Just finished reading Pez Dispenser Debris (I don’t even go there but I am fueled by Wiki articles and a love for your storytelling) and first of all—amazing!!! 10/10, I think I need to watch this series now. 

Second, I  noticed that (while very much distinct) Yuuta & Izuku have a lot of similarities in the voice you gave them—maybe it’s the constant panic attacks or perhaps both of  them placing blame for everything squarely on their own shoulders, but ough it makes for the perfect blend of gut-punching angst. I’d love to hear any ramblings you currently have about either of them. I am currently obsessed with both of them now and am placing the blame on you <3

I’m gonna pretty heavily discuss some spoilers for my hero academia in this. I figured that was okay since you’d already read my fanfic and the wiki so the cat is out of the metaphorical bag. That being said, maybe wait to read this answer if you want to not be spoiled for more details in my hero.

Yuuta and Izuku absolutely have the most similar voices out of all of my narrators and it is 90% because they are both completely insane and in violent need of a Xanax and a nice soothing cup of chamomile tea. God I love them both so much. They should each be heavily medicated.

My hero academia is a pretty great watch through the Shie Hassaikai arc. The concept is entertaining, the characters are GREAT, and the world building is really cool.

Then the story sort of. Went to shit.

I tried for a while after that, but eventually had to stop watching. My friends and I have a group chat named “horikoshi just call us” because we got so despondent at the writing decisions after that arc.

Horikoshi. If you’re out there. If you’re reading this. Just call us. We just want to help.

That being said, my love for the characters maintains its death grip on me. I simply adore them. They’re delights.

Yuuta and Izuku, on their face, have a lot of similarities as protagonists. The aforementioned insanity and need of Xanax, of course, but the skeleton of the stories has a lot of common touchstones and themes, like:

Both characters have some kind of history with suicidal ideation or tendencies. In the second scene of JJK0, it’s established that Yuuta canonically tried to kill himself. In the first episode of BNHA, Izuku is told to kill himself by his bullies, in an act which appears to be common to izuku’s life, and the only reason Izuku comes up with to not do it is “then you’d get in trouble for telling me to do it.”

Both characters have severe self worth issues. Yuuta’s looking for a reason to be alive at the start of JJK0. He’s looking for a right to be alive. In a way, Izuku is too at the start of BNHA. At the open of action, he is told by everyone in his life that he is useless. His nickname is “Deku,” which uses some of the same kanji as “Dekunobo,” meaning blockhead. The most direct translation were given is that this is a way of calling him useless. He’s the powerless member of a society choked with superpower, and he’s been told his entire life that he can do nothing, that his dreams are pointless, and that he’s a burden who would be better off dead.

They’re both saddled with power they can’t fully control. Yuuta with Rika, and Izuku with One for All, a transferable power that’s too strong to be contained in his body.

They both have a close relationship with an impossibly strong mentor that they are implied to be the successor of. Yuuta with Gojo, as he’s second only to Gojo in the modern age, and Izuku with All Might (aka Toshinori Yaga), who he is more literally taking on the mantle of One for All from.

They both are chugging that Loving Their Friends Juice and have tried to kill grown men with their bare hands as a result

That all being said, they could not be more different characters and honestly aren’t all that similar.

I have this sort of lasting grievance with literary analysis when people take a list of common plot points or events and use them to make the argument that characters are similar or parallel one another. Like, that’s all facial. The real question is how do they substantively handle those events. How do their story arcs treat those things? How does their character react to them?

Yuuta and Izuku’s actual substantive characters don’t really react to those events in the same way at all. The analysis could go on all day in this respect, really, but the biggest difference is how their respective story arcs treat the cornerstone of their original conflicts.

Yuuta opens action with Rika as the cornerstone of his conflict. She’s who he wants to free, she’s who he’s chained to, and it’s her protection of him that makes him think he deserves to die. Izuku’s cornerstone, meanwhile, is his own Quirklessness. He desperately wants to be a hero, and everyone in his life tells him he can’t be because he is Quirkless. He’s useless because he’s Quirkless. He should kill himself because he’s Quirkless. He’s a burden and always will be because he’s Quirkless.

And while Yuuta’s arc reconciles him with his cornerstone, Izuku’s forgoes it entirely.

The story just. Forgets. That he’s Quirkless. They stop talking about it. It never comes up again. It doesn’t make any real big impact on his character or decisions. It’s one of my biggest axes to grind with how the story developed, and it’s actually one of the biggest reasons why I wrote pez dispenser debris.

Pez dispenser debris was actually inspired by this one piece of my hero academia art where Izuku is hugging his younger self. I don’t know if it was official art or fan art, and I have no idea where it is or where to find it because by god have I tried so I can find it and link it for credit/to boost it. I saw it literally years ago, thought “oh that’s cool,” wrote the original first scene of the fic (where Midoriya stops the bus and is hit by the Quirk), wasn’t feeling it, got distracted by other projects, went to law school, graduated law school, signed up to take the bar exam, and was suddenly electrified in the last fucking month of studying with this fugue state of feverish artistic inspiration. I have never written so easily or so compulsively in my life. I’d write for eight unbroken hours and it would be fucking magic every time. It was like an addiction. I was writhing with a need to create and had so much fucking anxiety about the test I was not studying for instead. The words could not be restrained.

Anyway I taught myself three subjects on the plane ride to the state I was taking it in and passed anyway so it’s fine we’re fine

The moral of the story is that this story has been cooking long enough for me to get two more diplomas than I had when I started it and I have no idea where to find that fucking piece of art that inspired it, but if I find it, I’ll reblog it so y’all can see it too.

