’re a little too filthy to be a girl, after all."

You let out an unsteady breath as he kissed and licked and nipped at your neck, pressing your thighs together to stop yourself from trembling as he tossed your shorts to the side.

His kisses and nips became more and more drawn out and teasing as he dragged his thick tongue against your bare neck, stimulating each nerve and making you shiver and tremble and tighten up against him. Bi4bi m/f, bi woman x straight man, bi woman x lesbian etc. I love to see bi rep and her efforts to make bi characters visible are great, I respected her for it and I found out last season, she's also a 911 fan! A Buck fan! Cool! She ships B*ddi3 but usually idc ship and let ship, I didn't think she was a Bucktommy hater.

So. Yeah. I'm out of there, I just can't look at her the same anymore, not to be parasocial or whatever but she always seemed cool, I liked her, I wanted to support her work, I HAVE supported her work personally and as someone who works as a bookseller, I've pointed people to her books and sold them.

But now I just have a bad taste in my mouth. There has been SO much hate towards Tommy, Bucktommy, and worse, the real people who ship them, Lou, and even Oliver over the last few months, because it's constantly being stirred up by this kind of B*ddi3 shipper. I would feel sorry for them for how desperate and bitter they are if not for the fact that I simply cannot stand them anymore. They are miserable and determined to make Bucktommy shippers miserable, too.

I just don't get why people can't stay in their fandom lane and leave others alone?? Like, getting mad that Buck's ESTABLISHED BOYFRIEND and E**ie's FRIEND, WHO HE LIKES, was in one (1) scene, when it narratively made sense for him to be there to remind the ga of him, is pathetic. Tommy came to support E at the virtual birthday party of his estranged teenager, and make a heavy scene lighter and you're acting like he's some kind of monster. I can't even, I'm done!

I hope all the bestie boos will start to leave the fandom soon, when Tommy sticks around, because tbh they only care about one thing that's never going to happen and they don't even seem to have fun on their side of the "ship war". They're too busy being nasty all the time, can't talk about their ship without dragging ours down.

Anyway this rant is becoming more generalized than what I planned to say about that person and has already gotten sooo long, so I'm just going to post it to throw all my anger and frustration out there with it and then bury it with happy Bucktommy posts!! If any Bucktommy fan for some reason actually reads this 1. Oof. Sorry! 2. I 💙 you, Bucktommy fans are the best and I'm so glad to be in this fandom despite everything!!

A/N: Now, I know that Gareth would probably never be like that, but sometimes it's the person you least expect. The best thing about Eddie's sexuality not being decided is that we can make it whatever we want to be, whether it's gay Eddie, bisexual Eddie, Pansexual Eddie, transfem!Eddie, trans male Eddie, asexual Eddie, aromantic Eddie, non binary Eddie and it would all still be equally queer. I appreciate every queer Eddie headcanon, but most particularly, I'm appreciating bi Eddie today on the 25th anniversary of the bi flag being created.

Gareth was his best friend in the world, but the way he was looking at him was hard to describe because he always scowled. Eddie sighed and rolled his eyes.

"What?" Eddie asked.

"You're bisexual?" Gareth scoffed.

"Yes, that's what I just said," Eddie said. "Is there a problem?"

"Man, that's not a real thing," Gareth said softly.

"Pardon?" Eddie asked.

"You're just confused. You've gotten all shook up lately, which is understandable. It's perfectly fine to question yourself. Either you're just confused about how you're feeling or you're trying to deny the fact that you're gay," Gareth said.

"So, it has to be one or the other? It can't be both?" Eddie scowled.

"It's just bullshit that people made up to experiment with people like us," he replied.

"So, you've one bad experience with a guy, and you've decided that my sexuality doesn't exist?! Tell me how the fuck that makes sense!" Eddie yelled.

"Because it doesn't exist! I'm starting to wonder if you just came here to fuck with me and I thought you of all people would never do that!" Gareth hissed.

"Bisexual people exist, Gareth!" Eddie exclaimed. "David Bowie for one. Explain that! I'm sure there are other people, but I can't think of any right now!"

He thought of Steve, the reason he realized he was bisexual in the first place. He wasn't going to out Steve, though.

"Man, fuck off!" Gareth yelled.

"You know, I came here because I thought that you of all people would understand and that you would get what it's like to be different. Man, you're just as hateful and judgemental as the homophobes out in the world, except it's a thousand times worse because you're being hateful towards your own kind. I'm bisexual and I'm just as queer as you are. People like us we are held to a higher standard to be more understanding and sympathetic because we know what it's like to be hated for who we are. But to turn around and spew the same hatred and misunderstanding towards your fellow comrade. . .it's fucked up," Eddie said. "You broke my heart, man. Call me when you get your head out of your ass."

