Writing Post Masterlist
All my posts about writing - plus some I absolutely loved by other writers.
Masterlists by Other People (all good)
"Writing Tips Masterpost" by @deception-united - Deception-United has an incredibly wealth of resources available, far more comprehensive and detailed than mine. Go check it out!
"WQA Post Master Lists" by @writingquestionsanswered - Another fantastic and wonderfully comprehensive resource that covers damn near everything you need to know about writing. Genuinely one of the best free resources on writing that you could find on the internet.
General Advice for a Happy Writing Life
"The Myth of the Martyr Artist" - An incredibly important post, perhaps my most important one ever, that discusses why mental illness is a burden, not a benefit. I have no idea why this even needs to be said, but it does, apparently.
"Building Self-Esteem as a Writer" - Why you gotta be nice to yourself. You gotta.
"Identifying bad writing advice" - Warning signs that the post you are reading kinda sucks and you should click off.
"Advice to Beginner Writers: The Good, the Bad, and the Unpleasant" - How long it takes to become a good writer, what to focus on when learning, and why fanfic is such a useful tool.
"Mindset Shifts: Fanfiction -> Original Fiction" - What fanfic writers should know about deciding to take on original characters and stories.
"Defeating Protracted Writer's Block" - What to do when you find it impossible to write for days, weeks, or months at a time.
"Five Common Anxieties of Newbie Writers, Demystified" - Explorations of five mindsets that can set younger writers back as they learn their craft, including overcompetitiveness, overdescribing, and fearing they're "too old."
"Good Motivations for Continuing to Write" - Why it is crucial to have a passion for writing beyond fame and fortune.
"Extremely controversial writing opinions that will make you mad (but I'm going to say them anyway)" - Things you really don't want to hear, but need to be said. A bit of tough love, including the insignificance of ideas, the cold hard truth about how non-writers react to your writing, and the essentiality of having a well-rounded life.
"Why Mindfulness Is a Key Practice for Writers" - On the need to slow down and let our brain rest - plus some options that are categorically not sitting there in dead silence (boring).
"Writing When Happy" - Wherein I hijack someone's question to discuss the Myth of the Martyr Artist, why we might self-limit because of it, and how to do the impossible: write when we're happy.
"The Neurodivergent Writerâs Guide to Fun and Productivity" by @bookishdiplodocus - Excellent advice on how enjoying the process and reminding yourself that writing is supposed to be fun can help you stay motivated and productive, even when your brain is not cooperating.
"The Glorification of Self-Deprecation in Art/Writing Spaces" by @nicolkoutoulakiauthor - I've discussed before how crucial it is to have a healthy self-esteem when writing, but Nicol does it even better here. Nicol also includes some excellent reframing tactics so you can stay motivated.
Generalish Writing Advice (multifactorial)
"Signs That You Will Probably Finish Your Writing Project" - An analysis of the mindset that leads to results, and encouragement on how to develop them.
"'How Do I Start Writing?'" (Or; A Psychoanalysis of Newbie Writer Fears) - Inspired by the dozens of Reddit posts that ask this exact same thing, often with useless responses. So why do people ask this? I offer my theory.
"I Can Think of Ideas But Can't Write Them!" - A consideration of the many reasons you might find it difficult to get started on your precious idea-baby.
"How to elevate your writing style with 6 simple hacks" - Information about how to develop a prettier prose style, catch errors, develop good dialogue, and focus on brevity.
"How to improve your writing style : a 5-steps guide" by @writer-logbook - Especially great information on why reading widely is so helpful for your craft!
"Some Writing Advice" by @whispers-whump - Especially great discussion of why you shouldn't write what you mean.
"Practical Writing Advice Part 2" by @so-many-ocs - Does what it says on the tin. Simple, easy-to-follow advice that can break you out of writer's block.
"25 Prose Tips for Writers" by @thewriteadviceforwriters - I absolutely love the emphasis on sound and harmony here. As someone whose entire book series revolves around the magic of poetry, of course I think this is incredibly important advice!
"Pacing and Show Don't Tell" by @mylordshesacactus - Two for one deal! First, learn more about why pacing is important; then, look at some examples of the classic advice "show, don't tell." The post does a great job on breaking down what show don't tell actually means and what is not a violation of this guideline so that newer writers aren't confused.
Writing tools
"How to Build a Sustainable Writing Habit Through SCIENCE (Fuck Off, NaNoWriMo)" - Why NaNoWriMo doesn't actually motivate young writers and how to do better through a spreadsheet (yes, really, a spreadsheet). It also explains the importance of intrinsic motivation!
"'I've Outlined Too Much and Now I Can't Write!' (Or: the Double Outline Method for Overanxious Plotters)" - Some of us tend to go absolutely ham on our outlines, to the point where they're practically their own books. But then we also tend to not actually do the writing attached to said outline. Does this mean outlining is useless? Of course not. My method lets you have your outline and eat it too. (.... Wait.)
"'How Do I Make Myself Start Writing?' (Tips to Get the Damn Thing Done) - In this post, I provide a step-by-step guide to start writing, including a few tools to help improve motivation and concentration.
"How to Write Faster (And, Hopefully, Better Too)" - Eliminating distractions and forcing your brain to write is key to getting more done. Here, I explain how you might be limiting yourself by too much thinking and not enough doing.
Worldbuilding
"Stop Making Everything So Damn Complicated!" - Why fantasy (and scifi) does not need to be dizzyingly intricate to be enjoyable.
"How to Kick Ass at Worldbuilding" - I offer some suggestions on how to create a grounded and interesting world that will not bore your readers, based on real life examples.
"Grounded vs. Airy Fantasy" by @aethersea - Excellent breakdown of different levels of groundedness in fantasy and why it's important to understand your own approach.
"Fantasy Guide to Building a Culture" by @inky-duchess - Thorough and methodical analysis of what can create a compelling fantasy culture, including those things that many fail to think about when writing.
"Writing tip - Research" by @pygmi-cygni - Fantastic assessment of the importance of research, including for fantasy stories. As Pygmi-Cygni said, a lot of people claim that they don't need to do any research for fantasy novels, which isn't true! Any parallels to IRL need to be realistic, or you will lose credibility.
Plotting
"How to Use Chomolungma for Writing Adventure Stories; Or, the Plot Mountain Method" - If you're sick of saving felines who should really figure their own shit out, it's time to head to Plot Mountain. In this post, I offer you an alternative to the formulaic "Save the Cat" and "Hero's Journey" which also incorporates tension, characterization, and forward momentum.

"Description, Momentum, and Tension; Or, How Not to Bore a Reader" - Why, when, and where to put description so that people don't skip over it. Hopefully.

"Writing Advice: Spicy Mundanity" - Wherein I explain how to stop having boring descriptions by packing in characterization.
"How to Write Smut?" by @unfriendlywriter - Wonderful examples of how to write heartstopping smut.
"How to pull off descriptions" by @fictionstudent - Fictionstudent has a ton of great posts, both about film analysis and about the art of writing. I especially liked this one because it discusses how important perspective is for descriptions and the importance of filling in the details as a character would rather than just throwing it all at the reader at one time.
"How to avoid White Room Syndrome" by @writerthreads - Fantastic and focused advice on how to ensure you're offering readers just enough setting to help them envision the world.
Characterization
"Writing Relatable Characters; Or, Using Human Failures to Your Advantage" - Explaining how you can use character flaws and human needs to create a relatable character. Also explains the basic development of a plot, which is about equilibrium.

Revisions
"Common Writing Issues that Reduce Readability" - Examples of fixes for four common issues: double describing, long sentences, overexplaining, and head hopping.
"How to Avoid Purple Prose" - A critical part of the revision process is making sure your writing is clear and balanced. In this post, I show a blatant example of purple prose and provide suggestions on how to make a more elegant passage.
"Differential Diagnosis When Your Writing Is Getting Worse" by @ariaste - Fantastic explanation by a professional writer about why you might feel like your writing is getting worse and what to do about it.

Publishing
"How to promote your book online : a discussion about social media (and few tips)" by writer-logbook - Great tips about how to get more interest in your book. Specific Research Advice
"Assassination Methods Through the Decades: A Writerâs Handbook" by @hayatheauthor - A thorough review of different assassination methods, including a section discussing common assassination methods by region!

I'll be adding onto this as I continue to scroll through my old likes and, of course, as I find more resources.

@forgettable-au FAN ANIMATION ! LOUD NOISE WARNING!
*What was it all for
Song: Vishnu <3 by Peter Cat Recording Co.
âŚokay.
The main inspiration for thisâŚcan be summed up with I LOVE HOW SAD THIS CONCEPT IS. BUT i also adore how WEIRD it is.
This whole thing must be pretty weird and creepy for the characters right??? Like- we dont know for certain what EXACTLY is gonna happen, but we know for a fact that Wingdings finds out hes in a game, then kills himself so he can be closer with god-
THATS PRETTY WEIRD đđ also sad but we can ignore that for now
I also experimented a tad with this in working with silence, so timing things at my own pace! It was really hard! I HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!
But, time for my FAVORITE PARTâŚ.ANALYSIS!!!
DISCLAIMER: some things stated as fact havenât been said in the blog/arent canon to the au itself, just my animation/theories/interpretation, cause iâm silly and headcanoning :3
TITLE:
The proper title ive given this is âTo Youâ which means 2 different and very vague things. What happened to you? and sending a message like âthis is To Youâ.
In that case, âyouâ is whichever version of Papyrus/Wingdings/Gaster you want- Its not exactly clear which version of him means âyouâ which is kinda the point. The lines blur together sometimesâŚ
But yeah, Gaster/crazy WD sends messages TOO himself so theyâre âTo Youâ
CONTEXT
Wingdings has JUST turned himself into Gaster. Ignore how impossible Sans interacting with him in this moment is, and just hear me out on the angst possibilities-
SCENE 1
As Sans approaches the mess- Gaster is encased in shadow, and looks at him. Expression not telling much- just looking blankly. Doesnât even look like heâs alive⌠just⌠moving. Also the eye thats open, is just a slit. because- perspective. BUT I also had fun putting that there and going hehehehe it looks like WD/Papyrusâ eye
Sans approaches, and getting engulfed in the shadow, leaving the light.
His expression here was REALLY fun and REALLY hard to draw. Angry? maybe. stunned and terrified? DEFINITELY.
In this context (that doesnât have a lot to go off of with the comics, YET) Sans knows that this was all very much intentional. He absolutely does not want to be angry, and is certainly only feeling it subconsciously.
But⌠he wanted so badly to understand, and enter his brother world. But now, Sans is just⌠Baffled. Hes like âwhat the fuck did you do???â
SCENE 2
Gaster continues to look blank. Looking up at Sans as he approaches, encasing him in even more shadow.
Sansâ hand reaches to Gasters face. From Sansâ perspective, his intentions are like checking for a pulse. Not literally ofc cause pulses arent on our face- but like, feeling for him. For a sign that something is there. (Itâs also meant to be something motherly/comforting)
But then, Gaster leans into the touch, somewhat reciprocating this wordless âive got youâ gesture. Thatâs what makes Sans go from Terrified to just purely grief stricken. His brother is still alive. And he loves him.
But this form wont last for longâŚFor universe fixing screw ups reasons :D đ
SCENE 3
Gaster then opens his eyes, revealing hes even still got eye lights available for him. Thats what just SHATTERS the dam, and Sans embraces him suddenly.
SCENE(S) 4
Then, the âresetâ happens, Gaster is gone, and Papyrus appears in place of Wingdings in his bed.
Nothing is boiling to add to a âfrozen in terrorâ feeling!
Now- drawing all of the differences between the past and present rooms. DESTROYED ME. i HAD SO MUCH FUN BUT I ALSO CRIED đ There are no thank-you letters to santa, no racecar bed, no silly bone painting, no action figures, just BORING
I also wanted to keep everything monochromatic, so ofc weâve got black and white for the void/Gaster, blue for Sans, red for Papyrus, and purple for Sans and Papyrus together.
The tape recorder and lab coat are still greyscale though cause Wingdings still has SOME of his stuff lying around. But the tapes are indecipherable, and Papyrus threw out that lab coat the first chance he got. It gave him the absolute worst feeling, worse than anything heâs ever experienced.
Something I also really enjoy is the fact that the dress shirts were still technically Wingdingsâ but theyâre red for Papyrus. The lab coat is the only real WINGDINGS thing that Papyrus wants absolutely no part in. Some things that were Wingdingsâ are now Papyrusâ cause :Dđ
in place of the bone painting are just family photos that I also have extra to say about. Someday I wanna make a comic of what happened to those/what I think would happen to em.
One day Papyrus is like âHEY UH- SANS! THESE PHOTOS! I DONâT LIKE LOOKING AT THEM! CAN WE NOT!?â Aka, he doesnât remember these things happening/these photos being taken⌠BUT THEYRE PHOTOS OF HIM.
So he just feels really uncomfortable looking at memories he should reasonably remember, but doesnât at all- and Sans gets that. But he keeps em in his drawer. Then! they hung up the bone thing in place of it cause SILLY!
But the family photos, I still had fun with. From left to right theyre a photo of Semi with the twins, the twins as baby bones, then as slightly older kids, then WDs graduation photo.
CONCLUSION!
This entire thing was so much fun, and I feel iâve really grown as an artist over the process of experimenting and not being knocked down by annoying setbacks,
Also, as usual, Works In Progressâ plus extra behind the scenes stuff will be posted shortly after this!! YIPPEEE!!! HAPPY NIGHTMARES!!!!!
OHHHH ALSO EXTRA ART!!!
âARENâT THEY BEAUTIFUL?â
That silly moment when your clone is really weirdly obsessed with stars and enthusiastically holds your eye sockets open to show you them
#wingdings loves his brother ( biggest plot twist)#dunno if hes even lucid in this#just that its instinct and subconscious emotions guiding him rn-#poor sans dudes đ#he just wanted the best for his brother#massive L on Gasters part ngl#massive L on Wingdingsâ part ngl#MASSIVE W FOR PAPYRUS#CAUSE WHEN HAS HE EVER DONE WRONG??? Dont ansewr that#when i catch you sunsestart when i catch you#wingdings stop please#i am incredibly excited to see the finality of forgettable au undertale wingdings electric boogaloo#wingdings please stop#gaster undertale#gaster wingdings#goopy wingdings#my favorite part of making this was when#uhmmmm#uh#uhhhhhhhhh#forgetâŚ#uhhhhhh