The thing is, the narrative sort of forcibly excluding Izuku’s past as Quirkless would make total sense to me if it was used as something Izuku himself was doing.

Izuku necessarily had to hide the truth of his former Quirkless status at the start of action—he needed to keep the secret of One for All. Like, he could not let people find out that a Quirk was transferrable, but you know, just the most powerful one, and also he had it, please come torture it out of him.

But as the narrative goes on, that rationale becomes less important. He has people he can trust with it. And yeah, eventually One for All becomes more known, but the discussion is all about him being all might’s successor. Him being Quirkless and how that affected him and still affects him isn’t really discussed or treated as important. And Izuku doesn’t act like it’s important to him either. He never really thinks about it.

And I just hated that. Like. He spent almost his entire life as a member of society who was spit on. He’s had a Quirk for less than a year. How are his experiences with Quirklessness not important to how he interacts with the world?

The other point of contention I had was Mirio.

Mirio is this superstar of a senpai who takes Izuku under his wing. He has an extremely powerful quirk that’s only as effective as it is because he put in the work and learned how to handle it. He’s a perfect, eternally smiling paragon of heroism. He’s flagged early as the one out of everyone, including heroes with established careers, who is most likely to replace All Might.

He’s also the one who was supposed to get One for All.

His mentor had found him and trained him to be All Might’s successor. Before All Might could meet him, however, he found this feral raccoon child in a sewer and said “oh my god I can’t not offer him incomprehensible power within the first three hours of meeting him” and tripped face first into fatherhood.

During a rescue mission, Mirio loses his Quirk in a way that’s borderline irreversible. There’s no known cure, and the only possible one is dependent on a little girl learning how to control an extremely volatile and dangerous quirk and using it in a way she never has before.

So surely, they’re going to commit to that writing decision, right? He’s Quirkless. We’re bringing back having Quirkless characters. It’s going to be this sick as hell juxtaposition between Izuku and Mirio. We are at least going to force Izuku to reflect on his own times as Quirkless or have some kind of discussion about how Mirio is treated differently now that he is Quirkless.

But no. He gets his Quirk back by the next season. We don’t talk about it much. It’s more of a minor inconvenience than anything.

It’s almost as if the show accepted as an actual rule that you couldn’t be a hero without a Quirk. And then just. Forgot. Everything it had to do with its literal protagonist.

Anyway, I hated it.

In contrast, I fucking loved how yuuta’s storyline with Rika ends. That scene where Yuuta’s turning back to Rika, thanking her for loving him, telling him they can die together? I’m obsessed with it. I recently moved across the country and listened to that theme song on loop during the drive.

Yuuta and Rika’s love was unhealthy. They hurt each other. But it wasn’t malicious.

They just didn’t know how to love each other in a way that didn’t hurt.

They were in shit circumstances. But the love was there.

Yuuta felt guilty for Rika’s love for him and his for her almost the entire narrative. He thought he cursed her with his love. He wanted to kill himself because of how she hurt people out of love for him. It’s why I have moments in sea glass gardens where Yuuta talks about begging Rika to stop loving him—he didn’t know why love had to hurt so goddamn bad, and he’s sorry for that, he really is. He wishes he was better at it than he was.

At the end of JJK0, Yuuta truly is the last person who remembers Rika as she was and still loves her for who she is. He’s faced with Geto, who wants to use her as a weapon. Everyone treats her as a threat or a tool, except for Yuuta.

Like. Just that moment. Of loving someone so genuinely, and being the last one who does, and knowing that everyone else will just use them. I’m obsessed with it.

Yuuta reconciles with his love for Rika and her love for him, and they’re both finally freed. It’s this perfect moment of acceptance that I adore. He comes to terms with his past. It doesn’t hurt him so much anymore.

I wrote pez dispenser debris to sort of force Izuku to have that kind of reconciliation. As it is, he hasn’t reconciled with his own Quirklessness and how that affected him. I wanted to give him something he couldn’t physically escape and had to face.

HOW MHA BOYS WOULD INTERACT WITH YOUR NATURAL HAIR

ꕥ summary: all of the mha boys are (presumably) unfamiliar with black hair, so i thought it'd be fun to headcanon their behavior with a partner who has natural hair!

ꕥ includes: izuku midoriya, shouto todoroki, eijirou kirishima, denki kaminari, katsuki bakugo

ꕥ warnings: slight nsfw for bakugo and kaminari, otherwise just fluff :)

Izuku: 

Is curious about your hair but doesn't wanna ask too many questions for fear of sounding disrespectful, so he conducts his own “research project” by spending hours on YouTube watching natural hair creators and learning how your hair is cared for

He takes notes on the different hair types, determines which kind yours must be, and curates his remaining research based on that

Randomly shows up one day with a bunch of expensive natural hair products that he thinks might work for you since you often complain about how hard your hair is to maintain and how you don’t wanna invest in expensive products that may not work for you

Follows you into the bathroom and convinces you to let him do your wash day for you

It takes some guidance from you (the detangling process is not as easy as they made it look in the videos) but he does great!

You're shocked at how well he managed to define your curls. Your hair damn near looks like you went to a curly salon to get it done!

He even learns how to define his own curls in the process! But you both end up preferring his signature fluffy style instead.

