Obviously I do ship trobed, but also one thing that gets me is that even if you don't ship them, it's so obvious that they care for and love each other so much. Abed would literally sacrifice his life for Troy and Troy is the one person who never judges Abed about anything he does, and they love spending time together and they understand each other in a way that no one else really ever does. warnings/tags: mentions of neurotypical, abed not understanding, i try to write abed as accurately and appropriate as possible i hope my depiction of him is okay!

abed wasn’t one for social cues. you knew this from the start of being in the chaotic study group. whenever someone was sarcastic, he thought they were serious. and if someone was unhappy with him it sometimes took abed a while to notice.

however, you trying to let abed know you like him through simple signs was hellish. even a neurotypical person may not even get the signs, therefore poor abed nadir never stood the chance.

troy, as the role of abed’s best friend – practically platonic boyfriend – did notice the signs. watching as you took more than an interest in his movie rants than even troy could sometimes bear, bringing him hot chocolate in the morning, or asking him fitting questions and smiling lovingly as you watched him go into overdrive and talk it out.

annie and troy would fangirl over it, fawning over their best friend having a love interest. oh how badly they wanted abed to have someone, especially someone like you, who treated him just as well as they did.

troy had been desperate to tell abed, knowing you struggled on that end. but after months, annie had begged troy not to ruin the story and that it’ll happen when it’s meant to.

however, his promise to keep it to himself didn’t last long. since, one day, after you left their shared apartment – all lovey dovey eyed after hours of watching abed’s favourite movie per your request – troy immediately let it spill.

annie was smiling, watching abed as the door clicked shut and troy reluctantly set his third chocolate cake slice down to the side, “y/n likes you!”

immediately, annie’s smile drops, landing a swift smack against troy’s arm from sitting beside him, “troy! what did i tell you?” they bicker slightly, at first not noticing their best friend’s confused expression.

“what do you mean?”

annie sighs, looking over to abed who is trying to process the news in his own way – which seems to be slightly confusing but overwhelming him all at the same time.

“… what troy’s trying to tell you is that y/n likes you, like… in a romantic way abed.”

abed’s eyes are darting, eyebrows frowned as he continues to intake the words his friend’s tell him. “in a ‘let’s get together’ way?” asks abed, and they both nod in reply, expectantly watching his expressional response.

abed didn’t depict this in their television show, although he did portray you as the ‘pretty one’ or as the ‘caring and kind’ one of the group which he is now realising is because he thought those things himself.

so, without responding, abed stands, shocking his friend’s as he runs to the door and quickly down the hall. “abed! abed, where are you going?” troy yells desperately, worried tones while annie mutters, “look what you did.”

he doesn’t stop, reading the front door wedged open with an old brick and towards your frame, now opening your car door to drive home. “y/n!” you hear and pause, turning to see abed trudging over.

“abed- whats going on-?” your interrupted as abed kisses you, short but slightly breath-taking as your mind goes blank, in disbelief. once he pulls away, abed says nothing, making you speak first, “is that one of your movie character moments or…” you trail off, unsure what else it would be.

“you like me.”

you groan embarrassed, “i’m gonna kill troy i swear.”

“i like you.”

you pause, looking up at his daring eyes, scanning your confused expression, “y-you do?” you ask him.

“yeah… i think so.”

usually, that answer would worry you, but it was different with abed, it was a major moment between you both in that moment. abed nadir hardly admitted feelings, especially in a romantic sense, unless he was depicting a character.

“do you think annie and troy will be watching us from the window?” you ask with a giggle and abed smiles, immediately responding, “absolutely.”

you lean up, pressing a long and heartfelt kiss to abed’s cheek and you watch his reaction, taken aback but a small smile still covers his face. his fingers touch the spot, his cheeks heating up like a furnace while you spin round to your open door to your car.

“i’ll see you tomorrow, abed, okay?”

“okay.” abed replies, waving you goodbye as you drive off, knowing he will go back into chaos of annie and troy squealing and celebrating their friend’s newfound romance.

(A/N: I added Annie because I love writing for Annie platonically (almost as much as I like writing for her romantically) and the request wasn’t all that specific so I felt alright about it. I based a lot of this on a lot of feelings I’ve had regarding my sexuality, and I’m hoping some other aspec people can relate to the feelings in this fic. Anyway, thanks for sending in a request that helps me give more ace rep in the fanfic community. I hope you’re doing well, anon! Feel free to hop into my DMs if you need to talk about stuff like sexuality, since I know what it’s like to be hella confused about it.)

