It's been a week since that eventful graduation party. Veronica has blocked Vaughn on all socials, but that doesn't stop him from trying. She deletes all the messages he sends through unknown numbers. She feels used, stupid and gullible She thought they had something

Veronica: I just feel like...I wasted my time you know? When he first approached me I knew he wasn't serious. I don't know when that changed but it did and it blew up in my face

Luna: You love him?

Veronica: I dunno...I don't even want to think about him anymore. I just feel so fucking stupid. I thought we had something, Luna. I really liked him he made me feel so safe and now I'm stuck here with these feelings and I don't know what to do

Luna: Let's get out of the city to clear your mind. This is the worst place to be

Veronica: Leave the city? Like running away?

Luna: More like taking a breather. We won't be coming back here in the Fall. We can find a new place that Vaughn doesn't know and we'll act like he doesn't exist

[Five Nights at Fuuko's]

Hngh...Kururu...only a single line of dialogue right after losing your arc...it's not fair...

Ah well, I do really like the idea of her being an evil teammate, begrudging everything that she's made to do until everything snaps and she's forced to choose between betraying her captors or realizing that she loves them. That is the plan, right, Tozuka? And there is an omake coming up where we see why she's choosing to go along with them in the meantime, yes? Hm???

Tatiana

Of course, since we've started the Tatiana arc, it's only natural that Tatiana get the lion's share of the focus this time around. Much like Top, her story is pretty different this time around, though instead of having her tragedy avoided and then taking a different path, this time her tragedy has been significantly delayed, to the point that the tragedy itself now has the potential to be much more devastating than before. Exactly how it was delayed I have no idea, but that's the kind of thing that I don't think really matters too much in the grand scheme

Tatiana & Billy

What does matter is where her story is going, and with Tatiana meeting Betty before anyone else in the Union, I think I'm starting to get a clearer picture of it. Last week was basically just reiterating the plan to use Remember, which seemed redundant at the time, but with this chapter hammering home that Billy's family is very much present this time around, I think that Tozuka was trying to set up how Billy and Tatiana's family dynamic was going to reemerge despite both avoiding their tragedies. By creating a sisterly bond between Tatiana and Betty, it will be easier for both her and Billy to incorporate their recovered memories into their current personalities and lifestyles without either feeling like they're intruding on the other's revived families. Granted, we've only seen Tatiana interact with Betty and not Veronica, and Billy interacting with Tatiana's parents should logically be its own can of worms, but that should be easy enough to patch over

Tatiana's Hair

While this new version of Tatiana's story changes all of the surface details, the core of her story remains very much the same - Tatiana is isolated from the world around her, this time by her career rather than by her Rule. As she so succinctly puts it, she can't touch the people that are special to her

I've said before that long hair is a recurring symbol for isolation in UU, and while Tatiana's is certainly much shorter than it was in L100, it's still quite long. In fact, it's because of her distinctive long hair that she ends up getting swamped by her fans, with its dramatic reveal in her recreating Fuuko's iconic long hair reveal in ch.1. Even being shorter than before, its length both symbolizes and enforces her isolation and loneliness, which in turn almost incites her tragedy, which would bring her further isolation

Negator Tragedies

Speaking of, this is the first time we've ever seen a Negator's awakening be halted rather than just having their tragedy be averted. It's subtle, but I think it goes a long way in explaining the mechanics of the tragedies. We've gone back and forth on this for a while, so let's do a quick recap

Originally, we believed that God (likely Sun, but maybe Luna too) arbitrarily chose Negators upon the previous Vessel's death and then timed their awakening for the least opportune moment

Then, we learned that the previous Vessel chooses their successor upon death, and many fans started blaming them for the tragedies, believing them to be negligent at best or malicious at worst

From there, we theorized that while the Vessels chose their successors, God decided on the time of awakening, watching with bated breath for the right moment

This chapter though suggests that Rules have something like preprogrammed triggers, that they transfer into the successor and lie dormant until certain conditions are met. These may be specific to the individual Rule, but I think it may be a decently broad range of criteria. In Untouchable's case, her ability has now been shown awakening under two completely distinct circumstances: when Tatiana was happy (her birthday party with her favorite cake) and when she was upset (being surrounded by people that made her feel isolated). This suggests that God has the trap set to spring at any moment of extreme emotion, whether it's the saddest, angriest, or even happiest of the Vessel's life. Certain thoughts and desires pertaining to the Rule may qualify as well, like Void wanting to hit his opponent to win his fight or Sean wanting to pass his audition for a movie so he could be seen, but those are both still strong desires and may qualify as extreme emotions

