"Deep Domain" review
Tumblr media
Novel from 1987, by Howard Weinstein. This author (apart from writing the TAS episode "The Pirates of Orion") had previously published another novel, The Covenant of the Crown. And this one has a few things in common with it: a setting that leans more towards fantasy/adventure than sci-fi, a political plot involving the government of an alien planet, a timeline set in the movie era (in this case, shortly before "The Wrath of Khan"), and a villanous couple that discuss their evil plans before having rough sex.
The culture and society of the water-based planet Akkalla is well developed, so the reader gets a fairly comprehensive vision of this world, its problems and its landscapes (and "seascapes"). It appears that Nimoy consulted Weinstein for ideas while working in "The Voyage Home". The appearance of whales and the environmentalist message of this novel seem to have inspired the movie.
This author also has a knack for writing the characters in their movie incarnations, specially Kirk (though at times he seems a bit indecisive) and McCoy, who seems to be his favorite child. For a section of the story, we have the unusual duo of Spock and Chekov working as a team, and they have some good scenes together (at one point talking about marshmallows and campfires, years before the scene in "The Final Frontier"). There are plenty of guest characters, perhaps too many, though some of them disappear from the narrative later, and their plot threads turn out rather inconsequential.
On the downside, the novel flounders a bit in its middle section. The political imbroglio becomes rather messy and hard to follow, with so many factions involved. And the point of view changes too much between the different characters, with some scenes feeling unnecessary (for example, I don't feel we needed so much info about what the villains were plotting behind the scenes). The plot also kind of comes to a halt. Though things get back in track again towards the end.
It's definitely not the most exciting story, and Kirk gets involved in the local problems more out of chivalry, than because there's a real danger to the Enterprise. But it's not a bad novel by any means, with endearing characters and occasional touches of humor.
Spoilers under the cut:
A group of Federation scientists have come into trouble with the Akkallan government after a revolutionary discovery. The Enterprise is scheduled to review their progress, but they send Spock and Chekov in a shuttle first. Upon approaching the planet, the shuttle is attacked by ships from nearby planet Chorym, and crashes on the ocean. Spock and Chekov observe how the giant Chorymi harvest ship swallows tons of ocean water, to catch whatever they find there, and then departs. Using an emergency raft, Spock and Chekov manage to reach an island, but they're captured soon by guerrilla rebels. Calling themselves the "Cape Alliance", they oppose the incresingly totalitarian government, and are led by a man named Zzev.
When the Enterprise finally arrives at Akkalla, they find the scientists holed up and facing reprisals from the native scientists of the Collegium. The problem seems to be some bones they found, which would prove the existence of the mythical Wwafida, an evolved race of Akkallans that live underwater. Kirk and McCoy also visit the Publican, who governs the main continent, but find him a rather weak man, subject to the manipulations of his brigadier Jjenna Vvox (yes, all Akkallan names look like that). The brigadier says that they don't know what happened to Spock and Chekov, but starts a half-hearted attempt to locate them.
After this comes the part that's quite messy. On the one hand, the Federation scientists disappear (apparently abducted by the government). On the other, Kirk comes into contact with Llissa Kkayn, preceptor of the Collegium, and discovers that the rift between both groups of scientists was engineered by the government. Vvox and her lover conspire to take the power from the Publican, and start arresting politicians and scientists, though Llissa avoids imprisonment aboard the Enterprise. Meanwhile Spock and Chekov, alongside rebel leader Zzev, had also been captured by the military. Though they eventually escape the ship bringing them to an island prison, and the three beam up to the Enterprise.
Once everyone's reunited and the plot threads come together, they decide that the only way to stop the government from oppressing the scientists, and the Chorymi from raiding the oceans, is proving without doubt the existence of the Wwafida. The government has a lucrative arrangement with Chorym: in exchange for energy resources, they let them harvest in the ocean. But the existence of sentient life under the sea would ruin this business; and that's why they were supressing the research (though the Chorymi had already broken the treaty and were fishing illegally, so I don't know why they care so much...). Zzev, who is revealed to be Llissa's long-estranged father, and obsessed with the Wwafida, joins the investigation. Kirk and company lead an underwater expedition aboard the submarine shuttle "Cousteau", though they only find some very old bones from centuries ago.
They have more luck when exploring a northern island, declared off-limits by the government. There, they discover a subset of Akkallans that lead an isolated and primitive life. They're friendly, and no elders are on sight. The tribe leader explains that that's because normal Akkallans, upon reaching a certain age, undergo a transformation to Wwafida, and start living beneath the waves. Yet somehow, the modern population has lost this ability. When some fishermen from the tribe accidentally kill a Wwafida, McCoy has the opportunity to study the corpse. And he discovers that it has a gland missing on Akkallans from the main continent. Llissa explains that this gland, so far believed to be useless, is removed at birth for religious reasons. Yet the gland proves to be crucial in the later development as Wwafida. (So, these idiots had the opportunity to spend their retirement days as mermaids, and threw it away!? Ugh! Also, considering that the author is Jewish, I wonder if this is criticism of circumcision).
In the later part, Zzev decides to undergo a dangerous treatment with hormones extracted from the gland, to turn himself into a Wwafida at breakneck pace, despite McCoy's objections. But this is the only way to offer proof of their existence, and warn the other Wwafida about the impending raid from Chorym. The Enterprise tries to keep at bay both the harvest ships, and Vvox's troops, while Zzev says a final goodbye to his daugther and goes to live under the sea.
Spirk Meter: 2/10*. It's very little, a rings rather professional, but while talking with Llissa about Spock, Kirk has nothing but praise for him: "But I've got no doubts that Spock's the most loyal friend a man could ever have. I've never met anyone with more integrity, intelligence, strength -oh, he's got his flaws, but we bring the human out in him every so often- kind of makes up for them. [...] He'd give his life to save this ship and crew. I know that as surely as I've ever known anything. He wouldn't think twice about it, if it were the 'logical' thing to do. If I ever gave up command of the Enterprise, he's the only man I'd trust with her." Which is exactly what he does at the end of the novel, in preparation for the stage of the second film.