He stormed out of Gareth's house and into the pouring rain. He let it wash over him for a moment before climbing into his van and driving off. Eddie wasn't sure where he was going, but he was driving for a while when he realized he was heading towards Steve’s house. He's spending time with Robin. It was their designated day to hang out, Eddie assumed it was to talk about their crushes. Eddie scowled as he thought about the guy that Steve had been talking about, who honestly sounded a lot like Eddie. He shook his head. No, it wasn't just Steve he needed to see. It was Robin, too. He pulled into Steve’s driveway and walked up to the door. He paused for a moment before knocking on the door. A moment later, the door opened, and Steve stood there.

"Eddie - "

To his embarrassment, Eddie burst into tears at the sight of him and threw himself into his arms.

"I thought he would understand," Eddie sobbed into his neck.

Steve pulled him inside, closing the door and holding him tightly.

"Eddie? What's wrong?" Steve asked.

"I'm and he - I just -," Eddie cried incoherently.

"Okay, how about you go upstairs and take off those wet clothes. I'll set some clothes outside the door, then you can come down and talk about it? Okay?" Steve said.

"Okay," Eddie said.

"I'll make hot cocoa!" Robin exclaimed from the doorway.

"With whipped cream and - ?" Eddie started to ask.

"Cinnamon!" Robin and Steve exclaimed.

Eddie smiled and went upstairs to the bathroom. A moment later, he came down wearing Steve’s clothes and toweling his hair off. He plopped down on the couch in the living room where Robin and Steve were waiting for him with mugs of hot cocoa. A box of tissues was placed on the coffee table. Eddie plopped down in the empty space between Robin and Steve. He assumed that spot was for him. He took a sip of hot chocolate and sat quietly for a minute, sniffling.

"I went to see Gareth to tell him because I figured that he would understand. That he would get it," Eddie said softly.

He had been hanging out with Robin and Steve so much that they started to get to know his friends, too. They both knew about Gareth and Jeff. God, he should have gone to Jeff. He couldn't, though, because he went out of town to visit family for the holidays.

"Tell him what?" Robin asked.

"Oh, right, you don't know because I haven't told you because I wanted to tell Gareth first," Eddie said, jumping up to start pacing. "You know, just because I realized later in life doesn't mean that I'm any less - ugh! I hate him."

"You're going to have to start clueing us in," Steve said.

"I'm real, right? I exist?" Eddie asked.

"As far as I know, you're not a figment of our imagination even though it does feel like that sometimes," Robin joked.

"Very funny, Robin," Eddie said, rolling his eyes, but he was smiling.

"What is this about, Eddie?" Steve asked.

"Recently, I've discovered something about myself that I didn't realize was always there," Eddie said and paused. "I'm bisexual."

"That's great!" Steve and Robin exclaimed.

"Yeah, I wish Gareth thought so. He apparently hates bisexuals," Eddie scowled.

"But he's gay," Steve said with wide eyes.

"How can he hate someone like him?!" Robin shrieked.

"Well, according to him bisexuality is something that people made up to experiment with gays and lesbians," Eddie said, rolling his eyes.

"That doesn't even make sense!" Robin shrieked.

"How can other queer people hate other queer people for their sexuality?!" Steve exclaimed.

"It's like - it's like - I don't know what it's like!" Robin exclaimed.

"This feels like a really fucked up math problem," Steve said and Robin scoffed in agreement.

Eddie squeezed their knees, laughing.

"I'm glad you guys are not on the same page as him," Eddie said.

"Well, it would be even weirder for me," Steve said, and Eddie laughed.

Eddie took a sip of his hot chocolate and grinned, not realizing that whipped cream was on his upper lip. Steve laughed.

"You've got something on your lip," he said.

Eddie started wiping in the wrong spot, and Steve laughed again.

"You missed. You know, I really want to get it for you but I don't want to use my hands. I figured that might be in poor taste considering your situation," Steve said.

"What about that huge nerd you have a crush on?" Eddie asked with wide eyes, and Robin laughed.

"Eddie," Steve grinned.

"Yeah?"

"You're the nerd," Steve said.

"Uh, well, then go for it, big boy," Eddie said. "Because you know, you're the reason that I realized I am bisexual."

Steve smiled at him and leaned forward to kiss him softly. He darted his tongue out and swiped the whipped cream off his lip. He pulled back, looking at Eddie fondly. Eddie set his cup down and threw himself into Steve’s arms. He snuggled into his side and buried his face into Steve’s neck.

"Perfect," he sighed. "I just wish - "

"I know, baby," Steve said and kissed his forehead.

Eddie grinned when he felt Robin burrow into his side.

"Do you want me to kick his ass?" Robin asked.

"Nah, let's just enjoy this moment," Eddie said.

"You know, you're not just important to me because you're important to Steve. You're my best friend too, Eddie," Robin said.

"Right back at ya," Eddie replied.

"What about that huge nerd you have a crush on?" Robin asked in a deep mocking tone, her body shaking with laughter.

"Stop it," Eddie blushed as he laughed.

"Eddie," she continued. "You're the nerd. Oh my God! I was glad I was here for that!"

"Fuck off!" Eddie giggled and they all laughed.