You stared at Annie with the intensity of a thousand suns and the disbelief of someone witnessing an extreme car crash.

“Come again?” you said, knowing full well what Annie had just said.

Annie’s eyes widened and she opened her mouth to speak, but she hesitated. She stared right back at you with the expression of a rabbit about to be crushed by the wheel of a Jeep, lips pursed as she formulated some semblance of a response in her head.

“Crap...” she uttered through gritted teeth, before letting out a gentle sigh. “Look, Y/N, I wasn’t supposed to tell you that.”

“Then why did you?” you hissed, panic prominent in your tone.

“I-I don’t know. It just slipped!” Annie replied defensively.

“It just slipped?” you retorted with a snort. You huffed and folded your arms as you sunk into your uncomfortable cafeteria seat.

You averted your gaze and fixed it on your lap, but you could tell Annie was still looking at you from across the table. However, you hadn’t quite noticed that Annie wasn’t just looking at you; she was examining you. The cafeteria chatter was muffled in your ears as you awaited anything from Annie, be it an apology or further explanation. Perhaps she didn’t owe you the former as much as the latter, but either would’ve been nice.

“Why are you so irritated?” she questioned, more curious than anything else. “It’s not like I spilled any of your secrets.”

“Because, in a few hours, I’m going to have to sit at the same table as him and pretend like I don’t know he has...feelings for me.” you answered, fiddling with the fabric of your sleeve. 

“Wait...but...I thought you liked Abed?” Annie asked.

“Of course I do!” you blurted, immediately wincing in regret after doing so. 

“Then what’s the problem?” she said. “You can just tell him how you feel and-”

“It’s more complicated than that, Annie.” you sighed, scratching your neck. “There’s a reason I don’t like getting involved with people in that way. I-I’d rather not get into it. But, the bottom line is that I’m going to have to pretend like I don’t know about it, then I won’t have to deal with-with...this.”

Annie furrowed her brows. She knew better than to probe you, but her curiosity  tempted her to question you further. If she couldn’t bombard you with the myriad of questions that had popped into her mind, she had no idea what to say. Her eyes awkwardly darted to the floor.

You glanced up at her, then back down at your lap. 

“Promise me you won’t tell him I know?” you requested, though, tonally, it was more of a demand.

She looked up at you raised her hands almost defensively. “Yeah. I promise.”

It wasn’t lost on you that telling Annie to keep a secret like this wasn’t all that good of an idea considering the fact your request/demand was a result of the secret she had (albeit inadvertently) relayed to you, but what else could you do? Confront the feelings you’d suppressed for so long? Pffft. Nope.

When it was time for your study group to meet up, Annie was coping with with the pressure she was under like a house of cards. She scratched her neck like some kind of junkie and nodded insistently when Jeff, Britta and Shirley each attempted to ask her if everything was alright. She glanced over at you afterwards, something that only Abed seemed to notice.

“She keeps glancing over at Y/N.” Abed inputted bluntly. “They’re in cahoots.”

“Y/N, what’s going on?” Jeff sighed, causing the entire group to direct their attention to you.

“None of your business.” you replied as calmly as possible. 

“Well, I think it’s kind of our business when Annie looks like the star of a very special episode.” Jeff retorted in a fairly dry manner, folding his arms. “And, since Annie’s a former Adderall addict, you know why that’s at least some cause for concern.” 

“Well, to my knowledge, Annie’s not on drugs, so we can just drop this and actually get some studying done.” you insisted, annoyance prominent in your tone.

There was a moment of silence, causing you to avert your gaze to your lap.

“Are you okay, Y/N?” Britta questioned, brows furrowed.

“Mhm.” you hummed irritably, avoiding making eye contact with the blonde. You swallowed your saliva and bit your lip, before making the quick decision of just walking off. You had been so caught up in your own swarming thoughts that you left your un-pocketed belongings behind. Still, they all knew better than to chase after you. You clearly didn’t want to talk, at least in that moment.

Mentally, you were somewhere between fine and a panic attack. As though you were having a panic attack, your thoughts were racing through your head like cars on a busy highway. Admittedly, you felt somewhat overwhelmed as a result, but you didn’t feel like you were on the verge of passing out. 

Your legs had to carry you as if on autopilot, leading you to the steps outside the building. Instinctively, you took a seat. 

The campus was fairly calm in this period of the late afternoon/early evening. It was this tranquillity that allowed you to truly process everything in your head. You’d been so caught up in focusing on your afternoon classes that you hadn’t had the time to rationalise how you were feeling and why you were feeling the way you were feeling. You were sure Annie was still wondering why you were so adamant on ignoring Abed’s feelings for you despite the fact that you reciprocated them. Plus, you’d probably freaked out your other friends with your sudden exit.