As it's usual with this author, the McKirk elements are far more evident. Kirk and McCoy are... well, they are very married. They argue like an old couple, yet go together EVERYWHERE (McCoy follows Kirk so closely, that he bumps into him a couple of times). Both can tell at once if something's wrong with the other just by observing his body language and subtle gestures. In the few fighting scenes, they act as an action couple. They have a botany park aboard the Enterprise that is their favorite place... There's also a scene where McCoy is so tired after working non-stop with Zzev's treatment, that he refuses Kirk's invitation to dinner. Chapel intervenes as a good friend, and urges him to go have dinner with the Admiral, to soothe his mind. And Kirk is pained to see the emotional turmoil in McCoy's eyes during their "date", blaming himself for pushing the doctor so far. At the end, McCoy argues vehemently with Kirk about his decision to abandon the Enterprise and become an Academy teacher, and takes this as a personal issue. Apart from this, McCoy shows a peculiar, playful behavior around Kirk that nobody else exhibits, yet somehow he gets away with it.
*A 10 in this scale is the most obvious spirk moments in TOS. Think of the back massage, "You make me believe in miracles", or "Amok Time" for example.

So on my rotation, I'm working with another student. We have to do topic discussion together, except we're both expected to do our own work, and we're also expected to create handouts for our preceptors or the people teaching us. This whole time I've been feeling like shit that my topic discussion handouts are nowhere as good as hers and that I feel like I don't understand the topic enough by the deadlines. I've been struggling to keep up while she seems to have everything done on time and she even goes beyond sometimes.
I've been trying to give myself more grace with everything considered: 1) Oncology is my weakest topic, and much of my classmates, myself included, wouldn't have passed that class if it weren't for exam curves. I'm taking this rotation to help with gaps in my oncology knowledge, while the other student is taking this rotation because she's interested in the subject. 2) This is the only rotation so far that I've had to make handouts for every Topic Discussion. Previously, I was expected to just study up on the topic, make some notes, and then have an open discussion with my preceptors without needing to present anything. 3) Oncology is a whole new world to me. It's so different from the other fields. These oncology topics are heavy and would normally take me a week to do, but we have about two days to do them (realistically a few hours on each day. I've stayed awake just to get them done, not going to bed. I keep falling asleep while driving). And we have two topic discussions per week.
As frustrated as I am, it's been great working with her otherwise and I've been amazed by her capabilities and knowledge. She's also kind and really cool. I've learned a lot on this rotation so far and I'm getting better as well just...slowly af. I'm happy for her progress though, proud even to see a fellow anime fan do so great. I just feel like I'm constantly in her shadow, while our preceptors are impressed by her and I feel like I don't stand a chance now to get any recommendations for residency.
At the end of my first week, my preceptor (we both have a different main preceptor) was telling me to be more curious. We did a topic discussion with her the following week and she said to the other student, "it's good that you're curious". I want to think she meant it genuinely but looking at how she spoke to one of the residents later in the week, her statement is starting to feel like a stab at me idk. She kinda has mean-girl vibes like the type where you question if there's sarcasm in what she's saying. She's been nice, but we all know niceness ≠ kindness.
Then I found out this week that the student has been using chatGPT for topic discussion. It creates the handout format for her and "gives her ideas on what information to put on the handout". Her biggest task is to find the articles to support the info it gives her and verify the information with the guidelines. A great way to save some time on creating the handout, and using the saved time to actually learn the topic.
So, now I don't feel as bad, but I'm questioning if I should be tossing my moral stance on generative AI aside just to get where I want to be. I've refused to use chatGPT so far because we know all genAI feeds on other people's work without permission. I've even caught it using lines from one of my fan fictions. I don't even want to imagine what it has stolen from my original short stories and poems that I've posted online. I hate it so much but I feel like I don't have a choice if I want to keep up with her.

Alright time to ramble about Marcus and Tybalt!
So, prior to meeting Tybalt Leftpaw, Marcus Furyclash was very much the most charr-est charr you could get. He and his warbandmate Maverick were two peas in a pod, proud, cocky and competitive with a side of violent.
Then Marcus joins the Whispers, because he's not getting physically stronger than his rival Nastazya. He wants to get quicker, more agile.
The first mission with Tybalt at first was a bore to him, going around just talking to people for info. As a blood he's beaten people for info before. But then the next part, distracting the pirates with a drinking contest? This actually got him way closer to Tybalt just from that, especially getting to fight their way out from the pirates afterwards. He just started connecting to Tybalt way more after that.
From there things just soared, he was making fast friends with Tybs, and enjoyed getting his Whispers training from him.
And then eventually they go to aid the skritt, finding Nastazya and Forgal have done the same. During this, it's when Marcus finds out about Tybalt's bad history with explosions and his right arm. But by now, he's fast friends with him, he's basically just like a warbandmate to him now. And built-in prejudice he has against a gladium is replaced by this new care for Tybalt, the spark that shifts his viewpoints.
And then came Claw Island, Marcus was there with Nastazya and Chip. All three of their mentors fell in a last stand, Tybalt, Forgal and Sieran.
Marcus took this the hardest, demanding that Tybalt should get away, he'll fight to the end. But Leftpaw was adamant, and Furyclash was dragged away roaring by Nastazya because they couldn't waste any more time.
He'd never lost any of his warbandmates before, this was the first time he really felt loss. He was struggling far more than Chip or Nastazya, to the point that Naz even tried to console him. He just brushed her off, and she got Trahearne to accompany Marcus when returning to the preceptors. Ultimately, Naz's leadership on Claw Island is what convinced Trahearne to choose her as Commander.
After saving the people in Lion's Arch from undead attacks, Marcus got his strength back again. This is what Tybalt wanted him to keep on doing, this is what he needs to keep doing.
And then comes Marcus being sent to assist with a mortar crew against Risen as the new Pact makes its way towards Orr. And the horrific trick that made him command they open fire on a group of Pact soldiers mesmerised to look like the Risen.
Marcus' heart was torn apart right there, especially after his newfound drive to be saving people thanks to Tybalt's impact. The prideful, violent charr Marcus once was has firmly been abandoned. He makes amends, he finds out the truth, then dedicates himself fully to never abandoning another person again. If they can be saved, he will save them. (This is also what later leads to Marcus quickly chasing after Rytlock into the Mists, he's not gonna let another Tybalt happen.)
