so about the choice in act 3. I feel like the writers wanted to do the suicide mission from me2 AND the companion choice from me1. which clashes at its core because the whole point of the me2 mission was that if you did all the companion quests and worked for it, you could keep everyone alive. and I get wanting the shock of having one of the companions die no matter what, but at this point in the game after the obvious set up, it just feels like one of those haHA surprise! moments

then there's the fact that it's between davrin and harding. the black man and the fan favourite from dai. like it feels so stacked against davrin at that point.

I picked davrin first, and then I went back and picked harding, thinking maybe that was the right choice to keep her alive. and here's where the whole choice gets even worse for me, because harding, instead of using her stone magic, the actual thing that would give her an advantage against ghilan'nain, she climbs up to the exact same spot as davrin, and uses her bow. she tries to use arrows against a giant multi-limbed blight enhanced being. it's stupid! of course she dies!

I had expected that if you picked harding, she would use her stone magic, which would distract ghilan'nain because of the history with the titans, giving lucanis enough time to act. it would have worked really well as a continuation of her character arc, and it would tie into her personal quest in a way that would make it clear that the effort we put into doing that was what makes the difference.

but by not doing that and having her die no matter what, it instead feels like it doesn't make sense. davrin, at least, is just a man with a sword. his death here makes sense because he's against impossible odds.

which brings it back to feeling really bad that the choice was between him and harding. because for this sacrifice / loss to make sense, it feels it should be davrin. for this narrative beat to make sense, it should be davrin dying.

it feels like the writers are saying: the correct choice here is davrin. he's the only companion who should die no matter what. to signpost this at the moment you make this choice, we will have the other choice be the fan favourite from dai. because no one will want to risk her potentially dying.

it feels bad. it feels racist. davrin deserved better.

with the new snippets of info about Bellara from the other day (she sounds amazing, i love her sm already and can't wait to interact with her and learn more about her!), and knowing that bw tends to write characters in one group of companions with different lenses and perspectives on things in the world, it makes me really curious about Davrin too. he's the companion that represents they Grey Warden faction ofc, but he's also an elf, and it looks like he also has vallaslin. Bellara represents "this yearning to find the truth of who the elves were" after what was lost. I'm curious about what Davrin's thoughts about the past, the present and future are, and about how he personally relates to elven culture. what do he and Bellara share similar perspectives on, and what do they have differing thoughts about? what are his thoughts on elven gods from millennia ago roaming around again? maybe either he or Bellara was originally a City Elf who then joined the Dalish [like Pol] and then got vallaslin [like Strife]? and within the context of The Veilguard, maybe Davrin joins the team because these new red lyrium darkspawn (and associated Blight corruption) are spreading everywhere and he feels a sense of responsibility or duty about it as a Warden?

What each of the Companions smells like to Taash:

Pure headcanon but it's been rattling around in my brain for a bit so wanted to share.

Lucanis: Coffee (duh). Moonlit nights in autumn. Distantly of a river or water, and something otherworldly that can't be placed.

Emmrich: Dead and dying flowers. Old stone that has stood for hundreds of years. Early morning mist.

Harding: Sunshine. Distantly of the wood her bow is made of, and of thin, mountain air. There's something joyous about her smell, just like there is something joyous about her.

Neve: A million scents in one like a city, where everyone touches everyone else: Hal's fish, the smell of perfume Maevaris uses, the salt of the ocean at the docks. Ice, powerful, cold, biting, and enduring. A bit like ink and parchment from old notes.

Bellara: Forests under the spring sky, with buds in the trees and birds singing. Distantly of metal, and distantly of old magic. A flower that is blooming despite the environment it finds itself in. There's a certain sorrow to her scent that she's trying to hide.

Davrin: Leather and metal first, then wood. Lots of different types of wood - pine, oak, ash - anything he uses to craft. Smells like Assan too, like the warmth of his feathers when you wrap your arms around him, and the feeling of his purrs. There's something determined and unyielding about his scent - he's built to endure.

Bonus, my Rook, cause I said so: Incense. Like Emmrich, the scent of mist is there. There's something that doesn't seem quite lively about it, like it should belong to a dead person. Despite this, the scent is inviting and welcoming, and Taash has taken comfort in it.

I've been picking mostly only the essential flirt options with lucanis in the romance so far (I've personally found the dynamic much more natural and mutual when you do that, more like forming a solid friendship slowly and inevitably becoming something else and less like you keep pushing on him and getting little back b/c he seemingly just gets overwhelmed and goes into freeze instead), and I think rye is a pretty hard person to read at the best of times even though he's been Down Real Bad from pretty early on and their chemistry as people is naturally really good. so the way the almost-kiss plays out in this playthrough feels a lot like it has the added layer of lucanis realizing that no but for sure rook is flirting and not just being kind or a good friend* it IS actually happening it's not just wishful/fearful thinking!!! and then uh. maybe going a bit too hard a bit too fast in all the excitement at that revelation haha

*in lucanis' defense he has seemingly literally never had a friend who wasn't his cousin-brother before, under those circumstances I suppose some confusion is extremely natural if not outright expected lmao

speaking of veilguard kind of going nowhere. i am so mad over there being no in depth epilogue. at least tell me what happens to the factions that are being led/guided by people rook influenced !!!!!! all these companions have obvious obligations outside of the veilguard, and they're all dedicated to the lives they lived before they joined this team, so of course they would go back. what effect did bellara deciding to keep the archive have on the elves? neve decides to protect dock town by any means necessary, so what does that mean for a blighted minrathous? everything to do with harding and the titans ????!!!! and solas just accepts being trapped because he's been 'outplayed' DO NOT MAKE ME LAUGH!!!! somebody has got to tell me what happens after the world gets 'saved' because the south in chaos, minrathous almost destroyed and the last of the elven gods being dead is like. crazy. and the companions just commenting things i already know is really not cutting it for me