Shoto:

Doesn’t mention anything about your hair for a while, but secretly wonders about it

When you talk to Momo and Mina about your routine during a conversation about hair care, his ears perk up. He listens intently, but still doesn’t say anything

The next time he comes over, your hair is in braids. “Your hair is different,” he observes. “Do you like it?” you question. “Yeah, you look… gorgeous. How did you do that?”

His curiosity gets the best of him, and the next 10 minutes is a flurry of questions he's been holding himself back from asking. “So why'd you put it in braids? What's a protective style? How long can you keep them in? How do you wash it? Why do you have to put oil in it?” He can't help but be in awe at how different your hair is from his own

Since he’s so interested, you offer to give him a few temporary braids, just for fun. After scrolling Pinterest for a while for inspiration, you both agree on giving him some cornrows on the top of his head

He is incredibly tender headed. He winces every time you pick up a new piece of hair to add into the braid, even though you’re braiding rather loosely

After you’re done you show him in the mirror, and he falls in love with it. “It looks so cool,” he beams, his usually deadpan tone taking on a hint of an excited lilt.

“Can you do it again for me tomorrow?” he turns to you to meet your gaze, his eyes wide with admiration. how could you say no to that face?

Denki: 

Loves everything about your natural hair

You always have to swat his hands away because he’s constantly reaching up to play with it, saying it feels so soft like a pillow and it’s not fair for you to keep it all to yourself

When you put your hair in long box braids he’s confused as to how it grew so fast, but he just assumes it’s something that black people can do and doesn’t question it. Maybe it has something to do with that “shrinkage” you’re always complaining about…

When he sees you braiding your hair, he insists that you should do his next. He doesn’t care about how his hair is styled nearly as much as he just likes having his hair played with

Gets hard every time you put on your bonnet

Kirishima: 

Tries to convince you to dye it red so that you two can match

Part of your morning routine with him is you both standing in front of the bathroom mirror, him spiking up his hair with ungodly amounts of gel and you working on whatever curly style you’ve chosen for the day

One lazy Saturday, you guys decide it’d be fun to do each other’s hair

Since the gel is available, you decide to try giving him finger waves. His hair is super thick, and on the longer side, so it’s not easy to get the waves right, but eventually you manage to finesse it into a style that looks close enough to finger waves. He won’t know the difference anyway, you think to yourself

Meanwhile, he sculpts your afro into a star shape. He marvels at how your hair can stick up on its own, without any gel. He wishes his hair would do the same so he wouldn’t have to spend so much money on product

When you reveal each other’s hairstyles in the mirror, you both overflow with giggles, admiring one another’s artistic visions

Of course, he insists, the session is not complete without a backyard photoshoot!

Bakugo: 

Won’t really ask questions but when you’re in the bathroom, styling your hair with the door open, he’s off to the side, observing with bated curiosity (unbeknownst to you)

He’s always careful not to touch or mess up your hair since he knows how much effort you put into it

That’s why he prefers when your hair is in a protective style– because then you let him pull it

He likes to buy you things for your hair– silk scarves, braid jewelry– he even pays attention to when you’re running out of your favorite products and buys refills for you since he knows you always forget

One day he buys you a pair of hair clips with his signature orange & black explosions on them. Gets a good chuckle when he notices that you’ve been wearing them nearly every day, the other hair pieces lying neglected in your cabinet

But why wouldn't you want to rep your man every day?

Fun fact: Izuku and Yoichi have the same eye color.

I mean, it's not weird that some characters have the same eye color (for example, Miс in the anime also has green eyes), but Izuku and Yoichi's eyes are literally the same shade of green!

In fact, the shades of their eyes are slightly different in this picture, but I'm pretty sure it's due to the different drawing style of their eyes and the lighting because these frames are from different anime episodes. You may not even notice the difference in color the first time.

I wonder why they have the same eye color. Studio Bones changed the eye color of some characters in the anime (for example, changing Iida's red eyes to blue), but I doubt that they would arbitrarily make Yoichi's eye color exactly like Izuku's. Did Horikoshi really ask Bones to do this? Did the animators ask Horikoshi what color eyes they should make for Yoichi, and Horikoshi told them to make Yoichi's eyes the same color as Izuku's? Why? What's the point of this?

Perhaps it's just a matter of symbolism, as was the case, for example, with Bakugo and Kudo. Horikoshi made Bakugo look very similar to Kudo to show that Bakugo is the embodiment of Kudo's will in the battle against AFO. So perhaps Yoichi and Izuku's eye color being the same is also to show that Izuku carries Yoichi's will.

However, I can't help but wonder if there was another reason for giving these two characters the same eye color. After all, we all know about the DFO theory, and since AFO's brother has green eyes, that means AFO has green eye color in his genes, which could be passed on to potential children.

Although, I ask you not to take my reasoning too seriously, because it is based on what we saw in the anime, and the anime is not the original source. It's still an interesting detail, though, and I'd like to see it play into the story in one way or another.

-speaking of R+R, his favourite way to relax is Netflix and chill, with his head in your lap and you playing with his hair (never going to stop with his hair I js love it sm)

-will literally throw himself out of the car just to open the door for you. Probably has hurt himself a few times from this

-super insecure about his scars!!! Poor baby. The first time you traced his scars, he cried.