The new Marcus is here to stay, a changed man. And after Zhaitan is taken down, the smitten-with-Naz charr approaches to ask to accompany her. Partly to be with her, partly to give back to Tyria, to make the world better in Tybalt's place.
---
Many years later, during the events of Cantha, Marcus loses his right hand protecting his daughter.
His new paw prosthesis brings thoughts back to his head. --- Excerpt from my Commander Nastazya stories ---
Marcus and Nastazya both respond with grateful farewells, now going to take their leave of the mansion, time to let those inventors get on with their current tasks. Once outside and back in the Daigo Ward, Marcus eagerly looks about his new jade tech paw, gesturing and moving it around as he gets used to it.
"Enjoying yourself?" Ragewelder comments jovially, it's fun seeing him so entranced by it.
"It's pretty great, I tell you. Just think how many charr could have a better life with something like this, or even like how Taimi has those supports on her legs." Furyclash flinches for a moment, his gaze lowers. "Hm… Think how much better a life Tybalt could've had with one of these."
"…Marc." Nastazya sighs softly, holding a paw on his bare shoulder. "It's been over nine years and you still think of him, he really changed you, didn't he?"
"Yeah, he did. If he could see us now, having beaten back all of the elder dragons…" The tiger-striped charr looks to his paws, his regular left and his mechanical right, a soft chuckle escapes him. "Y'know, now I'm a Leftpaw like Tybalt was, huh?"
"You are, aren't you? Didn't think of that until now…" A bittersweet expression on Ragewelder's face as she speaks softly. "Not planning to change your name are you?"
"No, no. I'll always be Furyclash, that's who I am." He smiles to his mate, his left paw moving up to hold over hers. "My chance to be here, with you. If Tybalt hadn't done what he did, we wouldn't have this. I'm thankful, despite how much I wish he would still be here to share drinks with."
"Then after out sightseeing, how about we do just that? A good drink for all those we've lost, who got us this far." Nastazya suggests, perhaps some helpful closure after all this.
"I'd like that." Marcus gently nuzzles his snout up beside his mate's, getting the same in return.

Was scrolling through the CST tag cuz I start clinicals next week. Do you have any tips ?
Ooh wishing you luck!! You got this! 💌
Clinicals were a little scary at the beginning and of course being in the OR is just a whole world of its own and can be overwhelming at first so try to keep in mind that you’re gonna feel a little out of place at first and that’s ok! You’re gonna see crazy and amazing things, what the body actually really looks like on the inside and all the ins and outs of the before, during and after of a surgery and it’s a lotttt but it will all start to make sense as you go and you’ll get more comfortable as you go!
I’m thinking about tips to give you and just remembering one of my instructors saying “try and be a sponge” lol so soak in as much as you can and jotting down notes when you can will be super important! I would bring a small notepad or at the very least always have a pen on you to write down cases you’re in and what’s being done, even small details or suggestions you receive, there’s gonna be a lot of info flying at you and it’s just a good way to keep some of that organized and having notes to look back helps when you’re tired and trying to process everything you’ve done and seen at the end of the day
At first this will be hard cause it’s all new but in the same sphere of note taking I would always try and write down what’s being done or what I think is being done during a surgery cause you’ll see later than when you start to understand what the surgeon is doing it’s easier to then anticipate what will be needed next and along with that it’s totally ok to ask questions about what is being done on/in the body, it’ll show that you’re curious and engaged with what’s going on!
Always being extra snacks too, I would keep a stash of granola bars/fruit snacks/whatever snack you like in your bag especially during the first few weeks of clinicals as you get used to being at the hospital and on your feet for long periods of time and it’s just good habit to get into cause even now that I’ve graduated and am working as a surgical tech when I find moments to go to the bathroom or eat something real quick I definitely take them!
Another tip I would give is to try and offer to help with setting up as much as you can especially in your first few weeks and helping your circulating nurse or helping wherever you can or are allowed but also knowing when it’s best to stay out of the way, that’s always a bit tricky trying to find that line of like I’m here and I’m learning and starting to put into practice what I’ve learned but at times there won’t always be moments or surgeries you’ll be in that are best for teaching and you just kinda have to roll with it and take what you can from it
Oh another thing! You’re gonna be with many preceptors and around a lot of people, especially surgeons, who have big personalities and have certain ways they do things, certain hospital policies can be different too but always try and stick to and refer back to what you’ve been taught cause your instructors want to see that you’re doing things by the book and by taught techniques and what’s best practice, not everyone that’s gonna be training you is gonna do things as they should so sticking to the basics of what you know will help you navigate that!
One last thing I can think of is seeing if you can take pictures of different table set ups for the surgeries you see, that was helpful for me to have an actual visual of it because it’s not always easy to recall from memory the best way to set up a table when you’re first starting out and of course I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times already but set things up the same way every time!
I think that’s all I have in tips to start out with but if you ever have questions or need to talk about clinicals I am always here, it’s exciting talking about this on here cause idk many people online who do this job as well! I’m always here for ya! Wishing you luck again, you’re gonna be great! 💕

I kind of need to rant and get some life events off my chest below the cut. This is long and there are drug mentions.
TL;DR nothing is going right and I'm running on emergency brain systems right now trying not to totally shut down.
So all of this has happened in the last week and maybe *maybe* I can come up for a breath soon.
My brother was in the hospital for an infection (he's homeless), then a day later we found out he's doing heroin. A few days after that he's in jail. He's out now but has to make his court dates or he's really in jail. He will probably miss his court dates.
I've been extremely proud of my grades in my program. Got word this week that a certification course that we assumed would be pass fail like one of our other classes this semester is not pass fail. They average all of your grades from the modules you took and give you a letter grade despite us getting the certification as long as we pass. The program doesn't allow you to retake the quizzes if you get 80% or better. I had finished the course before I was told this was the case so my grade is locked in and I've lost my 4.0 because of this. I know it shouldn't be that upsetting but I didn't even know my 4.0 was on the line and I lost it. They didn't post a syllabus until 3 weeks into the semester and say we should have known because this info was in our course handbook (a paragraph among 40 pages of text). I think these assholes should have put up a fucking syllabus like they do with the rest of the courses but no. All my hardwork is ruined by this one fucking thing.
