Kingdom of Ash Chapter 61
Chapter; Highlights (okay the entire chapter is a highlight)🤣
As requested @mysterylilycheeta I NEED TO SQUEAL IN WYVERN FANGIRL WITH YOU NOW CAUSE OH M GOODNESS THIS CHAPTER ON SO MANY LEVELS I JUST AHAKWIHUHFEJLZXBKEKA
Agony was a song in Lorcan's blood, his bones, his breath.
Every step of the horse, every leap she made over body and debris, sent it ringing afresh. There was no end, no mercy from it. It was all he could do to keep in the saddle, to cling to consciousness.
To keep his arm around Elide.
She had come for him. Had found him, somehow, on this endless battlefield.
His name on her lips had been a summons he could never deny, even when death had held him so gently, nestled beneath all those he'd felled, I, and waited for his last breaths.
And now, charging toward that too-distant keep, so far behind the droves of soldiers and riders racing for the gates, he wondered if these minutes would be his last. Her last.
She had come for him.
Lorcan managed to glance toward the dam on their right. Toward the ruk rider signaling that it was only a matter of minutes until it unleashed hell over the plain.
He didn't know how it had become weakened. Didn't care.
Still Elide kept urging the horse onward, kept them on as straight a path toward the distant keep as possible.
No ruk would come to sweep them up. No, his luck had been spent in surviving this long, in her finding him. His power would do nothing against that water.
The farthest lines of panicked soldiers appeared, and Farasha charged past them.
Elide let out a sob, and he followed the line of her sight.
To the keep gate, still open.
"Faster, Farasha!" She didn't hide the raw terror in her voice, the desperation.
Once the dam broke, it would take less than a minute for the tidal wave to reach them.
She had come for him. She had found him.
The world went quiet. The pain in his body faded into nothing. Into something secondary.
Lorcan slid his other arm around Elide, bringing his mouth close to her ear as he said, "You have to let me go."
Each word was gravelly, his voice strained nearly to the point of uselessness.
Elide didn't shift her focus from the keep ahead. "No."
That gentle quiet flowed around him, clearing the fog of pain and battle. "You have to. You have to, Elide. I'm too heavy-and without my weight, you might make it to the keep in time."
"No." The salt of her tears filled his nose.
Lorcan brushed his mouth over her damp cheek, ignoring the roaring pain in his body. The horse galloped and galloped, as if she might outrace death itself.
"I love you," he whispered in Elide's ear. "I have loved you from the moment you picked up that axe to slay the ilken." Her tears flowed past him in the wind. "And I will be with you ..." His voice broke, but he made himself say the words, the truth in his heart. "I will be with you always."
He was not frightened of what would come for him once he tumbled off the horse. He was not frightened at all, if it meant her reaching the keep.
So Lorcan kissed Elide's cheek again, allowed himself to breathe in her scent one last time. "I love you," he repeated, and began to withdraw his arms from around her waist.
Elide slapped a hand onto his forearm. Dug in her nails, right into his skin, fierce as any ruk.
"No."
There were no tears in her voice. Nothing but solid, unwavering steel.
"No," she said again. The voice of the Lady of Perranth.
Lorcan tried to move his arm, but her grip would not be dislodged.
If he tumbled off the horse, she would go with him.
Together. They would either outrun this or die together.
"Elide-"
But Elide slammed her heels into the horse's sides.
Slammed her heels into the dark flank and screamed, "FLY, FARASHA." She cracked the reins. "FLY, FLY, FLY!"
And gods help her, that horse did.
As if the god that had crafted her filled the mare's lungs with his own breath, Farasha gave a surge of speed.
Faster than the wind. Faster than death.
Farasha cleared the first of the fleeing Darghan cavalry. Passed desperate horses and riders at an all-out gallop for the gates.
Her mighty heart did not falter, even when Lorcan knew it was raging to the point of bursting.
Less than a mile stood between them and the keep.
But a thunderous, groaning crack cleaved the world, echoing off the lake, the mountains.
There was nothing he could do, nothing that brave, unfaltering horse could do, as the dam ruptured.
Rowan made himself stand there, to watch the last moments of the Lady of Perranth and his former commander. It was all he could offer: witnessing their deaths, so he might tell the story to those he encountered. So they would not be forgotten.
The roaring of the oncoming wave became deafening, even from miles away.
