Do you like Eyeless Jack? Do you like gore, violence, and thrilling horror? Do you like homey vibes too?

I have just the thing for you! This fic (somehow) has all of this! From tags like hurt/comfort, to found family.

This fic is about Jack, who has hit his one year mark of working for The Tall One. Provided with a cabin, electricity, and protection, he is tasked with fixing up anyone who comes along. It's not in the job description to become familiar with them, but Jack can't help but hear their stories.

With reoccurring characters such as:

Toby Rodgers, Helen (The Bloody Painter) Otis, Tim Wright ("Masky"), Brian Thomas ("Hoodie"), Kate Hayes-Milens ("Kate the Chaser"), Cody (X-Virus) Unknown, and many more iconic characters.

(For those of you who have read it already, hi welcome to under the cut, the ad is over lol. I wanted to explain some stuff since Act 1 has ended.)

Act 1

Starting with Toby Rodgers, and ending with Kate Hayes-Milens, Act 1 is a calm, homey handful of chapters with intertwined hurt/comfort along with sting of horror.

Although Jack has only been in his cabin for a year now, he definitely has a handle on things.

Along with the end of Act 1, comes the start of a secondary fic called "I want to die with all my scars (and if they don't like the way we are then fuck them)" I know I do a lot of songs as titles, but they do actually have significance, I swear.

This fic, will have a lot of additional material from outside of Jacks cabin. At the end of Act 1 (spoiler for those who haven't made it there yet.) Kate visits and gives Jack a walkie talkie to communicate with the others outside of his small circle. This secondary fic is for things mentioned in the first one but not fully touched on.

For example, it's mentioned by Liu that Ben said the Hornets boys (Tim, Brian, and Toby) were on a road trip. That is one such things that will be talked about in this fic.

Silly little adventures with other characters that may change the dynamic between each other that wouldn't otherwise be I the central plot of the first fic.

This includes OCs! Pippa Darling, a character from a fic on ao3, will be popping up occasionally, and my own character Reed Carter.

You can even submit your own character to be in the two series. Just leave a comment with a link leading to their story, or a social media so I can contact you!

(If they're heavily leaning on or shipped with a popular ("canon" in heavy quotation) character, then I probably won't use it due to not wanting any shipping or big relationships in the story. Unless you happen to have a set of OCs.)

1. "Can I make fanart/fanfiction of HWGA?"

Yes! I encourage it! Just tag me so I can see it!

2. "Will [insert character] be in it?"

Most likely. If there's any requests, then I'll probably write for them too!

3. "What does Jack look like?"

Jack in this fic is more of a metaphor than a person. I'll let you choose what that means to you, but this also means that Jack can look like whatever you wish him to. Any "official art" I make for the series won't even have a consistent design for Jack because that's not the point. See Jack however you'd like, because he's supposed to be a source of comfort in anyway you, and his patients, see fit. You'll notice that that's why I've never outright described what he looks like. Be creative. :)

4. "Where/when does this take place?"

That's sort of a spoiler as of now. It's connected to "The Path of Black Leaves" which was made/coined by the slenderblogs here on tumblr, which is a a mode of transportation. But for a simple answer, kind of in New England.

As for when, it's taming place sometime in the mid 2000's

My in-depth-ish thoughts about Paper Mario TTYD

There will be mega spoilers so don't read if you haven't finished or are interested in getting into it. Also mega yapping, I am the yapper

I thought it was overall pretty fun! I enjoyed it. I'll talk about the battle mechanics first then the story.

My first experience with the Mario RPG games was with Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, so I was a little surprised that the command inputs are a little less involved? I was also surprised by the lack of moves, especially for the partners. I think M&L's moveset is a little more fun honestly, but the ones here are also pretty interesting! It's surprising to see that Vivian's is a little more complicated compared to the others too (using more buttons than tilt the joystick or the a & b buttons). I also really like the Superguard and Guarding system, kind of brutal but it's a nicer idea than just being able to jump over attacks like in M&L.

It was also surprising that you don't really raise your attack through experience, but by getting BP's and using badges that increase Attacks (WHICH COST 6BP EACH!!!!). It's a nice idea! It makes it more strategy and and a little more skill based I think, though I couldn't help shake off the feeling that I wasn't doing enough to increase my attack power. But overall the battle system is nice.

Story wise, it's pretty fun and cute. I will say that it's biggest drawback is the amount of backtracking, good GOD there's so much. It's so bad that I can't even pick a favorite chapter. I can for sure pick segments but I can't pick a favorite chapter honestly. I think they're all pretty equal.