Then. These assholes in my program gave me one week notice that I had to move apartments. Not different buildings. Different units within the same building. Not so bad except there were 2 of us in apartment A and 1 person in apartment B. Each apartment can hold 4 people. Meaning there are a total of 5 free beds between the two apartments. What do they do? Tell the two of us in apartment A need to move into apartment B so that 4 people can move into apartment A........... That's it. 5 goddamn free beds and 2 of us had to move so 4 people could all move into the same apartment. I had to get off of a 9 hour day at the hospital (not including the 3 total hour commute through DC) and then promptly move all my stuff last night into a new apartment so the other people could move in today. What's even better is in 4 weeks the 2 people who are in this apartment with me will be leaving for different rotations and I'm staying. I have a weird feeling I'll be moving to a different unit in a month and it makes me want to scream.
On top of all this, last week my preceptor at the hospital was out unexpectedly. I had been in a real clinical setting for 9 days total then was basically thrown out on my own dealing with real patient situations. Luckily the residents (basically students as well) were fairly knowledgeable but they also had just arrived a week ago and didn't know the procedures. So I was thrown to the wolves and trying not to kill someone all while dealing with the aforementioned issues.
Oh and we have an exam on wednesday of next week. I have to get home from the hospital and take an exam between 6 and 10pm. I wish someone could explain why the exams are not given on the fucking weekend where we can prepare/study but whatever I can't even spare the effort to try to explain it.
I can't wait to not be a student in this program anymore so I can be treated like a human being again. I feel like I'm screaming into deaf ears while they sneer and label me as nothing more than an inconvenience despite me paying them tens of thousands of dollars.

So I’ve been ordained for a couple years, I think I need to pick a title.
I’m partial to these two, but I don’t even know.  I’m trying to stay away from any that are associate with a particular religion, since I am attached to no particular religion.
And I’ll take suggestions not on the list - I was browsing through Star Trek belief systems earlier for inspiration.  No luck though, they’re all a little *too*religiousy.
Colporteur -  a peddler of books, newspapers, and similar literature.
Thaumaturge - a worker of wonders and performer of miracles; a magician.
(list also in the read-more, I still haven’t figured out how to do alt-text on desktop)
OH ALSO if you want to get ordained, it’s fast and free.  Any physical paraphernalia with the info on it costs, but the actual ordination is free.
You can legitimately marry people, bless things, all the good stuff.

Welcome (again) to A Cup-pella, Morgan! We’re excited to have you and Sandy Owen in the game! Please go through the checklist to make sure you’re ready to go and send in your account within the next 24 hours.
OOC INFO
Name + pronouns: Morgan + she/her Age: 26 Timezone: EST Ships: Sandy/Chemistry, Sandy/Happiness Anti-Ships: Forced!!!
IC INFO
Full Name: Sandy Patience Owen Face Claim: Meghann Fahy Age/Birthday: 29/February 4, 1990 ~ Aquarius queen Occupation: Pediatric Surgeon Personality: Intelligent, Ambitious, Passionate, Silly, Guarded, Resolute, Nurturing Hometown: Charlotte, North Carolina Bio:Before her little sister came along, Sandy was the apple of their parents’ eyes. She was read to every single night, her lunches always had fruits and veggies, and her dreams were sugar plums almost every night. Then came Penny, and Sandy’s dreams became much different. Sandy became the big sister of anyone’s dreams. Their parents noted how careful Sandy was when holding Penny and just how loving she was toward the baby. They just knew the two would be best friends.
Sandy was always considered a leader as she was growing up. She wasn’t a huge sports fanatic, mostly because she would rather be busy with her studies or the piano. As their parents were both in the medical field, Sandy felt pressure to do well in school. Thus, she tried her very best at all times. For as long as she could remember, especially after becoming a big sister and helping her mother at every chance, Sandy wanted to work with babies and children. Whether that was a pediatrician or a pediatric surgeon, she wanted to help little ones feel better.
Headstrong and full of energy, Sandy always knew her place was at the front. Though she could have just as easily been a bully, growing up with a sibling so close in age forced her to set a good example in front of little Penny. She soon became the girl that stood up for others in every situation. As it were, the quality paid off when she completed externships at the local hospital as her favorite patients were the little ones that couldn’t always express how they were feeling. This developed her need even further to stand up for the little humans that were in pain and help them in anyway she could. Her future career seemed to be solidifying itself before her eyes.
At the age of 15, Sandy sat her parents down with a poster presentation on her sexuality. Because of her research and the passion inserted in her words, her parents felt that she had truly thought about what she was saying. They accepted her with love and tears in their eyes. Being bisexual may have been fine in the Owen household, it was still continuously difficult outside the doors. The loving nature of her parents and sister could only get Sandy so far. It was up to her to stand up for herself at school and anywhere else. Loads of people talked behind her back stating that she was going through a stage, many thought she was doing it for attention. When she did get her first girlfriend at the age of 17, boys would flock to them on their dates to the movies and prompt them to kiss. It only took Sandy punching an unruly boy to get them to settle down once and for all. For the rest of her time in high school, she had few people bully her into submission. It just couldn’t be done.
Her first girlfriend followed her to UNC Chapel Hill where she studied Pre-Medical Sciences. The relationship didn’t last long as Sandy devoted far too much time to her studies. Sandy had decided, against her advisor’s wishes, to take more credits than was advised so that she could graduate early and begin her graduate plans. As much as Sandy was focused on her career and studies, she still made time to join a sorority, find her first boyfriend, break up with her first boyfriend, and find out that she was really into Moscow mules.
After she graduated a year early, Sandy began her graduate career at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At the age of 22, Sandy was finding that she was going to spend most her life in school. Though she was decently okay with that fact, she made a promise to herself to make the effort in relationships if her studies did not suffer. Much to her chagrin, the majority of her relationships did not last longer than 6 months. The reasoning all differed, but Sandy knew it was because they could not handle her busy schedule of classes and preceptor hours. She understood how they felt in some way, knowing the stories her parents would tell. It still left her incredibly lonely, yearning for something more in her life.