Still Elide and Lorcan raced, Farasha passing horse after horse after horse.
Even up here, would they escape the wave's reach? Rowan dared to survey the battlements, to assess if he needed to get the others, needed to get Aelin, to higher ground.
But Aelin was not at his side.
She was not on the battlement at all.
Rowan's heart halted. Simply stopped beating as a ruddy-brown ruk dropped from the skies, spearing for the center of the plain.
Arcas, Borte's ruk. A golden-haired woman dangling from his talons.
Aelin. Aelin was—
Arcas neared the earth, talons splaying.
Aelin hit the ground, rolling, rolling, until she uncoiled to her feet.
Right in the path of that wave.
"Oh gods," Fenrys breathed, seeing her, too.
They all saw her.
The queen on the plain.
The endless wall of water surging for her.
The keep stones began shuddering. Rowan threw out a hand to brace himself, fear like nothing he had known ripping through him as Aelin lifted her arms above her head.
A pillar of fire shot up around her, lifting her hair with it.
The wave roared and roared for her, for the army behind her.
The shaking in the keep was not from the wave.
It was not from that wall of water at all.
Cracks formed in the earth, splintering across it. Spiderwebbing from Aelin.
"The hot springs," Chaol breathed. "The valley floor is full of veins into the earth itself."
Into the burning heart of the world.
The keep shook, more violently this time.
The pillar of fire sucked back into Aelin.
She held out a hand before her, her fist closed.
As if it would halt the wave in its tracks.
He knew then. Either as her mate or carranam, he knew.
"Three months," Rowan breathed.
The others stilled.
"Three months," he said again, his knees wobbling. "She's been making the descent into her power for three months."
Every day she had been with Maeve, bound in iron, she had gone deeper. And she had not tapped too far into that power since they'd freed her because she had kept making the plunge.
To gather up the full might of her magic.
Not for the Lock, not for Erawan.
But for Maeve's death blow.
A few weeks of descent had taken her powers to devastating levels. Three months of it
…
Holy gods. Holy rutting gods.
And when her fire hit the wall of water now towering over her, when they collided —
"GET DOWN!" Rowan bellowed, over the screaming waters. "GET DOWN NOW!"
His companions dropped to the stones, any within earshot doing the same.
Rowan plummeted into his power. Plummeted into it fast and hard, ripping out any remaining shred of magic.
Elide and Lorcan were still too far from the gates. Thousands of soldiers were still too far from the gates as the wave crested above them.
As Aelin opened her hand toward it.
Fire erupted.
Cobalt fire. The raging soul of a flame.
A tidal wave of it.
Taller than the raging waters, it blasted from her, flaring wide.
The wave slammed into it. And where water met a wall of fire, where a thousand years of confinement met three months of it, the world exploded.
Blistering steam, capable of melting flesh from bone, shot across the plain.
With a roar, Rowan threw all that remained of his magic toward the onslaught of steam, a wall of wind that shoved it toward the lake, the mountains.
Still the waters came, breaking against the flames that did not so much as yield an inch.
Maeve's death blow. Spent here, to save the army that might mean Terrasen's salvation. To spare the lives on the plain.
Rowan gritted his teeth, panting against his fraying power. A burnout lurked, deadly close.
The raging wave threw itself over and over and over into the wall of flame.
Rowan didn't see if Elide and Lorcan made it into the keep. If the other soldiers and riders on the plain stopped to gape.
Princess Hasar said, rising beside him, "That power is no blessing."
"Tell that to your soldiers," Fenrys snarled, standing, too.
"I did not mean it that way," Hasar snipped, and awe was indeed stark on her face.
Rowan leaned against the battlements, panting hard as he fought to keep the lethal steam from flowing toward the army. As he cooled and sent it whisking away.
Solid hands slid under his arms, and then Fenrys and Gavriel were there, propping him up between them.
A minute passed. Then another.
The wave began to lower. Still the fire burned.
Rowan's head pounded, his mouth going dry.
Time slipped from him. A coppery tang filled his mouth.
The wave lowered farther, raging waters quieting. Then roaring turned to lapping, rapids into eddies.
Until the wall of flame began to lower, too. Tracking the waters down and down and down. Letting them seep into the cracks of the earth.
Rowan's knees buckled, but he held on to his magic long enough for the steam to lessen.
For it, too, to be calmed.
It filled the plain, turning the world into drifting mist. Blocking the view of the queen in its center.