After that, Eddie spent most of his time with Robin and Steve as well as the other members of the party. He tried to hang out with Jeff and Frank, but it was hard to do it with Gareth around. Eddie didn't immediately start walking out when he was around. He did wait for an apology, but it never came, and it got harder to be around him. Jeff and Frank noticed immediately, especially when Eddie canceled Hellfire. It was Jeff who showed up at his door.

"Okay, what's going on between you and Gareth?" Jeff asked as soon as he sat down.

"I don't really want to talk about it, man," Eddie said, picking at a piece of thread on his pants.

"Something is going on, and Gareth refuses to talk about it. He scoffs and gets all defensive like he's hurt about something," Jeff said.

"I didn't fucking do anything wrong!" Eddie snapped, his eyes filling with tears.

"I'm not saying you did, but both of you are acting hurt by something that happened," Jeff said. "What happened?"

Eddie jumped up and started pacing. He stopped and turned away from Jeff. He wanted to tell Jeff, but he was afraid that he would lose him just like he lost Gareth. They're two different people, and Robin had accepted him immediately, so maybe Jeff will be different. Eddie turned around, crossing his arms.

"I'm bisexual," Eddie said.

Jeff stared at him before he slapped his knees.

"That's fucking fantastic. I'm glad you finally figured it out," Jeff said.

"Wait. What?" Eddie asked, blinking.

"Come on, I knew as soon as you started bringing Steve Harrington around," he said with a knowing grin. "It is Steve, right?"

"Yes," Eddie blushed.

"Okay, so what? Is it because Gareth has some sort of problem with Steve?" Jeff asked. "He's been making digs at him. Frank and I have been telling him to stop because we actually like Steve and Robin."

"He's got a problem with bisexuality," Eddie said stiffly. "He doesn't believe that being bisexual is a thing. He thinks it's an excuse to hide my 'real' sexuality."

"He actually said that to you?!" Jeff scowled.

"Yes," Eddie said bitterly.

"Oh, that asshole," he said. "I'm going to kill him."

Jeff jumped up and pulled Eddie into a hug, squeezing him tightly.

"I love you, man," Eddie said.

"I love you, too," Jeff said and pulled back. "Just give him some time. He'll come around. He has to, especially when Frank and I give him the cold shoulder."

"You don't have to do that," Eddie said.

"We support our friends," Jeff said. "We're in the same boat, just in different seats."

Eventually, Gareth did come around, and it was probably thanks to Dustin's meddling. He had been complaining a lot about how Hellfire had been disbanded and how no one would tell him what Gareth did. Finally, Dustin had grown desperate. He radioed Eddie, screeching about a code red and to meet him in the drama room. It was early in the morning when Eddie fell out of bed and started to quickly pull on his clothes. He looked down and saw that he had accidentally pulled on Steve’s polo. He looked over and found that Steve had pulled on one of his shirts. They didn't have time to worry about that and immediately left for the high school. They ran into the drama room, hearts racing.

"Wait! Goddamnit. . .no!" A voice called as the doors slammed behind them. "Fuck!"

Steve and Eddie reached out to open the doors, but they were locked. Suddenly, Gareth appeared over their shoulders.

"Yeah, I think they slid something through the handles. Assholes," Gareth muttered.

"Work out your goddamn issues!" Dustin screamed through the door.

"Henderson! You butthead!" Eddie yelled.

"Emerson," Steve glared at Gareth.

"Harrington," Gareth glared at him.

"Stop it," Eddie snapped and turned to Gareth. "We're stuck here so we might as well talk."

"I have nothing to say to you. You're clearly still in denial," Gareth snapped. "Thanks for turning Jeff and Frank against me."

Steve moved forward, but Eddie put a hand to his chest.

"That was all you, Gareth," Eddie said coldly.

"What do you want from me?" He asked. "I'm not going to change my mind."

"Because you're my best fucking friend and I love you! I want you to wake the hell up and realize that you're the one that's wrong here!" Eddie yelled at him. "I'm not going to apologize for being who I am!"

"So, I'm the one that's wrong. Why the hell can't it be you? Eddie Munson, king of the freaks, he can't admit when he's the one who's wrong?!" Gareth snapped.

"Yes, I can. I admitted I was wrong about Steve and Lucas, about jocks in particular. I've even been to Lucas's games," he said, and then he paused. "Do you remember when you came out to your family?"

"Yes," Gareth said, gritting his teeth.

"Do you remember when your grandmother said that you were going to burn in hell for being gay?" Eddie asked, and he nodded. "Well, you are your grandmother, and you're telling me that I'm going to burn in hell for being bisexual. That's what it feels like to me."

Gareth looked like he had been punched, and his mouth fell open. His eyes widened in realization, and it was like he was waking up from a twenty year coma.

"I wasn't - I didn't mean - I just - Oh! I am an asshole," Gareth said, and he burst into tears like a dam breaking. "I was just hurt! Because of that stupid jock using me and I took it out on you and Steve. I was wrong! I'm sorry!"

Eddie smiled sadly and pulled Gareth into a tight hug. He sniffled, and soon he was crying too. After crying until their tear ducts were dry, they pulled away from each other.