You knew full well why you refused to acknowledge the possibility of a relationship with Abed, and you also knew full well that the idea of ever having to tell him why would be just as painful for you as it would be for him. If he knew what was good for him, he would just move on and find someone who could give him what most people seemed to need and/or want.

Your vacant stare was directed at the stone steps beneath your outstretched legs. Meanwhile, your mind felt as though it were on some other plain of existence. The passers-by glanced over at you (not that you really noticed), assuming you’d probably traded pills with Star-Burns in the bathroom. 

Reality may as well have faded away.

However, a particular pair of footsteps, for a reason unbeknown to you, caught your attention.

You turned your head to find the person you’d least wanted it to be, but perhaps it was the person you’d needed to see the most.

“Hey, Abed.” you sighed, before turning back around and grimacing.

“Hey.” he responded, still standing a couple of feet behind you. “Annie said I should be the one to come talk to you, but I told her not to explain herself for dramatic purposes.”

“So, now, I have to explain it to you?” you said with a defeated tone.

“Only if you want to.” Abed replied. 

“Well...I guess I kinda have to.” you huffed.

“Why? Technically, you don’t have to do anything. You just feel obligated to do stuff because of social pressure.” Abed insisted.

“Yeah, but...if I don’t get this out, I feel like I’m going to implode.” you groaned, your frustration with the whole situation not at all helped by Abed’s technically-right observation.

“Then, let it out.” Abed suggested with a shrug.

You bit your lip. Your expression was one of someone deliberating. Abed knew it would take a while for you to respond.

“Should I sit down?” Abed asked. 

Your brows furrowed at his question, but your expression softened when you remembered that it was Abed you were having this conversation with. 

“Uh...yeah. Probably.” you said, instinctively scratching your neck.

Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Abed’s slightly scuffed, grey sneakers as he took a seat beside you. He didn’t try to make eye contact, but his eyes rested on your face, observing your expression. You felt blood rush to your cheeks.

“Abed, Annie told me about how you have feelings for me.” you confessed, face scrunching up a little awkwardly. “And, it’s not that I don’t like you- I actually kinda really like you too. It’s just that I don’t know if we’re actually that compatible, you know?”

“I don’t know if I know.” Abed answered a little cluelessly.

You swallowed your saliva.

“I think we have different wants and needs.” you continued. “Like...sex.”

“Oh.” Abed said. It was subtle in his monotonous voice, but you could hear a hint of disappointment. “It’s because I’m asexual...”

You fell silent for a moment. Did...did Abed just tell you he’s asexual, you thought. No...surely not... Your mind vanished in that moment, which is why your response was so utterly dumb.

“No. It’s because I’m asexual.” you insisted.

Then, it finally clicked for both of you. 

Your mouth fell open, while Abed knitted his brows. You both turned your heads to look at one another.

“You’re asexual?” you and Abed questioned in unison.

You turned away from each other, a comfortable, thoughtful silence between you. The stress of mere minutes ago had been drained from your body, and yet your heart was still racing. You’d spent so long being afraid of letting yourself have feelings for Abed, not allowing yourself to think he’d want to be with you because of who you were. It had happened with other people.

“So,” Abed began. “There’s not a compatibility issue.”

“No," you agreed. “There isn’t.”

“Was that the only thing holding you back?” Abed asked.

“Yeah,” you answered. “Which means there’s nothing stopping either of us from giving this a shot.”

There was a pause for a moment, and for a second you began to doubt whether Abed actually wanted to give this a shot, but he soon stopped that train of thought.

“Do you want to come over and watch Inspector Spacetime with me?” Abed suggested. “I don’t think the others think we’re coming back. Annie said she’d take care of your stuff if you didn’t.”

“Sure.” you answered, sending him a smile.

You could imagine how overjoyed (and incredibly smug) Annie was going to be when she interrogated you about this tomorrow.

abed is greyromantic and in a qpr with troy do not even try to change my mind. i would say he’s 100% aromantic but he did have a girlfriend or two so it seems less likely. but he’s definitely on the aro spectrum and i like to think he’s ace, too. also just another example of me projecting :’)

katniss everdeen (the hunger games)

do not come at me with ‘but she kissed people and liked it!’ ‘she married peeta and had a kid with him!’ i do not care. she loved peeta but it was not romantic, it was that special type of love that i like to think only arospec people can feel :) they were in a qpr and got platonically (kinda) married and had a child because they’re a family! yeah i’m projecting. also arospec people can enjoy kissing it’s not a hard concept to comprehend. katniss everdeen is arospec (and probably ace too but i kinda like to headcanon her as aro allo) and started a family with her soulmate who she loves deeply. idk about you but that makes perfect sense to me.

