seeing last jedi again was so good. i will be fighting in the last jedi trenches until i die. if last jedi has no fans left on earth then i am dead etc etc. some very rambling and incoherent thoughts under the cut:
i love luke so much in tlj. luke skywaker is my all-time favourite character from anything, because he really embodies one of the core messages from star wars: being good is a choice, and it's a choice you have to keep making. right from the start of new hope, we see how luke is just constantly thrust into situations where, time and time again, he's given the choice of the easy way out, or tempted by the dark side. but luke always chooses to do the right thing, even when it's hard. in rotj we do get a glimpse of him as this aloof, emotionless jedi, but then it all unravels in the finale when he is forced to confront vader. i know a lot of the vitriol around last jedi is from people who think it ruined luke's character, but to me, his arc makes perfect sense. sequels luke is a man who has spent his whole life making sacrifices and working hard to do good, until it's all torn away from him by the dark side - a dark side plot specifically designed to undermine luke and the light, mind you - yet he still blames himself, because a fleeting temptation from the dark to take the easy route out and save the galaxy from what he saw in ben almost got him, but it didn't. and he paid for that temptation dearly. i would have hated to see a sequels-era luke who was just some epic version of the distant, quasi-mystical jedi knight we see in rotj (as i've seen some people saying that's how he should have been). what kind of character arc is that? he gets to the end of the OT and then never changes? i'm drawn to luke because of his humanity, the fact that you still see the tatooine farmboy in him years later. his sacrifice at the end of last jedi is so beautiful and poignant to me; a lesser script (cough tros cough) would have had him jump in an x-wing and show up to plow through the first order with his lightsaber. i love what we get instead: his moment with leia, her touching his hands and realising he's a projection - his knowing wink to threepio - the image of him emerging from the dust and smoke, unscathed, and how it clearly puts the absolute fear into kylo ren - the way he doesn't even attack, just dodges and blocks - then, finally, the shot of him on ahch-to, watching the sunset, and, once he's gone, the image of his cloak blowing away in the wind, symbolic of his spirit joining the cosmic force. that's my jedi master luke. funny, powerful, human, flawed, but still, after all this time, making the choice to do good and fight for others, even if it's the hardest thing he'll ever do. whew. luke skywalker i love you.
i love how last jedi looks. with the exception of maybe empire, i think it's the best-looking of all the films. it's stuffed with references to absolutely classic cinema, like the shot in canto bight that's an homage to the café dolly shot in wings, or the classic hitchcockian dolly zoom as finn and rose look over the cliff, and the opening sequence with the bombing run is just a straight homage to old war movies, which is just what the OT did with the space battles being shot-for-shot remakes of ww2 dogfight footage. original-flavour star wars was a love letter to to so many other films and tv shows, so this feels so natural. at the same time, there's a lot of sequences that feel really innovative for star wars, like the montage that accompanies rey's connection to the force on ahch-to, or the film's extensive use of close-up shots and slow-mo. the lighting is gorgeous. finn's fight with phasma looks astonishing on the big screen - the colour grading and visual effects really go off in that scene.
i love all the force skype sessions with kylo and rey, but especially the scene where she's out in the rain and, when they disconnect, you see kylo running his hand over his face then shaking the rainwater from his glove. something I hadn't appreciated before is how well the film sells you on the idea that they are both present in the same space, despite seeing them both shot against different backgrounds. the intimacy of the rain-on-glove thing gets me every time.
i love everybody's arcs. every single member of the main trio has a full arc in the film. rose tico is such a lovely addition to the main cast, i hate how she got totally shafted in rise of skywalker.
on a completely superficial note: the main cast are all at their hottest in last jedi. especially poe dameron. especially poe dameron.
the throne room fight scene is one of my favourite movie scenes ever (and in star wars, it's only beaten out by the binary sunset scene from new hope). i WISH i could relive the first time i saw it at the midnight screening i went to in 2017. i may have been sitting politely, but i was hooting and hollering internally.
rian johnson, they could never make me hate you.

luke figuring out reader's father is obi-wan. like, it would be so awkward talking to obi-wan's force ghost now, "how am i suppose to tell him you're my partner?" 😭😭

word count: 1,1k
summary: where luke finds out who y/n's father is
a/n: how my mind works: if obi-wan is y/n's father, then satine has to be her mother lmao (it's not mentioned!) there is just no other way for me

"W-What did you just say?", Luke stutters, halting in his steps, his eyes growing wide while he looks at you as if you just turned into a rancor right before his eyes. Since he stopped you in the middle of your rant with this kind of expression on his face, you frown, not quite sure what he wants you to repeat since you just kept talking and talking.
"Uhm, I just said that we are going to carry out this mission without any problems..?", you say, but it sounds more like a question since you are feeling really unsure as his facial expression does not change. Judging by his big eyes and open mouth, this was apparently not the answer he was hoping for and even though you are confused, you can't help but find him especially cute right now.
Usually, Luke has a strict plan, always following every order, but right now it seems like there is no logical explanation for whatever is going on in his mind and you genuinely can't wait to know what caused this sudden change in his demeanour.
"N-No, no. I mean about your.. your father?", Luke tries again, but this time he actually seems like his mind has stopped spinning and he came back to the here and now, looking at you like you are the one acting weirdly. Which you definitely aren't, but you can't suppress a small giggle as he appears to hang on your every word in this moment. Now that he mentioned your father, you at least know what caught him off guard and you can hopefully help him.
"Oh, about that. Well, I basically only said that I will guide you the same way my father used to guide yours in the Clone Wars", you shrug nonchalantly, still not getting why this simple fact got him all messed up.
"And your father is...?"
"Obi-Wan Kenobi?", you finish his sentence, giving him the answer he has been waiting for. Suddenly, Luke's eyes grow even bigger - if that is even humanly possible - and now you are not sure if you may have actually turned into a rancor right in front of him. But no, you are still very much human and Luke is still very much acting weird.
"Luke? Are you alright? Do I need to call a medic?", you ask, actually concerned now that he hasn't answered you for at least two minutes. He is just standing in front of you, frowning as he seems to be connecting things in his head. The more you look at him, the more it dawns on you what your words might have to do with all of this.
"Wait, you didn't know?", you question, a more or less humourless chuckle leaving your lips as you can't believe that he actually did not know this very important fact about you. About you and who your father is.
"You only told me about your mother, really. And you never dropped any names! I knew your father was a Jedi but not that he was the Obi-Wan Kenobi!", Luke whisper-yells at you now, finally regaining his voice, looking like his whole view of the galaxy was shattered with this one single statement.
The way he runs his hand through his hair, ruffling through it, and how he bites down on his lower lip, finally breaks you and you erupt into a fit of laughter. He looks so cute, all flabbergasted and confused, that you just can't help yourself but to laugh at the weirdness of this situation. You would really like to say that you did talk about your very prominent father, but right now, you can't think of one moment where you actually dropped his name. And this makes you laugh even more and, slowly but surely, Luke starts to laugh too.
"May I introduce myself?", you manage to bring out after your laughter died down, hands on your hips as you try to catch your breath, feeling exhausted by all the laughing. "I'm Y/N Kenobi. At your service, General Skywalker."
Holding out your hand, you wait for him to place a gentle kiss on the back of it as part of your introduction, but Luke only shakes his head in amusement, still too caught up in his thoughts.
"You can't be serious, Y/N!", he almost reproaches you, running his hands over his face while sighing. Then, he takes a step closer, grabbing your hand and placing it against his chest as he leans in.
"How am I supposed to tell him that you are my partner? That we are a thing?", Luke whispers, but he is doing it so quietly as if he expects your father to listen in on every word, putting strong emphasis on his last words.
"I mean, that is not really my problem, is it?", you tease him, taking his proximity to you as a chance to place a soft kiss on his cheek, which riles him up even more. Caressing his cheek with one hand, you fix his disheveled hair with the other and smile your brightest smile at him while he apparently sees his life passing by.
"You are evil, you know that right?", Luke whines, pouting while you are enjoying this more than you probably should. But deep inside, you got a feeling that your father already knows about the two of you. You certainly did not talk to him about it, however, he has always been good at observing and you feel like this ability got even better since he became one with the Force.
"Just.. don't act like you did right now and you will be fine", you giggle, pinching his cheek before leaving a quick kiss on his lips. You catch his eye, wanting him to say something, anything, but all you see is utter fear. Only when you notice that he is looking at something behind you, you follow his stare and see your father, in all his Force ghost glory, making his way over to the both of you.
"Oh, is that Leia over there? I really need to talk to her about the mission", you lie with a bright smile on your lips and you squeeze Luke's hand to give him strength and support.
Completely frozen, he stands in front of you, but he somehow manages to take a deep breath after a few seconds to mentally prepare himself for what is about to come. The strongest Jedi you know nearly gets defeated by a simple conversation with your father, his master.
"I will leave you two alone then", you say your goodbye, waving to your father who is coming closer as you two talk, and make your way to actually find Leia. Turning around one last time, you give your boyfriend a thumbs up which he only replies to with a small smile.
Luke Skywalker is a great fighter, a Jedi who always finds a way out, who always has a plan, who can face the strongest opponent, but the one person he can't face right now is your father. And when he does, as your boyfriend, it is not as bad as expected.