Then silence. Utter silence.
Fire flickered through the mist, blue turning to gold and red. A muted, throbbing glow.
Rowan spat blood onto the battlement stones, his breath like shards of glass in his throat.
The glowing flames shrank, steam rippling past. Until there was only a slim pillar of fire, veiled in the mist-shrouded plain.
Not a pillar of fire.
But Aelin.
Glowing white-hot. As if she had given herself so wholly to the flame that she had become fire herself.
The Fire-Bringer someone whispered down the battlements.
The mist rippled and billowed, casting her into nothing but a glowing effigy.
The silence turned reverent.
A gentle wind from the north swept down. The veil of mist pulled back, and there she was.
She glowed from within. Glowed golden, tendrils of her hair floating on a phantom wind.
"Mala's Heir," Yrene breathed.
Down on the plain, Elide and Lorcan had halted.
The wind pushed away more of the drifting mist, clearing the land beyond Aelin.
And where that mighty, lethal wave had loomed, where death had charged toward them, nothing remained at all.
For three months, she had sung to the darkness and the flame, and they had sung back.
For three months, she had burrowed so deep inside her power that she had plundered undiscovered depths. While Maeve and Cairn had worked on her, she had delved. Never letting them know what she mined, what she gathered to her, day by day by day.
A death blow. One to wipe a dark queen from the earth forever.
She'd kept that power coiled in herself even after she'd been freed from the irons. Had struggled to keep it down these weeks, the strain enormous. Some days, it had been easier to barely speak. Some days, swaggering arrogance had been her key to ignoring it.
Yet when she had seen that wave, when she had seen Elide and Lorcan choosing death together, when she had seen the army that might save Terrasen, she'd known. She'd felt the fire sleeping under this city, and knew they had come here for a reason.
She had come here for this reason.
A river still flowed from the dam, harmless and small, wending toward the lake.
Nothing more.
Aelin lifted a glowing hand before her as blessed, cooling emptiness filled her at last.
Slowly, starting from her fingertips, the glow faded.
As if she were forged anew, forged back into her body.
Back into Aelin.
Clarity, sharp and crystal clear, filled its wake. As if she could see again, breathe again.
Inch by inch, the golden glow faded into skin and bone. Into a woman once more.
Already, a white-tailed hawk launched skyward.
But as the last of the glow faded, disappearing out through her toes, Aelin fell to her knees.
Fell to her knees in the utter silence of the world, and curled onto her side.
She had the vague sense of strong, familiar arms scooping her up. Of being carried onto a broad feathery back, still in those arms.
Of soaring through the skies, the last of the mist rippling away into the afternoon sun.
And then sweet darkness.

would you like to talk about how bad the mha ending was hella
as much as i would love to give like. a comprehensive response i genuinely dont think i can get my words together just yet without it being a constant unintelligble stream of 'AND ANOTHER THING-' and bc it's become quite torn in the fandom on if the chapter was good or bad i want like. an actual coherent response here. so i will reblog this if/when i can word it but know IM NOT FUCKING HAPPY
#paragraphs and paragraphs about the villains' endings alone. hawks hpsc president. midoriya's ending#the fact hero society is barely changed and the changes that do happen feel very much TELLING the reader it happened#as opposed to actually showing us how society changed on it. this is smthn ik people will argue w me about#bc yes it was a 400+ chapter manga arguably showing us how society changed but like. did it actually show that#like do u honestly think any community would watch televised battles between TEENAGERS and bad guys#and have the majority of them go 'gah! i cant help but sympathise with the bad guy who just suckerpunched child extra no.28!'#so like. why are they all suddenly on board with massive systemic reinvention. where's the rage where's the bitterness#this wasn't a story on showing the villains as redeemable and working towards society sympathising with them#and slowly painfully coming to a conclusion where japan was ready to change as a COLLECTIVE#this was a story of showing a group of redeemable villains (first step CHECK) getting DEFEATED IN BATTLE#THEY ALL FUCKING DIED EXCEPT SPINNER AND PRESUMABLY COMPRESS#WE DONT EVEN FUCKING KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO DABI AT THE END ONLY THAT HE WAS PUT IN THE EXACT SAME POSITION#HE WAS IN WHEN HE WOKE UP FROM HIS COMA AND DABI WAS BORN. 