3 years into her graduate program a shockwave soon came that ripped through Sandy’s life, tearing up every root that ever grounded her. The death of her father came as a complete blindside. The man was healthier than his peers and always went to every doctor appointment, assuring himself a long life to watch his daughters have babies of their own. Family was so important to him. Sandy rushed home, throwing all her responsibilities out the window, begging the heads of her program to understand that she may need a few weeks off to gather up the pieces of her life. They obliged, the people at Johns Hopkins had families of their own and respected Sandy enough to know that this was a defining time in her life.
To say that the Owens were devastated would be an understatement. Sandy even considered transferring closer to home just to be closer to her mom. Suzie Owen would not have any part of that. There were many nights where Sandy would end up in her mother’s bed begging her to let her transfer home, but at the end of the 3 weeks, Suzie and Penny helped Sandy pack her things to send her back to Baltimore. Sandy ended up with a chip on her shoulder that increased her focus tenfold, something her colleagues didn’t think was possible. She took it upon herself to have her father’s legacy mean something, to complete her residency, become a surgeon, and live her life in his honor. It was the least she could do.
The years seemed to fly by as Sandy devoted herself almost entirely to her career and her family, letting other aspects of her life fall by the wayside. After her graduation and residency, Sandy made the final decision to follow Penny to New York City. Though unconventional, she knew that her little sister was wise beyond her years and made the best of decisions for her life. Sandy had to make sure Penny was going to be well taken care of and protected at all costs. So in September of 2019, Sandy made the adult decision to move herself to New York and start all over again.
Pets: No pets because she doesn’t have the time. She wouldn’t be opposed to getting a cat in the future.
Relationships:
Penny Owen: As the older sister, Sandy has ALWAYS looked after Penny. Whether they were in elementary school, high school, or in New York City as adults. Being that the two are close in age, they do have their arguments every now and then, but they are thick as thieves. After the passing of their father, they grew closer and closer. Sandy finds herself holding back emotions from Penny at times to protect her, however.
April’s Growers: After moving to New York, Sandy found herself a routine with the hospital, her home life, and her sister. She needed something more. With that, Penny told her about the Growers and Sandy had to join. Sandy likes to come up with ideas for the group to accomplish and loves to work with the group and her friends.

So, I think there was a hit on the Luofu. Specifically, the former head of the Alchemy Commission.
We first learn about the former head in the Undestroyed Letter, (found here) in it Dan Shu states that Bailu is doing well under the supervision of the former head. Implying that this letter was written around the time Dan Shu became the Alchemy Commission's head.
In the next patch, we got to meet her mirage echo during Dan Heng's And Bailu's quest. Which surprises Bailu because she didn't know that the former head had been reborn yet.
In 1.5 we actually get her name; it's found in Summary of the Luofu's Ambrosial Arbor Crisis (which can be read here). In it, we learn that the former head's name was Yunhua and that she was banished during a dispute among the Vidyadhara. The letter then goes on to ask the receiver- which is Hanya- to get the Ten Lords to recall Yunhua for further questioning with Hanya responding with something along the lines of, "not our problem, let the Six Charioteers deal with it".
The fact that Yunhua's hatching rebirth isn't well known, or if at all, is very strange to me. You would think a Judge would be able to dig up this kind of info. This is why I feel like there's been a hit.
What we know so far is:
Because of internal fighting Yunhua was banished and lost her position as head of the Alchemy Commission.
Despite her banishment she stuck around to teach Bailu, presumably during the early years of Dan Shu's tenure.
Yunhua's rebirth seems to be generally unknown, which isn't really strange unless you count the fact that not even the judges know about it.
I still need more proof before I call this a hit, but considering the fact that not even the 10 Lords know where she is, really gives me a feeling that something fishy is going on here.
As for who ordered the potential hit, and why...
My best bet is was Dan Shu, or the Preceptors. I can see them doing something like this to tie up any loose ends.

Lost Light #11 Thoughts & Feels
Lost Light #11 is called Filling in the Blanks but I think a more fitting title would’ve been Spotlight: Getaway. Let’s find out why!
Under a read more for spoilers.
+These opening pages.... Yeah, knowing who Getaway is talking to, my eyes are rolling so hard.
+It's Froid btw. Since my Rung radar is permanently set to eleven I saw this a mile off but this was a cool set-up and reveal. Starting in Rung's office, leaving him off-screen, then we see the box of models ships, and because we know how important they are to Rung, alarm bells start to ring. Something is wrong.
It's a nice reveal, is what I'm saying.
+Now, back to the meat of the issue. We're finally getting Getaway's side of the story. SQUEEEE!
+Roberts has already admitted to there being an timeline error. I'm surprised the editor didn't pick up on it. I bet Barber wouldn't have missed it. I miss him.
+I love these panels of Getaway in the bar, his skills as a manipulator are on full display here. Stroking egos, creating an us Vs them narrative, exploiting their weaknesses and insecurities. Glorious!
+Love the added detail of Atomizer with the gun under the table.
+Oh! So Tailgate was the setup for the mutiny to follow, now the Plan A.
+I find it really interesting that Getaway used THUNDERCLASH'S (sigh, what a guy) isolation to convince him to join his side. It adds a nice layre to THUNDERCLASH'S character, one that makes totally sense when you think about the pedestal the poor guy has been placed on.
Tumblr media
Ah, see this? I'm just going to put a pin in this for later.
Tumblr media
Speaking of THUNDERCLASH.
Sigh, what a guy...
+Hi Froid
Tumblr media
Something tells me if was probably Prowl.
+It’s so cool to see the #50 transmission from Getaway’s point of view!
+So, all those people in the #50 big reveal panel were there because they wanted Megs off the ship, and thought they were were doing the right thing. Thank God @_@
Tumblr media
... Hound, THUNDERCLASH, after hearing this why the feck didn't you lock Getaway up?! He's admitted to brainwashing you!
Tumblr media
Hm, having second thoughts, are we?
+Getaway stealing command from Hound was slicker than a wet weasel on a linoleum floor.
Tumblr media
Time for another pin.
+This issue may be Spotlight:Getaway but Atomiser is getting some excellent character work, too. I love his relationship with Getaway, how he seems to understand and anticipate his needs. They're a really good time. If only they'd use their powers for good.
+Physics has a crush on Preceptor.
+Physic's crush is one-sided because Preceptor has a crush on Brainstorm.
+So this is the Warren that was mentioned last issue...