Hmmmm….im wondering how you feel about hera and maybe Ezra?
jess i love you so much 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 thank u for letting me talk about the blorbos!!!!!!!
let's start with hera 💚
how i feel about this character:
how do i even begin to express how much i love thee hera syndulla. that is my WIFE. i would kill for her. i would die for her. i would let her talk my ear off about piloting. i would cook her dinner (bc i know in my heart she can't cook). but seriously, i just so admire her dedication to the rebel cause, her standing up and fighting so that everyone in the galaxy can be free. the way that she is filled to the brim with hope and the conviction that they will win, they will beat the empire. she just truly embodies having the heart of a rebel, and i love her so so so so sooooo much!
all the people i ship romantically with this character:
kanan kanan kanan. just kanan <3 he's her person <3 i have a hard time picturing her with anyone else (which i explain a bit better here), and i also headcanon hera as demi, so i think this fits with that too.
my non-romantic otp for this character:
so hard to pick just one! but probably ezra. i'm just so so fond of their friendship, and how welcome hera made him feel immediately, and how much he admires her and learns from her. and they both embody that Star Wars Hope and i love them <3
my unpopular opinion about this character:
i've said it before and i'll say it again, but reducing hera down to just the Mom(tm) of the group is really unfair and disrespectful to her character. obviously being a mom becomes an intrinsic part of her once she has jacen, but she's not just a mom. but especially talking about her dynamic with the ghost crew, she's so much more than the mom of the group. she is a founding member of the rebellion! she's the best pilot in the galaxy (yes i am prepared to argue about this)! she and kanan are EQUAL. PARTNERS. her looking out for sabine and ezra is a little different, but when it comes to kanan and zeb, especially, they're two grown men and perfectly capable of taking care of themselves without hera being forced into a box to mom them.
one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
i wish we had gotten more of her backstory in rebels. we learn very little about her mom in rebels (they told us more in t*b*b, but still not much). and we know she had a brother, but we don't even know his name. also her relationship with her father is really complicated and i wanted more on that.
(there is also one particular scene in s4 that i'm really not a fan of and i think does a disservice to her character, though that's more on the writing than on her. and the way she was written in the ahsoka show (specifically her role as general) was pretty awful imo. but also, more a writing thing than her fault).
and now ezra 💙
how i feel about this character:
google show results for: how to talk about ezra bridger without bursting into tears
like that is my specialist little guy, and i know that sounds unserious, but i am SO so very serious. like! that's my LITTLE GUY!!!!! i am saying that with my WHOLE CHEST and so much AFFECTION AND LOVE. he is everything to me. my sweet cheese. my short king. expert at casting animal friendship. he is the soul of the ghost crew. and imo, he is one of the few characters who embodies hope and love in the same way that luke skywalker does. i love him more and more every single rewatch and i could spend 500 more hours explaining how much i love him and it still wouldn't be enough.
all the people i ship romantically with this character:
big fan of him and tristan (sabine's brother). don't worry mr. bridger. i saw you babbling and blushing like a lovestruck idiot when you met tristan.
also i think him and luke would be cute (they WOULD bicker constantly about ezra being 2 days older, it would be utterly adorable).
there's probably others, and i'm pretty open with who i would ship him with! so long as it's a boy. you can pry gay ezra from my cold dead hands.
my non-romantic otp for this character:
sabine!!!!!!!! that's his best friend!!!!!!!!!!!! sabine ezra siblingism forever and ever <333
my unpopular opinion about this character:
i don't think this is unpopular among most of the rebels fandom (at least not that i've observed on here, in the circles i'm in) but i KNOW there are swaths of the general sw population that think he's annoying and they can't stand him. and you know what! he IS annoying!!!! want to know why?? because he's a TEENAGE BOY!!!!!!! (same kind of people who call teenage ahsoka annoying). and he's just acting the way teenage boys do! like DUH he's being annoying, we're all annoying at 15! but he is absolutely one of the best star wars characters, he has such an incredible arc, and i will accept NO ezra slander in this house!
also leave his little gunsaber alone. y'all are just jealous that YOUR lightsaber can't also shoot people.
one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
hmmm. overall i am so utterly satisfied with his character arc. i do wish we had learned more about his parents.
and EYE would have done his story different from what they did in the ahsoka show. they could've made his time out in wild space so much fucking cooler, they could've done so much more with his force abilities adapting when he doesn't have a lightsaber. ahsoka is such a separate entity in my head from rebels, and his story in rebels is 10/10 amazing spectacular perfect! in the ahsoka show...well. it just could've been so much cooler and more impactful and well :/ we mostly got a nothing burger imo. (eman is great as a live action ezra though!).
also as a treat to me and the shatterpoint lineage, his new lightsaber should've been purple. and he should've had a sick ass space animal companion. he deserves it <3

I am once again obsessing over Mara and Anakin being narrative mirrors to each other.
Obi-Wan taking Anakin’s lightsaber away once he realizes that Anakin is no longer in the Light, then Luke giving Mara Anakin’s lightsaber because she’s trying her best to be in the Light.
Mara and Anakin, both groomed by Palpatine from a young age to be weapons for him, to do his bidding with no questions asked.
Mara and Anakin, who both break that manipulation by asking questions. Questions raised in them by Luke.
Palpatine wants both of them to either turn Luke or kill him, but both of them find themselves not incapable of hurting Luke, but not wanting to hurt Luke.
Neither of them want Luke to die because both of them want to know Luke. Both of them don’t want help, but want to be helped. Both of them felt alone, and both of them felt less alone when Luke was with them.
Their relationship to Luke (minus the romance, on Mara’s part, I’m talking purely the trilogy Mara was introduced in and the Original Trilogy of movies) is a direct parallel. Luke marks the beginning of the end of Anakin’s life, but the beginning of Mara being able to live. Luke giving Mara Anakin’s lightsaber is proof of this narrative mirroring, but also proof that Luke not only believed wholeheartedly in Anakin, but he’s now putting that unshakable trust in Mara.
The whole thing is fascinating because, if you really think about it, the Skywalker twins did the exact opposite of the stereotypical “if you’re a boy, you marry someone like your mom, if you’re a girl, you marry someone like your dad” thing. Mara is an Anakin parallel. Han isn’t technically a Padme parallel or mirror, but Han and Padme play similar roles in their stories, the third party love interest who is actually very talented with a blaster.
Luke married someone like his dad, Leia married someone like her mom, this is honestly something I wholeheartedly believe in and am shocked by every single time I think about it, despite the fact that I think about it often. I can’t get over it. It’s so… so funny.
(And yes, I am aware that Padme and Anakin were not, at that point in time, characters yet. Because Anakin was just the nebulous idea of good Vader and I’m pretty sure Padme isn’t even name-dropped once in any of the movies, until her actual appearance. This just makes it funnier.)
Anyway! All this! To say! I am obsessed with the idea of a Mara and Anakin dynamic! I think AU Anakin who never turns should be Mara’s Jedi Master because can you! Imagine! The! Chaos! They are two peas in a pod, both hanging on to their last shred of hope because they know Luke would be sad if they just snapped and murdered everyone who pisses them off!
Mara and Anakin should interact more because I think it would be the funniest shit ever, like really-