'DABI' AS A PERSONA MEANT NOTHING#we still have an abuser who didn't come to justice. we still have the corrupt government body now being led by the guy they trafficked#and abused and conditioned into the perfect soldier. do u think maybe his opinions are a little biased in regards to that gov. body#maybe. perhaps. slightly. and we still have hero charts!!!!!! every kid in the last chap is still obsessed w becoming a hero!!!!#and dont get me STARTEDDDDDDDDD on midoriya being a teacher. 'i think it's cute he finally gets a life of peace 🥺#this way he can help the next generation directly 🥺' womp to the fucking womp he was supposed to be the world's no.1 hero#he barely sees his friends anymore. 'it's realistic to adulthood!' i dont want realism in my superpowered teen and up manga#put them in the avengers mansion NOW#so as you can see i waffled regardless of saying i specifically wasn't gonna do that and some of these points bother me more than others#with some being personal I Didn't Like It and some being i genuinely truly believe it to be bad writing#but my summary is mha ultimately felt like a story where a group of individuals unlearned (eh) the beliefs of a toxic society#and tried to save the people that society failed and then they themselves DID NOT FUCKING SAVE THEM#(i have a hit on the redemption via death trope on the dark web for ten bajillion pounds)#and while yeah that isn't objectively an evil story to tell i think 1) it was done poorly#and 2) isn't what a lot of people believed the premise to be nor what i think horikoshi himself was trying to write#ask#mha spoilers#mha

in celebration of landoscar breaching top 10 pairings in formula on ao3, have a tiny snippet of a coming fanfic:
“You knew?” Lando screeched. “Well, yeah.” At Lando’s flummoxed expression, Oscar continued, a grin creeping at the corners of his mouth. “You were trying to court me, Lando.” “I didn’t think you realised.” Lando looked away, gaze flickering into the copse of trees that bordered the edge of the garden. Oscar bumped his shoulder, and Lando met his eyes for a brief moment. Oscar’s cheeks were pink. “It’s- well, you didn’t exactly say anything, did you?” “I didn’t,” Oscar agreed, looking down into his lap. His hands twitched slightly, a nervous gesture. Lando pressed the side of his cheek against Oscar’s shoulder, rubbing against it. He felt Oscar visibly relax under his touch. “I didn’t want to pressure you.” Oh. “But I was trying to court you!” “It wasn’t that I didn’t want you.” Oscar’s voice was steady. Despite that, Lando startled at the words. He turned to look at Oscar, seeing the other look more flushed than he’d ever seen him. “God, Lando- I want you more than anything. But I didn’t want you to go with it because I’m an alpha.” “You’re not like them.” Lando reached out a careful hand, taking Oscar’s in his. “You haven’t done anything to pressure me - you haven’t even commanded me-” Oscar recoiled at those words. “I wouldn’t command you. That’s to save someone’s life, not for control. God, it’s- I wouldn’t.”
#first time writing f1 fic AND it's my first time writing omegaverse#go big or go home i guess!#also this is like chapter 15 of 22. so! though i only have first two chapters fully written in reality#but soon! watch this space!#formula 1#fanfic#lando norris#oscar piastri#landoscar

so. I've been reading some posts on the jedi order tag AND i won't talk about my opinion on "are jedi good or bad discourse" BUT i wanna point out some lore to everyone who's complaining about the jedi taking kids into their order: (in the EU) it wasn't always like this.
if you take swtor era (more than 3000 years before the prequels) there were many jedi who joined at an older age. like, for example there was a guy who broke his engagement to become one. most jedi remember their families because they were old enough when they decided to go.
THEN in darth bane's book trilogy (circa 1000 yesrs before the prequels) there is a passage where two sith lords are talking about taking bane, already an adult, to study at korriban. one doubted him because he was too old, ans the other told him he sounded like a jedi, and that ONE DAY jedi will have to accept only kids into their ranks if they really want to find "pure" people that can learn their lessons quicker.
one day!! so it wasn't always like that!! the ongoing wars with the sith, who corrupted and killed many of them, had pressured them into taking always younger people into their ranks.
also, consider a thing that this video explains super well: training to become a jedi is not like exercising, because there is a transformative lesson at the end of the training that changes everything. you can't just do as much as you can, but not finish.
the transformative lesson, as the video explains, is that through the force, everything is the same - from rocks and ships to life and death. at the end of the training you have to understand this fundamental truth.
