Homeland Abandoned

“My cat could track your brother–had she not spent her strength attacking the earth elemental.” Masoj Hunnett hoped his sweating brow and shaky tone would be seen as fatigue and not as signs of deception. “She took too much damage and cannot be summoned until she recovers.” 

Dinin cursed. “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure,” Masoj lied. Relief flooded him when Dinin accepted the answer, turning to the cleric instead for a solution. It was a token effort, Masoj knew–the Do’urden elderboy would benefit from his brother’s disappearance. None among the patrol would waste time chasing the gnomes through the tunnels. None would bother rescuing their captive.

Masoj hadn’t managed to kill Drizzt Do’urden…but the brat was as good as dead anyway. He hid a smile. Luck favored him today after all.

Canon divergence: Drizzt doesn't get rescued after Belwar captures him. The gnomes take him to their home, where he discovers that everything he's been taught about them is a lie. And Zaknefein discovers that his son isn't as "lost" as he'd thought.