Dr. Ratio w/ Kavetham parents (x Aventurine)
warnings: none
word count: 5.7k
a/n: after the intro (one or two paragraphs) it switches to Ratioâs pov dw (beginning with the first line of dialogue), also if you donât like the Aventio ship- it is only mentioned after half of the writing. and in case youâre only here for Aventio- it begins halfway. tho I do recommend reading the full work for the best experience ^^
description: let's talk about Ratio's parents. I have been going on and leaving comments/hiding in hashtags here and there about how much I like the theory/fanon of Alhaitham and Kaveh being his parents (fluff, nostalgia)
now let us take into consideration that Teyvat does exist in the canon of Star Rail- and (if you've read/watched a few analysis) you might know that the planet on the loading screen is literally Teyvat- and now if you're questioning how is it separated from everything (read; not getting checked by the IPC) and similar- well.. it is locked off of any access. I'm truly not the right person to dwell into this, so do explore more about that if it has piqued your interest, and without further ado, these are my thoughts on our favorite canon couple in Genshin being Ratio's parents.
I can see Veritas coming back home (by some means) and his dads being just over the moon delighted to see him.
Kaveh would most likely ask him to sculpt something with him. Veritas, as it is portrayed, he sculpts mostly himself, and (in Kavehâs voice lines he says sculpting is his hobby) Kaveh enjoys that as well. so, it makes perfect sense that Kaveh taught him that, just a little Veritas wobbling around and putting his hands into the grayish looking water, little hands shaping the sculpture- Kaveh giggling at the sight, gods Kaveh would look so beautiful in that setting, Alhaitham smiling fondly- he wonât touch the water or the statue- the texture ainât right. so, when adult Veritas comes back home for a longer visit, of course Kaveh insists on his son sculpting something with him.
âhow have you been, Veritas? it has been quiet without you rambling with yourself in the middle of the night about the problems of the worldâ Kaveh snickers and pours fresh ground coffee.
âI do hope you have been taking care of yourself, you shouldnât let your job rule over your private life.â Alhaitham adds.
âI- I have been fine, and no my job isnât suffocating me, dad.â He answers in that annoyed voice reminding his fathers of a teenager. âI never said suffocating.â Alhaitham quietly adds, his son revealing himself in his word choice. He doesnât comment any further. The obvious is clear to all three men.
he goes to his room, fresh, clean as if he never left. his walls covered in sheets of paper with math equations, sketches of various buildings (even an attempt to sketch his fatherâs beautiful work of the palace of Alcazarzaray), quotes from those close to him in case memory ever betrayed him. the warm sunlight dripping into his room, the scent of spices, fresh coffee, herbal tea and warm cotton letting him know that he is home. nostalgia isnât something he allows to rule over him, but in this moment, he is weak to it and indulges in the safety of his room. the rough texture of the sheets soothes him and all the puzzle pieces seem to fall in their place. he needed this. his dads, this vacation. he falls asleep with a small smile on his face that night, thereâs perhaps no better place to be than home.
little kid Veritas was truly born into the right family with his intellect. perfect parents to take care of all of his âquirksâ, and hunger for knowledge. and, Alhaitham and Kaveh are so proud of the man he grew up to be, âyou know that love for math and numbers, is all you.â Alhaitham comments, not raising his gaze from the book in his hand, the early morning sun just barely grazing the room. Kaveh smiles and walks over to his partner, his lips leaving a soft kiss on the top of the younger manâs head, âhe is equally you and me, Alhaitham.â both men smile for the next minute, Alhaithamâs free arm moving around Kavehâs waist since he stood right next to where he sat. âexcept the hair, that he takes after his uncle.â Kaveh laughs melodically at that remark, âwell, he crafted the hair genome-altering potion himself because we allowed him to ask Tighnari too many questions which he was all too happy to answer.â Alhaitham nods, âit fits him. the indigo. canât even remember what it was before if Iâm being honest.â Kaveh all but shrieks, turning his voice to a whisper to not wake their son, âthatâs because he did it when he was 4.â
speaking of his âuncleâ, Wanderer is someone Veritas was very fond of. or rather, is still very fond of. such a genius mind, a clever being with a puppet body, snarky, sarcastic- Veritas felt confused why he didnât hang out even more often with his dads; they seemed like the perfect match of personalities and intellect. nonetheless, he did come over occasionally, and was always met with, something he now knows to cherish; the soft smile, the gentle voice and the cozy embrace of his uncle who likes tolerates children. and especially since he didnât come over often, teenage Veritas would run away take a walk to go see him, he always looked young so that made him seem even more approachable to the young boy. heâd seek knowledge, and intelligent conversations- not that his fathers or his other uncles didnât provide that. he simply needed someone outside of that roster. an outsider. well⌠half of an outsider, who can keep secrets. not that heâd have many secrets to share, Wanderer would gladly amuse the kid, happy with the respect the child gave him and intrigued by the questions he'd hear.
âalright kid, it is late, off you go.â
âitâs dark yes, you wonât see me off?â
âyou can walk, canât you? now go.â Wanderer zooms off into the shadows. Veritas developed confidence in his late night walks home and bravery, not knowing- until maybe in his adult life, that Wanderer always flew above him on his way home. making sure that he was safe. and every time, maybe out of respect, maybe out of a sense of duty, or perhaps⌠even⌠companionship? friendship? heâd slip a note under the door âthe kid was with me, Wâ
âis uncle Wanderer still in Sumeru?â Veritas indulged between bites of pita pockets. he just did a workout session with Alhaitham, his dad is where he picked up the healthy habit of working out and staying active.
âhe should be. I mean he didnât move out to a different region if thatâs what you meanâ Kaveh answered with a nod in Alhaithamâs direction, to confirm or debunk what he said in case he had different information. Alhaitham shook his head, he didnât know anything else, âhe should be in Sumeru city.â
Veritas makes his way on the incline of the Divine Tree, last step, and, âah well if it isnât my favorite nephew?â the voice said sarcastically. a whoosh of wind and the short man with a large hat- obscuring anyoneâs view, flew down.
Veritas smiled, âuncle. it has been very long. and the years have⌠treated you wellâ he chuckled, attempting to tease the older man.
Wanderer scoffed, âis that some poor attempt at a joke? perhaps, you should spend more time with the general on this vacation. brush up yourâŚâ vague gesture, âcomedy.â he hovered and sat down on the stone wall.
âI doubt comedy is something Iâm fit to pursue.â
they talked for hours that day. catching up and Veritas dumping, if at all possible, even more questions onto his uncle about life and existentialism. the sun started setting and Wanderer got up, ending their conversation as always before it got too late in the night. he gestured to Veritas to come closer, to which he bent lower- the height difference was painfully obvious, âyou really grew so big.â Wanderer softly commented, Veritas could see the same kindness and endearment in his eyes that he saw as a child. Veritas always meant much more to Wanderer than he ever let on. to be called uncle, considered a family member, and not be asked to change himself. Wanderer appreciated Alhaitham and Kaveh, and his nephew is someone heâd die for. he pinched his cheek, âyou take care of yourself, young man.â Wanderer smiled for a second and flew up out of sight. and, just like all those years ago, he flew above him out of sight, making sure he got safely home⌠after all, Veritas isnât a vision carrier.
âpuppets- puppets canât cry, stop thisâ heâd mumble to himself as a few more teardrops fell on the parchment paper he pushed under the door.
âthe kid was with meâ
second night he dreamed. Nahida smiled in this dream and waved âwelcome home, Veritasâ, once awake he sat up immediately out of breath.
stepping into the kitchen and there she sat.
âoh Veritas, it is so good to see youâ she chirps, jumping off of her chair and walking over, he bends over to pick her up so she may properly hug him.
âauntie Nahida- I- I seem to have forgotten you knew the exact moment I laid my head on the pillow two nights ago that I got back homeâ Veritas would mumble, he didnât realize that he would be this happy to see her.
âoh- Lesser lord Kusanali, you didnât use the door- um- would you like some tea?â
âLesser lord Kusanali, good morning, Iâll fetch the tea.â Alhaitham would add, making Kaveh sit down so he doesnât stumble over something, his husband is always jittery when the archon comes to visit.
being close to Wanderer meant Nahida heard of him, and of course, she knew about Alhaithamâs and Kavehâs son, hence upon visiting the kid often she became the auntie Nahida. Veritas grew up knowing the full truth, his dads arenât the type to sugarcoat it or lie.
so in this embrace, Veritas realized how many questions he had for the tiny god in his arms. the god of wisdom. although, that might be impolite⌠he was silent for a bit.
Nahida giggled, âask,â her legs swaying on the chair, âI know you must have so many more things you wish to know. especially with your age, doctor~â she giggled even more. and therefore it became a discussion, Veritas carefully forming his words, his dads listening to the conversation until they had to leave to lunch with friends. âcome if you have time, your uncles Tighnari and Cyno will be there. they would be happy to see you.â Alhaitham adds as they leave the house.
on his way to the tavern he hears a woman yell his name, frozen in his step he turns and sees her running towards him. âCollei!â Veritas smiles, opening his arms and she jumps at him. he gives her a spin and tightly embraces her, âhow have you been- youâre still amusingly short-â he laughs, and she playfully punches him,
âis that how you greet your favorite cousin?â
âyou mean my only cousin?â
âdonât get snarky with me- I got better at communication and will use sarcasm to my advantage!â Collei laughed happily as she answered. in his mind, she has always communicated well with him. he never saw any issues, only fondness for his older cousin.
they catch up on the street, his cousin is someone he cared about a lot in his youth. a peer who he didnât shoo off, who didnât dislike him, and who was and still is an amazing, accepting, intelligent person. one stayed and the other one moved away, yet their communication never failed, never changed, and the love always there for one another.
Cyno and Tighnari basically tackle him with love and affection. Cyno wraps him up in a blanket of dad jokes (not literal), while Veritas shares stories of foxians on the Xianzhou Luofu. it is a pleasant lunch filled with stories, and the tallest man at the table getting babied and treated as if he is fifteen years old again. somewhat bittersweet. Cyno insists they play a round of TCG, Veritas winning easily, âit is pure strategy, uncle Cynoâ he tries to hide his smirk as he answers to a frowning general; Alhaitham adds quietly, âthatâs my boy. well done.â
His uncle Cyno was the one to teach him Genius invocation TCG, during their trips to the desert they spent their evenings playing cards. âthis is hardly fair, uncle. I keep losingâ the small boy frowned.
âVeritas, when you are old enough, and more experienced you will, maybe, come close to winning.â Cyno answers, not showing mercy to the kid- he must learn the rules of the game properly, as he is teaching him survival in the desert. which, over the years of many trips, resulted in Veritas growing well acclimated to the weather conditions and scorching sun there, a good life skill to have.
on the other hand, he also grew accustomed to the moisture-heavy air and high heat of the rainforest. going on many camping trips with his uncle Tighnari. learning of different plants and creatures, gaining proficiency in biology before he even got to go to school. nights in the Gandharva Ville were also something he remembers fondly, his cousin, someone he holds in high regard, was always nice to him, pleasant, no matter his attitude and âadaptingâ behavior. Collei never judged, they were, in a way, both patient with each other and led intellectually stimulating conversations for both parties. Veritas wouldnât be the same man he is today if it werenât for his peer.
Madam Faruzan is someone he didnât expect to see in the house of Daena. he found her⌠interesting in his youth, but he moved past the interest when the well of knowledge for him dried up. on the other hand, Faruzan adored the little boy who was respectful and smart. they chatted for a few minutes and he quickly excused himself, otherwise, heâd have to put the bust on and the people of Sumeru have spent years not seeing such strange behavior and he knew it would attract even more attention. his younger dadâs voice would echo in his head, âit never matters if it makes others around you uncomfortable- you take care of yourself. if it helps you, if you feel better, then wear it.â and the scene of his dad placing the kid sized plaster head on his head played in Veritasâ mind. he feels incredibly lucky to have such amazing parents.
âhowâs the traveler?â
âoh them? they found their sibling and Iâm afraid I havenât seen them in a bit. but they always come around, you know how they are. unpredictable~â Kaveh chuckles, and fondly recalls his friend with gold hair.
âor perhaps they changed bodies and personalities and embody someone you know outside of Teyvat.â
âdaaad.â Veritas exhaled, âyour attempts at humor get more annoying with yearsâ he rolled his eyes at Alhaitham.
in a suggestive voice he joked a bit more, âmaybe now they are less polite, maybe they even have- gray hair like I do.â
for a second the image of the Trailblazer flashed before his eyes but he dismissed it, âdaad please can you contain yourself. I would appreciate it. those books on comedy did you no good,â his head turned to Kaveh, âdad why did you buy him that?â
âfor pure shits and giggles, my dear boy.â Kaveh answered with a grin.
one can be as put together as they want and as old as they can be, but once one is home⌠we all turn back into children.
there was a knock on the door, Kaveh got up to open it, âgood morning, yes?â
âah hello, is doctor Ratio here- his device seems to not be working on Teyvat it seems so errâŚâ
âVeritas itâs for you!â he said louder and turned back to face the man in front of him, âand you are?â
âdad-â he gently pushed Kaveh aside, âyouâre too flashy- get inside Aventurine!â he hissed in a hushed tone.
Veritas stands with his hand on his forehead, shaking his head gently. Kaveh seems amused with a smile on his face and sits down on the couch, next to the sofa armchair where Alhaitham made himself sit in no time. Kaveh can tell by the look in his husbandâs eyes that he is entertained.
the young man, which their son addressed as a translucent quartz⌠Aventurine took a step towards Veritas. âhey- doc- I didnât mean to- maybe I shouldâve read some stuff about the planet before jumping-â
âmaybe?â the tone of voice was obviously a displeased one, even raising in tone with a sharp glare. Veritas inhaled and exhaled. like a child doing a play he turned to face his parents, âdads, this is Kakavasha,â Aventurine did a small wave, âhe is an occasional work partner of mine and I suppose that is why he came here.â he turned to him and raised an eyebrow.
âwell, yes, your phone- I mean device wasnât working- actually nothing came up- I grew worried,â his voice turned into a whisper, âyou know with this planet being so gatekept and outside of the IPCâs or the Aeonsâ control soâŚâ
âworried?â Veritas asked. Kaveh and Alhaitham were only missing popcorn, this has been the most entertaining thing they have watched in years. going all the way back to when they visited Fontaine and saw a wonderful drama performance.
âyes,â the blond man answered.
âletâs-â Kaveh cleared his throat, âIâm Kaveh, Veritasâ father, this is my husband Alhaitham. why donât you stay a bit- no need to rush off to⌠wherever you zapped from, hm?â he smiled.
âthis, being the isolated area you claim, surely two travels in one day are not good, hm? stay the night. we will make room.â Alhaitham nodded.
and oh, Aventurine could read them in a second, street smarts this guy. he saw every single detail of the two men and how it translated into Veritas. âIâd hate to be a bother- but Iâm clever enough to know you two would insist.â Aventurine smiles. Alhaitham and Kaveh hold back any laughs bubbling up their throats from giddiness. for them two, a pinning couple such as themselves, something as this short interaction between Aventurine and Veritas was as obvious as Cyno being the general Mahamatra. visible from the top of the Divine Tree. the only question was, where do they stand together?
âI. youâre right, but I donât think it is necessary-â Veritas begins only to be cut off by Kaveh.
âyouâre forgetting yourself- didnât you say he was flashy? you practically dragged him inside.â
Veritas cursed himself mentally, this was truly not what he had in plan. âfine. follow along, dear gambler.â he walked down the hallway and Aventurine followed quickly along.
Kaveh looked at Alhaitham with wide eyes and held back the urge to bite down on a pillow. âI will fucking scream, our son, OUR SON, got bitches?â Â âwas that real? that just happened, yes?â
Alhaitham was speechless in any verbal form, but his facial expression was priceless. âdear. Archons. thank you lesser lord Kusanali for blessing our boy.â Alhaitham hoped their son would never be lonely⌠and over the years it truly did turn him to even hope for the archons to show mercy upon him. âhe also isnât an idiotâ Alhaitham continued.
âmhm, quite a beautifully well-mannered young man along with that,â Kaveh added.
inside his room, âwhy- this was truly unnecessary- my dads will now-â
âdoc, calm down your parents are great- is this where Iâll stay?â
âthis is my room!â he narrowed his eyes, Aventurine nodded and stayed quiet, âyes⌠this is where youâll stay. donât get⌠cocky about itâ
âoh please doc, it isnât the first time we share a bed.â
âchange into something Sumeru appropriate if you wish to leave this house at any time during your stay.â Veritas ponders for a moment, âmy clothes are too big and so are any of my dads- uncle Cyno is shorter than you so thatâs a no, uncle Tighnari has a tail so thatâs also a no, uncle Wanderer wears Inazuma-Sumeru styled clothes and also too small- I will have to buy.â he sighs after his short analysis.
âmoney is never the problem- credits are something I have a lot of and you know that- why?â
âthey use mora here, not credits.â
Aventurine falls quiet, a world with no credits⌠a land of opportunity! he shall gain mora!
âno. donât you gamble- the rules here are different-â knock, knock.
âVeritas, will you go buy Kakavasha clothes or shall I sew something of some old pieces?â Kaveh asked against the closed door.
âI- dad can you go buy- we need to talk- I canât at this moment.â
âyeah, Iâll go.â silence, he didnât move away yet. âIâll take your father with me.â
a distant muffled voice answered, âI donât like shopping for clothes, Kaveh.â âShush Alhaitham we are going.â
âI doubt your worry was justified- you knew you couldnât contact me hereâ
âyour parents seem nice. and now Iâm here, so let us not dwell on wouldâve, couldâve, shouldâve hm?â
Veritas sighs. they exchange a few more words and he leaves for dinner with Collei previously arranged.
the sun is setting when he gets back, Aventurine got nicely acquainted with his parents and⌠well, Veritas is standing frozen at the entrance door. Aventurine is wearing white Sumeru style clothes, with pretty gold accents and splashes of purple and cyan. there has never been a lovelier man than him, your beauty leaves me speechless. He clears his throat, ânow that you look appropriate, allow me to take you on a walk, yes?â to which the blond man obliges and they leave the house.
absentmindedly he talks of the architecture and how people live in Sumeru city. they arrive at a point that oversees the vast area towards Port Ormos and they stand there in silence for a few moments.
âthe clothes are very comfortable, I hope Iâm wearing them well,â Aventurine says with a big smile.
âyou lookâŚâ beautiful, ravishing, heavenly, out of this world, take my hand in marriage, ââŚyou wear them well, yesâ Veritas cuts his thoughts off.
âcâmon doc, we are on your home planet, in your city. no one knows us here- at least not as the cornerstone of the Aeon of preservation and the member of the Intelligentsia guild. we can relax.â
Veritas rolls his shoulders and takes a deep breath. âyouâre right. ⌠you look⌠beautiful. I⌠I bought you something- it was meant to be a gift when I got back but⌠hereâ he hands him a small blue velvet box. Veritas doubts Aventurine ever enjoys wearing jewelry, not with the way he quickly strips himself off of his rings, the watch, and necklace the moment he gets home. Aventurine opens the box and tilts his head in thought, âthis isâŚ?â
âa hairpiece. sort of like mine. a pin. Iâm sure you understand.â Veritas nods to himself. Aventurine hands him the pin, a dark blue-golden piece displaying a certain mushroom. âput it on me.â Veritasâ eyes shift to the shorter man, if he wasnât such a calm person his hands would shake in this moment. his fingers gently grip the pin and place it on the soft blond hair.
âgood?â
âperfect. I chose well.â Veritas cannot hide how flustered he is at that moment despite his cold demeanor when his cheeks show a shade of pink.
âDoctor⌠Veritas. I would like to enjoy this vacation- with you. us, together, no one to say anything, may we⌠relax?â Aventurine says softly, his hand shyly coming to hold Veritasâ making him look at the man. âthe view is beautiful from here, the sunset, colors, everything in warm colors, look.â he says, Aventurine shifts his gaze and Veritas keeps looking at him. he raises their joined hands and kisses his knuckles, âyou mean everything to meâ he whispers.
Aventurine smiles, returning his gaze to him. Veritas continues in a soft voice, âyou wear the clothes well. it is⌠such a vision to see you in the clothing of my world. to see you standing next to me on the streets I grew up on, to see you meet my parents⌠also I have planned to stay for quite a while so expect to be here for at least a month or travel back to the ship.â
âI think I might stay for a few days. I like the sight of you here, you seem much more relaxed than you usually are, Doc. itâs like you feel safer here. and given how many dangerous specimens are on this planet I am surprised by that fact.â Aventurine gives his hand a small squeeze. âIâd like to get to know your family.â thereâs an underlying sadness he sees in the shorter manâs eyes, perhaps the yearning for a safe family of his own.
âI have a big family, uncles, and aunts, a cousin⌠Iâd be happy to introduce you.â
âfriends? you didnât say friends.â
âah⌠those. family is what I have here. and you.â Veritas pushes the thoughts of his childhood away, friends⌠not something he had a big privilege of experiencing. He always preferred his uncles, aunts, truly the only real friend he ever had was Collei. perhaps the other kids werenât even worth it.
the walk ends with them gazing at the sunset, holding hands.
at night they share his bed, his childhood bed. in the privacy of his home he feels safe enough to lean his face closer and gently kiss him. his lips pressing onto Aventurineâs with a mumble of good night. It feels surreal⌠his partner with him, in his arms, in his home. Aventurine that night dreams of a small white-haired person who welcomes him to Sumeru and says she is happy to meet him. in the morning when he shares the dream, between kisses Veritas lays along his jawline, the doctor stops to inform him that that was the Dendro archon, which results in a gasping Aventurine and a longer time in bed explaining the function of gods and deities in this world.
Veritas walks into the kitchen, following the scent of Sabz meat stew. his parents are in the study so he freely wraps his arms around Aventurine and lowers his head into the crook of his neck. âsmells good.â
âmhm, your dad gave me the recipe- I thought Iâd try it out. taste it!â Aventurine turns a bit in his arms, lips pursed blowing on the wooden spoon. it tastes good, melts on the tongue, his eyes widen and it is all the confirmation Aventurine needs. Veritas kisses his temple, âIâm so happy youâre here, Kakavasha.â
steps on the wooden floor knock him out of his bubble, his cheeks blush- being physical with his partner isnât something he wants his parents to see. he puts the plaster head on and sits down. luckily in this household, it is perfectly normal to self-regulate in such a way. he can count on both hands just how many times he saw his dad without the noise-canceling pieces he uses. half of those were when he was sleeping, he remembers as a kid when heâd run to their bedroom, in tears from a nightmare- in mere seconds heâd have the devices on his head- be it Kaveh putting them on or he himself getting them on. after which they would both turn to comfort the small boy. any other time, was his dads quietly chatting on the sofa, and upon his arrival his younger dad would waste no time to put them on. two voices being too much. Alhaitham reassured him plenty of times so he doesnât feel hurt by it, especially now, that he is old enough to understand; the only person he can tolerate, he enjoys listening fully to (not all the time tho) is Kaveh. to prove the case further, as a teenager he found out that his dadâs device has a mode which makes sure that his older dadâs voice always pushes through noise cancellation. true love at its finest. and what a hopeless romantic his dad is to do so and feel like that. the apple doesnât fall far from the tree. he does wear his bust much less when he is around Kakavasha.
and now not even the plaster head can hide it when he tilts his head on his hand and stares at the blond man. Alhaitham smirks, he sees through it oh so easily, âdo you need any help, Kakavasha? if not, Kaveh and I are leaving to go to the Akademiya, update our retirement plans and so on. although, Iâm sure my son can help out if the need arises.â
âI am doing fine so far, thank you sirâ
âno need for sir, Alhaitham is fine.â
âIâd feel impolite to address my partnerâs parents like that,â he speaks out loud before thinking. he stops stirring the food, when did he- how- when did he start feeling so safe that he stopped overthinking as much? Alhaitham nods with a barely noticeable smile and turns to leave the kitchen. âdonât burn the house down, you two.â
Veritas plants his face into his palms, covering the plaster head even more. Kakavasha turns around to face him when the doors close. âhah, um⌠sorry?â
Veritas gently takes his plaster head off with a small sigh, his cheeks are colored a light shade of pink, and eyes looking elsewhere, âit happens. Iâd love to think my dad took your âpartnerâ in a business terminology, but⌠nobody in this household is that idiotic. and⌠I doubt we were any less than obvious, especially to a special case such as my parents.â
âspecial case?â Kakavasha hangs onto his words.
âsome other time Iâll tell you about their situation- or perhaps you may ask them yourself. watch the food, dear.â Veritas gestures with his chin to the cooking pot.
Kakavasha does that indeed, chatting along with Alhaitham and Kaveh, the men more than happy to share their story- and get to know their sonâs partner.
âI was told I might find you here,â he says in a soft voice, sitting next to the tall man.
Veritas raises his head from his notes. he is sitting at a large table in the house of Daena, surrounded by books, papers and a few pens. âwho told you? I wasnât avoiding you- my dad told me they added a few books and borrowed some from the Temple of silence, I couldnât resist reading through it all.â
âyour dads. am I bothering you, doc? Iâm sure there are some books I can entertain myself withâ Kakavasha gazes around.
âwith no offense, doubtful. it is usually highly dry material, unworthy of your time and energy. I am willing to take a break, may I tempt you with a walk, dear?â
âyes, you may.â Kakavasha smiles at the flirty question.
saying goodbye is never easy. when being home is nice, pleasant- it makes it much harder. Aventurine left a week or so ago, and went back in the outer orbit of the planet. Veritas spent more time with his close family, having more shared meals and spending his early mornings in the Akademiyaâs library, even going so far to visit the actual Temple of silence.
Kavehâs arms are holding him tightly in an embrace, his voice slightly shaky, but he is trying not to let it show, âI will miss you so much, my dear boy. please stay safe, donât get into unnecessary trouble, eat a lot, take care of yourself and you can always come home if it gets tiring. or just- one day come home to retire, maybe? and bring that boy with you, your father and I like him, he is welcome any time.â
Alhaithamâs strong arms hug him with a few pats on the back, in a monotone voice, which Veritas recognizes as warmth, he softly speaks, âI stand behind everything your dad already said. do take care of yourself, we will miss you a lot.â
âI donât want to cry.â Veritas whispers, standing in front of his parents, Kaveh inhales sharply holding back his own tears, Alhaitham tightly holds his hand, his jaw clenched as he also tries not to grow too upset. âwe shouldnât cry,â the retired scribe says, âit isnât good to say goodbye in tears, we will see each other again. we are immensely happy you came to see us, Veritas. I love you- we both love you, and safe travels.â he ends it with a nod, Kaveh nods as well.
âI love you tooâ Veritas whispers back, he jumps into both of them, hugging them one more time. he steps back, waves and, with the usage of technology unnatural to Teyvat, he is gone. Zapped away into the orbit.
âI miss him already.â Kaveh doesnât cry as much as he thought he would when their son leaves.
âVeritas is out there doing the best he can for himself, and he isnât alone. we both know how much it matters that he isnât alone.â Alhaithamâs eyes appear sad despite his words. the men sit on the couch cuddled in each otherâs arms. âyouâre right⌠he isnât alone.â
Ratio, back on the ship, eyes filled with tears threatening to drop meet the watercolor ones of his partner. âI- I⌠I miss them already, Kakavasha.â Aventurine walks over to hug him, his hand moving in circles on his back. âIâve got you. Iâve got you.â
after a few minutes, Aventurine quietly says, âwe will visit them again. we can come over for my birthday? I⌠really enjoyed being surrounded by family. maybe youâd let me meet more of them this time, yes?â
Veritas smiles, tears dried up, he really has a way of bringing his mood up. âof course, we will visit for your birthday then.â
âI look forward to calling them my family like you do,â Aventurine adds with an all-too-familiar smile.
âis that-â Ratio tilts his head, âis that some backward way of proposing?â
Aventurine chuckles, shaking his hands, ânope. not yet. thereâs time for us to do⌠thatâ
Ratio smirks, with an exhale he leans his head on the shorter manâs shoulder, âthank you⌠for coming along. Iâm glad you met them.â
Aventurine silently smiles and kisses his cheek. perhaps the next time they come around they will make certain vows.