The main point is, this scene makes it quite clear that God is actually pretty hands-off with the moment of activation itself. Rather than plotting and controlling the course of the Negators' lives, it's more like he put a mousetrap in their souls before going back to his own business while he waited. Of course, it is also possible that both are true, and that God does take direct action to facilitate the Negators feeling extreme emotions. UMA Heat's appearance in Gina's town was a bit spontaneous, and unlike Fuuko getting her jacket caught on some rebar, I'm pretty unclear how Tatiana lost both her hat and her wig...didn't seem particularly windy to me...

Pinky Promise

With Tatiana's awakening being averted, though, Fuuko was able to make contact without incident, claiming that she was back after 200 years to finally make good on her promise to Tatiana. At first I thought she meant she was keeping the promise to hold hands with Tatiana once they had normal bodies from ch.25, but I realized there were a few issues with that: 1) Fuuko still has Unluck, so the conditions for that promise haven't been met; 2) Tatiana still doesn't remember Fuuko, so the significance of that promise would be lost on her; 3) they shook hands for that promise, when this chapter deliberately made note of pinky promises being important to Tatiana

Upon realizing that, I hightailed it to the Ragnarok arc, and sure enough, Fuuko and Tatiana's parting in ch.121 was a pinky promise to meet up and become friends again in the next Loop. I'm sure plenty of other readers picked up on that just fine, but for anyone else who thought it was for the first promise, know you weren't alone in making that mistake

What's Next

So now the question is how Fuuko's intervention will change Tatiana's interpretation of Untouchable. I think it would be massively cruel to have her go back to being a naked Kinder Surprise after learning about her current insecurities and career, so I would hope that her new version will be a bit more lenient, like maybe counting her clothes as an extension of herself, or perhaps regulating her barrier to be imperceptibly close to her body so her clothes can fit over it?

Either way, I expect she'll still have Sphere, Nico did say that he's already working on it, but I think it would be cool if she could use it as a versatile armor along the same lines of Top/Isshin's Runner's Regalia or even Void's Next Ring and Creed's End War. If she does, then I hope Sphere will get a better name to line up with all of those

Actually, I suppose the best question right now is how long it'll be before we even see Untouchable again. I figure it won't be next chapter at the very least, but whether it's the week after or a month from now, I can't really tell. I kind of hope we take a little bit of a breather, just chilling with Tatiana as friends and helping her develop some dynamics with the group for two or three weeks before all hell breaks loose with UMA Time or War showing up to rain on the parade and prompting Untouchable to become a bigger beast than it's ever been. Who knows, maybe we'll even get lucky and get a little bit more Kururu in that time...

Winter by Marissa Meyer

What a beautiful story. I have nothing bad to say about this book. This might actually be the first time.

This is the sixth book I’ve read this year that was over 800 pages, but this is the first one that didn’t feel like it. It was perfectly paced and the plot didn’t feel overly complicated at any point. With books this long, the characters or plot or both can sometimes feel tedious, but this was so good.

I thought I might find this series too childish, but I didn’t at all. It’s a great story that didn’t rely on shock value through random and underdeveloped plot twists, as many YA books tend to do these days. I really like how she introduced characters throughout this series. For example, we met Thorne in book 2, and then he ends up being the main love interest in book 3, similar to how we met Jacin in book 3 and he’s a main character in book 4. They were subtle introductions where we could form opinions on the characters prior to knowing that they were love interests. I would give this book 5 stars just for this alone.

I immediately noticed from Chapter 1 that we are getting more detailed descriptions of surroundings. I’ve found Meyer to be an author who mostly relies on dialogue, which I personally prefer, as some authors tend to overdo it with the descriptions (Sarah J Maas' interior design book aka Tower of Dawn). Meyer strikes a great balance of both in this book. I often find with YA series that quality of writing tends to decrease as the series goes on and publishers rush things, but this was the complete opposite. I enjoyed Winter as much as Cinder and Cress, and much more than Scarlet.