for mundane memories, formatted bc i saw others doing text like this and it looks Cute and Fun
╭─────────────╮
context: i am all might, this is my hero academia 😂
╰─────────────╯
📼💪 Hanta Sero: i have a lot of memories of him coming up to me and making observational jokes? like, endless hilarious jokes about really unexpected things
🍡🌌 Ochaco Uraraka: the poor girl was lacking funds and that resulted in some! very upsetting behavior! so i tried to make sure the student's fridge was always full and i got her a bunch of junk food and snacks all the time. i gave her an extra card i had and i also went a little overboard and got some room decorations and posters and stuff for her. she was the reason i changed the former policy that Might Tower's student outreach programs had, my dumb ass had not realized what was going on b4
📚🪆 Momo Yayorozu: the leader of the girl's sleepover squad. she was always getting new nail polish or types of tea or hair care products or face masks for all the girls to try together at a sleepover. and how do i know this? well, you'll never guess who was invited as an "honorary girl" to most of these sleepovers. it was shoto! betcha didn't see that coming. i was also there, haha!
🌑🐦‍⬛ Fumikage Tokoyami: he would write and share poetry often! it was pretty insightful and beautiful, and occasionally it would inspire his classmates bc i remember tsu sharing a few poems too
😈🗡️ Dark Shadow: dark shadow was such a disturbance in class until we started treating them like an actual person 😂 it made me rethink a lot of subtle rules that Nezu had, bc tokoyami's grades increased dramatically and dark shadow was able to perform better in P.E. when they knew the other parts of the lesson plan. who'd'a thunk it (this anime is a psychological horror)
🥊⛰️ Ejiro Kirishima: kirishima was so positive and supportive that you wouldn't expect him to struggle with negative self talk, but sometimes one on one tutoring got a little heavy! knowing his goals and inspirations helped me to give him pep talks and hype him up, and i also remember recommending a few movies, plus a documentary on crimson riot that he said he had never seen before. i told him i dye my hair too (bleach)
🪩🎭 Yuga Aoyama: after the whole. well. plot thing, he was so sad and so scared, but everyone in the class was very supportive and tried to be a good friend to him! he confided in me about feelings of guilt and shame sometimes, and i was grateful to be able to reassure him. it was also cool to be able to reassure him about having a quirk he wasn't born with, bc same hat.
🦁🥋 Mashirao Ojirou: we watched all of the star wars movies in 30 minute to an hour sessions after tutoring. his hero costume was inspired by luke skywalker's outfit in a new hope. it kind of ruled
👾💗 Mina Ashido: pinky helped me figure out a bunch of stretching routines for the class, especially her peers who had different body plans or muscle tension. tutoring her was more like her tutoring me half the time!!
🪞💡 Toru Hagakure: her quirk awakening was so cool, she got skilled enough at it to make bizarre glowing checkerboard patterns move across her body. she looked like a glitched minecraft texture sometimes, it was awesome
🐙🥷 Mezo Shoji: he was part of the poetry club and he also could play the sanshin (i think. it was tall and had three strings and he used a pick or his fingers). he was shy in front of groups but he was a beautiful performer and i might have cried the first time i heard him play
🍰🍬 Rikido Sato: he was so sweet and sensitive that he was one of the only people who could hold kouda's rabbit. i was in his room all the time because he kept baking me treats
🐇🕊️Koji Kouda: lemme tell you, this guy's quirk in the middle of summer when all the ants start trying to come indoors? game changer. one of my favorite things about him is he would baa like a sheep sometimes.
🚏⛑️ Tenya Iida: one time he ran out of glasses by breaking them all and he had to wear prescription swim googles until his replacements arrived. pure game, legends only
🎤🎚️ Kyoka Jirou: she made some seriously killer remixes in her free time, it was so awesome being able to hear them, like itching part of my brain. extremely stimmy hyperpop shawn wasabi core stuff, bangers only
🔥🧊 Shoto Todoroki: he had this ongoing theme where he would get mismatched red and white stuff, like pairs of shoes, which matched his hair colors. i remember him getting both vanilla and strawberry whenever he would get sweets, and he had this big knit blanket that was half white and half red that he used in the common area sometimes
🐸🌧️ Tsuyu Asui: tsu would ask the most interesting questions sometimes. like sometimes you'd just be sitting there in the common room doing something else, and she'd come up to you and then read you so severely it'd give me whiplash. i saw a few students react... poorly, to this, at times, but i think it was a testament to how observant tsu was that she could pinpoint not only someone's insecurities but even a few explanations for those insecurities, accurately. and some of her classmates seemed to really appreciate being so Seen and Known. definitely a trait that's valuable in a hero!! extremely awkward when she called me out on my hygiene due to my mental health 😂
🍇⛓️‍💥 Minoru Mineta: i dunno how to say this but in my canon she was trans. idk. an integral member of the girl's sleepover squad. as soon as she felt accepted she became the most cool and chill person ever, everyone loved her
🥦🐰 Izuku Midoriya: pretty much the most common activity Izuku did besides work out was sit next to me with his notebook and write stuff about me in it. he had a ruler or sometimes a measuring tape that he would use, and i would catch him measuring random parts of my body when i wasn't looking and writing it down. dude knew the exact length of my wrinkles and what not. just complete fanboy behavior, he had his hyperfixation on lock
*~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~*
🎞️♟️ Sir Nighteye: one of the most common memories i have is this repeated situation that i put us through where i had a crush on him, right? so i would be on the verge of confessing or kissing him or holding his hand but then he would use his quirk on me and see that i was about to do that and then he would get so flustered that i wouldn't. which is changing the future btw jsyk
🛡️⌨️ David Shield: shout out to that one semester of college where whenever i went to find david he was in the labs working without eating or sleeping, listening to ABBA on repeat. what a legend.
🔎👔 Naomasa Tsukauchi: when i met his sister for the first time then it suddenly explained like so much about him. he also helped me connect with an organization to foster kittens when i was rescuing them outside of work. we would text each other memes
👁️❌ Eraserhead: aizawa had this secret evil sixth sense where he could just tell whenever i was smoking and would magically appear out of nowhere (feeding stray alley cats) and catch me in the act (trying to quit)(not succeeding)(nicotine gum did not help)
🔊🎙️ Present Mic: president michael's radio show was extremely popular so whenever he would do a call challenge then his work phone would be destroyed with incoming messages. he was pretty much always ringing off the hook with work stuff but it was insurmountable on giveaway days.
🪤🔒 Midnight: we would go out drinking with her friends a lot, sometimes with coworkers but sometimes she would introduce me to all sorts of folks. she was extremely social and popular??!
👻🗃️ Ectoplasm: he flipping loved karaoke, he would only go out with any of us if we were going to do karaoke. he would use his quirk to sing harmonies. he also did jigsaw puzzles in the common area sometimes, and sudoku.
⚕️🌀 Thirteen: she had such a messed up sleep schedule dude, so when we figured out that we had the same taste in tv then the dorm couch became like. a crash pad. usually one of us was leaving a recently vacated depression nest of blankets and snacks with a nature documentary playing
🚧🏢 Cementoss: ken was such a sweetheart he was always giving me sweets and trying to care for my wellbeing. he liked nature documentaries too so he was part of the late night cuddle puddle often, altho he usually went to bed instead of sleeping on the couch