A musical Polinalysis part 2
So I spent hours yesterday writing an analysis on the music we hear when Colin and Penelope first kiss, only to realize a couple hours later that...the kiss isn't the first time we hear that theme!! So of course I had to keep writing about it, because I just think this is so cool...
Alright, check this out... The very first time we hear the theme is the very first time Penelope sees Colin at the beginning of the season. We've just seen Colin flirting with that gaggle of ladies; he approaches his family, and as soon as Pen catches sight of him, we hear this:
But wait. I'm going to back up a sec, because in my last post, I said this was Polin's theme:
Pretty different, huh? So what's going on here?
Well, in the first transcription above, I have us in G Major, starting our theme with the familiar intervals of the fifth note of the key going up to the tonic, or first, note of the key, and then up to the second note (in this case, from D to G to A) and so on for the next few notes. Everything sounds normal here except that we're in a different key (G Major for the first sound clip, D-flat Major for the second one).
But then what happens halfway through with all those # marks? These accidentals are called sharps, and they indicate chromaticisms in the key, or notes that don't naturally occur in the key that we're in. Another way to write this so that the notes do naturally occur in the key (it sounds the same as the first transcription above, it's just expressed with a different key signature) is this...
The part I've circled in red indicates a key change. At the beginning, we're in G Major. Halfway through, we move into g minor. These keys are related in that their scales start on the same noteâthe tonic of both keys is the note G. However, the scales themselves do not sound the sameâthese keys do not contain the same notes. Here is a G Major scale:
And here is a g minor scale:
Notice that the g minor scale sounds a little darker, spookier, maybe more intense. This is the typical quality of minor scales in generalâthey tend to have a sadder sound.
So, okay, that was a lot of music theory, but what does this all mean for our Polin theme? I think it's so compelling that the first time we hear this theme, we have a key change halfway through from major to minorâfrom a relatively bright, happy sound to a more intense, morose sound. This is the first time we see Colin and Penelope occupying the same space this season, the first time Penelope sees Colin after his return (and it's honestly unclear to me whether Colin sees Penelope, as well...he looks in her direction but doesn't seem to recognize that she's there?). And the first statement we get of the music that is going to represent them throughout the next few episodes has a dramatic twist halfway through! Much like their relationship? Much like season 3 itself?? I think this speaks of conflict and intrigue to comeâfor these first four episodes and the season overall.
But that's not all! At the end of this episode, we have Colin and Penelope making their arrangement for Colin to help Penelope find a husband. And as they shake hands and share meaningful looks, just before Lady Whistledown's narration starts the close-out of the episode, this is what plays in the background:
Unlike the very first statement of the theme, this one does not start in a major key and then modulate to a minor keyâit is fully minor from the beginning (the key of f-sharp minor is my guess).
Knowing what we know about minor keys having a sadder, more intense sound, this statement of the theme is clearly meant to convey conflict. There are two big conflicts being set up in this moment between Colin and Penelope: 1) the arc for the first half of the season, of Colin trying to help Penelope find a husband and oops falling in love with her instead, and 2) the arc that we'll be seeing in the second half of the season, of Penelope's secret identity and what that means for her and Colin's relationship. The music is telling us, as Colin and Penelope grasp hands, that we need to be wary.
There is one more iteration of this theme that I want to talk about, and it occurs during the scene when Penelope meets Colin at Bridgerton house for one of their lessons (the scene that is infamous for Colin putting his hand on Pen's back Colin what are you doiiiiiing we are so scandalized!! *gasp*).
The moment Colin greets Penelope in the entryway, we hear this very softly in the background:
This abbreviated theme repeats several time throughout the above scene, and it builds as it's repeated. First there's a couple measures of the theme, then a couple measures without, then the theme is stated again, followed by another couple measures without, and then we get three statements of the theme one right after another in different instruments, until Colin and Penelope make it to the drawing room.
In sharp contrast to the intense, doomsday-foretelling version of the theme we got at the end of ep1, this version is light and playful. We're back in a major keyâand in fact, we seem to be in A Major, which is the relative major of f-sharp minor (the key we were in at the end of ep1). That is to say, f-sharp minor and A Major share a key signatureâthey contain the same notesâbut since the A Major scale starts on an A rather than an F-sharp, it has a brighter, cheerier sound.
So here's what I think is happening with all this musical storytelling. In the beginning of the first episode, we get our first statement of Polin's theme, starting in a pleasant major key sound and turning sharply into a darker minor key sound halfway through. This foreshadows Polin's narrative arc, and the idea of more drama to come in the second half of the season, just as Colin and Penelope think they've found their happiness.
Then at the end of the first episode, we get a statement of Polin's theme entirely in a minor keyâa callback to the second half of the first instance of their theme at the beginning of the episode, and another moment of foreshadowing which sets us up for the main conflicts we will see this season and in Polin's relationship. Episode one is all about setting the stage for the rest of what's to come.
Then at the beginning of ep2, when we hear the theme again, it's like we're being oriented back towards the first half of the iteration that we heard at the beginning of ep1. It's saying, "Okay, the music in ep1 told you to expect both joy and danger, and now here we are at the joy part." We're having fun right now. The romantic tension is still fairly breezy at this point. We haven't yet gotten into the gut-wrenching angst of watching the best friend we accidentally fell in love with about to get engaged to another man.
At the same time, the build-up of the theme the way we hear it in the scene at Bridgerton houseâthe way we get multiple statements of only the first couple measuresâalso creates some tension. The theme keeps getting cut off partway through, so naturally we want to hear more; we want to hear it keep going all the way to resolution. Keep in mind, up to this point, we have not yet (I don't think, anyway...) heard the theme all the way to resolution in a major key. So far, we've heard the theme: 1) start in a major key and end in a minor key, 2) start and end in a minor key, and 3) start in a major key but not end at all. And when do we finally, finally get to hear the theme all the way through in a major key, without all the twists and interruptions that we've experienced previously?
Polin's first kiss.
And it's beautiful, and soaring, and feels something like catharsis...
But of course, even hearing their theme all the way through leaves us wanting more, because at that moment, their arc is still just beginning.