An unpopular opinion: s6 is a really good season and conclusion to the show. It’s my favorite of the later seasons (4 and 5 I do consider to be the only weak seasons although I don’t hate either/enjoy certain things about them. 5 has great stand alone episodes but it’s the one I like least in terms of overall arc whereas 4 is just kind of meh to me, with an occasional especially good or egregiously bad moment)

Favourite Friendship:The Study Group obviously. I especially have a soft spot for Troy and Annie’s friendship, and Abed and Annie would be my favorite dynamic of the show while I oscillate between preferring them as a platonic or romantic pairing. Jeff and Abed’s dynamic is incredible they are perfectly crafted foils. And this is more unpopular but I love Britta and Abed! there are issues in their friendship for sure but I find it interesting and compelling, and their sweet moments are very cute. Also wish we got more of Annie and Shirley’s dynamic, they are also great foils especially in episodes like the Science of Illusion where they get to tag team but also kind of compete.

Fave work: the entire Topics in Romance and Recovery Series; I really need to comment on stuff, but it’s hard to articulate. This series was so validating and healing for me, especially since some of the incidents Abed went through gave me so much anxiety, but also because “Your feelings are valid,” and “Meltdowns aren’t your fault,” started sinking into my head, too. They said they wrote from experience, and I could see it, and I’m so proud of them. We all deserve healing and love.

One of my fave works so far: don’t ever set me aside with the things that you don’t need (a conventions of space and time rewrite); THIS IS HOW EASY IT WOULD BE to make the show more inclusive and kind while staying genuine and funny!! It would be so easy!! But also take effort from people who genuinely cared, like this author. Thank you so much.

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

I don’t think I’m very good at writing dialogue, but here’s a snippet from a scene I like:

“That’s Diego Martinez,” Annie says excitedly, in the voice she usually reserves for saying things like ‘Zac Efron’ or ‘Mark Ruffalo’. “He’s in my philosophy class. He just came over here and said,” -- her voice drops to a lower register -- “‘Excuse me, are you Abed Nadir? I loved your documentary on the Dean’s descent into madness.’ Like Abed was an actual celebrity! You should’ve seen it, Troy, it was so adorable!”

“Trust me, that was just a pretext,” Britta says, nodding her head sagely. “I’ve seen that look on men’s faces before. They say they like your work, but what they really mean is they’d like to see you out of that… well, hoodie.”

“Nice try getting us to believe you’ve ever done any work anyone could pretend to like,” Jeff remarks. Britta sticks out her tongue at him.

“I’m sure he’s just a nice boy who admires Abed’s movies, with no… inappropriate intentions,” Shirley says delicately.

“Hmm, I wouldn’t be so sure,” Pierce chimes in. “Britta’s right, that look only means one thing. It’s the same look Julie Newmar gave me right before she had her way with me in the backseat of --”

I have trouble juggling more than two characters so my trobed fics don’t feature the rest of the study group much and this is the only scene I’ve written that has all of them in it. I think they all sound like themselves, so I’m proud of it even though most of them only get one or two lines. (Annie voice:  I don't care what you think. For me, that was huge.)

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

Probably making Troy leave Abed in five different timelines in Multilinear Psychology. Many, many years ago when I was an angsty teenager in the Harry Potter fandom I really enjoyed making characters suffer and killing everybody off, but these days I just want everyone to be happy so any angst in my fics is mostly just pining.

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

I have an aroace Annie fic I started back in September or October that I don’t think I’ll ever finish. Basically Annie figures out she’s aroace, and when Troy and Abed start dating she’s so happy for them but she also gets sad because it feels like all of her friends will have romantic relationships and families and she’ll end up all alone, but then Troy and Abed reassure her and the three of them end up living together in a kind of half-romantic, half-platonic triad where Troy and Abed are in a romantic relationship but they’re both also Annie’s platonic life partners.  

V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

I wouldn’t want to do that. The trobed fandom has such great fics and I could never do any of them justice and if I had to write a sequel or prequel to one of them I’d find that so stressful 😅

Got any Trobed headcanons? (I'm Autistic and like to project onto Abed)

Relationship(s): Troy Barnes x Abed Nadir (romantic)

Warnings: None! (Let me know if I need to add any)

(A/N: In case you didn’t know, this isn’t strictly a reader-insert fanfiction blog. I haven’t actively written/asked for requests for ships, but I’m definitely not opposed to writing headcanons for ships I like/ship. In this case, I’m a Trobed shipper, both in its platonic form and romantic form. I’m not opposed to a bit of platonic and/or romantic Trobedison either.)