In the 1981 Star Wars Radio Drama, Luke Skywalker and his best friend Biggs Darklighter reunite on Tatooine for one last trip through Beggar's Canyon.
-------
Biggs: Well, they're right about one thing, Luke. The rebellion against the Empire is a long way from here. You know, I doubt the Imperials would bother with this system.
Luke: But I could've sworn I saw-
Biggs: Hey, c'mon, I'll tell you what, let's take a spin in that landspeeder of yours, huh? I'd like to take one last look at Beggar's Canyon, y'know, for old times' sake?
Luke: Sure Biggs. Boy, you should've been there the other day when we ran the canyon. Fixer started bragging about how 'he could do anything that Biggs could do,' you know, so I said 'hey if you're so smart why don't you try...'
Luke: ...yeah, and Fixer just pretended it never happened. Course, my Skyhopper's busted up pretty bad.
Biggs: Oh, I'm sure that made your uncle happy.
Luke: You have no idea. I'm grounded for the rest of the season.
Biggs: Nah, nah, you oughtta take it a little easier, Luke. I mean even if you are the hottest gully jumper this side of Mos Eisley, you keep it up buddy and one day, whammo, you'll be nothing but a dark smear on a canyon wall.
Luke: Hey, why'd you want me to come out to Beggar's Canyon anyway?
Biggs: Like I said, old times' sake. I mean, who knows when I'll be back this way, right?
Luke: I guess. Well, there it is, the old stone needle. You know, you can see practically the whole canyon from this part of the rim.
Biggs: Yeah. Hah, I don't know how I lived through all the crazy stunts we pulled down here.
Luke: I remember some of those. Boy, if we had the 'hopper now we could give those womp rats a surprise.
Biggs: Oh sorry, I am now valuable property. Keeping in mind the expense of cadet training, all graduates shall refrain from unnecessary risk-taking.
Luke: You? They happen to know how many stabilizer veins you bent up on the back stretch down there? Or how about the time you almost wiped out the stone needle?
Biggs: I figured it was better not to mention those to my piloting instructors.
Luke: Boy, it hasn't been the same since you left Biggs. It's been so... quiet.
Biggs: Hah, I'll bet.
Luke: Yeah, you were always number one around here, Biggs. You were the one who made things happen.
Biggs: Well it's a big galaxy, Luke. At the Academy, everybody was number one back where they came from. All of a sudden I was just a face in the crowd.
Luke: Yeah, but you made it, Biggs. You're going to see all those places we used to talk about.
Biggs: Yeah. Luke, did you ever wonder why we're friends?
Luke: Huh?
Biggs: The rest of them, back at Anchorhead, they'll never leave Tatooine. Maybe never get as far as Mos Eisley. Have you ever thought about that?
Luke: Well, not exactly like that I haven't.
Biggs: Fixer's just smart enough to know he's better off being a big noise in a small room. Camie's dumb enough to think she's made the prize catch hereabouts, and Windy's nothing but a follower and Deak's the follower of a follower.
Luke: But- what are you saying, Biggs?
Biggs: You will make it off Tatooine, Luke. And they know it. That's why they won't accept you.
Luke: Huh. Well, they're not so bad, I don't really mind them.
Biggs: Then how come you work so hard at being the hottest pilot around, huh? Hey-- did you see that? Off in the far side of the canyon.
Luke: What, where-- Sand People!
Biggs: You got your macros?
Luke: Yeah, right here.
Biggs: Yep, three banthas and it looks like five Tusken Raiders.
Luke: Yeah?
Biggs: They're moving out towards... the wastes.
Luke: Hey I'm supposed to keep a watch out for them at the farm, my uncle said that there have been some sightings around here, I should get back.
Biggs: I don't think its anything to worry about.
Luke: Well, that's a little excitement for your visit.
Biggs: You only think this planet's boring because you've never been anywhere else, Luke. Luke, I didn't-- I didn't come home just for a visit. If I don't come back, I wanted somebody to know.
Luke: What? Honestly, Biggs, will you stop being so secretive.
Biggs: Luke, I made some friends at the Academy. And one of them will be on the Rand Ecliptic with me. At our first port of call in the inner systems, we're going to jump ship and join the Rebel Alliance!
Luke: But that's crazy! You could wander around forever trying to find them-- look, the Empire can't even find them.
Biggs: Well if we don't find the rebels then we're going to do what we can on our own! I'm not hanging around to get drafted into the Imperial Starfleet. The rebellion's spreading, Luke, and I want to be on the side I believe in!
Luke: Yeah, and I'm stuck here.
Biggs: What? I thought you were going to the Academy next year.
Luke: I had to cancel my application. You know, the Sand People acting up again.
Biggs: C'mon, Luke! Your uncle could hold off a whole Tusken raiding party with one blaster. One of these days, buddy, you gotta separate what seems important from what is!
Luke: But the farm's just about to start paying off. Look, Uncle Owen needs me one more season. Biggs, I can't just run out on him and Aunt Beru now.
Biggs: Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru, first it was Sand People and now it's the crop. Meanwhile, your application's been cancelled, Luke! Cancelled! Luke, listen to me. Your uncle uses that 'I fed you and brought you up' line to keep you here, can't you see that?
Luke: Biggs! My aunt and uncle the only family I've got, they're all I've got! And I don't care what you or anybody else thinks about me, I can't let anything happen to those two.
Biggs: Luke, I didn't mean-
Luke: Oh go on, find your rebellion! You don't think I'd like to leave? You think I like staying behind?
Biggs: I never thought that, Luke.
Luke: Well, that's how it sounded.
Luke: Here, I'll let you off by the power station.
Biggs: Thanks for the ride, Luke.
Luke: Yeah. Sure.
Biggs: Luke. Luke, I had a friend at the Academy. He used to help me through, the way I-- the way I used to help you. Just before graduation, I heard he got picked up during a round of Rebel suspects, and they said he died in interrogation.
Luke: You've changed, Biggs. You've changed a lot.
Biggs: I have been doing some thinking, Luke. But, uh-- but you're the same as ever. Hey, tell me, are you still keeping a lookout for that dream girl you used to talk about?
Luke: Hah, I'll know her if she passes by. Biggs, I'm sorry about what I said back there.
Biggs: Yeah me too. Hey, just, let's forget it.
Luke: Yeah. Will you be around long?
Biggs: No, I'm leaving on the morning shuttle.
Luke: Looks like there's a wind kicking up.
Biggs: Hm. Wind's rising all over the Empire, Luke. Even Tatooine will feel it. Sooner or later.
Luke: I guess... I won't be seeing you for a while.
Biggs: Oh, maybe someday. I'll be watching for you.
Luke: Listen, next season, I'm going to be going to the Academy for sure! No, I am, I am! Take care of yourself.
Biggs: So long, Luke.
Luke: Biggs?
Biggs: Yeah?
Luke: Do you really think those ships out there were just freighters?
Biggs: Well, not if you say they were firing, hotshot.

jaina solo is mary sue
What an interesting assertion to leave in my inbox! Especially because without context it’s not entirely clear whether that’s meant to be a question (do I think Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue?) or a challenge (e.g. “Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue, prove me wrong”).
And, assuming we conclude this statement is true, is that supposed to be a bad thing? If Jaina is a Mary Sue, am I not allowed to like her as a character? Or is she supposed to be my guilty pleasure or something if I do like her? (I don’t really have guilty pleasures, anyway, I prefer just to have pleasures.) I do have lots of thoughts, so thank you in advance, dear Anon, for the ask and the opportunity to share them.
At this point I will freely admit that I have not read a ton of Jaina Solo stuff in Legends. A lot of Wookieepedia articles and fics in which she appears, yes, a lot of the actual books in which she appears, no. I do have a version of the character that I put into my Sequel Trilogy fix-it fic series, but she has some significant differences from her Legends canon counterpart (a couple big ones being that her turned-to-the-Dark-Side brother isn’t her twin, and she’s the younger sister by quite a lot).
However, being around the fandom one does glean some general opinions, so I’ll take a shot at talking about “Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue.” Buckle up, I’m going to be very wordy here.
I really recommend the @thisweekinfandomhistory podcast episode they did on the concept of “the Mary Sue” — it’s a great rundown of where the concept came from, how it evolved over time, how it has affected fanfiction writing as well as mainstream characters in books, TV, and film, and some of the not-so-subtle ways it’s been used to police how we write or how we enjoy femme-presenting characters. The general concept of the Mary Sue is of a (almost always female) character who is sort of a blatant self-insert, where they have all kinds of amazing skills or powers, and are so attractive that everyone is in love with them or wants to be their friend, and they’re friends with all the main characters, and the story sort of starts being about how awesome they are, they saved the day and everyone clapped. The idea is that writing a Mary Sue into your story makes your story terrible and boring and they’re just a flat character who sucks. I think.
So — Jaina Solo. In Legends canon she is:
Strongly connected to main characters we know and love (eldest child and only daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa and niece of Luke Skywalker)
Extremely strong in the Force and a Jedi with the crazy Skywalker-brand Force lineage
An incredible pilot and very mechanically savvy as well (also probably helped out by the whole extremely-Force-sensitive thing as well as having at least two incredible pilots in the family)
Able to speak Shryiiwook (makes sense given that Chewie is her father’s best friend, has a life debt to her father, and is pretty much part of the family)
Very attractive (some combo of her mother’s and her father’s good looks, probably more so Leia’s)
Everyone is in love with her (there is an ongoing war among various love interests, including Jagged Fel, Zekk, and Kyp Durron, plus Ta’Chume once tried to marry her off to Isolder when his wife (also the mother of Jaina’s close friend Tenel Ka) was still alive and very much still married to him)
Super-special because of her twin bond with Jacen and being the Sword of the Jedi and having the Vong think she was their trickster goddess
Okay, so there could be some ingredients here that point to Mary Sue for Jaina, particularly the “she’s extremely skilled and the best at all these things” and “everyone is fighting over her affections” business. I would argue the fight of Jaina’s love interests is less about Jaina and more about the fact that in the era many of those books were written, apparently the only way they knew to give women conflict was to a) have them fight with other women (this is a problem they gave Leia a lot too) or b) have them worry about which man they should choose. Or the typical back and forth among authors who had competing love interests and wanted theirs to win. (Side note: Jaina and Tenel Ka should have gotten together at least for a while. Or Jaina should have pulled a Kelly Taylor from 90210 and said “I choose me.”)
Here’s the thing about Jaina having mad skills at multiple things, though. As you can see from most of the bullets above, her skills aren’t just out of the blue so someone could make an overpowered self-insert character. There are solid reasons for those skills. And why do we hear so much about her adventures and her skills? Well, the book series in which adolescent/adult Jaina appears are called Young Jedi Knights and The New Jedi Order. If she’s one of the titular Young Jedi Knights, or a member of the New Jedi Order, she’s one of the beings the book is about! And honestly, however you feel about those series, you’re gonna have a bad time if the whole New Jedi Order series is about Jedi who have no skills and always lose and suck.
Hey, you know who else has a lot of skills and is an excellent pilot and does crazy bonkers things with the Force and often comes and saves the day and has lots of love interests in Legends? Luke Skywalker. Is Luke a Mary Sue? (Well, he’s a man. Being a Mary Sue is apparently reserved for women. So I guess not.)
I don’t think Jaina is a Mary Sue, but let’s say she is and go back to my earlier point: so what?
Women are not exactly featured in the Star Wars universe. My girl Leia is a main character, but there are more women dancing for a Hutt in Return of the Jedi than actually have speaking lines in the original trilogy. (The minuscule number of humans of color in the Star Wars universe is a whole other issue, so blatant that SNL once did a skit about it featuring Lando.)
Maybe we get to have a female character who is beautiful and smart, crazy powerful in the Force, a kickass Jedi, an ace pilot with more kills at nineteen than several of the Rogues put together, who brings all the boys to the yard. (And probably plenty of beings of other genders, let’s be real.) Who is Han Solo and Leia Organa’s beloved daughter, Luke Skywalker’s beloved niece, Chewbacca’s beloved family, Jacen and Anakin’s beloved sister, Mara Jade’s beloved niece and Jedi apprentice, friend to many. Who struggles with her identity and her purpose, who grieves, who grapples with the Dark Side, who worries about winning peace for the galaxy but ending up alone in her life. Maybe I want to read about and write her adventures — which could, yes, include which being she ends up with romantically. Maybe I put a little of myself in there, or a lot of myself, or what I’d want to be if I had even half the talents she has and lived in the Star Wars universe.
Maybe we get to have a kickass Organa-Solo daughter with a purple lightsaber, as a treat. And maybe we get to have as many treats as we want.
TL;DR: “jaina solo is a mary sue” 1. No, she isn’t. 2. Maybe she is, and maybe that’s okay. Great, even.
Congratulations if you waded through this whole thing, Anon, and thank you for the very intriguing ask!