In YA, authors tend to simplify wars. Often, huge wars happen and they end in a matter of days. That is not entirely realistic (not that fantasy has to be realistic, but this specifically tends to be skipped over lazily). Of course, wars can and have ended in a matter of days in real life, but that’s very uncommon. Here, Meyer maintained that battle element, while also not turning into a full on war, so that she could end the actual battle in one night. This is also beneficial for us as readers because action scenes in YA are not always popular, especially when they’re only introduced in the final book of the series. The main fight in this book was contained to one night and it was on a smaller scale, so it remained more realistic while also not adding a bunch of action scenes. My expectations were low in this regard, so I was expecting for there to be a huge war between Luna and Earth contained into this one book, bur Meyer made the right decision in not doing that.

The ending was perfectly done. I would like to read more books about the characters lives following the events of Winter, but I don’t absolutely need it. (Update: I've since seen that Meyer has written non-canon short stories in this world. This is the best way to do it for this ending. Veronica Roth should take notes). The ending didn’t leave any obvious unanswered questions, in my opinion. It was a very well written story from start to finish. Even though I didn’t enjoy Scarlet, I can appreciate that it was a good story that tied into the rest of the series well and Scarlet as a character became very likeable in this final book.

The length of this book is interesting because it’s more than twice as long as the previous books in this series. I wonder if this was for contractual reasons or if she just wanted to keep the theme of naming each book after a different character, and didn’t want to ruin that by separating this story and making it a 5 book series or introducing a fifth fairytale.

My favorite aspect of this book and this series as a whole is how Meyer integrated all the stories, while still maintaining their importance as independent characters. Perhaps this applies slightly less to Wolf (and Scarlet until the second half of Winter). With this many main characters, it would have been easy for some of them to get lost in the background, but it was very well executed here.

Overall, this entire plot was so unique. This is a take on fairytale retellings that will be very hard to beat. I can’t understand why this series is not more popular than it is. It would also be such an amazing TV show, although expensive. I hope this story gets the recognition it deserves one day. I’m really going to miss these wonderful characters, even Wolf

A little headcanon I thought about, considering Naomi's personality, is that....

Ive been obsessing over the storm twins and thought about this a few days ago, but I was gonna be busy over the weekend. But I can finally post.

But, I honestly love these twins, along with the madison twins. I just love them, and I'd love to get their dolls. But, I don't know where to start. Brayden wouldn't even question it. In fact, he already has a hot cup of coffee waiting for his wife the moment she wakes up. He has the creamers and sugars all laid out for her with a pastry on the side.

Gideon would be confused when the fuck did Grayson start drinking coffee? He is strictly a smoothie/tea drinker ONLY. But if Grayson is insistent then he'd do it. Ask Grayson how he'd like to have his coffee, black? creamers? milk? sugar? doesn't matter it's getting done

Benji is also confused, Malcolm drinking coffee? since when? who even suggested to Malcolm he should start drinking coffee. He would have to get to the bottom of that first before even thinking of getting coffee. They don't even have it in their apartment

Vaghun would ask for a kiss or a hug and Veronica will tell him to get fucked. She'd probably call another man on her roster to get her coffee from Starbucks before Vaghun takes the phone outta her hand and gets up to make her coffee. He fucking tried it. He still gets his kisses and hugs after though lolol.

Daisuke just says yes and heads to the kitchen to prepare Luna a cup. Also gets her something to eat and asks her if she would like anything else while he is in the kitchen. Malcolm would probably be there cuz he has issues with Daisuke and asks for some bullshit frappe to keep him busy in the kitchen.

Apollo would say no cuz she thinks Sam is too spoiled and needs to get it herself. Sam just flashes her big brown eyes and Apollo crumbles and makes it for her anyways. Sam doesn't drink it since she doesn't even drink coffee and now Apollo is upset.

I’m a very very basic person. Noé is my fave of all time. I could write a million things about him. I want to screenshot every frame and panel he exists in. He makes me go insane. He’s so wonderful and tormented, he’s like the Xie Lian of VnC to me..

I like nice people and women, (yes Vanitas that means I’m counting you as a nice person, you can screech at that as self effacingly as you want) and the two don’t have to both be true at once. I didn’t like Veronica de Sade particularly much (she was a good character, just not one I liked) until she was revealed to be in a relationship with [let’s just call her Francis] and I lost my mind, as did the rest of the fandom. Genuine representation of adult lesbians in manga is not that common!