"I forgive you, man," Eddie said.

"Can you tell me again?" He asked.

"I'm Eddie Munson," he said, clapping Gareth on the shoulder. "And I'm bisexual."

"That's great, man," Gareth beamed. "I'm happy for you."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

Eddie turned around and pulled Steve to his side, slipping an arm around his waist.

"And this is my boyfriend, Steve Harrington," Eddie introduced, and Steve laughed. "Isn't he pretty?"

"Yeah, a little too pretty for you, Munson," Gareth teased.

"Fuck off," Eddie laughed and pushed him slightly.

Suddenly, the doors opened. Dustin, Mike, Will, Max, Lucas, and El came bursting into the room.

"Are you guys friends again?" Dustin asked.

"Yeah, you meddling litte shit," Eddie said, rolling his eyes fondly.

"Great! Does that mean that Hellfire is going to come back?" Mike asked.

"Oh, yes," Eddie grinned. "I'm going to have fun fucking with Gareth's character though."

"It's what I deserve," Gareth said solemnly.

"Steve. . . Eddie. . . Why are you wearing each other's clothes?" Dustin asked.

"Well, you woke us up early, and we got dressed in a hurry," Steve said.

"A little old to be having sleepovers, aren't you?" Mike asked, and Max rolled her eyes, looking up at the ceiling.

"Well, after I railed your babysitter into my mattress last night, he was too tired to go home," Eddie grinned wickedly.

"You're together!" Dustin and Mike exclaimed.

"Problems?" Eddie asked.

"Not as long as you never put the image of you fucking Steve in our heads again," Mike said and rolled his eyes. "I actually think this is awesome."

Eddie looked at the others, and they all shook their heads.

"Good."

And it really was.

Hajime:

He's Pan. He has an obsession with women but he gets just as down bad with men, or enbys. He likes people smarter than him. He preffers people smaller than him 'cause he gets too flustered with people bigger, but ohohoho, he LOVES heavier people.

Benkei:

I swear i can't decide. It switches every time. I think his sexuality is fluid and he's unlabelled. AroAce Spec tho, doesn't really get crushes.

Wakasa:

AroAce Spec, but he has TOO MUCH GAME. He pulls without trying. He is mostly uninterested in people and relationships. You have to be an EXTRAORDINARY person to catch his attention (I have this headcanon that he's lowkey into Shin but that's for another day). Once he falls, you are not getting rid of him.

Takeomi:

Probably fully Aro. His true love is money. If he got into a relationship it would be a VERY slow and robotic process, until he relaxes and is like... Huh... This is nice. Then a switch flips.

anyways one part is like: my sense for gay people is strong, i think i know which f1 drivers are gay and i am confident in my answers

but the other part is like: its wrong to speculate sexuality because if people havent come out then they either aren't ready to be out or aren't gay, but at the same time this generation is moving away from the construct of coming out so like... idk.

today the first part is stronger, though, so i want to share my speculations because everyone in the states only watches nascar and is a hick and i'm scared of them. they also do not like my italian accent :(

1. Max Verstappen

come on guys, any gay person could tell u he's probably bi. i mean he doesn't even try to hide it, u know? like there are compilations of him being fruity. and they are shockingly long.

he's mentioned using grindr, he's mentioned girls OR guys when talking about dating preferences, the whole thing with the freaking lei (i think thats how it is spelled, the hawaiian thing? the flower necklace?). the list goes on and on.

he's had girlfriends, and i'm pretty sure they weren't beards but i'm not sure. i'm leaning towards bi tho for this reason.

even if he isn't bi or gay or pan or whatever, he's at least incredibly comfortable with queerness and is probably a really cool dude. annoying when i'm watching the sunday races, but love him the rest of the time!

2. Lando Norris

lando is a bit more subtle with it (as are the other ppl in the list). emphasis on a bit, though.

i saw a post saying that if carlos and lando pulled up to the paddock holding hands and telling people they were dating they wouldn't be shocked. i agree with this statement entirely. as was stated, it takes a lot to get to that point, and we're at that point.

now i grew up a gay dude to a conservative family, and i know the little mannerisms that are like... a part of being gay? and i know what it looks like to hide them.

i do not know if this is the right way to say it or if it is politically correct, but i believe it to be true. gay men tend to have little mannerisms here and there that give us away a bit, and i think i've seen some of those in lando.

i don't think i will share them though, as i don't want to accidentally push harmful stereotypes or whatever. obviously not all gay men have gay mannerisms and it might be something lando is insecure about so i would rather not put them on blast.

this is probably going to be the shortest section (ha).

yuki mostly just makes my radar go off. i don't consume alphatauri content as much, but i know there was a thing with him and pierre that was just crazy last year and the year prior. don't know as much about it as i should haha.

but yeah. yuki just sends my radar into the astral plane (is that a thing? i am doubting myself). if he is not at least bisexual i will eat my own foot.

maybe that one moment between him and michael italiano has just gotten to me, i don't know. i trust in my instincts though.