So I am very behind on The Mandalorian and just saw 3x03 "The Convert" yesterday, and I was wondering if you had any ideas about how the New Republic was framed in that episode? I'm trying to grapple with it, and am not totally sure why we were shown this. I mean, obviously everything with this is intentional from the writers, producers, showrunners, all of them, but I was wondering how other people saw this episode.
Honestly, I just don't have enough faith in Favreau's writing for the show to feel like there's anything there, I genuinely don't know if it was meant to be taken at face value, if it was meant to be thematic of the problems inherent in the foundation of the New Republic, or just Rule of Cool from top to bottom. If the writing were stronger, I might give thought to well, what is the point of Elia Kane's character, what is the point of bringing back Dr. Pershing, what is the point of showing us this program for former Imperials in the New Republic, but given the way season 3 ends, I'm not sure what the point would be. Anything that's introduced in this season ultimately feels pointless and it's just there because the show wants to expand the universe, not because it's relevant to the thematic elements of the show. I think what the show wants is to have all its Rule of Cool stuff (included just because it's awesome to put in a Star Wars show) and to be something of an anthology series, where episodes are devoted to fleshing out everything that's going on in the galaxy around them, to develop stronger ties between the movie trilogies. Except none of the New Republic stuff really seems to go anywhere, it's not relevant to Moff Gideon's story, it's not relevant to Din Djarin's story (like the Order 66 flashback is relevant because it's illustrating Grogu's characterization and where he's at at this point in time and what he's dealing with), and maybe it'll come into relevance in the fourth season, but I'm extremely doubtful. I can't really get a bead on what Favreau's thoughts about the New Republic are, so I can't really figure out the framing, and I've basically stopped trying because what does it even matter? Like, say what you will about George Lucas, that guy knew the story he was telling and the themes he wanted and, when he included a scene, it was with the thought of supporting the central tenets. I think The Mandalorian has always leaned towards adding things in for fun (the things that'll "break the internet", that are included just to break the internet) but it really came to a head this season and now half of the show is just stuff that's happening without any kind of eye towards the structure of a bigger storyline or purpose. Like maybe I'm missing something because I'm so disinterested in whatever this show is trying to achieve, but it really does feel like there just wasn't a purpose to including it, other than that maybe Favreau wanted to try to connect the OT to the ST because he likes writing references to the movies more than developing the structure of his own story. And sometimes you can get away with that, because people like seeing Luke Skywalker and an interlude of him just doing stuff has relevance just because he's the face of the franchise and so much of the heart of the story. But you can't do the same for Dr. Pershing or even the New Republic as a whole, you have to have a point there and I'm not sure there was one.

another thing that i love thinking about is luke and leia post rotj searching for any information possible about their parents
like they have anakin's name but all they know about their mom is what obi-wan told leia when she was 10. there is nothing publicly connecting anakin to padmé in any way other than a professional relationship. nobody who Knew is alive bc i feel like at most ahsoka suspected something was up but didn't know for sure but i am only at s3 of tcw so i Do Not Know. there's the marriage records but those are on naboo and it would probably take quite a bit of digging to find information on the trade federation blockade or even connect anakin's name to that (given that he was. 9.) but then again they could have also found that palpatine was from there (as well as senator amidala who was associated with bail organa, obi-wan kenobi, AND anakin skywalker. hmmmmm) and realized that this planet is maybe Significant, gone there, and found stuff out.
but also while luke's feelings about anakin/vader are pretty clear i think leia's are way more complicated. people like to say that luke is more like his mother and she is more like her father (and that is true) but she more than anything resents everything they discover about anakin while they still have no clue who their mother is. she gets frustrated over wasting time away from establishing the rebellion and only finding information about her father who tortured her, killed hundreds, and destroyed her home. she tells herself she's only doing this to find out who their mother is. meanwhile luke is happy with whatever they find. so it winds up being mostly luke staying motivated and actively doing research and leia pretending she doesn't care but she chips in ideas and comes along because she really is curious but mostly feels bitter about every new discovery (except for those involving obi-wan because she's curious about this man she met like twice who was important enough to her for her to call him her "only hope". i also think at some point they visit ben's house on tatooine to see if it has any clues and ask around and find out about the boonta eve classic and that there used to be some skywalkers that were slaves and that kinda hits luke hard). plus bail and breha were leia's parents and by searching for her birth parents so soon after their deaths she probably feels a bit like she's replacing them.
of course one of the force ghosts could just tell them padmé's name but where's the fun in that. i want them to go on an intragalactic scavenger hunt for their mom only to discover everything about her has been right in front of them this whole time. i think luke probably asks them at one point and yoda says something cryptic about trusting his feelings and then he never tries again