yoda says "you have to unlearn what you have learned". during times where they were constantly killed off or corrupted by the dark side (and if you haven't learned this lesson you are more susceptible to this corrupting), younger people were taken in to actually finish their training (a training that was ultimately about being a good person AND that you could leave at any point if you weren't sold on that, too)
(remember that for the sith failure = death. like. that was the alternative for force sensitive kids. it's not like sith had any moral problem with taking kids away without consent. sith don't have moral problems: they believe that them being stronger in the force means they can do whatever they want as long as their strong enough to go and do it. there are MANY passages in many different star wars stories, even in different mediums, that say this out loud)
AND (this is more of a critical thought than just stating the lore) the fact that they started doing it out of necessity doesn't mean it's 100% good BUT you know. the whole set up of the prequels is that we're starting off the story in a period of crisis and decadence all around. most of the systems of the times were about to fall. OF COURSE they had problems. if they didn't, we wouldn't have the story to begin with.
that doesn't automatically mean jedi = bad and sith are better, tho. you wouldn't take the last, chaotic and decadent period to jugde something, would you? it's like deciding that the athenian democracy sucked because people at the times of Demosthenes failed at recognizing the new schemes in which the world was evolving into, and still believed that their city would be important as it had been in the previous century. They just didn't fucking expect the Macedons would conquer half the world known and more, and have the subsequent political power. Still, their experiences in the 5th century with democracy were very good, even better than ours on many fronts, if you contextualize a little. the jedi had flaws, and most importantly, they didn't fucking know the future and everything that ever happened, ever, so they made mistakes. that doesn't automatically make the system ill, or bad, or not-working. systems can have setbacks when the world changes. (just like athenian democracy had one when they lost the empire that was funding the democracy. they even had a tyranny for a while and then fixed the problems. that doesn't diminish retrospectively their democracy)
#this is longer than i expected it to be OPS. i wrote it quickly in one go so if there are any mistakes or some unclear parts. let me know!#i think it's quite clear from the second part that i am clearly pro-jedi and will always be. BUT i love sith lore also. it's a cool#universe to explore guys!! you can enjoy the bad guys even if they're fucked up u know? no one will judge you. you don't need to twist them#to make them “the good guys actually” (looks over at the acolyte's creators)#little note on the acolyte: MAN I SO WISHED THEY WOULD'VE WENT WITH SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THE FIRST CHAPTERS OF THE BANE TRILOGY#it could've been so fucking good. ugh. I'll forever be grieving for all the Disney+ projects (except andor; mando s1 probably and rebels)#(YES EVEN TCW S7!! some of it wasn't so good. the last 4 episodes were definitely very cool even if they had problems like the rest of tcw.#but. the tags are not the right place to discuss this so OPS i don't even know why I'm talking about it here. ANYWAY BYE)#star wars#sw#jedi order#star wars prequels#the phantom menace#attack of the clones#revenge of the sith#pro jedi#darth bane trilogy#star wars the old republic#ALSO GUYS PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO IT'S AMAZING!!!! it's really really beautiful and doesn't consider the prequels so. even those who don't#like the jedi in the prequels can enjoy that i believe. really it's very well done and uses ONLY the original movies as sources. it's great#g posting

Why did Dazai put his hand on Chuuya's forearm?
(ID in alt)
because when someone's choking you, you grab their WRIST, to put the pressure from your throat, not their forearm. (wise words from this video. i actually did research for that. what's more is that at first Dazai did put his hand on Chuuya's wrist but changed it a panel later. he could've put it lower on the glove but he didn't do that and instead had it on his forearm until Chuuya punched him. also idc if he's not really choking Dazai bc even so for sb who hates pain this cannot be comfortable. also Chuuya why are you doing that if you don't wanna actually hurt him huh?).
and the way Dazai's touch can't even be called a grab bc it's so light... this man really just wanted to touch Chuuya's skin - otherwise he'd have gone for his wrist (which is gloved)...
(ID in alt)
and an additional thing that's probably me overanalyzing but oh well:
i know that in the 2nd pic, after their fight with Lovecraft, the touch was needed, but it's interesting how Dazai touches Chuuya at the very same place that he did in the PM's basements. let's say that's where he would touch him while nullifiying corruption most times. soo imagine that the Dazai from the PM prison scene touched Chuuya there - so lightly, as if checking if he can still do it - as a way of asking Chuuya if he still trusted him with corruption and their partnership. that touch holds memories of so many of the double black's battles and, most importantly, of the trust that used to be - and maybe still is, that's what Dazai's checking (and what will be confirmed during the fight with Lovecraft) - between them.