Iâm obsessed with @wheelersboyâs theory that Mike thinks Will is in love with El. Itâs one of those takes thatâs so simple, yet so perfectly explains every odd little detail you couldnât quite account for before, that you know youâre on to a winner.
I always thought it was bizarre that the Willel reunion at NINA was framed in blatant love triangle imagery:
If this was supposed to be yet another reminder that the sad widdle gay boy has fee-fees for his best friend, weâd expect him to be gazing at Mike or otherwise looking conflicted at both of them. But he isnât. His steady, adoring gaze is for El only. Yes, he loves her, but that love is strictly fraternal, so why the romance symbolism?
Is it straight-bait? This scene comes after his thinly-veiled love confession to Mike (in the same episode, no less), and the Duffers and Noah both made a point of confirming that Will was gay in post-vol.2 interviews, so making the audience think that Will is in love with El clearly wasnât the intention here.
The Willel romance-coding isnât for the audience -- itâs for Mike.
We often joke about Mike being crushed that Will didnât laugh at his vomit green socks, but follow Willâs gaze -- itâs a little hard to see in the still image, but heâs staring at El, checking to see if sheâs going to heed his advice. Mike's discomfort isnât because heâs upset that Will didnât like his joke, itâs because he doesnât understand the weird tension between these two and is frustrated that his attempt to lighten the mood didnât dispel it.
Mikeâs smart enough to correctly connect the dots by the time Will starts sobbing in the van though: Will is destroying himself in his efforts to be supportive of the relationship between his best friend and the person heâs in love with.
But heteronormativity and a severe inferiority complex lead him to draw the wrong conclusion -- he thinks heâs the best friend and El is the one Willâs in love with, and that gets confirmed in his mind when he catches them making goo-goo eyes at each other at NINA.
And not once, after figuring it out, does he get jealous about it -- he guides El into Willâs arms at NINA, he looks conflicted as hell during the âI love youâ monologue as Will hovers over his shoulder -- he just wants them to be happy and is prepared to put his own feelings aside to make it happen, even though it would hurt him terribly to do so. Exactly the same fucking thing Will is doing. Itâs utterly farcical. I love this theory so much.
Iâd like to springboard off this by taking a look at what it implies about S5.
Between Willâs history with Vecna and the Wonder Twins foreshadowing--
--itâs looking pretty likely that Will and El are going to be spending a significant amount of time together next season.
So we can already see that conditions are perfect for Mike to go through a similar arc as Will did in S4: being a third wheel between his best friend and the person heâs in love with and feeling like he can never truly be more than a third wheel, leading him to sacrifice himself in an effort to support what he thinks they have together.
Mike is very much at risk of doing something stupidly self-harming in S5 -- this is the same kid who jumped off a cliff to protect Dustinâs baby teeth, after all. He feels like he has no value if he isnât needed by Superman. And thereâs a goddamn mind-reading despair demon stalking his friend group.
Of course, itâll all work out in the end. Heâll be saved at the last moment, the truth will be tearfully revealed, and weâll finally get that big, dramatic, affirming kiss for our OTP.
You might have noticed that everything Iâve said in this analysis so far is consistent with either Byler or Milevn being endgame.
Many Milevns and GA members donât just believe that Milevn will triumph over Byler -- they believe there isnât any conflict between Milevn and Byler in the first place. The lack of evidence that Mike isnât into boys is meaningless to the heteronormative mindset -- heâs the protagonist and dating a girl, therefore heâs straight, therefore Willâs hopes are dead in the water, therefore Mike has no romantic dilemma to solve.
By introducing a misunderstanding in which Mike imagines that his best friend is competing for his girlfriend -- couching his dilemma in relatable heterosexual terms -- the audience will be forced to accept that Mike is experiencing a distressing internal conflict involving Will and romance that wonât be resolved until the queer truth comes out.
The GA felt bad for Will in S4 because they assumed there was nothing he could do about it, but theyâll be tearing their hair out with frustration at Mike in S5 -- âyouâre wrongly assuming heâs straight, you idiot! Just talk to him and this will all be cleared up!!â
It would be an absolutely genius way of getting the audience to question heteronormativity without them even realizing theyâre questioning heteronormativity.
Once Mikeâs queerness is revealed, the parallels between his arc and Willâs will suddenly become clear, and the audience will realize that, despite his straight-passing invisibility, Mike was just the other side of the same gay coin Will was on all along.

