Lmao I don't know if it's a benefit or not but one weird thing for me I think getting into FE3H a couple years after the fact was that like. Three Hopes came out so soon after I finished my original playthrough of Houses (by which I mean uh. Playing Azure Moon, Cindered Shadows, Silver Snow, Crimson Flower, and Verdant Wind consecutively in that order and then Azure Moon again for 'understanding the context and capping off the experience' reasons in a six month, 500-hour marathon) that I just launched right into it, and like. Never solidified my feelings about Houses and the lore in that before I played Hopes (in an Azure Gleam -> Scarlet Blaze -> Golden Wildfire 200-hour marathon).

They were all kinda one experience. My brain internalized the lore of both games as one consistent and cohesive whole without really like, seeing the lore in Hopes as any different than just another route of the same game. Both games already have multiple routes that give you pieces of the lore, it didn't really feel any different to me to be getting more lore in the routes where Byleth didn't kill Shez. So both games ended up having equal weight to me in terms of like, forming an impression of the characters in the games and who they are as people and what's important to them.

For me this situation is a lot more nuanced than others, since Soren by his own past was treated as an outcast by Laguz as a Branded. It’s not great of course, but he’s an actual victim of prejudice as a child who ended up impacted by that. It’s one of the reasons the Laguz treat Branded is such a flaw of theirs continuing the cycle. Branded as a whole generally don’t like their Laguz side as a result, which we know. Since they can at least “pass” for being human and will be treated as people. Whereas Laguz can tell by instinct alone.

​Indeed, Soren has his own reasons to be prejudiced against the Laguz, and iirc since he was around Gallia when he was young/meet Ike, he already faced the beast laguz's brand of indifference when he was younger - which is why he, most likely, so viciously attacks and insults Mordecai, aka, blue teddy tiger bear, when they first meet.

While his backstory with Laguz is not comparable to Jill's - who was legit raised/indoctrined since her wee days to think they're subhumans so to her it's a natural thing to call them there is no animosity, and who has to "unlearn" what she grew up with - Soren's BG isn't developed at this point (I think? i don't remember if POR supports are chapter timed?) so we have a situation where Ike (the player) is very severe and angry at people who insults and discriminate at the Laguz (Jill and several NPCs), but some members of the cast still insult/discriminate against Laguz, and by the end of this game (FE10 shows some growth!), even doing all optional conversations, they do not grow - which is sort of rich, given how the protagonist wants people to grow out of their initial prejudices and ultimately work together.

Hell, even Shinon, the loudest Laguz "hater" in FE9 gets to support a Laguz, Janaff, and they ultimately sort of make-up, with Shinon wanting to learn more about Janaff's life experiences.

I know Soren's growth will happen in FE10, he will ultimately help Skrimir - a laguz - without calling him a subhuman or any names, and even suffer/tolerate his stupidity.

And yet, in FE9, his behaviour sticks out, maybe more strongly, because he is supposed to be close to Ike and Ike actively fights against any discriminatory prejudices/feelings in his own group.

So while Soren has his own reasons - that explain his behaviour but doesn't justify it in the slightest - FE9 fails to adress and condemn his prejudice like it does to Jill, Shinon, Lethe and even Stefan* - who has a similar background! -, save for that line where Ike gets a minor injury due to Soren insulting Mordecai and Lethe.

Jill talks to Lethe and her character arc is growing past her prejudices, Lethe talks to Jill/Ike and finally accepts to have Beorc allies/friends, Shinon talks to Janaff and sees him at the end of their support as a fellow being with life experiences and not a suhuman anymore, Stefan talks to Mordecai and they ultimately became friends...

I know the devs always intended for Tellius to be a duology, so maybe they reserved his character growth for the second game (I still hope they didn't want to nuke supports as they did from day 1 !) - but as FE9 stands, it's as if we're told "Soren can still be prejudiced as fuck in this game and it won't cause any problems because he will grow in the next game".

Which is... sort of meh tier writing.

*Just like Soren, Stefan is a branded who "insults" Mordecai, but he later talks to him, shares more about his POV and own prejudices (why he thinks Laguz hate Brandeds on a racial level), saying he and Mordecai cannot be friends, until Mordecai says he doesn't give a fig about his universe laws and will befriend Stefan nonetheless.

On the…plus??? Side I do actually know at least some of the behavior that the tags were referring to wasn’t actually me.

I guess the real lesson from this is that there’s no point in trying to support a character you like, you just have to be pleasant enough that people would want to maybe vote for who you say in the tags. Funny joke comments don’t help tho (especially if they rely on a more caustic speech style), and anything that could be considered negative to the other side will make people who don’t know anything about either annoyed.