Uhmmm Chapter 1 is cute, Chapter 2 is cute as well but good fucking god I HATTEEDDD going around the tree, it was awful. Chapter 3.... I was surprised to hear it was really well liked, and I can understand why, but I felt like the climb went on a little too long. I was also surprised to see how small the island is... I thought it'd be bigger or at least bustling with a lot of NPCs.

Chapter 4 is one I really looked forward to because I love Boo's and I've heard about Doopliss so I was excited to see him, and good god I think the town part of the Chapter brings it down a lot in terms of memorability. LIKE.... WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO THE FIGHT WITH SHADOW PEACH AND WHEN IT WAS SHOWING THE CRYSTAL STARS GOING THROUGH EVERY CHAPTER LOCATION..... AND THEY ONLY SHOWED THE MOM AND MAYOR TALKING BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WAS IN THAT CHAPTER.... LMFAOFJDSIFGHUIREHGUJN

LIKE AT LEAST THE OTHER CHAPTERS HAD MEMORABLE CHARACTERS.... THIS ONE THEY DGAF. Big Boo fight is super cute though, love love love it, I don't know if the other chapters had secret bosses like it? Also the Boo's in this game are totes cute, I love how Boo's were drawn in the early-mid 2000s god

ANYWAYS, Chapter 5 is... fun. I'm not a big fan of pirate themes but I WILL SAY, I LOVE CORTEZ he's so fun and love his design. I really like that his earrings tie down his jaw and head together since it's papercraft. I also really like Bobbery, the thing with his wife was really sweet.

Chapter 6 is... a chapter 8E83RHWFIUEFGERGER. OK WELL NO I usually like train mystery stuff. I enjoyed Sonic Murder Mystery a lot, but the early part of the train stuff was kind of a slog to get through... Unfortunately I think I've seen the Poshley Heights part before from a long time ago, but it was mainly getting to the Crystal Star rather than Doopliss and the 2 sh*dows. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEM FOR BEING MEAN TO DOOPLISS AND VIVIAN!!!!! MARK YOUR WORDS BELDAMMMMM

I enjoyed Chapter 7 a lot actually, maybe I can call it my favorite chapter. I think the music for the X-Nauts Fortress slams nuts a lot and definitely heightened my experience for it. I also like TEC a whole lot, I don't think I've mentioned that yet but I'll talk about the Bowser and Peach segments later.

Chapter 8 visually is definitely a highlight. I absolutely love how it looks. I can't say much about the actual areas itself though. The tower was pretty nice I guess, the puzzles are easy, though. I will punch Beldam for being mean to Doopliss. And the fight with Shadow Peach was hard! At least for me. I came in without upgrading my whole party and trying to get through it with Yoshi and Bobbery and boy did I get sweeped. I went back and upgraded Goombella and we traded Power Lifts and beat her up and saved the world the end. I did like that it was the toughest boss you've met yet and not only that, I think the only one with over 100 HP? (I don't know about Gloomtail and Hooktail since I didn't have Peekaboo enabled on)

For the Bowser and Peach segments, the Peach ones are really sweet and TEC is super sweet. I am upset that Mario didn't tell Peach his last wish on screen IT MADE ME SO MADDDDD.

Bowser's is really funny, I love love love him and Kammy they're such a funny duo. Also I can't lie, the 2D segments with Bowser really felt like Flash ripoffs from the web to a T LMFAOOOO. I will say I was a little surprised how uninvolved he actually is with the story. A little disappointing but honestly, I wouldn't change the story at all.

Oh also everything visually was so fucking beautiful, and the soundtrack slams cheeks

Sorry for the long yap but TTYD was really fun, definitely worth the time I poured into it (Nearly put 30 hours into it and still adding more since I haven't done the pit yet at all). I'll play the original Paper Mario next since I am interested in Lady Bow and the baking scene that I watched oomf do and fucked up 5 million times to poison the toad.

Probably the last time I'll talk about TTYD though since I don't have any other thoughts, unless the pit changes my life somehow.

Just read thr latest chapters (10 and 11) of your wobbly hearts au and I've got a question about the lore/how soulmarks work

And if you cant answer all or part of it because it would spoiler stuff later that's totally fine!