WELCOME HOME THEORIES AND ANALYSIS! FRIDAY THE 13th EDITION!
HUH?? A surprise Welcome Home Update???
WITH LORE AND SECRETS?!?!?!
Ohohohoho! You know yours truly loves lore! And oh boy... Theres a lot to unpack here.... So buckle your seatbelts folks! I might've discovered something BIG
WARNING! THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE HALLOWEEN UPDATE! OH AND THIS IS GONNA BE VERY VERY LONG!
Ok, first things first, THE THEORY
I might've figured out who the main antagonist could be, and it's not Wally or Home. In fact, it has been staring at us the entire time, we've just never realized it.
I think the main villain of Welcome Home could be the spooky swirly void living inside of Home.
"WHAT?!?! This early on in story??" I hear you say! "This couldn't be possible!"
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE DEAR VIEWER! And truth be told, there could be multiple antagonists in Welcome Home, but all evidence points to this swirly guy being the source of everything wrong thats happening. Also, from now on, I'll be calling it the Entity. (Spooky swirly man sounds so silly!)
EVIDENCE 1: It makes people sick.
It seems like the Entity emits some kind of black "ink" that makes people sick once you touch it. It also seems like the WHRT knows about this too! Going into great lengths to order everyone to wear gloves.
Writing on sticky note atop vinyl glove box reads: Put on gloves before handling ANY art. Call me if we run out!
Not to mention that think ink also seems to effect anyone psychologically, making them want to discover more about Welcome Home, even if it harms their own health.
In the ABOUT US page:
When I unwrapped the first letter, I felt it. I heard it. Open. Open. Open. I want it out. Iâm going to get it out.
In the STAFF ONLY page:
Everything is so disgusting to touch. Sometimes the mail doesn't come for weeks. I want to rip into everything I have. My head feels so muddled too. Ever since I opened the envelope.
I keep getting phone calls, now. Or at least, I assume that's what's happening. I keep hearing it ringing. All day, sometimes. I check my phone and there's no new messages. I thought maybe some of the site staff were pranking me, but I tore up the workspace and couldn't find another phone that might be ringing. All that was there were the toys for the exhibit, and obviously those couldn't be ringing. But I kept hearing it anyway. The phone ringing and ringing... ...I keep digging and digging. I've poured over every recovery the WHRP has given me access to, every inch of their website, and the things I find make less and less sense. If I didn't know better I'd say everyone was coming together to pull an elaborate prank on me. I can still hear the phone ringing now. I don't know how to answer the phone. I need to answer the phone.
The NEWS PAGE also mentions ringing! (This could be the same person who has been affected by the ringing)
So many guest signatures⌠So many of them are trying to communicate. What are you telling me for? Do you think I can answer? What are you trying to do to me? Iâm closing that guest book, Iâm not playing this game anymore. The ringing is enough.
And even affecting them physically as well!
NEWS PAGE
What is it, I hear you pleading! Clawing at your screens just as we have! Coughing, headaches, nausea- I know. I know. It will take a lot of cleaning, preparation, and polishing on our part, but it is a worthwhile labor of love.
Coughing, headaches, nausea.... The Restoration Team is growing sick, yet they are completely obsessed with restoring more evidence for Welcome Home.
They even know that they are growing sick, they wear gloves, they clean, they prepare, they polish the artwork over and over and warn anyone NOT to touch the ink, but it's not enough. They need to restore Welcome Home, even at the cost of their own health.
Heck, the entire page (and studio) is literally dowsed with black ink!
And it seems to be growing too...
Theres more stuff on the walls I keep hearing phones ring.
"More stuff" as if he's surprised, as if there were less ink on the walls than before. And he keeps hearing phones ringing... Its growing...
And it made its way into the real world....
EVIDENCE 2: SALLY'S HORROR STORY!
Ah yes! Some evidence from the Halloween Update! This time, from Sally Starletâs Macabre Menagerie of Monstrous Mischief Making! Specifically, I want to analyze the "noticeable gap" in the audio, the only part where the WHRT did NOT transcript. (This was written by yours truly btw!)
SALLY: What?! No, no, and no! âŚIt is because this town is rumored to have visitors at night⌠Something from deep within the forest, far beyond the hills and mountains⌠No one knows what it wants or where itâs going, just that it is persistent⌠Just that it arrives here. So many stories have risen about their origins⌠But I know what it is searching for. It is looking for neighbors who have stayed past the daytime, to gobble them up whole. That is why so few live here. It moved through the streets at night, but it doesn't break into homes. However, on rare instances, it will find itself with an appetite leftâŚ. unsatisfied by its aimless wandering. Even the occasional unfortunate insect that has crossed its path is not enough⌠Those who have lived through the night say it isn't quiet about it either. They always say you can hear when it gets closer to you. Do you know what sound it makes? I hear it. Every. Night. You can hear it too, if you listen. Especially if you wait next to your window. First, theres rustling in the bushes. Then, A scratching on the pavement and the walls as it crawls up. Finally, if you're quiet, you can hear its guttural soundâŚ
Now, I know what you're asking. Why even bring up this little story at all? What does this story have to do with the Entity?
Context, my dear viewer. If you listen closely, the audio is too clear. No static, no nothing. This segment is also the only part where it didn't get transcripted because it was "inaudible". Which is strange, because you and me and you and that guy and me can hear it just fine! And THAT is why it got me theory senses tingling.
Plus, the story is about a monster too! Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
So let's analyze!
"âŚIt is because this town is rumored to have visitors at night⌠Something from deep within the forest, far beyond the hills and mountains⌠No one knows what it wants or where itâs going, just that it is persistent⌠Just that it arrives here."
This could be talking about the Entity. We don't know what exactly the Entity wants, just that it looks like it's determined to reach a goal that we don't know much about.
"It is looking for neighbors who have stayed past the daytime, to gobble them up whole. That is why so few live here."
It feels like this is talking about the portal-like properties the Entity has. "Gobbling" up neighbors whole and sending them to another dimension, ours.
Sally also states "That is why so few live here", which makes me question how many neighbors used to live here before. Perhaps Julie's siblings, Howdy's family, Barnaby's mom? Were they sent to another dimension? Where are they now????
Not only that, but Sally makes it clear that it goes after neighbors at nighttime. And what time does Welcome Home usually update? 7 PM (*Now, this time could be different because of timezones, but the updates usually happen during the night)
"It moved through the streets at night, but it doesn't break into homes. However, on rare instances, it will find itself with an appetite leftâŚ. unsatisfied by its aimless wandering..."
"First, theres rustling in the bushes. Then, A scratching on the pavement and the walls as it crawls up. Finally, if you're quiet, you can hear its guttural soundâŚ"
I think Sally is giving us an EXACT description on how the Entity managed to break into Home.
1st, theres rustling in the bushes. Home does have bushes surrounding him.
Then, a scratching on the pavement and walls as it crawls up. The Entity could've broken into Home by either climbing through the window or through the roof.
Finally, a guttural sound. Now... where did I hear a guttural sound in Welcome Home before.... Oh yeah! Wally. <- Click this handy-dandy clip and you can hear something quite monstrous right below Wally's voice!
"Wait a minute.... Did you say Wally has a guttural voice???"
I did, dear reader. I did.... Which brings me to my next point:
EVIDENCE 3: POSSESSION AND PUPPETEERING!
Throughout our inspection of the Welcome Home website, we've seen countless times of Wally becoming more and more distressed as each update comes out.
But we've also seen a lot of inconsistencies regarding our lil' Darling! In fact, I even compiled these into a theory in which there could be 2 people hacking into the website!
And while that I still do believe there are more than 2 people hacking into the website... I don't think the Question Answerer is the one doodling. He's still hacking onto the website, but unlike Wally, he writes it out.
The last piece of evidence just proves its the same guy writing this! The Question Answerer!
I want to rip into everything I have. My head feels so muddled too. Ever since I opened the envelope. (see above)
Ok but if the Question Answerer isn't the other guy doodling... then who is making all of the inconsistent doodles??
Why, the ENTITY!
Not only are the doodles inconsistent, but even the sound of Wally's voice sound... quite off if you compare enough audios.
For example! Compare the interview audio with the newest Happy Haunting audio, do you notice anything peculiar about Wally's voice? Especially in the Happy Haunting audio? (If you have trouble finding it, compare these few timestamps below)
4:08
4:51
8:45
13:39-15:29
It sounds... off. Robotic even! It's slow, and the articulation is way different from the interview audio. In the interview audio, you can hear how happy Wally sounds! Even in this audio (and this one too), you can hear Wally growing increasingly frustrated. Yes, its still monotone, but you could hear emotion!
But the Happy Haunting audio, it's neutral. Yes, it IS monotone, but it feels like someone doing an impersonation of Wally rather than Wally actually speaking himself. In fact, the audio reminds me of the phone audio right here. It has the same pauses and neutral tone, save for the very audible growl right underneath Wally's voice.
But speaking of the phone audio.... Did you catch that?
...Do you know who I am? [The heart beat and ambience resume.] [Gasp.] Oh no. Well thatâs not neighborly at all. Weâve never met before. But donât worry. Even though you and I havenât spoken before, Iâve seen you... Every time you have looked into my eyes. I want to know⌠What did you see? [Silence.] I hope you saw a friend, but Iâm not sure you saw a name... Stand still. Letâs start over. Ring ring ring. Click. Hi, Iâm Wally. Iâm so happy to finally meet you, I think youâre the absolute most.
...That's strange, isn't it? We definitely HAVE met Wally, not formally, but we do know about him (this fandom is proof of that!) So how come Wally is saying that we haven't?
Especially when in another audio, he says that we DO 'know him'.
âŚWhy wonât you answer me, neighbor. Why canât I hear you. You know me. You do. Please open. Let me in.
Contradictory, isn't it? We can't both know Wally and NOT know Wally at the same time. That's impossible....
Unless the phone audio Wally isn't our Wally... its the Entity.
Technically, we DON'T know about the Entity. It's not a character in Welcome Home and the things that we do know about it are just mere theories and speculations. It is our 'first' formal meeting with it.
Then why did it introduce itself as Wally? WELL BECAUSE ITS POSSESSING HIM! It's trying to convince us that it is Wally, using his signature catchphrase and even saying 'I hope you saw a friend'. Besides, if you were a weird portal monster, I doubt you would introduce yourself as one if you wanted to trick someone.
And if this possession theory does turn out to be true, it does explain the major inconsistencies happening in the website! Such as the doodles!
The Hearts!
THE HANDWRITING
THATS NOT WALLY'S HANDWRITING! He writes in CAPITAL LETTERS and in RED (not all lowercase and in blue!).
WALLY CAN'T DRAW HEARTS SO WHO'S DRAWING EM???
AND BOTH OF THOSE BARNABY DRAWINGS SURE DO LOOK INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. ALMOST AS IF SOMEONE WITH LITTLE DRAWING EXPERIENCE DID IT.
But if you still need a bit more proof to convince ya, here's some more!
W a L L y: You won't write back Wally: You're looking for me. Silly. Silly.
I think W a L L y is our Wally! He's getting desperate, but he knows that we won't be able to write back. Wally on the other hand is the Entity, it knows that we are looking for the main big bad antagonist, and it knows. It even mocks us.
And I think we've seen evidence of these possessions before. Look at none other than the bug audios!
In every single one of these bug audios, we are in the perspective of Wally himself. But in these bug audios, Wally doesn't say anything at all. Rather, he sits unmoving, listening into the conversation whether he has been invited there or not!
In this bug audio, Wally has been listening in on Sally and Howdy's conversation the entire time!
But thats not all! All of these bug audios are connected according to the conversation between Barnaby and Home! Which means that all of these bug audios are happening on the same day at a very short period of time, which is concerning on just how frequent Wally appears to be disassociating. Or if that's even Wally at all!
If that is the Entity controlling Wally, it feels like he's observing them, studying them. Perhaps that's why the audios always cut out whenever a neighbor says Wally's name, it snaps him out of that trance and reminds him that he is in fact the real Wally!
Which brings us to our latest bug audio (and by far the most worrying one), the Candy Spider! The Halloween Bug?? Idk it's this one <-
We've just gotten proof of Wally munching on an apple. This would've been fine and dandy in any other situation, but remember viewer! Context matters! Especially if we put into consideration that that is not Wally.
BARNABY: âEy, howâs my little devil doinâ over âere? You guardinâ my apple for me, pal? [There is a brief pause. What is he doing.] BARNABY: Ohâ heh, I guess ya didnât do a very good job at it. [Barnaby calls out to the room] Hey! Who took a bite outta my apple? I think I see some fang marks, Frank!
Yeah that SURE is definitely not worrying. Nope, none whatsoever!
Oh boy... I think that's everything. Well, not everything everything. I still don't think the Entity is the only bad guy, just the main one! The Playfellow Workshop is very suspicious, and while I do believe Wally and Home are most likely victims of everything that is going on, I don't think I should say that they are quite innocent yet.
In the banner, they are the only two NOT separated by hearts! It seems to me that they are working together to give out more evidence to the WHRT.
And Marlo... another company that is VERY suspicious. What did their logo look like again?
A house logo with an eye in the middle.... Why does that look so familiar?
AH.
Well that's clearly not suspicious!

JWCT: How I think the love triangle will go down: Kenlynn endgame, Dinostar friendship restored.
So, as I teased in a post I donât remember how long ago, Iâm going to explain my theory on what I think the writers are planning to do with Kenji, Brooklynn and Darius, and what led me to think that. I donât claim to know whatâs going through their heads, Iâm only a girl who loves to write and who has taken classes on the process of film-making, narratology and cinematic analysisâŚand also the biggest Kenlynn shipper, so even though I try to be the least biased possible, it will probably still shine through, Iâm human. Oh, and thatâs only a theory of course, chances are Iâm wrong. It goes without saying, but I had a blast writing this, I love to dissect the stories I love to find meaning in it.
I split my thought process in different parts, so pick and choose what you're interested in reading, I know that's freaking long, but I can't help it, I LOVE TO ANALYZE EVERYTHING OK (especially fiction).
(also don't mind the typos there are a lot of atrocious ones but it was too long to check correctly)
Dinostar is (too much of) a mess:
2: They could have killed Kenlynn, but chose not to:
3: They're putting a suscpisiously large amount of effort into Kenlynn
4: Dariusâs arc with Brooklynn is not about romance:
5: Brooklynn was in the wrong: she had everything
6: Kenji has suffered enough:
7: The way she looked at Darius (plane scene):
8: An example of what could happen (purely going off of vibes):
#it's probably filled with typos but anyway#probably will be my last long rant until season 3 comes out#i can't wait to see what season 3 has in store for us#I hope they'll follow through on what they have set up#i think my literature degree had too big of an impact on me#now I can't help but search for meaning in every piece of media#if you made it to that far you deserve a cookie#jwct#chaos theory#camp cretaceous#jwcc#kenji kon#brooklynn#darius bowman#yasmina fadoula#ben pincus#sammy gutierrez#brooklynn jwct#jwct s2#jurassic world#dinostar#jurassic park#dreamworks#netflix

đđđđđ đŞâđđ˝đđś
(the character overlook)
âĄâË đŚ˘ăťââ§ââË・â
these are all my opinions, totally open to the conversation about mollyâs character also totally fine with people fact checking me, anyways iâm starting to fw oâshones
in the words of @krayzie-jelli the autism is autisming (donât cancel me i have referrals to get tested đđ)
âĄâË đŚ˘ăťââ§ââË・â
small credit;
the red dead fan wiki
@/reaperqween on tik tok (for the almost ten minute tik tok about mollys outfits which i ate up)
^ her tumblr is @river-of-wine send some love yall want đ
colour analysis & general observations
đŞđđđšđ°
colour theory is heavily used based on honor, the best example of this is dutch, he consistently wearing red, mostly on his back until guarma when the red is on the front, when dutchâs true intentions become more apparent, anyways onto molly.
đŠ°đââ
Ëâŕ¨ŕ§
COLTER
(i went quite quick through colter so im actually unsure how she is with dutch, but from what i remember she doted on him a whole ton, constantly staying at his side and at one point saying âdutch is all the company i needâ)
đthough a lot of people relate the red in different characters with low honor i think the fabric, the pattern itself points back to her privileged past
đthe necks scarf being green, i feel like it doesnât imply much at this point but as the game continues it implies way more
đthe rest of the outfit being blue means a lot to me, thereâs never anytime molly oversteps or is aggressive to anyone (obviously except from the obvious with karen, iâll go back to this later)
điâd like to note that sheâs still doing her makeup freezing and starving in the mountains
đŠ°đââ
Ëâŕ¨ŕ§
HORSESHOE OUTLOOK & CLEMENTS POINT
(i honestly will end up mixing these up so i grouped them together)
(tbh my honest opinion is horseshoe is one of the best chapters based on the relationships in camp (tho sadieâs still going through it, you canât have everything))
đher first outfit has a good amount of blue in this outfit, her necklace has its first appearance with the red (i always got the vibe that dutch had gifted it to her as itâs more shiny than a lot of the metal in her outfits and itâs like a part of him)
đshe wears a thick belt with this outfit and the brass (?) seems worn, even coming from a wealthy background she holds onto clothes that look old and worn
đshe always wears white boots, sheâs doesnât have to do any work, and sheâs not expected to do anything
đthe majority of the mornings in game, molly is constantly checking herself in a mirror
điâm going to be honest i hate this shirt
đbut iâd like to think this shawl has always been with her and that she holds it close to her
đher outfit is quite shapeless, and i think thatâs how she liked to dress personally
đi would love to talk about this outfit
đdoes this eat? yes, but i donât think this was a honest choice for her
đthis outfit mirror mary-bethâs a lot, who seems to be dutchâs new interest
sorry for the bad quality i used my own screenshot for this
đthis outfit particularly ^
đthereâs now a lot of cleavage in her outfit and sheâs dressing more akin to other girls in the camp
đand the gold in her outfits bright, and with mirroring marybeth, I also think this mirrors dutchâs style, with more red and gold incorporated
đŠ°đââ
Ëâŕ¨ŕ§
đher relationship with dutch is starting to crumble, i heard a voice line where she says that she loves him and he thanks her (?!) you wouldnât see me again personally
đbut to contrast that thereâs some scenes were dutch kisses her hands and theyâre all giddy and cuddly, and they eventually dance when seanâs rescued from blackwater
đsheâs also not well received by a lot of the gang, we get the first glimpse of that when you take mary-beth, tilly and karen to valentiene and karen says that mollyâs âtoo high and mightyâ to come with them
đshe attempts a to interact with numerous members
đshe also attempts to talk to tilly, tilly quickly brushes her off as sheâs working and molly isnât attempting to help her
đi also saw an encounter with dutch and molly where, he approaches, and honestly he could be covered in shit and molly would still look up to him like heâs a messiah. dutch says âshould i compare thee toâŚâ he quickly cuts himself off asking her what he should compare her with, even asking arthur if you pass by (he actually says that dutch could compare her to an idiot if she actually believes dutch cares about her)
đ throughout clements point, dutch talks down to molly as if sheâs a child and then will quickly back himself up by calling her dear (to which if arthur intervenes when she goes off at him, dutch says sheâs just leaving and sheâs stomps away)
đwhen she approaches abigail about the subject of dutch, abigail tells her âdutch donât love you, not in the way you want to be lovedâ, molly gets defensive saying that she doesnât get what sheâs talking about, to which abigail says she does (implying drunk john?) and molly stomps away
đi think this is the first time molly actually goes a bit crazy about dutch, she calls him a degenerate liar and stomps off when dutch wont argue back and (i think) goes to sleep, he at least turns away from her
đi think people who discredit mollys character (men) donât realise that her and dutchâs relationship show early signs about how manipulative dutch can be, he dumbs down what she says then calls her dear, eventually he only calls her miss oâshea, which she obviously goes off at him for
đadding onto this iâd love to talk about her character item request of a pocket mirror and her asking arthur if bad lucks a thing, i feel like this is meant to reflect how young she actually is, like how kieran still referred to his parents as ma and pa, and that she genuinely seems nervous asking arthur for a mirror and the superstition of a broken mirror giving bad luck (which i guess you could say she had
đand i feel like her vanity that the gang and from an outsiders perspective that sheâs self absorbed but i think sheâs more conscious about how she looks, she doesnât have to lift a finger and not having much to do around camp because everyone distances themselves from her (iâll obviously elaborate more when i get to writing about shady bell) i think sheâs left alone with a mirror, which i feel is more implied that sheâs had for a long time, iâd say since childhood, you become more conscious the more you look at yourself and if your man seemed to be going for someone younger than you, youâd loose it too
(tl:dr - molly doesnât deserve any hate, the girls that get it, get it, men donât, im so ready to talk about chapter 4&6)
The poem
-
Uaibhreach
(the irish gaelic word which means âbeing proud and arrogant to the extent that it alienates & isolates you from those around you, leading to loneliness)
I was a girl - until your call
(iâm not going to annotate this everytime but the religion of this actually makes me feel like my hearts being ripped out)
Commanded me to cross the sea.
(she was driven out of ireland looking for freedom and adventure and she was enthralled by dutchâs charm, to be honest i always saw her âprivileged upbringingâ being her family owning a big farm, or in a big industry, a lot of irish people immigrated to canada after the potato famine, then crossed to america)
I've nothing left. I gave you all.
(i think she means this in, like, every sense)
My darling Liffey was so small.
Your land and love are vast and free.
(âMERICA)
I was a girl until your call.
You stood so strong, and dark and tall.
You stole the heartbeat out of me.
I've nothing left. I gave you all.
Your lips enchant, your eyes enthrall,
Your empire is of ecstasy.
I was a girl until your call.
Your parasites and lackeys crawl,
(now do i think this is the gang or her fault that they donât like her, i think its a mutual thing, they see her as a spoiled woman and she doesnât help that opinion but i think sheâs a young woman manipulated by an older guy, and that she thinks theyâre all just jealous (which im sure she even says a few times)
Mocking a love they dare not see.
(going back to when she tryâs to seek abigailâs help, or when she confronts karen later on and that she canât see that heâs really not interested in her)
I've nothing left. I gave you all.
I sit in solitude and scrawl
These wretched words, and wait for thee.
I was a girl until your call.
I've nothing left. I gave you all.