5 6 7 10 for Star Wars violence 👀
OKAY TIME FOR THE VIOLENCE (I don't know how actually violent these opinions are but pretend I am Very Vicious)
5. Worst blorboficiation?
sdfsdifj REGRETTABLY... OBI-WAN.... I love the man but fandom characterizations definitely show some Popular Guy Character Syndrome where it's all about how sad and tormented he is and while I respect that as a lover of tormented men, it is certainly an experience when you're like, reading a CodyWan fic and Cody is comforting Obi-Wan through his tragic past like he's never gone through anything difficult in his life. Also some of Obi-Wan's fun edges are sanded off, he's more generically sassy but considerate of others feelings and kind, etc, and like. He's not UNkind. But this is a man that faked his death and did not tell his emotionally unstable best friend like that was going to do anything but drive Anakin absolutely batshit insane. He watched like ten clones in a row die without a reaction and then the instant a Jedi died they all had to stop for a funeral. He tried to get Luke to kill Vader WITHOUT telling him who he was. He's kind of an idiot and can be kind of an asshole. Let him hurt people's feelings! Let him be socially inept! He is a dipshit not a harmless weep blob!
(This ties in with my desire to see CodyWan fic where they straight up get in a fight but is not ENTIRELY connected to that)
6. Opinion on canon and/or fanon use of the secret child trope? Discuss.
It works for Luke and Leia and I think it should have stayed at that. I'm not a big fan of the Palpatine reveal for Rey but I didn't want her to be a Skywalker either, sometimes you want a main that is Just Some Guy, doesn't need to be a secret child of anyone. In fanon I just REALLY do not like it, partially because it's plugging in a blood relation where it doesn't need to be. The other part is that I have mostly seen it for Obi-Wan and Satine with that Korkie kid and with how utterly repressed those two are at each other I refuse to believe they ever successfully fucked.
7. What is the weakest piece of canon writing?
It feels like cheating to say the sequel trilogy mostly because I never finished it so a thing that I definitely finished and loved but makes no sense - AOC is not the strongest movie but ROTS was like, fully just a series of cool scenes stitched together to approximate a movie. And don't get me wrong, I adore the prequels. But the only one that I think succeeds as a Movie is TPM. ANAKIN'S FALL ESPECIALLY IS NONSENSICAL AS SHIT. Like the underlying motivations are there but they were not pieced into anything resembling a coherent narrative. You have a start point, an end point, and everything in between just kind of jumps around with I think the weakest point being the Tusken Massacre - it's treated more like a sign of Anakin's potential darkness than anything when like. That's a whole village. He killed a whole village and it never comes up again! Lucas apparently didn't consider it that big a deal!
It's to a point where I actually think the massacre can't be addressed from a fully in universe perspective, because there's no actual way to twist it around so that it makes sense for that not to be enough to Make Anakin Fall without breaking the already very loose rules of the universe. Most other Star Wars points I can figure out some kind of justification for how it works in world, but to explain how Anakin wouldn't fall here you just have to kind of confront that Lucas is both not a very good writer and also approached the Tuskens with an incredibly racist viewpoint given that he doesn't appear to see their deaths as fully Counting, unlike the Jedi younglings in ROTS. It's a plot choice that, if treated with the full weight it would narratively deserve, completely unravels the entire rest of the series, the only way to make the storyline of everything else WORK is to take it out or change it so much as to be an entirely different scenario, and I can't think of any other things that fuck it up THAT bad.
10. What’s a ship you've unwillingly come around to?
I think 'unwillingly' is overstating it (but then I rarely DISLIKE a ship, so there's usually not much Unwillingly about it) but I thought Tech/Phee was cute at most until everyone started being Like That about them. Now I want them to kiss and get married onscreen. I hope that she hits that every night. Phee deserves whatever she wants.
Also Anakin/Padme probably counts because I did not actually go into the clone wars watch WANTING to love Anakin but Whoops. WHOOPS. So that meant I got An Affection for the two of them in all their messy stupid as shit glory.

For the ask game, 5, 18, and 30??
(from this ask game)
ahh thank you for sending these in!!
5. first sentence of the fifth paragraph of an unpublished WIP
ok so i have 7 tabs open and all of them are either new chapters or unpublished wips but here is the first sentence of the first tab - and a second sentence for a little bit more context lol:
'Watto has wings, a set that isn’t much to look at but that he’s rather proud of showing off anyway. And because Watto has wings, little Ani cannot, lest he grow up and get ideas.'
(that's wing fic au which i have been meaning to finish and post for forever)
18. If you keep them, share a deleted sentence or paragraph from a published fic
ok so i don't keep my deleted sentences or paragraphs - they are gone with the wind as soon as i don't like them lol BUT i can definitely talk about one of my first draft ideas for a fic that i didn't end up writing which i've definitely talked about before. in foolproof foolhardy, when i started writing what would become the last 2 chapters and the final arc of the story, i was totally sold on the idea that when they're in the ship on the way to their mission they would end up fucking ('to get it out of their system') as a one-time thing and afterwards they can just pretend they don't care about each other at all and the sex would be very angry and bitter except for the moments where they couldn't help but betray their real feelings (aka master skywalker caresses obi-wan's face, obi-wan kisses his pulse, etc etc)
and then during the mission the prince of the planet would be interested in obi-wan in a way that would prove to be Perilous (because obi-wan tries to pretend he can just go back to having fun and sleeping around and so he courts the prince's attention, but it turns out that actually he doesn't want to do that anymore because now he knows how anakin would hold him)
and anakin would do something very dramatic like start a full on war with the planet and or threaten assassination of the prince because hes a jealous lil guy and will use obi-wan's discomfort as cover for his actions without examining the root of the emotions which is in fact love (but twisted)
and then they fuck AGAIN and finally actually talk it all out (but it was already such a long story and that whole mission arc seemed needlessly dramatic when tensions were already high, so they just talked it out the first time they fucked on the ship, which i'm happy with)
30. share a fic you’re especially proud of
ooo interesting question! i definitely feel various amounts of proud of all my fics because of who i was and what i was trying out when i was writing each of them, but i think i'm especially proud of let my love be the knife that implicates me aka the rots compliant fic where obi-wan raises luke on tatooine alone and does as good of a job as he knows how. i just really like the concept of it - where obi-wan deals with his grief by talking about the agony and joy of loving anakin, luke's father, while also still so fresh off of mustafar and the fall of the Jedi, knowing he can only talk about this now because when luke is old enough to remember he shouldn't bear the weight of his secrets....only for luke to remember not the words themselves (about the empire, about sidious, about anakin's betrayal) but the emotion behind them, which was almost always love.
it's a sad fic but it's not so sad that i think it's unreadable and i really am so proud of a lot of the phrases and the pacing of it! mostly because i almost always avoid anything even resembling 'canon compliant' and so this was a really big moment for me lol