Anyway:

I've been wondering for a while how someone with different soulmates differentiate who they're talking to if they're not all each otbers soulmates. Like Nya is soulmates with Jay, but Jay is also soulmates with Cole, Zane, (and Kai). So if jay writes something meant for Nya, what keeps it from being seen Cole or Zane? Or Do they see it?

Thanks to chp 11 we know that some soulmarks are different, that Skylors apparently show exclusively on her back. But is it still the "what you write on your skin shows up on them" just located on the back or is it a different kind of mark?

(Is that what Lloyd's is like too? He mentioned soemthing about his being hard to read/understand what it meant)

I'm just fascinated by how the different soulmarks work and didnt know if it would be expanded on or not later in the fic (if so, feel free to leave us in suspense lol)

i kinda forget sometimes that i don't explain the soulmarks thing very well in the fic itself lol, i got so distracted angsting Kai i low-key forgot the actual worldbuilding

Jay and Nya just have matching marks for soulmarks: stormcloud with lightning on their wrists if i remember correctly. Nya has another nameless soulmate that she writes to. There isn't usually an overlap in types of soulmarks if that makes sense.

As for Lloyd: he doesn't actually have soulmarks! (to his knowledge.) He's never gotten one, never seen one. But then again he's never really looked or tried to contact his soulmates since he's scared that they'll hate him for who and what he is. I actually am working on a Lloyd-focused fic to address that specifically (and also the elemental powers of the group) I don't know if it'll go anywhere but it is indeed in the works!

Shuichi is just thinking oh god what the hell am I about to compete in - if it’s wrestling I swear -

But man, Shuichi is determined to get his bearings ASAP. To what end, Shuichi? To what end? 

“Because I’m totally okay with it if you are. In fact, I think the genre we’ve shifted into requires a half-to-full episode of reminiscing about all the hardships we’ve overcome to get to this moment! Preferably via montage with our OP song playing in the background!”

I think we actually were talking about the position Kaito would take as an astronaut, and pilot was mentioned as a strong possibility - so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to see it up here! Yeah... hotshot pilot really does go well with Kaito’s character, doesn’t it...

“Hold up fellow rival I’m totally monologuing right now ANYWAY AS I WAS SAYING -”

Honestly though does anyone else find it hilarious that Shuichi’s absolute confusion didn’t break Kaito’s immersion in the fantasy in the slightest?

I do love the word ‘eccentric’ for Kaito, because it honestly wouldn’t have been the first thing to come to mind for me - but I guess to Shuichi, who is so withdrawn in himself and anxious all the time, an aggressively positive extrovert who chases his ambitions and believes in himself/everyone around him so strongly would be a completely alien concept to him! I actually think that it’s the fact that Kaito believes in Shuichi so strongly, and not just in himself, that throws Shuichi off the most, too!

So, um, did you guys have judges giving you scores? Was this done in private or via actual accredited competition? It’s clearly not a traditional race based on speed, so...

Assuming this fantasy is one that’s being judged by other people (because once again I’m thinking about the fantasy scenarios way too seriously), I can sort of see this taking place in the hangar before they go into their planes. So Kaito spots his rival pilot and confronts him, because this will be their last time competing together and chances are he’s just realizing how significant the ‘rival’ pilot has been in his life.... hm ~ 

Oh! He’s getting serious!

It is their way of connecting. What else will they have once the competition is put to rest?

Kaito is going to have to confront the fact that all of the people he’s trying to nurture and help grow will be left behind once he goes into space, though. I... suppose this is hinting at that, just a little bit. He dreams big, but big dreams come with sacrifices.

But, of course, then he wouldn’t be able to ever achieve his dream of going to space.

S... Shuichi, you do remember that you aren’t actually the pilot he’s ‘talking’ to, right? It does seem significant that Shuichi is losing himself to the role, though. Has he done that in any of the other events? Minus Kokichi’s of course, considering the fact that Shuichi was himself in that one, I haven’t noticed anything on this level from the ones I’ve done so far. And with that said, you could easily read into it as Shuichi commenting on their training nights together. They do seem like the only times Shuichi has been legitimately happy - outside of his time with Kaede, of course.