If I could re-write any of Takumi's supports like completely it would be his convos with Felicia. Like I will say all the time I think Takumi is a very well written character esppp for Fates (not ragging on Fates I love Fates -- a lot of charas unfortunately feel one-note though, which could also be a localization issue), but legitimately I think his supports with Felicia are the only ones that are just. Bad.

I think, part of the appeal for Takumi for me, is whenever he Is a jackass, he 1) Faces immediate consequences for it, 2), Often is the case he didn't mean for it to come out that way and/or his temper/insecurities got the better of him, and 3), He always makes up for it somehow. He's always very aware of where he went wrong, sometimes immediately, and will have to take a little time to himself to sort out his feelings and properly apologize for what he said/did.

A Lot of his supports follow this beat for beat, with some exceptions here and there (or maybe just for Sakura lmfao). So like. I Can see him being an asshole to Felicia. That isn't out of character for him.

But what I DO feel very strongly is out of character actually is that! I'm not sure if it's just cause Felicia doesn't really fight back or call him out on it, but he feels way too mean spirited. ESPECIALLY when it comes to Felicia telling him about the Ice Tribe and where she came from. Like. Idk maybe I interpreted it wrong but his entire support chain w Leo is bonding over cultural exchange (after they. Stop fighting for a minute LMFAO). AND I feel like it's shown in Mozu's and Oboro's supports, that even if he's not particularly interested in the subject matter the other is focused on, he will still engage with it in good faith (even if it's to prove a point when it comes to Mozu, and I guess bias when it comes to Oboro).

Idk honestly the more I mull over his supports the more I'm doubting myself about it HAHAHA but like. Even their S rank convo feels dismissive and mean spirited, which is not like Takumi at all. Usually after the turn around he's genuinely enthusiastic about whatever it is he's bonding over w the other character. It just never sat right with me, never felt like Takumi really like, internalized where he went wrong/figured out how to fix it, Felicia never stood up for herself and cried the entire time (which like??? Idk I feel like, even if he's bad with other people's emotions, I feel like it would have been in character for him to be startled by it, and regretful). It just felt bad the entire time and that REALLY SUCKS bc they're literally both my Fates faves LMFAOOOOO

Started Black Eagles now as my second playthrough, I know WAY less about both Black Eagles + Golden Deer, so I'm a lot more blind on their characters and how they're handled outside of the basic obvious

So far. I don't really know.

I'mma be real though there is a Very heavy "Omg look aren't they So Weird and Quirky" to a lot of the full early group scenes and it's. fine? But they're also not any weirder or quirkier than any other houses. Really. So it just feels a bit weirdly lampshaded and also. kinda overblown.

I really liked Dorothea and Edelgard's C-support, and I think I'm gonna really like Edelgard, she's well-written and that's just point blank.

I've recruited Mercedes because I want her supports with Jeritza, I have recruited Marianne because that's just a thing I'm always gonna do ig, and also I saw a snippet of her Ferdinand support and now I Cannot Not get it I'm so excited for that one. I'm gonna recruit Lysithea because I want her supports with Edelgard, but I couldn't New Game Purchase her A support so eh. normal recruitment moment.

But I'm interested in seeing how these guys play out.

Mildly unrelated character rant that delves into an Edelgard rant: (Hello, I treat fictional characters like chess pieces, I like all of them, don't worry about it.) Edelgard as a character makes my literary analysis brain go haywire so eh. Have this.

Every single character in Three Houses thinks THEY are right and that's why the story is interesting, and Edelgard especially I think proves this. Also I love how you can see a certain level of self-awareness in her already because Edelgard, as proven by her convo with Dimitri at the end of Azure Moon, she considers herself a necessary sacrifice (sidenote: Her going all Omg you think I'm Strong teehee at Dimitri in that convo will never not be funny it was SO funny, AND also one of the most important lines in the entire game that says SO MUCH ABOUT HER VIEW OF HERSELF??? Shit Self-Esteem Von Hresvelg is THAT YOU-), she doesn't consider herself one of the strong ones, she's doing this because Somebody Has To, and she realises not everybody will agree with her, and I just find it awfully interesting.

Mostly because I also interpret Edel as a LOT less in control than she thinks she is and Wants to think that she is and I might go off about this later but tldr that scene where she drops the dagger and seems legitimately surprised at Monica not being Monica to me is one of the most important things about Edelgard's entire situation, like, she has had those who slither surrounding her her entire life they're definitely diverting the blame a Little, and yes if you ask me, I think Edelgard's also a bit scared of admitting that she might've been wrong because that would mean admitting that she was had and if she admits that she was had, everything that she has put on the line for her life having any meaning left by now would. you know. crumble. ANYWAYS more about that once I have seen more of Edel's own views of herself but from Azure Moon alone this is such an easy reading of her to me.

(Tldr I think there's a reason why Edel and also I think Byleth's Crimson Flower ending is all about "Okay fuck now we gotta deal with those who slither fucking hell-")