-his hands are so rough! (In a good way obvi) like, they feel like sandpaper most of the time, and he’s really insecure about those too >_< -probably has written so much about your quirk that it takes up a whole notebook! You’re just so much more interesting to him than anyone else. Also has other notebooks filled with the things you like/dislike. Literally anything you told him about yourself is written down somewhere

-his laugh is the most heavenly thing. It’s so sweet and genuine. Same with his smile :)

-this man is so angry all the time, but if you get close enough to him (takes a long time plz be patient) he has such a soft spot for you!!!

-literally the best cook in existence

-being together for dinner with him looks like him teaching you a new recipe, and you guys cooking together. Still yells a lot at you tho (we love him for it)

-brags about you to the bakusquad all the time. “did you see y/n on the battle field!?!? She totally smoked your ass dunceface!”

-swears a lot while talking to you about his day. “And then the fucking lady decided to steal that guys shitty bag! It wasn’t even a nice bag, it looked like it came out of the motherfucking apocalypse!”

-shows his love through actions. Words are hard for him (see the one above)

-makes fun of you all the time

-if he’s about to yell and he knows you’re sensitive, he’ll cover your ears before he yells (this one isn’t my hc, just something I’ve seen a lot)

-he’s a bit of a brat. He just likes seeing you pissed off. Thinks it’s adorable

-very affectionate when you’re alone. Other than that, PDA isn’t very good…maybe he’ll hold your hand or wrap is his arm around your waist so people know to back off, but he gets embarrassed easily.

-shows off around you so much. As soon as you show up to one of his arena fights (different headcanon, might elaborate later) he immediately wins.. you just give him the right motivation with you watching

-he hates when you play with his hair, but he LOVES to touch yours. If it’s long enough, he’ll braid it. Or if it’s not he’ll give you little scalp massages 😮‍💨

-bullies your bullies. He knows you can handle yourself, but you gotta use your scary boyfriend privileges sometime

~Shoto todoroki~

-if you’re too cold or too hot, he’ll use his quirk to help with that.

-also, it’s canon that he’s usually very cold himself, but can’t regulate his fire well enough to be a good temperature so he deals with it. So cuddles are a must to keep him warm

-he’s so insecure about it his scar, he thinks it makes him ugly and unlovable (canon) so he needs constant reassurance

-poor bae gets night terrors

-takes you to all the new restaurants in town. You guys have been every single one at least once

-make homemade (cold) soba for him or else *_*

-not that it matters to him, but Endeavor does not approve of him dating, so be prepared for arguments. You guys will win in the end though

-so sassy. Loves to back talk

-not very talkative, he’d rather listen to you ramble. Literally the opposite of izuku in that way

-takes all your jokes way too seriously. You have to explain everything, but after that he’ll laugh with you about it

He'll cook for you.

No one argues with this; he's literally your personal chef.

He'll always make sure you eat well, whether you're a big eater or not.

This damn guy will literally stuff your stomach and cook for you anytime.

You can wake him up even at 2 a.m., and he won't mind, like:

"Hey, Katsu... I'm feeling kinda hungry... so-"

"Shut up, I already know."

And boom, he'll get up to cook a delicious meal for you and make sure you go to sleep feeling full.

He also loves styling your hair, no matter the type.

Straight, wavy, curly, it doesn't matter.

Just tell him how you want your hair, and he'll do it professionally.

He does most of the chores for you, like cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc.

He absolutely hates seeing you tired or exhausted; he sees himself strong enough to do everything.

"You weren't created for exhaustion, not even your beautiful ass deserves to be tired from sitting."

Another reason he always holds you in his arms when you're alone together.

He always brings snacks for you at school.

At the end of each class, he turns around to give you candy or chocolate to keep you energized.

(He completely refuses to admit he brought them for you, always saying he got them by chance.)

When you're sitting in the dorm with others, he lets you rest your head on his shoulder if you're tired.

He absolutely doesn't let you go downstairs; he always carries you bridal style while going down while you're in his arms.

His excuse is that you're too foolish and will definitely trip and fall and hurt yourself.

(He loves you dearly and worries about you like crazy.)

Did I mention he's your guard dog?

Wherever you are, he walks behind you and gives death glares to anyone who dares to stare at you.

He also makes sure every day that he's the first person to say good morning or goodnight to you, whether in person or through messages.

He's not a big person with words, but he makes sure to say "I love you" enough times because he knows it makes you happy.

Believe me, he's just there for your happiness (I would die for this man).

This guy is literally like a character from books.

He has a top-notch degree in princess treatment.

The reason for that is your talk about a story or a novel.

Or in other words, if he feels it, which means he always carries you on his back.

So you won't tire from something as silly as walking.

He knows that everyone is looking at both of you, but does he care? Of course not.

(I feel like he's read "The Art of Indifference" at least 100 times.)

He's the kind of guy who allows you to wear anything you want.

You might come to him not sure about your clothes, and he simply shrugs in indifference.

"Wear whatever you want; I can fight."

(But not too revealing because you won't get away with it.)

One of his greatest features is that he uses his quirk to either warm you up or cool you down according to the weather.

He always gives you his jacket even without you asking because he knows that his scent calms you down and also ensures that you're warm.

Like the others, he makes sure you eat well and goes crazy if he knows you haven't.

(I think this is an Asian thing...)

This might seem gross, but on the contrary, it's not the case for him, but he allows you to spit out the food you didn't like on his hand.

He tells you to do it in the most poetic expression ever.

He hugs you a lot, first because he loves being close to you and secondly to stick his scent to you, so people can smell you and know that you're his

Tenya didn’t know what was going on with himself. He was never one for being the best with girls. Sure! He was attractive, but he wasn’t particularly charismatic (at least he didn’t think so) so he didn’t understand why you seemed so interested in him.