Ah, that stings a bit. 8′D This is a pretty good reminder that, despite me loving the ship so much, Kaito’s perfect fantasy is not Shuichi - or at least, not Shuichi as he is now. Actually, I know the game is pushing for potential Maki!endgame but I think Kaede might fit the bill better. I remember noticing it a lot in the first chapter (and... uh, low-key shipping them tbh), but Kaito always seemed really impressed by Kaede, and whenever Kaito was about to chip in with what I imagined to be a big friendship/supportive-type speech about ‘never giving up!’ and ‘believe in your friends!’, Kaede would always beat him to the punch... and yet Kaito never seemed to feel threatened by her. They’re both pretty headstrong, and Kaede did strike me as being competitive in her own way - honestly, as a rarepair ship they would work really well together!

With that said, I can imagine Shuichi’s fantasy involving someone supporting them through all his worries (COUGHKAITOCOUGHKAEDE) so... you know. It almost feels like Shuichi is getting to live out a bit of his own fantasy situation right here - being in a position where he can hold his own against Kaito, and where Kaito recognizes him as an equal while still being his supportive self, with his eyes only on him...

also I feel like I should note, just because Shuichi isn’t Kaito’s ultimate ideal doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be up there. In fact, I’d argue that Kaito’s big thing is raising people up to the level where they can be as confident in themselves as he is in them, and in himself. Maybe in the future when Shuichi reaches that level Kaito could see something more in him? okay maybe not in the game canon but post-game fan material wink wink nudge nudge guys plz

Ah, so he is able to move on. Whelp, Kaito is officially in a better mental state than me, hoarder of physical items, internet tabs and memories lmao

All jokes aside, it is pretty impressive to be able to work towards your goal with such determination. I can understand why Kaito could probably grate on a few people playing this, but I really find that sort of attitude impressive.

.... Quick question. Is Kaito saying ‘man’ as general slang or is he acknowledging Shuichi as a man? As in, Kaito is confirmed to be at least bi under the right (shounen) circumstances? I’M JUST ASKING... FOR SCIENCE...

Shuichi just remembered that he isn’t an actual pilot, huh. 8′D Just pilot with your mind, sweet cheeks! You already drive brain cars; surely a plan can’t be that big of a jump, right?

This is basically the closest Kaito can get to a confession, huh?

It’s interesting to get it at this point, after the reveal of the disease he has. It’s another clear indicator that Kaito has trouble being honest with other people about vulnerabilities despite him doing his best to encourage other people to rely on him. And it’s strange, because he’s fully honest and eager about his own ambitions and passions! And love itself is a passion of sorts, but this is the type of thing that requires a certain level of vulnerability, and it’s also something where he doesn’t have full control over his destiny the way he does over his other goals - if the person doesn’t love you back, then there’s very little you can do about it. I hesitate to go so far as to say that he has a fear of rejection, but he definitely doesn’t want to be the one to say ‘I’m in love with you’ before the other person does, as far as I can tell...

“Quite literally, actually. See, look!”

But man, Shuichi is literally acknowledging the situation he’s in (dubious as it is lmao) and knows that there’s a 99% chance that Kaito wants to confess to his feelings to ‘him’. Shuichi, you do realize what a powerful position you have right now, right?

So I guess the question is whether Shuichi is hesitating because he doesn’t feel the same way, he just doesn’t want to take advantage of the situation... or whether Shuichi wants to earn that confession as ‘himself’, and not just as some fictional ideal manufactured by the power of the room they’re in. I suppose that depends on the viewer!

I’ve made it pretty clear that I’ve been shipping them for a while so, uh, you all probably know how I want to read it, but there is plenty of room for other interpretations too ~ they do have a fantastic bro-ship going on too!

Aaaah, Kaito :( I have a feeling that while he’d be willing to pursue a gay relationship with pilot!Shuichi, he understands how unusual that would be in ‘that world’. I wonder if that means he would be that open and understanding with his own sexuality if it ever came up in-game? He doesn’t seem to be struggling with his own feelings in the sense of ‘oooh ~ forbidden love ~’, but rather the idea of his rival’s own feelings being returned.

Between Kokichi’s love key and this one, Shuichi is a mess.

Ooh, maybe I was wrong? He’s psyching himself up to do a proper confession after all!

Well, adrenaline does have a way of ramping up all of your emotions! Aaaw, Kaito looks so excited! Rain or shine, rejection or no, he’s officially decided to come clean after all!

NO SHUICHI TAKE SOME INITIATIVE

This is the one issue they have in the game too - Shuichi is relying on Kaito to do all the emotional and communication-based heavy-lifting, and it means that Shuichi won’t press Kaito on the issues that need to be pressed in his attempt to stay in Kaito’s good graces. Aaah, I’m so worried about my boys...