#hahahahahha they make me unwell#(btw I watched some other videos too and in most other martial arts the wrists are where you grab as well)#I'm not done abt the 1st pic actually#bc first of all we can't see his eyes and that's an important thing in manga (cough cough CHAPTER 101) but we know he's looking at chuuya#who's really pissed#so maybe that touch is also supposed to put Chuuya's mind at ease? at least a bit#bc not only is it Dazai's touch but also it's THAT part of his forearm#bsd#bungou stray dogs#soukoku#god no also the fact that Chuuya's forearms are bare but Dazai's are covered#but it's the opposite with their hands#bsd chuuya#bsd dazai#skk#bsd 11

BNHA Ch. 429
So, I guess Toga is dead, and people are losing it.
I get why people liked her--she was actually queer, being pan/bisexual. She was representation for them and that's rare in shonen manga. But here's the thing--she was bad representation at best and insulting at worst. Nor do I think she was made queer because Hori really wanted to represent a queer girl. Himiko was always the author's poorly hidden fetish--she just was. She liked girls as much as boys because Hori wanted to draw a girl touching sexually on another girl. You can see this in how he draws her and Ochako in solo pics together.
I mean, people seem to understand this when it comes to Momo and her outfit being overly sexual or that both Himiko and Hagakure's Quirks either leave them naked or they have to be naked to use them. These are excuses to draw girls in a sexual manner. Himiko being into other girls is the same thing and that's the kindest interpretation.
Given how Himiko acts and her Quirk being heavily coded sexual desire, and therefore her use of it against someone unwilling being sexual assault, it could just being playing into harmful stereotypes of predatory gays.
As a queer person myself I just found Toga insulting. She was designed to be overly sexual and give the male author a female character that he could draw being suggestive with his other female characters. When he did flesh out her character, her backstory was eventually the trope/fear of straight people, that gay people will be so overcome with their lust that they end up sexually assaulting them.
In the end Ochako accepts this part of Toga and says she'll giver her blood forever, but as much as a lot of readers took that that as some deep lesbian confession, for me it really fell flat. Hori never really gave any of the main kids time to actually learn about their villain or show how that changed their minds toward them. Shoto only works because Touya is his brother (even though he admits he barely remembers him). But Ochako goes from not thinking of Toga at all pre-first war, to one thought about her during her speech, to suddenly caring about her so much she--given how Toga's quirk is coded, is willing to essentially fulfill Toga's kink for the rest of their lives.
It's weird and it comes out of nowhere. It's made even stranger because Toga doesn't actually change or show remorse for anything she did, which included personally hunting and murdering people before she joined the LOV. None of the death and destruction she is also partially responsible for is brought up either, something that Ochako was rightfully upset about during the first war when less people and property had been destroyed. Ochako just accepts everything about her suddenly and her past serious crimes are forgotten so they can cuddle and cry.
Am I shocked Toga died--a little. I didn't think Hori would have the guts to kill off a young girl character, especially one that he clearly got a lot of joy drawing in sexy poses. But at the same time, once he killed off Shigaraki and ended Touya's story with his slow death, I'm not surprised he went the same route with Toga.
This isn't Naruto--Hori isn't really kind to characters that do something wrong, especially if they don't try and change. Enji, Bakugo, Hawks, and Aoyama all sort of got punished for what they did. Enji is the worst off, being permanently crippled, missing an arm and burned everywhere. Bakugo's hand is damaged, his heart weaker, plus he feels bad that Izuku lost his Quirk so they can't compete the same way he wanted them to. Aoyama, despite doing way less wrong and even helping his class during the forest raid, still leaves school because he doesn't feel he earned being there yet. Hawks lost his Quirk and even though him running the HPSC could be seen as good for him, Hawks always wanted a break, but now he has one of the most time consuming and stressful jobs out there.
So, if this is what characters who actively did good things and even changed and fought to be better get, what would characters who never changed and never did anything positive for anyone but their friends/themselves get?
Before the last Arc started, when so many people said the LoV were 100% going to be redeemed I had doubts and always thought it wouldn't make sense with how the story presented redemption or treated other non-LoV villains in the past. That if the main LoV did get some happy ending where they were bffs with the main cast it would clash with how other characters had been treated.
