Fun fact: The guy who translated TDV to hungarian is the same guy who wrote the lyrics to my favourite musical. And also adapted one of my favourite hungarian classic book ever into a musical
Extremely common Miklós Tibor W
#btw the two musicals are Vörös Malom (avagy az ördög tragédiája) - Scarlett mill (the tragedy of devil)#and Szegény gazdagok/Fatia Negra - The poor plutocrats/Fatia Negra i've seen both versions used#more on Vörös Malom later#i have a lot to say#not an expert but he has a very distinct style and i love it#tanz der vampire#count von krolock#herbert von krolock#tdv#vámpírok bálja#tanz der vampire alfred#musicals

There's also Epic of Gilgamesh by Danny P Jackson, but for me personally not really recommended to OP since it skips some parts that are crucial in my opinion (like Enkidu turned to bless Shamhat after cruelly cursing her, completely speedrun battle with Humbaba with just like 6 short sentence) and for writer's bias toward non-sexual brotherly relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu (which indeed still valid interpretation but not one I agree with). For example his rendering on one of gayest Gilgamesh and Enkidu segment in tablet 12 :
(I mean, whether old translation that said Enkidu described some female lover's vulva to Gilgamesh or translation that said Enkidu described his own penis and 'sweet spot' to Gilgamesh, for me the bits about Underworld have no sex and Gilgamesh despaired about it is kinda important for Gilgamesh's characterization as my horny himbo imho. But again that's up to interpretation. Still "skin and bones" is eh... The book also skipped any mention of kiss, which is lame).
But all flaws aside, you can enjoy this book for your Gilga-archiving or seeing different kind of perspective (while enjoying the writer's effort on no-homoing Gilgamesh's Wet Dream part and Lament for Enkidu part). This book also composed with pretty neat rhyme so it's more pleasant to read, plus some rad illustrations like this one :
And this is the quote I love most from this book
“Hold my hand in yours, and we will not fear what hands like ours can do.”
P:S = @haustafall HOLY MARDUK I DESPERATELY NEED THE DEREK HINES GILGAMESH PLAY PRETTY PLEASE TELL ME WHERE CAN I HAVE IT (preferable the e-book version)
can anyone on this gay ass website give me an opinion on which translation of the epic of gilgamesh i should read? ive been wanting to read it for ages but theres a number of common translations and i know translations can make or break a story; i dont want to start with the wrong one
#gilgamesh#enkidu#epic of gilgamesh#of all version of Gilgamesh books in this world#guess which one that exist in my utterly conservative school#Danny Jackson version is also kind out of date (published in 1997)#so I guess I'll give it the benefit of a doubt#personally speaking I enjoy Andrew George version the most#but because I love meta and scholar words-vomit#it's almost 1000 page with so many interesting tidbits#like apparently Gilgamesh existed in Book of Enoch??#so now I am on Gilgamesh/Abrahamic text parallel hellhole#I haven't finished that almost-1000-pages book#and at this point I am not sure I can finish it without getting derailed by every tidbits#I also agree that Benjamin Foster and Herbert Mason version are the most enjoyable for first timer#I haven't read Sophus Helle and Maureen Kovacs version and now I am intrigued#DEREK HINES VERSION SOUNDS LIKE A JOY I CARNALLY WANT IT#sorry I reblog your post with an essay