The poor boy knew you flirted with others, like Kaminari, Uraraka, Izuku was one of your favorites to tease, and even Bakugou, so why was he so affected by you?

He knew you were just teasing, he knew it was just you being friendly and joking around, but each time you made a comment about his body, or his hair or called him by a pet name, his heart raced faster than he did with his quirk.

Iida had never been too interested in dating in the past, seeing as how it brought a lot of stress and anxiety and sometimes a lot of pain, however, there was something about you.

Maybe it was the smell of weed on your clothes when you came in from smoking with Sero and Kaminari, maybe it was the style of clothing you had, maybe it was your nail polish and the rings on your fingers- but Iida was hooked.

To be fair, you were extremely pretty, so it made sense that the boy would crush on you.

Iida walked into the dorm commons, holding a glass. It was getting late, around 9:30 on a warm Friday night. The class was sitting in a circle, while Kaminari balanced a collective 13 phones on his arms, legs, and even a few on his face, all of them charging.

There was laughter and cheers as another phone was placed on the blonde, going on his forehead, before he sneezed, and the phones went flying off of him.

“What are you doing?” Iida asked with a deadpan, crossing his arms and giving an unimpressed look to the class.

Mina looked up and grinned “oh~! Iida! We were just playing truth or dare! You should play with us!” She encouraged with a wide smile.

Iida knew that truth or dare with his class could get pretty wild, so he opened his mouth to protest “yeah! Cmon Iida, it’ll be fun”

His eyes snapped to where you were sitting, and he felt heat rise to his cheeks. You wanted him to play with your class..

..Damn it. How could he say no to that face?

“F-fine..I suppose I could join this game for a bit..” he mumbled reluctantly.

You and the rest of the class whooped in celebration as he sat in the circle with you all. He was regretting his decision the moment Mina smirked. “So! Y/n! I believe it was your turn! So. Truth or dare?”

You smirked, leaning forward and winking at Mina “dare, lay it on me, mommas”

Mina giggled and hummed before gasping and glancing to Iida with a mischievous glint in her eye, that look making a pit grow in his stomach.

“I dare you to kiss Iida!”

You grinned at the dare. For you, it was simple, for Iida, his world was about to collapse. Him? Kissing Tenya Iida? Himself? Yeah he was sure he was going to pass out. “I-I do not know if th-this is a good idea Y- mph!”

You placed your finger over his lips and laughed “relax. ‘M not gonna kiss you if you don’t want me to, but I think it’ll be fun, Iida” you caressed his cheek after pushing up his glasses for him.

Iida flushed brightly, his eyes widening ever so slightly. Why would you give him the decision?

“I-I…I do not mind I-if you kiss me” he managed to stutter out “it is just for a game after all” he let out a breath and adjusted his glasses.

You smiled gently, running your thumb over his cheek. “That’s what I thought.” You smirked “good boy”

He gasped and blushed, but didn’t get to say anything as you pressed your lips to his.

Iida’s eyes fluttered softly before closing. The kiss was amazing, your lips against his felt amazing.

He was dazed as you pulled back, his eyes slowly fluttering back open, and his cheek bright pink. You smiled and tucked his hair behind his ear “I like your chapstick. You should let me wear it more often”

Iida blushed and looked off to the side, trying to stay cool as you sat back in your spot.

He didn’t want to admit it, but he knew for sure now, he was crushing on you, and there was nothing he could do about it.

So I spent the last few weeks going on a My Hero Academia fanfiction reading binge and here's some of my recommendations!

All It Takes is One Good Friend: An anthology fanfic where in each chapter, a different character meets Izuku Midoriya (usually but not always due to an exploding firework truck), becomes friends with him, and helps him deal with Bakugo's bullying in the process, often with hilarious results. Some examples include Iida becoming a delinquent in order to control delinquency at Aldera, Overhaul and the Shie Hassaikai taking over as the school's teachers, Pony challenging Bakugo to a spice off, and Kota punches Bakugo in the nuts so hard it ends up killing Muscular via the butterfly effect. For anyone looking for fun crack, sweet friendships and occasional seriousness, this is the fic for you! (Warning: not for fans of Bakugo).

The Future Briefing Island: Izuku, his friends and his teachers wake up on a mysterious place with a mysterious woman, who has something they're very interested in seeing. A "characters watch their own show MST" style fic differentiated by having an actual plot outside of its premise. Highlights include Izuku getting therapy, Nezu using the mystical realm they're stuck in to troll his students, and the most awkward sex ed lesson ever, starring Midnight.

Cain: After the Sludge Villain incident, Bakugo finds Izuku a bit later then he did in canon, and gets to overhear All Might offering Izuku One for All. He takes it poorly, very poorly, and decides to do everything in his power to prevent "shitty stalker Deku" from becoming All Might's successor. This fic takes pre-character development Bakugo and plays it for horror. It gets legitimately scary at times, especially since we're restricted to Katsuki's POV throughout the fic. A well written story with terrifyingly unhinged unreliable narrator, this is my recommendation for anyone looking for something more intense. (Warning: very not for fans of Bakugo).