THE MEANING OF NAMES IN THE EPIC: PART 1. ANTINOUS.
part 2 part 3
Okay, I'll admit honestly - I'm not a master say "Hello!" to the public and how to start something, so I'll try to start each post with.... RAR, as a sign of greeting, joy that someone reads the posts and so on down the list :D so... RAR!
There will be a separate post on the topic of who I am and what kind of dirt I am made of, and that you can expect from me (stock up on holy water, only my co-author - @gareleia HIIII !!!!! - can hold me back, and even then not always), but for now..... A BIG ANALYSIS AND THEORY ABOUT THE MEANING OF NAMES IN EPIC and the newest find on my list is Antinous (God, how villainous he turned out to be in the new saga aaaa ). I will say right away that I AM NOT CLAIMING THAT THE INFORMATION CAN BE 100% CORRECT, BECAUSE THE INTERNET IS A DECEPTIVE THING, (and I didnât have time to get to the library to check everything with the help of my favorite books ) This is just a theory(?), and even if it turns out to be wrong, I am happy that I was able to find something like this and it was definitely not a waste of time checking many sites and reading different articles. Let's start with the fact that the most common meaning that I came across is to divide the name "Antinous" into two logical parts, so that it turns out "áźÎ˝ĎÎŻ" and "νĎÎżĎ" and if these two parts are combined in Greek, then we get "áźÎ˝ĎίνοοĎ" - unrequited feelings; contrary to perception, cause these parts mean "against, hostile" and "feelings, perception" in one version of the third-party Wikipedia. BUT, if we look further, start digging deeper, we will find very VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION! "νĎÎżĎ" means mind, thought, plan and "áźÎ˝ĎÎŻ" means - to plan, to achieve, strive and... if you put it together, you get...(or it means one part, sorry, I got confused in the chaotic notes and messages to the co-author) ....hold down. YES, IT DOES LOOK LIKE THIS! ONE OF THE MOST-MOST UNPOPULAR MEANINGS OF "HOLD DOWN". AND THIS WAS JUST A PREPARATION FOR THEORY! The theory itself is based on a logical question, which you, the reader, probably understood - what if Jorge drew inspiration for the song "Hold them down" precisely from such a secret, almost unknown name meaning of the one who is the main character of the song? ( I'm sure that this is quite possible, as is my co-author, CAUSE JORGE LOVES SUCH UNEXPECTED AND UNOBVIOUS TRICKS) Yes, this is the theory that came to me from a random yet another interest to find out what the name of such a character as Antinous means. I also have a couple of extremely interesting notes about the meaning of names and other characters, and if you are interested, then I will be very happy to share these notes in this blog, in addition to the following notes, in which I finally want to join my co-author's discussion of our AU's

Updated intro post and masterlist time!
Hello! I'm 1moreff-creator, or just FF, and I'm your

This is a technically multifandom (but generally DRDT-centric) blog, where I mostly do analysis posts and theories, though there's some variety around here. I go by they/them, I'm aro/ace, and I have a sideblog dedicated to the Milgram project, 1moremilgram-enjoyer!
Here's my post masterlist, which I moved away from Tumblr to avoid the 100 link per post limit I was going to run into eventually. Interests and post highlight reel under the cut.

(AKA everything you're welcome to flood my askbox with :D)
-DRDT. Obviously.
-Mainline Danganronpa, DRA and SDRA2, Project: Eden's Garden, DR (He)artless Deceit.
-Milgram. Though you should probably go to the sideblog for that :p
-FNAF. This thing grabbed hold of me in 2014 and will not let go. Probable cause of my likely insanity, given I'm well-versed in the lore.
-BNHA. The hundreds of thousands of words I've written for class 1-B are the reason for the "fanfic" the "ff" stands for in my name :)
Smaller interests also include Slay the Princess, JJK, Class of 09 (mainly OG and Re-Up I don't really like Flipside), Undertale/Deltarune, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe (haven't thought about this one in a while though), and more I'm probably forgetting.
Post Highlight Reel:
-DRDT Secret Masterpost. Generally a good idea to check this out before any of my more unhinged thoughts.
-DRDT CH2 PT Analysis. Probably my best post ever, 28k words of mental illness.
-Mai Akasaki Analysis. Really love this one. I consider it a great introduction to Mai's character, and contains some theories I love a lot.
Amendments: Arrow in her numeral (ft cider-est) (Rb) - Matching phone charms (ft wist-eri) (Rb) - Mai flower discovery by the-fox-in-the-socks (0% my post but pretty important)
-Literature Girl Insane Analysis Video. Two and a half hours of sheer insanity, though reading the Mai post first is recommended.
Amendments: Post CH2 PT2 Update (Corrigendum).
-About Page Text Analysis. (Ask). Shorter than the others, but I think it's important enough to be listed here.
Update: where did it go.
-DRDT reacts to "I fucked your mom last night." Behold, my most popular post ever.
-Eden!Culprit Levi!Accomplice Theory. Although this was proven wrong, I'm still pretty proud of it and consider it a good theory for the time.
-Proving MonoTVid canon with LGI. Objectively the best post I've ever made.
Recommended Reads
Smaller theories I still recommend you read, especially if you want a full understanding of my beliefs when it comes to DRDT.
-Thoughts on Min's secret. (Pre-CH2 PT2 Ask) A bit of Min analysis, and a basic theory on how exactly she pulled off her motive secret.
-"Mai Order" Analysis and observations on the CH2 PT1 QnA. (Rb) This one's just funny.
-Survivor Predictions. (Ask) Self-explanatory.
-Thoughts on Terukoâs plan to end the killing game. (Pre-CH2 Ep16 Ask) Holy shit I kinda got something right???
-The Deal with Whit, according to me. (Rb) I just like how this analysis came out :v

Hey, I reaaally love all your meta analysis, especially the one on Aziraphale's morality. You truely have a wonderful writing style! And you expressed the feelings I had about the S2 finale I couldn't put into words and had me in tears again. I never really believed in the coffee theory (although a part of me hoped for it since it would be way less painful). But there is one thing I can't wrap my head around. The coffee theory is partly supported by the final scene of Aziraphale in the elevator and his creepy smile. Even when he looks forward to his new position and is convinced he does the right thing, I can't believe he wouldn't smile like that (and Michael Sheen is to talented for it being am accident). He still lost his soulmate Crowley, he still had to give up the life he loved so dearly and we know how much he struggled with that in the first place talking to Metatron. So why this smile, which aside from that, really did not look like him? I fear, that his memories were wiped out in this elevator. But since you have so a great understanding of Aziraphale's character, I would like to know your theories about that? Thanks a lot!!
(In response to my meta on why Aziraphale had to go to Heaven)
Thank you so much for your kind words, @sabotage-on-mercury (truly means the world to me). Honestly, the creepy smile was one part of the ending I couldn't quite put my finger on either, until someone pointed out on a Twitter response to my meta:
The reason why its scary is bc azi is becoming properly angry at the system and is 101% determined to set things right (Source)
In season 1, Aziraphale was determined not to kill anyone to stop the Apocalypse. He wouldn't even tell Crowley where the Antichrist was, because Crowley's only solution was to kill him.
And because Crowley consistently didn't have any ideas ("not one single better idea??"), Aziraphale took it on himself to pursue the only option leftââto ask God to intervene and stop both Heaven and Hell from destroying Earth. Therefore, Aziraphale had to keep the integrity of his angel status by distancing himself from Crowley, while the world was still in danger.
Despite this dedication avoid bloodshed, when God didn't have an answer, Aziraphale went against one of his core beliefs to help save the world. He was willing to murder a child.
For Aziraphale, that takes guts. And (seeing how he reacted at the end of the Job minisode), I wonder that if he had killed Adam Young, Aziraphale would have checked himself into Hell.
Going to Heaven for Aziraphale is ultimately a conscious choice, one that he is clearly afraid of. We see him constantly steeling himself again the Metatron in the end, covering his fear and hurt from losing Crowley with a placid smile and a flippant attitude. He's wearing so many masks, to Crowley, to himself, to the Metatron...
All season we've seen him playing roles (detective, magician, doctor, landlord). But the final role is warrior. Going up that elevator, we first see Aziraphale's eyes searching, worried, panicking, but unable to show it because he's not in a safe space. He swallows, blinks, he's breathing hard (you can see his entire shoulders rise and fall).
But as he goes up, his expression steels. He's quite literally putting on a mask (to himself): a vengeful, hardened expression of pure anger and rage (to drown out the fear and uncertainty he so clearly still has).
Michael Sheen conveying contained anger in both Good Omens and Masters of Sex (gif by @julielilac)
Cuz this isn't just him scrambling to kill a kid, this is him walking calmly and knowingly into sacrificing everything he loves most (Crowley, the bookshop, his entire life on earth) to create a world that will always be safe for him and Crowley and humanity for the rest of time. Where he would have to go up against the most powerful angels, the Metatron, and God Themself to change things. He can't be the kind, sweet angel he was on Earth. That won't cut it in Heaven if he wants to make a difference in any real way.
He wanted to do it with Crowley, with the love and support and strength of his demon. But without him, Aziraphale has to channel something else to keep his resolve afloat.
Something he had when he was a warrior, fighting on the front lines of a battle between Heaven and Hell, when he very likely led a platoon into divine fields of bloodshed before the earth was born. When he was an avenging angel.
I havenât done this since the Great War.
It was a time and an identity he had chosen to leave behind, because it wasn't the kind of angel he was anymore ("I'm not fighting in any war!"). In this context, you can read Aziraphale's passionate unwillingness to take a life (his pacifism) directly into his past experience as a warrior. It is often the veterans of terrible wars who are the most earnest advocates for peace. (And especially in Britain and Europe, where the violence of the world wars is still such a powerful and painful national memory.)
As he goes up the elevator, he's breathing so hard we can hear it mirrored in the soundtrack, and he is so hyperfocused on steeling himself that he doesn't even care that the Metatron is watching him. He doesn't rest until he's psyched himself into that warrior mindset necessary to carry out this mission entirely by himself, to be both the moral advocate and the uncompromising leader of angels who had intimidated him his entire life. To demand respect and to talk to the very face of God and tell Them they are Wrong.
(Please read this Neil-approved meta for further thoughts on God and Aziraphale.)
That creepy smile is clearly not there because Aziraphale is happy to fall into a toxic parent's false love. There's no comfort or wistful nostalgia in that face. There's no "it'll be so much nicer" in that smile. It's not a happy smile. It's an I'm-gonna-fuck-shit-up smile.
Because it's a warrior's smile before they go into battle, before they put on that armor and, for a while, become something they're not in the name of some greater good. He's fucking furious and it's downright frightening.
Because I have no doubt that the angel Aziraphale we get in Season 3 is the angel Aziraphale who can say this:
He's not there yet in the TV show. But this bravery, this anger, this flaming rage is how it starts.
Or as he's described in the book when Aziraphale mysteriously does away with the local mafia:
Just because youâre an angel doesnât mean you have to be a fool.

