I honestly am terrible at small talk but I feel like I’ve gotten way better at it recently due to the “small talk” unit in duo lingo for the language im learning. Whoooole bunch of little scripts with variations to work with.
That being said though, I think that “small talk” is different in neurodivergent circles. Like we HAVE “small talk” in that we have ways of signaling “I am friendly and safe” verbally.
Saying something weird or asking about any kind of merch/crafty fashion/etc that could be related to a hyper fixation or SPIN, asking weird little icebreakers, referencing memes, complaining about poor accommodations or social rules, all signal “AYO IM NEURODIVERSE AND FRIENDLY AND SAFE, YOU COUDL DROP THE MASK IF YOU WANT.”
It’s like the “I like your hair/pins/patches/etc for queer people.”
One of the reasons I think what I perceive as neurotypical modes of small talk makes me uncomfortable is because cause to me it feels like a signal of “time to mask now, I’m not safe for you.” Or “I’m not comfortable unmasking around you yet.”
Maybe it’s just culture clash. Still don’t really know how to talk to people who aren’t neurodivergent without feeling anxious and out of place. I wanna find a way to meet in the middle, maybe we could both be comfortable or be uncomfortable together?
I know this is the Anti Small Talk Website but small talk is one of the most effective social glues out there for getting to know people and forming friendships with them.
When I was just starting out at a job right after college I had a coworker who I thought was the nicest person alive and after a few weeks I realized this was just because she consistently asked other people things like, "How ya doing? Whatcha having for lunch? Got any weekend plans? Seen any good movies lately?" instead of politely ignoring everyone around her.

wait do people read first person stories and think they're the ones in the story???
Saw people talking about not liking first person, which is fair, but their reasoning was like "I would not do that" and I don't understand that mindset.
First person stories are still about a character. A character making their own decisions. First person isn't about you???? At least I thought it wasn't. What am I missing? I've always seen first person as just a more in-depth look into a character's mind and stricter POV. Not as a reader stand-in.

Back in my day we respected disagreements in ship tastes and we were the very foundation of modern fandom and “cringe culture”. These aren’t hard concepts. People nowadays (mostly kids) are SO eager to get in internet fights and debate “problematic” things, as well as cancelling creators and media for often trivial reasons. We used to be so content with “hey the creator sucks but the media is pretty awesome”. Now we pick each other apart for liking things certain people made. We “have” to boycott problematic creators’ media for the sake of rebelling against capitalism. Blah. Engaging in fandom is exhausting nowadays, and I hate to see it. People take their distaste of things so personally.

i thought this was completely normal until waking up later after the pain was gone.

the older i get and the closer i am to reaching 30, the more the people around me try to deny me my age. it’s a constant ‘oh you’re just turning 29 again teehee 🤭’ or ‘dont tell your SO that, he’ll leave you for a younger model 😉’ and i just???? hate it?????????
i spent my entire teenaged years fighting for my life. i crawled through the deepest pits of my depression to cling to the promise of a life beyond that pain. i was so convinced that i was going to die young, that i would never see the grace of my age starting with a 2, let alone 3.
so im going to turn 30, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me from loving it.

i feel like people are skimming over the uk riots in a way that makes me want to tear my hair out. muslims in the uk are in active danger. immigrants in the uk are in active danger. refugees in the uk are in active danger. people of colour in the uk are in active danger. asian communities in the uk are in active danger. black communities in the uk are in active danger.
there are massive far right riots throughout the country right now and people like fucking elon musk and nigel farage are inciting it and still have a platform to speak. people have used three young girls deaths, people's genuine grief in southport, to try and gain traction for their own racist bullshit and it's working.
a lot of refugee charities have been forced to close leaving many people without support, homes, funding, food, etc. if you aren't able to donate please consider sending a message via the conversation over borders campaign! it will send a hopeful, welcoming letter to a refugee in the uk. there is also a guide to staying safe here.
please do your own research and donate to refugee charities, anti-islamophobia charities, mosques who are trying to rebuild after being destroyed, counter protesters, here are some i've heard positive things about but the list is extensive; southport strong together (support for the southport victims and their families), southport mosque rebuilding, riot repair fund, middlesbrough vulnerable residents, nasir mosque rebuilding, hull help for refugees, bristol welcomes migrants,