Ignited Spark: In a world where Izuku manifested a Quirk, he gives up his dreams of being a hero after a horrible accident until a chance encounter with All Might leads him to become a part of the great Hero team Japan has ever seen. This is an elseworlds/alternate universe fic where everything is different: Ochako is Izuku's childhood friend, Kendo is the next wielder of One for All, Nejire is a part of Class 1-A, Tenko Shimura was rescued from the streets and became a hero, and that just scratches the surface of this story has in store. There are a few AU changes I'm not a big fan of but that could be just me. It's a very long fic and I'm still only about halfway through, but I'm recommending it anyway because of the well written prose and action sequences, intriguing re-imaginings of My Hero's cast, and an excellent dynamic between the three leads. (Warning: gets a bit nsfw later on)

rock'n'roll buckaroo: Kaminari and Shoto create the My Hero Academia version of Buzzfeed Unsolved where they talk about superhero conspiracies. This ends up butterfly effecting into the League of Villains becoming famous YouTubers. Another fic with a good mix of crack and feels.

to convince what joy can bring: A huge cold snap spreads across Japan and poor Tsuyu can barely deal with the temperatures. Fortunately, her friends are there for her. A cute fluffy, Tsuyu centric story.

Rules for 1-A: Aizawa gets sick of dealing with his class of chaos children, so he makes a list of rules for them. What seems like a by the numbers fic is enhanced by the genuinely funny jokes within. Lines like "Todoroki: You're not allowed to set a garbage can on fire and bring it to parent-teacher conferences in place of your father", "I have no desire to explain what a thot is to All Might", and "When someone asks you to pass the salt, please pass the salt, do not produce a hand-written list of every complaint Bakugo has made about Midoriya and begin reading them aloud in a whiny voice," make this fic a laugh riot from start to finish.

Things That Haunt Our Hallways: While on a class trip, the 19 kids of 1-A (Mineta doesn't exist here lol) get hit with Fear Toxin, and it's up to Aizawa to save them. A very angsty fic exploring the fears of the kiddos and lots of Dadzawa and Dad Might as they comfort their students. Recommended for those who love hurt/comfort.

old game (new rules): Jiro is starting a new life in UA and she's determined not to let anyone get close her, not after last time. Another angst fic about dealing with internalized homophobia and trauma from being bullied in middle school. A must read for any fans of Kyoka.

fs in the chat and other forms of emotional support: Ochako learns her friend is a lesbian and decides to set her up with one of her buddies. What follows is pure horny crack as Ochako, Jiro, Mina and Camie fight over Momo and talk about lesbian sex on Discord. Slightly OOC but funny nonetheless.

He's Mine: Ochako activates yandere.exe, Izuku's a little too into it and everyone else is terrified. I actually joked about Ochako being a yandere in my liveblog, so I was amused by this fic. Hope you like it as much as I did.

soulmates die ten years apart: A tragic story about a hero losing her life in the line of duty, and Izuku's grief. I read this when I was having a bad mental health day and it kinda fucked me up. Have some hurt/no comfort.

Colors of You: When Bakugo and Kirishima's relationship gets outed, the kids of Class 1-A come together to let them know they aren't alone. A story about realizing things about yourself and queer solidarity.

It's Called Polyamory: One day, various people from Class 1-A end up seeing Izuku, Kaminari, Momo and Jiro out together in public, and end up in a huge debate about who's in a relationship with who. Little do they know, everyone's right.

Her truest reflection: During the USJ attack, Izuku is hit by a Quirk that makes transforms your body to match your inner self...and gets turned into a girl. As she adjusts to this change, all the girls in 1-A collectively go "OH NO SHE'S HOT!" A sweet emotional story about Izuku learning to love herself, and her six future girlfriends loving her.

his hair's a mess and he doesn't know who he is yet: Kaminari comes into possession of a dress while dealing with some issues, and ends up learning a few things about herself in the process. A good fic about self discovery, friendship, and dunking on Mineta.

Hulk-akure: Toru is shredded as fuck. That's it that's the fic.

it was a grave yet bore no stone: Class 1-A finds out Izuku accidentally leaves his notebook at school while he's visiting his mom, and discover a huge secret about their classmate. Featuring Class 1-A actually getting to react to One for All's existence and be supportive without being interrupted by the plot (cough canon cough)

how to destroy a man and get two dads, a guide by Izuku Midoriya: After learning about Todoroki's backstory, Izuku decides to torment Endeavor by flooding the internet with Omegaverse fanfic of him and All Might. Hilarity ensues.

Fear No Evil: This fic takes the relatively common fanfic concept of All for One being Izuku's father, and takes it in an interesting direction by having Izuku be abducted by Humarise, forcing All for One to team up with All Might and Aizawa to rescue him. The novel and unique premise alone is worth reading, and it contains a lot of fun back and forth between the reluctant allies and well written tension as Izuku tries to survive a cult of genocidal fanatics.

Do you think the reason people misunderstand Midoriya, Bakugou, Uraraka, etc. is because they misunderstand Horikoshi himself?

Like, people say chapter 431 doesn't contribute to the story, but I think that's wrong to an extent, since it does give closure to Ochako's character arc, which is her dealing about her feelings for Izuku (Hori probably got bored of the money to her parents motivation, since it's never brought up again). I think Izuku/Ochako was always Horikoshi's intention since he does mention that he planned her and Izuku to have several scenes, but like many shonen authors, he simply sucks at writing a proper romance or developing a female lead beyond pining for the hero, leading to Ochako becoming less prominent as he couldn't find a better role for her outside of being the token heroine that deals with the token female villain.