đ The King - An Analysis â¨
I've already stated my love for the Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack in a previous post, and in case it wasn't already obvious from my ambience edits, "The King" - essentially, King Baldwin's theme - is one of my favorite tracks on the OST album (if you're curious, "Burning the Past", "Crusaders", "To Jerusalem", and "Ibelin" are my other faves); it so effectively encapsulates his character with several simple variations on a single melody, on top of just being a lovely piece to listen to. What follows is my amateur analysis of this track (fully enabled by @atomnolly - please go check out their art, they're amazing). Please note, however, that I have absolutely zero experience with musical composition and theory. I'm just going by what the piece invokes in me, as a listener, in relation to Baldwin's character in the film.
I'll primarily be analyzing the OST's version of the track, which brings me to my main gripe about the way this piece is presented in the film and one reason why I'm doing this analysis to begin with: there's actually two variants floating out there - the basic OST album version and the Complete/"Full Expanded" album version, the latter of which is how it was implemented in the movie. Unfortunately, in the film, you never get to hear "The King" as its own full track like you do with "Burning the Past", for example. Instead, it's spliced up over the course of several scenes, one of which has nothing to do with Baldwin himself. đ
Go figure.
Because of this, I'm using the full "suite" version from the OST (called the "Album Edit" on the complete soundtrack) as, oddly enough, it is far more coherent to listen to than how it actually shows up in the film. More on that later.
youtube
The suite opens up with an intro that is called "Golgotha" on the complete soundtrack (unfortunately, Tumblr isn't letting me upload my audio clips no matter what I do, so we'll go by timestamps instead - I highly advise docking the video in your sidebar while you read for convenience). Between 0:00 and 1:20, we get this soft, meandering, mysterious melody on duduk, accompanied by equally mysterious female vocals that briefly drift into a brighter, almost angelic sound. This change in tone is backed by what sounds like a glass harp before the duduk repeats the initial melody.
I've noticed that the "tinkling" glass harp often shows up in the film to seemingly emphasize something ethereal or supernatural, and we mostly hear it in connection to Baldwin, although it does spring up in other places on occasion. Each time it's used, it invokes the slightest bit of tension, as if it's a cue to think more closely about whatever it is the viewer is looking at.
Even more intrinsically tied to his character, however, is the presence of the Armenian duduk, which, if I haven't missed anything anywhere (which I could have), doesn't appear in any track other than those clearly associated with the king. In this way, I think we can effectively say that, as far as the KoH soundtrack goes, the duduk is "his" instrument - fitting, considering his Armenian heritage.
As a side note, this is why it's strange and somewhat frustrating to me to have this intro segment tacked onto Balian's visit at Calvary in the film, because, after hearing it as part of "The King" suite on the album edit, it's obvious that the duduk signals Baldwin's presence. Yet at this point, the king hasn't even been introduced and won't be for a few more scenes. I do believe it replays in full after Balian's invitation to speak with Baldwin, but it is almost completely overshadowed by his conversation with Sibylla, leading the viewer to possibly attach it to her rather than her brother.
Back to the duduk. The Armenian duduk, a double-reed instrument traditionally made of apricot wood, has a very distinctive sound that's been described by listeners as everything from mournful, lonely, and haunting, to relaxing and soulful, to majestic and even romantic, depending on how it is played. This powerful versatility is certainly demonstrated in "The King", beginning with this introduction that I would say ventures into "haunting" territory. In fact, it almost feels like a lure - a siren's call for listeners.
After that call, we get the beginning of what is "The King" on the Extended soundtrack and the first appearance of the leitmotif that is attached to Baldwin from that point forth. Between 1:20 and 1:50 on the album edit, we have a very "gentle" (as @atomnolly put it đ) melody played on a flute, first heard when Baldwin is beckoning Balian to come closer, again accompanied by the glass harp. While starting at a lilting higher pitch, it soon trails off into a lower one before a slight pause, and then a slide of strings precedes a repetition of that same melody at a lower pitch than the first. A solemn tension builds from then until 2:24, at which point, in the Complete soundtrack, it is very obviously and awkwardly chopped to silence. đWe'll get back to that in a bit.
This introduction of Baldwin's leitmotif is a very interesting point of the suite, because the almost light airiness of the flute doesn't last very long. It soon gives way to a much richer, even "darker" sound. For me, this represents what belies the almost angelic appearance of the king - there's far more depth there than his friendly introduction might suggest, and this is reflected in the music itself... brightness intertwined with mystery, and possibly a little danger (this is a king we're talking about, here, with all the power that position provides).
This mystery is further emphasized when the duduk comes back in, echoing the leitmotif between 2:25 and 2:50, and it is further strengthened by the dual presence of the glass harp and growing strings supporting it. Unfortunately, this part doesn't show up at all during Balian's first conversation with Baldwin; in fact, it is put off until the middle of "Terms" on the complete soundtrack: the discussion with Saladin at Kerak. IMO, it would have been far more fitting to have it in the background during the most serious part of Baldwin's lecture (a la my first atmosphere edit); this is really the second-strongest iteration of his leitmotif and should have accompanied his most powerful quote in the film.
What comes after is the closest thing we get to a battle theme for Baldwin. From 2:50 to 3:06 we get another repetition of the leitmotif by the duduk, but in its strongest form: at a higher pitch but with greater power than before, it is accompanied by drums and backed by strings that give a sense of urgency. This is the king on horseback, both right before the meeting with Saladin and immediately following. Utterly gone is the glass harp - mystery gives way to majesty.
The leitmotif then continues with even stronger strings alongside the duduk at a lower pitch from 3:07, almost overpowering it, before being repeated a final time by horns at 3:22. This, I believe, is essentially a royal fanfare of sorts; brass has been associated with military and nobility (as the ultimate leadership of said military) since ancient times, and it is here that the score emphasizes Baldwin's role as commander of his kingdom's army. Again, unfortunately, this part isn't kept singular to Baldwin and is replayed in the future scenes of Balian's battle at Jerusalem - it's possible this is intended to evoke the memory of Baldwin, but it further takes away from the composition's uniqueness.
At 3:37, then, we get a small "falling action" portion that actually doesn't appear where it was intended. According to Drake55116's analysis, this particular bit was actually supposed to play while Baldwin dismounted his horse and approached Raynald in Kerak's courtyard, but was ultimately cut. I'm not sure why - it has a definite sense of "impending doom" to it, not just for Raynald, but for Baldwin himself, as this becomes his last great "hurrah" as king. Both the string and horn buildups are wonderful and really emphasize it as the climax point before the disaster that follows.
After that, interestingly enough, the portion that appears at 4:17 on the album edit is actually put where the leitmotif chops off suddenly during Baldwin's earlier conversation with Balian on the Extended soundtrack. To be honest, I think it would have served just fine during or even after Baldwin's interaction with Raynald instead. The slide of the low strings and the slightly discordant horns continue that regal majesty, but also provide appropriate tension for the situation.
Briefly returning to the initial conversation between Baldwin and Balian - there is one portion of the theme that is reserved for the Complete soundtrack and doesn't appear on the OST album edit: at 56:28 there is a unique high string version of the king's leitmotif followed by a slower, half repetition by the duduk, which has had an echo added to it. It essentially serves to "close-out" their conversation after Baldwin gives his orders to go to Ibelin. This iteration is much, much softer in tone, and with the echo and the growing glass harp sound alongside it, it seems to purposefully emphasize the ethereal mystery of the king, but this time with a definite positive tone... perhaps reflective of Balian's hopeful outlook on him?
Back to the album edit. From 4:42, the leitmotif appears again as an even higher flute than it first appeared, almost delicate. A deliberate pause follows with emphasis on the glass harp between 5:06 and 5:15 before the duduk echoes the theme one last time... the softest and slowest it's played on the whole track as it extends to the end. Here, from 4:42 onward, is the dying king. A certain innocence is reflected in the high flute notes, weariness and vulnerability conveyed through the duduk. Despite being the gentlest segment of the suite, it is perhaps the most powerful way to close it out, the prior strength and mystery quite literally fading away into nothing.
In essence, I think "The King" would have been much more effective presented in the movie exactly as it appears as a suite on the OST, going precisely in that order and restricted to Baldwin's appearances alone. As a whole, it perfectly illustrates the king as a character - the flute and glass harp reflecting the angelic elegance, the horns the majesty, the duduk the mystery, power, and tragedy. Harry Gregson-Williams's composition is beautifully-deep despite its relative simplicity, and it adds so much to every scene in which Baldwin appears; thoughtfully-crafted to invoke the above feelings in the audience, it effectively enhances the Leper King's brief but powerful presence in the film.

Hi, just joined Tumblr earlier today as part of an unrelated thing, thought I'd check your page out on a friend's rec, and... wow. Just, wow. This is practically the nine-dimensional chess of media literacy. I would have so many question, but everything you discuss is promptly explained in such great detail that I can't even say that. One question remains, though: *how?* Where do you get the absurd amount information and brainpower required to connect the show's many, many dots at this high of a level? It's something I struggle with myself (though that may be due to there being over a year between watching V1-V8 and seriously starting to reflect on the show beyond "well, that was a fun sequence of events"âthank you, newish fanfic writing brainâbut that's besides the point), and I was wondering if you had any tips for expanding one's thinking in this direction, as the show still means a *lot* to meâthere's a reason, however unexplainable, that I stuck with it so long before the reflections startedâand I'd love it if the deepest parts of my brain could reflect it as such.
...Unless that's too much to ask, in which case, whoops! Either way, thank you.
really fundamentally the most effective thing you can do to practice is make a deliberate effort to cultivate a sense of curiosity toward the text. and what i mean by that is, get in the habit of asking yourself questions as if youâre in a high school english lit class: what happened in this scene? why did this character say or do that? does this conversation remind you of anything that happened in an earlier scene, and if so, whatâs similar? whatâs different? what did you learn about the characters from this scene? what did you learn about the world they live in? why do you think this scene was important enough to be in the story? what changed in this scene (something will always have changed)?
it may feel a bit patronizing at first BUT over time if youâre consistent about it, doing this will train you to approach reading or watching as an active participant. analytical interpretation is a skill and like any skill it takes sustained effort and practice.
after that itâs sort of just pattern recognition. this is true of all stories but itâs especially true of theme-driven stories like rwby because they tend to be very deliberate about repeating and refracting their ideas and often develop rich symbolic vocabularies. so you identify a pattern and then examine the text until you can develop a compelling argument for what it means.
one thing to keep in mind if youâre generally familiar with fandom is that fandom encourages a lot of practices that are cool and fun in fannish contexts but will poison analysis because they are (by nature of being transformative) untethered from the text. headcanon, for example, is things held to be true irrespective of the textâone could have as a headcanon that ruby is allergic to bee stings or that qrow is her father or whatever and it doesnât matter that thereâs no textual evidence or that the text says otherwise because the text is not relevantâbut analytically, you must be able to back every part of your argument with textual evidence. so it is useful to practice compartmentalizing to keep headcanon strictly separated from the text in your mind.
(thatâs also a practice i recommend in general because being able to say âi like this idea and i have it in mind when i create fanworks, but it isnât canonicalâ is healthy)
a good habit to get into is arguing against yourself and holding yourself to a high standard of proof. the reason my argumentation tends to be so thorough is that i try to be as skeptical of my own theories as i am of other peopleâs. if i have an idea that seems right but doesnât withstand textual scrutiny, i discard it. (or i might toss it into the headcanon/au idea pile, if iâm very fond of it.) i will often develop more than one argument about a given subject and then lay them all against the text before i commit to one. being skeptical will push you to pay closer attention.
cultivate curiosity about your own emotional reactions, too. what did this scene make you feel? why? how do you feel about this or that character? what draws you to your favorite characters? what distances you from the characters you donât like? what ideas come to mind when you think about the story and what it means to you? if you have a strong reaction to somethingâgood or badâtry to trace that feeling to its root. what sparked it and why?
once you start digging into that youâll find that your intuitive reactions to the story are non-arbitraryâyouâre subconsciously picking up on certain patterns or themes that resonate with you. so paying attention to what the story makes you feel and asking how and why it incites those feelings will guide you to conscious discovery of things youâve already noticed without noticing.
and another good point of entry is to look for recurring symbols / imageryâfor example, silver-eyes get associated with death and reincarnation through a combination of harvest/reaper imagery (scythe, sickle, âthe grimm reaperâ) and butterflies (rubyâs first glare resembles wings, butterflies everywhere when she and maria discuss her eyes, butterflies symbolizing ascension in the ever after). adding this pattern together with the white light in the liminal void between realms (the threshold of life and death!), the implication that silver-eyes came from ozma (who dies and reincarnates cyclically), the stated purpose of the glare (to preserve and protect life), ruby hearing pyrrhaâs final words in her dreams (which she didnât hear in reality), and the glare having destroyed the hand cinder used to kill pyrrha, is how i got to âsilver-eyes are psychopomps,â because both the symbolism and the narrative facts about the power line up in that direction.
the one thing to be careful with in relation to symbolism is not to treat it like a secret code! symbolic meaning isnât universal so you should always consider symbolism in context with the narrative. the first question should always be âwhat idea does this image appear in connection to, when it appears?â i.e. the burning rose in rwby symbolizes mourning. think of symbols as more like trail markers that the narrative has placed to help you understand the story by connecting dots. we see the burning rose on summerâs grave and then we see it on ruby; she carries her motherâs absence with her. she gives the brooch away in the ever after right after the blacksmith shows her a glimpse of summer, and then in the storm her reflection is summer but ruby doesnât look, doesnât see: sheâs avoiding her grief, trying to pretend it isnât there. and then the brooch returns to her once she faces what the blacksmith wanted to show her about her mom: now itâs a symbol for acceptance of loss.
and with a story like rwby that uses allusion to develop its thematic narrative itâs really helpful to read the texts it alludes to! the core narrative allusions are the marvelous land of oz, maiden in tower fairytales (petrosinella, persinette, rapunzel), cinderella, and the little prince, plus aliceâs adventures in wonderland & through the looking glass for the ever after. and then every major character has a specific character allusion. both kinds of allusion are symbolic/thematic (you canât use allusions to predict specific plot events but they help tie together emotional arcs and character relationships cohesively, and the narrative allusions are pretty good weather vanes for very broad-strokes things like ozmaâs symbolic blindness being âhealedâ in the end).
rewatching the show a couple of times will also help, especially if you take notes. iâm not sure how many times iâve rewatched v1-8 but itâs a lot and iâve watched v9 in full twice, plus rewatching a lot of specific episodes or scenes for reference. rewatching will help you spot patterns that you missed before and increase your familiarity with the text in general, both of which help tremendously.