+The map still makes no sense to me. I'm glad Getaway can read it.
Tumblr media
So Rodimus' map is different to THUNDERCLASH'S... I wonder if that means anything. We still don't know where these visions are coming from.
Tumblr media
OH OH OH! Prepare, confront, repel! Whatever Cyberutopia is I doubt it's anything good.
I wonder how Scorponok got roped into all this clan business.
+Getaway's panic and relief at the SOS is fantastic. He's just waiting for the penny to drop.
+Refusing to help innocents, Getaway. Really? How did you think the others were going to take that info? THUNDERCLASH saves an orphanage at least once a month.
+OH MY GOD
THIS IS IT! We've reached peak Rodimus! This is the most Rodimus thing he's ever done! I honestly love his speech so much.
Suffering asteroids, cutting his own arm off just to show up destiny, PFFFFT! Small potatoes. Having you corpses dismantled and rebuilt into a gun(that matches his colour scheme, no less) that is to be used to kill your murderer... That's so metal.
+Also, puh-leese! Rung's eyebrows are unmatched throughout the entire galaxy.
+Gotta admit, I don't like the fake news line. It's a little too on the nose.
+And here is where it all starts to unravel.
+Wow, thing you got enough shots in there, Getaway.
+Nooooo! Riptide!
Tumblr media
I laughed at this and I feel terrible for doing so.
Tumblr media
YAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Froid and Sunder! The Murder boyfriends are back together. Froid seems pretty chill with the fact that Sunder turned him inside out.
+Sunder looks awesome in Lawrence's style. Look at those teeth! Oh! Did he always have an Autobrand [checks back issue] He didn't.
+Pfft! Boaty McBoatface. Odd enough, I'm don't find this reference as grating as fake news was.
+I guess that answers all my questions for the last issue. The crew weren't lying about the rod Squad leaving, they'd been brainwashed into believing that happened.
Tumblr media
Right, time to gather up all those pins. Here we go! Getaway wants to become a prime and believes it is his destiny to do so, he also wants the respect and admiration of others and feels threatened and insecure around those who have what he desires. Does this sound familiar? It should, you could say the exact same about Rodimus. The only difference between them is Rodimus has a solid moral core. Getaway is a dark reflection of Rodimus, and I’m pleasantly surprised about learning this.
I'm fascinated by the signs of affinity and what that means for an MTO. I wonder if it was something that was hushed up because a CC showing signs of Primehood is a pretty big deal.
Tumblr media
And the mystery of the braincords is solved! Bloody Hell, Getaway. I know you're a dick but I can't believe you agreed to this O_O
Sunder continues to be deliciously creepy. Just, bbbbbrrrrrrrr, chills. His preferred method of entry reminds me a bit of something Chromedome said allllllll the way back in the Sparkeater issues. With corpses, CD preferred to enter through the eyes. It's kinda cool to see how the different methods and techniques among Mneomosurgeons.
+I've got some mixed feelings over Getaway's moment of hesitation. It's an important crossroads for the character, the actual point of no return. That in itself is interesting and I have no problem with it, what I'm not keen on is that Getaway, master manipulator and shit-stirrer extraordinaire, was played by Froid.
Okay, okay. Froid is a criminal psychoanalyst, and is no slouch himself when it comes to mind games, but it feels so much like Froid is going “Oh, you're just a big chicken, Cheep-cheep-cheep-cheep!”
Oh! Same way Prowl convinced to take on Overload. Another parallel!
+Mixed feelings aside, I'm ticked by Froid. He's just here for the drama. Oh sure, he says he's interested in Getaway from purely an academic point-of-view. But we all know he's here to see it all fall apart.
Tumblr media
+BTW I ship Froid x Getaway now. Sunder can join them for a threesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riptide really came into his own these last few issues. I hope he makes it past this trilogy.
+EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! SCRAPLETS! How cut- I mean, horrifying! … >_>... [tiny squee]
+Getaway is quite cruel in these final pages. This isn't something new, he was always this petty and malicious when mocking Whirl, but this stings.
+Please let Riptide be okay. I'm hoping that because the Nudge Gun is low on nudge juice it will give him a chance of escape.
Tumblr media
Looks like someone is having some doubts.
Can we just take a moment to applaud Lawrence's skills. Atomizer has no mouth(and he must scream) or eyes, but his growing doubt and reluctance is beautifully expressed through the art.
+Okay... See you all next issue for the final instalment of the Mutineer Trilogy :)

I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that my preceptor is punishing me idk. Their anger issues aside, for the final project, I could choose between doing a "patient case" or a "journal club article." I didn't want to do a patient case since I know it would take me much longer (keeping in mind we have other assignments on top of assignments I have due for school), and I would have to stay on site to complete it since I don't have access to patient info at home.
Patient profiles are faster to go through for someone who is experienced with it (e.g., my preceptor). However, the journal club requires them to read the article in order to properly grade me. It's more work for my preceptor, and they are probably not happy about it since they are very busy.
I showed them my progress, and then they told me that I need to reformat it, that the template my school gave me to use was too "confusing". They then gave me an example of someone else's template and now I'm confused. I have to readjust to this new template and address all their commentary of edits I need to make and things I need to add. On top of having to now read through previous studies related to this journal club, and being still confused about the currently used treatment options.
This subject is my weakest and honestly I think choosing this rotation was a mistake. I haven't had any time to study for NAPLEX, midyear is in 2 weeks and I haven't even had the chance to create my list of residency programs. I have like 3 programs on my list. I haven't even started packing for the trip yet. I haven't finished my application. Nor have I had the chance to ask for recommendations. I am fucked.
and my health is so bad right now. For example: this week I had to stay up 48 hours, and last week it was over 72 hours...just to keep up with the work. I'm so sleep deprived I have to play I-spy games to stay awake when driving. I can hardly stay awake while I do these assignments which also adds on to why it takes me so long to complete. Can't focus if you're so sleepy, your brain starts coming up with incoherent thoughts while you're awake. It's funny, I thought the brain only did that when you're sleeping or falling asleep. And getting heart palpitations and flutters because of the sleep deprivation. Then getting heartburn, which because of the heart concerns, I have to now question if I'm getting a heart attack. Good thing my rotation is at a hospital, right?