It gets harder every year
Star Wars, 2050 words, Luke Skywalker, Ezra Bridger Luke has acquired a Mandalorian and is maybe panicking a little. It's fine. He nows a guy. Set in a universe where Ezra wound up in the Chiss Ascendancy post-Rebels and eventually he and Luke became like. Space internet friends. Don't worry about it. *
Luke Skywalker, pinnacle of Jedi calm and patience, only does four laps around the school while he waits for his comm signal to work its way through seven layers of encryption and a long string of relay nodes stretching across lightyears, vast and unknowable, between his current location and his target.
“No,” Laezra says as soon as he picks up. His little hologram is blurry and half a second out of sync with the audio, but Luke can still see the way his hair is flattened on one side and standing straight up on the other, and he's holding the comm in such a way that his (probably bare) chest is out of frame. There is, perhaps, a timezone issue Luke should have taken into account.
“You're so rude,” Luke says. “This could be an emergency.”
“Is it?”
“The point is that it could be. And you, my only peer, my only fellow Force user, you who stand in brotherhood with me against a harsh and uncaring universe–”
“Your sister exists and is literally a princess”
“What value does the royal title hold within the forced diaspora, really? Also the last time I asked if she wanted to meditate she threatened to tell someone I don't pay taxes.”
“That's an actual criminal crime, for the record. What kind of example are you setting for your students?”
“I have two students,” Luke says. “One of whom I'm related to. Besides, didn't you meet your master in the middle of a criminal crime?”
“It's not a crime if it pisses off the Empire,” Laezra says automatically, then, “Luke, please. I am so tired. There was a whole... thing. I haven't slept in my own bed for three weeks. My student had to use her lightsaber in actual combat for the first time. I had to side with my commanding officer against my mentor, even though the asshole was absolutely in the right, and I'm feeling some kinda way about it. Sometimes preemptive action is good, actually, but don’t tell anybody I said that.”
“Sorry,” says Luke. “Is she ok? Your student, I mean.” Laezra still refuses to tell Luke the name of his or his fellow Navigator Jedi's student, and wierd trust issues aside, it makes conversation grammatically difficult sometimes.
“Yeah. We're ok. We were both doing twelve hour shifts on the way home, though, because I guess ‘we aren’t Sky Walkers’ doesn’t mean ‘we aren’t Sky Walkers’ when the ship’s actual Sky Walker is made of germs and fever and barf. Then it becomes ‘jump-by-jump is so inefficient, this information is so critical, everybody’s so tired. Have you ever had the experience of getting nosebleed blood crusted in your beard? BecauseI don’t recommend it.”
Between Leia and Laezra, Luke knows enough classified information to sink two major governments. Or at least inconvenience them a lot.
"Ok, ok, ok," Luke decides he's going to sit down on the grass, and only realises it’s still wet from the afternoon rainstorm once his pants are already soaked. “So. Listen. You know things.”
“Wild,” Laezra says flatly. “Is this how you write report cards at your school?”
Luke glares down at the little hologram. “You know things about Mandalorians,” he clarifies. He decides he's gonna stand back up, and while he's at it he may as well do a few more laps.
“I-- Luke. Luke you can't tell me I'm the only person you know who knows a Mandalorian. Who I am, just so we're super clear, still on pretty shaky footing with, given my whole... everything.”
Luke waves this off. He is very over Laezra having fucked off on actual Purrgils, never to return, less than a year before Luke discovered he was a space wizard and could have really desperately used some support in that from someone who wasn't a hundred years old and a friend of his father's. It's so fine. He definitely doesn't lie awake imagining being one half of a pair of Jedi, back when the Rebellion had felt huge and overwhelming and kind of terrifying. Some people blow up a massive space station/doomsday weapon full of living beings (twice) and hold their evil dad in their arms while he dies. Some people ride away in a burst of martyrdom on their bffs the legendary space whales. Some people live alone but for two little kids in the ruins of a temple that they call a school, desperately trying to rebuild an entire religious and cultural institution from barely legible texts and ghosts. Some people live in another galaxy and embark on exciting new projects for an alien government where they get to research brand new Force techniques and go on adventures and live in an apartment where they can just walk across the street and buy fresh pastries whenever they want to.
Jedi do not feel envy. Jedi do not feel resentment. Jedi are always well aware that the grass is perpetually greener.
“I have a Mandalorian now,” Luke says, instead of any of this.
“Like, you... have obtained one? Are you feeding them? They need so much exercise, I cannot emphasise this enough.”
Luke puts his comm on the ground so he can drop his face into his hands. “He gave me? His kid? But also I think he's the king of the Mandalorians, and he keeps stopping by for visits, and I don't want to mess up.”
“This is so much,” Laezra says. “This is so much. Luke Skywalker, are you crushing on the Mand’alor?”
“Calling you was a mistake,” Luke says.
“Calling me was the opposite of a mistake, oh my God. What House? What Clan? I ask like the answer will mean anything to me, but like..... it might.”
“His name's Din,” Luke says. “I don't know if I'm supposed to tell people that.”
“And have you and Din..... you know?”
“He doesn't take his helmet off,” Luke says, helplessly. “Except once, and I think that was... not ideal. For him.”
“But was it ideal for you– sorry, sorry. Ok. Was he an Academy kid?”
“I don't think so,” Luke says. “He barely knew anything about the war. He didn't know who I was. He has a lightsaber that he really doesn't want to have, though.”
“Wait. Wait. So he's like.... the real deal. You're having sexy parent/teacher interviews with the legit Mand’alor.”
“I'm not having sexy anything with anybody,” Luke says.
“That's so sad, my guy. But hey, keep on trucking. I bet you can seduce him with your farmboy charms.”
“His son eats frogs,” says Luke. “I caught him a whole bucket full to take with him last time Din came to take him on a trip.”
“You just. ...handed the Mand’alor a bucket of frogs and his kid? ‘Have a good time, gang!’ You’re my very favourite little guy, Luke.”
“I think most of them escaped inside his ship,” Luke admits. “Which, actually, let me tell you about his kriffing ship–”
“Why am I perpetually surrounded by pilots? Luke, look at me. Look me in the eye. I don't care about his ship. Tell me about his cute kid or his dick or the actual ass Darksaber. Do not tell me about his ship.”
“It's very bad, though. It’s a bad ship and he should feel bad about it, he lets his child ride around in it, and I know for a fact his fuel injectors were recalled–”
“So were you hoping I'd... know the Mando dating cheat codes, or something?” Laezra says loudly.
Luke frowns. “I want to get to know him as a person. I'm his son's teacher. It'd be inappropriate for me to ... do anything. I'm just hoping I can maybe be a bit more culturally sensitive.”
Luke's only ever seen one propper, full-colour picture of Laezra that isn't a blue light holocall; there’s a holo on General Syndulla’s desk of a grinning teenager, limbs gawky and eyes that reminded Luke of the feral tookas he was never allowed to take home during trips into town as a kid. Even so, it's easy for Luke to picture the other man sitting in the dark of his bedroom, shoving his hands back through his hair as he groans. Luke wonders if he's the kind of person who needs to have everything unpacked and in its place when he comes home from a mission, or if he's more the 'dump bag and clothes on floor, fall face first onto nearest flat surface' type. It's probably a weird thing to wonder, but it's the sort of thing Luke knows about all his other friends.
“Ok. Luke.” He drops his hands from his hair and leans in close to his comm, so the top half of his face is all Luke sees, weird and disproportionate as the camera tries to compensate. “I bet you've probably been reading a bunch of old Jedi books or scrolls or cave paintings about the danger of attachment. Maybe your ghosts have lectured you. But that's what they are. Ghosts and old writings. You're starting something new. And-- Kanan. My Master. He loved somebody very much, and she loved him back. And he was the best Jedi I can imagine.”
“You can just say it was General Syndulla,” says Luke, who has only ever seen one mention of attachments in the documents he’s recovered, but doesn’t want to devalue what Laezra is trying to tell him.
“Ok, yeah. They loved each other so much, and I never once saw it interfere with Kanan’s dedication to helping others. To making the galaxy a safer, kinder place. If anything I think she made him better. And vice-versa.”
“I just meant,” Luke says carefully, “that I wouldn't want to risk things not working out and Din not wanting to leave his son here anymore. There's nobody else who will train him. But I’ll keep the other stuff in mind.”
“I have so many things I definitely  don't actually want to say to Ahsoka,” Laezra mutters. “But oh boy am I thinking them.”
Luke presses his lips together. He doesn't know if Laezra knows who Vader was when he was a Jedi. Doesn't know if it'd mean anything to him even if he did know. “She's got some pretty compelling reasons for the choices she makes, he says. "I don’t agree with her, but… I mean. Anybody can become dangerous if attachment gets possessive, but you've gotta admit Force users are especially risky.”
“People just keep making bigger guns,” Laezra points out. “How are they any less dangerous?”
“A gun can't get inside your head and change how you feel. It can't make you do things you wouldn't normally do.”
“Ahahaha,” says Laezra, and his hands go back over his face as he leans away from the camera. “You don't need The Force for that one, either.”
Luke winces. “Anyway,” he says, because he knows most people don't actually want to talk about their feelings, even if that seems super counter-intuitive. Whatever. “How do I become friends with the Mand'alor?”
“You keep saying it and it doesn't get any less unhinged. I don't know. You're already taking care of his kid, and you value family. You're highly skilled in combat. There's really no secret trick to it, just... be a person.”
“I've tried that,” Luke says. “I'm so bad at being a person around him though.”
“Does he like art?” Laezra asks, with a sudden burst of gleeful intensity. “Luke does he like art, this is important. I can tell you so much about art. Do you want to know which chemical combinations are the best for neon colours and also timed explosions? Do you want to know about historical graffiti culture throughout the Outer Rim? Do you want to know how to use the remaining art from the various Mandalorian factions to construct a sociopolitical thesis on their people with a focus on military tactics?”
“You know what," says Luke, "I think I hear the kids calling me.”
“Coward,” Laezra says immediately
“Go back to bed; say hi to your student for me; may The Force be with you bye.”
Laezra is still swearing at him, laughing, when Luke clicks the channel closed.
Luke, with all the dignity befitting the last Jedi Master, opens his notebook and writes 'Ask if he likes art.'