I was looking at that new photo of John again this morning, and thinking about that quote 'cementing the Sugdens' back in the village... We've figured out he's Vic's brother and is more than likely meant for Aaron. It feels like they probably want him to stay longterm.

All this got me thinking of all the people they've brought in, say in the last 5 years or so. Often they get on of these photos, shot somewhere in the Dales to announce their arrival. They often already have, or end up with familial bonds to other characters. Others are more brought in as romantic links of course.

Anyway, I've put together all the ones I could think of that are now gone or on their way out soon. (Also, as a side note, quite a few of these characters have been gay. Or, in Luke's case maybe bi, I'm still unsure because I refused to watch the Posners.)

Some of these still confuse me to this day. The made a pretty big announcement about the recasting of Georgia Sharma, for her to only be in a handful of episodes. There are other headscratchers as well, like Chloe's dad, who died shortly after this promo photo was released. Not to mention that Chloe left during Laura Norton's maternity leave...

What was the point of young Oscar? Naomi's short stint? Victor's even shorter? Making Marcus Pierce's son?

Amit was another one that lasted waaay shorter than I thought, and now Nicky and Suni are leaving because the actors weren't happy with their material it would seem.

Meena, Paul and Tom were obviously brought in with the sole purpose of being villains with a timeline.

I think Jamie was a character they really wanted to keep longer, but he wanted out, just like Joe before him. They probably wanted Ellis to stay as well, but we all know what happened there...

(And I put Sandra in there, just because it was so horrible of them to bring her back in a story that would completely destroy Liv's relationship with her mum before her death, instead of healing it. Who thought of that gem?)

As for those who have stuck around, we have Mandy & Vinny, Charles, Wendy (why?), Mackenzie, Bear, Mary, Suzy, Gail, Claudette, Caleb, Ruby, Ella and Rose (for now). I'm not sure if Ella and Rose are meant to become permanent residents of the village or what they might have planned there...

I read that bit about Ryan calling Eddie heterosexual 🤔 Yeah well, sorry if someone is disappointed by my non-reaction, I still ship buddie and see Eddie as a closeted queer man.

But Buck doesn't see Eddie as queer, and I think that's the point here: he did come out to another man, one he thinks is straight. So that's the mindset of that conversation.

Also, about Eddie's queerness. I think calling him heterosexual makes sense, that's his "safe place to hide."

I know this fandom is in love with the repressed, married, closeted gay man-trope, and expects Eddie to spring out of that box eventually.

He’s described as very caring and loyal (yay!) which seems to always get him taken advantage of (damn!)

He’s portrayed (especially in ACOWAR) as someone we’re supposed to dislike when all his actions are perfectly reasonable

He’s literally retconned out of being white when it’s revealed Helion is his father instead of Beron. I’ve seen ppl get mad at “white-washed” fan art but it’s hard to expect much else when his original character description was straight red hair, amber eyes,  and “tan” skin (holy shit agAIN)

They live isolated in the mountains (away from civilization) and are described as “savage” and warlike, always raiding villages in the mountains and stealing women away from their homes…

X-Men '97 and the Gambit Ford F-150 Trailer Hitch Clutching

So I haven't watched all the episodes yet, but I wanted to address the stuff I've seen/heard about certain dudes in the "fandom" getting all upset about Gambit's crop top and how it made him seem gay or bi coded, even though in the entire episode he's classic Remy LeBeau from the original 90s series--not too interesting in helping out or doing anything other than what he wants to do, shamelessly flirting with Rogue, and busting everyone else's balls/possibly flirting with them too, but will still jump into the fight when it's time.

Oh, and Gambit was my favorite X-Men character growing up and I'm a cishet male, if that matters. Spoiler alert: It shouldn't.

If that's you, you clearly were too young in the 90s to remember the fashion of the day. The top photo and the ending basketball scene (a references to the comics as well), was soooo 80s/90s. Bishop's got a lime green tank top on and Cyclops' tank top is tucked into his shorts. The animators understood the assignment.

If anything, Remy (above) is rock-n-roll coded more than anything else. Just Google most 80s era rock bands that had songs about partying, sex, hot babes, etc. and you'll see big hair, eyeliner, bright colors, leather pants, jewelry, fishnets, fingerless gloves, and yes... crop tops. Maybe the 80s and 90s were "gay", IDK, but I remember most of my childhood clothes in the 80s and early 90s were some variation of a neon color as was every other kid's regardless of gender.

As mentioned above, he soooo badly wants in Rogue's pants, which possibly eliminates any gay coding, which only leave bi coding if a 90s crop top = being bisexual.

Who. Freakin'. Cares. Say this out loud with me. You can like, love, and enjoy a character without identifying with that character in any way, shape, or form (and that's probably a good thing for some characters). This can mean their sexuality, gender, ethnicity, religion, morality, or anything else about them. Yes, we can bring in the Punisher debate and how military and law enforcement appropriated the Punisher logo as their badge of honor and intimidation, and how they cherry-picked traits from that character to signal their toxic masculinity when Frank Castle is not meant to be a patron saint of law enforcement or the military. But it is also possible to just enjoy a character without making that character your identity. You can enjoy their characterization, storylines, or even something as simple as their costume, superpowers, or where they're from because you were born or grew up there too.