THE MORNING AFTER: ONLY FRIENDS, EPISODE 3 ("BINGBONG! MUST BE THAT WIRETAP THAT I ORDERED") EDITION
Before I get started on my episode review, I just want to gather some quick thoughts about my observations of yesterday's internet:
1) Tumblr was a lot more subdued than after the first two episodes of Only Friends. Now that I've seen episode 3, it makes a lot of sense: I've noticed that I've gotten myself prepared unconsciously before watching OF much later after everyone else through the streaming vibes on my dash. I even saw some Laws of Attraction gifs before the Only Friends gifs, ha! But there's a lot going on to dig into with OF, and it makes sense why feelings are starting to get complicated over what's happening.
2) The Ephemerality Squad ( @ranchthoughts, @chickenstrangers, @lurkingshan, @slayerkitty, @twig-tea, and honorary shout-out @neuroticbookworm) hit spot-on in analysis yesterday. This was definitely another episode about the fleetingness of just about everything. Let's do this.
@ranchthoughts in their ephemerality analysis yesterday hit on the two big themes of episode 3: the continued fleeting of time, and stronger attempts of control. (@slayerkitty also nailed some excellent observations about voyeurism, which I'll hopefully have time to get into in a bit.) We were left to see how Top, Sand, and Nick, respectively, dealt with the attempts of Mew, Ray, and Boston, the three college friends, to control their environments -- and their people -- around them, all to varying degrees of.... I don't think we can say success.
I wonder if I can try to map this out, this web of attempted control. But before I do this, I want to repeat something that I jotted down in my notes as I watched the episode:
These guys are spending a disproportional amount of time -- especially Boston, Sand, and Ray -- explaining that their dalliances are only fleeting and non-committal. I noted that Sand seemed to be weakening just slightly at that during the car make-out sesh with Ray. (At the same time, I think Sand was also like, this guy's available rn? Well -- awlright, whateves, shrugs, I'm in the mood.)
But more surprisingly, WOW -- is Boston EVER BAD at setting boundaries. (Considering the discussions we on Tumblr were having about Boston's shower scene last week, that is very not surprising.)
My dude. My DUDE. "YOU CAN CALL OUR RELATIONSHIP WHATEVER YOU LIKE?" You call THAT being clear about friends with benefits? Well done, dumbass. Bro, Khai from Theory of Love is waving his damn hands in front of you, being all like, "NAAWWWW, THAT'S NOT HOW YOU DO THIS, DUDE, NOOOOOOOOOO."
And THEN Nick taps the car, but hold up, let me get back to THAT in a sec.
Anyway: @ranchthoughts did an excellent control outline here, but I'm just going to do a very quick interpersonal web to demonstrate how these guys are actually failing spectacularly at keeping things together for their own selfishness sake:
Boston -->
1) is trying to manage his "relationship" with Nick, quite failingly 2) is trying to convince Top to sleep with him by planting in Top's mind doubts about Mew and Mew's alleged virginity
Mew -->
3) is... doing what, at this point? Top is calling Mew his boyfriend. Why is Mew still holding out on sex? What's the point of the game at this point?
Ray -->
4) is clearly intrigued by Sand, to the point of hanging out at the bar alone, and inviting Sand to perform at the pool party. But, Ray: 5) is still clearly drawn to Mew. Back to Mew:
Mew -->
6) is still very aware that he has a draw on Ray (cc @neuroticbookworm). As @neuroticbookworm noted to me last night: Mew didn't call Cheum or Boston when he lost his key. He called Top first -- of course, he had to, Top is his boyfriend. And THEN, he called Ray. Mew knew Ray was checking out Sand all night. Mew called Ray out on it. MEW ENCOURAGED RAY TO GO FOR IT. And yet, Mew called Ray, knowing likely that he was going to be interrupting something. And in a Pavlovian reaction (credit @neuroticbookworm), Ray stops everything with Sand in the car to run to Mew.
Top -->
7) is trying to control his urges around Boston, and fails quite spectacularly
Sand -->
8) tries to give Ray the ol' "just friends" razzle-dazzle, but listen, when the boi be cute like that and all kissy-kissy, then, Sand, I'm not holding it against you, you had every right to dive on in, my man. And finally:
Nick -->
9) Nick is outta control, ha. I see some corners of sympathy for Nick around this way and that, but a few words here on this.
Boston is a terrifically BAD communicator. I want to say that Boston has had a consistent message for Nick: there's nothing going on here. But that's not quite the case. Boston's ALLLLL over the place with the way he's talking to Nick.
I've been in situations where I desperately wanted a man that I was sleeping with to be my boyfriend. I know the ache of being held at arm's length. It's a horrible feeling to not quite know what your FWB is thinking about you at any given moment.
On the flip side -- oh, that flip side. This kind of reminds me of how I thought about Third in Theory of Love. Boston's inconsistent communication with Nick should, arguably, be a red flag for Nick. If Nick wants, say, a relationship with Boston, welp -- do you really want a relationship with a guy who's holding you at arm's length? I might argue that Boston's inconsistent communication is CLEAR communication that he's not ready for whatever Nick is wanting from him, whether it's a relationship or even an exclusive FWB arrangement.
Again, I know and remember the feeling of being held back, of being pushed away. But as I grew up throughout my 20s (A LONG TIME AGO, DAMN IT), I figured out that the way I could find happiness was by being accountable to myself and any future partner I might have. If a guy was wasting my time, then -- he was wasting my time, and there was no other story to it. I had to learn to move on to find what I really wanted and needed for the betterment of my life.
My man, Nick, on the other hand, taps Boston's car and hears and sees the bang-bang. Boston's up to no good, no doubt, he is messing with EVERYONE. But, Nick -- what do you want from this? Where do you think this is going to go? If I were you -- damn, brother, if I were YOUR MOM -- I'd be like, sashay away. But, no, you tapped his car, and we'll find out what's really going on with that, hopefully, in the next episodes.
Last little bits. Some blue-balling in this episode. Oof. Arguably, Mew's been putting the squeeze on Top over the long haul. But to see Ray do that to Sand in the car -- eeeeyikes. Sand walked away from that with clarity -- I was impressed.
I am not getting enough Jennie Panhan in this show. First off -- FIRST OFF -- she is SLAMMIN'. Did you see those biceps? And her calm demeanor as Yo. As opposed to Cheum, who knows that Ray can get whatever he needs, fiscally, from his father -- Yo encourages Ray to get off his ass and seek out answers to his questions and feelings about Sand himself. (@twig-tea attributes this to Yo knowing that one can't control everything in one's life, an analysis that I love.) Yo encourages a touch of independence from her friends. I wonder if this is a theme from her that will continue to unwind moving forward.
We finally saw Title! And I would like to see more Tee Teeradej, pretty pwease.
Finally, rolling back to @slayerkitty's thoughts on voyeurism: @slayerkitty posited that each episode had a different modality of voyeurism and passive participation in engagement with others, an analysis that I love. (I think that absolutely speaks to the sense of aloofness and disconnect that I continue to get out of Ray and Boston in particular.) @lurkingshan also noted that a lot of the flirtation and sex in the first three episodes have involved cameras, photography, audiences, and so on.
Voyeurism: you're watching something, but you're not necessarily participating IN IT. Your engagement with an event is at arm's length.
I want to think that this, in part, is a continued commentary on the shipped couples acting in this show, and how we're SEEING them continue to break down. We might see a kiss between Khaotung and Book next week. We've seen Neo and Force together now, acting out intimacy. There's something happening between the characters of Sand and Top that will have First and Force interacting. The passive act of expecting the shipped couples to continue to ship -- is that not voyeurism on demand on behalf of the fandom?
I don't want to be passive about this: I actively continue to cheer for the ships to sink. This episode was GREAT, it held a lot, it was complicated and very open-ended, and there's a lot that needs to be explained next week.
(Speaking of next week: I will likely not have OF meta, as I'll be moving. If I do have meta, it'll maybe be stream of consciousness from the depths of my disorganized despair. But I'll be back in action after America's Labor Day -- SUPPORT UNIONS!)

Saz's Sandman Masterpost
Hi there! It's about time I sorted out this blog and put all my Sandman posts in one place. If you're new here, I adore the Sandman in all its forms and my blog has become a bit of a love letter to this masterpiece of media lately. I mostly write meta analysis, love to discuss the work and the characters, and occassionally try my hand at running fandom events. My ask box is always open and I am always happy to answer any questions about Sandman so please do reach out to me if you like my meta :)
I welcome all fans of The Sandman here, though I can occassionally be NSFW so if that's not your jam make sure you have "NSFW" tag blacklisted. I'm a multishipper of the firm believe that Dream of the Endless should be passed around the other characters like a bowl of goth candy. I don't tolerate ship hate. It's all good here my loves.
I have a fairly decent tagging system. I tag all ships, characters, fanart, meta discussions, fanfiction, etc. You can find the list of common tags below.
My Meta Analysis
Masterpost of Dreamling meta - this is an eight part highly detailed analysis of Dreamling in the show and how it differs from the comic and audiobook, with a focus on how queercoding was used to emphasise a deeper relationship between Dream and Hob.
Hob Gadling - A Queer Romantic - a meta about unreliable narrators, Jim/Peggy and Hob's queer potential.
The Problem with Thessaly - an opinion piece on this problematic comic character and how the show could solve this issue.
Lucienne/Lucien - How the Librarian Became the Chief - a thorough analysis of Lucienne's character in the show and how she differs from the comic and makes everything so much more hopeful.
Tales in the Sand/Men of Good Fortune - How a small swap in story placement can drastically change the tone, and foreshadowing.
Dream of the Endless - A Romantic Fool - a deep analysis about Dream and his love of romance
How to Adapt Orpheus - Theories and discussions about how the show can navigate that particular element of the comics.
How to Adapt Orpheus x 2 - definitely worth reading all the discussions on this one as well.
Shipping comic!Morpheus and merging characters in the show - can I hear it for Morpheus/Pharamond PLEASE!
A Collaborative Post about Morpheus as the villain of the story
Could Morpheus ever be content to be single?
Morpheus and Sex - an analytical point of view
Obsessive Desire - Their complex feelings for Dream - an answered ask about the siblings relationship. (I have a draft meta in the works elaborating on this that I can't wait to finish).
Fandom Events
#Death Appreciation Week - To celebrate the release of Dead Boy Detectives which guest stars Death of the Endless, I ran a Death Appreciation Week where anyone could submit fanworks focused on Death. Follow the tag on my blog which also includes a lot of reblogged older works of Death, or follow the main tumblr tag to see just that work created for the event.
#Sandtober2023 - For inktober 2023, I ran a Sandman themed inktober event which was a huge success and inspired hundreds of amazing Sandman art pieces. You can check out the Sandtober2023 main tumblr tag here. I am probably going to run this event again in October 2024 so watch this space nearer the time for that! :)
If you have any ideas for Sandman fandom events you would like to see please send me a DM.
General Blog Tags
I have a relatively consistent tagging system on my blog so to cover the main ones:
#The Sandman - literally every post about the Sandman will include this tag, so if you are a loyal mutual from fandoms past and you want to block this tag you won't see me cluttering up your feed with Sandman stuff (and thank you for still following me even if you're not a Sandman fan!)
#Dreamling - tag for the Morpheus x Hob Gadling fandom ship. I will tag all things Dreamling - fanart, fanfics, fan theories, crack posts, gifsets etc.
#Sandman Meta - any analysis about Sandman will be tagged with this. This includes both my own analysis and reblogged analysis.
#Sandman Comic Spoilers - I tag for any posts that include Sandman story information not yet revealled in the show. In case there is anyone left on Tumblr who hasn't already been spoiled for this 30 year old comic story.
Character Tags - I generally tag for any characters I reblog or post about. So if you ever want to search for posts about a specific character, you can just find the character tag in my blog. For example #Dream of the Endless or #Johanna Constantine
Ship tags - like with character tags, I always tag fandom ships. Usually by the most popular fandom name for them. #morphanna #Gaultienne
Other fandoms - I will also always tag other fandoms. I have a very long running #destiel tag, I also tag for #good omens and #ineffable husbands and I will always tag the show name, abbreviation, and ship names for any other fandoms.
Other tags - I do try to tag for content warnings where I can, but usually only extreme things. Then again, it is rare for me to post about triggering content. Even squicky content is unlikely to be found on my blog. If you ever come across something on my blog that you feel isn't tagged appropriately please just DM me and I will correct that.
A bit about me
If my blog intro hasn't covered it so far let me clarify here. I am an adult, in my 30s and have never stopped being a passionate fan about the things I love. You don't stop loving things when you hit a certain age, you just find you have less time to devote to your hobbies because of work. I am a professional with a full time job, I come here to relax and unwind. I have been in fandom far too long to be remotely interested in fandom drama. Ship wars do not interest me. Weird anti-sex anti-kink purity policing has no power here. I am fiercely anti-censorship. If I hear the word "proship" in a negative sense I will roll my eyes and assume you are a minor who has been horribly mislead by puritanicals. I don't tolerate hate, accusational bullshit, bullying behaviour, cult-like fandom worship, or any form of fandom policing. I have no time for "big name fans" and the culture around them. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and the trauma. Learn your fandom history lest you be doomed to repeat it.
I do not engage in performative social justice. I have my beliefs, my politics, and they generally revolve around the concept that people should be fucking decent human beings and let people be free to live as they choose. Don't come at me for not yelling about the next big world ending event. The world is always ending, people are always dying, there is always a genocide happening, its fucking exhausting. Just do what you can in your actual lives, donate where you can manage, provide support to those in need, and vote out the bastards who fucked it all up.
If you've read this far and are still here welcome! I hope you love my blog and want to be fandom friends. Come send me an ask, a DM, reply to my posts, engage with my meta, and just generally scream at me about Sandman. I always love it when people scream at me about Sandman. :)

Have an unpopular opinion about a BL? Don't worry, we probably do too. Saying all the things you do or donât wanna hear Part 5 (of 4) is here to engage with BL media from Japan, Thailand, China, Korea and more. We're talking film-making techniques, narrative analysis, fandom woes, while asking questions like, hey why don't the bottoms move their arms? We may not be experts, but we are loud, chaotic, and full of opinions.
In todayâs episode weâre discussing the origins of our hosts De and Sinnaâs friendship and Only Friends! Mainly Only Friends cause, whew, is there a lot to talk about. Anyone else still salty over that ending? Or just us?
Show Description: Mew, Ray, Boston and Namchueam; a group of business students running a hostel together-blur the lines between friendship and romance.
Where to Watch: Only Friends
Check out the read more below for further reading resources on topics we discussed in today's episode like framing devices, and color theory in film. Along with a list fanworks we loved from the fandom! Add any fanworks you loved as well, give the people their stars.