That doesn't mean that I think how Shigaraki, Toga, and Touya ended up in the manga was well done. I think their endings fit far better then a last minute redemption would have, but at the same time you can feel how rushed everything has been since the end of the first war arc. Hori was done with this story months if not years ago, yet he was contractually obligated to finish it. Because of that I think he left out as much as possible. As much as I think he's written some pretty obsessive stuff, particularly towards women, I can't really fully blame him cutting corners or the story being shit at the end.
We know Manga authors, particularly those that work with Jump are treated like shit. That they suffer incredibly long hours at times not even getting to go home for days. We've gotten messages for Hori saying he's sick quite a few times. On top of that, weekly story telling is not a great way to tell a cohesive narrative. Ideas probably change week to week or at least month to month and you can't go back and change the last chapter no matter how much you need or want to. Then you remember he also gave a lot of ideas to the people who made the movies, which would also change his plans for how he wanted the main story to go.
The story is bad--it has been for a while, but I think a lot of people put their hopes on their favorite characters getting a happy ending, even when there were signs that probably wasn't going to be the case. I know how much it sucks when a character you love gets a shitty ending (Stain was my fav, but he got an absolute dogshit ending) but at least, knowing what I know about the industry I can't really blame Hori the way I see some other people doing. Criticize it, sure, but saying Hori hates his readers or is horrible writer isn't true. BNHA was popular for a reason--he's great with characters and the beginning of the story had some great pacing. We'll never know, but I wouldn't be surprised if BNHA could have been amazing if Hori had been treated better and the story hadn't needed a chapter every week.
If anything BNHA has taught me how much a story suffers when authors/artists are treated like crap and forced to work past burnout.
#bnha 429#bnha spoilers#bnha critical#bnha#idk i just feel bad for the guy#i think he's sexist as shit#but no one deserves to work under such bad conditions#and frankly idk how any weekly story turns out any good#especially when its gone on for so many years#like when you think about it the chapters aren't even real full chapters#they're like half or even a quarter of a chapter that you'd find in a book or monthly manga#of course you're your going to have an incoherent story when you write like that#I mean the only other thing written like that are some fanfictions#and those authors can and often do go back and edit things#heck I've seen some that go on hiatus with the specific purpose of overhauling the entire backlog of chapters to make it a better overall#and I think part of why BNHA is perhaps worse then other weekly shonen is because he had a lot he wanted to say#on top of trying to find things that kept him invested in a story he clearly was tired of writing#I mean Lady Nagnat is great example#he watched a movie and thought the female assassin character was cool and it got him excited to draw/write#so he shoehorned in this character that was really only there because she made the story more fun for him to write and draw for a while#like American comics aren't great either when it comes to consistency or coherent plots sometimes#but I do wonder if BNHA might have been better if Hori could have left a story bible and basic outlines of what his plans were#and then someone else could have worked on it instead#because he really didn't seem very into by the end of the first war arc#like I think he wished that had been the end#but it wasn't and he was really tired and burned out#and probably already working on fumes

Top 5 anime/mangas, fma doesn't count. go
I love that we all know FMA is in a league of its own.
Anyway, top five non-FMA anime in no particular order:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ouran High School Host Club
Anohana (full title is Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai if we want to get fancy)
Eureka Seven
This is cheating but I love them equally so I'm putting two into one slot in part because they are similar in some sort of Quality that I can't describe so I often think of them as a pair despite their differences: Toradora! and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
#ouran was the first manga that i got into after watching the show#and it's still the only one that i read as it was being released#i think maybe thursdays were when the fan translation of each chapter would get put up?#i'd be sitting there refreshing the page waiting for it#ouran was also like the second or third anime that i watched#so anyway obviously i love the fma manga but the ouran manga has such a special spot in my heart#also it's just so fantastic in general#switching gears a bit but i never understood why there wasn't more of a fandom presence for eureka seven#it has all the ingredience for a hoppin fandom tbh#idk man!#anyway thanks for the ask!#i am always excited to talk about any or all of the above 🥰#ask#anonymous

writing has truly felt like pulling teeth the last few days, but here, have a hard-earned snippet of something *falls down*
The shards of Shaoshi are still shattered on the road when he finds his way to Wangjiang Pavilion, sun slanting nearly at its peak. Xiao Zijin didn't even bother gathering them up or placing them to the side, the bastard; Di Feisheng would fly to Sigu Sect and duel the man in the courtyard himself for it if he thought it was worth his time.