Since I am still salty about this
Every time I see a Reylo post, I get reminded just how much I hated the ending of TROS, which includes the abrupt change in Rey’s character, so here’s rant & some lists/meta.
Tumblr media
I am still very annoyed by Rey's reaction to Ben' death, so here’s a list of 5 times Rey was grieving or was at least extremely concerned about someone’s well-being vs. TROS ending. The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker are all there. Daisy Ridley is an amazing actress, and this has nothing to do with her.
I am also including a second list of all the times Rey expressed concern and compassion for Ben, almost all of which were more emotionally intense and satisfying than her reaction to his death.
Rewatching all these scenes has reminded me what a sweet character Rey is; she expresses her emotions so easily and is really in touch with her feelings. The ending of TROS is so out of character for her. Making these lists has also reminded me just how frequently Rey experienced tragedy over the course of the three movies.
I wish Ben lived, of course.
Please keep in mind that a good part of this post talks about character deaths in Star Wars, so please proceed with caution. You might find the content triggering; I have used all the trigger warnings/“tw” tags that I could think of.
Let’s go.
1-2 - TFA
1. Han dies
At this point, Rey barely knows Han (I think she has known him for exactly one day here), and still, this is her reaction to him being stabbed/thrown off the bridge. She gets easily attached to people and that she cares deeply. Rey yells, she cries.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, her grief lasts in TFA - this is her returning to the Resistance base after Han’s death:
Tumblr media
For contrast, here is Rey returning to the Resistance base after Ben Solo’s death; they had known each other for some time and had a very complex relationship, where they were both vulnerable with each other/bonded through the Force, saved each other’s lives multiple times, and were in love/attracted to each other:
Tumblr media
It’s almost scary how quickly she gets over the whole thing.
2. Finn get injured
This scene lasts for a a pretty long time - unlike the segment where Ben disappears/dies and Rey is alone. When it comes to the emotional reaction, while you can argue that Rey is aware that she may die as well (the planet is collapsing), and that that adds to her sadness and concern, it’s still pretty clear that she cares about Finn deeply. She is again crying, and she also starts hugging him almost immediately after she finds him passed out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus - we can feel the despair in this shot of the gloomy forest:
Tumblr media
There was nothing to even symbolically indicate Rey’s profound sadness/loneliness/despair after Ben dies. She does end up alone in a desert, but this is presented both as a happy event and unrelated to her Force dyad soulmate dying. The return to the desert was also awful, but that’s a rant for another time.
This is also a beautiful and very dramatic shot:
Tumblr media
This TFA scene would make me think that Rey cares more about Finn, even after knowing him for a very short time and very superficially, than she does about Ben at the end of the trilogy, if I were to compare her “shrug emoji” reaction to this one. However, I would assume that she cares about someone that she shares a connection that spans across space and time and that she is in love with, and a person she met that day, who is admittedly very likeable and who has helped her, in equal measure, at least.
Like with Han, this is Rey still being concerned after they get back to the Resistance base; she is reaching out to see if Finn is alright:
Tumblr media
3 - TLJ
3. Luke’s death
Luke dies in this one. Rey talks about it with Leia, and says that it was peaceful and purposeful, which I believe is meant to, in part, explain why they are both not grieving more than this:
Tumblr media
Please keep in mind that what I say in this paragraph is completely within the confines of the movies/the narrative and fantasy - it does not apply to real life. I guess that something along those lines could be applied to Ben’s death in TROS - that it was with a purpose - saving Rey. However, I just cannot compare Luke - who had a much longer life and a much less tormented existence overall, and who sacrificed himself to “right the wrong that he did”, which was “creating Kylo Ren” in the first place - dying to save the Resistance, to his nephew dying after he knew happiness for probably the first time in his life, after decades of abuse. A digression, but here is Luke vs. Ben, who is shaking, around the time when they made the decision to sacrifice themselves:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TROS had one of the most depressing movie endings I have ever seen.
4-5 - TROS
4. Rey accidentally zaps the ship that she thought Chewbacca was in
I have no idea how close Rey and Chewbacca are, but here’s how she reacts when she is convinced that Chewie is dead:
Tumblr media
5. Leia
Leia dies and Rey senses it in the Force. This is probably the most miserable we ever see Rey. She has just lost her mother figure - it is difficult to watch:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok, now Rey expressing concern for Ben:
1. TFA - planet collapsing
This is a subtle one, and she is either concerned (she left Kylo Ren/Ben to die, injured) or she is intrigued by their meeting and is reflecting on it (some third option is a possibility - for example, she noticed a ship come pick him up):
Tumblr media
2. TLJ - Ben explains to Rey that Luke tried to kill him
She calls him a liar, and while she might also be crying because she is shocked to learn such a thing and is disappointed in Luke, she is clearly sad about the whole thing:
Tumblr media
3. TLJ - Rey is mad that Luke tried to kill Ben
Rey is protective when it comes to the people (and droids) she cares about. You could argue that in this scene she is angry about all the events that stemmed from “Luke creating Kylo Ren”, and that that’s why she is in fight mode. Still, it’s shown that she has developed some feelings for Ben:
Tumblr media
4. TLJ - Rey sees Kylo getting strangled during the Throne room fight:
Tumblr media
5. TLJ - The “you are breaking my heart! You are going down a path that I can't follow” moment:
Tumblr media
6. TROS - Rey healing Ben
While she is still overwhelmed and crying due to Leia’s passing, Rey turns towards Ben (my interpretation is that she is also wondering what his feelings concerning his mother’s death are, due to their strained relationship) and then looks at his wound:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rey informs Ben that she wanted to take his hand after she is done healing him:
Tumblr media
She shifts from grieving for Leia, to grieving the relationship that she could have had with Ben.
7. TROS - Rey realizing Ben has arrived to help her fight Palpatine
Tumblr media
I love this moment ^
I think that all of these moments show that Rey does care about Ben, deeply. These are her reactions to events that are not as final as his death.
And finally - Ben dying:
The way this scene is presented, it really seems that Rey is frowning primarily because she is confused - she doesn’t understand why Ben is acting all weird:
Tumblr media
Rey when she comprehends that Ben is dead:
Tumblr media
That’s it. There is no screaming, crying, trying to hold him, nothing.
And then
Tumblr media
She doesn’t even mention Ben dying to anyone (there is no discussing Luke’s death-type scene). I am presuming that she has to bring it up, and fast, since this is also the Supreme Leader who has just died, she is the only one who knows for certain he is dead, and Rey and all her friends are... politically involved, but this probably happens off-screen then.
I could add that Rey holds a sort of a funeral for Leia and Luke (burying the lightsabers), but that she does not do anything similar for Ben.
If you have made it to the end of the post, please let me know what your thoughts are!
Thanks for reading, This has been therapeutic.
I do not own any of the materials used/any of the characters, entertainment purposes only.

an exercise in "thinking about vague shapes and gestures, how do i flesh that out" that took 4 days longer than i can spare. the companion sketch to the staircase AU scribble that i tinkered with almost every day since Sunday and now it's Friday and i had to tweak the layers 2 minutes ago, so.
seriously though. I really need to stop drawing and actually write like I've been meaning to since last month. get with the program, brain.

Episode 6? What episode 6? I don't know what you're talking about. Din needed help not slicing himself open with the Darksaber and went to the one person who seemed most willing to help.

They have a cheerleader and a snack.
Okay but real talk - I sketched the idea on my phone while waiting in the ER (it was an eventful Tuesday morning - for my mom, I'm all right and so is she!) and had been turning it into a finished doodle when TBOBF ep 6 dropped. Canon can do whatever it wants because I can do whatever I want, too.
P.S. the name of this file is "broad v twunk".

So. I said I wanted to clean up and color one of my sketches and uh. Um. Well. Remembered a post about the "leggy blond" and the whole thing got away from me.
I really need to stop listening to my brain.
Post-S1 cozy warm weekend vibes anyone? *walks into the sea*

"Din needs to do some maintenance on his midlife crisis space bugatti and just happened to be near wherever in the galaxy Luke, Grogu, and Artoo are."
As irritated as I am with how The Book of Boba Fett is being handled, I'm also vibrating with so many thoughts and ideas and cannot draw fast enough. I also have a project with a looming deadline and also, uh, an entire fic to write, if you wanna know how bad I am at self-control.
This doodle came out of some very... spicy thoughts about the Naboo starfighter and negotiating tight spaces. I'm just horribly weak for sleek starships (looking at you, USS Enterprise).

Does anyone feel really burnt out by everything needing to be part of a “Cinematic Universe“ now?
Mainly talking Star Wars and Marvel, but it does feel like everything new HAS to be part of one. I saw someone on twitter after the Mario movie came out who wanted that to have them also make movies for Metroid, Zelda, Kirby, etc, and have that lead up to a Smash Bros crossover movie. And like, why can’t they just make the Zelda or Metroid movie and have them be their own thing instead of being REQUIRED to tie into something else?
But with Star Wars, it is something that made me feel less interested in keeping up with Mando. I was enjoying season 2 as it was happening, but then the deepfake Luke Skywalker showing up at the end to remove all possible tension from that scene with the Dark Troopers, and all of the new show announcements they did afterwards made half of the season feel like an extended pilot for other shows. Book of Boba Fett ended up taking 2 episodes in the middle of the show to just forget about the main character of the show and cut away to what Din was doing instead.
I know a lot of people get into the crossovers and everything, but it feels like the hype for those shows can start to only be about which character from the cartoons or the novels will show up next. That these are just commercials for whatever product will come out in a couple months (definitely something that has made me lose interest in the MCU after Endgame).
I really enjoyed the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons, I wish Star Wars would do more with animation. But I don’t really enjoy feeling like I have to watch all of these different things just to understand one thing. If I am watching an Ant-Man movie, I just want it to be about Ant-Man and the characters related to him instead of being some massive thing for the whole MCU multiverse thing with Kang they have going on.
And going back to Rebels, I also wish the Ahsoka show could’ve been done in animation instead of having to recast the entire returning crew from Rebels for live action.
It all just feels so constricting towards creating interesting and new stories too. Instead of being free to create whatever you want, you have to put in an episode to one of the D+ shows that ties into one of the other new D+ shows that will be out in a few months or one of the movies. Makes it feel like more of a chore keeping up with them too.
Its a big part of why the thing with Wars I have enjoyed the most outside of the new trilogy since Disney took over was the Visions anime shorts. They didn’t have to worry about being tied down by the canon, they didn’t have to connect to each other. It was just creative people playing around with the Star Wars universe and telling standalone stories that were interesting to them.
Done rambling now, don’t know how many people feel the same way as me. But I hope we get more standalone stories.
