my most underrated Kataang take is, I think, the inclusion of Katara's epiphany in The Fortune Teller at all. We've talked ourselves hoarse about how it's the clear turning point in how she consciously thinks of Aang (I will always mandate that she was just unknowingly down bad since the pilot because Look at her behaviour dear god) and how it's important that she has this epiphany even after knowing Aunt Wu's predictions 'aren't real' or necessarily set in stone.

What I want to talk about is why I think it's important that THIS is the moment she sees Aang in a new light amid his previous attempts to have her think of him 'differently' than she did at the beginning of the episode.

When Aang is being sweet to her (making her a woven accidental-betrothal necklace that she happily accepts), Katara is appreciative and responsive, but still says "he's just a good friend, a sweet little guy, just like Momo".

When Aang tries to flirt with her under Sokka's aloof guise, it falls flat. When he tries to get her attention in general (and when having parallels with Meng), it likewise doesn't work.

Finally, he tries the flower but it falls into the lava (symoblism, anyone?) and they have bigger things to deal with, like making sure the town isn't completely wiped out by the volcano. It's also worth noting that after Aang's conversation with Meng:

He never actively tries pursuing or wooing Katara in the same way. He's still kind towards and supportive toward her, of course. He, at some point (probably after the 2nd cheek or third cheek kiss) eventually starts to think (understandably) that Katara has feelings for him. But as of The Fortune Teller, he's stopped trying to have her see him in a new light or do a big romantic gesture.

And that's exactly when she does, consciously, fall for him.

Not when he's trying to woo her in failed, false personas, not when he's being his sweet romantic self, but when he's being the most himself all episode: Aang, "the bravest person [she] knows, who's done nothing but help people and save lives" since she met him (1x12).

He's not paying attention, he's not trying to impress her. He's just being a good, determined Avatar. A good, helpful person. A powerful bender, completely in control of himself and his element. Being himself.

This edit here has opened my eyes bc I wasn't paying attention to Debling at ALL during this scene. There was an acknowledgement that they both wanted Pen, Debling here thought he was the winner. Debling was the first to interrupt rudely in the middle of a conversation, breaking an important moment, Colin was just more scansalous about it when it came his turn, interrumpting them mid-dancing

The way he looks at Colin both times, I thought he was just polite the first time but nah, he was smug, Colin sweety I'm so sorry I gaslighted you, you kinda had other valid reason to dislike him😭

Make them kiss and make Jon look down at Elias with bitterness and sadness at the same time knowing if things were different he may have never killed him. If Elias were better or if he were worse, maybe things would be different. But as it is its unfinished and unsatisfying and all there is is the knowledge that Elias is a horrible man and so is he, and the people that they are right now could've never ended any other way. Elias made him into this, and the man he is now would've never chosen anything differently. He kills Elias. He wanted to, and he isn't sorry. There is no other way it was ever going to go.

But he's gone. And Jon is here. And for the first time, there is no knowledge Elias is right around the corner with all the answers if he could just pry them out of him. There is no lingering in his office hoping for guidance, for someone to fix all of it, for some sort of understanding. There is no way to cling to the naive idea that Elias could just fix everything, whether he liked him or not. There is no more respect left for him. There is no more thing that is almost something, that could be something, if one of them would dare to move from where they were for a second. There is nothing left. Jon killed Jonah Magnus. But Jonah changed him in more ways than he could count. He will never be rid of him. No matter how much he hates him, he can never undo what Jonah did to him.

He is not guilty over killing Jonah, or what he planned to do. He still thinks it would've been the right thing. Jonah is dead, and Jon thinks he's on his way to join him, some mornings.

All that's left is "what could've been, if something, ANYTHING, was different." And that's not an answer at all.

I just realized it but doesn’t the Heichi character name is kinda a HeiShin ship name? His name is 平一 where 平 is the first character of Heiji’s name and 一 is the second character of Shinichi’s name. It’s probably just a pun replacing the 次 (second place) with 一 (first place) similar to Kogoro’s character name change but it’s really funny to imagine Momiji accidentally name a character after HeiShin ship name.