“BE THE SHOUNEN RIVAL YOU WERE MEANT TO BE, SHUICHI!”

“I’m already being a stand-in for the original protagonist, what else do you want from me?!”

“It’s how I get turned on, okay?”

“It’s what - ?!”

“I-I mean fired up! Yeah, I totally meant fired up...!”

This is the gayest competition-based ship I’ve seen since Yowamushi Pedal’s Toumaki

You would like it to be that way, huh? Man, I do wish we could see some of the consequences of these nights in the interactions during the game, but I guess what would be super tricky to program and, uh, game-breaking... but I suppose that’s what fanfiction is for, right? 8′D

I really didn’t expect this to be so enlightening on the two of them as characters though, and their platonic relationship as well as their shipping potential! This may be up with Kokichi’s as one of my favourites ~

summary- Being in the hospital sucks, being in a medical bay on a spaceship was worse. Though waking up to see Mark stayed with you made it decent. It becomes better when Mark comforts you and eventually you comfort him too.

TWS- Hospital (not technically but still), kinda mentions of needles. (I don't go into detail but there is an IV so there is a needle),mention of headache from injury, gunshots ( dream and doesn't go into detail) a dead body. (WKM and not described.) hurt/comfort. So some updates on me!!!! In the month of June, I'm gonna be on vacation a lot. My long-distance partner of over a year and a half is coming to my hometown and we're gonna meet IRL for the first time finally. Then after like a week after that, I'm going to the beach. and in between is Pride. So this is shorter but it's only because I'm writing some stuff to post if I decided not to write on vacation. Also, I am working on request I promise!!!! I'll try to post the next one some time during the week!

Very slight spoilers for Who Killed Markiplier, but if you skip the italicized part and continue reading you'll be fine.

The pain left your head as you accepted the anesthetic. Your vision went dark and all you felt was the cold pain in your chest. Not the pain from cyro, a different pain. 

Images flashed into your vision,

An impressive mansion, friendly faces, poker chips, a lifeless body, yelling, a broken wine bottle, a woman shrouded in light, and groundsmen.

Pain. Fear. 

A gunshot, another gunshot. 

Falling. 

Then darkness. Darkness who held familiar smiles, and a broken mirror. 

The pain in your chest grew, and as you looked down you saw a gunshot wound in your chest. When you look up you see only a broken mirror, but it shows the mansion. You were alone.

No, not anymore. You had Mark.

The mirror disappeared from your vision and the pain left your chest. Warmth returned to your body as you slowly opened your eyes. You saw the bright lights of the medical room as you took a deep breath. 

You looked down to see yourself in a hospital gown and with an IV in your hand. Your vision shifted from yourself to your left. 

You held a weak smile as you saw a sleeping Mark in the chair next to you, head on the bed you laid on. 

He didn't leave you.

Your smile grew as you moved your hand testing to see how well you could move it. It felt a little weird but you could manage. You slowly raised your hand and gently ran your fingers through his dark hair. You admired his face, looking handsome even when he was tired. His eyes had bags under them, but his face looked so peaceful like this.

His hair is soft, even though it looked a bit disheveled and dirty. You moved his hair out of his face. You hoped he had taken care of himself while you were out. Seems like he didn't do the best job if he even did.

You continued to run your hands through his hair. Eventually, his eyes slowly opened, shooting open when he saw you were awake. 

“Captain.” He softly said leaning up from the bed and gently holding your hand. His voice was deeper and more hoarse, it was cute.

Your throat was dry, but you softly whispered, 

“You stayed.” He nodded his head and took the hand he was holding and pressed a kiss to it. 

“ I always will,” Mark stated. 

You lifted your hand to cradle his face, your thumb running over his slightly overgrown beard. Mark turned his head to place a kiss on your wrist, before asking,

“How are you feeling?” His eyes held worry as he waited for your answer. As you tried to muster up an answer you started to cough. 

Your throat horse and dry. You pointed over to a water bottle silently asking him to grab it. Mark quickly grabbed the water bottle and opened it for you. He handed it to you. As you tried to lift the bottle your hands shook. The feeling of the Iv on the other hand was weird and it wasn't comfortable to move it too much. 

Mark quickly held to the bottle, asking, 

“ Can I help you?” you nodded and he brought the bottle to your mouth and gently tipped it back lettering the cold water flow down your throat. He pulled the water away and placed it on the side table. 