For someone who is interested in this subject, the workload in this rotation is fine, but for someone like me who lacks the baseline knowledge to perform well on this rotation, it's a struggle to keep up. Barely surviving.

Can we get some preceptor, rung, ratchet, ultra Magnus headcanons with their human friend (Mtmte)
Perceptor
- Brainstorm is the only reason you to even meet because he wanted to show you something cool he made. Then Perceptor sees you dangerously close to a weapon Brainstorm made with no protective gear on, and he goes off on both of you (Brainstorm a little more). Perceptor ushers you out and tells you to wear protective gear next time, unknowingly giving you an unlimited invite.
- You come back frequently, with goggles, to see what’s going on in the lab. When he sees that you’re not going away, he throws together (and by that I mean very carefully crafted but he won’t admit it) some proper protective lab gear for you. He treats this like an inconvenience, but you and Brainstorm know that’s not the case.
- With the combined force of you and Brainstorm he finally gets out of the lab once in a while. He complains that this is a waste of his valuable time, but only in the beginning. After that he’ll go with it and try to have fun outside the lab. Still tries to sneak off after an hour or so, so keep a close eye on him.
Rung
- Being a lone human on a massive spaceship full of alien robots can be damaging to the human psyche so you were required to meet with Rung once a week (or however weeks in space work). You got an idea of how he was during your appointments, and you decide to try and get to really know him one night when you see him at the bar. He’s a little surprised but goes with it.
- He tries to keep the relationship professional, but when he sees that you genuinely do want to be friends he accepts it. You probably need a friend more than a therapist, right? Soon he finds himself seeking out your company outside of work to talk about model ships and other things.
- Also likes to look into your own personal interests. At the very least he’ll watch/read/attempt to do it, but sometimes he will actually get into it and then he’ll want to have in depth conversations about it with you. Be prepared because he will have intensely deep analyses over everything.
Ratchet
something like that here but with drift too
- Starts off just being your doctor because he’s the only medic on the ship who knows anything about human care, and it spirals into a weird friendship from there. Wittiness and a dry sense of humor in particular draws him in since he knows you’ll be able to take his grumpiness and not take it to heart and get offended by it.
- On his own he won’t seek you out that much, so you’ll have to come to him. It’s not that he doesn’t want to be around you, he’s just so busy that he either can’t find the time or he simply forgets. Don’t hold it against him, he honestly doesn’t mean to do that.
- Likes to ask you about how Earth was doing last you saw it. He doesn’t say it much, but he does miss some aspects of Earth here and there. Not often or strongly, but he likes hearing updates once in a while, especially revolving around technological and medical advancements.
Ultra Magnus
- No one knows why you’re drawn to him, and that includes himself. Now he’s got this tiny creature he could kill with a misstep following him around like a duckling and he does not know how to handle it. Might threaten you with a loitering charge if he gets annoyed (he won’t actually do it). If you persistently say that you just want to be his friend he’ll eventually get it.
- He’s going to info dump legalities and grammar on you like crazy. It can be somewhat educational, but he tends to do too much all at once so not a lot of it will stick and you may get overwhelmed. Just tell him to slow it down and that you got lost around statute 5783 and he’ll backtrack.
- Also enjoys teaching you Cybertronian, even if it is just a few words here and there. Primus help you if you use it incorrectly because he will spend hours explaining why that was wrong and it should actually be this. Refuses to teach you swears or insults. You are not going to use the education he’s giving you for that (Rodimus will teach you).

The biggest achievement our team accomplished this semester was creating an advocacy project and presenting our case to two very important government officials. Before we could do that, however, we had to research to place the information on our info graphic. We knew Telemedicine would be a solid sell, but we needed numbers to back up our advocacy attempt. The biggest thing we realized was Harnett County was well below the average on the Mental Health providers to population ratio.
This is significant. Our case we were trying to make is just because we have a rural geography doesn’t mean we should be depleted of providers. The average in North Carolina is 520:1 and the ratio for Harnett County is 1,470:1. That’s a significant difference and that’s where our inspiration came from.
One of the reasons we are skeptical if House Bill 721 is going to be passed is because of the difference of opinion in both Senator Burgin and Senator Lewis. Like I stated before, Senator Burgin thinks we should side more with the insurance companies and Representative Lewis sides more on the consumer and physicians aisle. Although those two are allies, they disagree greatly with the fine print on bill 721. Luckily for us, the day we presented our advocacy project to the Senator, he was going to try and bundle HB721 with another bill. He wanted to attempt this, because he could still support Telemedicine and keep his insurance supporting agenda.
In conclusion, we were able to find a need in Harnett County (Mental Health Providers and Mental Health access in General) and create a plan of attack for our opportunistic advocacy project. We did research on the numbers specific to Harnett County and North Carolina; then we placed those statistics on an info-graphic. We met and discussed HB721 with Senator Burgin and Representative Lewis. They told us their opinions and where they stand on the topic. They provided us feedback on how to better sell Telemedicine to other politicians and those who play an important role in implementing new policies. All in all Craig, our preceptor, was very proud of us and I think we made a positive impact on advocating for Telemedicine and HB721.

i so i’m practicing military time now. and i feel like since i talk about my feelings so much on here, that i can spill them out here as much as i feel. i’m just craving for that interaction without intentionally realizing itts. so i replied back to two messages friday evening (to guys). and realized i want to talk to more girlfriends tooos but fortunately my friend Hannah works with me night shifts except she’s part time because of school. And I’ve been adding and have been added as friends by my colleagues at work. One of them who very oddly resembles my ex ex before bc tall and lanky and very sarcastic and very filipino and cosplays with his wife and friends 😅 and when we’re at work hes supposed to be  the bedside shift report getting out of the day shift and i’d be the person he would report to bc nights.
And I guess because I’ve been updating my manager on things and letting her know my concerns and showing her consistency at work so far since my orientation training, I’ve also been updating my colleagues too but some of them (really only one or two of them 😒) enjoy gossiping about the other coworkers, mainly about my friend Hannah. It’s like you really have nothing better to do .-. Honestly if that patients were fine with her last night and only had one or two concerns that don’t involve YOU, and were just by their opinion or by pain even though your tech the previous night did everything they could and consistently ask for pain meds (even if theyre on scheduled ones AND not to mention even though I was on the brink of falling asleep the whole shift with only two hour sleeeps, I still saw and heard Hannah going in and out of the patients rooms during hourly rounding). On a serious note, this lady, Sylvia .-. she’s this thick african american accent who is also pretty new at work for about a month now from what my manager told me. She’s beautiful she’s this old lady with dark skin and hair braided and tucked half up/down. BUT, her manners during bedside shift report were not.
