i was thinking about the "show!thom assumed in s1 that mat and rand are dating and baffles mat by making reference to this in tanchico in s3" premise and have come up with an even better premise: thom assumed in s1 that mat and rand are dating, but does NOT ever make reference to this in mat's hearing in s3, but DOES make reference to it in elayne's hearing.

and so we have:

elayne, pining, because she has a crush on both rand and mat but thinks they're dating each other because thom told her so and mat has never refuted it (because he has no idea thom and elayne think this because they've never talked about it in front of him), and so much the better because they'd both hate prince consort life and she might have to marry for politics anyway and even if she could marry one of them she would always have to put her duties over their marriage, and they both deserve better than her i.e. each other

mat, pining, because he has a crush on both rand and elayne but thinks they're dating each other because they spent so much time closeted up together in falme to "discuss politics" which mat is convinced is a euphemism for sex, and so much the better because they're both so beautiful and good and smart and powerful and mat is a good-for-nothing cringefail loserboy who abandons his friends and stabs them with cursed daggers, and they both deserve better than him i.e. each other

rand, pining, because he has a crush on both mat and elayne but he's on the other side of the world and thinks they'll fall in love with each other while they're on a roadtrip together (because who wouldn't fall in love with either of them?), and so much the better since he could only ever bring danger and pain into their lives, and they both deserve better than him i.e. each other

now, whether thom genuinely does think rand and mat are dating and it genuinely is an accident that he only ever mentions this in elayne's hearing and never in mat's, or whether he knows exactly what he's doing and is causing problems on purpose..........well, who will ever know?