(His treatment of other female characters in this manga is also not the best it could be, but that's a talk for another day)

Meanwhile, he became more invested in writing Bakugou, likely due to popularity reasons (Horikoshi is famously scared of cancellation due to prior traumas with Oumagadoki Zoo and Barrage. It's why we had annual popularity polls). As a consequence, the relationship between Izuku and Katsuki became a lot more focused, which contributed to the popularity of the ship. However, I don't think this was ever intentional from Horikoshi's part, since again, he doesn't know how to write a proper romance, let alone a queer one. It's his own take of a Naruto/Sasuke-esque rivalry with lots of emotional tension, which he DOES know how to write due to growing up with Naruto, and it's arguably better written because he actually tries to explore the psyches of everyone involved. But at no point I think he even considered making an actual gay couple, especially since his exploration of rather sensitive topics like LGBT rights and racism are not particularly well-thought, even if well-meaning. Magne and Toga end up evil and dead simply for trying to find liberty in an oppressive society, and Shoji's discrimination plotline is squished in the story at the last minute despite its inherent potential. This all tells me that he's not really this overly progressive, status quo-shattering mangaka that some people believe him to be, he's just a guy writing a superhero story that sometimes deals with social issues, akin to the X-Men.

In the end, I think Horikoshi just decided to end things the way he planned from the start, while not giving much thought to the middle. He did make Ochako's feelings a plot point, so he had to give some closure to that, but alas, he didn't give it the development it deserved beforehand. It was always in the back of his mind as he always sprinkled those "Ochako is crushing again" moments here and there, but never had it as a priority in the story due to the popularity of the main duo + Shouto and his dad, thus chapter 431.

That said, Horikoshi is still an amazing mangaka, but like many others, he is still learning, especially now that he is no longer some obscure creator and has to deal with the usual trappings of fame. He probably never expected MHA to be as huge as it is and it genuinely caught him offguard.

Could be that people do misunderstood Horikoshi's writing. There's many writing styles out there. And really depending on the individual who cross a specific writing style they can either understand it or don't.

I, myself, don't think I'm an expert on any writing style except for my own.

I do think Horikoshi didn't expect MHA to become as popular as it did, especially when his previous works didn't even run that long. (I did enjoy OZ though, that was fun.)

During the years, with that rising popularity it could be that he had to keep building up the plot and I felt like had he had more prepared and probably had more time some of the plot lines could have been handled better.

He just had to experiment along the way while also going by the words of his editors and assistants. (There was also Horikoshi's health issues which hindered some creative development. How relatable.) So there some things he could and couldn't do. I mean part of the ending we got wasn't even the original ending we had in mind, not completely. One element of that OG ending (Movie: Heroes Rising) he did keep that I can think of is Midoriya losing OFA. Which was something that definitely coming.

Also, another factor of that misunderstanding of Horikoshi's writing are cultural and experience differences.

Now with Ochako and her crush, I'll be honest, even though it was "obvious" she's the supposed "love interest", I still don't think Horikoshi intended for her to only be known as that, let alone probably not really one at all.

Horikoshi has written female leads before and they're not written to be a love interest. (Shoutout to Hana Aoi, I adore her. Always doing her best.) Ochako didn't begin the story liking Izuku like that and that crush came later in the story. Heck, going back, a lot of their earlier moments I wouldn't consider "romantic". Just more like "look at these silly kids".

You mentioned Horikoshi stated he wanted to add more scenes for Izuku and Ochako, but what kind of scenes?

I get it as in more scenes in general. When thinking about it because as the story gets to the ending, Izuku doesn't have a lot of scenes with Shoto or Tenya who like Ochako he did become good friends with in the earlier parts of the story.

You know what, to me it seems like the first half of MHA was Izuku building up those bonds with the people in his class and the latter half became him kind of coming to grips on his responsibility as the last/ninth OFA user. First half of those building bonds kind of works because come later those friends do come in clutch for him in the second half.

But anyways!

With the romance, Horikoshi may not actually want to write it, no matter the gender. But probably went to add it in much later because it what draws some parts of the fandom in.

Who really knows, but Horikoshi?

I don't know, he never seem like the kind of mangaka who has cares to throw in a love plot (at least for the leads) in his stories.

I'm not an expert on his writing, I'm still trying to understand it myself. However, I do think his style is misunderstood.

With that recent nejire post you made combined with that ask a while back about “designated girl group” I’m now trying to manifest a fascinating alternate universe where the divisions were completely different among students who go with the big three for this arc. If you had to rearrange the overhaul arc such that no canon 1A-big three internship pairing happened, who would you put at each place?

Hmm...I want to start off by saying that other than the designated girl group, I think the other team ups made sense. Mirio and Nighteye were there to give Izuku an existential crisis. Fatgum is good with characters with generic low self-confidence like Amajiki and Kirishima.

But if I had to switch it up...I would probably send Ochako to Sir Nighteye's Agency. Ochako also has a character arc that involves going beyond the status quo. She seems like the type who would have been inspired by Mirio's drive but thoroughly disappointed by his inability to buck the status quo to save a child in front of them. But it might have been more of a shock to someone like Ochako rather than Izuku because she always fit the norm and was not so accustomed to the unfairness.

I would probably put Asui at Nighteye's Agency as well mostly because she has no filter and it would be fun for someone other than Rocklock to call out Nighteye on his nonsense.

Momo should have gone to Fatgum's Agency. They have quirks with similar functions and Fatgum is good with interns who need to work on their self-esteem. Amajiki and Momo are similar in that they're both brilliant heroes who perform poorly in the sports festival compared to their actual abilities. Izuku probably would have grown the most if he went to Fatgum's Agency as well due to similar self-worth issues.