My point is, I can talk with these guys. We can be catty and shit talk about each other, as long as we’re still giving that care to the patient. I realized I’m still irritable if only having 2-4 hours of sleep a day, so I’ll try to take Tim’s advice (former uic classmate/ former one week or month crush/current friend ish who’s friends with Katherine 😅 bc out of the blue he messaged me a few days ago and we were talking about nursing and his passion for sticking needles into patients and drawing their blood lmao) and try to sleep RIGHT AFTER getting home from work and getting settled obviously. idk, I just naturally wake up at 11 or noon from those naps and end up going to sleep at 6. So i guess that would be 5 hours of sleep sometimes but broken up in between throughout the day. I would have to have my alarm set for 8;45. LATELY, I’ve been wanting to go to work at 9:30 and be there at that time and then clock in at 9:53, because of looking over the kardexes and seeing if theyre updated or not. Obviously my plains just end up with me coming in 3 minutes before 10 anyway :/ and just scribbling away patient info on my nursing sheets. And then try to jump immediately into bedside report. I think I’ll be more considerate and aware because I know the PT(patient) will want to sleep right after getting their VS and having used the bathroom, being repositioned, and feeling more comfortable in bed. Fortunately, most of the 13-bed patient rooms in ortho on my unit, are alert and oriented. Theres been times where we will get a few extra people who are diagnosed for GI bleed, Hx pneumonia or other iso precautions BUT along with an ortho surgical thing, or nausea, etc. Most of the time these extra patients can walk, and at night time just assist standby as needed and check on them hourly rounds and doing garbage and linens in between.
During the morning shift, our manager will be doing rounds on the patients and techs as well just like I’ve seen during my orientation training for mornings. She gave me a tip after orientation to make sure the room looks neat and tidy, even if they wanted to keep their linens in their room, make sure it all looks presentable, common sense etc. And then she’d go and ask how their night went, and depending if we’ve given them that care or not, then the most they’d complain about is just pain even if they’ve taken all their meds. And a tip she gave me for adjusting that pain, is maybe have a pillow underneath their surgical elbow to elevate it, or have a towel rolled up and put underneath the ankle/heel to relieve pressure. Offer to make sure their SCD’s are on and offer to reposition them. And the ones who are back surgicals (laminectomies) we’d have to make sure they get into bed safely and log roll them into position. So they’d have to trust their arms, elbows, and side of their bodies to maneuver themselves into bed, while we offer to support their legs or any part of their body to help them into bed. One of them the other day before my shift ended adn after bedside report, asked me if I would be working that evening again, and I told her sadly that i was off the weekend and she complimented me for my bedside care and was proud of herself that she was able to get back into bed and said her thanks for having given her a new gown to dress into because she was mostly sweating and getting cold/warm throughout the night. I had offered to change her linens at 3 in the morning because of a stain from her lower back dressing and made sure she knew that the nurse was informed also. And because she had her daughter come by yesterday there were a few chairs that kinda crowded the room so I made the space looked neater since she used a commode at the bedside.
I think I’m getting used to it it’s been a first week for me on the floor without a preceptor. Technically that was supposed to be my second week by myself, BUT I asked my manager if I could have another week to practice and be on the floor to get used to the routine and just have someone there to assist whenever I needed it. She commended me for being honest and reassured that it would be an excellent idea considering she wants me to feel comfortable and confident on the floor. And at least during nights we don’t have to remove foleys (if their foleys were removed during the day, we would just make sure if they havent been urinating after 6-8 hours consistently that we would have a hat in there and possibly day shift before their shift ends would do a bladder scan). And at least at night we wouldn’t have to do iv removals, UNLESS, the patient asks for it on the very morning like 3-4 a.m if they were concerned about it and just wanted it removed on the day theyre getting discharged. Like the other day I had to remove one because a patient of mine was getting discharged to go to westmoreland/ECF (similar to nursing home/rehab care until they can go home) and was hoping she’d get the best care there like she had with me and a few other techs. This was the same patient who also appreciated me sharing with her my stories about writing and reading for fun or for just student train in tutoring a few semesters ago. So far, after being asked how nights went by several people, I’ve kept some key information in mind like if they wanted to walk around in the middle of the night then let the nurse know and also let them walk if they need to. Obviously not on the day fresh out of surgery, but when PT/OT says it’s okay and walk with them too. And be sure to be considerate of trash and their posessions like making sure their overbed table wasn’t cluttered with old tissues or that theyre phone or their spirometer (instrument patients use to measure air capacity bc we’d also need their saturation to be at 92/93+) was in reach if they needed or out of reach.
So that was the gist of the first week, and then suddenly getting that message out of the blue by him. And it feels like earlier and yesterday I had all these thoughts running in my head about it or what-ifs like if I had been at uic longer and chosen to stay. Or etc. what-if in the future. I just wanted to write it down because it means something to me and having people from the past come back to you in a way where that interaction isn’t lost forever. I think what I learned from a couple of online classes and reading from lectures is at this certain age and before your 40′s, people tend to feel a lost of intimacy and identity still searching but that they try to fill in their time and everything. And I’m thankful at least he liked that I talked alot, as if I hadn’t talked about it in forever with someone and felt like I was just keeping it to myself and needed to spill what I felt. And he was glad he had someone to hear his thoughts and passions for perfusion and I think I just wanted insight on school and I think his parents are tryng to make him go back and do nursing. SOO if that’s the case, even though I told him to fight for what he wants to do, we might end up being in the same batch for nursing if I go to uic haha. Since i have the same plans to take anatomy at my school rn and a few other courses but for chamberlain or uic. It’s iffy right now and maybe there’s a chance as long as I have other schools backed up. I just like how after watching so many nursing and med student videos online, that it’s not too late to achieve your dreams, it’s not too late to start over 🌸☀️