It’s early summer,
the hopeless romantic in me found her way to the surface when the heat melted couple of my overprotective layers.
so here i am, allowing her a moment of spotlight and myself some vulnerability.
it’s past midnight, I’m sitting in floor of my kitchen eating fruits with a knife
wondering, if it’s really safe to romanticize life?
I indulge myself anyway, and think about how fruits can be considered a love language if you’re starved enough to taste love that’s throughly stained with muted apologies.
I trust, that when the sun rises tomorrow all my attempts to romanticize life will sublimate and create a thick fog of melancholy that I’ll have no other option but to get lost into.
even so, tonight I’m tired enough to let it be and so i write this, my own report of pathology
officially it’s untitled, but I’m thinking: the pathology of love.
i start by resecting pieces of all the habits that i define my existence based on along with some of the heartache that i held onto for too long
deep down, i know some of it belongs to my mother
At least its mature flavor says so, that, balanced with the sweet essence of an overly ripe fruit that never belonged
Young and brash and an acquired taste.
it’s a poorly fixed microscopic tissue, preserved in a high percentage of feminine rage
Low expectations stained with love and paranoia alike and the question that asks itself:
is it benign or malignant?
is it infiltrating my soul, taking away from my potential to grow ?
It stays unanswered, an unforced error
because i always carry those little versions of me that vary in the percentage of their belief in my own bone marrow
a core biopsy will always show that i still believe.

I hope you don't mind, but now that I've finally found someone who's listening to Magnus Protocol but hasn't listened to Magnus Archives I will be studying you like a bug under a magnifying glass. I've been dying to know how the show hits from a non archives perspective. So in that vein, if you don't mind me questioning you, what are your overall thoughts on the show so far? Also what's it like seeing the fandom response from people who have listened to archives? Have you been successful in avoiding spoilers?
Honestly I’ve been loving Protocol.
I’m not 100% sure what to translate since I don’t know what Archives context I’m missing, but I can try to tell you what I really like about Protocol.
I really do love the format of Protocol. It’s mostly an office drama story, which on its own is appealing, but the statements from FR3-D1 put in each episode gives the story this underlying horror aspect to it. So when I listen to an episode, often times if the statement portion feels lacking, the office drama really brings up the episode and the vice versa.
Then things start to get a lot more creepier when the two intersect (The Magnus Institute, Mr. Bonzo, Lady Mowbray, the Drowning Victim, the Archivist, etc.) and by this point in the story, we’re so close to having a full merge.
Since this is my first real dive into horror podcasts, I do want to engage with the fan community, but it’s hard to balance being spoiler-free at the same time. I do know some general spoilers that I haven’t updated in a while, but is mostly still accurate. I don’t know what an Archivist is, but I am aware that AU versions of Archives characters have made their debut here.
I am aware that Protocol is going a lot faster than Archives. From what I understand of Archives, it has a lot more slow build up rather than Protocol which I has a pretty good pace. Might be because Protocol has less than half the episodes as Archives.
It’s really interesting how the fandom keeps losing their minds over stuff that I’m just like “yeah cool let’s see where that goes”. Like E26 where the Archivist was named, I felt like I took on the perspective of Alice/Gwen/Sam where I’m like “okay… and this means what?” while the rest of the fandom is taking the Celia perspective of “OH NO”.
Or even this recent episode where this Minister Trevor Herbert dude was. Like I have no idea what this dude is and why everyone is absolutely screaming, crying, throwing up that he’s here, and that is fascinating.
It’s been pretty interesting when I bring up something that felt weird or off that just went nowhere, and my friends revealing some info. I’m like “WHAT” and they’re just like “oh thats not common knowledge?” And I’m just there like “huh?!?” Which turns out, the Hilltop Centre was actually important.
I mostly wish the fandom would tag archives spoilers with #tma /#the Magnus archives / #tma vague just so that spoilers could be tagged a little bit better, but to be fair I am one of the rare people that doesn’t intersect the Venn diagram between archives and protocol.
But overall, I really am loving Protocol. I don’t know when I’ll listen to Archives (probably after Protocol’s three seasons are over) but I will listen to it eventually. Feel free to send more asks my way.