As mentioned above, Gambit was my favorite character growing up when I first got into X-Men, mostly thanks to this series, and he and I are very different. To me, Gambit was the cool, confident guy that I wasn't. He also wasn't Cyclops or Wolverine.

As a kid, most kids wanted to be Wolverine when playing X-Men on the playground because he had the claws and the healing factor. To us, he was OP which fit in with the whole childish argument of big, bigger, biggest, and finally infinity whatever... until someone busted out with the infinity times infinity argument. Also, there was no real internet and comics weren't readily accessible, so most of the knowledge at that time was from the show and limited comics one might've had. Plus, I think the whole Magneto pulls the adamantium from Wolverine's body storyline hadn't happened yet so yeah, that would've been a good game changer on the playground.

Anyway, outside of Batman, I was never a fan of the "popular" thing growing up and often preferred more underdog characters, teams, and things. Also, due to self-esteem issues I always felt less than, so while I liked Wolverine it was hard for him to be my favorite since he was everyone else's and I felt like I wasn't cool enough to like him. Cyclops on the other hand was the clean cut boy scout, which also didn't appeal to me because that was also something I didn't relate to. Outside of Beast and Morph, who got sidelined earlier in the series, that then left Gambit. (Note: Bishop wasn't a part of the main group and came later on.) But Gambit also seemed cool to me. He had a cool looking outfit, was agile and knew how to fight (I was into martial arts at the time as well), and could throw explosive cards. He definitely fit the "Rule of cool" in my child brain.

Lastly, and this goes back to point #4 above, it shouldn't matter what a character is like or how they identify. They're fictional and enjoying them as a medium should be fun. They are not you and you are not them, even if you have things in common. That said, I do think it's great when there's representation as well. I don't recall if this was in the OG series, though I seriously doubt it was, and I don't know about main Marvel canon, but I also think it's cool that Morph now has they/them pronouns as seen in the profile credits and Marvel wiki. I'm sure some people have missed this and I'm sure that'll be the next hot-button issue, but whether Gambit is gay, bi, straight, or whatever, he's still one of my favorites and it's why I grabbed this guy when it first came out.

I have more things to say about this first episode and my experience with the X-Men growing up, but I'll save that for other posts as this has gotten long enough already.

Representation in MoaH (& GoS)

I don't like to tag my works with a lot of the rep tags they normally would/could have. Personally, from publishing the first book in Word Walkers, my experience is that those tags are more often used to blacklist works and I don't think people should get the opportunity to pretend that queer people, BIPOC people, disabled people don't exist by flagging that. Also like. As a white person, I feel a little weird being like "Look at all my BIPOC characters!" It feels a little virtue signally to me. Telling good stories should just include diverse casts because the world is diverse. You know?

Further, in my experience, particular with Wattpad at the moment, I have a platform to give people the 101 to a lot of these concepts (in particular queer and disability rep, which are my communities) and change their minds that they would have otherwise missed if they'd stayed in their bubble. It does mean you probably won't see things like neopronouns in my works, but if I can change someone's mind about they/them being singular, that's a start. I have a lot of ESL readers according to my stats on Wattpad and translating that can be difficult. But if my work can be a gateway for them learning what that means, that's more good done.

Also, my fics attract a lot of eggs so like. Y'all are finding me anyway, I don't need the tags.

Anyway, here's some of the confirmed rep in book 1 of MoaH and in GoS if y'all need a reference though for what is blatantly in the works so far.

Queer Rep

Marela is a lesbian and in a relationship with Saddiqah by the end of book 1

Link & Saddiqah are both bi-icons (confirmed in the Din's Temple arc) with femme preferences

The fortuneteller in Lake Town (Hart) uses she/they pronouns

The tour guide (unnamed) in Lake Town uses they/them pronouns

Zelda's middle sibling is transmasc, though he is not reintroduced as such until book 2 for plot reasons. His identity and the story around it is given a serious storybeat and is one of the reasons why MoaH Link is my only Link I firmly will say is a cis man, because I'm making a point of in having Link as an example of healthy masculinity (as a cis man) for a trans kid trying to find a role model on it. The series does not use his deadname again though after Link finds out in book 1

They show up later in book 1, but there's a gay couple in the Marksmen, Sorol and Kutt

That's just book 1. I've got an enby knight and an enby Goron in book 2. I've also gone over how some of the Gerudo naming conventions work in my worldbuilding posts to include enby rep like the Gerudo word for nonbinary, vyu, though Dirjaani Gerudo culture doesn't come up in the books until book 3.

Over in GoS, Endeavor is actually a huge part of my coming to terms with my own gender. Originally published with she/her pronouns, the current edits are giving Endeavor they/them pronouns to accurately reflect what I didn't have the language for in high school when I started writing GoS. Endeavor is agendered.

