I'm not bilingual, in spite my best efforts, but I do have a love for language and how it is used, so I have a little to say here.

For a character learning a language:

(In learning language) "I'm a character and I speak like a person. This is called... uh..."[Character] stops, their brow furrowed as their face scrunches up as if they were taking a particularly difficult poop while they snap furiously with their [dominant] hand. "Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck... uuuuhhhh..."

(In Native Language) "Fuck it! It's *dialogue!*"

I love writing language barrier frustrations. Communication is such a vast and rich thing with huge areas of study, and I particularly love the areas of transition between those cultural regions.

Character can't figure out how to communicate an advanced concept, so they break it down by shoving two more simple terms together- such as "fizzyboom" instead of "bomb," or "longstop" for "home." Coincidentally, this may end up with some legitimate and sometimes very incorrect vocabulary in some languages.

If a character is struggling to understand a dialect of a language they know, it's fun to have idiom nonsense like above- especially if you have one relevant idiom with different meanings or connotations. "Break a leg" is a good example.

I personally don't write many bilingual characters who have issues with language, though I did have a Finnish character who spent his adult life in like Kosovo and Chechnya doing journalism on what it is to live in these places, especially as a queer person. Nikki (nickname for Nikolai, nicknames are apparently big in Russia) was fluent in English, but he has a special connection to the word "товарищ" (tovarich)- a word for "friend" or "comrade" that has a unique and niche connotation/value to that character.

So I suppose my addition to the largely fluent bilingual characters is to choose a few favorite words from their native language that they use instead of other (say, English) terms.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.

Part of the reason that Republicans are so desperately acting like they will never lose again is because they are deeply terrified that this is their last real chance to win. The big orange dipshit came in and gutted the party of everyone who wasn't a loyalist, which left it full of nasty little gremlins who have gaping voids where charisma and human decency is supposed to go.

They still hold a lot of power, but if we stop them this year the next presidential election may not be the Most Important One Of Your Life™, that's not a guarantee or anything, but if they don't win here and now their future looks grim, this dipshit is the only guy they have left and he's extremely diminished and has his brains leaking out of his ears at this point. We can beat him into the ground.

So that's what we're gonna fucking do. We're gonna break these fucking fash. They will crash upon us and we're gonna break their fucking necks. When they come for us they will lose because they're fucking losers and we have each other's backs which is something they fundamentally are incapable of comprehending.