“Thanks,” you mumbled, a throbbing headache coming along. He nodded, 

“ You feeling okay?” he asked softly. You let out a soft laugh, 

“Well other than the headache and fatigue, I feel fine Mark,” you said with a shrug, at the mention of your head pain Mark started to go press the button for the nurse. Before he could you reached out and held his hand. He looked up at you in surprise.

“Not yet, I-” You blushed a bit, “I wanna enjoy being alone with you while I can.” He nodded with a smile, sitting on the edge of the bed and holding your hand. 

“ I’d like that too, but if your headache gets bad tell me okay.” he agreed. You smiled and nodded your head, 

“I can do that,” you said, feeling Mark’s thumb rubbing your hand. 

Mark’s eyes softened and sadness invaded them as he looked at your tired form. 

“Mark?” you asked and he shook his head slightly knowing what you were gonna ask him. 

“I’m fine captain, I just-” He took a deep breath, “ I hate seeing you like this.” he closed his eyes for a moment. 

“ I was so scared I was gonna lose you.” he confessed, “ I have never felt such an intense fear before. When I saw you on the ground I felt like a star crashed down on me. I was more scared seeing you hurt, than when I almost died.” he moved your hand up to hold his cheek. 

“ I can’t lose you.” He mumbled as he looked into your eyes, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. 

“You won’t lose me, There's nothing in the universe that could keep me from being with you.” You let out a soft laugh, “ I’d sucker punch death in the face if I had to. I’m not going anywhere, Mark.” 

As you finished a few tears fell from Mark’s eyes, a soft smile on his face. You wiped the tears from his cheeks. You stayed in that position for a minute or two, you both yearning for each other. 

You removed your hand from his face, hurt covered his face for a second until he saw you scooting over to make room in the hospital bed. 

“Please lay with me,” you asked softly, It would be a tight fit but your body ached to be held by Mark. You both needed to know each other wasn't going to leave. 

 He nodded and gently climbed in next to you. He wrapped his arm around you, your head on his chest. Your body turned slightly into his body, partially laying on him. He took your free hand in his and held it. 

You both laid there for about 10 minutes before you started to drift off. You snuggled closer to Mark, and he let out a soft laugh before whispering, 

“Get some sleep baby, I’ll be here when you wake up.” You slowly drifted off into sleep, the last thing you felt was Mark’s lips on your forehead and he whisper something. You felt warm, and safe falling asleep. Your headache was still there but not as bad, 

Things weren’t so bad as long as you were with Mark. 

God, you loved that man so much.

Ten years have passed since the events of The Killing Moon. Imperial Kisua rules the once peaceful and deadly city-state of Gujaareh. But war stirs on the horizon. Wanahomen, the exiled heir to the Sunset Throne, seeks to reclaim his disgraced father's legacy. And with his unexpected allies-- the so-called barbaric Banbarra tribes--he might just succeed.

To assist his gambit for the throne, the priesthood of Hananja sends two of their own into the Banbarra canyonlands. Hanani, the first female trainee of the order, has to contend with an unfamiliar culture and the arrogant whims of the Prince in order to succeed. But her greatest challenge comes from her self-doubt-- and events that will challenge the very core of her faith.

Meanwhile, a mysterious plague strikes Gujaareh. Transmitted through dreams, it afflicts nearby sleepers and casts them into an endless nightmare. If they are to retake the city, Hanani and Wanahomen must find the disturbing source of the sickness before it's too late.

Full review, some spoilers, and content warnings under the cut.

Content warnings for the book: Some sexual content. Domestic/child abuse. R*pe via inc*st and threatened/attempted r*pe. Graphic violence (including police brutality), murder, warfare, body horror, and death (including child death). Structural/social misogyny and ableism are discussed and challenged to varying degrees.

I'm in the minority when it comes to The Shadowed Sun. While there are aspects of the novel that I really enjoyed, I had a hard time getting into the story. My main issue is that there were three separate plotlines, but they didn't really connect to each other until the last third or so of the book. The primary plot was also the one I found the least interesting, which didn't help. A lot of this is personal preference; I'll go into specifics below.

Unlike my experience with The Killing Moon, characterization was one of the strongest parts of the book for me. Sunandi and Nijiri returned as important side characters rather than leads, and I found I liked both of them more in this story. They were even sort of friends after ten years, which was fun when compared to their tense and mildly antagonistic dynamic in the last book. 