Francis is just a different level of cool. I love her, her mysteriousness, and the sheer catharsis I got from her yelling at the Teacher about jeu de paume and calling him an old fart lmao. She’s everything I could aspire to be and the physical definition of ‘never let them know your next move’.

God. Roland Fortis. So much to say no brain to articulate. He healed a part of me bro. And of course Luna is Luna and just. So cool. I wish they weren’t dead so badly but at least we’ll learn some more of their lore. They were the world’s best incompetent mother/father and I love them for that.

I don’t have much to say about the others, I do really enjoy the rest of the 3 of the Main Four, and of course all the Dhams are very dear to me.

I find the Teacher and Ruthven very interesting (excellent characters!) but also. I personally dislike them a lot so they get shunted down

1896, Part 4-1897, Part 1

Seating is in short supply at the school now. Some of the younger children have to wait until someone leaves school to attend.

Olivia isn't as happy to do needlework as her sisters, but sometimes Lydia can get her to sit still.

Uncle Maurice finally married! The former Miss Luna Villareal seems lovely.

Virginia has learned everything they can teach her at school! Her parents are so proud of her. She's now ready to find employment or further education, if she and her parents choose that. Maybe she would become a nanny, or see if the Merchants needed any help in their general store? Maybe join a larger household and try to work her way up to housekeeper?

They aren't short on money, and they don't need to make room for more growing children, so they decide to give her some time to see if she would rather marry now or go to work first.

While mom makes Winterfest breakfast, the children tease each other.

At some point the family portrait... fell off the wall. It's been returned, hopefully on a sturdier nail.

Father Winter visited them again, but Virginia found herself feeling unwell. She recovered, but they were thankful that she hadn't went out to work.

Eleanor and Andrew caught it too, and they sent Olivia off to rest as well, just in case.

Veronica is now old enough to attend classes with Lydia and Laurence's younger children.

I can no longer deal with the lag caused by having a lot of things in the fridge's inventory on top of the lag from custom food on top of the general lag from having so many plants and animals and sims on the lot. Simple living is gone.

In the next week, Andrew ages up to teen and Virginia starts looking for a husband.

I would like to point out again that years are wrong. They are proportionate to the decade based on the heir's life--year 0 starts when the heir gets married and becomes head of the household, year 1 starts when the next heir is born and 1-8 are proportionate to the heir's age, year 9 is the heir looking for a spouse. That is, of course, depending on getting a male heir for this time period. If there are only girls, then all bets are off. And if an heir dies and there's a backup heir, who knows? Right now, I have YA sims in game who, by the years, are 10. Year tracking is for me, not for reality. In this save, at least. Some years may be very short or very long, depending on in-game events.

A mini story in pictures and my rules for marrying (they got a bit long) under the cut.

I kept that cowplant alive so much longer than I usually manage to do when I'm trying, and I wasn't trying.

My rules for marrying, probably until 1950:

Must have graduated high school or reached 30 days as a teen (I will allow them to continue high school while married if needed), whichever comes first. If they don't graduate early or don't attend high school because they can't afford the tuition, they have to reach the 30 day point, out of 42.

I only roll for marriage-related rolls when they reach that point.

Girls must not have an unmarried older sister (who will marry) living at home. Widowed is fine, but if they're going to marry, the older has to get married first, or at least give it a good shot.

Then they have to find a partner. Since I'm not following teens to school, my playstyle does not lend itself to already having a sweetheart. Typically, a girl would marry an older boy/man, and a boy/man would marry someone younger, for quite a few decades.

Since I can't apply the graduated rule to NPCs, they follow the 30 days rule, more or less, to marry my sims--MCCC can do what it does. I'm keeping track of townies, but I might need to adjust some ages. This means boys will need to wait for the 30 day point to have a wife the same age or younger.

Marking chosen NPCs to not marry to save them for my sim is allowed. I still won't force it if they hate each other when the time comes, but I can make them wait and give it a try.

If I find I don't have enough sims to pick from or don't like the ones available, there's always the gallery or making them myself. I like picking ones who already exist, because then there's varied genetics, though.

For finding a spouse, I think I'm going to have a club for single sims to flirt and see how that works--my sim and appropriately aged potential partners and other potential partners for those potential partners (so not just Virginia and a bunch of guys). Parental supervision is required for a club gathering, but they can't be club members because being single will be a requirement, so that if anyone marries, they will be removed.