I feel like the Study Group would figure out Troy and Abed are dating before Troy and Abed actually tell them.

Like they notice them being more overtly together than usual.

I can imagine Annie, Shirley or Britta sheepishly asking them about it and Troy being like:

“Oh, crap, I knew there was something we forgot to do.”

Abed would have just been waiting for everyone to figure it out.

They wouldn’t have a honeymoon phase of their relationship where they’re all lovey-dovey.

Their relationship would always be a lot like their friendship, with them spending a ton of time together.

I can picture them cosplaying together at geeky conventions.

Basically, their relationship, despite their childish behaviour, would be like a married couple that’s been together for ages.

Troy becomes a pro at helping Abed when he gets overwhelmed.

The man could write a step-by-step guide on how to console Abed.

They become so attentive to one another’s body language.

Troy tends to be the only one who is sincerely interested when Abed starts talking about a TV show or movie.

He listens so intently, like a kid being read a bedtime story.

They don’t need to show affection to let one another know they love each other.

The love between them is clear to anyone who spends a minute with them.

Troy often verbalises his admiration for Abed in the form of awestruck whispering.

Abed tends to show his love more by spending time with Troy.

Troy and Abed spend most of their dates cuddling in front of the TV and eating takeout.

Annie would probably feel like a third-wheel in the apartment most of the time, but all three of them know that she’s the one that gets everything done (paying bills, grocery shopping, tidying etc.).

Most of the time, strangers who see Troy and Abed together have to wonder whether they’re really good friends or if they’re dating, since their relationship can come off more as a friendship, which neither of them mind.

After all, they’re happy, so who cares if anyone thinks their relationship’s a little unconventional?

A (Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.): I’ve always loved Stucky, they’re my OTP, but I also ship both Vaxleth, Vax’ilmore and Chlodine (I think that’s the ship name). I used to ship Widofjord but after I realized that Caleb’s not in the right mindset for romance I stopped and shifted to more of a BROTP. If/when the Mighty Nein help Caleb overcome his demons, though, you better believe I’ll be the captain of the Widofjord ship.

B (A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.): Vaxlan (platonic) was never really on my radar until I saw some adorable fanart of their friendship. I had always thought of Scanlan as just the guy who flirts up until then (I was only around episode 40 at the time) until Vax turned to him for advice and he actually gave pretty good advice, and now he’s my second favourite out of all of VM. Plus Liam and Sam’s marriage friendship is too pure for this world and it’s hard to not let that carry over into their characters.

M (Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.): Abed Nadir from Community would be cool to have as a friend. His extensive knowledge of pop culture is like mine and we both use it as our coping mechanism. Plus Abed is very “meta” and I have derealization/depersonalization so, uh, we can relate to each other? It would be cool to have someone else who is neurodivergent and obsessed with pop culture to hang out with, especially since I learned how to interact with people “better” through it.

T (Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?): Caleb Widogast has OCD tendencies, if not full on OCD. It’s obvious he has anxiety, but the minute I saw that his counting became a recurring thing I immediately pinned it as OCD. A lot of Caleb’s character and mannerisms are scary close to my own, so I will absolutely defend a depiction of OCD that’s not dismissed as “perfectionism” or is always the butt of a joke.

U (Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.): (I’ve already talked about Abed and Caleb so I’ll try to do different ones) Kamala Khan, Pidge Holt and Vax’ildan. Reading Ms. Marvel was what got me into comics, and G. Willow Wilson writes her beautifully. I loved her fangirl side (which I can obviously relate to) but I also loved her background. I’m not Pakistani, but I am the child of a refugee and that issue where it details her family leaving their home hit me hard. Pidge is just a really cool character and her not conforming to her gender expectations even after they discovered she was a girl really helped me discover myself (I’m actually making her sweater for my Halloween costume). And Vax’ildan... where do I even begin? That bisexual disaster of a rogue/paladin has allowed me to be more comfortable with my emotions. I’ve always been seen as a tomboy, to the point where if I showed any emotions I’d be judged (I wore leggings to school once and that was all my “friends” were talking about all day). Seeing this guy show his emotions so blatantly really helped me allow myself to feel things, plus whenever I’m in a bad situation I think about all the shit that Vax had to go through, both mentally and physically, and it always keeps me going.