Instead, The Shadowed Sun starred newcomer Hanani and Wanahomen--a very minor character from The Killing Moon. What's interesting about these two is neither were especially likeable characters to start. Hanani initially came off as painfully timid, submissive, and naïve. Wanahomen began as an arrogant, sexist asshole. But both of them went through significant emotional development over the story, and I really liked the sheer character growth. 

Wanahomen in particular was a hard sell for me, but Jemisin put in the work. He did let go of some of his worst traits pretty easily-- like his hatred of the Hetawa and reverence for his father-- considering that they were beliefs he'd held for most of his life. I'm also a little torn on his eventual romantic relationship with Hanani, due to a particularly horrible act of his that she quickly forgave. But ultimately I chose to let these details slide because I liked his arc. Hanani took me a little longer to appreciate, as she spent most of the novel in various states of emotional trauma. But her arc of self-acceptance and reclaiming her womanhood was SO cathartic by the end. Their eventual banter-filled dynamic reminded me strongly of Sophie and Howl from book!Howl’s Moving Castle. Of all things. 

I also appreciated the stronger focus on narcomancy and dream worlds, which were sadly lacking in The Killing Moon. It was cool to see more firsthand perspective on the workings of dream magic. In particular, the nightmare world during the climactic chapter of the book was disturbing, imaginative, and emotional. That entire chapter just slapped from start to finish-- I loved that the solution was ultimately kindness and compassion. 

There were lots of small details I liked as well. The Banbarra being loosely based on the Anasazi was really cool to me on a personal level. Cliff dwellings! Fuck yeah! What other novel can I read that has fantasy!Egyptians and fantasy!Anasazi interacting with each other? Wanahomen's daydreams served as a subtle but important hint for later stuff, which was cool. The theme of fatherhood at its worst and best--and all the complicated emotions that entails--was something that didn't hit me until after I finished the book. The title is a fucking pun, so thanks for that. I was also surprised to see a mostly happy ending in an otherwise dark series.

A lot of my struggle with the book came down to pacing. As I mentioned, there were three story threads. There was Hanani and Wanahomen hanging out in a canyon. There was miscellaneous political intrigue around the upcoming coup in Gujaareh. And finally there was Tiaanet's story + the magic dream plague + its disturbing source. But the primary story was the canyon one... which I just didn’t find interesting. Lots of sitting around, cultural clashes, and horrific personal trauma. This was fine for a while, but once I reached the 2/3rd mark, I struggled to get through it. The plots also felt disconnected from one another until the end, so scenes from the two more interesting stories seemed sudden and sporadic. It tied together pretty well in the strong last third of the book. But there was a long investment to reach that point. 

There was also a lot of r*pe in this book; way more than anything I've read by Jemisin. On a literary level, I get it. A central theme in this book is misogyny, and there's lots commentary around that. Both Gujareen and Banbarra society revere women in different ways, yet they have very limited social roles. Sexual violence happens regardless of how much women are supposedly admired by their cultures. And in the book, it was rightfully portrayed as disgusting and traumatic. But this content was emotionally exhausting and uncomfortable. It's probably the main reason it took me so long to get through the book. Tiaanet's arc was especially disturbing, though it ended in a very cathartic way. 

So yeah, mixed feelings on this one. In terms of themes and ideas, The Shadowed Sun did a lot right; so I can't justify anything lower than a 7. But story-wise, I really liked the last third of the book and kind of wished the rest was like that. Jemisin's writing usually clicks with me more, so this was an odd exception. If you're interested in this series, it's not for the faint of heart. Please mind the warnings on both this and my review of The Killing Moon.

Summary- When you wake up again you are quickly thrown back into being the captain. You also have to deal with the fact you are on bed rest for the next couple of days. You also have to deal with the fact that Burt now knows about whatever is going on between you and Mark.

update- So only a couple days until I met my long-distance s/o for the first time after a year and a half! I'm so excited. Though I won't be writing when they are up here I have some stuff queued up for this week/ weekend. I don't know if I'll have the next chapter done this weekend! I'm going on vacation a week after my s/o leaves, but I'll probably write there lol. Just updates lol.

The next time you woke up in the med bay, it wasn't as nice as the first time You heard the voices of CC and Gunther arguing over something and the buzz of the medics working. You let out a small groan, and the arguing stopped as they went to look at you. 

You opened your eyes and winced a bit. Once your eyes adjusted to the light you looked around and saw your crew leads. The first person you saw was Mark who sat on the edge of your bed, holding your hand. Then your eyes trailed over to where Gunther leaned on the bedside table, CC right across from him. At the foot of your bed was Burt being Burt. 