(One day Di Feisheng will hunt him down. If not for Xiao Zijin's insecure stupidity, he might have laid eyes upon Li Xiangyi again. But he has priorities, and one fumbling idiot, clinging to the reputation of a sect that is only the shell of its former glory, is currently irrelevant.)
Dust has already settled on Shaoshi's hilt. Di Feisheng reaches for it, settles it in his grasp. Even unbalanced like this, with its blade in pieces, its former quality as a weapon is evident by touch. But the strike of Yangzhouman remains where he strokes the hammered clouds of the grip. There is no spirit to this sword now, broken by the inner energy it was aligned with for so long.
Li Xiangyi is dead, but his sword is not, Di Feisheng told him half a month ago, unthinking but for the wine in his hand and the rush of being alive, both himself and the man across from him. The last laugh Shaoshi has become is sharper than the remains it's broken into. Even mended, it will no longer be the same blade that first carved out the forms of Xiangyi Taijian.
Li Xiangyi is dead.
His words were the ones taken from Li Xiangyi's mouth, an acquiescence then, because how could Li Xiangyi be dead when here he was? Smiling, as tangible a thing as the touch of Yangzhouman singing through Di Feisheng's meridians. Beifeng Baichang had let him survive, retreat into himself, but Yangzhouman allowed him to live again.
With strength left in Li Xiangyi to snap his own sword, was it enough to save its founder one last time, too?
"Zunshang."
Wuyan lands without sound in the shadow of the pavilion, crouching into a bow. Di Feisheng motions for him to rise. At least there'll always be one man in this world to appear on time.
"Have everyone left search for Li Xiangyi. Send them downriver first. Check for any abandoned boats on the shore. I want to know everything, whether you succeed or not."
"Understood. What should we do if we find him?"
"If he's dead, bring him back. Or tell me where he's buried."
"And if he's alive?"
He's still owed the chance to face Li Xiangyi, left to know more of him in Di Feisheng's second life than just water-stained lines on paper. This, is something he should fight for.
And yet somewhere folded in Fang Duobing's belt is Li Xiangyi's letter, the only farewell he stopped to give. When the time comes, it comes.
What's the difference between a last goodbye, and a letting go?
Wuyan looks up. "Zunshang?"
Di Feisheng kneels on dusty ground and tears at the hem of his inner robe, something at hand to wrap Shaoshi in. There's still things yet of Li Xiangyi to pick up the pieces of. "Wuyan, have you ever thought I had an answer for everything?"
"I—"
"Because I'm realizing that I don't think I do." He folds the bundle into his own palm. "Go."
"So if Li Xiangyi is still in the Jianghu?"
Shaoshi's hilt weighs heavy in Di Feisheng's other hand, turned to dead metal.
"Ask me again when you find him."
#part of what is a first chapter. probably. maybe. i wish it wasn't#IM NOT SUPPOSED TO BE STARTING AN INTENDED MULTICHAP THIS DOESN'T END WELL GOOD GOD WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE#okay it's 2am im gonna go watch my brainless hk gangster drama now#finally got this section done it only took like 3 days#mysterious lotus casebook#di feisheng#wuyan#li xiangyi#ashton writes fic#li lianhua

And then the 1535 scenes (thus far) are the only ones which are traditionally linear, so I'll leave those be for now...
#maybe i'll add excerpts. just to be craaaazy.....#this is making me realize how little i added A/N research notes in the beginning like whoops#like idek why i chose to set those first scenes in march 1528 particularly... except that i think i'd read anne had her own lodgings#in windsor at that time and wanted to write around that. lol#im also likely to private this fic once i get to the E-rated scenes/chapters so like. watch this space...#(private as in accessible to ao3 account holders only)#downloading the pdf. also not a bad idea! <3#if you're a re-reader particularly#the only one in between 1518 and 1525 here i have missing is#december 1521; where mary has lost margaret pole as her governess#or i might place 1520? i need to recheck the dates where she was removed from her service#it was either in relation to the investigation of arrest of the duke of buckingham#but anyway. it's the first time she and george interact. at a yuletide banquet. so i have it set up to parallel a future 1535 scene