Iida needed to stay out of the Shie Hassaikai Arc no matter what. Izuku's Shoot Style was too new and Izuku needed to be emotionally unstable in this arc, so Iida had to be shelved.

As for the Ryukyu Agency, it's hard to say because we know almost nothing about her. Nejire might have challenged Kirishima's rather rigid ideas of what makes a hero in an interesting way. I doubt Horikoshi would have ever chosen that route given how Kirishima's character is tied with the concept of masculinity though

Horikoshi I see you out here teasing the Undercut/Sidecut Izuku crowd. I see that hit landing on our boys head from Shig, and I see where them green curls already got cut short.

It's time for some fanservice. I need more practice drawing hair styles especially with Izukus wild hair but I had a doodle dump:

I imagine that the doctors might butcher his hair a bit more to be able to address the gash on his head properly, but he has many a wonderful friend who would definitely help him out by styling that out afterwards. (For fun I imagined Ochako being the one in this doodle)

And of course...1. Izuku would still need to find Kacchan after everything and 2. KACCHAN WOULD NEED TO FIND HIM. and 3. It would be hilarious to see Katsuki react to Izukus hair(and he's honestly more worried by the scar)

Can't stop thinking about a CiderDeku focused AU in which our favorite seltzer boy and Midoriya work as part time vigilantes together.

And since Izuku has a fire bending quirk in this AU, the contrast of his quirk and Cider's (who is named Mizunami Himura in this story) make people start calling them "Steam-Bow couple" as their unofficial vigilantes name.

Still thinking about the details of how they started their crusade together as vigilantes, but I like that idea I mention in other post about Mizunami saving Izuku from Bakugou when both of them still were in Aldera and Midoriya was around 13. Mizunami still was the leader of the Cider House gang (and maybe two years older than Midoriya) but later he left the group because he felt his members started to be way too problematic and getting in worse situations with civilians and heroes, something he didn't like because while Mizunami commited crimes like robbery he never tried to harm innocent people during his operations.

Besides he started feeling for Izuku after protect him from Bakugou, and since Izu wanted to stay with him after the incident they both start to get along and quickly became good friends, Mizu also helping Izu no being so shy and insecure about himself due the years of bullying.

He start helping Izuku to train his quirk and body during his free time, which served a lot for Midoriya to get in good shape and develop a fight style for the years to come as he still intented to apply to at least a low-middle tier hero school (and this will became important later).

I like to think the incident with the Sludge monster from chapter 1 was what caused a twist on their relationship, as unlike what happens in canon here when both of them are attacked by the Slime that escaped from A.M, Izuku and Mizunami give the monster a big surprise because they were able to fight back.

Slime turned to be quite vulnerable to water and fire combined, which allowed Izu and Mizu to restrain him in a bottle of soda and left him for the heroes finish the job later, as they run totally excited by the experience.

After escape and being safe, Izuku suddenly jump to the arms of Mizunami and they started kissing out of the excitement of the moment. When they calm down both smiled and since that moment they became officially boyfriends, and decide they would have more moments like this in the future so they will start fight criminals together.

Also the incident also give Izuku the final confidence boost he always needed and when Bakugou provoked him after school trying to make fun of Mizunami who was there for walk along Izuku to his home, Midoriya decided he had enough when Katsuki insulted his boyfriend.

So what happened next is that Izuku deep breath and expelled a big green fire ball from his mouth, which resulted in Bakugou getting a lot of first degree burns and loosing his eyebrows (something for what he would be mocked a lot later).

Mizunami used his water quirk to extinguish the fire over Bakugo's clothes who is totally terrified, then Mizu and Izuku laugh at him take a picture with their funs for future reference and run away together.

CinderIzu is great and Cinder as a character was ignored, slept on ...bc villain stans are predictable into hot villains like dabi and shig(yes, shig is hot even in his possum way) and ...damn this fandom waste a good opportunity for a ship.

I do like the idea Izumi being considered so beautiful even with her scars (she is prettier bc of her scars bc this woman survived) so in a country where the woman's value depends on her beauty...Izumi carrying her scars and being hot is amazing. Cinder would be into!

Assuming One For All enhances the current user's Quirk, how do you think Mirio and Permeation might have evolved if All Might had chosen him to be his successor?

In spite of the boost in power, I doubt much would change about his fighting style. It would just make him more effective at it, turning himself into a meteorite against whatever he was fighting. What would make it more dangerous is him using his intangibility in a straight-up fight. Imagine fighting someone as strong as Izuku, but he can turn intangible whenever he wants. Now that would be a nightmare. Like with Izuku, "Fa Jin" and "Gearshift" would add much outside of a power boost. Though potentially, he could charge up "Fa Jin" while he is intangible, but who knows if that's how the two would interact? "Smokescreen" would either help or hinder him. It would let him slip in and out of wherever he wants without his enemies realizing it, but may just end up keeping Mirio from knowing where he's going. "Float" could be interesting as he could fly and redirect himself whenever he wants, giving him plenty of more opportunities to move around. "Black Whip" could be used in a similar way, but a more fun option would be Mirio using them as his arms when intangible via his selective intangibility. Out of all of them, I think that "Danger Sense" would help him the most. Like I talked about before, it could help him know where he is going and know when to use his power, making "Permeation" much less of a hassle.