“You feeling okay captain?” Mark asked softly, gripping your hand. 

“Yeah, I feel a lot better. Though I do still have my headache, Though I think I have it because I woke up to arguing” You answered giving a look to Gunther and CC.

Gunther looked away and rubbed the back of his neck. CC turned bright red and quickly said, 

“I am so sorry captain, I just needed to get through Gunther's thick head that we can't-” she stopped when you raised your other hand. 

“It’s fine, just try not to yell at each other in Med bay. You could disturb the other patients.”

you said and they nodded. You then looked at Mark, 

“How's everyone else? I saw quite a few people injured before I went out,” you asked, He smiled. Well, that was a good sign.

“Nothing too serious, the worst case was a few broken bones and CC’s hypothermia, but as you can see she's feeling fine.” You nodded with a small smile, 

“Good, I'm glad you're okay CC.” You said and she quickly replied with a thank you.

“What's the state of the ship?” you asked. You trusted your crew leads, but things could happen. 

“Everything is working and everything is on schedule, Glad you're okay Captain ” Burt answered, and you gave a smile to him. 

“Well, I’m glad you guys didn't burn down the ship while I was out. Good job guys, I'm very proud of all of you.” You complimented them. 

“Of course cap’n, you get some rest and we'll take care of everything else,” Gunther stated with an unlit cigar in his mouth (They wouldn't let him light it in medical). 

The head doctor walked up to your little group. She cleared her voice, getting everyone's attention. 

“Well good news is that you don't have a concussion, Bad news is that we had to give you stitches for your head wound. “She said, closing the notebook. 

“It’d be best if you rest and stay here for a few days so we can keep an eye on those stitches. If it would be more comfortable we could move you to your quarters.” She explained. You nodded your head, 

“If possible I’d like to be moved to my quarters. Thank you, doctor.” You answered as she nodded and moved on. You let out a small sigh. 

“So it looks like I’ll be bed-bound for a bit. I’ll still be able to do remote work, but for anything else, I’ll have you report to Mark. He has the same security clearance as me.” You explained. You saw Mark beamed with the pride of you trusting him so much. CC had a confused and surprised look on her face. 

“Captain, you can’t be serious. “ She said. You raised an eyebrow replying, 

“I am dead serious Celcionna, Mark is my right hand and I trust him with my life. I expect you all to treat him the same way you treat me.” 

You had a stern look on your face, hand gripping mark’s as a surprised (but happy) expression fell on his face. CC's eyes widened and she looked away. You only used her full name when you were pissed and she knew this. She lowered her head and mumbled, 

“Yes, captain.”  You nodded and looked over at Mark as the others started to leave the room. Burt winked at you both and closed the privacy curtains on his way out. 

You looked at Mark with a confused look, He had a sheepish smile and said, 

“Burt found me cuddled up next to you in the bed. I was able to get him to promise not to tell anyone, but only after he gave me a 30-minute monologue about love.” He ended with a small laugh, which you joined. 

You both came to a stop as you met eyes. He moved closer, placing a hand on your cheek. 

“I’m glad your okay captain.” He softly stated, rubbing your cheeks. You smiled and leaned into him. 

“Thanks for coming to my rescue handsome,” you replied, a bright blush covering his face. He grinned, 

“Always for you captain.” he softly stated. You took his hand from his face and held it in yours. You rubbed your thumb over his knuckles. You shyly looked away before saying, 

“You know I wouldn't have minded if Burt had told a few people.” Mark let out a soft laugh, 

“ I don’t think Burt could only tell a few people, but.” He hesitated, “ I don’t think I would have minded much, either,” he said. He beamed at you before finishing, 

“Though I’d much prefer it if people found out from us.”You turned back to look at him, 

“Me too, Mark,” you said before the doctor came back in. Mark stood up from the bed. The doctor and Mark helped you into a wheelchair and moved you to your quarters. 

You smiled as you were finally back “Home”. They had moved your normal bed somewhere else and had put the medical bed. The doctor rambled off about things you shouldn't do and what you could do as Mark lifted you into the bed and helped you adjust. You nodded and thanked the doctor and she left. 

Now it was just you and Mark alone. You looked up at him as he once again sat down next to you. 

“I think it’s about time we talked about us.” You softly said, grabbing Mark’s hand and letting him know you meant no ill intentions. He smiled, 

“Yeah, us.”