Endeavor has two moms

Two of the Earth Sages, Insen and Hira, are in a relationship, they are both men.

Disability Rep

Lance, Link's dad, uses mobility aids due to an injury that forced him to retire from the Marksmen.

Link has ADHD with anxiety symptoms, chiefly social. This is an intentional conversation on courage and how we define it.

Zelda is autistic. MoaH Zelda is also plus-sized.

Floan is auADHD, she has a special interest in bugs

Kaju, the son of Lake Town's steward, has a prosthetic leg

Ambrose has severe motion sickness (horseback riding is about the most he can handle, but he will not fight on horseback)

Not strictly a disability, but it's a point of worldbuilding that most Hyrulean lineage Zora don't do well in the cold, so there are accessibility enchantments made to allow for traveling extensively in colder regions.

Also not strictly a disability, but sign language is much more widely taught in Hyrule. It's a mandatory lesson for the Marksmen for tactics reasons, so Ambrose, Saddiqah, and Link all have at least a conversational level of fluency in it if not better.

Back in GoS, Link's granddad Lynard uses mobility aids.

Parijan, Guardian of the Spirit Sage, is blind.

Saruo, Priestess of Courage, has anxiety. Again, I like messing with the definition of courage.

BIPOC Rep

Ok, admittedly. MoaH is a little light here. But! In my defense, it's because I want the worldbuilding of MoaH to code countries and cultures with certain ethnicities and not races/species (i.e. the Gerudo aren't just automatically Middle Eastern, there are several cultures where Gerudo are prominent members with multiple influences). So in Hyrule, where the primary culture is Hyrulean coded European generic, there aren't as many opportunities for coded characters ethnically because that's not how I'm handling it. There are characters who are BIPOC, but it feels like a bit of a cop out to include them because then I just list off all the Gerudo who show up because their POC and that feels a little cheap. I am including them too, but I want to preface that other regions of this series are going to be better at this particular beat (I circle back to the enby knight, who is also BIPOC of Faronan-Dirjaani heritage, but that's book 2).

Basic ones, there are three major Gerudo characters in book 1: Saddiqah El Amin, Dragmire Al Iber, and Ayad Al I'Tidal. They are all of the more standard Hyrulean-Dirjaani lineages closest to canon expectation. Dirjaani cultures are influenced by Middle Eastern and North African cultures, so they are all women of color.

Saddiqah in particular, and this gets into spoilers so I'll be brief, is specifically coded to be a biracial woman. For reasons that come up in book 3. It's why her horse, Ajan, has a Creole name which is outside of the typical naming conventions I'm grabbing for the Hyrulean-Dirjaani names.

The Sheikah are coded as Japanese in the games, so Impa is coded as Japanese along with the Hyrulean Sheikah. Sorol is also a Hyrulean Sheikah, so this applies for him too.

The Dreeka in Hyrule are generally coded to be an indigenous group. Because of their relationship with the Sheikah, primary influence there is the Ainu. This includes all of the Dreeka characters introduced in MoaH (Constant, Temperance, Clarity, etc.) as well as the Drex in GoS (Endeavor, Justice, Zeal, etc.)

Over in GoS, Parijan and Dabir are both Middle Eastern coded, we are aiming to be more specific in the edits.

Sayyida and Daniel are both black.

This is loose canon, but I think there's a real read to GoS about making Link black because of the nameless and the felons' rights allegory that that is meant to be. I will not confirm it because Link is meant to be a stand in for the reader and how they see him, but I do like the interpretation.

And again, this is just book 1. There are nine books planned, there will be more.

Watched the TV show before I read the book so had images of the characters already in my head and couldn't imagine for myself how they looked, which was interesting. I think I would have thought of Crowley as similar to David Tennant anyway though, I wouldn't have imagined Aziraphale as similar to Michael Sheen but he does a great job in the show. Makes a LOT of sense to me that Crowley made Glasgow and Aziraphale Edinburgh, scruffy tough boyfriend vs posh pansy boyfriend - just feels right in my bones. I started counting the amount of times Aziraphale's 'manicured hands' were mentioned, hoping it would be a funny reoccurring thing throughout the book, but it only happened twice :( BUT the gay comments/jokes towards Aziraphale was actually a funny reoccurring thing, a few of my favourites are: Aziraphale having a "penchant for Wilde first editions", being described as "gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide", and the fact he is called a fucking FAGGOT and poofter. Crowley is obviously implied to be bi/gay when Anathema basically thinks "oh these two men are...yknow... and in love so I'm safe" when she gets in his car but it is nothing like Aziraphale's descriptions. The book had a lot of silly little things that I really enjoyed: Aziraphale eating a devilled egg made me chuckle, the biker guy with fish tattoo'd on one hand and chip on the other, Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer - like just stupid things that are absolutely brilliant. I have mixed thoughts on the depictions of the Four Horsemen, War was kinda lame and I didn't think she was as cool a concept as the others, Famine was probably my favourite in terms of the concept, Pollution replacing Pestilence is so clever, and then Death was just an edgelord but I'm not sure how else you could write that kind of character. Pepper (aka Pippin Galadriel Moonchild) was one of my favourite characters, which is weird since she is supposed to be a sort of parallel to War who I didn't like. I really was not a fan of Newton Pulsifer and his whole thing with Anathema, he is definitely my least favourite character and it annoys me that she had to put up with his annoying ass. Also, the air base guard thinking that England had gone soft and smiling at the idea of Newton burning faggots was actually wild. Overall, very silly book that I enjoyed very much!

