I'm rereading the Ascendancy books to make sure I haven't messed any important details up in the Chissezra au, and I can't get over like. Somebody observes that Thrawn has this WIERD habit of actually caring when aliens get attacked. Thrawn opines that he can't be as good a leader as Ar'alani because she sees aliens as people and he sees them as assets, and Thalias and Che'ri basically give him a 'you can do whatever you put your mind to!' pep talk. It just. really makes that seen in the 2017 book where he gets chewed out by the Empire for prioritizing people's lives over resources more heartbreakingly ominous. Like. Here we go.