Midnight Pals: Desert Planet
Stephen King: so i'm gonna go over to space coven tonight to tell a story Clive Barker: what, the sci fi nerds? good luck with that King: oh they're not so bad once you get to know them, clive Barker: i do not intend to know nerds
King: look, clive, you know mary goes over to the sci fi campfire sometimes Barker: i do not believe it King: it's true! she invented sci fi, you know Barker: mary shelley? OUR mary shelley? the queen witch? Barker: she invented being a nerd?
Barker: oh steve Barker: you can't expect me to swallow that whopper King: it's true! edgar, tell him Poe: steve's right, clive. she really did Barker: Barker: well now i just don't know what to believe
King: i know those sci fi guys are a little odd but King: if you ever want to read a prose version of a mildly confusing math problem King: i mean bam they're your guys! Barker: Barker: yeah well Barker: have fun with that
King: you know, clive a lot of science fiction actually deals with important issues in today's society? King: they really make you think [at space coven] Robert Heinlein: so once we space-stead Pinochet's Gulch on an asteroid, we'll be free from the tyranny of age of consent laws
[at space coven] King: so in this story they invent a way to travel through space King: but you have to be unconscious for it to work Frank Herbert: i have a better idea for space travel Herbert: what if you had to get really blasted
Herbert: let me explain my vision steve Herbert: In a distant time Herbert: And far away place Herbert: The planet Arrakis floats deep in space Herbert: Sky of three suns Herbert: Land of precious spice Herbert: The melange rush brought great houses at any price
Herbert: Then one day, a Muad'Dib appeared Herbert: With powers of hawk, wolf, puma and bear Herbert: Protector of peace, scion of the Bene Gesserit ladies Herbert: Champion of justice, Marshall Paul Atreides! King: King: hey how many of those mushrooms did you eat
Herbert: so the important thing about Dune, okay Herbert: is there's all this political intrigue Heinlein: and worms? Herbert: yeah yeah there's gonna be worms Herbert: let's talk about these factions though Heinlein: how big are the worms
Herbert: you're gonna love this story Herbert: though its not as great as the melodic beauty & divine truth of the 114 surahs of the Qur'an Heinlein: Herbert: inshallah Heinlein: why do you always have to put so much islam in it Herbert: i just Herbert: i just think its neat
Mary Shelley: [busting into clearing] sup fuckers Shelley: who's ready for their weekly beating? Heinlein: no! no! not mary shelley! Heinlein: have mercy!!! Heinlein: here, take all our lunch money! Heinlein: just don't punish us anymore!
King: mary! Is this what you've been doing when you come to this campfire? Shelley: [wailing on Heinlein] what? oh yeah, p much.

i love to think that Herbert sharing his creations is the deepest form of intimacy for him and is the sincerest way for him to make connections with people, such as Dr. Gruber and Dan. to me its also a partial reason he respects the sanctity of scientific work and would despise Hill for being a plagiarizer, but also for invading into Herbert's personal work uninvited. for me it also makes Dan turning in Herbert to the police even more betraying ughgh.. i'm not sure if i made sense, but i'd love to hear your thoughts
Oh, you made sense, Anon, you just also broke my heart.
This is kind of what I've been getting at with some of my essays. A lot of Herbert's actions are motivated by a need for acknowledgement; more specifically, he needs certain people to acknowledge him. This sounds egomaniacal at first blush. But it's actually sad. Pathetic, even. This powerful and brilliant man who has enough willpower to stop Hill's mesmerism before it starts is, in addition, so weak that he crumples emotionally when Dan doesn't laugh at his jokes?
You make a good point that Hill going uninvited/breaking in to West's lab is one of the things that would infuriate Herbert, just because it's His Space and he does not want Hill in it. This is reinforced in BRIDE when Chapham invades his and Dan's home. There's the obvious "officer doing an illegal investigation and illegally invading a suspect's home to gather inadmissible evidence". But then, you know, he also crushes the eye puppy--destroying Herbert's first creation, the validation of his hypothesis about The Human Will, confirmation that the new version of reagent works as intended... all gone before Dan can even come to appreciate how clever it (and by extension Herbert) is.
And, yeah: this is what makes that one throwaway line about Dan turning in evidence against Herbert so savage. Herbert trusted him more than anybody else on Earth. Dan participated in their crimes as an adult who knew what he was doing. And Dan rewarded that trust by turning on him? Ooof. The pain.