You know, before Lily's Steven Universe video came out, I remember watching a stream of hers where she was editing it together, repeatedly doing takes to sound angrier and angrier about things. But the thing that turned me off of her and her content wasn't that. I never believed her shrieking was genuine, I had always seen it as performance meant to be comedic. What turned me off of her was her shit talking another content creator, SF Debris. Why? Because he has always been open about the fact that while he understands what women are and aren't aesthetically pleasing in traditional senses, the only person he ever felt attraction to in his life is his wife, and he's never had any desire to have romance with anyone else. Also it took him about five years to realize he was attracted to and in love with the woman he then asked out and ended up married to.

Now, to anyone else on Earth, there's nothing offensive about any of that. While SF Debris has never used any labels to describe himself or identified as such, a lot of his viewers think of him as being on the ace spectrum. Lily, though, has one major disagreement with him, which is that her least favorite Star Trek series is his favorite and her favorite series, he calls out for dismissing murder when it's done by the good guys.

So Lily went off on a tangent when someone (who presumably didn't know Lily hates being recommended things and cannot be rational about someone else liking/disliking a thing she dislikes/likes) recommended she watch his video on the Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode Profit and Lace, in which he tears apart the transphobia of the episode and the grossness of how that episode handles misogyny and feminism, and Lily. lost. her. shit. She went on a rant about how SF Debris isn't really LGBT (he's never claimed to be) and he's lying about his supposed lack of sexual attraction and everyone wants to fuck. That's a phrase she used that really made me uncomfortable. Everyone wants to fuck. He must be lying when he says he's not interested in having sex with anyone other than this one person. It must be virtue signalling, it must be lying, it's manipulation, he's manipulating the audience by playing an unrealistic saintly persona, and the kicker, that he's probably sleeping with underage fans.

I'm not ace, but I know a lot of ace people, and I just found that so uncomfortable, this idea that they're all lying, that they're trying to trick you so they can sleep with you. I'm trans and that's what people in my country say about trans men and trans women and often nonbinary people, too. Queer people (which I count him as, even if he has not used the term for himself) aren't lying to you in order to get into your pants. Queer people aren't secret predators. If you don't like SF Debris' videos, that's fine. I dislike most of his Gundam videos and I don't think his Enterprise analyses were very good or in-depth. That doesn't mean he's lying about his sexuality so he can fuck people and it especially doesn't mean he's suddenly into children! And it's even worse in context because his twin sons are disabled and he's mentioned worrying about protecting them from predators because the stats for abuse from people outside the family are much higher for disabled kids. She saw a queer-ish man and declared him a predator even though fear of predators is something that plagues him to this day due to his kids' disabilities. She saw an ace-ish person and declared them a liar automatically.

I don't like Lily. She's still trans and bi. I don't like Keffals. She's still trans. I don't like my Intro To Buddhism professor, he's still gay. People don't become liars once you dislike them. And while I do believe Lily is a predator, that took years of evidence to make me believe, I didn't go from "I don't like her content" to "she's a pedo" because those two things are not related. Your gender, sexual orientation, romantic orientation or lack of those things are unrelated to your actions, and it is predatory action that shows us who a predator is.

That was the day I quit watching Lily's videos. The way she talked about this guy who is on the ace spectrum was so fucked up that I couldn't excuse it or rationalize it away. Because it wasn't recorded, I'm sure she'd deny it ever happened. But the way she said "everyone wants to fuck" as if it was written in Scripture or an undeniable fact is burned into my memory. It was said with the certainty that queerphobes have when they say "there are two genders" or "you can't change your gender". It was said with the same 'you're ridiculous for suggesting otherwise' dismissiveness and disgust.

Ace people, you are valid. Demi people, you are valid. If you are only very rarely or never attracted to someone and never or rarely feel romantic connections with people, that is not a lie and you are not secretly gross or bad or wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone not being into sex or romance and it's not a character flaw of any kind.

I've been noticing an uptick in TERFs and radfems saying men can't be ace lately, that that's a trap meant to lure you into sex with them. So maybe that's why this is on my mind lately. It's so much like her take on this guy that when I hear aphobia I think of Lily.

I'm not ace but my heart breaks for ace people. Just for living their lives and being honest they're viewed as predatory liars.

You'd think a trans woman would know better than to treat others that way.

i'm going to go ahead and also assume that person has never interacted with LO or spoke a word to her. that's some serious unhealthy level of projection that LO really needs to work on.
